New Xperia Videos - XPERIA X1 General

Hi,
Here are a couple of new Xperia videos...
Old Links
Sony xperia - First Look Preview (Small one, but he loads a panel and it instantly shows... also switching panel mode is really fast too...!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sus2l7mq6o
Xperia X1 Google Maps and GPS Possibilities
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ox9GB88cMb8
X1 Panels (Tad bit slow in going from landscape to portrait mode, but just a tad bit - for Panels only [i.e. he switches when showing all panels, their animation has a very slight lag, but overall extremely fast!])
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9R49vsOULU8
Xperia X1 Camera UI (Someone should have told him to stand somewhere not too bright - but hey, he took the effort in making these videos, so Bravo!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3NTogmVuzY
Xperia X1 Illumination possibilities (better than just leaving ur phone to vibrate)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQXSM8S1ryw
Xperia X1 Musicplayer (Loving it! Though its too bright again in this one, but if you look close, you can see animating music symbols on the background of the music player... looks cool)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1RneuMwVcM
Xperia X1 Internet Browsing (Caution! Switching to landscape in this one - and it is fast!)

(I for one will most likely be using Opera instead of IE...

(These sets of vids are the first real in-depth [well somewhat] videos presented by Sony Ericsson itself. Switching from portrait to landscape is fast... one thing to note however is the panel load time for some panels - which can take second or two to load up and refresh - however not a huge concern, especially when my iPhon takes a couple of seconds to load some of its basic stuff especially the Settings page!)

Best Regards.

Cheers! Just making my way through them now, the first one certainly makes the UI look pretty snappy.
EDIT: Why did they have to waste time browsing with PIE at all? Loved the speed of the UI orientation switching there though.
The panels video was OK, the speed and choppiness of the animation when it switches is a bit off-putting, but I hope you can turn that off and just have it switch without pointless eye-candy.
Music player looks nice, finger-friendly which is super important (although it eventually dumps you into WMP, which is less finger-friendly - wish they had their own player too, like the Touch Pro - wonder if a registry entry can have it point to Coreplayer or something else). Hope you can just have a panel that goes straight to the music player though, without needing to select it from the list. No worries though - I expect custom panels will come pretty fast once this gets out there.
Really liking the look of the camera app UI. The Touch Pro camera and UI are both rather rubbish, it would be nice to get a better camera (thing I miss the most from my N82).
GPS performance looks acceptable, although no idea whether that it a cold lock or not.

Did he have a lock at all? Beeline GPS showed nothing. I think that was just the quick google maps "my location", but he had no cell signal either. Maybe beeline was just not configured correctly to use the GPS.

Yep... loved the orientation switching. I wish microsoft would release a new version of IE for windows mobile soon... Thankfully we have opera in this...

Yeah, GPS went active in Google Maps at the end.

New vids added to the list...

My god... the way he was hitting the screen, i hate that Magnus guy
Still seems laggy when loading the panels, though.

Most of the panels load quick (the panel goes up pretty quick, but some of the quick-launch/shortcuts come up delayed) except the media player one, but not that slow, if you ask me.
And yeah... i really hate that Magnus guy too. Why can't SE find a decent guy who knows how to present something in a good manner. (on the contrary, his fish panel one was pretty amusing - especially the way he was hitting the screen )

Never had a touch screen device before (except a Palm), but in my understanding you should be more careful with the screen

My iPhone's screen got crushed - kind of like a windscreen when you take a baseball bat to it - in an accident that i had 3 months back. I got out of the hospital a month later and checked how much it'll cost to get it repaired, and the price in Pakistani Ruppee equals $200! Completely insane!!!
It still worked flawlessly though...

"Cannot play media. Sorry, this media is not available in your territory."
It says on the page; Spencer Kelly tries out the new Google Android mobile, sizes up the Sony-Ericsson Xperia X1 smartphone running on Windows, and the new LG Renoir. Anyone who has seen it, can you tell how exactly do they size it up against Xperia? (but only if its anything other than 'Xperia has Windows at its base' with a smirk on their faces)
To me the G1 lacks a lot of things, but most of all, it looks UgLy! (well ok, not that ugly, but still BLEH!)
It lacks a couple of very important features, but for me the most important being Microsoft Exchange Support, and an office suite fully compatible with Office 2007.

The screen is definitely better than one would expect it to be. I dropped it a couple of times without anything happening to it - the accident had to affect the screen 'cos i literally flew into the air after impact and fell on the same side where i had the mobile in my pocket... OUCH!
There's no trouble getting the screen repaired... i'll just have to put down $150-200 for it...
Funny thing is that even with the broken screen, i can sell it off for a decent price. (but am thinking of keeping it as an iPod touch instead after getting the screen repaired - am waiting for the screen price to drop down a little - as there are some really cool games on it... )

Sony Ericsson 15th Sept Webcast Event

just in case you guys are interested
there supposed to be giving a live webcast about the X1 today at around 1 PST
here is the link
http://www.sonyericsson.com/premiere/
i'm goin to try listen in and see what happens.
Seems i've missed it...
Gonna wait for the recording.
God, won't september 30th come already?
I watched this event and have to say I was incredibly disappointed by it. The phone that Magnus was using was so ridiculously slow that I thought it was actually broken. Really. He had a panel that looked fairly customised with the usual array of time/weather/shortcuts/calendar etc and when he opened the keyboard there was about 3 seconds of delay before the screen rotated. However, it didn't stop there. It only redrew most of the screen. It took over 10 seconds for the phone to redraw the icons in landscape mode. How can this possibly be acceptable? 10 seconds?!!? magnus said he had been using this phone as his personal phone for nearly a year and he said he loved it. How many times has he switched from landscape/portrait and wasted 10 seconds of his life waiting for his phone to catch up.
Further to that, the whole thing seemed ridiculously laggy. He covered it up very well by pressing a button and then talking about the feature whilst waiting for it to load. It was painfully obvious though to anyone in the know what was really going on.
I have seen the recent video on theunwired and the screen rotation looks very fast, which is excellent. But perhaps when you have a more heavily loaded panel that fast screen rotation becomes a thing of the past? Also disappointing was the lack of accelerometer.
I was so keen for the X1 but that was 9 months ago. Now I'm going to wait another month or two and get the Touch HD. It lacks the keyboard, but I'll learn to live without.
screen lag
Also saw what you did, but he came on a chat at Modaco afterwards and said that he had a lot of apps open; which could be true...did you see how fast Google Maps came up? Each panel is it's own desktop and programs on it keep running, bound to be a memory hog. He was supposed to be using a retail version also, so should be as fast as the unit at The::Unwired.
To be honest, I never have been happy with my TyTn II for the screen rotation, and looking at video of the Touch Pro it doesn't seem much faster.
Maybe if you set the task manager to close apps when you switch away?
I've just rewatched it and it actually took 16 seconds to rotate the screen at one point!!! Surely that's not acceptable, even if there are plenty of apps running. A device can be made smarter than that with more efficient code.
i didn't get a chance to watch but i dunno i had a lot of really high hopes for this phone but it looks like i might be leaning more towards a touch pro but we'll see how long my wizard holds up before i make decisions about what to do
Webcast
For those who miss it, you can watch it @:-

