What do you look like?

Following the whole lines of the "Who's who" post and getting to know everyone on here, I thought it would be interesting to see who we deal with on a daily basis on here, since go knows we've all spent so much time on here .... plus it's always nice to be able to to put a face with the names....

Samsung Instinct Call Answer

I can't find video of it, but if anyone has played with the Samsung Instinct, when an incoming call comes in, you slide up to answer, down to deny. It's pretty nice looking.
Just wondering if there is something like this, or if someone could develop a copy of it. I know there is Slide 2 Answer on S2U2, but it's not very similar and (to my knowledge) you have to have S2U activated to use this, or else it will just have buttons.
I know I'm not supposed to post a new thread if I'm not contributing, but I've seen people get away with it and I searched everywhere for this. My apologies in advance.
That is a good solution indeed. It would solve the problem of accidentally accepting calls while pulling the phone out of your pocket. It's very hard to implement on the Diamond though, because you can't mess with the phone app much.
Found the video...
It's at 5:30 of this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhzpTS7CpfU
it looks like a nice feature and with some skins could look pretty nice and cleaned up given all the talent on xda
it would be interesting to see something like this develop probably as an add on to s2u2 like the s2u2-vc
Yes, thanks for the agreement.
next version of Sunscape could include this way of answer or deny a call.
That'd be sweet. I hope someone takes interest in this idea.
Gotta co-sign that. If that ever got implemented into s2u2, it'd be a wrap. Best app ever.
Agreed! Even without s2u2.
bump? z
Last bump, doesn't anyone else like this?
It's definitely a great idea. Just have to wait until one of the great developers here want to take on the task.

Why we care about FPS? (Who should care?)

Ok,
I see this raging debate about the 30FPS and I am starting to wonder what I might be missing in the discussion.
So, leaving out the issue of 'but it could be so much faster' (yes I know that is difficult for some techies...), why do I care? I am your average smart phone user. I am not a power user and only game I'd care to have on phone would be maybe my old Might and Magics (but havent even considered looking to see if that is possible).
I use GPS, camera, (video would be a bonus but if I really want I'll use my panasonic lumix), phone, email, internet, texting (SMS & MMS).
Now I do notice that if my finger moves too fast on lock screen I lose the locker and it goes back into place. Is that a frame rate issue? Don't know, but seems to work for me to just slow down my unlock swipe.
Please let me know if there is some black hole I do not see about this FPS issue. To me it is like computer builds....do people overclock and could my machine go faster? Yep...but do I even care? Not really, it works for my current gaming use of Forgotten Realms stuff and should work for Dragon Age when that price comes down far enough for me. When I need a faster computer I'll build one...figure if this phone makes it for next 1.5-2 years with it's current setup I am pretty good.
My Evo is lickety split fast. This 30fps is a tempest in a teapot.

There are 5 topics that go off into rants and hatin and they all talk about WHY it COULD be faster. I have yet to really figure out why the regular user should care.
I mean what I 'gather' is that some gamers find they want the phone to run as fast as their xbox. Well it's not a xbox and not even a psp. So if that is what is upsetting people...then I just ask for clarification.
If there is another actual smart phone function that is severly crippled by this FPS...then I am missing it.
So...I have looked at those threads...as long as they seemed productive. They do not answer MY question which is...what things specifically are impacted by the FPS issue? And in association with that, what should an average smartphone user care about?
Looking at all the vids of performance and all the numbers have been helpful in 'showing' that this exists. If you don't want to help, no need to bother with this thread...go read others.

yeah...and if the fps cap has no relevance to you, then why are you making a whole other thread dedicated to it, when we already have a ton... People like you make absolutely no sense and (no offense) I feel are a big part of whats wrong in society today... people with no "common"-sense.
I wanna be able to run the PSX emulator for Android that ZoTTD is working on when it comes out (hopefully this month, FF7 FTW!) and I am doubtful 30 FPS will cut it. Emulators are the only gaming I care about, personally.

I don't think there's any reason to attack, I think he has a valid question. He is basically saying he likes his phone and it fulfills his needs, but what is it exactly that he would get daily use out of that he is missing with the FPS cap. This is the General thread where it belongs after all, at least he didn't post this in Development...

that is my issue with the 30fps and it goes away when I apply the hack! Thats just me though..

WOW....I am what is wrong with society? Person who actually does research, who digs into issues, who weighs pros and cons, and looks for more information before making a decision?
I am what is wrong with society when I do not instantly fall into the current tempest/furor/infotainment/news crisis and actually want to think through it before I decide it it is even worth my time?
That is what is wrong with society???
WOW...thank you. I did not think I could be amazed by anything today. You rank right up there because instead of just continuing on with your day you took the time to actually post a very judgemental post and reach out to deliberatly swing at someone you do not know...showing your true colors for me.
Input lag and emulators...got it.
Input lag....I assume you mean on typing and screen movements?
Emulators...I love the idea and that is kinda what I wondered from most of the discussions.

