Slingbox TV and a Vodafone Kaiser... - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Accessories

Hi...
I'd really like to be able to watch TV on my handset and I'm tempted to buy a Slingbox and hook it up to my Sky+, as the prices for this hardware have dropped to around £50.
The thing that worries me is any charges Vodafone might make for data transfer charges.
On another forum Ive seen a Vodafone user claim that he doesn't get any extra charges using his handset to receive TV via Slingbox using 3G, but I'm skeptical.
I know that using WiFi would incur no costs, but what about 3G & HSDPA...
Do any forum members have first hand experience of using Slingbox on the Vodafone network ?
If so, are you charged for doing so, if you are, how much do you end up paying ?
BTW, I'm on the £7.50 Mobile Internet Plan.
TIA,
Mark.

slingbox kaiser
I'm on vodafone and use my slingbox all the time. I'm on an unlimited UK data contract, although I try and use wifi where possible.

Mr G 2003...
I'm on the £7.50 'Unlimited' plan, but reading the small print there is a "fair usage" limit of 500Mb a month. Using Vodafones site, this equals about 6 1/2 hours TV a month !
Are you also on the same £7.50 package ? Do you use 3G for Slingbox for more than 6 1/2 hours a month without extra charges ?
M.

I'm planning to buy universal in UK-contract advice wanted

I'm thinking of getting either the T-Mobile MDA Pro or O2 Exec in the UK. Or if I was to get an unlocked one could I use my existing sim card (not O2 or T-Mobile) which is just a voice pay as you go?
Which one have people found to be the best?- probably more interms of contract rather than function as they should be the same??
Anything I should be looking out for?
Can I assume that if you don't take the "Data download" extra then you can't use GPRS???
Also is the O2 4mB "Browse and download" a better deal than the T-Mobile "Web & Walk"? While the web&walk is unlimited it's restricted to web browsing only (no internet radio steaming!). In your usage have you found 4Mb per month be enough or shouldn't I worry.
My main use would be for occasional remote access and sending emails on the move.
Any advice would be welcome.
Thanks,
Bill
Hi Billuk
I'd be very suprised if 4mb was enough for internet radio streaming anyway. There is a version of Web n Walk that is designed for higher users. It's about a tenner extra (Web n Walk Pro).
Thanks for the reply.
The W&W Pro version may be overkill but as it's only a 12 month contract I can always switch or move onto a different contact if my usage doesn't match my contract.
Anyone else any other thoughts?
Are you all enjoying your Universals?
Is the T-Mobile offering the best one in the UK?
Thanks
Bill
Re: I'm planning to buy universal in UK-contract advice want
I was charged hugely (recently refunded) for one days internet streaming on O2, 32Mb it was, and was charged close to a hundred quid. I reserve it for when I'm at home on Wifi now.
Nobody touches T-Mobile for data. I'm sure the odd bit of streaming won't arouse their suspicions.
Get the T-Mobile Relax plan (12 month) with WebnWalk. Flext is 18month, you'll probably want to keep on the cutting edge of hardware in 12 months.
T-Mobile Web n Walk 3G, GPRS bundle
I am with T-mobile currently have a 3G/GPRS web bundle that lets you surf unlimited for £6.80 per month, not bad for 384k speeds when in 3G coverage. When you dont have 3G, it slips back to gprs at no extra cost.
I am under a 12-month contract with O2, which offers 200MB data flow per month at 25.99 exc. (29.7 inc.). This offer is a pure data offer and I use Nokia 6680 from 3 for voice & text. I enjoy this offer very much for its nearly unlimited access to online content if you don't download software, music and video.

As a consumer, that deal isn't open to me, it's business only.
Sad, dark ages stuff.
since one of your thoguhts was to buy an unlocked device -
for me by far the cheapest way to own the exec was to go thorugh the 02 website I paid £150 and now £20 per month over 12 months on contract
Mostly I use wifi for all my data - there are so many unsecured / free ones, andof course at home and work I'm coverd.
Occaisionaly I use 3G and haven't had any problems/excessive bills - bound to be cheaper than pay as you go and probably if you use it infrequently cheaper than a regalur data package.
Hi
I would go for the xda exec as you can get this from o2 direct (0nline) for £149.99 on a £19 month tariff which = £377.99 over the minimum term of your contract and my xda is unlocked (as has every other o2 phone I have had been) which means you could get an Orange PAYg sim and get unlimited GPRS access for £1 per day and use this above the 1mb you get with your o2 contract
Full details can be found on Orange's web site here: http://www.orange.co.uk/service_plans/payasyougo/extra_costs.html
Basically as long as you have some credit on your PAYG sim, all you need to do is dial 450 and select 'buy an extra' Select 'orangeworld extra' and the
£1 wil be deducted from your existing credit on your phone.

