Hi,
Being on a Mac too, I never found any flashing tool that was reliable, so your best bet is to use Parallels Desktop or VMWare to launch Win under MacOS...

have you tried flashing via these apps? how was it? I haven't tried it via emulation software since usb isn't as stable as having a windows machine, bootcamp should work.

if you are using bootcamp then it can be done and if you are using parrallel or any other virtualization then it can be done but you must first put your phone in BOOTLOADER mode and then connect to mac via USB and then flash your phone.

Hum, then how comes I just Flashed my cruise with wm6.1 through parallels? Would my beloved mac actually be a PC? omg.....
Nah, it CAN be done, I do it almost daily But, it's true that some CustomRUU.exe's sometimes act weird...
@approved101: depends on your ppc...

You can also flash through SD card. That way, it doesn't matter what OS you use.

Bootcamp will work fine obviously as it just makes your Mac a Windows machine. I found that the latest Parallels didn' work properly, flashing wouldn't go all the way to 100%. The latest VMware worked surprisingly well though.
There is an open source flash tool called HTCflasher that can be compiled for OS X. It doesn't seem to work though as it doesn't use Linux style paths to usb devices. There is a possibility we might get it to work someday though.

Manual for how to flash a rom in Vista

O.k. for everyone who's traying to Flash in Vista
Donwload the files from this link: http://rapidshare.com/files/38401715/Manual_and_files.rar.html
and extract them in a new created folder like for example your desktop. Extract the USB Modem Vista in a different folder on your desktop (easy to find)
- put your device in bootloader mode (press and hold power, light and softreset button)
- connect the MDA to your computer.
- open computer management (devicemanager) in vista, rightclick computer in startmenu and select manage (see step 1)
- in computermanager open devicemanager (step 2)
- follow step 3 and 4.
After step 4 browse to the folder where you extracted the USB Modem Vista and choose next.
It will install the active sync drivers to vista and you will be able to flash.
I attached a exit bootloader file to exit bootloader mode (you can also install drivers without flashing the device)
YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO EXIT BOOTLOADER MODE!!!! EVEN BEVORE FLASHING!!!!
If you do it properly it will be done in less than 4 minutes.
Good luck.

Nope. In Vista with current drivers and updates the driver cannot be updated to an older one; neither in bootloader mode (uknown USB device) nor in standard mode (PocketPC).

Don't hate if you're a noob With Vista
Download my package and see for yourself mate!
I run Vista Business for almost 6 months and I'm flashing trough Vista for quite a long time now. Even now after upgrading the Windows Mobile Device Center.
So as far as I know your post is based on nonsence!!!
As I've said many many times, you have to do it exacly the way I wrote it.
Pro to noob
for your info, I've been using Vista for about two years.
building and flashing ROMs for 3 years now.
I do not argue with possibility to flash ROM in Vista.
I do argue with possibility to use your instruction universaly in all standard Vista installations.
I've seen and tried both possibilities myself.
Universal in boot mode:
"The best driver software for your device is already installed.
Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date.
Uknown Device."
Have you ever seen this message? I doubt.
I've seen that message when you don't do it correctly.
I'm not going to discuss with you if it works or not. And as far as being a pro... been working at microsoft for 6 years. Cheers mate! and good luck flashing building or whatever it is that you do.
Nonesence Again.

I was using vista since beta1, and i have been using WMDC since its beta stages. And i do have to confirm the method with updating your drivers with AS ones works Perfectly. Try again, but dont search for drivers, update it manualy, AND, dont forget to untick ALLOW USB CONNECTION in WMDC before pluging in a bootloaded device. That really does work a charm.
But what about Vista 64 version? This driver don't want to install on Vista 64...

REQUEST PLEASE: HSPL.cab

I am really looking for a HSPL.cab if one exists anywhere, if not i would be grateful if someone (more clever-a than me) could make one.
Apart from the options of installing away from PCs I dont actually use windows / activesync on any of my machines (they are all linux), and as such I am pretty limited without .cab installs.
Thanks for the help, heres hoping!
You can install VirtualBox @ your distro and map USB port do Virtual Machine running Windows XP and ActiveSync.
Regards,
True, but its a fair amount of effort to go through just to get 1 app on my fone for this one time. I also was hoping a .cab might be useful for a few other people.
If there isnt the interest i guess i will have to go down he virtual box route and dig out my old windows xp cds.

Its not an 'app' and you certainly cant install it via a cab. It can only be done via the methods explained in my flashing thread and can only be done via activesync (windows xp or windows7 32bit preferred).
If you cant manage to do it that way then im afraid you cant install HardSPL.
The effort is well worth it if you want to be able to protect your phone and want to flash custom roms

Nice idea, sadly it hangs/stops working just after the phone restarts to the bootloader screen. I guess it could have been worse, it could have hung about 1min in to the instal and bricked my phone.
I think im going to have to resort to using windows this once.

Flashing with Odin in Virtualbox / Linux : works really well !

