Build Quality - Touch 3G General

Hey there,
i've had my jade for about a week and i've come across three issues concerning the casing.
Issue #1: On the bottom of the Touchscreen, under the htc logo, just above the d-pad, there is a small bump which can be seen when looking at the screen's reflections.
Issue #2: The battery cover doesnt fit perfectly, on the left side it's perfectly flush but in the right side it sticks out a very small bit, but you can feel it when holding it in your hand, maybe because of that
Issue #3: When applying gentle pressure on that left side of the battery cover, it creaks. It really doesnt take much, it usually happens when writing sth with both thumbs and it is really annoying and gives the phone a low-quality impression.
I just wanted to ask if someone has come across the same or similar issues here, so i can find out if i got that one in a thousand and get a better one when returning mine...

#1: Not here
#2: Yes, only a very small bit. Doesn't bother me that much.
#3: I never noticed this until I tried it after your post. Doesn't bother me because it never happens when I use it.
I guess it could be worse.
Can someone please reply to my thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=463365 regarding the sound click issue ?

thanks for the answer, i just ordered myself a new one for comparing...

1/ Yes very slightly.
2/ Yes.
3/ No.

gap:
I found this youtube video, where in the screens reflections there is also a bump visible...

Regarding the pics:
I don't have that bump.
The gap is on the other side of my phone... and it's not as bad on my phone.

it looks worse on the picture than it really is because about half of the width is the camera's reflection...

I only detect issue #1.
About #2,3: The case seem very solid with no substantial gaps.

No bumps or any substantial gaps; the case does indeed creak, but i just noticed it reading your thread and trying it out.

almost perfect
Overall Build quality is okay,
But there are three important things made me disapointed..
1- Very bad operation of opening and closing of Back cover..
2- Nonhandy perimeter (chrome stripe) of the device.
3- Unreachable Softreset switch w/o opening back cover.

Near Perfect

Been using my black Jade for over 3 mnths now. love it. No defect detected yet. I think lilithpro's set is one of those that manage to sneak pass the QA team.
I think the designers forgot to put a hole on the backcover for easy soft reset.

The only problem I have is that I need to remove the back cover in order to change the mSD card or to perform a soft reset.
Ah, and of course that there is no Hard-SPL available so that I can flush the English ROM!.....

It seems like some others' sets have the same problems. Doesnt seem like an isolated issue.
I resolved it by ordering a new one, exchanging back covers, and returning the new one. Now the back cover fits perfectly, without any gaps and sounds. The little bump still exists, but doesnt bother me much.
I never open the back cover, the sim and µsd-card remain in the device, since the transfer speed via activesync and mass storage is really fast (it was horribly slow on activesync with my palm treo pro, and mass storage wasnt available), so the back cover is no problem for me.

Hermes battery door release button problem - info/image request

The battery door on my vario II won't come off when I use the release button. Can't remember ever noticing how the clasp/mechanism worked, could somebody either describe it or take some photos so I can see how to remove the back door without doing any more damage?
Thanks
James
Is the vario II door the same as the TyTn door ? I can't remember, if it is I can describe and get a picture within half to 1 bour.

Thank you! Though it doesn't look very good for finding a way to release the door without damaging it. Does it look possible to you?

This I think is bad news cos looking at the one I've got the back off at the moment, if the catch just slips out of engaging the white sliding catch mechanism then it gets really stiff. BUT there is a tiny prong on the black sliding catch that engages the white sliding catches!! (Sounds like this may have broken off, allowing catch to move freely because it's not engaging with anything.)
1. If it's under warranty I'd take it back and have a battle about whether you were "rough" or not, or whether their catch is crap.
2. You could prize up back cover. Not a good idea I think the back cover prongs will snap off.
3. Just dont't take back off!!
4. I think it may just be possible to remove the one screw (Torx) you can access with the cover on. Prize open the case just a fraction to allow a pin/needle to be used to slide the catch and release back. With the device face down you would need to pass the pin through above the central part of the catch and move the pin from right to left. You could in theory wthen completely remove the back housing and examine the catch.
Mike
hmm...well had a brain wave and gave the phone a bit of shake. Something inside definately rattles! On closer inspection it also appears as if half the clasp is working - moving the release switch makes the door move a tiny amount.
So it looks like i'll be going into t-mobile and seeing what they say!
Thanks for the help (I may need more if i can't get it replaced!)
Solution and slight embarrassment...
So, nothing was actually wrong as such!
I had been finding that my battery was getting hotter than I was happy with, so I had removed the sticker from the front of it to allow the heat to dissapate more efficiently. This had left a sticky residue on the battery which had stuck to the battery door.
So that's me feeling a bit stupid!
Just pleased it's problem solved - good news

Maybe I'm Retarded, HOW DO I OPEN BATTERY COVER???

