Possibility to record videos in [email protected] - Touch HD General

Hi folks,
I was wondering if there´s any possibility of making the Touch HD record videos in [email protected], just like Xperia X1.
As the Xperia is manufactured by HTC, the hardware should be very similar. So, has anyone thought about trying to make the video recording better?
It´s a shame that a pda like Touch HD, turned to media playing content (because of its huge screen), has a crappy video recording.
It´s weird because it can shoot 5 megapixel pics, but it "can´t" record VGA videos.
So, let´s try a way to discover how to make it record better videos.
Who´s with me?

ok, you can start, and all of us will see your progress

kersh, your post was completely unnecessary. If my post is so stupid, just ignore it.
I believe I have the right of having a question and post here, I´m free to do so. And I expect that only helpful posts to be posted here from now on.
I think other people have already thought what I asked above and are also interested in the helpful answers. Please, do not polute this forum with this kind of posts.
Thanks.

Your post is not a question, is a "HEY I WANT 30FPS ON MY TOUCH HD, SO PEOPLE START TO WORK FOR ME" with a ;D for sharm.
This is a topic already discused on A LOT of threads, like video performance, or TV out, you are not the first persin that want this feature, and if you search, maybe found it.
In other side, if you want something, dont ask others to develop for you, try to help.
And by the way, it seems to be that 30fps video it is only possible on X1 processor "A" version.

Hey Kersh,
Many are interested in the answer to this question.
If you know that it has been raised before, please provide a link to it, and we will all thank you.
If you're unwilling to do so, please just ignore the post.
I have spent a lot of time already on the forum but do not have time to see every single posts. It is not unreasonable to post a question even if there is already answer elsewhere.
This forum is not just about getting answer all the time. It is also a form of social interaction. Some of us even enjoy giving help to anyone who needs it, although it is on topic where answers are already availalbe with a search.
If you do not like the topic, just skip it. Nobody points a gun on your head to read it, if you feel your precious time is wasted.

The camera hardware from the Xperia is very different then the cammera hardware from the HD... To my understanding This feauture is bound to the camera hardware, and not to the Quallcom part of the hardware.
Therefor you can't compare them, and its probably impossible to get [email protected] fps recording native on the Touch HD.

kersh, I do NOT have a Touch HD, I even haven´t got money for buying it I was just curious to know if that was possible.
Eaglesteve, thanks for the support.
Lord.Bachus, I didn´t know the camera hardware was different in both phones. Unfortunately.

rudeys
No need to chew the guy out in a rude way... we all were eeeediots once you know. Let me add to the idiocy... what if the capture was not compressed but more raw file - would this allow for better FPS?

Programs you use

Hey everyone - now that many people are getting the HD (through the post, shop, stealing, whatever) I was wondering what programs that people are using.
If possible, please also state what the app does. eg;
Coreplayer - multiple-format video player.
Also, please post in Beards' topic with version numbers, screen resolutions, etc!

Yes there are. And if you take a little look around the forum you'll even find a thread dedicated to exactly that...
I looked through 3 pages fof topics... Though it's nice to see you post in all duplicated topics...

That tells us what programs work, not what the programs do and why people use them.
Different topics IMO. I'm interested in this thread.
Thank you for correcting my error constructivly, Beards. I don't venture out of BLACKSTONE or ELF, really. Will do, now.

The opening question clearly states:- "Ones that work well with the HD, that is."
What we don't want to end up having is two topics with members posting what works in this topic but not in the other ~ which after all is what the other topic is all about.

Jon,
All you need do is go to the topic and ask......
Yes, the topic does list software titles working/not working but there's nothing wrong is posting anything specific about a specified program.
In fact I personally would recommend it.... The more information available is so much better.

This all stems from the fact software is a total mess on windows mobile - even looking at the biggest sites like clickgamer and handandgo none of them have support for the HD yet. As soon as microsoft bring out their software store the better - that's one thing apple got very very right with the iphone.

