Nokia N97 compared with iPhone, Xperia X1 and T-Mobile (HTC) G1 - XPERIA X1 General

http://www.digitgeek.com/nokia-n97-compared-with-iphone-xperia-x1-g1/
"Final Thoughts:
It is turning out to be a great battle between Nokia N97, Apple iPhone and the T-Mobile G1 but with Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 nowhere in picture due to its ridiculous pricing and other cons."

IMHO this is all rubbish. "iPhone Killer" "Revolutionary" "Intuitive". Anyone remember all the hype for the X1 last march? ringing any bells?
That article complains about the X1 - "The Xperia X1 interface was slow which was its biggest drawback along with its lack of intuitiveness". so I assume they're comparing stock phones, praising Nokia and their now defunct symbian OS without even touching on the thousands of today plugins available for WinMo which totally revamp and customise your phone in any way imaginable. Christ, u can even imitate an iPhone near perfectly, anyone wanna try and do that on symbian?
oh yeh, N97 has 360 x 640 pixels resolution. hmmm great. why have all that screen space when your gonna see the individual pixels?
I'l give it some dues, it does look good and the multi touch is gonna be sweet. but as far as I can tell this phone is perfect for all those toyboys that cant get they're head around what an incredible machine the X1 is, dont know how to customise it to maximise practicality and aesthetics (or cant be bothered), or just want an easy way to look cool. Unfortunatly all of these things add up to one thing, - Nokia selling millions of units.
Lets face it, this will be released in July at the earliest at which time the X2/X5 will be the next 'iPhone Killer'.
Sorry for the rant, just now a little fed up by the amount of 'iPhone Killers' that we're gonna see come and go before people realise that if you want something as good as an iPhone GET an iPhone! if you dont want to go apple then get this N97. if you like fiddling and want the most customisable OS currently on the market go WinMo. Just my 2p, I wanted to rant this for ages and only just had a chance

The X1 was cheaper than the N96 for me on Vodafone. Really doubt the N97 is going to be a less.

What a biased review. You talk about the X1 at a few hidden places and then at the end conclude that it is a bad phone....What about the other great features of the X1. Damn I hated the X1 when I bought it but ever since I have started loving it more and more everyday.
What a crap review though...

Reads very pro Nokia and contra Sony Ericsson.
But the author makes one good point: Out of the box the N97 will be the best of these phones. But the endless possibilities of customizing WM will put the three other devices far behind the X1 and of course other WM phones.
The other thing: the N97 looks kind of retro. Not my style at least. And we will have to see if Nokia can solve their quality issues. Have seen Nokia N96s with dust in the display after 5 days of use ... and this new sliding mechanism as a new possible source of error too. So lets wait, and see how Nokia can stir the phone market.
At least some of the Apple-iPhone-Fanboys will drift to Nokia and S60.

Where the heck is multitouch on N97 like they wrote? I gues not even single touch would not work well. Let's admit that Nokia are kiddies regarding touch screen.
And watching the videos, the interface is sluggish and very very slow, and lacking animation )
What N97 would look if it would have window animation? They are years behind, and they should leave defunct Symbian to WinMo or Linux.
And, from those videos, it seems quite big . And even it's not a good lookin', due to materials that seems cheap, like Nokia Tube.
He he, pro Nokia article.
I wouldn't buy such a brick! At least as there's WinMo devices....

Thats a big plus for me. I hate the page transitions on the iphone. Its just too much. I'm glad Nokia didn't start to design S60 Touch this way and hope they wont in the future. Of course the same applies for WM.
Yes, the interface doenst look that good, but lets be honest - when did Nokia ever build good looking interfaces? The biggest advantage of Symbian 60 still is the out of the box functionality paired with possible system extension. WM lacks the OOTB experience like S60, but is far better when it comes to customization. The iPhone doens't even play in the same league if you ask me. Display resolution too low, OS too limited, standby too low etc.

my first post
I'm one of those people who don't reply or post...but I just really couldn't stand this......all of you guys are right...it is a biased review..
I LOVE MY X1

For me, the appearance of N97 is just like an copycat of HTC Tytn II.

Seconded. Somehow Nokia phones have always been associated with cheap cheap phones. In India every second and third person has a beater Nokia phone. I know that the N-series is of a higher class, but I think I will stick with my HTC WM phone

looooooool this is crap
xperia is better of all this devices

I actually think, that the N97 looks pretty interesting.. It offers some innovation to Symbian, which is needed..
I don't think the phone is better than the X1, but they appeal to two different kinds of people..
If nokia made it an E-series model, with metal and high-end material, it would have been more interesting..
I think I'll stick with my X1 and E90 (both wonderful devices)

I'm still using my TyTN II because I haven't seen anything that looks even slightly what I want - that is until now. The Nokia N97's hardware looks interesting. I like the size of the device. If HTC made a TyTN II with a larger screen, WMo, etc, I'd be the first in line.
I have absolutely no desire for the HTC Touch Pro with it's pitiful 2.8 inch screen. It really gives me no advantages over my TyTN II. I want a larger screen, excellent keyboard, and a the standard 3.5mm headphone jack.
I've been waiting for an Xperia but I cannot even find a Black X1a in the states. The $800 price tag is ridiculous and so are the panels. I want a fast, elegant, big screened, flat device that runs Wmo and maybe Android. I like the N97 screen size better than the X1s. It's a little wider.
Also while I'm *****ing, I might as well add that I think even Touch Flo is a waste of hardware. My fingers are so big I cannot even use it on a 2.8" screen. It works OK on my Blue Angels 3.5" screen.
HTC Wake up and build us an US Device for $500 unlocked with a 3.8 screen, querty keyboard, and the following 3G frequencies 850, 1700, 1900, 2100. If you don't there will be MID (Mobile Internet Devices) out shortly which will offer everything you do for a cheaper price.