I just got this phone and I have read through the manual and looked at the picture of the cover off the phone in the quick start guide. Maybe I am retarded but sliding the phone up like it says in manual isnt doing anything. How can the battery cover for a phone be so hard, I am looking at my sim card and battery next to the phone right now and I'm like putting those 2 in the HTC hermes was no problem at all.
First device I have ever encountered where I couldnt even figure out how to open the battery cover to get the darned thing powered.
The Trinity is hard to open the first time but easier after that. The cover is tighter than other devices I have used. I suggest you cradle the device face down in the palm of one hand with fingertips holding each side and one finger just around the top edge. Then use the thumb of your other hand to push the back cover away from you pushing on the corner of the back cover near the USB connection.

No you are not retarded just push the cover up, it will be hard for the first time since everything is new but it becomes easier after couple of times.
Hold it in your left hand face down and puuuusssshhhh with the right.
pu pu pu pu pu push it good , ooh baby baby
When I went to the shop to test a Trinity the vendor tried for 20 minutes to open it. Finally I had to do a search on the web on his laptop to find out how to open the phone
haha
i also had some serious difficulties in opening the cover too... i was almost breaking a sweat...
yeah.... I was also cursing Dopod about the user manual that only has an arrow... Thinking they'd stuffed it and the product is just another product from the usual suspect manufacturing countries with poor documentation... Searched online, found nothing, then pushed real hard... Bit of a bastard that.
For anyone else who wants to read through some other (sometimes funny) experiences with the battery cover, look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=283976
It was really embarrassing also for me, ... a computer specialist not
able to install the battery on a phone !!! ... It took me about 10 minutes,
several web searches, reading the manual chapter 3 times, trying to
discover some new messages .... until I gave a little bit more energy
trying to open it !
With the phone on the table, screen on the bottom, just move the back cover to the phone top.
Heh, so glad it's not just me..
Had the exact same problem, took me 20 mins. Of course, having spent the buxx on this, last thing I was going to do was force it! Had a bad experience with a $400 piece of electronic gear, within 20 mins of getting it was heading out to use it the first time and a.) fumble dropped it, just as I was walking and my foot was swinging out so b.) basically drop-kicked it down the sidewalk. Got some wonderful scratches all across the faceplate. All in the first 20 mins. Not going to do that again with anything if I can help it!
I find the cover fit a nice change to my previous phone - a Blackberry Pearl... it's cover would fall of by merely looking at it!

hahaha i like that one! cover would fall off just by looking at it! maybe you have telekenetic powers you didn't know about.
anyways i too had the same problem. it was obvious to me how to open the cover but god it was really stuck on tight. i spent 10 minutes trying to slide the damn cover and my fingers just kept sliding off the shiny new surface.
I hope this helps. I had problems openning it at first, but got instructions from my saler.
Basically put each hand on each side like you are praying, then slide in different directions. The cover should get off. Hope this helps.

Faulty Xperia - Ideas

Hi guys, I appreciate that this may not be the correct Forum but I get alot of knowledge from this site so if you guys dont know, no one will!!
My Xperia optical pad/joystick is having a mare...each time i rub my finger over it, my X1 trys to dial out and skips to menus. The phone has apparently become "moist" acording to the Vodafone shop (Which to me seems like an excuse)
I ahve wiped the device back to factory settings and the same errors keep happening. I have turned the Opt Pad off in settings but the pad still reacts to touches and just jumps though menus and try's to make calls!!
Is there a way that I can get this fixed or resolved or has anyone else got any ideas. This may be a hardware fault.
Thank you all.
Well I can imagine dust being behind the scroll 'wheel'. How about you try to blow it out with a can of compressed air?

Hi,
Thank you, I have used a can of air and this seemed to make little difference.
Maybe I could get the device apart and give it a pro clean although I feel the actual joystick me be capput :/
Other ideas?
Thanksagain.
Moist? The only way I can see a phone becoming moist is either from a bit of rain or sweaty hands. Either way, phones are designed to withstand this otherwise they would be completly useless for outside use..

I have the same issue. It does seem to happen more when I have been using the MobiPocket Reader to read a book for a while ... maybe my sweaty thumb is causing the issue ;-)
Seriously though, if this is really true about moisture I may have to trade my X1 in, it drives me nuts when this happens.
Is there a way to clean the optical joystick properly? (I'm going to try the air-from-a-can idea as well)

Nah, AutoScroll just irritates me , get distracted for a second and you lose your place.
I've resorted to using 'tap the screen to go to next page' option. Seems to work well BUT the point is the X1 shouldn't have this issue.
Vodafone have offered to 'repair' it for me, since it's still in warrenty, but it means sending it away for 10-14 days and in the meantime they can give me a 'loaner' which will of course be a peice of crap (I'll just use my TYTN).
Update:
I have found the issue! After looking on Google I came across a YouTube video of how to dismantle and reassemble the X1.
Turns out one of the transistors on the Optical pad circuit board had become slightly coroded, so I cleaned this up with a small soft brush and a minute drop of meths and put it back together and BINGO!
Also while the screen was out I left it overnight in airing cupboard in a ziplock bag with a pack of Sylica(Spelling) Gell.
Search YouTube for: "Xperia assemble Front/Back" User; CKY1
Hope this goes to help someone.
Cheers guys
in my case, I just adjusted the joystick to lower sensitivity...It worked without surgery..
so technically vodaphone was right. and it was a moisture problem.

