Automatic Activesync over Bluetooth - Touch HD General

Hi guys, took delivery of my HTC Touch HD just before Xmas, what a nice piece of kit
One "issue" I have with it is the synchronisation of Outlook contacts/calenders etc via Activesync. How can I set up Activesync so that it automatically synchs, over Bluetooth, whenever the HD is within Bluetooth range of my laptop? On my old Nokia N95, that would automatically synchronise every 15 minutes whenever the phone was within range of my laptop. With the HD, I have to manually select on the HD to connect via Bluetooth, which works, but it's a manual process!
Any help gratefully received
Thanks
Gav

I had a solution a long time ago with mortscript.
But it was not very clean...
I'am also looking for a solution to sync my contacts every day by bluetooth...

me too, even nokia can get this right, its not exactly a nice feature, its a necessity

It's not (easily) possible to do what you are requesting because there's a fundamental difference between the ways ActiveSync and Nokia PC Suite work.
In Nokia's case, the connection is initiated by PC. In WM's case, it's vice versa. This means that if you set your phone up to scan the environment for a bluetooth host computer all the time, it will drain your battery very soon, so it's not practical.
A workaround I can think of would be a program on your WM device and on your PC. Your PC would search for your phone periodically, then if it's found it would send a specially crafted file/message which would trigger an ActiveSync connection on the device.
Alas, such a program doesn't exist, and I'm not even sure it's possible. The problem here is that you want it to work even when your phone is suspended, and no BT files will be accepted in this state. If you have to wake it up to sync, it becomes not much easier than launching sync via a shortcut.

The phone being suspended isn't necessarily a big barrier, it wakes up when I put it on charge anyway so that would be when I would want it to auto-sync.
Sorry to bump an old thread, but was wondering if anyone has made anything alike in the last 3 months?
It's little things like this that make me favour Nokia just a little bit more.

This is possibly the only thing that annoys me about my HD. Ny N95 was flawless in its auto-synch via bluetooth, but alas my HD is severely deficient in this matter. I can't even get mine to synch at all via bluetooth, never mind automatically!

Yes, it does seem to have many flaws. I have to try and connect via bluetooth about 10 times for it to actually succeed, most of the time it doesn't detect the PC at all and then when it does, it fails half way connecting?!
Little piece of software upgrade would be so much better..

How about a shortcut? How can i map a file to start the connect action for Bluetooth sync?

Hey, i'm interested in the same thing.
look @ thread -> 289197
can be useful? can anyone have updates? thanks
Michele

Up for this. I am also looking for this kind application. My Nokia X6 does this flawlessly but not on my Android phone. Currently, I am looking for an application that can sync my contacts and calendar from my XP laptop via bluetooth Android phone... It's not available yet on the android Market. Please help thanks...

Any Mac users with experience of PocketMac to sync XDA2/Mac?

Has anyone used an XDA2 with Mac OS X.3 (Panther)?
I use a Powerbook laptop and want to sync with my XDA2 without troubling the PC that I bought for the kids (with some chagrin, it must be said!)
There is a program called PocketMac that has received some good reviews - which will, apparently, allow the XDA2 (any Pocket PC) to sync with Mac (iCal, Address Book etc.), which, in turn, sync with my iDisk. Serious back up here (laptop stolen three years ago.
Anyway, my XDA2 arrives tomorrow and I wanted to know if there are any Mac Users who have some experience and, hopefully, some tips for me.
I bought an XDA2 by the way, because they look good and the functionality is clearly better than previous Palm/Symbian devices. The great reviews I have seen posted on various internet sites seem to suggest I made the right choice.
Thanks in anticipation of assistance from users' experience.
pocketmac 3.3 works perfectly - xda2 (i was using myssingsync before but it was not working fine as pocketmac is doing now)
if you need help your welcome
ciao

PocketMac 3.3 works fine for me too (PowerBook G4 w/Panther). You can't install Pocket PC software via Mac -- you'll have to "rent" a Windows PC for that, unless you have the CAB files. Some say that Virtual PC would take you around this problem, I'm still working on it... Will let you know.
Also wanted to try MissingSync - the one Apple suggests - but no luck there!
Happy MacKing, and let me/us know your experience!
New experience of Mac and XDA2
I am impressed - syncs faultlessly.
Installed the Mac look provided by Pocketmac as part of the PM 3.3 software bundle.
However, does anyone know how to edit the skins in the XDA as installing an Apple logo appeals?
Apple Skins
sorry - found it in the Pocketmac bundle - it just needed turning on in the XDA2.
guys, where to find trial version of PockeMac or Missing Sync?
I am new in MAC world and seems no trial versions here
How i would know which one is working for me???
Please help!!!

