stupid question about screen: hd vs iphone - Touch HD General

sorry for the "stupid" question, but I don't have an hd and I'd like to understand if the screen (not resolution) has been changed from my previous devices (kaiser, diamond...)
I switched to iphone after some years with wm devices and, to be honest, I must admit that I've never seen a screen like that (in terms of interaction).
BUT... I miss my wm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Since I can see a really big screen, HOW is this screen?
Is the same of the previous devices (you need same strenght to click... etc...) or is something new?
Thanks in advance!!!

I know EXACTLY how you feel!!! I struggled with the VERY SAME thing to the point that I started a "Can we port WinMo to the iphone hardware" thread, and basically got laughed at I'll apologize I can't answer your question, as my new HD won't be here till tomorrow afternoon. Good luck!

HD has the best sensitivity in an HTC device to date.

It's more sensitive than other devices (I had TyTnII before) and you can tweak the sensitivity.
It's not quite the iPhone experience, but it is very very close.

I know what you mean, I have a Samsung F480 and its screen is a dream. I am not yet owning an HD but want to see it live as soon as possible to see how the well praised screen is.
There are two WM phones from Asus coming out, which are said to have a capacitive screen but this is not confirmed yet .... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=446317

how do you tweak the sensitivity on the hd?

You should be able to do so with Schap's Advanced Config. Version 3.3 is out, which adds TF3D configurability, but not sure it's been certified with the HD...

HTC HD video

I don't know if anyone else have this video posted but take a look.
It is actually a good review - touchflo seems to have come on leaps and bounds which is still not evident on the diamond (inspite of the fact it has the same processor - more mem perhaps?).
The woman narrating did a decent job except she did make me laugh a few times unintentionally (she got a little too excited about the size of the screen )... Looking at the size of the device though - it is actually pretty big! The Samsung looks to be the optimal size for a smartphone... The HTC screen is superb though

WOW! Very nice video indeed!
My Touch Pro´s TF3D is _almost_ as snappy as that one. Not much difference, hardly noticeable...
another nice video
this is the www.pda.pl video of the HD in HD!!!

Gawd damn it!
That looks good, that is very smooth and very nicely proportioned!
lets answer this battery question and get the phone on the shelves to be sold.

The french accent.
I'm french and I prefer the original version with the man who hold the touch HD.
the one from vimeo is mind blowing... seems like htc finally decided to make their devices useful and finger-friendly.. touchflo works as it should ever had to.. simply can't wait!

I'm English and a woman speaking French (or English with a French accent) does wonders for me!
After watching the latest video and esp. seeing TouchFlo performance and that it is not that much bigger than the Diamond I am edging towards the Blackstone over the Xperia X1 (probably be out before the Sony anyway).
Can anyone remember how long the Diamond took to reach the carriers after the official launch? Seeing as the Blackstone is launching on Nov 6th and Orange are more than likely to stock it I am just trying to figure out a timeline....

Problem i see with the X1 is it has a higher res display on virtually the same size screen as the Touch Pro making text even smaller. Now the Touch HD has a much larger screen and higher res thant he X1.
I have one on pre-order and no Windows Mobile device has excited me like this one, it looks fantastic, latest is it should be hitting early November, cannot wait for you guys to start making it work so much better as usual.

Are you kidding??
A-GPS is GPS!!! Its the normal GPS just enhanced by the ability to download sattelite position information over the net, which makes it much faster then the normal GPS. A stands for assisted. So it's calles A-GPS. Theres no reason you would want the "old" GPS.
Raziel1 is spot on AGPS has all the features of GPS with the additional feature of a quick fix using sat positions that can be downloaded OTA so is superior to GPS. The Touch HD will have AGPS

It's fine as long as you can turn the a- off.
Here in Australia the cost of the net assistance is way beyond the value of it, so I only want the "old" GPS.