May the Nokia be a good device, it doesn't matter, but I can't stand the point with the pricing.
The N96 is more expensive than the Xperia now and I doubt, that the N97 will be that much cheaper when it hits the stores
I consider Nokia as the highest priced brand in phones (I won't tell about Apple because Apple isn't a phone but a toy for me. I would never buy anything from Apple because there are dozens of devices that are better, prettier and cheaper). Additional, I had a N95 before -my first Nokia- and I definitely won't buy another phone from them. I was very disappointed with this thing

I had an iPhone, a N95-3 after that, and now an X1. IMHO, the touch experience on the iPhone wins hands down. The simplicity of the UI and the App Store were really great. As a touch screen phone, I couldn't help myself comparing the touch experience on X1 with the iPhone. Don't forget the iPhone came with a very usable web browser out of the box.
To me the X1 (or WinMo in general) is more of a phone for professionals. In regards to apps, you have to look for apps you want all over the places, whereas you are presented with newest apps everyday with the iphone app store all in one place. It's useful, convenient, and fun.
Each has its own strengths and weaknesses. Calling the X1 is out of the picture completely is a bit rubbish. They fail to compare the UNLOCKED price of the iPhone 3G (which is around 700-800) with the X1 pricing.

What to do as a US AT&T customer? X1 vs Touch Pro

I have an AT&T account through my work so I'm a bit limited in options. I currently have the AT&T 8525 (Hermes) and was planning to upgrade to the Sony X1 or X1a.
However, it seems that the Touch Pro (Fuse) will shortly be available for arround $300US via AT&T vs the X1 at $675 US from the UK or the X1a at $799 in the near future from Sony (unlocked).
I like the X1/X1a... but is it really work ~$400US extra?
Thoughts?
I've owned the Touch pro under Att (NO 3G in my area) and it was great to have the xperia just seems to be on a whole other level. The keyboard on the touch pro is magnificient and i truly hate the xperia keyboard. Everything else about the xperia is just perfect. I paid like 920 for mine with a 16GB card and if they said it would cost 300 bucks more i would've still bought it.
I believe u can get the fuze right now from att's website. So i guess the choice is yours. I would say get the xperia. No doubt about it
I ran your response by my wife... afraid it didn't pass the wife test :-(! I've never paid more than $300US for a phone.... so it's really hard to justify. I wonder if the X1 will be like the Touch HD and never sold by AT&T?
Its possible, maybe wait ill january and if theres no xperia announcement then go with the touch pro. Also places like expansys and other handset sellers offer discounts on the xperia if you buy a att contract through them
I just upgraded from the 8525 too and no matter which one you pick its gonna be soo much better. =)
I agree with Bxsteez, the xperia is on a whole other level. If you want a phone capable of being your phone, pda, and music/video player then the x1 is your choice. But if money is an issue then the Touch Pro makes as an awesome choice as well, especially with the phone price of AT&T brand compared to the x1 being almost a $600 difference its very hard to justify getting the x1 over the fuze now.
The X1a has already been announced. You can order starting today, shipping starts on the 28th. It will be $800 unlocked. check infosyncworld.com for more info. It was announced yesterday

That's another issue... The 2 US places I've seen it offered (Sony Store and J&R) are only listing the silver version. I'd really wanted the black :-(!

You should read what people are saying about the blk one on howardforums. They say their paint is chipping or something like that.
You know what, if you have to create a new contract w/ AT&T anyway, buy the Touch Pro and sell it on eBay. Then the cost to own this eye catching baby is not that much.
Don't see how this deserves a poll, but I found this --> Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1i Silver + AT&T Unlimited Plan ($129.99/Month, 24 Months, Unlimited Voice & Data), #X1iSLV-ATTUNLTD - eXpansys Inc
They might make another deal for the X1a too after release, but I'm an Australian so I don't know too much about it.

They want $589US for the phone and then $129US/mo (2 year commitment) for unlimited voice and data.
I pay about $35US/month for unlimited data and $0.06US/min for voice (via my company plan), so this doesn't seem like a good deal for me. But thanks for pointing out another option.

Now that's creative ! Thanks for the suggestion!
Yea that's probably best. Get the Fuze on a new number from letstalk.com for free, unlock it and sell it on ebay or something to offset the price of the X1a =)
Dunno why people say the X1's keyboard is abysmal compared to the touch pro. I actually thought quite the opposite... the touch pro's keys were so small and so close together where as the X1's is nice and spaced out I don't make any errors. Plus the angled screen helps too.
Don't even get me started on that cluster of buttons they call a d-pad.
X1 is worth it...
I owned the TP (European model) and other than the 3G that I now get on U.S. ATT with the Xperia, there are other reasons I'm happy with the X1.
These all have been mentioned before but there is no GPS lag, I get 30fps video at 640x480 (record and playback) and the finger prints aren't nearly as bad.
None of these things are fixed with the ATT FUZE. The things I miss from the TP is the 5 row keyboard and the excellerometer (G-sensor). For me, the other X1 advantages outweigh those two things though.
This thread is very helpful since I'm also seriously considering these 2 devices. I'm leaning toward the xperia, but I'm concerned about a few things.
1) Exactly how bad is the xperia keyboard? Every review says it's horrible compared to the Fuze. I had a chance to play around with the fuze keyboard only. It felt OK but my experience is limited with any type of keyboards, but would like to use more on my next phone, so this is important for me. Is it just a matter of getting used to on the xperia keyboard, or is it just unusable, as some reviews had indicated.
2) Next question is what is it that the xperia has over the fuze? Other than 3.5 jack and panels (which some people don't even like), is there anything that the xperia has over the fuze hands down? Does the 0.2 cm screen make it worth it? It seems like, on the other hand, the fuze has some important hardware advantage, including the g-sensor.
3) Build-wise, is xperia that much better? The fuze seems to be fairly solid, but I haven't had a chance to touch the xperia, so can't compare.
4) Is there any gps lag on the xperia similar to that experienced by fuze users?
The bottom line is $500 difference is a lot (hopefully, the difference won't be as much once it's more mainstream). I'm just trying to figure out if it's worth the money, and for now, worth the wait.

the difference between the keyboards is like apples and chicken lol.. I mean u can use the xperia keyboard but the keys are very flat and its kinda difficult to press the keys. I don't think its as bad as the HTC Wizard. I'd say its about equivalent to the TYTN II with the TYTN II being a tad better.