dont fear google it's your friend
Thank you Rudegar,
I actually using google very much... but kind of "slowed" about it type demo in it
PocketMac vs. Missing sync
Both programs have their quirks, but since I have a combination of chinese/english names in my address book, missing sync it is. I tried pocket mac and it hoses up unicode quite badly.
PocketMac XDA2 powerbook
I don't believe you. It doesn't work AT ALL. garbled text all over iCal, phone numbers in crap order, no iCal events getting to XDA. No Bluetooth sync...Thanks for your recommendation but PocketMac sucks. I really want to know how to make this work
I just threw away the copy of Pocketmac I had bought and went and got Missing Sync. MUCH better. Been using it over a year now. (as you can see from the post dates)
PBG4+PocketMac+MDAII=0
I cannot even get pocketmacpro demo to "see" my MDA even though its paired as a BT device with my PBG4.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks

I'm talking with PocketMac support.
I want to buy Pocketmac Pro 3, but I cannot pay by credit card from
Poland. What should I do?
I used the Mark/Space Missing Sync for Pocket PC application
for synchronising. I bought it via Internet and I am very happy with it.
Simple and clear
I have big problem with internet :?
I often use PowerBook out of work in places where I do not have
access to Internet.
Before I had the Nokia 6310i mobile phone and via this telephone
I could connect to Internet (wireless connection
in every place within GSM network range). Gprs Nokia modem operated
without any problems, and I could connect with the computer
via bluetooth without any problem. I activatedon the phone I could
establish connection.
Unfortunately, Qtek 2020 is a more complex appliance, but has no
such option. In Pocket PC I have Internet (GPRS connect), but not
in the computer
I asked how to solve this problem on numerous forums: Apple and
xda-developers-Forum. Nobody could give me a satisfactory answer.

