Unable to connect to network - Networking

I am on an AT&T 8525(see signature) running WM 6.1. I am in an area where my phone shows that I am on AT&T's network in the southeast US with 2 bars but I have no service. I cannot make a phone call although I occasionally receive a call, I cannot answer it. I also cannot get any data connection to work except the occasional SMS message. My wife is on T-Mobile with an 8125 and she has about the same coverage although she can make and receive calls about 90% of the time so there is no doubt that we are on the fringe of coverage.
I've tried changing the network band on my phone with no luck(trying to see if for some reason T-Mobile is on something different than AT&T). I tried upgrading my radio ROM as well to see if that would help(see sig) but didn't change anything. In other areas, with just the one bar of signal strength I've been able to make calls 100% of the time. It's only this one area that gives me fits.
I have FieldTest.exe on my phone but must admit that other than looking at the pretty numbers, I don't really know how to interpret the results of that app. Any suggestions?
Rick

call can't come in while data always on

I just switch to 3G instead of 2G. I want to experience the high speed internet suffing via my handset.
But I found the problem is that the phone call can't came in if I using the 3G data. Not even transfer to security services. Just a "Busy tone".
Check with the service provider and they are now checking with their technical dept to see if they can found the problem.
They said that the call should be able to come in because the phone call channel is different to the data channel. :?:
Anyone experience the same problem?
I experienced the same problem with my CHT9000. You may change the setting to GSM then call can come in when you using GPRS but you can't enjoy the high 3G speed on data transmittion. Anyone has better solution?
complicated issue; can be the same with GPRS/EDGE ; I made a lot of research read below;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=54738&highlight=
It is interesting. I don't have this kind of problem while I am using GPRS. But it happen to my new network provider (3G).
Lucky you then
At least you have GPRS/EDGE working and as a result it is absolutely a network provider issue.
I talked every detail with a guy in my Net. Op. and seems can be solved by "tricky switching something on" but they could not make me believe that this is not thier mistake. Because Class B phones MUST suspend the data flow and accept incoming calls for the technical point, only class A phones (no retail ATM) can make data flow and GSM talk at the same same.
GPRS is 2G, EDGE is 2,5G and same tecnique as 3G, only speeds are lower, so I beleive if u use 2G suspend while incoming calls your Net.Op. can solve the problem if they want
I have this strange problem with my vario II.
I am using Tmobile GPRS on both 2g and 3g network, If I am using the 2g phone works if If am using 3g phone doesn't work if I call it, the phone rings but doesn't alert me. The most annoying problem I am having is the phone switches between 2G and 3G if I am in a call the phone goes silent can't hear anything the display shows the call as connected and around 5-10 seconds later the phone drops call drops. This happens even if the data connection if not active.
What is the deal with that? anyone else have this problem.
Phone band settings are below
network type
Auto
GSM
GSM(900+1800)+UTMS(2100)
I've just discovered the same problem with my orange branded tytn, I'll be phoning them later to ask what they can do about it.

Works perfectly on T-Mobile UMTS for me. I did flash the Dopod 838Pro ROM though.
will flash the dopod rom in the morning. I am currently using the imate rom, and the tmobile rom the device shipped with had to many slow downs so it had to go. if this fixes the drop out issue I will be happy if not the phone will be in its box till a rom update. got the phone cheap so don't really mind. nice phone/pda apart from this issue in my line of work can't afford to miss or drop calls.
so is this a hardware or a software issue then?
No harware problem, it is absolutely software issue. Read my posts above and the links I gave
No problems here I'm afraid.
Voda v1605 running the Voda Blackberry Client, so either 3G or GPRS (where no 3G available) on all the time. Calls and SMS received perfectly.
Only issue I have is when using 3G, unlike home wired broadband, I cannot use multiple applications through the single 3G connection (e.g. Blackberry client on and surf too)