When you hold the xperia it just feels so much more solid everything moves smoother. I personally believe the xperia is some how drastically faster. The xperia can run tfl3d and the panels but from what i've been seeing they are trying to port the panels to htc devices. The screen on the xperia is much more sensitive and ur less likely to scratch the xperia's screen since its recessed. Lets see. I hate the xperia's tiny call and end buttons but i love the little optical pad. I hated the touch pro's surface buttons because they just felt cheap. hmmm i think that is about it

I experience gps lag on every device if its the first time ur running gps from a cold start. I think the xperia's has the least lag but its still pretty bad at first.

I can't really make the decision for you but i would say i'd pay an extra 500 dollars on top of what i paid for this phone and i paid 920 dollars for it with a 16GB card. I don't think i even want to switch to a different phone. I've never said that when i bought a phone and i've had the wizard, tytn, tytn II, touch pro, and a bunch of other smartphones like the s710, qtek 8310(don't know what this in htc lingo), mpx 200, and mpx220
Hope this helps

thanks for that i'm a fellow wizard user also this is my current device and it's a toss up between the x1 and the touch pro the touch pro (fuze) seems to be the more economical choice given the pricing but i just like the overall of the x1 but the price for one of those things is outrageous a person on boygeniusreport made a good point it should be no reason why cell phones cost more then laptops either the phones should be cheaper or the voice and data plans should be cheaper
I dunno about that. The smaller ur laptop gets the more expensive it gets. Once u step away from the average user things get expensive. A regular 15.4 inch laptop will cost u nothing but if u get an ultraportable they start getting pretty expensive and extremely weak in power, with the exception of those new badass atom processors. U kinda have to keep in mind this is also a phone. Most laptops aren't walking around with internet connections all the time although u could ;-)
I truly hate the fuze. I'm quite upset they got rid of the ctrl key so i assume u can't do the shortcuts anymore but i will see. I'll be using my upgrade to get a fuze pretty soon just to have it as a back up and i'll write up a comparison to that too.
I currently own both the FUZE and X1i...
Guess what? I'm a HUGE X1 fanboy. Love it...
But, also LOVE the FUZE. And, for me, it might actually be a better all around phone.. Sure the screen isnt as large, the pixels are smaller, and it's a tad slower, but, I love the iphone-like (capacitative) touchscreen. It rocks.
I really like not having edges on my screen. One of the best things about the iphone IMHO. This is a huge selling point on the FUZE
Both phones are similar in call quality- excellent. So far I like the FUZE keyboard a tad better... Haven't really tested all the features, but, as far as the video recording on the X1, I've found it does not live up to the hype... I get HSDPA on both, so they browse the web uber fast....
Anyways, both phones rock. I think this thread is a little biased. The FUZE really has a ton of great qualitites, and, it comes down to a matter of personal preference and needs..
Like I said, both phones are fantastic (I've owned every high end WM phone in the last 3 years) and these 2 are by far the best (have not yet tried Touch HD, but really need physical qwerty anyways)
All in all, you can't go wrong with either one..
Feel free to ask any more questions..

I must say i have to agree with the flush screen in the sense that i have fat fingers and its much easier to close apps on the fuze/touch pro. Now that i think about it i never used the stylus on the touch pro but i do find myself using it on the xperia.

Why is the Treo Pro so unpopular?

Just curious. I got one a couple of months ago, and to my mind, it's just about perfect... fantastic form factor, unbeatable battery life, and lovely 320x320 screen resolution. Feels great to hold in the hand. Keyboard very usable. Generally getting much better coverage than I'm used to as well.
It's easily the best smart phone I've ever used... for reference, my pda/phone history:
Philips Velo 500
Kyocera 6035
Kyocera 7135
Samsung i700
Treo 600
Treo 650
HTC Wizard
HTC Kaiser
Treo Centro
iPhone 3G
Treo Pro
So why no love? What shortcomings am I missing?
I have a pro & i've posed the same question, I think if it was released to a service provider 1st before talk of the pre then it would be more popular & more people would have one & they'd be cookin' up rom's like crazy!
Not to mention the unlocked price is crazy! but honestly so far it's the best most user friendly phone i've ever used! my only problem is keeping finger prints off it
That and no one seeming to care enough to cook rom's or wallpapers etc