Bluetooth filesharing problems

Hey!
I just recently tried to share photo's with my girlfriend's Sony Ericsson T610. I can set up the bond ok, I can send pictures from her phone to my XDAII, but I cant send pictures (or contacts) from mine to hers.
I go to "beam file" select her device, & tap to send........ then it states "sending file 1/1" but that's it, you can see that a transfer is beinng attempted on her phone's display, but the prompt to accept or reject the file never appears. It takes something like 10mins for the XDA to report the failure, and you cannot seem to cancel the transfer - the word cancelling comes up, but then the screen freezes (you can still get to other applications throught the start bar)
Has anyone lese had this problem - will it be fixed by the bluetooth update, or the o2 update..... or anything?
cheers.
I have had exactly the same problem, same situation with a T610, 3 months ago on original ROM.
Haven't tried it after the ROM upgrade though. I'm anxious to know too.
whoops..me too..
it freeezes when i try to send files over BT to other phones!
Hmm..And I can't install BT Tools because it disable ActiveSync via Bluetooth..hmm..
Will try other thirdy part software..
Might have a POTENTIALLY useful piece of info for you here folks...
You see, I'm originally an Orange E200 SPV Smartphone user.
Sad as it might sound, there is NO inbuilt functionality in the phone (Windows Mobile 2003 based) for sending files by BT.
So some clever people who write a third party software File Manager app - Smart Explorer I think it is, decided to include there own support for Bluetooth sending of files in the program.
BUT - this is where things may start getting interesting...
What they found was that with the first beta, phones just like the SE T610 for example, could not receive files.
Testing by them, found that this was because certain types of phones could not receive files via BT, when sent at full transmit protocol speed, and no facility existed for them to simply 'drop down' to lowest common speed.
How they got around this, was by including an option, in the next version of their program, to include a little tick box, to "Send at full speed".
Thus, by default, lower speed is used, so as to ensure full compatibility.
But if you KNOW the device you were sending to supports full speed, you can just check the "Full speed" box as it is sending, at it switches to faster speed.
Relating all that babble and background info to the XDA2 etc, it isn't too far a leap of knowledge, to wonder if the same problem applies, whereby the XDA2 defaults to sending files by BT at FULL transmit protocol speeds, and of course, certain phones, such as the T610, can't receive at this speed, and simply sit there confused.
A guess, nothing more. But based on my experiences of the E200 smartphone, and what the problem was then, I can't help but suspect that the problem of certain phones not being able to negotiate full speed BT transfer, is what might be the issue here too.
Just a thought...
..And so..For transfer Files via BT we Must wait for WM2k3 SE?
..Ehm,Maybe u will find it useful:
I tryed transfer files to Nokia 3650,6600 (Symbian 60 and 70 phones) and sometimes the phones receive the files (but my XDA2 freezes and contiunue show me Sending...) and sometimes freezes at all and don't send nothing.
Regards
So, it means that if sending files from/to another bluetooth pocket pc, then it shouldnt has problem?
I'm the main developer of Smart Explorer for Smartphone 2002/2003. You're right Shadamehr. It seems that the Microsoft BT stack on SP 2002/2003 does not handle correctly the max packet size the remote device accepts. This happens with different devices, such as T68i or T610. I can't confirm yet that this problem also occures with XDA II (I don't have any T610 at the office).
We are actually porting Smart Explorer to Pocket PC (it was only an internal exercise and not planned to be made public). Actually, 95% of the job has been realized. I will try to find a T610 and test file transfer. I'll let you know the result. If there is some interest, we may think about putting this version on our web site.
from what i understand then many mobil phone makers block that
because background pictures and such are being sold
and if people could just share them they would not make as much money
my gf's nokia have a mmc card and i cant even put pictures on the it and choose them as background
if your xda2 can beam to other xda2's and to a pc then putting 2003SE on it is not likely to solve issues with other devices not being able to recieve from it
nice one jacoch - let me know when i can give it a whirl!!!
If its possible to send picuures from a T610 to another T610 and from a T610 to an XDA, it must be possible for a t610 to recieve pictures etc.
my XDA gone back for repairs but should be back with me soon 8)
cheers guys
Well I just tried with the T610 of a friend of mine. It seems that BT stack is even worst on XDA than it is on SPV. I have faced some hangs while shutting down the BT stack. The same appears when trying to send a file when the remote device ask to be bound first. The bounding dialog never appears and SE sit waiting from the answer of the OS. I'm not sure it's bugs as I tried on our development device that is not really fit :? (ROM 1.66)
Anyway, once the XDA II has been bound to the T610, transfer was fine (at slow speed only). I have sent successfully several 40Kb jpeg files. If we decide to make this version public, we will investigate and try to fix these troubles.
Pleeeeeease let me know if/when I can test it;
Is there any way that the Bluetooth application can be split from the bulk of the OS - to use as a patch for windows PPC? (as if you didn't have enough to do!)
 cheers!
not only the T610
Yea, have tried even with the high end SE P900, still wont accept the transfer... but the PALM units were able to send from an to 7650 and other high end units...
It really sucks to thinks XDA2 is "HIGH END/TECH PHONE" but doesnt connect /file trans thru BT.
ok is bt but is maybe a pb with ir setting read this

BT file transfer to mobile phones
I have I-mate running WM2003. As described above I can recieve files from SE T610/630/Z600 but i can't send files to these devices... it writes "Sending 1/1" and that's it... although on T610 the BT sign changes to the one indicating a transfer... nothing happens in fact... for half an hour it couldn't send a 20Kb picture... I have downloaded and installed Pocket Bluetooth Tools... but what I can't figure out is what is this software at all and how it works? If anyone knows how to make my I-mate (1.66.00WWE) send files to mobile phones, please explain it to me step-by-step.... THANK YOU!!!!
so can anyone tell me a program i can use for sending files over BT. i got HS messenger for texting over BT networks but it requires both devices to be bonded. is this true for all aps? im only looking to send files from my xda2 to another xda2 if it makes it any easier
Bluetooth problems
I have exactly the same problem as Rasputin. My gf has a t610 that I cant send images to.
Is there any development on that program that will allow users to send images to these phones?

