Fix for the Opera 9.5b1 Out of Memory error (mostly) - Mogul, XV6800 General

I wanted to pass on that I've had really good luck with a fix for the OOM issue. I've been able to browse through my twitter page and all of the icons on the side (brianlayman if you want to exchange follows) and then load my replies page and then do the acid test of scrolling around the not-logged-in my.yahoo.com page while it was loading before I got 1 out of memory error. I still need to do more testing and I did get more errors after that point. BUT that still is a VAST improvement over how it worked before.
You could do this through an INI edit, as was suggested on the opera forums, but I did it through browsing to opera:config.
Basically you create a directory on your SD card "\Storage Card\Cache" or something similar, and then change the "Cache directory 4" setting under User Prefs to use that directory instead of your phone memory. Additionally, you should radically increase the size of the cache directory.
I've changed some other things around to try and get improvements too. These include Moving downloads up to the card. I also changed a CachRAM setting and I;m not sure what does... I've even moved the rooot opera directory up to the SD card. It doesn't make the error go away completely, but it is possible to actually USE the browser now.
Any other thoughts on the matter are welcomed.

OOM Opera 9.5 Beta Issue
I'm having the same issue with this version of Opera, but I'm loving (trying) to use it, and it's great until I reproduce this error. Can you give a step by step as to how you changed the config file. I can't even find it on my phone. Thanks

yes please. a step by step walk-through would be greatly appreciated. i had given up on the opera mobile beta, but if you could explain exactly what you did, id love to give it a try. thank you. dschoenike

You have to navigate to "opera:config" in the 9.5 browser and it opens up a SLEW of settings. Very slick way to get into the config and change locally. I think once you have made the updates it'll save to the config file on the phone.

type in opera:config in address bar.
Scroll down to User Pref.
Change Cache Dir.

Correct.
To be clear, I am still getting out of memory errors. But less of them. It depends upon the site I am browsing. I mostly use twitter and brightkite from the phone. Bright kite seems to kick a lot of the errors.

I, too, am getting fewer out-of-memory errors, thanks to these two fixes. But won't our fixes be overwritten each time we load a new beta?

I doubt it, but hopefully with a new beta, this problem will go a away.
If you want to make sure that you keep your changes, backup the \Application Data\Opera 9.5\ folder and you can copy it back on when you want to.

People, get Skyfire and do away with all that confusion!

Have it. Prefer Opera.

opera #1
yea skyfire is alright but it does not support every website like it claims to. I too prefer opera.. when ever it begins to support flash I will remove skyfire.

I made a folder for it on my storage card:
\Storage Card\Opera 9.5 Beta\cache\ it doesn't save it... or goes back to application data (rom)
I renamed it... it changes the directory but when you exit out. It goes back to Application Data..
How do you safe it? Or keep it from changing directories?
Nevermind, I found info here: http://www.wmexperts.com/articles/howto/how_to_move_the_cache_in_opera.html

I'd love to see a version of 9.5 that works with the Mogul, I tried some of the tweaks here with little improvement. Right now, I use mini for general browsing and 8.65 when I need to download something. Skyfire is close to being usable, but it uses too much mem compared to Opera, d/l is all but unusable and it has some interface quirks and slowdowns that make it frustrating to use. 9.5 and Skyfire are still beta's, so there's hope for the future.

i have used the opera beta and liked it i wish it supported flash,
and i have skyfire but i actually missing being able to have multiple tabs