There, edited the first post. People can post in both topics. I think it would be interesting to see how many people, for example, used LunarTilt or that iPhone GUI - Beards, with your topic, if someone sees Coreplayer 2.5, they may not bother to list any other interesting apps they use.
Thanks for the link Acelister.
If I find anything of interst applicable for this topic I'll pass it back on to you.

one major problem and handicap windows mobile will have over the iphone.
The mobile osx is only one device (iphone), so it is a lot easier for developers to create and optimise software for the device, as for wm the developers have to think about the many different devices, thus full optimisation isnt really possible, that is why not all programs will run on all devices.
cor blimey - didn't mean to start anything off here, sorry!
The thread of http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442663 is fantastic, and very much appreciated.
If I ever catch up with you guys who have been playing with WM for years, and come across an unlisted app that works, please be assured that I will add to it
However - as a noob, short of Googling each and every one of them to find out what they do (ok, some are pretty obvious!), I have no idea which fall into the categories of "kinda vital" through to "dead useful if you want to do something dead specific".
What I was really hoping for in this thread (and I guess supersquash in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=446128 and Philo25 in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=445543) was a sort of 'starter for 10'.
Looks like between the various posts we're getting there though, so MANY thanks to everyone
Well I've never really gone out of my way to install anything on my Touch Elf, so this was pretty new to me too. I've been getting the hang of it though.
I've installed:
Advanced Config (changes various hidden options),
Capsure (screen capture utility),
Coreplayer (video player),
Klaxon (alarm),
Total commander (better than File Manager),
SPB Mobile Shell (makes the Today screen look completely different),
iFonz (makes the Today screen look like the iPhone).
Those are all easily found using Google.
Nice one Sir - good to see there's a few of us in the same boat!
sounds like a good starter list - now I just need to start Googling where to get these from...
LOL - wife's gonna love me for the next few weeks...
I'd best start earning some brownie points fast before the HD actually arrives

I'm supposed to be spending time right now trying to get hold of a Nokia 7510 (yes, I know, but she likes it!) - and instead I'm on here downloading stuff for a handset that hasn't even arrived yet LOL

TV out functionality on the HD

I have searched and found an old thread on this, but it was basically almost all speculative, as the HD wasn't acutally released yet (although there appeared to be some email from HTC stating that the HD would NOT support TV out)
What I'm wondering [now that we've had the device for some time] is;
Does it or does it not support TV out [as standard]? (I'm thinking I know the answer already, but would like to hear for sure from someone who knows such things )
Secondly.....if it's a no...is there a way to enable TV-out?
(Basically I have just bought a pair of the MYVU glasses and really would love to be able to use them with my HD!)
Many thanks
I'm fairly certain the answer is a big NO.
But, I have heard there are people trying to crack the system to make this work.
My confidence is low that a solution will be found (and I'm selling my Touch Pro tv-out cable on eBay!)

I have noticed in a couple of threads that there seems to be a large amount of, shall i say, lazy people.
Neglecting to use the search function, disrespecting others who are fed up answering the same questions again and again.
It seems they can't (or are simply to lazy to) read, use the search button or even common sense

I believe the REAL issue is that people don't know how to best perform searches by utilizing keywords. Say I'm having an issue with my z plantronics bluetooth headset on my HTC HD2 Leo phone - providing all the relevant search terms, model numbers, etc an including "xda dev" (or other forums) can put you where you need to be better than "plantronics headset". And using googles image link can help you determine your model - a picture is worth a million web pages. My, hopefully relevant, contribution.

Why we care about FPS? (Who should care?)

Ok,
I see this raging debate about the 30FPS and I am starting to wonder what I might be missing in the discussion.
So, leaving out the issue of 'but it could be so much faster' (yes I know that is difficult for some techies...), why do I care? I am your average smart phone user. I am not a power user and only game I'd care to have on phone would be maybe my old Might and Magics (but havent even considered looking to see if that is possible).
I use GPS, camera, (video would be a bonus but if I really want I'll use my panasonic lumix), phone, email, internet, texting (SMS & MMS).
Now I do notice that if my finger moves too fast on lock screen I lose the locker and it goes back into place. Is that a frame rate issue? Don't know, but seems to work for me to just slow down my unlock swipe.
Please let me know if there is some black hole I do not see about this FPS issue. To me it is like computer builds....do people overclock and could my machine go faster? Yep...but do I even care? Not really, it works for my current gaming use of Forgotten Realms stuff and should work for Dragon Age when that price comes down far enough for me. When I need a faster computer I'll build one...figure if this phone makes it for next 1.5-2 years with it's current setup I am pretty good.
My Evo is lickety split fast. This 30fps is a tempest in a teapot.