"Access Orange World and send multimedia messages for less."
Is Orange World unrestricted Internet Access? If so, Wow.
Why the hell are O2 so expensive for their data, if I can get unlimited data from ORange for £30/mth.
Hi
Yeah Orange is - you pay your £1 and you have ulimited access for that day (starts and ends at midnight)
Loads of people have been using it but not many people know about it hence my post here and on my forum

UK orange world is full internet and UK Tmob WnW is just http? Wow, talk about reverse worlds.
In the Netherlands, Tmobile WnW at 10 euros a month (6-7 quid) is unrestricted traffic, unrestricted internet, proxyfree -- just that on the UMTS/HSDPA network your connection speed is (supposed to be? may not be atm) limited to 64 kbit/s maximum rather than full UMTS.
Whereas Orange World is http-only through a proxy, costs 6 euros a month unlimited traffic, with regular internet traffic being charged by the meg.

O2 or T-mobile

Apologies, I was not sure where to post this.
I am and have been on o2 for years, however the data tariffs are pretty much in the stone age for pricing, I have seen T-mobiles web n talk deals and they look good. Can anyone advise if I take the plunge and let my o2 contract expire (this month) will I be happy with t-mobile?
I am in the UK for your information, cheers.
Oh and why the different web n talk options, only one allowing VOIP, what is restricting it?
Same situation here, HSDPA access restricted to business only, and they charge ALOT for any downloading at all!!
T-mob does look good however i would only require a SIM only tarriff.....from what ive seen on the site they only offer the good web-n-walk tarrifs with a handset bundled in (for a price obviously)

O2 used to be great when I enjoyed free access for a year, since then they've stayed at £2.35 per MB. Not only that but as an online customer no bundles supported (still no where near t-mobiles pricing).
T-Mobile have been pretty good, I have a flext 30+ Web and Walk standard, works out at around £35 per month.
Its not actually unlimited internet I think it works out to something around 1gb per month but with the amount you download with normal active sync e-mail and web browsing I havent hit it yet so it (and the fair use policy just says if you exceed 1gb per month they will ask you to cut down a bit, with more restrictions each time you break the 1Gb limit) Basically its not designed for peer to peer, streaming or skype.
The pro version isnt that much more expensive though.

Not entirely sure about that one, I've been with t-mob since they were one2one.
You can pac code your number across so most likely you could go to W+W without buying a handset....
strange t-mobile
whats strange about t-mobile uk is that, although they say 1gb limit, ive been using my w&w plan since april 06 and have almost consistently exceeded the limits, in the last few months according to my data monitor on the nokia 6680 ive exceeded 10 gigs a month. One of the call centers isnt too far from my town and the area i live in has very few serious w&w users or so i believe.. ive got good HSPDA reception in my area and plan to do some testing with my phones.. will post results..
I moved from O2 to T-Mobile for the exact same reason... I simply couldn't justify the rip-off data charges!
Since moving to T-Mobile I can honestly say I don't regret making the move... their service is as good or better than O2 and having web n walk is absolute bliss
I'm on the basic web n walk package, but as far as I know there is nothing preventing you using your mobile as a modem for a laptop and I'm sure I've read posts from other users saying you can still make internet calls (skype) on the basic package??? - the only thing the saleman told me is they do monitor activities and if they detect another IP address (from a computer I would guess) or any voice/video streaming, there's a chance I could be billed for it

Roaming charges?
I've been thinking to switch to WnW but have been unable to fing the roaming data costs. That is... i use it to sync to exchange while abroad (mostly europe).
Can't find the costs on the t-mob site
t-mobile DATA costs
3G (where available) £7.50 per Mb
This is the data charge anywhere outside the UK. I wen't to India sent two emails with picture attachments. Got bill, ended up sending 4mb which came to about 30 quid. It's a shame they don't have a better deal for people on Web n walk. BTW, i am on web n walk plus, the middle package, £12.50 a month. 3 gb limit and when connected to my laptop avg DL speed is 130.0kbs
Link for roming costs anyway, http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/personal/our-services/going-abroad/details-by-country.do

I bought a Universal on Ebay that had been on O2 and I stuck in a tmobile pay as you go sim card. Once I'd put in the server details (for which there is a help page on the tmobile site) it works great. I don't do a lot of data normally, but when I do, I get charged a flat rate of £1 for that day. I used it abroad to get email in Switzerland and France. It worked right off the plane with no fiddling at all.