Blackstone VS Universal

i now many universal owners found that the HTC HD will be their new replacement for their old universal (me too) and i was wondering which realy has a better CPU since we already have intel PXA270 624Mhz on universal after clocking but i dont know weather the Qualcomm MSM7201A will have a potential to over clock it to at least the same extent?
i also hate that the HD has no hardkeys or joypad which is real helppfull in many games!!
so guys any cons or pros between the 2 will be realy benefitial?(i think i wrote it right).

I am not an expert in processors but if you read here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2742307#post2742307
Maybe your question can be solved.
About HD vs. Universal I think the only 2 bad points on where HD is not the winner are:
1. NO KEYBOARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2. Too similar to iphoney..........
I dream with HTC HD with a very nice slim and well designed physical keyboard!!!
That would be an ultimate device and the ONLY real succesor for our fantastic Uni

I agree with you,in addition I have concerns about the manufacture quality of the screen which seems to be similar to that of diamond and the touch pro which with time sites of increase pressure would have reduce sensitivity and I didn't understood this phrase "it become oil point"?

Yes the quality of the screen does not looks very nice, too shinny I think.
I can imagine if I am trying to read a mail on HD with some bright light on my back I´m sure I wont be able to see a s....t on the screen
Hope I am wrong, I am thinking seriously to wait a little bit to see if HD makes a keyboard model, instead of running to buy the HD.
I am not tired about my Uni but we have to be honest, it feels nice to buy a new device! and I haven´t made that since Aug 05 when I got my Uni.
I wouldn't hold my breath for a keyboard HD anytime soon. The Pro is there and there seems to be a smaller market for the Pro than for the Diamond for example. Besides that, plans for the Pro were well known before the Diamond was even released, and the HD is just around the corner and there isn't even the slightest rumor of a keyboard HD, afaik.

wait, let me get this straight...are you saying what I think you're saying?
That the screens of the devices like Diamond and HD will lose it's functionality after a while???
Diamond wasn't released that long ago and people are already saying that the screen is losing its functionality after just, what, 2 or 3 months?
This can't be true...

That post was not exclusive to Diamond (including Pro) and HD devices. From what I understood, what he's saying is that all pressure sensitive screens are susceptible to wear over a period of time, and I quote: "(not immediately, but over time it loses its accuracy/sensitivity)"
So it could happen to Kaiser, Universal, Hermes, well, just about any other pressure sensitive touch screen devices.
I believe that's possible but it would take quite a while before the screen loses it's functionability.
When I initially read your post, it gave me quite a scare. I thought that this was a problem exclusive to Diamond and HD. lol

Agree meckah
I have my Universal since Aug 05 as my main PDA/Phone and I don´t feel any accuracy/sensitivity loss at all.
So I´m going for HD with no doubt!
Well if you took good care of the phone you wouldn't notice the difference even if it were there. It is only very, very minor loss of accuracy/sensitivity and it would occur so gradually it's hardly noticeable unless holding it next to a new version of the same phone.
The problem: the Diamond and its siblings invite for heavy finger pressure since they respond better to sharp objects such as a nail or a stylus. This is because the finger itself spreads the pressure over such a big area that the screen will not respond, while you are still applying a lot of net pressure to it. This may cause the screen on the Diamond, or the Pro, or the HD to damage much faster than older PDA screens which were only controlled with a stylus.
I use a stylus rather often on my Diamond since it many winmo features are so small it's hard to use a finger.
Now, early HD beta owners specifically pointed out that the HD seems to feel more responsive (see the French vid on youtube as well), making it more finger friendly.
This brings yet another issue: The Touch HD is a screen which appeals much more to finger gesture control than stylus control. Since the PPI is slightly lower than that of the Diamond all winmo user interface elements will be bigger, they can more easily be controlled using a fingertip. Also, it will be easier to depress and thus bend the screen since it is much bigger than that of the Diamond. If the screen isn't more sensitive than its siblings, the HD will be more likely to show oil patch and decreased sensitivity problems than the Diamond and the Pro.