XDA2 Bluetooth synching with Toshiba 5100 laptop

God, I'm supposed to be good at this, but I've tried all 4 billion permutations on offer and give up - HELP!
Back when I still had hair a few days ago I thought getting the two units to talk to eachother would be fiddly but possible - now I'm not so sure...
First question:
if I delete the partnership and start afresh by trying to sync using BT the XDA re-establishes a partnership OK, and then pops up a dialog asking "BT serial Port COM5, this BT device supports serial port profile, would you like to create a BT serial port for it". The Toshiba BT Service Centre on the laptop now claims ports 4-7 are available (and also says that of these 5 is actually connencted), so I hit OK. AFAIK at this point the paired unts are able to communicate over port 5, but I can't beam files or sync and on checking again on the PC COM5 is now not connected, What is going on?
Second Question:
Has anybody managed to get a real working BT connection between a Tosh 5100 and an XDA2 - maybe it's the bloody Toshiba software?
Third Question:
Where does Mr. Bluetooth live and does anybody fancy going over to his place with me and firebombing it.
Cheers, I feel better getting that off my chest. And it's my birthday goddamit so I entitled to a good rant.

Magneto and I: The first week

The following should give users an idea what they are in for if they decide to take the plunge...
It happened again. Out of the blue, my XDAII froze, then turned itself off. I closed my eyes and there it was, this terrible electric 'bling bling' sound. I didn't have to open my eyes to confirm that another hardreset had just happened on my XDAII. No particular reason. As if my XDA wanted to tease me, it had just decided to clear everything in its memory, all installed programs. And now? installing everything again? when there was no insurance that it wouldn't hardreset itself again?
No, I said to myself, not this time. I opened the file explorer on my PC and did what I thought I would never do: I started the upgrade to install Magneto or better known as Windows Mobile 2005 on my XDAII.
When I downloaded the Magneto files, I thought to myself that I would just keep them for storing. You never know. One hardreset later and suddenly Magneto sounded like a godsent to me.
The upgrade went smooth, very smooth in fact. Before the upgrade I deleted the extended rom files and storage files. Maybe that helped.
All OK? Not quite. I could not connect to my PC and activesync via USB. Everything worked well via Bluetooth, but USB? No chance. I found out that it had something to do with XP and not having the servicepack 2 installed. Well, no choice. Goodbye USB sync. I could live with that since I still had bluetooth.
Once I had Magneto running, I started installing my standard programs. Most of them worked. The only one that did not was WorldMatePro. OK, I tried to live without it.
I installed most of the programs into Storage. They all worked. I even tried to install some of them into Buzz' RAM disk. A few worked as well, some couldn't be installed there. Well, I anyway planned to use the RAm disk for storage.
I was actually surprised that XCPU_Scalar worked. Well, even Magneto is now overclocked to 530 MHZ on my XDAII.
I also installed PocketZenPhone and Pocketbreeze. Somewhere I had read that these programs would not run on Magneto. But no issues on my machine! They both worked. The only issue I have with Pocketbreeze is that the category icons & colors are gone. Pocketweather also worked fine. Again, I was surprised that Magneto was so compatible.
Unfortunately, PocketContacts was a dead-end. "No contacts found" was the only message I ever got from it. Goodbye PocketContacts.
I had a few more programs in my folder on the PC, but the memory on my XDAII with Magneto is limited. Very limited. Very very limited in fact. But for me not such a big issue as I do not have too much necessary software on my XDA. I could live with this limitation for time being.
Anyway, I wanted to try Magneto for a week and see if I stayed with my new friend.
After I made the first few phone calls with Magneto I was impressed with the dialer. Nice interface. Also, it seems to me that the phone connects much quicker to the provider than before.
But why didn't they include something like the intellidialer? Well, the new contacts application is quite nice, so I will use the contacts instead. Not too bad.
Then, on day three, the disaster. Suddenly, the screen stopped reacting. Well, it actually didn't stop, it just didn't react to the places where I touched it with the pen.
I was already thinking about "hardreset", when it came to me that the screen orientation was wrong.
I had installed Vitobuttonmapper and mapped <rotate screen> to the record button as press and <start bluetooth> as press & hold. I figured out that I must have pressed the record button not long enough, therefore the <rotate screen> command was executed. But somehow, the screen orientation remained in Portrait but the touch screen was now in landscape.
I managed to fix this problem by changing back to Portrait and making a softreset. Then I tried to repeat this error. Yepp, the <rotate screen> was the culprit.
Consequently, my Magneto has no screen rotation anymore. But I can also live with this.
The rest of the week went fine. Magneto is stable and smooth.
Now the final question: Will I stay with Magneto? Yes, I will. I am often travelling and therefore I need a device that I can rely on. If I'm on the road and my XDA hardresets, I'm dead. Therefore Magneto is the solution for me. No hardresets, and even if the battery goes dead, I'm safe.
But one thing is clear to me. When the first Magneto devices come out, and hopefully there will be the Magician with Magneto, I will immediately retire my XDAII and buy one of these devices. Magneto is the future. No doubt about it.
What do I like the most about it besides the "goodbye hardresets"? for sure the softbuttons. Just great!
I hope this was useful.
Cheers
Pat
Hmmm.... Interesting.... Very, very interesting!!!!
I think I'll try Magneto real soon... However, I have a question: Is it possible to return to 2.06.00WWE just in case?
Thanks for such detailed story!