Incoming calls go to voicemail with active data connection

I've got a T-mobile UK touch plus.
Currently, if I am using the data connection then all incoming voice calls are being sent to voicemail. This occurs with a GSM connection, which is part of the spec and is fine, but also with the 3G connection, which should allow the incoming voice call through. I have spoken to t-mobile and they acknowledge this problem and say they are working to fix it.
Is it likely there will be a fix for this? Is there a radio ROM already available that fixes the issue?
Sorry if this has already been covered - I searched with a pretty wide variety of terms and didn't find anything conclusive.
I have the same phone, same network... and it still rings while i have the "3g connected" symbol (3g with two arrows pointing left and right) showing.
Havent tried while connected to GPRS cuz im not sure how to force it into G mode while im near a phone.
Sorry, I should have been clearer - the phone will ring with an unused 3G connection, but not when data is actually being sent/received. This is the behaviour you would expect from GSM, but the 3G spec should allow voice calls through regardless of data - my Vodafone v1605 has no problem with this. T-mobile say it is the device not the network, I just wonder how likely I am to get a fix for this? It could be a problem with activesync using the data connection quite frequently.
A good way to test it is with google maps, or something that will maintain a constant connection, then call your phone. 3G should put the call through, but it will be rejected to voicemail instead.
FYI to put into GSM mode;
Settings>Phone>Band>Set top option to GSM, leave bottom on Auto
same problem here. but i only expreienced that randomly
i know that gprs can not handle data and voice. but 3g should, right?
Yes, 3G should be able to run voice and data streams simultaneously without any problems. I'm surprised there is not more interest in this because it seems to be a pretty major problem with the device if you cannot receive calls while browsing or otherwise using the data connection.
Me too
I experienced this too. I have an direct HTC Touch dual rather than the t-mobile branded version but I'm using a t-mobile sim. I use Exchange Activesync and am missing calls all the time.
fwiw, i experience the same with a Nokia e61 on 3-AT network with exchange active.
It seems that T-mobile have fixed their network today to allow calls while using data. Bonus.

X1i when using 3G on AT&T I cant make or receive calls???

So when I leave all the band settings to auto on the phone, it immediately connects to AT&T's 3G network and shows the "H" in the title bar it worked for a little while then calls stopped coming through, after a hard reset it works again with calls for a few hours, then it begins to fail.
If I switch the bands to GSM and manually select the frequencies (850 + 1900, according to wm) then it connects to the EDGE network, and I can make and receive calls as I please, no problems, except for the crappy network speed.
So someone help me out here please, is the phone defective, or is it not working as it should because of the lack of the 850 band? I know that AT&T works on either or but this problem has me stumped.
Other than this rather huge problem (phone that cant make calls), I absolutely love the Xperia and would hate to return and wait for another.
did you try to use the connection wizard to let the phone config itself?
after I put my iphone sim in it shows the H/3G icon on anf off all the time, while I can receive call I was unable to go online.... after someone suggested me to call att to update the imei on my account to the x1, I found that I still have to go to connection and change the setting myself b4 it can go online. you will have to remove the user name and pw in media net setting and uncheck the proxy server.
I guess my case is a little different than yours but I guess you can give it a try... good luck =)
Thanks, I actually haven't tried that since i figured it would be the same as what happens when you turn the phone on for the first time, when it autoconfigs.
if it say it detect a new sim and ask if you want to do the auto config then I guess its the same... but again I did need to change some settings inside the network config to make it work too... so I am guessing the "auto config" has some flaw in it
No problem with my X1i when I venture in a1900mhz area close to my home. I live in a small town in Ca. only 850mhz here. But in the larger Metro area around me... No Problems with calls or hspeed data access...
Stuart
Thanks for the replies, It looks like the Configuration wizard in the settings menu did the trick. It do something else that the autoconfig doesnt. The phone seems to work now just fine, although it doesnt hang on to the signal as well as my old k790a. The office I work in is an ATT dead zone and I could make calls using the K790a with only one bar, with the Xperia it either doesnt go through or drops the call.
Again this is better as it works now, just not as well as my old phone.
Also, scl_electronics, so you are saying the X1i has both 850 and 1900mhz bands? I had a feeling mine did too, but I thought it was put to rest that that wasnt the case with the X1i....
Sorry Aaron J,
i should have been more specific!! Where I live, 3G is only on 850mhz band so I don't get access..Just The edge network. When I venture about 10 mile away toward the major Metro areas..The 1900mhz band are used. So the H is displayed, but I don't have those access problems for calls or data!!
But i am waiting to see if they can crack the rom for 850mhz-3G access!!

