Hi,
I've got a really strange issue where if I have iTunes running and dock my HTC Touch, Windows Mobile Device Center will report this as "Error" every time I connect it.
I can exit iTunes and then the device upon re-docking will work ok.
Has anyone else come across this? I am guessing that the ipod software is polling all the USB ports, and when this connects it may be causing the connection to WMDC to drop and that is what is reflected by that error?
I've put up with this for months - and only just worked out that if I don't run iTunes then it will connect!
Any ideas?
Update
Well, it has taken a while to try a few different things...
I have set up Bluetooth on my PC, and after a day of mucking around with it, finally it just "came good" and I could sync fine.
Then disconnect Bluetooth, and reconnect to sync - WMDC shows the "Connecting" then "Error" message as it did with the USB cable.
Inspecting the error logs it has reported this:
Windows Mobile-based device failed to connect due to communication (0x80072745) failure.
This is also the same error given on USB when it starts to connect, and then displays "Error" in WMDC.
Disconnecting the HTC Touch and reconnecting it (either through USB or Bluetooth) a few times it will just "come good" with no logical explaination behind it.
I've checked and even disabled the firewall, and it is still intermittent with the same error.
I thought I had narrowed it down with iTunes, but I don't think that is the cause.
The network adaptor is showing up in Device manager fine.
Does anyone else have any ideas for troubleshooting?

OK, this has been working all week and suddenly yesterday, it seems that I could no longer connect to my Exchange server. When I try (from Pocket Outlook) it says "Connecting" and never connects. When I try from ActiveSync, it just sits there saying "Synchronising" and never does. Although I can certainly still see Exchange through the web mail feature and on my desktop PC. Anyone encountered a similar problem? Did it lie with the server or the client? It seems odd as there's nothing that I did between it last working and it not working. Since then, I've tried removing the ES from Activesync and readding it and rebooting the server. :?
I have been having similar problems. Sometimes it synchronises well, other times I get error messages. It seems to have nothing to do with whether the telephone reception has lots of bars, and it seems to work with G rather than U.
If you're using "SSL workaround" (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;817379), and have multiple network cards, you must allow access to Exchange-OMA virtual directory from both/all IP addresses. This fixed similar problem on my side!
If this is when using your USB cable to connect to your pc to connect to the network, i had a similar problem, all AS 4.1 would do is say 'connecting'
I resolved it by removing the USB cable from the exec, removing AS, rebooting, reinstalling AS, rebooting, wait for AS to start then turn on the exec and connect via USB cable.
I had a similar problem a few days later that i was able to resolve by rebooting my PC with the exec disconnected, waiting for AS to start before reconnecting the switched on device.

After upgrading to ATT WM6, I am receiving a USB device not recognized more often than not when I try to sync via Activesync. I tried resetting, restarting the phone and/or computer. Advanced network option on phone USB to PC connection is off. Any ideas? Thanks.
WM6 & Firewall
When I upgraded - my firewall was not happy anymore. Try killing your firewall, deleting any previous settings in your sync center for the device, than reconnect it.
Still problems with USB, Activesync 4.5 and WIN XP
I reinstalled usb drivers, activesync, and reset the phone but no dice getting the computer to recognize the phone. It will briefly but activesync never gets rolling before it drops.
Im currently having an issue where I plug my phone into USB on its cradle, and it connects ok, but after about 30-60 seconds it disconnects and reconnects. Very annoying.
However, BEFORE I got to THIS point, when I plugged my phone into USB from a hard reset (actually a replacement phone) it would just say a USB device has malfunctioned and has not been recognised, or something like that. I finally got round it by disabling the advanced usb networking functionality as you said you tried - but I noted that it only actually worked after a hard reBOOT. i.e. after switching OFF advanced networking, the effect of doing so didn't become apparent until I had rebooted the phone - at this point it recognised it, installed the drivers and Vista Windows Update went and upgraded all the drivers.
Now I just cant get it to stay connected for more than 30 seconds or so :/
Hard reset did the trick.
Thanks for that pearl.
Hi,
If anyone experiences the irritating problem with activesync that after being cradled and uncradled a few times refuses to connect. This has been a problem on 4 different PCs since 08/2008
The only way to solve this normally would be to restart both the PPC and the PC, I've found that if you run services.msc after receiving the "Active sync cannot connect to the mobile device" error message, you will notice that the DHCP service has stopped (I dunno why) restart it, close Activesync on the PPC and recradle, Voila! It now connects perfectly.
Hopefully this will help anyone with a similar and equally irritating problem!
Hi All
I searched the Forum but couldn't find a solution to this problem.
1. Came back form holiday yesterday - synced up my HD" with Outlook no problem
2. Tried to do it this morning. By the normal 'connect PC' option didn't come up and activsync icon didn'tr light up on PC
3. Rebooted HD2 and PC..no change
4. Tried to repair/reinstall activ sync, but towards the end of the repair it says 'there was a network error reading from file 'setup/msi'. Guessing that the file may be corrupt, I downloaded it again..same problem..so I can't repair or reinstall
5. There is definitely a connection of some sort as the HD2 begins to charge when connected
Bottom line is that the HD2 is not syncing - and I can't figure out why not.
Any advice appreciated...
Thanks
Do you have a Norton (Symantec) firewall installed? I’ve found that the Norton product can interfere with ActiveSync.
Active Sync not working
Good point..but no. I have AVG installed (and everything was working OK yesterday)
Spooky thing is, I have managed to uninstal, reinstal and reboot..and it still won't show that it's connected with AS even though there is a connection of some kind, cos the device is charging.
Steve
ActiveSync is just a bit crap. It'll do this occassionaly, so if you use it a lot then get used to it.
A restart of the phone, whilst the USB cable is not plugged in, usually does the trick. Only plug it in again when it's fully started.
Also, try setting the AS connection to not allow USB connections, unplugging and plugging back in, and then setting it to once again allow USB connections.
Just messing with it like that usually works for me. Like I said, it's just a bit crap.
Activ Sync
Yeah, I seem to recall I had this problem a while back - I'll faff around with the settings and see if it makes a difference