I did the same for an O2 XDA IIs - originally I just used it as a phone (on O2 pay-as-you-go) and PDA, but recently needed Web access. Popped into a mobile phone shop, pick up a brochure of tarrifs saw the O2 one, picked myself up off the floor and bought a T-Mobile pay-as-you-go SIM. T-Mobile very helpful in setting up the web access over the phone (they called me back on a different mobile)

I only got a sim Flex20 and whenever like i subscribe to web&walk through internet account as well opt out by telling 1 month notice.... or you can use pay as you go sim card... £1 a day and unlimited internet even VOIP.... i often use it for skype and got excellent result, i taked hours and never got problem... cheers

O2 UK Data Plans

There has been an ongoing sporadic discussion regarding the best data plan in the UK, with the suggestions that T-Mobile (who have HSDPA but only 84% coverage) and Orange (who are expected to announce £8pcm unlimited internet) are the cheapest.
I have just spoken to O2 as my contract with them is coming to an end. Their retentions department says that they have realised that they are no longer competitive on data and will be making an announcement in the next month or so (it was suppiosed to be by the end of this month), with a view to offering more competitive data allowances - presumably to compete with T-Mobile.
they already do £10/month unlimited data but they don't shout about it.
"blackberry unlimited monthly roaming"
from 3g.co.uk/3gforum they say its £10 for 20mb on o2. Rip off.
I've just moved to Three, they're brill!! £5 a month for unlimited (1 gig) or
£10 (sign up for 12 months and u get a free slingbox!!) for slingbox and orb on the move as well as your gig data.
I got a crap phone (LG u300) so i got half price line rental for 18 months and put the sim in my xda exec.
I'm paying: £27.50 a month for 18 months which gets me:
£17.50 (hplr) 300 mins, 1000 texts a month
£10 x-series gold which gives me:
80 hours orb & slingbox use (more than 2.5 hours a day!)
5000 skype minutes (more than 2.6 hours a day!)
1gb data
Unbeatable tbh!! i'm just setting up my 3g settings (if i can find them) and I've just setup my slingbox, sky tv on the move!! plus my music/videos on my pc through orb!! how awesome!!
3 ftw!
You guys think thats a rip off, be glad your not in canada? $1 CDN = 0.454 GBP.
Canada Data Plans
10 GBP = $22... for $25 we get 3MB
O2 Unlimited Blackberry roaming
Be careful
O2's blackberry unlimited roaming doesnt include data , just email - the only one the unlimited is on is a RIM Blackberry device, blackberry connect devices which the xda exec is does not include it.
I took out a contract with CPW O2 (Car phone warehouse managed the aaccount but the same conditions apply) and was sold the unlimited blackberry bundle, I noticed that my online credit allowance was going down when I queried this I was advised that the charge was for data and I had run up £30 (the unlimited £10 pm brings down the mb charge to £1 per meg)
I fought this and was advised that I was mis sold the item , as I love my xda and also have paid for the insurance policy via the CPW which allows a cancellation of contract as 6 months on a 18 month policy I have stook with it.
I could have got a blackberry 8800 but I use tomtom and the blackberry doesnt support this and I dont like the blackberry maps.
Be careful when asking for the unlimited roaming as it is not what it seems - I have found out to my cost , I use wifi at home on the phone so im not bothered about the internet whilst out ....
The plus's outweigh the negatives !!

So if there is a 1GB cap, where does the unlimited part come in?
they advertise it as unlimited, as soon as you hit 1gig they don't just stop the service, you get a SMS alert to warn you of approaching the limit, then if you continue to "abuse" the service they restrict it.
So it's not a cap per se but more of a fair usage policy. But in all fairness the other mobile carriers do the same. 1 gig on a phone is a lot of data though! that doesn't count towards the slingbox or orb usage either!