There is another (GREAT!) review from Arne available:
http://www.theunwired.net/?item=videoview-hands-on-with-sony-ericsson-s-latest-xperia-x1-built
As you can see, the switching of orientation is very fast in all examples in this video (today screen, photo browser and opera). The LEDs are amazing and the whole device makes a very good impression to me. I also like the "moving slideshow" feature.
It's quite responsive and even the panels pop up in time.
If the reception quality is also good then this will be definitely my next device.

yep just watched it and I must say it does give it more justice, I'm back to waiting for the release so a proper comparision can happen.
Well the suit guy (what a douchebag...) did say that he has been using THAT device since february, so it's probably some alpha version of the device
While the other video it's the almost release beta version.
I still think the device that modaco have done a small video review of is too slow. I mean, surely we're past the stage where we have to wait for things to happen. I don't want a phone that you press a button then wait for something to happen, or open the keyboard and wait for the screen to redraw. The first Diamond roms were a fairly slow, and after updating mine it was much better, so perhaps something like that will occur with the xperia. If not, I'll be glossing over this sexy device!

i know if i had be using my phone for that long with out any backups or a new rom update my phone would have probably been as slow as that also
given that he's not a romhead like us if you don't know what to do with it you'll just let it be unlike us rom start running slow we flash it with something new with the quickness
I'm incredibly disappointed.
Response time for screen switching was a joke ... I've never had an issue with my TyTN or TyTNII ... even though I know some have ... but it was several seconds on the X1 in the video. Also it then seemed to take another 10 seconds to finish populating the screen with icons. The guy then left it open which suggests to me he didn't want to draw too much attention to the time it took.
They were reluctant to answer most technical questions and skirted over the ... it doesn't have tv out one. I was also amazed no one commented on 30FPS performance issues ... I watched the recorded one. I suspect they avoided any difficult incoming questions.
My gut feel is that this will be a very poor showing in it's initial release and if the P series are anything to go by ... updates fixing issues will be few and far between.
This was looking like a dream phone for me ... but now I'm not prepared to buy without trying first hand.
The TouchPro isn't enough of a jump over the TyTN II - same rubbish stills and video and no extra width to the screen ... 800x480 is native for most websites ... so the extra resolution for WVGA makes far more sense than VGA and the G900 showed me there were no issues with apps.
The Touch HD excited me ... and I thought I may get away without the keyboard ... but it also worries me in too many areas ... the first ... although it is 5mp ... the lens is no where as big as the N95 and therefore won't get enough light in to produce decent pictures ... and video is still QVGA which is just crazy for a modern high end device ... it's a little like bring out a car today with a 3 speed auto ... it was fine in '78 with a big old Ford Essex ... but not today. There are also many unanswered questions - Is there TV-Out or not ? How will games be played or those apps that rely today on the dpad - many today screens like Breeze etc ? The touch sensitive buttons ... if they are like the Samsung's we will all be closing calls with out cheeks mid conversation and dialing people when we just pick up the phone to move it.
Why can't these designers think a little. The capability of these phone is amazing now ... but they always miss out those essential things that make a device genuinely complete ... and I don't think it is to hold options for future devices, I just don't think the designers really think things through.
I feel .... very frustrated.
It is always amusing to read the bad and good feelings of all of you here without having one in your own hand. All pre-series and not one of the sold version.
I don't mind this all. I took a great risk to buy the Toshiba G900 with all the bad experiances written about (and the first rom might have been very poor). And what did happen? The G900 is the best manufactured PPC I ever had -best build quality ever seen. With its high resolution it is not slower than my TytnI before. And there you had to wait a good time switching portrait- to landscape-mode.
I am sure the X1 will not only give his owner a very unique design feeling but a good basic to work with. There may be faster PPC, there may be PPC with other features. But most people will buy it in cause of the large screen offering so much more than just 2,8" vga
Buying the X1 will mean not to take the most advantage with games, but texts, internet or similar. Just where the screen has its best sites
if i know htc there will be a Touch HD pro with slide out keyboard after Touch HD