I DO like my phone customized to work the way I do. But either Berdie or Malatesta said something on another forum that really says it all. I'm not quoting directly, but the statement was to the effect that you need to buy a phone because of what you like about it now, not the potential of upgrades & modifications (some of which may never come). It IS a great phone, but, till the Sprint version came out, Palm relied too much on word of mouth for marketing.
For such a pricey phone, it lacks in screen size an camera quality. I really do love mine, but look forward to wm6.5
I also think it's a great phone-- without a doubt, I think its lack of popularity has to do with Palm's financial situation and the 6 months it took for sprint to release it. But if you look at it, Palm's focus is on the Pre with its whole new operating system (WebOS). This will make or break them as a company... and I can't imaging sprint charging a lot more for the Pre than the Pro (to be competitive with the iPhone). So we've got a cool looking phone (pro), with a soon to be "old" operating system, with a 320x320 screen for roughly the same price as the pre. I can understand why they wouldn't waste the little money they have promoting it. Still sold me tho..
I agree... it took palm many years, but they finally made an attractive, comfortable, pocketable "Treo".... I guess it was too little too late. With phones like the Touch Pro and the upcoming Pre.... Treo Pro in synonymous with laser disc and beta max.. Timing is just off. Especially since Sprint is the main US carrier and they are also bringing the Pre... people just waiting I guess.
I'm not a fan of the Treo Pro's "Centro-like" keyboard; I really wish they could have preserved the nice keyboard from the 800w and used it on this device too.
Also, what everyone else has said is accurate: low-rez screen, lame camera, too little too late.
How much would an HTC WinMo Pro (or Android) touchscreen QWERTYbar phone with a BlackBerry Bold-style 480x320 screen rule? I think we're all truly waiting for a proper QWERTYbar to come into town. This 320x320 junk smacks too thoroughly of last generation.
I don't think it is unpopular at all. From what I understand and know it is very popular with corporate clients. Essentially the perfection of a line and form factor with bugs and limits of prior iterations all addressed.
That is very different than it being cutting edge and of interest to narrow groups such as here where people are interested in hacking, rom development and the cutting edge.
I don't know of anyone who is unhappy with theirs. If you know windows mobile and want a solid non-slider front qwerty this is perfect.
It is hardly "too little too late" from that persepctive.
Palms problem was its debacle with the 800w. The 800w was "too little too late at launch" and ahd so many problmes that it got discontinued faster than any phone. It had borken features Palm was never able to fix, very very poor battery.
My Sprint store was never able to sell the 800w, even at $100, but they sell Treo Pro very well.
I agree....I think overall it's a very popular phone that appears to be gaining steam.
I got mine for $99 from Alltel with a two year extension. Hard to beat that for a phone like this.
I'm still used to the old PalmOS but being a PC user wrapping my head around WM is not a difficult thing. Great features, Great phone.
Clearly the best...
I've owned too many WM cell phones and before that PDA's... Palm Treo Pro is clearly the best WM Palm cell phone I've ever owned...

I can beat it now, just upgraded to 2 Treo Pros at Alltel for $79 each. They even lowered the price on the HTC Touch Pro to 79$. The HTC was going to be my choice until I started reading up on the Palm. I'm moving from a Mogal.
It's not just the Palm Treo Pro. The Palm Treo 750 also seemed less popular then other WM phones at the time.
I've owned a Treo 750 then moved to: HTC Diamond > Nokia E71 > Palm Treo Pro.
At the moment I'm testing a Touch HD but my favorite devices to use are still the Palm Treo Pro and Nokia E71.
There are quite some tweaks that I perform to make the Palm Pro run better than it is when it leaves the factory. Should post them here. Still working on a Mortscipt program so users can apply the tweaks themselves. Need some extra time and a little help here and there. But as soon as it's finished I'll post it on my blog as well as on XDA of course
I am an user in China, what make pro so unpoplar I think it the price( in China). With lower price, the Samsung I780 can do the same as pro. I bought one PRO and my brother bought i780, his machine is more fast than my PRO. But the look of i780 is not as beautiful and morden as PRO, also the keys of 780 are not suitable when typing a long text. Hope I can learn more of PRO here.

Also, Palm is only sold by Vodafone. If you ask in any other shop for a Palm: "Palm? Whats that? Never heard of it." I f u ask in Vodafoneshop: "Maybe we can order it."
If you show anyone your phone: "Oh, you`ve got a BlackBerry?!"
Its not the Pro that is umpopular in germany, its Palm.
Why are the HTC phones such crap?
i have looked at the NOKIA phones recently, and they are light years ahead of this HTC bull****.
Both the Diamond, and the TP2 dont have a headphone jack?????
wtf
they are cheap plastic
their battery lives suck
The nokia phones are metal body, they have
HEADPHONE JACKS
CHARGING JACKS
and
USB JACKS!
OMFG! and this is standard on almost ALLLL their phones.
the Treo pro being possibly the only ok WM smartphone to have a headphone jack recently
Like what the hell is wrong with them
your gona pay 750$ For a Touch Pro 2, and you dont get a headphone jack?
WTF????
WTF???
WTF??
WTF?
and people buy this ****?
how bout try selling a laptop with no headphone jack too now
seriously HTC needs to be renamed to CRAP
these phones they release
are peices of **** and the only reason they sell
is cuz of their name.
I think i know now why most of the world is using Nokia
in all defense, HTC wasnt much better when they were audiovox or ut starcom
then again motorola's have stupid amounts of problems and design flaws yet people still stand in line to get them.
as for palm, i have had 3 of them now and there are always little quirks with them but over all i feel they are pretty solid, sprint has the treo pro set for like $199 after rebate and they raised the price of the touch diamond. I switched from a touch pro to a treo pro about a month ago and i couldnt be happier.
i do think palms marketing is really the key here. Also i would love an offical launch date from sprint about that damn palm pre that they have been building the hype of for like 3 months now its almost to a point where i dont have any intrest in it because of all the waiting