UK Price reduction

T-Mo UK now has the G1 free on a £30/m 18m contract. You get an 8GB memory card and WnW Plus (which gives you access to Wifi hotspots as well as "unlimited" 3G).
Quite tempted, but read so many so-so reviews of the hardware.
I just got mine on an upgrade. But i only got a 2gb card. No biggy. IMO the phone is great.
Its got a 528mhz processor
192mb ram
256mb rom
3mp camera
Bluetooth
wifi
gps
compas
accelerometer
Comes with a wired headset (usb connection, u can get a usb to 3.5mm adapter if you want to use a better headphones)
Battery life is ok. If your a heavy user of internet its going to drain the battery quick. Ive been charging twice a day when i use it alot. You can get a higher capacity battery aswell. Though its possible theres still a few bugs thats causing battery loss.
Dont have everything on all the time.
Its permenantly connected to the internet. Browsing speed is respectable and the browser is nice.
The hardware is great. We just need software to go with it. At the moment it only supports bluetooth headset. But that will change with new updates.
No virtual keyboard, but again thats coming aswell.
Gmail is great on it.
Text messaging works, though mms doesnt support videos and i dont think you can save to SD yet.
Theres still alot of support to add yet. pdf word etc
If your willing to put up with some missing features then its a great phone.
When you get it, its probably be on rc7. Youll get a notification of a new update. If you want to keep root access dont install it. rc8 update fixes the root access and isnt reversible at the moment.
If you no what your doing with linux terminal commands, id install the modified rc8 update that keeps root access, its explained in the development thread.

from what I've been told, you can't go down the price plan till you come to upgrade so you're stuck on what you've got unfortunatly.
the £30/month is either ther combi 25 + web'n'walk plus(£25/month + £5 for the web'n'walk. 300mins, 600texts) or the flext 30 + free web'n'walk plus(£30/month, £140 to spend a month). I tempted to get the flext 30 but also got my eye on the touch hd so not fully decided yet.
Ive just picked up the £30 a month combi plan from carphone warehouse. Got a 2gb memory card with it, not fussed about that. Really pleased with the phone so far, shame I was so hasty about upgrading. No root access for now .

Dont worry about your data becoz if your in the UK (which i assume u are) then you dont have a data allowance, you have whats called a Fair use policy (or FUP) basiclly this means that you will never be charged for data with the WnW Plus feature, the only thing that may happen is if you go over your 3Gig FUP for 3 months in a row you will get a letter sent to u asking to reduce your usage and if you still go over it your speeds will be reduced to 64kbps for 2-4 weeks.
If you then go over it once more (were now up to 6/7 months in a row!!) it will be permanently reduced to 64 kbps or you can upgrade to the max version (about 20 quid per month extra) which gives a 10Gig FUP.
All i'm really saying is dont worry about it !! Surf away. (Untill you recieve a letter )
It actually isn't £30pm. Its £35pm. that's because the WnW if £5pm extra and you NEED it as the phone is an internet phone. Mines on that deal for 700 mins and unlimited txts, unlimited browsing.

I don't have a g1 yet(not fully decided yet, also looking at the touch hd), but wanted to check if the t-mobiles hotspots are included with the g1 plan.
looking on the forums on t-mobile.com(usa site)link if you download this hotspot app you can connect to the hotspot(tho reading that thread it seemed hit & miss, i.e. some people were able to others not able to), just wondered if there was a similar thing for the uk. I don't really travel much so its not really a big deal for me(don't think I'll be using up the 3gb fup anyway) but would have been nice to have.
if I was to put the sim into another non-g1 phone(be it t-mobile or sim-free), what is the fup on the internet in that case(1gb or still 3gb)? also will there be any problems making calls, texting etc? I currently don't have a job but if I was to start I might be putting the sim into another phone as I wouldn't want to loose the g1(places like sainsburys, toys r us don't like you to keep your phone on you during work and want you to leave it in the staff room).

No T-Mob UK doesnt have anything like that mate
But you can use the sim in another fone and use the web free of charge as its your sim that has the feature on it - not specific to the fone
Well they don't make it very easy to find out what the difference is between web'n'walk, web'n'walk Plus and web'n'walk MAX, but on the info about hotspots it says:
WiFi HotSpot included in Mobile Broadband Plans
New customers that sign up to web'n'walk Max, Plus, or Plus Daily* can now enjoy WiFi access in any of our HotSpots across the UK. So on top of 3G coverage across the country, unlimited WiFi Hotspots are included in the price - in places where you need WiFi the most, such as airports, hotels and Starbucks.
http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/services/mobile-internet/on-your-laptop/free-wifi/
This was what I'd always understood about the Plus option- that it sanctions tethering and let's you use hotspots.
My current contract ends next month, and since it doesn't look like the UK is getting the Vario IV, I might just go for one of these.
And the T-Mobile 3G coverage is tremendous where I live, on my Vario II whenever I connect for data I get a nice little H symbol and a fast download speed, strangely, the coverage in Newcastle (upon Tyne, the real Newcastle!) the connection can be a bit hit and miss

The standard plus option doesn't but because your getting the g1 plus option for a fiver (or free on flext) it isn't included as it is a promo !