I have the same problem. But let me just say that I have 2 harddrives on my PC. Both with Win XP + SP2. I tried to synch Magneto on the harddrive I frequently use but it DOESN'T work... So I tried booting my 2nd harddrive. This 2nd harddrive has a fresh installation of Win XP + SP2 and other essential utilities like Office suite, WinZIP, etc.
And guess what...activesync 4.0 using USB WORKED using my 2nd harddrive. Very ODD...

YES it is possible to return to 2.06.00WWE...I have done exactly that.
I have been running Magneto for about 1.5 weeks. And I must say it's GREAT! But as you know it's just a leaked version so it has a LOT of bugs. So I've decided to go back to 2.06.00WWE until Magneto is more stable/reliable.
How to configure Connect via bluetooth ?
I done the WM2005 installation and i manage to connect via USB with everthing sync. But i like to know how you can setup the activesyc via bluetooth ? I own a Level One bluetooth dongle and i did try to connect via bluetooth in WM2003 before i upgrade to SE. Now in Wm 2005, i still have no luck to get it work. Help !!!
I m using Windows 2003 and had configure Comm 5 in ActiveSync 4.0, added bluetooth serial port 5 in widcomm drivers. And also i pair my XDA2 with my machine several time to make sure it is paired. I try everthing include try to do file transfer from my deskop also no luck.
Btw, i can't discover any ActiveSync service in "My Bluetooth Places", i can only see "Dial up networking, Push Object". I do c actvesync in WM 2003.
Everytime i choose "Connect Via Bluetooth", will get this message "Cannot find an existing Bluetooth partnership with a PC that supports ActiveSync. Would you like to set up a patnership now ?" Yes/No button. But i had done the pairing before that ?
please help.
Change "Secure Connection" to "Not Required"?
Works for me, without Magneto (yet)

With 2003SE I didn't have any problems. Madkat's proposal didn't work.
Update to WM5
You are lucky, I was tryed whole last night but fail, it always give me the message "Error 101 - Connection error". USB connection is very good, I could do everything with cable

Re: How to configure Connect via bluetooth ?
Thanks everyone for the solution. I had to revert back to 2003SE by Xdajojo version, because 2005 did not connect with usb or bluetooth adapter. activesync 4.0 does not seem to work properly on my device (O2 XDA2). I changed back to activesync 3.8 and worked properly with 2003SE. I can even go on internet using activesync. Also I have TOMTOM 3.0 Bluetooth version wich did not install on 2005. I will wait until proper stabilised version of 2005 is released by xda-developers team.

Installing applications over BT not possible with Universal?

Hi fellas,
Was wondering if you guys are able to install applications on your Universal via AS (activesync) over BT.
I have a Billionton BT Dongle and was able to install applications earlier on my PDA2k but for some odd reason, am unable to do so on the Universal (i have a Jasjar). The installation process begins on my desktop but halfway through i get a message saying that it cannot connect to the device and i should reconnect the device and begin installation again. This happens inspite of the fact that AS is running fine and i am even able to sync without reconnecting as it asks me to.
What do you guys suppose the problem is?
Cheers.
Get the latest active sinc. (microsoft just came out with one a week ago) then turn off all your firewalls. It should work no problem
I don't mean to hi-jack your thread, but I too have a similar question about BT.
Is it possible to transfer files like MP3 music without active sync using BT?
Yes you can transfer files from PDA to PDA (mp3's, pictures, contacts, notes, ect..) I do that a lot between my fiance's treo and my Jasjar
Hi
I have no problem with install or transfer file from my desktop to my Xda Exec.
The Activesync that I use is version 4.1 the very latest and to transfer files I use the Window Explorer.
Regards
Gigino