hey, same here i switch from the touch pro after 3 months of use, and.. i could NOT be happier seriously i have not even though of that touch pro for any reason except
sliding out the keyboard in and out when im bored... lol
other then that, .. i dont have hours and hours to test roms, install / reinstall apps to get my phone to do .. what the treo pro does already.
NOTE: To me, selling a 600+ dollar media / business device with a screen (getting close to that of an EeePC) without a headphone jack is litteraly like complete and utter bull****. I was so looking farward to the Touch Pro 2, but now i have no care for it at all.
I just bought a Treo Pro - Came from an HTC P4000 (Mogul) with a couple of Blackberries in between. I had to go back to WinMo because although BB's do what they do really well (communications) I was missing the ability to customize to my heart's content, and use more advanced apps.
I love the Treo Pro! I tried out the Touch Pro and didn't like it, I wanted the blackberry form factor, with hardware keys. I hated dialing on the screen on the Mogul. And the touch pro, is the same, unless you wanna slide out the keyboard to make a call..... PITA.
The compromise for having a front facing qwerty? Screen size.... you either have to have a very very long device to fit the keyboard below, or have a smaller screen. Some devices chose to go landscape like the HP 910c... but they actually faired out worse because they are 320x240. The Treo Pro is 320x320 and the screen is actually slightly larger. As for screen resolution... how many pixels do you really need to fit on a 2.5" screen anyway??? I don't see any pixelation on this at all! It looks very crisp and sharp!
As for popularity.... it's brand new here in Canada, and hasn't taken off yet, but I think it will. I have the CDMA version of the Treo Pro, which I think has a slightly faster processor and slightly more available memory. The OS is snappy, no lagging at all, and I love the form factor!! Psssssst, it fits in most iphone 3G cases too!
And coming from a long line of Windows Mobile / Pocket PC (even before phone edition), I think the whole WebOS thing is limiting, and overrated..... just my opinion about the Pre
I just switched from the htc touch pro to the treo pro ad I love it, I have the seidio extended battery 3500amh and the sennheiser m200 bluetooth headphones.I never run short of power, the best media and business phone so far.

How satisfied are u with X10?

i am planning to upgrade my X1 to X10...so i am on android platform
but also considering other android phones such as Milestone.
wanted to know how satisfied are u with X10 on a scale 1-10?
did u regret it at all? (unbiased answers pls)
Hows the performance compared to other phones in similar hardware class?
I have had a long list of handsets every single version of blackberry, iphone and this is my first android for about a week now and I'm really happy with it. It's a project phone to me, always finding new things with it and the apps and personalizing it are endless.
Quality of apps are not as great as the iphone but it's still a VERY new platform and getting better by the day.
Hardware wise I'm very impressed, very speedy, impressive camera quality and I'm pretty picky, 9/10 for form factor, could be rounded or something. Robust little device and I hope it's not outdated for at least 8 months.
looks 9/10
quality 8.9/10 - screen scratches easily, voice quality is great
hardware 9.9/10
overall I'd say 9.2/10 compare to an iphone of 8.9/10
i do like the phone a lot. with better software or onceroot is availible it will be worlds better.
camera is great wish it had a flash though. screen is great and big for typing.
not overly happy with battery life but after reading a few suggestions it is better.
once a firmware upgrade is out and an upgrade to a more recent version of android my mind might change more in favor of this device. right now it gets an 8 out of 10
Sent from my X10a using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
I have just upgraded from X1 to X10 and I'm very impressed with the device.
Major drawback is low volume during calls.
Pluses definitely outweigh the minuses and the snapdragon 1 GHZ is lightning quick.
My opinion is go for it, you won't be disappointed.
Don't forget we are on first gen firmware which can only improve.

Ha~~ You are ask in right place,
I'm also upgrade from X1 to X10
Android is better than WM = =", Even my X1 use custom rom and faster than stock rom a 300%, but WM still lag, still ....ooxx
And My colleague have MileStone, Nexus One, Hero
But all colleagues want to get X10 when they see my X10 and play it a lot
Milestone is best for Rooted use, but slower than X10
Nexus One also have the latest firmware, rooted etc..benefit but is this really important???
Hero... actually not the same grade
I want to said X1 to X10 you can feel much better improve, actually when you jump from WM to Android you can feel it
Milestone VS X10
Outlook: I guess X10 is better but MS not bad, but MS heavy
Phone Feature: MS win, better speaker, clear and loud, also the IM volume is clear and MS have CrystalVoice, X10 speaker low, and the most important is the IM volume is very low.... MW600 is your friend = ="
Stylus: X10 win, the custom of the X10 and UI, Userfriendly is X10, But MS also can improve by Apps
Performance: slower than X10
Nexus One VS X10
Outlook: I think 99% people said X10 win
Phone Feature: I think is draw, Nexus one have Noise Cancel, but in the real world this feature seem not really good as Milestone, and the volume same as X10 still low
Performance: Faster than X10
Conclusion:
My choice is X10, even I played the Milestone and Nexus one and hero also
X10 is a very union product, you can feel this is the Sony phone, not like the MS or Nexus one, just only a Android
When you use X10, you will see many place has been modified and make the stylus in one "Sony Stylus"
Even the outlook and the UI you can see this is the phone which not like just only buy some band, and then the outlook is like a soap and UI alway HTC = ="
The Better Video Play back and the best camera on Android "like DC"
If you want to play the PHONE, you use MS or Nexus One
If you want to show up, use the PHONE, then X10
HA... when I goto street and show off the X10, many people watch my Phone, wow... what is this phone?? the outlook is very good, big screen and slim
Stylus: Still same as MS, it can root and improve the UI from apps
I too upgraded from X1 to X10, the X10 does feel 10 times better than the X1 (hence the name..?)
The reason why I picked X10 is almost the same reason why I picked X1 last year; the looks and the hardware. X1 was quite a powerhouse when snapdragon wasn't available in the market. However as you and I'd agree, X1 isn't a dream machine as we thought. The lagginess and lack of supports from SE quickly turns me off.
Picking the xperia series phone again wasn't an easy decision for me, it feels like I'm going back into the SE trap again. But I reconsider because of the improvement offered in the X10, 1Ghz, big screen, android, and still has the sexy appeal. I have been watching the phone closely for a year ever since there were leaked information on the internet, and reviews after the phone was finally out and eventually, hold my breath and clicked 'Buy Now' on eBay.
X10 is just like the X1, it isnt as impressive as the spec look like. But the difference is its more impressive than the X1, just not as exciting as you might expect. X10 will still give you the 'lag' experience especially at the animations department. To a some people the laginess is unacceptable due to the fact there is a 1Ghz cpu in the house. To me who came from X1 is acceptable because I've seen the worse.
Also believe me or not android isnt as mature as the windows mobile. There are quite a few basic functions the android lacks like task manager etc, and the dialler feels weird (press power button to reject call...?).
So if you still havent made up your mind yet, this is the factors I think you should consider
-are u a physical keyboard person? (I am, but I do not mind virtual keyboard either, I'm currently typing really slow on the phone, and without physical keyboard, u cant do 'blind typing'. I used to type my messages walking on the street without looking at the screen)
-are u a 100% sucker of graphics and animation? sure timescape looks impressive, but not an essential. And u need good looking profile pics of ur friends frm ur Facebook or twitter account to make timescape looks good. Most of my Facebook splines are showing only my friend's nose and lips due to their profile pics, makes my whole timescape look like a joke.
-can you live with android 1.6 until Q4 2010? X10 is my 1st android phone and I have not had the privilege to played with 2.1. So I'm not spoiled from the comfort of 2.1.
-can you live with single touch screen?
-do you expect the phone to perform as fluid as iPhone? IMO I have not seen other phone which can perform better than the iPhone at the animation department (HTC's Sense is pretty close). I personally do not want an iphones cause I've got an ipod touch, apple's control freak, and too many people has it.
And finally my rating! 9/10
Sorry for the long post but I hope I helped, because I have gone through the same decision making ;D
how the hell do i delete a post?
Deleted. Double post