Good explanation.
So it seems that if HD is more sensitive, then it also means that the screen will wear off quicker? I guess we'll never know until the phone comes out and people start using it....but the answer to this question might have a great impact on my decision of whether to buy the phone or not.
I have a Kaiser...Diamond never really impressed me with the 2.8screen, I marked the HD as my next device, but I'm hearing a lot of doubts about this phone even before it's released.
Going back on the thread subject
I insist, what are the options on having a new model in a few months based on HD with keyboard?
Or any succesor that you can think for the Universal? (No G1!!!)
How about the only disadvantage I can see on the HD? KEYBOARD
How easy is going to type on HD comparing to the beautyfull and usefull kb of Uni?
For me,
HTC Universal is the first big VGA PDA Phone about 2 years ago. It succeeded the big non VGA BlueAngel.
It was follow by next big VGA PDA Phone about a year back, O2 XDA Flame.
Now of course, HTC Touch HD will be the next big VGA PDA Phone.
I've been using the Universal since August 2005 and I'm still using it and I'm very satisfied with it. However after 3 years I would like something new...
However, the thing I use most of all is Terminal Services/Remote Desktop/LogMeIn.com.
The problem is that when I maximize this to full screen I won't be able to use a good Virtual Keyboard anymore. So I really need a hardware keyboard. I'm afraid I'll have to go with the Touch PRO or stick with the Universal if HTC doesn't release a HD with keyboard.
And I'm not about to carry around a seperate keyboard with me.

X1 vs Touch HD

I'm nearly at the end of my contract for my T-mobile vario II. It looks like my next phone will either be the X1 or the touch HD. I read a lot of ebooks and web pages so the bigger screen is going to be great.
I like the fact that the X1 has a slide out keyboard and dpad. These should help when writing emails or playing games. However the simpler package of the Touch HD does look very nice.
One thing that sucked about the vario II was the sluggish interface - from the few videos I have watched the HD seems a bit slicker than the X1 - am I right?
If possible I would like to install android on my next device - is this more likely to be possible on the HD?
So what are your views - which is better?
Mercedes or BMW.
Two similar but quite different animals.
Need the keyboard... X1
Need no keyboard .. T' HD
It's simply a choice only. Some point or other.. a HardSPL and cooking of roms will be well underway.. along with a vast choice of rom shape and size, along with inbuilts. The only thing that will not change is the Hardware shape. (guts are the same)
The Touch HD is not even out properly, and the HD manilla is already available and installable on the X1. the Sony panels will no doubt hit the Touch HD.
I have bought 2 X1's..along with an Omnia... Will get a HD also.. but this is because i'm a picky sod.. and have money to pee away.
Please don't tell my wife!.
Well the Touch HD is technically using HTC's "2nd" version of TouchFlo3D, after Diamond/TPro, so understandably they've put some effort into getting it to run more smoothly. SE's panels will debut on the X1 so it's probably buggy just like TouchFlo3D was when the Diamond first came out.
That said, XDA got even the stock Diamond interface running really well, so there's no reason they can't do it with the X1's panels. It's not a question of if but when.
I think if you're going to reading most of the time, the HD will be the better choice (bigger screen, and you dont "need" a hardware keyboard to read). But I must say if you do a fair amount of messaging, a real keyboard is second to none -- there's just no going back after you've used one (imo).
As for Android, only time will tell. My guess is yes for both, but it might not be fully functional for some time. There are just too many unknowns right now for there to be an easy answer.

If you are so flush with cash feel free to mail me one of the X1's!
fhseih - I do read a lot and the physical size of the screen on the touch hd would be very nice for that. However the actual resolution of the X1 is the same so it should be almost as good in that respect. As you say, once you get used to the keyboard you never go back. I have got used to having a keyboard on my vario II. I love the way that you can type without wasting screen space on a virtual keyboard.
Maybe what I really want is a Touch HD Pro - any rumors that we will see one of these soon?