Hello folks.
I'm working on custom kernel & ramdisk on Linux and was tired to plug/deplug the phone from my Linux workstation to a Windows netbook to flash it...
..Before I realized that Odin works perfectly well on a XP VM on a Ubuntu 10.4 host / Linux 2.6.35.2 !
Big bonus of this setup is that the software virtual USB switch allow you to plug/deplug the phone without touching any hardware.
Odin re-discover the phone and you can flash next millisecond
PS : this has maybe already has been reported, but I know few people who thought it did not work.
I never had any issues flashing my old Hermes through a VM XP machine on my hackingtosh back in the day, as long as I selected the correct USB port to stop OSX trying to grab hold of it.
Not quite "off topic" but thought it would put a few minds at rest

I thought that Vmware was better than VirtualBox for USB tweaks, maybe this is history !
Tell us aware of your tests on Mac
In download mode, SGS appears as Gadget Serial [021B] in VirutalBox.
Pretty good news, I should really clean the dust off my XP virtual machine!
Is Samsung Kies working too?
VMWare 7 in Ubuntu is fine too...

Thanks for your feedback! I replaced VMWare with VirtualBox many years ago and this kind of issues was the main reason, you should stick to VirtualBox!
Can someone tell me how to prevent my mac to grab my phone on usb? I always get an error from my virtualbox, thay device is used by someone else.

Can't get the Galaxy S i9000 to connect to VirtualBox either.

After that, sometimes the phone still appears as available to connect, others it doesn't. Very similar to the VMWare problem.
This is on my Late 2009 MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard. Doesn't matter which USB port I select. I might try a powered hub in between the phone and the laptop. Connecting the SGS to the laptop USB is always a bit of hit and miss for both adb sessions and even mounting the sdcards. I frequently have to unlplug and replug the phone to get a connection. I've seen a few others report the same.
Must be an issue with OS X itself, but to make sure I'll have to try this on my Mac Pro desktop.
I'll report back any success, but I'm not hopeful, I've yet to read a report of someone successfully using Odin in a vm on a Mac.
I'll pile on with my test results. Thus far, under Mac OS X 10.6.4, I have not successfully connected the Vibrant to a VM USB in any Windows virtual machine with the Samsung USB drivers installed. I tried vmware fusion 3.1.1 and the latest virtualbox, 3.2.8. Both failed to recognize the phone when attempting to mount it. No issues in the Mac host environment or Bootcamp. The problem is limited to the VM environments under the Mac host environment.
If anyone has successfully connected the Vibrant to a Windows virtual machine running under vmware fusion or virtual box for Mac please report your results. I did quite a bit of searching and found no successful results with this combo. Thanks.

Appears to be a lost cause for Mac owners who won't boot camp.

This is exciting.
this thread is definitely NOT what I had hoped to find after trying to use odin under VMWare/Win7 (MBP 2009)
I'll report back if I figure out anything. I've had similar battles with activesync/WMC under VMWare as well, and I've got things playing nice after some tinkering
Was a little worried about using virtual machines to flash my favorite toy, but this thread was the push I needed to give it a shot. Plus, seems like there's a fix to get out of almost any brick you manage to install on your phone, even if you have to build a JIG its not expensive.
So gave it a shot and it worked like a charm, Mint/Ubuntu 10.10 host using Virtualbox. One less reason to ever use Windows 7. Even when I don't boot it Windows breaks, I swear its a scheme to keep people who fix Microsoft products employed......
Supercurio that mean "Odin in Recovery" ? or im think in a false way? to flash tar files in recovery..

Wow, you might become an archaelogist if you managed to bring back this thread from the ashes! We now have Heimdall, which is GNU/Linux native. Give that a shot.
I ever used Odin in a VM of Windows 7 over Ubuntu 11.04.
Heimdall is only for 64bit system and i user a 32bit version.. so...
But..Every flashed i did went good

Update firmware via Mac?

How do I update my vega from v 1.06.5 to v 1.08 on a Mac?
I don't want a windows solution like boot camp etc.
Any ideas please?
Mate i could only do it by getting Parallels 2 for my mac, then putting windows XP on it. Fairly painless process pretty much does it all for you... if you've got 2 screens its ace to have mac and xp side by side! just means you can just bob straight to the website and get the .exe and install it

you can also try the mcr r8 rom (available at modaco)
it's an enhanced version of stock 1.08, comes with a 1 click install script for windows, linux, and mac, and doesn't require any specific base-rom to be installed first.
all it needs is USB-debugging mode working.

Heimdall not working.... help!

Hello, I'm a Mac user who has no access to a Windows computer whatsoever and is stuck on the DK28 modem. Whenever I try to flash anything or use any command in Heimdall, it says "Failed to detect compatible device." I've used all the usb cables I have, all of them work when the phone is on but not in download mode. I have no idea what's wrong. Please help!
I have successfully used it on an linux machine. I had to get the libusb-1.0 library though.
I have no idea about Mac though.

Heimdall for Mac doesn't work with the Epic. Samsung has to update something in the SBL to make it work. Heimdall does, however, work perfectly on Linux and Windows. Any chance you could use a friends computer or perhaps one at the library?

Unfortunately no. The phone (in download mode) is totally undetectable by OS X's kernel. Even virtual machines running on OS X can't see the phone. You'll have to use a livecd or bootcamp.
You could also do what I do and setup your Mac to dual boot. I keep Windows 7 on mine for just these occasions such as Epic modding