Obviously depends on what features you really care about regarding your mobile phone, but OVERALL I think HTC's Desire is hands down the best phone on the market right now. I firmly believe the X10 could be, but in all honesty it could be until November until its potential is fully realized--pending promised firmware and OS updates.
So if you want the best phone,
Right now--HTC Desire
This year--Evo 4G, Samsung Galaxy S, maybe X10!
Satisfaction -- 7/10 X10 Overall -- 8.5/10
Some regret yes -- high cost, questionable updates from SE, poor battery life
X10's performance is not up to N1 or Desire, but other features and potential is why I bought it.

Veeeeeery happy thank you !! From what I was using (P1) 10/10 (what doesnt have a couple of niggles anyway ??)
Very, 9.5/10
Pretty damn satisfied, 8.5/10 (but I'm very difficult to satisfy)
Pros: too many to list, it really is an awesome device.
Cons: while I understand SE's philosophy behind the slow software releases, it doesn't make up for how SLOW they are at releasing them: 6+ months for an update to be customised & tested by them is unacceptable for a top-end device. In all honesty I've found no major issues to WANT the software update, but there are enough to make it a desirable thing to happen.
But, overall, it's a damn nice looking device and it works very well.
I'll give it 8.5 from 10.
Battery life is fine after a week or so when you stop pushing the phone limits
I mean, is a smartphone with 1Gig CPU and 4" display... you can't expect the battery to last 4 days like a dumb phone
If you use the smartphone, 12h battery is super.
If you turn everything off and use the phone (but i don't see the point) you can get 2days or more.
Design + UI, 10/10...
I don't care much about mediascape but timescape does the job.
Call volume ... i have no idea i use MW600 100% and is loud enough.
1.6 vs. 2.1 ?
2.1 will be nice but 1.6 will do it.
I was waiting for Galaxy S until after reading hundred of posts about Samsung "upgrades" i gave up.
Yes, will have a better display and divx/xvid support but Samsung has a bad habit to put new phones on market instead of supporting their old models so, pretty much you are stuck with what you buy.
I came from X1
Don´t buy a X10. Take a HTC instead. I give 2/10. I hate my X10. Poor hardware. Bad integrated hardware buttons ( bad to handle ), sad USB ( on the left????) No MT, bad Battery, POOR earspeaker quality and not loud enough, NO Sence.
What i hate most:
The Dialer
The Phonebook
The Call Log
The "Back" Hardware Button. Bad to reach. Need always to keep atention the X10 is not falling out of my hand. Why 3 or 4 hardware buttons? what did Google think when they did Android???? I hate also the iphone BUT there you have everywhere a "back" tab.
Instead of building TS and MS, SE should make a better usable interface like HTC ( Dialer..../ Sense) and EVERYWHERE a "Back/Cancel" tab.
AND i cant stand with the "select text" method in Android. That is bull****. Why not make it like it is on every computer ( and WM): wipe with your finger and the long press on the selected text and choose between cut, copy.....
i am thinking to change my X10 to a HD2 BUT THIS has no trackball
the perfect phone has a Trackball/ DPAD and maybe(!) two (good to handle) hardware buttons: Dial and Dial end/cancel
but there is no such phone on the market....
of course thats just my opinion ( but there are only 2: my opinion and the wrong opinion )
the last 4 weeks i made a list what i love on my X10 and what i hate: 2 things i love, 43 i hate. The list is a 17(!!!!) pages long word document and every page is FULL. The list took me about 50-70 hours, NO CHOKE!!!! I would post it here but its in german and to translate it would cost me again lots of hours.....
Best phone I have ever owned and I have owned the following phones in the last year:
iphone 3G
HTC Magic
HTC Hero
Nokia N900
People talk about lag but I have seen none. Best battery life of the bunch, too.