Even though i have capital... and enough to buy a handset i want when i want it on the network i choose to be with.. i am certainly no charity.. so i'm sorry.. if the second x1 goes anywhere its back to supplier... and get a HD instead.
I think getting a Touch HD pro is pointless.. HD is such because its not bulky. Its slim and basically a screen with a send and end key.
Adding a keyboard to it = not a Touch HD Pro but a X1.
Lack of G-sensor on X1 is the thing i think when it comes to using different roms and software. Hardware apart from this and keyb is the same. (except screen size...res is the same)
I think... i will keep one x1 and get a HD...
that way.. i'm covered.
Really wish the DX900 Glofiish had been released... 2 sim cards... one phone with VGA/GPS/WIFI/Bluetooth/3G/HSDPA .. but as yet.. its just due... due .. and due....

This isn't the new HD though, so maybe the HD is still going to be strong for a year(meaning no major updates to it, just internal hardware, like a US 3G antenna).
I dont think we will see an upgrade for the HD till later this year (if at all) but this in most peoples eyes will easily do for a HD with built in keyboard.

That new TPro is still sexy though , but they could have done with out the bezel and all the brushed aluminum(not saying that I don't like).
*sigh* it makes me confused to make a decision between Touch HD and Touch Pro2
Touch Pro2 contains lots of software impovements, espsecially a newer version TF3D,
however, the backplate which coloured in grey really... ugly ('cause I'm a grey-hater)
the Touch HD have a stylish design (in my opinion), but software are just out-dated
and there maybe not have any WM6.5 offical ROM provided, even an update of TF3D
Anyone can help me to make a choice?
My only concern is about the updating of software and any alternative colours of Touch Pro2

The Touch Pro 2 is just too heavy for me, the HD is bad enough...same old story, to keyboard or not to keyboard. The WhiteStone is supposed to be the replacement for the HD. Who knows when it will come. Personally I don't care to upgrade my HD because with these new devices come new roms, YES!

i fully believe that the new TouchFLO will be available to the HD thanks to XDA-DEVELOPERS
and i can't wait, it seems to have some nice additions and tweaks
o and WinMo 6.5 will definitely be available for the HD thanks to XDA-DEVELOPERS (not an official upgrade, but fully awesome)
not impressed
I'm not impressed, i have had three HTC Phones and all have been underpowered due lack of chipset drivers, I will be probably looking towards the omnia HD next, unless HTC decide to shell out the cash for licences for drivers. it winds me up no end that. made I was fooled yet again by HTC into buying one of their half finished handsets.
Its good more XVGA's are coming out as it means more supported apps. Maybe a google version might help us crack the RGB666 issue.
Hardware Keyboard
I sincerely beleive that the HD (aka beast, aka black stone) is currently the ultimate device. Most people who long for a hardware keyboard must have never used the TouchPal. I have done continuous testing and TouchPal allows me and most other people to type considerable faster. I DO RECCOMEND IT for anyone who has not tried it.
I love what I'm seeing with the new ROMs out there and I'm not worried at all that the brilliant minds of this community will bring it to the world best device. Heck, after WM 6.1 was ported to the BlueAngel than everything is possible here!
I love my HD and these new devices can't even hold a candle to it. 3.8 WVGA display, FM Radio, 5MP camera with Autofocus, GPS, front full 2nd VGA camera, 7 hardware buttons, magnetic stylus, expandable memeory via Micro SD (now up to 32GB) all in a form factor the same size as the iPhone! (who can beat that?!)
Only thing the HD's missing is US 3G support, and Video Out, and a capacitve touchscreen.
Damn I love my HD!!!!!
The only way to make the HD better

LOL yes many of us agree with you there!
I wonder if there's an exact launch date on this. I'm due for an upgrade soon.
Before getting the HD, I was a happy TyTN II user. Sure I wished for at least VGA and a larger screen but I was content (with the technology back then). But when the super sexy HD came out with WVGA and faster performance I was interested but the lack of keyboard held me back till I found out I could manipulate the screen to horizontal for any "serious typing" since the landscape keyboard was almost the same size in length as the physical keyboard. Now with FingerKeyboard (the black & red) I am completely satisfied. I gained light-weight and thin and able to type.
My next upgrade will be for windows 6.5 and the faster processor and video card!
I think my girlfriend will be pleased
I just pre-ordered the diamond2
expected delivery date: april 10th
I'm gonna be so lucky tonight

HTC Touch Pro 2, or HTC Touch HD?