Does your G1 screen have any "flex" with the screen open?

Hi,
New G1 today - With the screen slid open it feels almost loose (Eg, I can wiggle the screen about backwards and forwards [NOT slide it back into device]).
I do not find this problem when the G1 is in its PDair case however this is most probably because the leather strap that goes around the top of the phone removes any slack that it seems the G1 has.
I do not really want to return the phone as this is my 3rd handset (First 2 were faulty) and would be able to cope for it if this is a known thing that many have however if this is a significant problem I'd have no option...
Look forward to hearing from you.
Cheers.
My Dev phone has a fair amount of flex. I thought about trying to take it apart and tighten it up, but I think I'll let it get a little wear and tear before I go messing around with it like that. The only thing I am really worried about is if I ever drop it with the screen open which could result in it snapping all the way off, but in normal usage it isn't too terribly bad.

It's normal and due to the relatively weak construction of the sliding arm design. Basically the entire screen swings and is held in place on all axes by one thin metal arm.

Thanks for such brilliant replies - The photo inparticular is very interesting.
Only thing is reading back my description I'm not sure if I was clear.
Imagine holding the keyboard still and lifting the screen into and out of the photo... The screen has some give or flex in this axis.
Even now I'm not sure I've explained it well... Can you please confirm you understood correctly before and this behaviour is normal for a G1?
Thanks!
Basically there is no axis that the screen does not have a bit of give in, if you give enough force. Of course if the screen is just flopping around loose then that's probably a defect. But it's normal to be able to lift the screen away from the rest of the body when the screen is closed. Hopefully the next iteration will have a more robust design that attaches with atleast two points on the main body.
My above issue is when the screen is open (As in fully slid out)... I wouldn't say it is completely floppy but requires very little force to move. I don't mind if this is a design "flaw" but want to know so that I know if I need to return my G1 or not.
Thank you very much for all of your help - If you could confirm regarding my issue being when the screen is open (Fully slid out) that would be great.
Thanks again!
yea this is happening to me too, and i know its not normal bc my phones brand new and it didnt do this until the other day, and my other friends phones dont do it either
Not that this is what you want to hear....
I'd get another one.
HTC needs to get their crappy work back. I mean, I love what they do, but they don't exactly prioritize doing it well. If we keep sucking it up, they'll keep doing crappy work.
I'd say unless the screen unit is moving 1.0+ millimeters away from the casing then forget about exchanging. Some devices have looser screens than others. If your device has play in the lower left corner more than a millimeter then it is beyond the average. However, you should keep in mind that you might get a refurb in return and it could be worse or have other defects.

This has been asked few times by the folk who change casings but forget to move the magnet from the old casing to the new one. The switch is magnet operated and in fairness it's a tiny thing that is not obviously a magnet. See here:

PS not sure you really need to glue anything on the back of the screen do you? Perhaps a little tape might be better if really necessary.

I know this is kind of an older thread, but when I searched for my problem, this is the most recent thread that came up.
I'm having a similar problem to the OP--I recently took my phone apart per the wiki because one of my tracks completely came off the rail. When I put it back together, I had an extra small square shaped rubber piece that fell off the motherboard and my keyboard is unrepsonsive when I slide it out in addition to it not going to landscape mode. The only thing is that I didn't take apart the part of the case with the magnet--I was able to get the slider thing back on the track without completely removing the very back housing. Is there anything else that might be causing the problem?
Sorry if this aspect has been gone over before; when I searched, this was the only thread I saw with a similar problem.

Oh dearie me!!!
First, the little rubber piece is the microphone cover from the bottom end of the motherboard.
Second, the screen orientation does not work because the magnet operated switch is attached to the keyboard cable which is obviously not working because as you say the keyboard is not responsive.
The likely cause of both the keyboard problem and the orientation problem is this connector:
It's under the back cover and is OFTEN forgotten because when you replace the motherboard the push in connector gets curled up beneath the board rather than curling around to be plugged in. (OR you just need to push it firmly into place)
A wider angle picture:

Oh, and WELCOME to XDA-Devs
Mike
I remember that little metal piece but did not remember to put it back when I was putting my phone back together. I'll have to give that a try later as I've come down with the flu. Thanks for the help!
Thanks for the advice Mike. It worked like a charm. Turns out one of my sliders coming off the tracks was the best thing that happened to my phone. In taking it apart, I also found that the speaker connection had completely come off which was the cause of my phone not having sound. So now aside from some cosmetic damage, my phone is back to working like new.