New UK HD Owner Views (from an iPhone owner :-) LONG MESSAGE

I have had my 3G iphone for about 6-7 months now, and have in that time tried several new phones, namely Nokia E71, Diamond (horrible), X1 (lasted less than 1 day!) and I also own a Trinity.
Anyway, the HD arrived via www.devicewire.co.uk in the UK (doh) on Thursday last week, and I powered it up right away. It was £522 delivered.
I think in the UK, people are better off ordering online, since you have the 7 day DSR (Distance Sellings Regs) to fall back on in the event of dislike, dead pixels etc.
With the HD, I am surprised how much I like it..........put it this way, it came Thursday, and Friday it was a case of "yes, this is good, but nothing much better than the iPhone, so I can not justify the cost, so back it goes".....read on for what happened next
I even have the return code from devicewire (very good aftersales, even when you are returning stuff!!)
I can not say the HD screen blew me away, since the screen on the iPhone is a truly, truly lovely screen anyway, and I had been using this everyday for the aforemention 6-7 months.....but, for anyone who has not been using an iPhone, the screen is gonna make you do a double take. It is clear, big, bright and the fonts look amazing.
First thing I did was switch off the ambient sensor (yes, it does have one!), and put brightness up to full, I love contrast as my eyesight is not so good these days.
Now, this is why the iPhone has been so good for me, (although I guess most of you lot here will be younger with perfect vision), I find it has good large fonts, and great contrast.
Compare this to the default text size on the Diamond, or indeed the latest Sony X1, its tiny, and yes, I do know you can altertext size, but on a small screen, it just means you get less on a sreen and have to be scrolling all the time.
The HD is just perfect for me, nice big fonts, so smooth, and perfectly usable with either a finger, (even with a glove on, something that is not possible on iPhone), or a stylus, which as it turns the HD on, is handy to have.
So, the screen is as good as the iPhone, with better resolution, and as I just read in the Slashgear review, the actual touching of the two screens is very close indeed. Even coming from several hours use of the iPhone eveyday, I do feel that I will get on with the HD screen very nicely.
But hang on, I am not keeping this am I, I already have the return code and devicewire are expecting it back......well, I doubt it now.......I had put it all away very carefully on Friday, but it sat there looking at me, and I kept reading about it on here........it was all too much, got up this morning and thought "lets take it to work, Sunday is quiet usually, I can have a play".
Well, the breakthrough for me was to turn off Touchflo and install PocketPlus, a great piece of software I have used on many devices. Oh, that and TomTom 6 running in landscape on the trip to work
As for GPS lag, it is only about 10 miles to my workplace, but there is little or no lag present in TomTom 6.
TomTom is a big deal for me, I find nothing touches it, and it is a great disapointment that there is still no TomTom (or anything else!) for the iPhone, when you recall the stories that TomTom already had it running back at the 3G launch, it must be Apple who are blocking its release.....
I think Touchflo is just too "black" for me, not sure if it will run with a brighter skin or not, but I like the way PocketPlus makes a device look, much brighter.
Now, a lot has been written about WM 6.1 being hard to use without D-Pad? The only issue (apart from games which I confess is of zero concern to me) is for selecting little drop down (roll out) menus, and that is sorted with AEBPlus http://ae.inc.ru/aebplus.php which allows you to assign the volume up and down keys to act as Arrow Up and Arrow Down, and this sorts it and works well.
I can confirm the UK HD comes with the little soft case (its quite nice actually), but a word of warning, do NOT assume all iPhone cases will work, my one, and nice Marware slip case is too tight, and the HD is a smidgen wider that the iPhone. Anyway, I like the softcase. It was also nice to get the 8gb Micro SD card. I have not installed the screen protector yet, can never really get on with those anyway.
Keyboard use on the iPhone is pretty good, and I was very doubtful that HTC could get anywhere near it, but they have basically cracked it IMV. The buttons are the same size as iPhone and easy to use. I am making less mistakes in a few hours than I do after 6 months on iPhone.
Web browsing is not in my opinion as good as the iPhone, well, let me qualify that. If you just use fingers, the iPhone wins, but if you use fingers and the stylus, I think the HD then just shades it.
One very welcome side effect of returning to WM is the multitasking, this is one massive issue for us geeks on the iPhone, combined with the lack of cut n paste, it really shows the two devices quite far apart in usability.
Email is very good on the iPhone, and if you only have the one account (gmail for example) it takes some beating for simplicity. However, the HD also does a great job, and with a little wireless keyboard (impossible on iPhone), I think it will make a good laptop replacement)
RSS is OK on the iPhone, but much easier on the HD, with the built in RSS Hub program, which downloads all feeds, including video feeds. I like to watch Cali Lewis on Geekbrief www.geekbrief.tv everyday, and you have to jailbreak the iPhone to be able to do that (yes, I do know its coming in 2.2 software, but with a limit of 10mb over cellular, which renders it useless for video podcasts, and anyway, its a pain in the arse to upgrade iPhone and then have to jailbreak each time.
We are good at making our decisions fit the case, so the iPhone user is always going to say "oh, I don't really miss cut n paste", when in fact, you quickly forget how often it is useful.
I think for me, it comes down to this, the HTC Touch HD can do everything the iPhone can do and lots more, but the the iPhone can not do several things the HD can do. Does that make sense?
I hope this view (not a review IMHO), helps some of you, and just like the chap in the other thread, please feel free to ask any specific questions about useabilty, although please don't ask me to run x test on y video, using xx program while standing in a bucket of water, as I probably can not be bothered
A couple of program I will miss if I sell the iPhone are TV Plus, a great APP which gives a 7 day EPG and more inportantly, links to Sky Plus (UK only) and lets you setup recordings.
I will also greatly miss Remote, an Apple APP which controls iTunes on my main desktop PC, although I should be getting up off my butt to change charge anyway.
So, who wants to buy an iPhone ;-)
Kev
So font size was your only problem with the Xperia? I'm trying to decide between the Xperia (had it for about 5 days now) and the HD.
BTW, my other phone is an iPhone 2G and I do like the screen.
Whoops, forgot that bit.
No, I got the X1 in the UK at Vodafone (if anyone is interested they are £500 are are not locked to Voda.....well, my one was not anyway)
The fonts were always gonna be too small for me, but I hated the keyboard, the keys barely protrude over the case, very little feedback.
But the killer and reason for return within a few hours for refund was a horribly wobbly screen, but I accept this could have been my one.
Also, given that you would have to use on screen keypad to dial people, it was too fiddly, too small. That 3" screen is very narrow you know.
Sorry.
Kev
I bet there's a program on WinMo that let's you control not only your iTunes but your whole PC. On my current 4 years old Nokia, there's System Freak, that lets you do that...
Thanks for that post KevWright.
Like VeloAudio, I'm deciding between the Touch HD and X1. I still have some niggling concerns about the Touch HD but I am assuming the X1 has the same 'problems' or 'complications' so am leaning towards the former.
Your post bolsters the case.
Great post!
Can you delve a little bit deeper into the screen responsiveness please? Just a few more sentences on how it compares to the iPhone's would be great.
Also, this is probably unbelievably subjective, but which phone do you find sexier? For instance, you are on the bus and you take out your iPhone and you take out your HD, which feels sexier?
Thanks.