Hey guys new member of the forum i will soon be getting a new phone and it will be either the Touch Pro 2 or the Touch HD. I'm not sure which one to get as i can live without a hardware keyboard which makes the device slimmer and easier to hold, but the question is what is the difference between the 2 phones? are they running the exact same software with the same features etc etc? if they operate exactly the same the HD looks nicer in my opinion, this will be my first time owning a windows mobile, will both phones get the same updates/custom roms. Other peoples opinions on these phones would be a great help, thanks in advance.
Sorry if this is not the correct section to be posting this.
If it was me, I'd maybe hold out for the HTC Leo, the HD's successor
Another thread which is kinda similar regarding people asking what to get after the HD maybe worth a read
thanks for your reply i will have a read of that, the issue is my contract runs out soon and the Leo doesn't yet have a release date and will be getting a new phone the day my contract runs out as i can't get through the day without my phone lol.
Isn't much difference apart from the qwerty keyboard, screen size, D-pad and camera. Generally everything else is similar. Check both the specs and read the wiki for both devices, have a look at the rom forums on both to see whats available.
It would most likely come down what you want, or what your looking for in a device. Basically personal opinion.
TP2 every day in the week.
thanks for the feedback guys. Well i prefer a slightly bigger screen and a slimmer looking phone and find the TP2 to be a little bulky, but if the software is the same this helps a lot as i like the look of the software from the TP2 which will be the same on the HD.

Huge screen, but huge screen means less pixels = less quality. TP2 got a huge advantage when it comes down to screen resolution vs. HD. And the TP2 got a keyboard and 4 hardware buttons you can actually feel.

You're kidding, right? TP2 and HD both have WVGA - you're not seriously telling me that the pixel density on the HD is not high enough? I doubt you could even tell the difference between the two concerning DPI!
And I'd rather have a larger screen than a smaller one - even if the higher DPI would make a difference... What's the use of having a higher DPI on a smaller screen?
Hd is better in music as it has 3.5 mm audio jack which means better sound quality and also hd is higher in price (the only issue is that hd will not get wm6.5 officially from htc ) but i think it will but htc does not announce that to sell alot of the recent devices

I have a Touch HD, although it is in for repairs at the moment, and would consider the TP2 but the lack of a headphone jack is killing me. I live in the US and have not had a chance to play with the TP2. I have AT&T which I am assuming will not have the headphone jack like the Sprint and Verizon (CDMA) model has, Lucky Bastards!!! Anyway, that is what will probably stop me from getting the TP2.
I am sure there will be other options with a headphone jack in the future since HTC has made it clear that most future devices will have them. TP3?? I think they are a little sore from the lashing they took for not putting it in the TP2 which is clearly a great multimedia device. Kida like buying some of the original flat panel tv's that didn't have a TV tuner or speakers. Kinda defeats the purpose.
Well I personally recomend the Touch HD (not only for the reason that I have it and I love it ) when I was choosing my device I was looking for the bigest screen on the market as I like browsing the internet a lot and let me say this BIGGER IS BETTER when we are talking about PPC's nothing can change that also you get a cool design that gets the "WOW" effect from anyone and your pants will not fall to the ground when you are carying it in your pocket. It really depends on the person but for me if I have two phones with almost equal specifications I'll go for the bigger screen even if it is 0,1 inches bigger than the other one.Leo is probably my next device but I heard great things about TOSHIBA's TG01 4.1 inch monster with 1ghz proccessor that's only 10mm thick if you can get your hands on that (it's available in some areas) I would recommend that.
If you are only using one phone I would get the TP2. As I already have the E71 for emails etc I ordered the Touch HD yesterday as a semi tablet.
if it were me, id let my contract run out, continue using the service with your old phone until Leo is released, then upgrade if your carrier runs with the leo, if it doesnt id then upgrade to the most expencive phone they offer then leaving it in its box id flog it on ebay an use the money to buy the leo...
just my thoughts