Elf + Opera 9.5 = Low memory issue

Hello,
I'm user of elf (MDA Touch) and I use Onyx 3.0 ROM. When I launch Opera it's ok, but when I use it for about 15 minutes it shows a warning message, that says „the phone is low in storage memory“ or something (i think it means low RAM?). How to solve this issue?
Thanks
I too have opera 9.5. I use both the opera browser, as well as the IE browser (interchangeably). From what I see, whenever you surf web pages that has a lot of content (especially alot of images), the phone stores the data, even after closing the web pages. What I have to constantly keep doing is, delete the history, cookies & cache to free up the space, which eliminates the low memory messages, until the memory gets full again. It seems like after 4 to 5 large web pages, then I get the message of low memory. I sometimes get a critical low message (LOL).
For me, this is a big pain in the butt, and unfortunatly, I don't know any ways around it. Maybe there is a software that can monitor, and maintain a certain amount of space, to prevent this problem from happening; maybe we can start there.
Also maybe someone else could chime in with a solution.
i've seen opera running on both Elf and Elfin... it works without a glitch on the Elfin
but problems appear when i use it on Elf... same memory problems :S
we just need a good application that can free up (a loooott) of RAM...
As far as I have understood it's mainly the cache that eats up your memory. I found a way to store Opera cache on the storage card (well, I found a guide on the internet). It worked great untill I had a couple of tabs open (I guess tabs are stored in phone memory). But it helped a lot storing the cache on the storage card.

naah... tried it... same Low memory problem...
Yes! We need something that could monitor, and delete (if selected) the cache files on the fly (automatically) to maintain a certain amount of memory.

Moving cache to SD won't help much. Main problem is that Opera keeps thumbnail of page and it's full view in RAM. Wait for release of Fennec (Firefox Mobile), maybe it will work better.
Your total solution
I just found this on a thread.
www.skyfire.com
This thing even plays youtube videos directly.
I can play flash games on this browser too

be sure to clear out you text threads the get to big and your phone will act funny also turn your phone of and on every day helps out a lot
Yes, this is most likely a problem with too many text messages. After you get to 200-300, the phone really starts lagging.
Reset those and see how you do.
You should download the app from the market "txtract". It lets you extract your text messages to your sd card so you can delete them from your phone but still keep the ones you want to save.

good advice some people dont want to lose some of there text messages.
yeah, but don't be so hasty to delet your messages until you make sure it's right for you cuz the app has three options of extracting, xml, csv i think and html I extracted it using xml and wasn't too pleased,i haven't tried csv and html ain't avalaible yet
html hasn't been developed, although the option is there...
anyway to delete txt by selecting multiple threads? or do i have to do one by one thread at a time

Hi jkiller,
I noticed that the XML had a bug in it, "not closing the <SMS> tag at the right spot", hence a new release came out right away. Please take a look at that one.
The beauty of XML is that, it can be converted to anything. And it would be so soo cool, if Android had any XSLT support. Now, trying to find a better way around the proper XML -> HTML conversion of the extracted/exported SMS messages.
CSV is "comma separated values", for the ones who might be thinking what the heck is CSV.
hey oz
I checked out the new version but I still have a problem with xml,for some reason it keeps confusing me with another contact,i have the papa johns number o my phone and it confuses some of my text with papa johns lol, plus im pretty new to reading xml format and would like a much simpler way of reading them if Im going to delete them off my phone which I think html mode will be when it comes out, anyway thanks for the update.

Does the same problem exist in the CSV export?
By the way, you can open the XML file in Word. It gives a pretty outline of the document, with opening/closing tags.
I'm trying to mess with my sms db to make a similar situation happen, with no luck so far.
it might not be just the text messages; there are alot of things that can bog down the phones memory:
- Cache especially from browser, youtube, maps, and market
- Applications especially games
Check how much memory you have by going to;
Settings->sd card & phone storage and check internal phone storage
- can see how much space an application takes by going to:
Settings-> application -> manage applications
*press menu to sort by size
you can clear the data of pre installed apps (that came with the phone) like the browser and market
**DONT clear data for myfavs or settings**
* if you have root you can save you browser cache and market cache to sdcard by going to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=443336
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=444294
Is there any way 2 clear market cache ? Reason being I do not have root anymore. Effin rc30... there is no " clear data" in manage applications for market