I didn't mean to offend you but it just makes absolutely no sense to start anther entire thread over an issue that you don't even care for. If you KNOW your thread has and will not gather any productive information, then why the heck are you posting... It seems like you just want your two cents voiced, so that you can feel relevant... And correct me if I am wrong. But wouldn't you agree that people without the slightest bit of common sense or logical reasoning are what is wrong with the world today?
and I commented on your post because I am getting tired of this wonderful and helpful forum being turned into a scapegoat for egomaniacs who don't give a damn about productivity and just want to type non-sense at their keyboard and hope that others believe they know what they are talking about.

No disrespect, but what productivity did you add to this thread?
starplaya93 you need a hug.
(and I do not mean that in any kind of sarcastic way.)
This site and these forums have been 90% of my research on the new phone, I appreciate everyone that posts constructive stuff here. These forums helped me get rid of all the AT&T bloatware on my Raphael.
Sorry you feel my post rubbed you the wrong way, but I can guarantee that there are other newbs of all forms that would see your post and never participate. Me I got tuffer skin as I have lived on investment forums for the last 15 years or so...you want flaming fight add politics to investment.
Anyway, I still am very interested in my question...and think pulling the exact issues from all the scattered threads (which address hating the cap and how to fix) into one thread of why it is an issue is worthwhile.
Oh well...as they say...ymmv.

Input lag is an issue that affects ALL evo users, not just gamers.
There is a full half second delay when scrolling up and down. You can try it yourself in the Settings app, just swipe your finger up or down real fast and the screen lags behind your finger's movement.
Its really lame, especially for a phone this powerful.
It's not just the fps. The input frequency is lowered as well. So, not only does scrolling through menus look blurry and doesn't follow your finger very well, there's also a lag behind it to begin with. The touch frequency is 30Hz, and the display rate is 30fps. Those two combined creates a visually disgusting appearance. Because the hardware is capable of much more is NOT the reason we're pissed off; that's just more reason to justify why it should be doing what we expect. Would you buy a 1080p 55" LCD for $2000 if it showed all your blu-rays at 12fps? I certainly wouldn't.
hmmm
Ive been reading XDA for a while just never posted anything... Im sorry but sablesurfer didnt do anything wrong.. I see a fight starting now.... lol

I'd rather not give my personal opinion because people will probably take it as facts.
What I will tell you is that I do not see any evidence in the kernel of specific instructions for the supersonic to throttle the fps, whether it be halting refresh or alternating the framebuffer. This is not to say that it's not there; I just haven't found it yet. Everything is a little confusing because we don't have the official source, and even without the HDMI drivers, it's still throttled, meaning that it can't be the HDMI driver code stealing the frames.
To answer your question, I probably will not return the phone. I still love it.
This thread absolutely applies to me. I have tried to follow a few of the others on this topic, but they quickly became overly technical or a sounding board for anyone that has to find fault.
Cicatrize - Thank you for the concise answer to the question. I am not a "superuser" of this phone, yet, but agree that the delayed input is a bit bothersome. It's good to know that THAT is the outcome that effects me most.

Agreed. It became even more bothersome to me last night when my buddy's ancient G1 was smoother than my phone. He actually noticed it before I had a chance to tell him. He said it looked choppy and blurry when swiping desktops and scrolling. The input lag seemed to really annoy him too.

Thanks OP for starting this thread. I was wondering the same thing

FAQ Post Mod for OP's.

So I spend soooo much time just like anyone else searching through the threads of posts such as the new 2.2 builds looking for answers. There should be a way to implement a post right under the OP's post referring to all the Questions and Answers throughout the entire thread. That way it makes it easier for users to get the answers, and you wont have a million post asking the same damn question. Any idea on how to implement something like this? A way users can manage it instead of the op since it would take forever for the op?
Something like what is on Slickdeals you mean? Would be nice I imagine, though I can't see anything like that ever being implemented, since it would take a lot of work on the forum.
dunno but interesting question

[Q] i know nothing

hi all. there appears to be a real lot of seriously patient and helpful people here. i am really hoping so. if any of you have helped who you think is a complete idiot with the Nexus7, believe me, you haven't yet. i am about to change all that.
i have the wifi 32gig old Nexus 7. i have been lucky from the point of view that a friend of mine is much more knowledgeable than i could ever hope to be who has always helped when things went a bit awry. however, i would like to be able to learn to do some things myself. the new update seemed like a reasonable place to start. wrong!
anyway, i have the nexus7 described above running Android 4.2.2 and has TWRP installed. i didn't know that it wouldn't accept the 4.3 update OTA so had the issue that after downloading (i assume it has) the update, it asked to reboot. upon doing so, the TWRP screen appeared. i had no idea which option to choose so just selected 'Reboot'. it promptly did so and i found it is still on 4.2.2. that is where i am at the moment. i have looked around the forum but as i dont know what i am looking for, dont know if i have found it.
is anyone willing to take my life in their hands and try to educate 'a willing to learn but know nothing atm' newbe? even pointing me perhaps to some real idiot-proof info pages so i can at least read a bit would be a start. info on how to get from where i am (running 4.2.2) to where i would like to be (running 4.3) would be better, but hey, a start is a start
many TIA

I read everything I could about my devices. Search for my issues, here and on Google. Why wait for answers here when I can find just about every issue and fix on earth very quickly.
It's the best way to learn. Posting back and forth on here with people can take a lot of time to solve an issue....searching can solve it in minutes.
Just my two cents.

tnx for replies guys, but the problem is as i stated in my first post, i dont know what i have got to read. i looked on here and on Google. i am quite capable of using the search, but when i dont know exactly what i am searching for, it is a problem. i asked if someone could point me to what i needed to look at, i am not asking for someone to sit down next to me and do the job, unless i get in a muddle and i would then say.

