Compass Mode ?? - G1 General

Where is or how do you access what they were calling "compass mode" in the videos ?

Should be in maps.
Under settings or menu, it should be one of the options.

open maps.
click menu>>Map Mode>>Street View. It will need to process for a sec or two. You'll see the streets start lighting up with a light blue border. I think this indicates they have a street view picture for that street at that location.
Click somewhere on the map to get a Street View. Click on the street view balloon. Street View will load.
When it is done loading, hit menu>>Compass mode.
You can now move your phone around and the accelerometer will adjust the phone's view as if you were actually there.

Cool BEans!

Thank you for this much appreciated!

Compass mode would be cool... how is it on 3G? I don't have 3G here and it works great at home (WiFi) but on EDGE it seems to slow to be usable.

It's as smooth as WiFi on 3G, at least it was when I tried it.

I have it a spin on 3G and edge over lunch today. 3G is really fast, takes a second or two to load the iamges. Edge takes about 10 seconds to load the images, but once loaded the spin around just fine when you move your phone.

Never mind .. I found it. It is not called compass mode .. it is street view . . Great .. nice.

There is a compass mode, you just have to be in street view first to have it work.
With just plain street view you have to use the touch screen or the trackball to move the view around.
But with compass mode....you just have to move the phone and the accelerometer knows which way you're facing, and adjusts the picture to match. Tilt the phone up, and you see the sky and tops of buildings, tilt it down, and you see the road.

Street View Navigation

How do you get it to go to street view while navigating?
Like in this video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SYoBHbt8NY&feature=channel
no clue lol that looks pretty cool though, not sure how useful it would be.
Try zooming in or double tapping. Just did it here.
It wont do street view for the entire navigation, only at each turn or new step in the route. Every time you see a white arrow you can double tap or long press (not sure which) and street view will come up. The view at the end of route will happen automatically.
It's a double tap. It will show your next waypoint/exit/turn until you reach that point, then it will automatically switch back to birds eye view.
Im really impressed by google nav, the first time i pulled up to a location and it showed me the picture of the house i was in awe haha, its a good thing too cause it was my uncles new house that id never been to but it worked perfect

Google Maps and Wallpaper questions

Hi,
I've searched and can't find the answers to my questions. I don't know if I'm using seach right, but if I type in google maps I get a list that's nothing to do with google maps
Anyway, the google maps question. I've just used this program for the first time today as was stuck in traffic and wanted to look for an alternative root. When I was driving along I noticed that the screen doesn't follow you. The blue dot moved as I did, but once it got to the end of the screen it carried on off the screen, and the screen/map didn't move along with it to track me. How do I get it to do this?
And the wallpaper question. I can't find a way to resize the pictures I choose as the lockscreen wallpaper so that it fits the screen properly, how do I do this? The picture is too zoomed in so it cuts a lot of it off.
Cheers
Google: Hope this is not a dumb question: did you do >Menu>Use GPS?
On re-sizing images: I don't think there's an app on the HD2 to do it. If you go to a regular PC or Mac graphics app, you can connect put the image on the SD card, connect your HD2 to your computer as an external disk drive, and then re-format the image to 480x800 pixels, then save it back.

When searching for a phrase, use quotes around the search criteria, such as "google maps". That will look for the two words together. If you search for google maps, you'll get anything with either word in it.
With google maps, it will use the network to detect your location, so I don't know why it kept going when you stopped, and it should always remain centered on the blue dot, so it sounds like the map stopped moving when you did. Anyway, just turn on GPS from the menu.
As for wallpaper, you're really better off resizing the image manually on your PC. There's plenty of software out there (freeware) for editing and manipulating images. Just google for that. As I'm sure you're aware, you'll need to resize to 480x800 for the lockscreen.
Hope this helps

Here's some freeware image editors...

Google Maps
If you touch the blue dot (bottom right) I think it follows you. if you manually move the map after that, it stops.
I'm in an office right now so can't check but i'm pretty sure that's what happens.

Good point - I couldn't figure out why it would just stop moving and let the dot go off the screen.
Thanks for the responses. Iill try the google maps again on the way home. I did have GPS on, but maybe I moved the screen.
Just to clarify what I meant in the meantime though. The page/map remained stationary, only the blue dot moved as I moved. The blue dot obviously moved further and further along the road and carried right on off the screen. The page/map did not then move along with it, so I was just left with the map showing where I had started from, and not knowing where I was at the present time.
Is that any clearer, or more confusing
I'll just have to manually resize the picture then, little annoying, but not the end of the world

As paullong said, you must have manually moved the map. This makes it stop following you, but the dot still shows where you are. The map just doesn't center on it any more.
If that happens, press the blue square with a dot in it at the bottom right and will center back in on you.

Alternative explanation: you were out of range of a data service so Google couldn't pull down maps fast enough .

That wouldn't stop the map moving. It just stops the map downloading.
It's working fine, must have moved the map before. Pressed the blue dot and all works fine.
Many thanks

Google maps Heading Up?