Maximum File Size Download Limit

Hello Folks,
I've been using my Vogue to do some downloads and have noticed that I cannot download anything much larger than 80MB, even if I have a 2GB SD card and plenty of storage space left. Yesterday I tried to download a file of about 100MB, it appeared to have downloaded to the end, but I got a disk full error message and the file was essentially lost. When I checked my internal memory before clicking the "disk full" dialog box, it was indeed full. However I wasn't able to identify where the file was. I always setup my downloads to go to the storage card.
Is this device limited to download chunks that can fit into its system memory or part of it? In other words, is it possible to force saving files directly onto the storage card instead of system memory like it seems to be doing now? Is this a limitation of the browser (Opera 8.65), of the operating system (WM 6.1) or is this a limitation of the hardware itself (the CDMA version of the HTC Touch, aka the Vogue)?
TIA for your responses!
Don't know. I have not tried downloading a file larger than 10M before. I don't have a data plan plan so anything that I need to download I was my laptop. I seems like downloading a 100M file would be painfully slow using your phone.
I do not think there is a limit. I have DLed 350mb phone sized movies a few times.
I do think your problem is related to the browser? When I try to DL a file off the net through IE it does not ask me where I would like to save the file, (it used to in 6.1, but no longer does in 6.5) and it automatically DLs to My Documents on the phones internal memory. This woul mean I could not DL a file larger then my remaining space that's available. I use Opera Mobile 10 now and it allows me to select my storage card as DL location.
it seems to me that it cache's the file on the phone then copies to the sdcard, i think there is a registry setting somewhere to make it cache it to the sdcard...i would check here at xda or at ppcgeeks.com
jadesse: being on dial-up, that is painfully slow! Getting the unlimited mobile browser was exactly the idea, because until recently there were no other options but dial-up where I live. Even at the edge of the cell, at 300Kb/s to 600Kb/s, my speeds are 5-10 times faster than dial-up... An our new ADSL, that we just got in the area after a 10 year wait, maxes out at 3.5 Mb/s...
skydirt: OK - so if IIUC, you've been able to download 350MB files in one shot, using Opera 10, without getting 'disk full' issues? On the Vogue?
Opera 8.65 does]/i] let me select the storage card as a location. That's what I've been doing all along. I just can't download files of the 100MB or around size or larger. It's as if it was downloading on internal memory then at the end of the download transfering (writing) it to the storage card.
How is Opera 10? Is it as good as Opera 10 for the desktop? Is it stylus friendly? Is it a free upgrade? (never mind, I see it's a beta - it will expire...)
jamezelle: could you be more specific? I've looked into it and there are some edits for temporary IE files location, which I will try. However, this is only applicable to IE... I will test both this tweak on IE and see whether Opera Mobile has some similar setting... Thanks for the tip!
Thanks for all your responses, folks, it's much appreciated!
Success
I just tried a large (98MB) download and worked fine... It took forever to finalize at the end of the download, but it worked!
I used the settings explained here
jamezelle, thanks again for steering me the right way!
Now does anyone know how to make Rapidshare work from Opera Mobile? I know, it's an incredibly frustrating site even under the best conditions, who knows why so may people put up with it and actually use it to upload files, but the fact is, as horrible as it is, it's still the most popular, it would be nice if it could be made to work with Opera Mobile...

Rapidshare works on Opera Mobile 9.5 and above in my own experience. As for 8.65, never used it so I wouldn't know how to get it to work. If anything, just get your hands on NFSFAN's custom Opera build (It's in his thread). Alternatively, you can try out the Opera Mobile 10 Beta (link).

Opera Mobile - Save to Storage Card corruption issue

When I try to download cabs or other files directly with Opera Mobile, and it seems especially when I'm changing the save location to my sd card instead of the internal memory "My Documents" default location, I really often get as a result corrupted files that have not the same size as the original files even if the opera download manager show the file green as successfully downloaded.
If I download the file again on the same location then eventually the file is ok.
If I download the files with another browser, or if I copy the file from my computer in SD card I have not the issue.
So I suppose this is a Opera Mobile bug ? Maybe in the save dialog window when changing the location to SD card some part of the file that was already downloaded on internal memory is lost ?
- Do you experience the same issue ?
- As a workaround, do you know a way to set a default download folder to the SD card ?
Thanks,
Nibbler.
it's opera, I have this bug on other phones.
Thank you for confirmation that it's opera related.
Can you also confirm it seems to happen when you change the location where you want to save the file ? Or does it also happens without changing the save location ?
Have you found a workaround ? It's really annoying not to be able to trust the downloaded files are ok and have to double check or re-download them again
I don't have a work around but this happened to me when saving to my phones built-in memory last night - but one I downloaded today worked perfectly. I guess the workaround would be "use PIE" but given that Opera runs so well on the Snapdragon processor (I hated it on my diamond, it was so slow and horrible to use) I don't want to leave it!
I've only ever had 1 file corrupted whilst downloading in Opera, but find it much more favourable to use than IE. IE seems to randomly rename files whilst downloading, giving them new file extensions so that you have to rename them manually (eg. cab files becoming tsk files!)
And incidentally...