You might be interested in a SlingBox, which allows you to stream and your own Sat/IPTV etc. over the web to your laptop or your WM device. It comes with software to control the IR on your video sources. I stream Bluewin IPTV and Sky to the SlingMobile software on my Trinity and intend to do the same with the HD tomorrow when it arrives. I hope it runs on the HD. I will report back later on that.

From what I've read elsewhere, the Touch HD doesn't have an IR port, so you won't be able to use the IR functionality of Slingbox unless you mean the "box" itself attached to a TV?

Well, it is hard to say that much more, I have them both here and am playing now. Not sure if you know the iPhone, but on 2.1 software (jailbroken), when you press the button for say SMS, there is about a 2 sec delay while it loads up, now on the HD, its about the same, but on the HD if you leave messaging running in the background (which I suspect you can do with these better memory equipped models?) it is instant, with the iPhone you always get the delay cos nothing (well except the music player) is allowed to stay in background.
OK, using book reading software, I would say they are almost equal.........maybe the iPhone is fractionally better, or it could be I am more used to it.
As to your second point, I can't help mate, for one, I only have a vague idea of what a "bus" is, and the day I find either the iPhone or the HD "sexy", that is the day I go back to my Nokia 6310 )
OK, I think they look so similar mate, there is nothing in it.

Hi, I do have Slingbox, and have even register Slingplayer, but I just have never had good perfomance on it to be honest. I am not realy fussed about watching TV on my HD, just this little app was great to tell my Sky box to record something, mainly cos it enabled you to do it even without turning the TV and Sky box on.

nokia e71 vs. htc touch diamond
hi kevwright,
after a bad experience with an htc diamond (very poor battery and many ROM updates), I've decided to go for nokia e71. Now I'm considering an htc touch hd, but I'm very curios about it's battery life. how the touch hd compare to the e71 in terms of battery life and general?
in call recording
Hi alll - I have posted a separate thread on this issue, but alas, I thought i would also ask it here from those that already have an HD.
in call recording feature - anyone tried it out? some are reporting that it doesn't work...even though HTC calls it out in their specs online.
can anyone kindly shed some real world experience w/this feature on teh HD?
Thanks in advance.
Someone tell this guy how paragraphs work...
Great post.. I allready bought Touch HD, and I have the same view as you!
Cheers!
Thanks for the insight, kev. Great post.

hi kevwright,
after a bad experience with an htc diamond (very poor battery and many ROM updates), I've decided to go for nokia e71. Now I'm considering an htc touch hd, but I'm very curios about it's battery life. how the touch hd compare to the e71 in terms of battery life and general?

Battery life looks like it will be quite good, but not as good as an E71 (screen is tiny!).
Had it only a day really, so I will update this in a few days.

Touch Pro to X1 ??

I posted a similar thread on the Touch Pro forum and had no real answers so will ask the question here.
Are there any people here who had a Touch Pro and moved over to the X1 ??
I am getting very close to ditching my Touch Pro as it is simply not a usable business tool. It is a nice toy and asthetically pleasing, but as a tool to use everyday for 100+ emails and phone calls, it is unacceptable.
I want to stay on a WinMo platform and will probably go back to my old TyTn2 - the best phone I have ever owned in my opinion - but what are the real experiences of X1 owners who use their device as an everyday tool ??
Thanks
Steven
I have them both and I am selling the Touch Pro. I will write more on my reasons later when I have more time...
Cool thanks - I would be interested to hear your summary.
Drop me a PM if you don't want to publish on the forum
I've owned both the touch pro and the xperia x1. Its kinda of a hard to say one is better than the other. I can give you the pros and cons of both and tell you why i kept the xperia and sold the touch pro.
Xperia Pros
-Fast rotations speed (fastest i've ever seen on a winmo device)
-3.5mm headphone jack
-800x480 resolution (both a pro and a con)
-recessed screen which means its hard to scratch when you lay it on a desk or something
-more responsive touch screen
-sleeker design
Xperia Cons
-Worthless panels
-one of the worst keyboards i've ever used
-slightly buggy but you can counteract that with a new rom
-stupidly placed speaker (its at the bottom of the device basically right where you would hold it with ur hand)
-Weak speaker
-Not sure if anyone else notices this but when run coreplayer for an extended period of time the video generation slows down on the device and requires a restart.
-WVGA screen has some compatibility issues but those seem to be being worked fairly quickly
Touch Pro Pros
-One of the greatest keyboards i've ever used (AT&T screwed up the key layoud in my opinion)
-I prefer the more square screen instead of the wvga
-magnetic stylus is nice
-less buggy tfl3d and overall as well
-Accelerometer (Nice but useless)
Touch Pro Cons
-slow rotations screen
-tfl3d landscape is crap
-no 3.5mm headphone jack
-non recessed screen, much easier to scratch
The reason i kept the xperia was purely because of the rotation speed and the 3.5mm headphone jack. It can use tfl3d from the touch hd and it seems to run it smoother. I do miss my touch pro keyboard though.
I hope this helps
Hah, I had HTC in my hands, now I own X1.
I would add - I love panels, and don't like useless - for me! - TouchFlo.
Some good points on the post above.
One main thing missing though is the build quality. Xperia feels hands down better opposed to the the Pro and its plastic feel. I honestly felt that the Pro is going to be in 2 pcs in 6 months.
Panels are useless to me to, but that is no issue since Im running a rom where panels have been removed... Software things are not issues IMHO, everyone can install what they want by installing a clean rom.
The screen on the Xperia... WHAAAAAT!!! is 100 times better than the screen on Touch Pro. Not only the obvious more pixels but the responsiveness... much better feel all around. I used my Pro yesterday to get it ready for sale and really, it felt like Im using a device from year ago because the screen on the X1 has so much more pixels and is so much better in feel too...
The joystick on Xperia is much better and useful than the wheel on Pro.
Xperia has the soft buttons opposed to the stupid homekey on Pro. (Pressing OK takes you home)
Basically 2 things are better on the Pro:
1. The keyboard... But now that I got used to the Xperia's board I actually like its feel more. Its missing the number row and CTRL key (what you can get by nice little app found from the board)
2. stronger community behind the device, because lets face it, ALL HTC PHONES WOULD BE PRETTY ****T WITHOUT XDA... But there are still bugs on the Pro too, and if you compare Touch Pro's community to Diamonds; its no contest, so much more users on Diamond.
Thats the reason we got the Xperia to dutty, I honestly think he can take this device a step further. Also by time as X1 gets cheaper more users will find Xperia the more it will be developed. (NOT BY HTC, BUT THE MEMBERS OF XDA DOING IT FOR FREE FOR THEM)
I think thats enough for now... I can write more as something comes to mind...

