Locking the HD - Touch HD General

Hi all,
I have decided to uninstall S2U2 and I don't want any other locking applications. However, is there is a way I can have the standard device lock activated with a short press of the power button?
Currently I am having to hold the 'End call' button until it locks, then turn the screen off with the power button.
Thanks

I have a pin setup and use the short press of the power button to put the phone into powersave 0 whixh then outs the phone into pin lock after a short while

If you push the hang off button for more than 10seconds, it will be locked

No...

I don't know about your device...
On my HD you can press the end button and count until 3, and the device is locked

I can't remember whether it's in HD Tweak or Advanced Config, but there's an option to automatically lock the keypad on screen turning off (both timed out or power button press I assume, but not tested) so you could try that?
Edit: instead of being lazy I actually looked it up - it's in HD Tweak, option 4.1; Lock -> AutoLock
Just tried it and it works, turn backlight off by short power press and it's locked a well as screen turning off!

Good tip: works for me!
By the way: you can configure what happens when you pres the "disconnect" button too.

Guys
Thanks for this thread. I am very confused when it comes to locking the phone. Can anyone tell me...
Does the built in device lock work well? Will it keep the phone locked when a call comes in ?
If so, then why do people use S2U2 or other third party apps? Also some people say that S2U2 drains the battery. Is this true? How does it drain the battery?

The HD tweak had the disadvantage that when the screen turns in 'shaded' state the device is also locked.
Then when unlocking the device the screen stays 'shaded'.

Maybe it takes you 10 seconds to count to 3.

I've finally got there with locking my HD... I had a S710 before the HD, and I liked the fact that on that I could hold down the "end call" button, and that it would lock the phone and turn the backlight off. The screen would then turn off completely after whatever time I had entered (2 mins I think). And on unlocking the device the backlight would turn on.
On my HD I have now disabled the device password, but enabled my PIN request, so that it secures the phone if it has been turned off completely. This means that I can now hold down the "end call" button for 3 seconds or so and it locks the device (requiring a 2-tap process to unlock, like the S710). I have also used the standard windows mobile settings (power) to have the backlight automatically turnoff after 30 seconds, and have used HD Tweak (setting 4.1) to autolock the device when the backlight turnsoff. The only problem is that when AutoLock happens using HDTweak, when I unlock it the backlight fails to turn back on, even once I have started using the screen. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Just to confirm my above question regarding this specific feature of HD Tweak... I have got this working on my HD now too, but when it autolocks, and I unlock it, the backlight doesn't turn back on, and the only way to make it turn back on is to hardbutton off and on the device (not power-off, just press the button the top of the phone and press it again).
This is stopping me from using the HD Tweak autolock now, which is annoying because it does precisely what I need! Can anyone offer any advice?
I've just realised that it actually says within HD Tweak itself (on 4.1 option selector) that this is a known issue... any idea on if and when it will get fixed?

How about using Gyrator to lock the device? I have set it to lock the device and switch off the screen on inserting the stylus. Also, I have it set to unlock and switch the PDA on when the stylus in removed.
Simple. Works for me, anyway!

Hi,
Is this similar to an application my friend had on his iphone. Basically, when he needs to use the phone, he needs to put in a pin to unlock. I think the Nokia E61 has a similar feature.

Mhh, I also think it's very annoying. I first used the auto lock feature by setting
HKey_CURRENT_USER/ControlPanel/BackLight/AutoDeviceLockEnable = 1, but I also have the backlight-issue, which is really annoying.
I also installed S2U2, but after installing that program the battery-life was inacceptable. By now I'm using the manual method, pressing hang-up for 3 seconds. It works, but I often forget it, and it then happens easily that I press the hard-button which awakes the phone from standby and I make pocket-calls.
The auto-lock feature is also exactly the thing I need, except the fact that I get the backlight issue then. Does anybody know how to fix the backlight issue? Maybe by editing another key in the registry?
Regards,
Tobi

As I said in the hint topic, in order to lock my device I just press the power off button (this activate the stand by), simple and fast

I use S2U2 at first, but it drains power too much, so I uninstall it after 2 days.
Then I use your method - hold the end call button to lock the device.
Now, I change the right softkey to invoke a small application that will turn off the machine (just like press power button). When I take out the stylus, the machine will on again.
Thus, I don't need to press any button, and I feel it is better......personally.......

Yes, but when I activate standby and put the phone into my pocket, I often accidently hit the button again, which reactivates the phone. hit_one_button_to_unlock ist not tobi-proof

The keys lock anyway when the device is in standby mode - IIRC there's an option to set it so that when in standby the only key that can be pressed is the power button.

true, but when it comes out of standy, I.E. someone calls me, the softkeys are active. Then half the time I pull the phone out of its case, it hits the ignore softkey and sends my caller to voicemail. The only way i've found to resolve this without buyin a new case is the use the lock feature on the phone.
I use VJDeviceLock on my Mio, which doesn't have a power off button. So I use it to lock the device and switch it off, ie make a better power off button.
However, Matt's "yet another device lock app" is better then mine. Try it out.