There are 5 topics that go off into rants and hatin and they all talk about WHY it COULD be faster. I have yet to really figure out why the regular user should care.
I mean what I 'gather' is that some gamers find they want the phone to run as fast as their xbox. Well it's not a xbox and not even a psp. So if that is what is upsetting people...then I just ask for clarification.
If there is another actual smart phone function that is severly crippled by this FPS...then I am missing it.
So...I have looked at those threads...as long as they seemed productive. They do not answer MY question which is...what things specifically are impacted by the FPS issue? And in association with that, what should an average smartphone user care about?
Looking at all the vids of performance and all the numbers have been helpful in 'showing' that this exists. If you don't want to help, no need to bother with this thread...go read others.

yeah...and if the fps cap has no relevance to you, then why are you making a whole other thread dedicated to it, when we already have a ton... People like you make absolutely no sense and (no offense) I feel are a big part of whats wrong in society today... people with no "common"-sense.
I wanna be able to run the PSX emulator for Android that ZoTTD is working on when it comes out (hopefully this month, FF7 FTW!) and I am doubtful 30 FPS will cut it. Emulators are the only gaming I care about, personally.

I don't think there's any reason to attack, I think he has a valid question. He is basically saying he likes his phone and it fulfills his needs, but what is it exactly that he would get daily use out of that he is missing with the FPS cap. This is the General thread where it belongs after all, at least he didn't post this in Development...

I didn't mean to offend you but it just makes absolutely no sense to start anther entire thread over an issue that you don't even care for. If you KNOW your thread has and will not gather any productive information, then why the heck are you posting... It seems like you just want your two cents voiced, so that you can feel relevant... Input lag is an issue that affects ALL evo users, not just gamers.
There is a full half second delay when scrolling up and down. You can try it yourself in the Settings app, just swipe your finger up or down real fast and the screen lags behind your finger's movement.
Its really lame, especially for a phone this powerful.
It's not just the fps. The input frequency is lowered as well. So, not only does scrolling through menus look blurry and doesn't follow your finger very well, there's also a lag behind it to begin with. The touch frequency is 30Hz, and the display rate is 30fps. Those two combined creates a visually disgusting appearance. Because the hardware is capable of much more is NOT the reason we're pissed off; that's just more reason to justify why it should be doing what we expect. Would you buy a 1080p 55" LCD for $2000 if it showed all your blu-rays at 12fps? I certainly wouldn't.

I'd rather not give my personal opinion because people will probably take it as facts.
What I will tell you is that I do not see any evidence in the kernel of specific instructions for the supersonic to throttle the fps, whether it be halting refresh or alternating the framebuffer. This is not to say that it's not there; I just haven't found it yet. Everything is a little confusing because we don't have the official source, and even without the HDMI drivers, it's still throttled, meaning that it can't be the HDMI driver code stealing the frames.
To answer your question, I probably will not return the phone. I still love it.
This thread absolutely applies to me. I have tried to follow a few of the others on this topic, but they quickly became overly technical or a sounding board for anyone that has to find fault.
Cicatrize - Thank you for the concise answer to the question. I am not a "superuser" of this phone, yet, but agree that the delayed input is a bit bothersome. It's good to know that THAT is the outcome that effects me most.

Agreed. It became even more bothersome to me last night when my buddy's ancient G1 was smoother than my phone. He actually noticed it before I had a chance to tell him. He said it looked choppy and blurry when swiping desktops and scrolling. The input lag seemed to really annoy him too.

Htc new answer to evo 30fps limitation..

I sent several complaints to htc and got response from different reps.
Rep#1
"Thank you for your reply. You are correct that the Sprint EVO 4G is locked in at 30FPS. Since the HTC EVO 4G employs a unique HDMI output to deliver video in HD quality to an external display, the hardware graphics driver interface on the HTC EVO 4G uses significant resources for the HDMI output and therefore displays graphics at 30 frames per second on the integrated display. This is a hardware, and not a software, limitation. It’s important to keep in mind that content including most movies and television, are created to run at between 24 and 30 frames per second. The 30FPS is a hardware limitation. This should not present a major issue for most Android applications; however, the customer may have some issues with some 2D or 3D applications. We have also found that some games may be impacted by this limitation.
The device has been locked at 30 FPS due to enhance overall performance in the device. By lowering the FPS of the device the CPU works less. This increases the battery life of the device. There may be third party options available to remove this limitation; however HTC does not condone the use of, support the use of, or offer technical assistance with regard to these third party solutions. I do apologize for any inconvenience you may have experience."
Rep#2
"Thank you for taking the time to contact HTC America Technical Support via E-Mail with your comment regarding the fps of your HTC EVO 4G. I understand how important it is for your device to function to your specifications and I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you.
We are investigating the viability of claims that the limitation of 30fps can be overcome by software changes. As soon as we finish our investigations, HTC will announce its findings. There may be third party options available to remove this limitation; however HTC does not condone the use of, support the use of, or offer technical assistance with regard to these third party solutions.
If we can be of further assistance with setting up your sync program, please don’t hesitate to call 1.866.449.8358. We are available Sunday through Saturday 6:00 a.m. until 1:00."