On my Google maps I would like for the map to be oriented in the direction I'm travelling. (So the map turns while I turn)
So I'm always driving toward the top of the screen. As it is now sometimes it shows me driving sideways or down. It's easy enough to do on my Garmin, but I can't find a setting for this on my Google maps, I'm using a MyTouch3G by the way.
Also one other question. I'm using the new 3.4 version and I noticed when I had the 'Compass' on, the map didn't move while I was driving, and I would drive off the screen till I pressed 'My Location' to recenter the map.
Anyone else notice this?
I turned off the compass, and the map movement returned to normal with the map moving around me, and me centered in the map.
Every time I've used the navigation of Google Maps the map always moves around me so I'm always traveling "forward." Although, I don't believe I've ever had the compass turned on in my maps. If I remember I'll test on the way to work and check back.

But there's two different things. I didn't try navigation today, maybe if I had nav on it would orient the way I like it.
The problem with me driving off the map was just with compass on though.
When I had compass off the map would scroll, keeping me in the center, but the orientation was North always up, I'd rather have 'heading' up even with navigation off.
Ah, I don't believe I've ever had "heading up" outside of nav before. I'll just play with the compass and see what happens haha
Tried it out....here are my results:
Normal map with compass: no "heading up" display, the compass never showed up either, but my map did scroll keeping my location in the center.
Normal map without compass: still no "heading up" display and the map kept my location in the center.
Nav with compass: this was displayed with "heading up" and it also showed a compass with it (of course scrolling with my progress).
Nav without compass: no different than above...still had a compass even.
Adding and removing the compass was done through "Spare Parts" on my phone.

Thanks Sleeve, nice work. I used Nav tonight and had heading up also. Are you using the new 3.4 version? It has 'compass' in it's menu. Doesn't show a compass, just directs the arrow even when you're not moving.
How to bookmark locations?
Well using nav a little more today, and found another question if anyone knows the answer.
I'd like to be able to save locations, like my house, and various addresses. To something like favorites or bookmarks. But can't find any place to do that. I can find locations easily enough with the map or just typing in, but how to save them for future use?

Got it.
Now I ran into something else. A few days ago when I'd search for 'Walmart' it would give me a text list of the nearby walmarts with address and I could pick which one I wanted from the list.
Today it is just giving me red pushpins on the map, not a list. I can still find the one I want by scrolling the map 'IF' I know where to look. How do I get the option for a text list back?
Thanks.
hit the list icon on the lower left corner

Ah, so thats why my little navigation dot wasn't a dot anymore, it was an arrow haha. Either way it kept me in the center at all times.

Street View?

On my mt3g i used to be able to zoom in all the way to the street level on Google Maps, and it would then go into street view.
I haven't found a way to pull up street view on the Vibrant as yet however (except for when using navigation and you reach you destination...)
anyone?
If you click on any street it will popup the location information, by selecting that you can get to street view. I agree that this is a kludge, but that is the only way I have found so far.

Google maps 5.0 update in Android Market

Hai Everyone
Google Maps 5.0 update now available through android market
Check it out
is the 3d view only available in some cities? i can rotate my map but no 3d is available?
3d is only in some cities. L.a. for example. Though I can't figure out how to rotate or change the angle.
Sent from my HTC Legend using XDA App
I can't find Google Maps in Market on froyo (regular, not rooted)... Any idea?
Seems like we got everything except rotate functionality.
@nolook: Check out Toronto for some 3D action, it's there.
@thunderpossuem: to change the angle place two fingers side by side on the screen and wipe down, repeat the same while wiping up to return to an overhead view.
I can't seem to rotate though which is a shame, still a great update.
Try as I might, I just can't make it work. Not that it really worries me. We don't have any of that 3d business over in Brisbane

I can't find in on a market too. Can somebody please publish the installer here.

your right toronto has 3d buildings...very cool...compass feature/offline browsing are also extremely useful features...
maybe rotate will be added or maybe the legend doesnt have that type of multitouch...
Rotate does work on the legend. tap on the "center on my location" button, and tap once more, the burton will change into a compass. There are two modes. One of them will rotate the map when you rotate your phone.

Not quite the same thing as actually rotating it with your fingers, now is it?
So no, from the point of multitouch, rotate isn't working.

I can get the 3D buildings in the applicable cities, but I can't change the angle while wiping down with two fingers. I didn't think that changing the angle was supported for the Legend. Is it actually working for you?

I don't have change angle and I don't have the compass mode. It only centers on my location and thats it. I'm on Cyanogen mod maybe thats why.
Tilting now working after updating CM6.1 to the experimental kernel oO

Hi guyz, Do these features work only on froyo? My legend is still on 2.1 (as froyo update in not released here in Aus). I didn't find anything new in google maps 5. No 3d views of any cities, no tilt/rotate, no compass mode. Same old tiled-maps .
In UK looks like Cardiff, Birmingham & Leeds have 3d features.
In Brum I can see city centre in 3d, tilt & rotate with compass all very smoothly.
Very Nice!