Locking / S2U2 / Stand by questions

Hi folks
I'm back again with some more dumb questions (bear with me - I'm Irish).
On my old Nokia, I could lock the phone by pressing 2 keys and hey presto, phone now safe!
With the HD, things seem a bit complex. Firstly, there's power managenent that controls how long the back light stays on for and how long the phone stays on for before going into stand by.
Q1. Is standby not another form of locking ? If so why not just press th epower button whenever you want to lock the phone and be done with it ?
Then there is the built in locking software that comes with the app.
Q2. Whats the problem with this? (i.e. long pressing the end key and choosing 'Lock the device'; Why do we even need S2U2 ?
Then there's S2U2 itself. The settings page is long and complex.
Q3. Is there a S2U2 manual anywhere ? (to explain some of those ambiguous settings)
Finally, and here is my most important question...
Q4. Can I use my HD like I used to use my Noika - i.e. press a key or 2 to lock the goddam phone an just be done with it ?
As it is, when I want to use my phone, I have to press the power button to take it out of standby, and then I have to slide the S2U2 unlock switch. Its a lot of hassle just to make a phone call.
Is it me? Am I that stupid? What am I doing wrong ? What am I missing ?
Doesn't pressing the "End call" button for 2-3 seconds also lock the phone?
Regards!
I do understand what you're saying. I figured out something really basic just the other day, that is if your phone is locked or in sleep mode just pull out your stylus and it'll unlock and wake up.
Just 1 movement.
Sorry if this is really common knowledge and you already know this but sometimes we overlook the more basic functions on such a complex device!!
Cheers

I like how the phone unlocks when you take the stylus out but i didnt like how it locks the phone when you put the stylus back in, so i removed that function using the options in gyrator
I have got TOUCH HD since 1week.
I haven't problem with touch hd like touch diamond.
it is in my pocket but the new phone canvas and the sensitive key prenve nt missing call.
for me no need s2u2 or pocket shield like diamond.
is there a registry option for disabling the unlock when the stylus is removed/falls out ????

Standby locking
I also "lock" my phone by sending it to standby with the power button. This seems to work realy good for me. The only problem is that the HD wakes up if someone is calling. So i often answer a call by accident. Does anyone know a way to deactivate the automatic wake up?
I tried the registry hack with autolocking but this doesn't work for calls either.

Is Wake on Home Button Push Possible?

Hey, did anyone found solution... is it possible to tweak settings somehow so that display turns on by pushing home button? Or do I really have to push power button every time?
I know of volume button tweak, but.. that one is no good (volume settings gets displayed)... Any other ideas, suggestions? (other than "pull the stylus")
Thanks!
Try AE Button Plus. You can customize a lot of buttons. I didn't tried what you asked, but it worth a try.
Anyway, take care using it.
I would say not. There appears to be no power to these lower buttons while in standby, so no software could work?

No, for the reasons given.
BUT... you could use MobileMagic to toggle the screen on/off when device is turned face down. That way when you turn it face down, screen goes off and buttons are locked. To turn it back on, turn devicedevice face down again.
You do need to go to Start-Settings-System-Power-Advanced and untick the option, "Turn off device if not used for", because if the device gets turned off (instead of just screen off) it won't respond.
I have it set to turn screen off on reverse portrait too,
so it turns off automatically when I put it in my pocket.
Im also afraid for that power button... used it a lot on my diamond so it got bricked, its so gentle... Im using it as much as little possible now on mine HD for that reason.
I have s2u2 unlock on stylus out, so I pull out the stylus, the HD comes on and unlocks. It's so simple.

That's not possible for the simple reason that the buttons below the screen are part and parcel of the touch screen, so if the screen is off, they won't work.

That is correct.
Power consumption, in this case, depends on what applications are left running. GPS, streaming video, etc would be a bad idea to leave running. But more workday apps use very little juice when the huge power drain of the screen is turned off.

Lock power button on TD2

Is there any way to lock the power button on the TD2?
I would like to keep the device suspended, with the screen off, even when the power button is hit.
This is to avoid that the screen of the device gets accidentally switched on when I carry it in the pocket of my jeans. This happens all the time, leading to battery drain.
I have tried TouchLockPro, it locks everything except the power button.
Any way to set this up?
Any application providing this feature?
If you lock it, how do you want to wake up the device?
I wouldn't mind finding a way to do something similar. Maybe not lock the button entirely, but make it so that you have to press the power button for a long time (say 3 secs), or press the power button and the hang up button and the same time.
no offence but if you did this wouldnt it unlock when you pull out the stylus?
and also you can change that go to start => settings => system/personal => keylock (also not sure if keylock will be installed as i dont have one, but you should be able to find it on here)
Then you can change the wake up to be any of the buttons, current setup or none.