Yea i completely spaced on the build quality. You are right its 10000000000x better. Excellent Points.
Yeah, the build quality feel could be compared to the difference when I got the Kaiser after TyTN...
When you close the Pro you hear a "klonk", but on the X1 its more like "snap"
I think Xperia would be the ultimate WinMo device if we would get more of the greatest cooks to the device.
But also you see some of these things are a based on opinions and can be different for you, i.e. I prefer the joystick over the wheel...
One thing also is that using Touch Pro in landscape on a table is impossible...
X1 all the way

my two pennies... (pun intended)
The points above are well thought of and I completly agree...
1. Yes the build quality in touch pro was pathetic, I could hear a buzzing noise (by the hardware) when am on call. If i press it against my ears hard, it would stop. This was driving me crazy. But this could be one off
2. The Pro is a finger print magnet. I would constantly keep cleaning it (would look dirty all the time). The x1 looks and feels sexy
3. Touch Pro has got UMTS(850), which would be a deal breaker if you are in the states and your city doesn't have 1900. Also i could see a diff in signal strength inside my office. But this could be a radio issue or I might just be imagining it. Never had these side by side to give you a concrete answer
4. Yup the keyboard in pro is far better, but once i got used to x1's keyboard am not complaining.
5. All the sensors in Pro are simply amazing and couple that with Gyrator you can do simple anything. The stylus sensor is pretty cool and so are the touch sensitive buttons. Esp, zooming in Opera is priceless.
5. The two things that put me off X1 is the lack of custom ROMs and support here. Next is the stupid speaker, if u hold it in one had; you can be 100% sure that I won't hear it
6. Also I have the iPhone, comparing the accessory i get for that, x1 is pathetic. I couldn't even get a decent pocket pouch.
Over all you can't go wrong with either one. But if the small screen is hurting ur experience with the pro then x1 is definitely better. And with Dutty coming to X1, rest assured u gona have a blazing ROM
Finally I couldn’t get the point you were trying to make, if you didn’t like Pro as a tool then what’s so good about Tilt? If you answer that question we could give you a concrete answer.
Note:- I have the TyTn, Tilt, iPhone, G1 and the X1 (exchanged it for the Pro, which was exchanged for the Diamond)
Few more:
1. When talking long calls TP gets really hot (build quality issue)
2. Xperia has much better battery life (at least at my location)

The joystick on on X1 is touch sensitive... Scrolling through emails or navigating in menus by swiping your finger I find it much better over the wheel... On wheel you have 2 directions, on the pad 4...
+ I went back on using the Opera Mini 4 over the Opera Mobile 9.5, because mini is still the best and the fastest browser...
I agree on both points again I might have to try Opera Mini 4 on my Xperia.

I owned the TP (EU version on US ATT) first. Then I got the X1 (EU SILVER also on US ATT). Then I went back to the TP.
After going to the X1, I thought I would NEVER return to the TP but plain and simple it was the POOR BUILD QUALITY OF THE X1 SILVER that turned me off!! See the VERY FIRST thread in this forum about Cracks in the Case! My X1 Silver had cracks...felt like it was falling apart before my very eyes.
I know some blame SE, some blame HTC...whatever! I'm back using a TP (ala ATT FUZE) but NOW with 3G/HSDPA and loving it!
Everyone's PROs and CONS are many and very valid...for me, the only way to determine was to try them both!!
-The X1 displayed more brilliant pictures and of course the graphics speed was excellent playing certain games (Quake, etc.) and watching hi-rez movies.
-I do also miss the VGA 30fps video recorder too on the X1. That's all I miss though. These things the TP/FUZE will never have.
Opera Mini 4.2 is amazing browser. Opera Mobile 9.5 too and it supports - some - flash as well as tabbed browsing, better bookmarks handling and txt copy!
As for OMini 4.2, it loads some pages zoomed in without zoomout function, and landscape mode is not supporting it at all.
However is'a great browser AND it saves data, I mean it loads like 1/8 of a real page's size!
Edit: Sorry I read wrong...

yea its 4 way, but you have to do a lot of swiping cos the button is small. In Pro you just move in circles.
Also Pro's wheel is much more accurate, x1's button moves in 2s so its hard to pick in a list.
About the sensors...
I had gyrator pick and drop calls when i pick the mobile and then put it face down. I accept, picking the call wasn't working 100% and you had to check if the call is dropped when u put it down. But man it was cool
Yes, its a toy thing. but for me (as I would believe for most), I love these gadgets cos they are cool toys and not a tool. I would even go to an extent to call iPhone a tool (I know people are going to pounce on this)
But hear me out, with an iPhone i could check the movies (with review and trailers) running and check all the good restaurants (with user reviews and menus) near where I am. Check live soccer scores, get live updates on my bills and utilities to name a few.
Obviously all these can be done on x1/Pro maybe even better but my issue is 1. Its hard to get an application to do these and that with good user friendly UI 2. I need to pay huge money if at all I find one (all the applications I stated are free for iPhone)
This is getting side tracked, all i wanted to say is these are toys unless you have to do something specific that could be done only by a WM.
Some excellent points. Thanks all.
It is not the small screen that is putting me off the Touch Pro - it is simply the worst, most untested bug ridden device I have ever used.
I bought the device - one of the first out in September with an EU ROM. When I first got it it was a little slow but seemed ok.
Then I started to try and buy some properly licenced Sat Nav software for it and choose Co Pilot Live for HTC Touch. I did not have the well documented satellite lock issue but the lag when driving made the device unusable. I was for example at least 100 meters past a junction before I was told to turn.
The delay in the phone ringing means that unless you have the screen in your view an impatient caller will hang up before you can answer.
I have my data connection live all the time to recieve email from my company MS Push Mail server. TF3D often crashes or restarts meaning a soft reset. And the lag in typing a message is often difficult to live with. A soft reset fixes this but it soon comes back
I have tried I imagine all the patches, hacks, fixes, CAB, registry changes, tools recommended on the Raphael forum here but none have cured all my issues enough to make the tool a viable everyday device a la Blackberry (ok I know this is a Windows Mobile device by again, my trusty TyTn2 is rock solid and stable).
I have also gone back to HTC's painfully hopeless support teams who apparently are not aware of any lag or GPS issues with the device.
So know I want to try something else - the Samsung Omnia doesn't cut it for me, so it's either the X1 or the new Palm Treo Pro.
I've got to say that the Omnia can't be compared to the X1,
Omnia doesn't even feel like a phone it's a horrible piece of plastic. The only thing that is interesting is the 5.0 WOW megapixel camera compared to the X1's 3.2
Omnia is the worst Samsung I've ever had.
Horrible screen resolution, to much interface (Samsung's own brew over Windows Mobile) enlarged everthing on the screen (like its made for blind users or something) but the good about that is that is finger friendly.
There is no stylus, you can attach one but it will give your phone nice scratches because its not inside the phone but along like a keycord.
- No stylus
- No 3.5mm jack
- No mini-usb
- No Keyboard
- No tactile directional keys
- Resolution 240×400
- Big screen (Size, not the resolution)
- Finger friendly
- Better optical directional key sensor
- Screen quality (Color & much more brighter and white)
- Slim (because the lack of an keyboard)