iphone 3G - i understand THAT!!!
HTC Magic - ? i think its much better than the X10
HTC Hero - ? i think its much better than the X10
Nokia N900 - i dont know this phone
I'm happy with it I went form the X1 to the X10 and have been a Windows Mobile fan for years. It's taking some getting used to but i'm getting there.
Battery life was a pain until I disabled Timescape and several other services.
well i would say i was very frustrating, waited for so long since the phone advertise, here in DUBAI we don't have marketplace inside the package but you can see the box there is marketplace icon weird!!!!!!!!!!!... the only thing that you can enjoy your android is to get some useful apps in the marketplace.... yet there is a word "debranding"and some of frnds manage to debrand there androids in UK version and they have this apps could MARKETPLACE..... but i want my phone to be a virgin as new with out debranding it!!!
rate 5 out of 10....
i only miss multitouch as i upgraded from hd2 which has very good multitouch ,i now returned to hd2 as my primary phone ,as i also hate android 1.6 i give it (4 out of 10) and hd2 (8 out of 10 )
My previous phone was iphone 3G, but with android phone I´m very satisfied!
Look 9/10
Functions 8/10 (missing camera flash, and divx support and a little MT)
Overall 8,5/10
Cons: low call volume (but I have MW600 and with it its great), for that price X10 can have stereo speakers, speed of releasing future updates (hope that SE will release updates faster... 2.1 in Q4 2010 wtf ??!)

Xperia X10 better than iphone 4?

Root is hard than bricking the iphone. (does it mean a better security from SE)
The rest people know...
If you post this kind of topics in a XDA X10 specific forum, you should see what are the replies coming ...
As much as i don't like general Apple marketing strategy, i am not that cocky as many other WM and Android users that will surely tell you things like... Android rules!!!!! Get your iWhatever and go play with your useless toy!!! YEAHH!!!
In the end, i think each platform is targeted to a whole different market. Hard to say X is better than Y... it depends much on the point of view you compare from...
Agree!!!!
Iphone is for lemmings
WM and BlackBerry is for Business People
Android is for moders, hackers, people that like to be unique
Symbian is still out there but sadly its dying slowly
Moved is too short!
iPhone = users that are new to smartphones.. it's simple, easy to use and no customization involved other than changing wallpaper. Turn it on and you're ready to go.
Windows Mobile: A lot of features.. so many features which makes it hard to use or in other words, need to spend more time to get used to it.
Blackberry: Business users
Android: A bit of both of iPhone OS and Windows Mobile. It's easier to use than Windows Mobile but have the features which allows a lot of customization. I would say it's a hybrid.
I got both. The Iphone 4 16GB and the X10i. I have to say that both are awesome in design, usage and speed. But I love the X10 more because of the known reasons: modding, not every kid got one, Sony and 1 or 2 more.
But as we all know: savours differ.

I don't know if it's a fair question. From what I see, there's no perfect phone on the market. Everyone has their own use cases and some devices will be a better fit for some people than others. I think you'll find that both devices are excellent smartphones regardless of what you choose.
Ultimately, you have to make the decision for yourself of what is a better fit for you. The best thing you can do is make a list of your own requirements of what you expect from your phone in terms of actual usage scenarios and then map that against the features of any particular phone.
In cases like the USA, the iPhone 4, while awesome, is less attractive because you can only use it to its full potential on a crappy network that now has limited data plans (AT&T).
I don't even consider the two products in the same category since they have such different end-to-end experiences. The original poster may want to describe in a phone so people can offer more helpful customized responses.
I don't believe in iPhone anymore (also I own MacBook and previous owner for the iPhone)
Please take your time in reading the below articles about the new iPhone and give me your feedback

I'm a real Sony fan but I just got the iPhone 4 and I can tell you now the iPhone 4 blows the x10 out of The water. the battery life is stellar, Tue camera is way better for the average user, the camera is quicker, hd video recording is flawless. The iPhone 4 games are just brilliant, there is nothing sluggish in the iPhone 4s software. The x10 has way more issues than the iPhone 4. The whole antenna thing has been blown way out of proportion and there are no yellow screen issues on mine. The only thing I miss are the widgets and the Google integration. If SE sort Tue problems out real quick then I will go back to the x10 as I love the hardware, but until that day comes The iPhone 4 wins.

Hang on, you say the iPhone 4 is divine in it's epicness yet you still will return to the X10 once some minor bugs that are already fixed are sorted? Yikes.
For me as a developer the iPhone isn't even a choice atm, releasing software for it is akin to trying to develop blindfolded and deaf. You can't ask others for help, you can't read up on the requirements for distributing your apps etc.
I used to be an iPhone developer but I went to the better platform for good a while back. It may be "slicker" for the average user but for me as an information political activist and developer it's a defínite no go.
yep I'm a Sony fanboy at heart, my house is full of Sony gear!
I'm just not that die-hard that I have to stick with the x10i until generic firmwares, 2.1 etc is out, and am pretty annoyed at how se smartphone users get ignored, and also where's he promised Psn integration on all newest phones 2010 onwards. Sent from my iPhone 4

Just my 2 cents... Sony Ericsson =/= Sony
I think most of the stuff at SE is directed more by Ericsson whereas Sony just licenses some media features like walkman brand etc.