Well if johncmolyneux's suggestions don't work then try disconnecting your phone from the PC, restarting both, disconnecting the PC from the network, disabling the firewall element of AVG (if it has one) and then connecting the phone to the PC again.
If that doesn't work I can only suggest removing ActiveSync, totally shutting down your PC, starting up, then re-installing ActiveSync.
I had a similar problem but I was able to narrow it down to Norton in the end but it's a real pain when you don't know why it won't work.
Good luck with this.
I also occasionally was not able to connect with Active Sync, but rebooting the HD2 always fixes that issue. You said that this did not helped you, so try messing with the settings on Active Sync, like johncmolyneux said, also try when plug the usb cable into the device by default it asks you what kind of connection you're establishing (Active sync, data transfer and internet sharing) - try using data transfer, if it connects, unplug and connect it again, this time use active sync.
Reinstall activsync and Try to disable faster data Synchonization on HD2
Active Sync not working (solved)
That'll teach me to not check the obvious! - It turned out that the cable had developed a fault. I changed the cable and it's now OK.
Case closed.

My ActiveSync won't Sync
I found with "Enable faster data synchronization check box" ON then doesn't even start ActiveSync on PC. Instead the LAN icon starts searching for an IP.
if OFF then it tries then ActiveSync says ERROR code 85010001
this page
http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/activesync/exchange_errors.php
says An invalid HTTP communication or protocol syntax occurred.
reboot doesn't help.
Are you sync to Exchange of PC files?
if Exchange, try turn off push update, sync, and turn it back on.
sounds like it's stuck in modem mode or something.. have you tried switching between modes? e.g. put it in modem mode and disk drive and then activesync again..
no Exchange
turned off all except contact/calendar
tried disk drive and then activesync but no good
then tried turning bluetooth off and it worked with with "Enable faster data synchronization check box" off
so still not perfect
The more complex, the more can go wrong. Recently my HD2 has not been running activesync on connection. It is a problem after I have hibernated my PC, but also randomly at other times after a disconnect and reconnect.
Following hte advice above I've tried the change to modem, change to disk and back to activesync, but that did not help. Unchecking the "Enable faster data synchronization check box" has now allowed it to connect.
While activesync was unable to connect, I could still connect using a brilliant little program, sadly not recently updated, called mymobiler. That lets me control the HD2 from my PC< and do screen dumps as well. So how come that would connect but MS Activesync would not? And it was not a new install, I've had that since my first few days of the HD2 and worked well until the last couple of weeks, when this issue has become increasingly annoying.
While activesync was telling me I was disconnected, in the Windows 7 Devices and Printers there was an icon for a "Generic RNDIS" but nothing else about it. When on the HD2 I go back into USB to PC and check the tickbox for "Enable faster data synchronization" that icon reappears. Maybe disabling then enabling this check box has sorted it. Time will tell.
Hmmm...
It is not a new issue with activesync and htc phones. This thread is a year old.
In fact a search of hte web shows htis is common across several makes of phone.
Damn. When I installed HTC's latest hotfix for SMS, it soft reset the HD2.
On restart, the HD2 was not recognised by the PC, but it does show in Devices and Printers as the generic RBIS. So; uncheck the "Enable faster data synchronization" and it appears on the PC as a Generic Serial device, then becomes a live device in the Mobile Device Centre. I guess we won't be using faster then.
What I don;'t understand is why both of the showings in the Devices and Printers are Generic. Surely there is a driver?
argh, now it's broken again, had BT on...
htc has no clue and suggests (again) that I just keep creating a new partnership each time I have this issue (daily)
Are you sync'ing to an external exchaneg server as well as locally?
I had an issue with mine that the external exchange and local seemed to clash some how, I deleted the external and all internal connections from the phone's active sync screen and then the local PCwas able to re sync, then added each of the other conections and made sure that there where no contradictions in the syncing rules?
Maybe not your issue but worth mentioning!

I regret this is incomprehensible. "nowt" means nothing, so you are saying that nothing is broken again. That would be good, not bad. Your post then stops part way through and concludes negatively against HTC, though for no reason whatsoever. Please could you repost with something that makes sense?
I have no exchange servers, just local PC,
but all errors are exchange related, so HTC say.
if you dont have an exchange server then remove it completely ftom the list of sync locations (i cant remember how you do this, but its the same screen where you select what you want to sync). ive found that if it isnt being recognised that removing the phone from device manager list in windows (deleting drivers/software if asked) and reconnecting the phone seems to work. i have my driver install set to use windows update to locate drivers so try this as well
HD2 won't activesync via bluetooth
My LEO do sync properly via USB. Not connect absolutely via BT.
my setting is :
internal GPS connect via COM4 to TomTom7, VisualGPSce, TutorAssist
and seems to be:
bluetooth port IN is COM1
bluetooth port OUT is COM2
In my Notebook the lonely Local port is COM5. No other one is available
ActiveSync Bluetooth connection is set on COM5
So i know this thread is way old but figured id give it a try. The screen cracked on my TP2 and I cant get WMDC to recognize my device to pull the data. I'm pretty sure that enable faster data synchronization is checked and my screens broken so i can't fix that. Is there another way I can access the phone? Any help is appreciated ty.