opinions

i currently have a kaiser and have being due an upgrade for my o2 staff account for i dont know how long, soooo should i get the x1 its all they can offer me being staff in the line of harware keyboard win mo devices, the o2 xda serra is not yet available to staff i know i can get a better price elsewhere but with my staff account i get cheep bills
So whats it like to use?
is the camera anygood?
and do any emulaters work (i.e. snes, nes, megadrive, psx?)
is the keyboard any good?
thanks i know this is subject to your opinions and you will likely say its great as you own them but i will take all answers with a pinch of salt
btw im due an upgrade on wifes orange in a month maybe the Blackstone? or should i wait for (serra) raphael on o2?
anyone any advice
?
Man read some reviews!
I mean how can I answer??
Hi thanks for replying but i have read reviews but just wondered how people were finding the device now the oww look at this shiny new sony erricson phone phase has worn off........
and most reviews at best compare it to other s/e phones and i know its better than there other smart or regular phones, im a big winmo fan and am looking for a new toy but not sure wanted an idea of someone who has had long term experience non of the reviews state if it runs certain emu's and comparing camera to other phones it will lose due to winmo's lack of decent camera software so if anyone would like to contribute anything of value to this thread?
the only thing that realy sux is the UI. i'd rather had a builtin Touchflo or similar since the manual installed ones have some issues. panels are useless
hardwarewise, great phone.
thanks for the reply
ive done a search about emulators to no success does anyone know which ones work if any?
they all work if u use WVGA fix. but u not goign to be happy with a half used WVGA screen.
beside that, the lack of a keypad makes using an Emu pretty usless since we dont have multitouch
You see, here we start again.
As achmed20 hates panels, I just love them and IMO Touchflo is a crap compared to SE Panels functionality...
i don't hate them! the available panels are all somewhat useless.
media panel and mobileshell are the only useable ones. and i personaly love the media panel. which the whole phone had this UI
the SE panels itself are just useless. Today screen gives somewhat more info then those 2 (well its just 1 basicly)
guess i realy have to code my own shell
but most of the emu's i use auto scale and buttons can be mapped to keyboard (i.e. wasd) thats what i do on my kaiser all the emu's except ps, would display full screen with vga on previous (universal athena) but would not work properly (ie screen rotation, button mapping) so yes the programs will work but if button mapping dosent there is a problem
and as for panels i would probably just disable them if i didnt like them so thats not a problem.
in my experience, the x1 is miles better than the kaiser but not in any groundbreaking ways - it's still winmo 6.1 underneath. it feels more like a normal phone rather than the brick i was used to carrying around. also, it's much snappier. menus and changing orientation is much faster.
i've basically set my x1 up so that it works in exactly the same way as my kaiser (htc home, etc) but it is much more responsive.
it's nice to have panels so that i can run tf3d at the weekend when i don't need access to the familiar elements of the today screen.
other big plusses for me are :
the built-in radio. i use this much more than i thought i would.
the standard headphone socket. not having to look for and worry about the adaptor has made a big difference to me. i use my phone for music a lot more than i used to.
so, basically it's a smaller, faster version of the kaiser for me with a few added bells and whistles.
"is the camera anygood?"
i've never found a cmos camera chip (the ones used in all webcams and phones) to be
any good compared to ccd which is the type used in real digi cams
the colours are never real right
the sensitivity to both dim and light is poor
the time from you press to the picture is taken is too long people go home and when it fires
you're alone and the party is finished ...
but thats not an x1 thing
imho it's the case of all cameras in phones
"and do any emulaters work (i.e. snes, nes, megadrive, psx?)"
they would but some may require wvga fix program to get a res they support
"is the keyboard any good?"
well 10 finger is not really an option as it dont react to 2 press's at once
again this goes for all hardware keyboards not just x1
but the keyboard works fine for my needs
cool well im still not too sure just being looking at the new toshiba winmo phone with a 1GHZ cpu and its so slim and has a nice large screen.. but can i wait for the release in the summer??
If you're after even a half decent camera i'd stay away from the X1. I found the camera to be absolutly useless. The 'flash' is more of a light, and picture quality is very poor. I went from an N82 which has a pretty good camera and xenon flash.
yeah i realy whisch they included the 3.2 Camer out of the K800i. dam that camera did amazing fotos considering it was just a Phone and 3.2 mp.
the 3.2MP processing unit is part of the qualcomm CPU (might be wrong). but that would explain why realy every winmopho creates such ugly pictures.
but to be fair, under daylight conditions the fotos are realy OK.but fear the darkness
my personal reason for teh X1 was the keyboard and the metal look. otherwise i would take the TouchHD (screenwise)