It does sound like the bug is in Opera, but downloads are done to a temporary area, not your selected download location, and then copied to your selected location when complete. Just don't want you chasing something that's not there, as changing the location during download will have no effect.
I agree with you ... I don't want to leave Opera it is far better than PIE !
Yet it is quite unpleasant to have to switch between Opera and PIE for downloads just because of this bug !
Maybe if we are enough people to bash HTC / Opera support to release a fix we could get an upgrade

Definitely an Opera issue, and not a HTC issue, or it would happen in other apps too.
Have you tried Opera 10? I know it's not a solution, but I'm just curious to see if the problem exists in that version also.

Yeah, I totally agree. It was a step backward with the missing functionality.
I just wondered if you'd noticed this particular issue with it. Basically, if you approach Opera and tell them about an issue in 9.7 and their answer is "It's fixed in 10", you're stuck with it.
Also, worth mentioning, I always save to my storage card, so every single download I've ever done with Opera has had the location changed during download. Like I said, it's only happened to me once.
Strange
No I hadn't yet approached Opera / HTC ... was waiting for confirmation from our beloved XDA community first
And I continue to say Opera / HTC on purpose even if I know it is specifically an Opera bug ... because even if the developer is Opera, the specific installed pinch to zoom release is bought from Opera and sold to us by HTC.
So to avoid as you said to be stuck with a buggy 9.7 when the 10 will be fixed and mature enough I think we should send complaints to HTC to have a fixed pinch to zoom enabled 9.7 or a fixed pinch to zoom / text reflow enabled 10
Do you always save to storage card changing manually the location in save dialog ? Or have you found a trick to automatically set the SD card as the default download location ?

Oh I wish I'd found a way to default to a folder location of my choice, but no, I manually change it every time. I also have the issue where I have CoPilot on my SD card, and it was the 1st thing on there, so my folder list in the save as dialog is simply a list of CoPilot folders and subfolders. I always save to the root of the storage card as I don't really have any other sensible option.
Where there isn't simply a treeview I'll never know!
I unfortunately totally agree with you, I'm also p*ssed of by this folder list which also force me to save to SD root !
I'm just puzzled how nice a software as opera can also mix inside such pathetic issues
When I'll contact support I will also mention this one
Any update of the folder/subfolder download location listing?
Other browsers, Skyfire and IE don't have this issue so why can't Opera fix it? Like others have said you have little choice but to use the root of the storage card if you prefer external downloads. It is not even in full alphabetical order, seem to choose folder/subfolders at random!

[Q] How do I open HTML files on MicroSD Card in Chrome?

Verizon GN3, updated, stock ROM, not rooted.
I have a 64gb MicroSD card installed, and put a copy of my photography website on it. I find I am unable to figure out a way to open it in Google Chrome.
I used ES File Explorer's FTP function to begin with, to copy files from my website to the card, and this worked beautifully. When I click on the index.html file on the card, the only options offered are HTML viewer and some text editors. Chrome is not an option (Chrome is the default browser for my phone).
If I long-press the file, and select Properties, I can copy the Path for the file, but when I paste this into Chrome's URL bar, it won't open:
Access to the file was denied
"The file at file:///storage/extSdCard/PhotoWebsite/index.html is not readable. It may have been removed, moved, or file permissions may be preventing access"
I have searched quite a bit, and tried various addresses, including localhost, localhost/mnt, etc., etc., but nothing seems to work.
Ultimately I want to have a Bookmark in Chrome where I can view my website offline when necessary, but this seems to be more complex than would appear necessary.
Any help appreciated.
Bump - came off first page without any replies.
Does anybody here know how to get an html file on your MicroSD Card to open in a browser??
Seriously? Is there no way to accomplish what should be a fairly basic task: for a browser to open up an html file???
If you use My Files to navigate to the file and then select it does it not give you options as to how to open it?