You can lead a horse to water...
No offence intended, but I would leave your device alone until you have done all your research and understand exactly what you're doing. Otherwise you will very easily end up with a shiny paper weight.
Happens all the time here. And why? People did stuff without reading AND understanding what they were doing.

Wise advice indeed... I had a long winded explanation ready to go... then I read this.
There already seems to have been a higher-than-average number of hardbricks (broken bootloaders) since the rollout of 4.3.

Stick with 4.2.2 until you know what you're doing... but in the meantime, read everything you can find on fastboot and ADB.

you telling me to read the Stickies means absolutely nothing if i dont know what stickies to read or where they are. being a developer has done nothing as far as having some patience is concerned. i venture to say that you were not born with a nexus 7 hanging out your backside and an inbuilt knowledge of what to do. i also venture that you had to be shown and have explained procedures to you as well before you became competent at doing anything. your second post of 'Read The Stickies at least has a link so i know what to look at.. thanks for that!

oh, and dont bother to ban me, i ban myself!!
Hi, guys...
Can we all just take a step back here a little...
This whole thing is becoming a little intense.
@Pirateghost
You know your stuff, most decidedly... and I understand you're a little irritated by people who don't seem to want to be bothered....
But I don't think that's the case with with @Prettygrim. My instinct tells me he has approached XDA with the desire to learn (by his own admission, he knows nothing) ..... and is willing. Not everybody can hit the ground running.
@Prettygrim
XDA can sometimes seem to be a little unforgiving, particularly for beginners (you're thrown in at the deep end, with guys who have thousands of posts and years of experience under their belt), but slinging insults around is not the best way of helping yourself.
Do a bit of Googling... searchphrases : Nexus 7 4.3 OTA zip... Nexus 7 fastboot... Nexus 7 ADB.
There's a whole shed load of interesting stuff out there... and it's your's for the taking. BUT IT'S UP TO YOU TO DO THE TAKING.
It's almost become a cliche, but it also happens to be true... Google is your friend.
Use it.
Peace everybody .

Ged.
Lol. I'm the ignorant asshole because I know how to read and search?
Ged, yes I get extremely irritated at people who don't even bother searching before they post. It was horrible of me to assume that by hinting at what sticky he needed to read that it was enough. I didn't provide a link for him, therefore I'm the horrible person.
The agitation really kicks in high gear after a new android release. There is so much stupid in these forums the weeks following a release that after wading through thousands of worthless posts I tend to snap on at least one of them. I tried being nice and directing him to the stickies but it wasn't good enough. He wanted to be spoonfed the info. There are rules here that so many people break just by hitting that new thread button without doing any due diligence. Its ridiculous.

tnx Ged, for having a little bit of patience. i am willing to learn. i can read IF i know what to read! now i've been pointed to 'fastboot' and 'adb' i have a starting point and appreciate that.
pirateghost, if anyone wasn't reading it's you. i already said i had looked around. before being able to do something you want to do for the very first time, you have to know how to do it. before you can learn how to do it, you need to know what information to look for. that in itself isn't always easy or as straight forward as it perhaps should be. it seems to me that instead of of giving advice, encouragement and information, you use this forum as a personal 'have a go at some other thick ***ker'. you may well be extremely knowledgeable but you were not, under any circumstances, born with the knowledge inbuilt. you had to be taught. and i hasten to bet that whoever taught you had to have a bit of patience and a bit of forgiving. you didn't get it all right all the time, let alone the first time, so start cutting people a little slack, eh? one day i might be able to do this stuff by myself but it sure as hell aint gonna be yet a while and i know it! slagging people off, making them feel like the inferior beings that, at this moment, they (me) obviously are doesn't exactly lead them to wanting to be bothered to learn. that is a shame because one of those you ridicule could become really good and be of benefit to the whole community

Do you know what a sticky is in the forum?
Its where there is lots of relevant information that applies to a particular device and is denoted by a thumbtack image. It is always at the top of the forum section and threads can't be bumped above them unless they themselves become stickies or announcements.
That is where you start your reading. Along the way you will notice keywords that need to be explained. Those keywords are usually explained in the sticky but if they aren't then there is this awesome search provider called Google that will assist you in any way it can. Its really cool and you should give him a shot sometime.

I think it's sad that we have someone who wants to learn more about their device, and get's treated so badly. What some of you need to understand, is that the knowledge regarding these devices doesn't come so easily to everyone. What you were able to learn so easily is like a foreign language to someone else. I just ask that we all try to have some patience with members who are less experienced and knowledgeable than we are.