Well actually SE Panels contain just anything I want and collect all the needed apps plus calendar etc. They're highly useful... In opposition to other solutions!
nope! not realy (for me).
what i realy like about touchflo is:
i can read SMS messages directly on screen without opening something (MUST have for me)
way nicer favourites (people)
easy fav application adding and browsing
the Album (even thought it barely works for me)
teh Web panel
the MP3 panel
its basicly like the Panel idea from SE but way better and easier to access.
1 touch, here we go web browsing
another touch, lets view some pictures
yet another touch, and scroll through your fav apps/people

Yeah, exactly great for not-so-heavy usage.
If you really extensivley use some apps it's better to go to them directly.
And ONSCREEN of SE panel you can have just any app with one click, what is easier??

careful there - I'm a semi pro photographer and I own two Canon DSLRs (a 20D and a 5D) and they BOTH use CMOS sensors, as do the new top line Nikons. The 5D is right up there near the top of the image quality tree.
It's more a size of sensor / cheap hardware issue than whether it's CCD or CMOS.
regardless of the above, the camera on the Kaiser is truly awful. Really, really bad. The X1 is a lot better (i may actually keep some of the pics I take on this one!) but still not amazing.
back on topic, I've gone from Kaiser to X1 find the X1 much better to use. I like the panels, although they could be a bit quicker, the call quality is really good compared to so-so on the Kaiser I had, GPS works better and the screen is fantastic. Plus it's smaller and lighter - more like a phone to hold. The keyboard is not for the large of finger though which may or may not be an issue for you. Battery life is better than my Kaiser had too, although I'm really comparing an 18 month old battery to a new one there.....
I like the optical pad as well, once you get used to it it's great. Oh and surfing using Opera is much better than it was with the lower res screen of the Kaiser.
One thing that DOES annoy me on the X1 is the slow video playback at full resolution (i've got to try the new converter out yet). AND the device occasionally locks up for no reason, but it's rare.
btw I loved my Kaiser (my wife has it now) but the X1 is newer, higher spec and generally better in most areas (in MY opinion, that is!)
HTH....

Xperia gripes. Help

I've had my xperia for about 3 days now, using it non-stop at home, on the go, etc.
I'm having a lot of mixed feelings: i like it, and disappointed in it at the same time.
Please enlighten me in each of the following.. help me learn to love the phone instead of regret it.
1) My biggest gripe: The form factor, the thickness, the small touchscreen embedded WITHIN borders as opposed to a front flat. Admit it.. it feels like a brick.
2) Lack of panels.. Lack of applications (look at apple's app store)
3) The responsiveness.. the overall phone is dodgy, menus take seconds to load, camera and its settings are slow, buttons and inputs are not instantaneous... I've an ipod touch for about more then half a year now, those who've experienced with Apple products know what I mean by 'immediate response' (and in NO WAY am i supporting apple, I am just doing this comparison to illustrate the difference of response)
All these gripes i would have set aside if the price tag was about $100 - $200 dollars CHEAPER. When I'm paying so much, I expect something decent :|
Now for my praises:
1) Biggest plus; It has windows live mail, and windows live messenger, something the iPhone will never have.
2) Panels CONCEPT.
3) The beautiful colors (xperia wall)
4) Keypad, lots of control/input: trackpad, d-pad, touchscreen & stylus
If you've read all that, In no way am i critcizing the xperia as a whole. It's my user-preference I speak with and individual opinion. I, for one, am bothered by all the gripes I have mentioned. I've searched for smartphones for a long time now and none has even PEAKED my interest besides the xperia and the iPhone. The problem is that the iPhone is out of the question because I can't get it. So my question is... What should I do? As in should i stay with the xperia, what can I do with the xperia to make me satisfied with it, etc.
Hey,
dude u need to flash a new ROM. Xperia 'out of the box' looks nice but doesn't work as well as it looks. once you've flashed a ROM it works nicer than it looks.
Im using agent_47 ROM...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=512050
admittedly there are a few bugs every now n then but its nothing that eventually won't be fixed.
Dude there are loooaaddss of panels available. just search the forums. there are also loaaadss of apps available...you just have to find them. tomtom7, facebook, skype, super mario just to give some examples.
So in summary, find a ROM that you like and flash it
Adam
Thanks but it doesn't compensate for the fact that the phone is bulky with a screen embedded within borders. Even though the iPhone may be bigger in volume, at least it has a large screen (thats NOT in border) to make up for its size.
My issue is.. i feel no matter what I change about the software and interface, it'd still feel bricky in my hands, when getting a call; trying to touch the tiny buttons on the embedded screen with my thumbs -___-
What other third party panels could possibly benefit me? Aren't most of them just home screens, mobile shell, etc.
Panels I'd like to see include paralelling the apple app store; at least have the defaults like the facebook panel: twitter, youtube, notes, pocketoffice panel, dictionary, games, etc. Funny how advertisements show panels with different colours but none are remotely worthy to be put. I only have about 7 panels, and i even tolerated putting the fish and clock one.
arikado as adam18488 has said you need a new windows mobile rom.
Most of your Points are related to the Software of the Windows Mobile Computer Operating System.
The WinMo ROM that is shiped with X1 has heavy lags with video rendering.
You are not the only one who is disopointed with the OS on X1.
Iphone works out of the box -Apps store has loads and is v easy ...but you can't customise!
Xperia WILL dissapoint out of the box ...you need to make it yours -customise, tweak etc
If you are new at all this ....the last thing you should do is Flash a custom ROM imho
You need to read LOADS and start small with the tweaks
I was underwhelmed when I first got mine ...a couple of weeks of reading and trialling were quite frustrating (without this forum it would have been impossible)
About a month in I got it all set up the way I liked it ...8 months on I still LOVE it and have continued to make small tweaks (including upgrading the stock ROM twice -now on the current R3A & video works flawlessly BTW)
Take a look at threads like "post your today screen" and the like to see how wide the options are
The WIKI is a must, as are most of the Stickies

arikado,
Did you not at least feel the phone in person before buying it? You can't really whine now that you've bought the phone. It was your responsibility as a customer to ensure that everything about the phone met your expectations before you handed over the cash.
Should've done your homework first. If the phone feels like a brick to you, then even the Touch Pro 2 or even the N97 will feel like a brick because those are -huge- phones.
If you don't want a recessed screen, I strongly suggest the TouchHD, that's about it or wait for the next Xperia, or go with the HTC Hero, or HTC Magic.
Cheers.
Yes - we can't help you now with hardware issues. If you don't like the hardware you should not have bought it. Anyway:
If you are a fan of finger UI's then read about Mobile Shell 3.0. It allows you to do almost everything with your finger. There is also a cab available that imrpoves the responsibility :

Here you go: X1 SoftTouch.
Well..there are panels, but you are right - not as much as I would have liked!
And there are apps, but not as much because 800x480 screensize is rather new
to phones. Give them some time.
The "borders" around the screen you are taking about is a negative thing on that phone. But like already mentioned: swop with a Touch HD. It is more likely "your" kind of phone!