" if im worng by putting this here this can always be deleted and posted somewhere else.
Yeah but if you actually read other sections on this site your responses have already been given to other people by HTC. These are not new, we have heard them before. This really should have been rolled in to the other pre existing threads. Why would you not post it in the general section and ask if it should be placed in development? I think I know the answer to my own question....
Sent from my evo using XDA App
Darn, I was hoping it was something new from them.
Wow! People really need to chill out. Why is everyone so easily bent out of shape recently here and at ppcgeeks?

Do you really want to know?
Well this is a development forum. There is a slightly higher standard here and if you can't follow some basic rules then you have no business posting here.

Those are pretty clear to me. Pretty easy to follow for anyone with a brain stem. No one expects perfection or you to write source code the fastest but at least read the ****ing directions and follow the basic rules of our home.
This had no business getting posted in development, it has no business in general when there is a massive 600 something or whatever posts on this exact same crap. Not to mention multiple other scattered threads.
Best part is there is already a hacked solution to this with working camera / everything else working, that at least for now is more than enough. So anyone that really gives a **** already has the fix and this isn't even an issue.
Seriously!!! You ****ing losers need to calm down. You act like its ****ing blasphemy that this poor guy posted in the wrong place. What? Did you waste 10 seconds of your worthless lives reading his post and find something you already knew. Congrats!! If you dont have the power to move it then **** off. So much of this lately.

I spent 20 seconds Not wasted mind you I knew what was going to ensue after I read the OP's post.
Each and everyone one of you have done this when you are new to a board. You only learn from experience. We were all NOOBS at one point. We didn't graduate to Geekdom overnight.
When I first came on here I was treated like a red-headed step child for not understanding how to ROOT. I read and read and eventually learned how on my own mostly due to the RUDE responses from some of the people who thought they were entitled to treat newcomers like 3rd rate citizens.
I have given my share of smart assed remarks and have called people out on some things. But when someone new posts a relink or asks a question that they could have searched for I just help because its no BIG deal.
Yes you can say they are lazy or perhaps you might have to consider they are new and aren't well versed in searching. Who really knows. If they are repeat offenders then call them out otherwise its just a simple post that anyone can choose to ignore and not contribute.
It's all good..
I don't think tech knowledge is the issue here and in other threads. I think the issue is forum etiquette. And on a tech/informative forum, the standard should be a little higher than that of a lounge type forum. People should have informative titles (which this one does). Posts should go in the relevant thread (possibly an issue on this one). Searches should be made before making any new thread. And content should be relevant, accurate, and informative (I'm guilty of that first with regards to this post). It can be a delicate balance between over regulation and under regulation. The forums with the highest signal to noise ratio tend to be over regulated but there is such a thing as going too far and pissing off your membership.
There is one forum that I am a member of and have been so for about five years now and I have not made one single post. I am a very outspoken person and I still have not posted there. Why? Because I haven't had anything extremely relevant that will bring knowledge to any of the threads I've seen there and if your post doesn't "bring the tech", you're banned. That's possibly taking it too far but I can say that it is one of the most well behaved, most informative forums I have ever seen. If I just want to hang out and shoot the breeze, I can do so on other forums. So, I just linger and watch, as newbs should do, until I have something to add.

Hahaha... I bet you're talking about elitistjerks.com
Please. Just get over yourselves. It's a good thing that new people are coming to the forums. That means the Android community is growing and moving into more mainstream. Educate and direct people... don't spank them. Otherwise, you'll send them right back to their friendly iPhone forums.
Sounds to me like some 35 year old men need to get out of their moms basement and meet people face to face and learn how to treat others.
Holier than thou attitudes will run people away and along with that the innovation that comes with new ideas. I've been in many environments where a closed loop could not resolve an important issue because they were addressing the issue as they always have. It took someone new looking at the problem, with different experiences, in order to resolve the issue in the best possible way, if you don't like it, or your pride gets hurt, then you probably don't need to be part of the team.
I have also known people who could give Einstein a run for his money, but because they lacked the people skills, they couldn't get in with any major position enough where people would listen, they usually got sent to the corner of R&D and played with obscure possibilities.
As you can tell, I hate arrogance, and because I don't post much in this forum, doesn't mean I can't kick your ass in every other aspect of technology, worldly issues, and life in general.... So put down the mountain dew, and get up out of the basement, and maybe just maybe, you'll find that your high horse isn't high at all.