And unfortunately, no. My Files is a more basic app than ES File Explorer, and when I locate the file with it, and select it, 2 options are given:
Complete Action Using ES Note Editor or HTML Viewer.
Chrome or other Browser are not provided as an option.
HTML Viewer is apparently a type of minimalist browser, but fails hopelessly as a way to view webpages. No controls, no resize, etc. And I haven't figured out any way to get HTML Viewer to send anything to Chrome or other Browser.
As I said, this is really quite puzzling. It should be a no-brainer for a browser to open an html file, regardless of its location. Hopefully I'm missing something basic, but I've done quite a bit of searching and experimenting, and can't seem to find the trick, or particular syntax, to get this working.
Hmmmm.... Very weird! like you said, you'd think it'd be a simple task. I may play around now, just because LOL

I had run across one or two like that in my searching, but haven't tried them yet. I like to keep my systems as 'clean' as possible, and so my first choice would be to do it natively. It seems a lot of the problems people develop with their phones, lagginess, various quirks, etc., arise from some odd app or two that doesn't play well with others, or which fix some problem, but create others.
But reading the reviews of the app you linked to, it does seem to fill a pretty major gap that is apparently present in the Android OS, so may be worth a shot.
Thanks.
That was the first thing that came up in my search and I agree with keeping the phone "clean". I'll keep looking

Well, I went ahead and installed 'Open in Browser.' It installed without problem, ran it to select my preferred browser (Chrome), but when I try to open the file, with either Chrome or the stock Browser selected, I still encounter that same dang error message.
I even rebooted the phone, just to make sure, but no joy.
I have emailed the author of the app, to see what the deal is, and will post here if he replies.
Is there some type of Verizon 'protection' or 'security' software running by default that could be getting in the way? Any other ideas?
No responses from anyone else. This seems to be a built-in security "feature" of Chrome for Android, which prevents it from loading an HTML file from an External SD Card. I can't figure out any way around it.
I went ahead and copied the files to the GN3's internal memory:
files:///storage/emulated/0/PhotoWebsite
And I am then able to open the files without any difficulty in Chrome. I have kept the "Open in Browser" App, as it does add the option to open HTML files to a Browser directly from a File Manager, which comes in handy.
I have created a Bookmark for the link for ready access to it within Chrome, but weirdly, I have to long-press and select in Open in New Tab to get it to work. A simple tap, like any other Bookmark, doesn't work.
Fortunately, I have a lot of available Internal Memory, but I should be able to put the files on the External SD Card, and be able to open HTML files from it.
I am still interested in a way to do this, if anybody has any suggestions.
Ignore - duplicate entry. The forum seems to have a glitch here - every time I post, it warns me it can't post another within 20 seconds, even though I've only clicked it once.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the .html file can also be opened in desktop programs like MS Word, right? Have you tried any programs like open office or QuickOffice?

Thanks for the reply.
There's nothing wrong with the file itself (nor any of those from my website), so yes, it can be open in other programs (including HTML Viewer in my Note 3). The problem, as I currently understand it, is that Chrome (and the default browser on the GN3 as well) has some type of security provision that prevents it from loading HTML files that are stored on an external SD card.
When I copied all of the files to the GN3's internal memory, a "pseudo" SD Card, they can be opened without any difficulty.
Why it is this way, I have no idea, nor if there is any way of circumventing it.
Hi DLCPhoto,
I see the last post here was December 22, 2013.
Have you come up with any solutions as of yet?
I am having the same experience even at this late date using Android 5.1.1 Lollypop in a Samsung Core Prime
Standing by . . .
Unfortunately, I never figured out a work-around. I just gave up and put the files I wanted on the Device's memory, where they can be readily accessed.
I'm still using that Note 3, and don't know if anything has changed with more recent versions of Android.
Sorry...