That's pretty much it. Ericsson has been making phones for 30+ years, it was just recently that they were bought by Sony and started tacking on the walkman bits. The phone department is just Sony by name or association, it's all Ericsson.
Posted some pics in the comparison thread. Check them out.
The iPhone always leaves something to be desired. It's such a great platform but there are tiny quirks that make it unbareable to use. The limitations that Apple imposes angers me to no end!!
The iPhone is a phone that could ALMOST rock the mobile market but it doesnt. That's why I moved to using Android phones. There are less limitations and much more freedom. There isn't as much support or popularity but the communities online are much more tighter knit and there are far less idiots and fan boys. I love everything about Android

Enjoy your iPhone 4 that can't use widget, can't use the phone as an external harddrive, can't use it as a real web browsing device because it doesn't have flash, can't decide over you own phone because Apple have to decide what's best and not so good for you.
Oh also, have you seen this?: http://theiphonefever.blogspot.com/p/idont-list.html. Again, enjoy your iPhone 4 lol.
Now, you say you can get much more batterytime with the iPhone 4 over the XPERIA X10?. Ok, tell me how many hours you can get out of the iPhone 4 before it's out of power?.
I know even before you tell me this that my XPERIA X10 just blows your iPhone 4 out of the water in battery time.
And when your gonna use the phone as a web browsing device, for GPS, and to watch movies then 4 inch screen -> 3.5 inch screen any days.
Oh i heard your pictures that your transfering over via iTunes looks just beautifull lol. Try and zoon in on your pictures after they are moved over to your iPhone 4 via iTunes.
Isn't that cool?.
Now tell me something iPhone 4 have that my Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 doesn't have?.

XPERIA X1 is still a great phone!

Just switched to a Samsung Galaxy S. My conclusion:
- Exchange Sync and Android sucks, while email is ok, calendar sync is buggy
- Battery!!! I got 2-3 days with my Xperia and 2/3 day (LESS THAN ONE) on the SGS
- The Xperia can't do all the fancy android stuff. The SGS can't either because the battery is empty ...
- Xperia is robust! Hard to damage!
- WiMo may not be fast, but android also laggs sometimes
- WiMo is more intuitive for me (as a PC user)
Xperia X1 sure is a great phone, I enjoy mine very much. However, if I could have Xperia's guts in my Universal....
I abolutely agree. There aren't many phones out there I would trade for my X1. Maybe the LG Expo but it's hardly available. The HD 2 surely is a great phone too but without a hw keyboard it disqualifies itself for me.
Im still very pleased to realise day and day again how much can be accomplished with the X1. Especially when you take into consideration that the Xperia X1 have been sold for almost 2 years now.
i love my xperia
and if you want all the fancy android stuff, well then wait a while, android is making great progress!
best of both worlds if you ask me!
I loved my Xperia as well (if it weren't for my constant flex ribbon issue I would still love it). I gotta say the FROYO port to the X1 worked extremely well, even used turn by turn navigation with no problems at all. Sad that HTC Sense version of the Xperia is no longer continued. Hint, hint Jonny4911 I definitely like having multiple operating systems on the phone in addition to having a cool wow form factor of the Xperia. While it was still working, people would still ask me "what phone is that?!"
I think so.....
Two words that really prevent this phone from being the best I've owned and cannot be ignored in my opinion:
Quality issues
Definitely X1 earned to be one of the best Smarties ever.
Honestly I still keep this if something irreversible will happen to my X2.
X2 could be actually X1 improved, but the software mess they made prevented this.
Pity.
The thing is I really admire SE smartphone concepts.
Hopefully WP7 device will be also great....
That's interesting cos I was actually thinking I should go for the Galaxy S. I still love my Xperia and only yesterday a very pretty girl asked me what it was
Hehe, it even gets you chicks!!!
I love my XPERIA X1 TOO (than my X2 and Milestone). Besides of X1's most ellegance mode of my other phones, because it is a present from my dad.
X2 really has a big trouble in its software. It often get lag after a phone call. Why SE make a downgrade of X1 Gosh?!?
Because the review and commercial in my country rate Galaxy S as 4.5 stars , I plan to replace my buggy Milestone to Galaxy S this morning but it's not available yet till next two weeks in my town (In Indonesia, Galaxy S is just about to b launched).

Happened to me occasionally too. It was great while it lasted. I used that phone until it literally fell apart.
I'm currently using the captivate (ATT galaxy S). It's a good upgrade imo. Not quite as elegant but it has impressed just as many people (including me) as my xperia did.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I love to see how people amazed when they see my X1 with Android in it haha.. and they really loved it.. Though they still prefer the smooth scrolling of Iphone.. My phone beats that with multi-user interface
WM 6.1, 6.5, HTC Sense, PointUI roms are already that much.. Almost every few days I'll change my rom LOL.. Let's hope Android sets it foot into becoming a rom for our X1

I've been using this phone almost a year now and all the things i need to a person to be mobility and flexible is with this phone. I can used it with my work, traveling, exercise, gaming and even sound tripping. As of now, i haven't found any phone that could replace it.

Totally agree with you man. It's frustrating that with such a great phone we have to be hit hard by quality issues. From cracks to keyboard problems to ribbon issues. It's a shame really.
SE could have almost made a near perfect phone, but they washed it down the drain with quality issues. They hit it spot on with the form factor, the design (sexiest phone I've seen, even till today), the hardware buttons (on which modern phone can you find this amount of hardware buttons even if you exclude the keyboard?), the collaboration with HTC, the OS (WM is still great and will still be great for years to come).
So many thing went so right, but just 1 issue flushed it down the drain. Sigh.
on the middle of 2011 some one wanted to say that he likes and loves his X1 still but will be 100% satisfied if it's more slim!!
The X1 hardware is great, but WinMo really does suck, the only thing it has over iOS and Android is an offline version of Garmin gps software.
I just got an Evo 3D and so far I'm much happier with it than I was with the Xperia for the past year.
the x1 is a greatphone, the standard software wm 6.1 sucks a little bit but there is so much software to tune it up.