No, this wont do what is needed. The Keylock simply stops someone from using the phone. It won't stop the screen from coming on accidental in you pocket.
You can 'lock' the phone from accidental use by pressing and holding the 'hang up' button, but again this has nothing to do with screen activation.
It is true that pulling out the stylus will both switch on and unlock the phone though, so disabling the power button may not be all bad. I still think it would be better to activate the screen via a single long button press, or some such.
Totally agree with swinster's comment and proposal.
- Lock the phone by pressing + holding "hang up" button (already implemented)
- Keep phone locked and screen off until
either stylus is pulled out
or power button and hang-up button are pressed at the same time
But disable screen-on when power button alone is pressed (like it is now).
- Anybody able to implement this proposal?
Meanwhile, how are you guys carring around your Topaz without the battery being emptied within a day (because of the described issue)?
This would be a great solution.
Mine switches on in my pocket all the time, they should have recessed the button, I thought about trying to remove it.

Its a bit of an overkil, but my laptop come with me most places.
Reminds me of the Morecambe and Wise sketch (??) where the battery was the size of a suitcase.

When you set EnableInputAtSuspend = 0, it will not unlock the power button at suspend. . It will then only awake via the Stylus. But I do not know if this setting also works on the Diamond2.
I am having some odd problems with mine if i press the power button to put it into standby. Sometimes when i press it it turns itself straight back on others it will come back on if i shake it (like the G Sensor is somehow linked to bringing it out of standby). Can you guys check this so i can confirm if i have a faulty unit please?
I think I read somewhere that someone had a similar problem - might be the stylus sensor thinking you have remove the stylus.

Thanks, sounds plausible, I'll call the supplier tomorrow.
I am sure that on my D810 I could set the lock on at zero seconds with no pin code. Then the keylock would come on every time I came out of standby but with no change of accidentally starting applications and making calls.
On my D2 the password is compulsory for keylock.
Any solution here? I don't want a pin code.
I power button fix would be even better to also save battery. The accidental turning on is a very annoying feature.

This is still, by far, the most anoying "feature" of the TD2 phone. I can't believe that HTC did not have the forethought to think that people might actually put the phone in their pockets.
It should be a simple fix so that when the phone is off or in standby, the power button has to be press for say a second before the phone will come on, rather than just a single tap. They can do this to turn the phone off, so why not on?

How to lock the screen by turning it off?

Hi, my typical procedure before putting the phone in the pocket is to hold right soft button to lock the screen and to switch off the screen with the power button. I wonder if there is a way to do it at once. You press the power button and screen goes off locked?
Thanks.s.

Yes, if you just press the power button the screen goes off but it is not locked and although touching the buttons does not turn it back on, if an sms comes in and wakes the device the buttons are then active and could be accidentally touched whilst in your pocket. With the screen locked this does not happen and you need to first unlock the screen to access the sms or the device in general.

Oh ok thanks for the info. Mine does unlock when I get a call/sms but I text a lot so I prefer it to do that, otherwise I'd be wasting a lot of time unlocking it every time I got a message.
Thanks for the hint ClydeB1 and thanks for the cab Fallen Spartan.
I tried SL 1.7 and there are three things, which I do not really like.
1. The phone returns to the very same screen where it was switched off. Some may consider it a pre. I prefer to see the clock when I switch it on.
2. The screen blink once when the phone is switchd on. I find it a bit irritating.
3. I do not see how I can uninstall it.
So, I wonder if you can undim the screen in HD Tweak by touching it or you need to do something extra?
You uninstall it as with any other cab. It's called Chobit Company Smartlock on the list of apps.
If you do use the hd tweak edit, you'll need to push the power button twice I think (it's been a long time since I used it I've forgotten), the first time to activate the screen (you'll see the screen but the backlight will not light up properly) then again to undim and then you can unlock the screen. I think that's the sequence, you'll need to play a little.

The way I had activated the lock was by pressing and keeping pressure on the end call softkey, after a few seconds it vibrates and activates the lock. It comes on automatically when you put the screen off or restart the phone.
Regards.
Auto-lock screen
I'm running CLEAN ROM (B version) with SPB Mobile Shell.
Considering I don't want any superficial apps installed on my HD, I used HD Tweak and turned autolock on.
To get over the "background light not undimming after locking" problem, I initially unchecked "Automatically adjust backlight" under Settings > System > Power > Backlight and set at 100%. I also set the "Dim backlight on Device" when on battery power to the same time as "Turn off device if not used for". In my case that was 1 minute. I tested and this worked fine.
I then went back in and checked the "Automatically adjust backlight" checkbox.
I also performed the wake up with volume button reg edit making it easier to wake up device.
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Keybd]
"DefaultKeyLock"= 0
UPDATE:
Just tested again and I realised if you wake up device but don't unlock. The screen will automatically dim. Unfortunately if you unlock immediately after, the dim screen issue rears it's ugly head again. The only workaround at this point is to completely disable dim backlight.