Oh ok thats kind of makes, sense although I thought the X1i didnt have an 850 band at all, so what frequency does it work off then?
Anyways, back to my problem....I spoke too soon, it dont work on 3G switched to EDGE. I might just try getting a new sim card, mine is a Cingular one from 2005, that has been in at least 4 different phones now including the X1i.

Well out here in Ca... 850mhz gsm/edge is used ..So I quad band gsm phone is handy!!!
Stuart
Yes it is! My little problem is a little confusing though as one thing I just realized that I didnt say before is that the phone has no problem connecting to the 3G network using HSDPA. I get full bars with the H icon pretty much everywhere in my area and my data speeds are very good. So I can surf the net, download programs, watch high quality youtube videos using the app in touchflo and even send and receive texts just fine.....just no calls when on 3G. I'm hoping its just setting somewhere and not a faulty device.
I live in Raleigh NC by the way so maybe it could be a faulty tower?
Well when venture into Stockton Ca. my phone switches to 3G-HSDPA:1900MHZ Without a connection hitch....
Have you tried a soft reset......
But when all else fails Hard Reset to the Rescue!!!
Btw... in several of my ppc-wm units when restoring to OEM setting(hard reset) there has been many time the process had a problem. So something would be screwed up!! So when You don't succeed, try another hard reset!!
Good luck,
Stuart
hey i was wonder if your problem is HSDPA/HSUPA being on, i have at&t also and it worked for the first few weeks fine with it being on then all of a sudden it stopped and couldn't connect to the internet, before i had the H/Edge showing up and also my email never updated when it was set to do it every 15minutes. Now that i disable the HSDPA/HSUPA i see 3G/Edge and email update all the time on the X1i. Just wonder if that might fix it, I'm all kinda still new to all this but i had my X1i for 2 1/2 weeks now.
Hello thanks for all the suggestions, Experiaenjoy, no I haven't tried mainly because I can connect to the data network just fine and get awesome speeds with full bars pretty much everywhere, all of my data related activities and programs work just fine (aka murder my battery life ). I just cant make calls while on 3G.
I talked to a coworker today who used to be a regional manager at AT&T hee said that he saw many cases of people who were having problems where it was due to the SIM card. He said they all had the older orange Cingular card and that an update to the new blue AT&T card solved all problems. So right now I'm trying to see if I can get mine updated (I do have an older Cingular SIM). Once I get that, I will do a hard reset (3rd one also done about 20 soft resets since I 've had it-I've installed a bunch of programs and tweaks) and skip the auto config and go straight to the connection wizard.