1 - I don't mind the thikness, because you get a full keyboard. You can't beat that. The recessed screen is one of my major gripes as well, but it has one (only one lol) good thing going for it - when you drop it, the screen will not get damaged. I admit that it is a brick.
2 - Not true. There are some panels floating around. There are THOUSANDS of apps and games for WinMo and most of them are NOT like these:
http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2009/fortune/0907/gallery.dumbest_iphone_apps.fortune/index.html Just read and search .
3- Everything that you listed can be fixed by custom ROMs or tweaks of the system. My only advice is to read the "sticky" topics and then browse the forum for whatever you want.
My X1 has the regular firmware and is lightning fast thanks to massive tweaking and installing of useful apps.
If you can't find anything using the search function, feel free to ask the helpful people in this forum .
If you want a phone that works fine "out of the box" : got an Iphone but you will never be able to customize it
If you want a bigger screen: Got a Touch HD but no hardware keyboard, screen less responsive (my opinion), not really faster
If you want to keep your Xperia: learn about tweaking and flashing rom
My 2 centimes:
- Yes the firmware is painfully slow. This is really the major limitation of this phone out of the box.
- I have not yet flashed a custom ROM (on R2A) but am very hopeful that this improves the snappiness
- Buy SPB Mobile Shell 3.01. Outstanding software and well worth the price.
- After a couple weeks/months, I think most Xperiites ditch panels because they are slow and a fairly silly idea. Why press three times to run an application when you have the option to press only once?
- The hardware on this phone is superb and I think you will only come to appreciate it more and more. Bricks may not look the best, but they last a helluva long time.
Is it just me or am I the only one getting a bit bored of the iPhone fanboys repeating the "My iPhone/My mate's iPhone/My fashionista's iPhone is great, the X1 is crap, why?" question?
If you don't like it's size and shape, why buy one?
In regards to apps, typing "Windows Mobile Apps" into Google gets approx 292,000,000 results. Yes, a lot of these will be repeated/links to each other, but there are at least a few sites off the top of my head that can provide hundreds of *legally free* apps, let alone several that can provide lots of paid-for ones. "Oh but the Apple Store is one place" yes, we all get all of our purchases from the same shop. Unless you're a Tesco/Walmart fanboy also?
I must admit, it is a bit of a pain getting fluff and dirt out of the corners of the screen, but a lot less of a pain than smashing the screen like several of my iPhone loving mates have, especially on a thin-bodied device which depends on the screen to work...

I didn't see anyone here say that. Post in the wrong thread, maybe?

Nope.
HERE is a possible fix for the screen being pushed into the phone - basicially what i noticed was that when i put a screen protector on it obvoiusly raised the screen so i was thinking - maybe if you put two screen protectors on ! it would be at optimum height! just a thought - i might try it

iPhone is a good phone in its own ways
Xperia is a good phone in its own ways
both have their ups and down and you need to consider which you think best suits you because neither are perfect
I'm just looking at it from a neutral point of view but i'm glad i chose xperia

Agreed, everything is down to personal preference, but the iPhone losers cannot stop claiming that their device is THE BEST!!! It obviously isn't and any objective man comparing it to a normal phone can see that. It is a glorified mp4 player and barely qualifies as a feature phone.
The attitude of being uneducated and tech illiterate, but still claiming that your device is the Jesus phone, is what annoys me.
Especially when people start posting about it at a WINMO forum. WTF seriously? Use it, enjoy it, but don't try to make it something it clearly is not. That is why the apple fanboys irritate me.
End of rant lolz .

Wrong, it feels like a luxury device. Even if the OS was a basic symbian it would still feel grand. Admit it...it feels like it's the ****.
The form factor is perfect. The thickness is actually pretty thin. The touch screen is not satisfactory.
2) Lack of panels.. Lack of applications (look at apple's app store)

Why are you complaining on something that is still being developed? You are one bull****ing fanboy.
Palm Pre > Lack of apps
Android > Lack of tethering @ apps
Apple > Applications are mostly games you turd, and apps are only foreground apps so what is the freaking point?
Look how manys apps that I have for my X1:

I know what you mean, actually. I have to agree on this. Played with my brother's ipod touch.
All these gripes i would have set aside if the price tag was about $100 - $200 dollars CHEAPER. When I'm paying so much, I expect something decent :|

I think the X1 is worth 900 bucks, but I think it is unfair that the X1i version is a lot cheaper. ****ing bull****. Europeans are lucky!
1) Biggest plus; It has windows live mail, and windows live messenger, something the iPhone will never have.

WTF is an Xperia wall... nobody on this forum ever made a reference to an Xperia wall. The colors are okay, the resolution is better. Think people think.
4) Keypad, lots of control/input: trackpad, d-pad, touchscreen & stylus

If you aren't for being organized then get the iPhone...that's all I have to say
Even using apple's software is very inorganized and there is no way for me to mother****ing installed 3rd party schedule applications / alarm applications / automatic profile applications ...so iPhone is just a toy with a lot of games and foreground-only apps.
Xperia keeps me so organized... why? SPB Diary baby. Anyway, just get the Apple because I don't think you're the kind of guy who needs simple features only.
Just listen to me and get the iPhone 3GS and you will be happy.
My most used app is SPB Mobile Shell 3... and AE Button... try them out and it will boost your productivity...
i really loved the batt life of Xperia.. (coming from O2 Atom Life)