0 bars 3g/HSDPA leaving me uncontactable / dropouts

Hi all,
I realise there are many discussion threads linking to problems with maintaining connections and so on, but I'd like to ask for advice specifically about the HD2 switching from 'H/3g' down to 'G'.
Basically, I'm finding there is a fair delay between the HD2 being disconnected from a 3g network and needing to switch to 'G'. I'm in a patchy area right now, and I often look down at my phone to see it displaying 'H' or '3G' but with 0 bars. If I attempt to make a call, it sometimes seems to force it down to G, or it just hangs and I need to redial. During the time I'm on 0 bars I appear to not be contactable, i.e. no calls can be received.
Just now I made a call and the other party could barely hear me. I looked at the phone and I was on 0 bars of 3g. I had to disconnect and call back, with the HD2 then stepping down to G. Why couldn't this happen straight away as the 3g connection was struggling?
I'd like to know if there is any way I can force the HD2 to step down to G fast, or whenever there isn't 1 bar of 3g available? My Hermes was very fast at switching between the two, and I could easily hold calls on the road going through different areas with minimal dropouts.
I've been reading threads on here, someone advised changing the setting in 'Band' to another setting then back to 'Auto'. This didn't help for me.
This is probably a radio issue, but I'm on about my 4th radio now and am still struggling. On a side note, my HD2 isn't latching on to 3g and holding a steady connection anywhere near as well as my Hermes did, but I'll keep experimenting with radios. How is your HD2 comparing to other 3g devices you have?
Is there anything anyone can advise to ensure that I can actually be contacted when my phone is on and in an area with 100% 2g coverage (besides disabling 3g all together)?
Hope this makes sense.
Network: O2 UK
Location: Tunbridge Wells, South East England
Rom: HTC 1.66
Current radio (will be reflashed with something else today): 2.07.51.22_2
Thanks!
You can flash tmo radios with 1.66?!
Which ones have you tried, for reference.
Can't answer a call.
I'm on AT&T US. I have a T9193. I'm having a similar issue. The phone will not fall back to E or G while ringing or on a call. It just drops the call. By the way I show 5 bars of H and my download speeds are 500-700kbps. The phone bands are both on auto.
If I call my cell from a land line, I hear 2 rings then a fast busy. It does NOT fall back to voicemail. I can't pick the HD2 up at home at all. I wait for the caller ID then force the phone band to GSM then call the person back. It's not random at all. It is EVERY call.
If the phone is on EDGE it works fine for voice.
I have tried the 2.07.50 default radio and now I'm running the 2.10.50.
I use the SIM from my trusty x7500 as my main number and it's 2 years old. I also tried my backup number with is a SIM from last October.
I'm lost at this point and ready to back to my cracked x7500. At least I can make a phone call. That is what these things are supposed to do right?

[Q] Orange/t-mobile network sharing in the UK

Hi All,
Done a quick search on this and can't find anything relevent, but i apologise if a thread already exists.
Really a question for those in the UK on the t-mobile network. Have any of you attempted to sign up for the orange 2g roaming service yet? I signed up, recieved the confirmation text, replied to it, and received the final confirmation. However, I'm not sure it's working. The signal seems no stronger, and i still drop in my house.
Obviously i'm posting this in the android section because i'm running android myself and am wondering whether anyone in the same boat has managed to get roaming to work. Should the fact that we're on a non-official OS running off the sd card make a difference?
Oh and for completeness, i'm running shubcraft 1.5 rmnet.
Cheers fellas!
I'm quite happily flip flopping between Orange while at work and T-Mobile for everything else...
works like a charm for me though you do have to stick the phone into Airplane mode after selecting the different provider for the data to work ...

Many thanks for the reply Jezwick. So, just for clarity, you're manually selecting each provider as and when required? Because i can do that, i think. When i select orange though, whilst it registers with the network fine, i get a little "R" above the signal bar (any ideas what that means?) And the speed appears to be limited to Edge. Orange have a very strong signal round here, so i figure i should be getting GPRS really.
It's the auto-switching i'm not totally sure is working really. Is there any explicit indicator that it's flipping on it's own? Or do you just observe a generally better 2g signal, rather than say, a very weak 3g one? Round the house, my phone is still trying to make do with 1 or zero bars of 3g. I would have hoped it would flip over to orange more or less all the time under those circumstances. Nothing to stop me manually selecting it i guess though...

The R is indeed for roaming that's the way it works if your not on your 'own' network.. The 'flipped' service will currently only work at GRPS speeds at the moment but should be 3G by the new year
I have noticed mine flipping automatically but only once or twice in the last few weeks but only when I get NO signal from the current service.

Understood - thanks for the info Just done some reading and apparently EDGE is faster than basic GPRS. For some reason, i'd always assumed the reverse. Looks like the best option is just to have it always on orange whilst at home and use wifi for data (which i do anyway to compensate for the poor signal). Cheers!