Bought a G1 on ebay

Hi,
I have bought a G1 on ebay yesterday and it will be coming in 2-3 days. As G1 needs internet to attain the maximum capability, I opted for having Web N Walk with my current contract.
My question is, as I have included Web n Walk with my contract and when I insert the SIM in this externally purchased G1, is it as equivalent to being in the "always on" internet. Is it equivalent to me buying the handset in Flext 30 with comes along with WnW
Your help is greatly appreciated
Thanks
I just bought the phone on Ebay as well. I hope I'm not being bullshitted by the seller.
I don't really understand ur question. But do mean wether it's possible to stay always online with a web'n'walk contract on the G1 without extra costs? Or do you mean wether it's possible to use the phone with web'n'walk. Both cases should be a yes.
I have a sim only contract with T-mobile. Having the Touch Diamond for a month, I thought I needed the web'n'walk deal. But just the day after it got activated I sold the Diamond. The touch resistant touchscreen and choppy WM6.1 were just too much. I now temporarely have the Samsung E900. But my costs have skyrocketed since then. I use the web alot while traveling. For the first 3 month I paid like €12,- a month. With WnW normally €20,- a month (10 for sim only and 10 for web), now is €45,- for the past each 2 month. Maybe it's me I don't know, but watch out..
It is my understanding u r going to need the data plan for $24.99 per/month. That is what I have on the G1 I have. I cancelled the data plan on my wifes G1 due to the fact she only needed it to sign in or create her gmail account to activate the phone. After her activating I promptly called T-Mo and told then I did not need the data plan on her phone because she is has wifi 99% of the time. They ( the T-Mo CSR's) told me the web and walk/ web to go will not work due to the fact that web n walk/web 2 go is not compatible with the G1, it has it's own data plan. So it would be best for you to hear it directly from them , so give them a call and see what they tell you. It will probably be the same thing. Also the web n walk/ web 2 go can get pretty expensive if you use the web much due to the plans on it being pretty pricey and could end up being just as much as the data plans for the G1.
Sorry for loaded reply

HI djind....
My question was that:
Case 1:
1) I bought a new G1 on ebay and not on contract for a cheap deal of £210
2) Same day I added WnW to my existing Tmobile contract
3) When I get the G1 and insert my SIM, is it equivalent to me being "permanently always on" internet or should I do something else to be "always on"
Case 2:
1) I as a new customer buy the G1 with a new 18 month contract, say Flext 30, which includes WnW along with plan
2) when I set up the phone and start using it, I am "permanently always-on" internet wherein I can receive the updates over the air as well
Is Case 1 and Case 2 equivalent?
Thanks

Quick answer..............no, because the G1 wnw plan is equivilant to wnw plus, the one you will be on is standard wnw.The difference is the data allowance (Standard wnw is one gig and wnw plus is 3 gig) and also the speed, wnw plus can go upto "7.2mbps" (when the network is ready, probs a couple of years lol) standard wnw can only go up to 128kbps, now you can get the g1 version of wnw on the new versions of flext and combi, so if you are on one of those then call CS and change it (for the same price!!), if your on another priceplan then your screwed lol. The only problem is if you are on a Combi PP then if you get the G1 wnw plan then you need to have if on for 18mnths or if you want to remove it you would need to pay 18 minus however many months you've had it times £5. any Q's just ask, I work for T-Mobile UK Tech Support hope this helps

Great Response. Satisfactory reply. What you say absolutely makes sense. But is it not a kind of "cheating" and making the customer a fool when the website says a "unlimited internet" and eventually you realise that the allowance is capped to 1 GB or 3 GB.
And correct me if I am wrong, Tmobile seems to have 3 WnW plans which the public doesnt know that much really.
WnW Standard - 1 GB allowance - £7.50 per month (wifi hotspot charged as extra)
WnW Plus - 3 Gb allowance - £12 per month (wifi hotspot charged as extra)
WnW Max - 10 GB allowance - £22 per month (wifi hotspot charged as extra)
Basically with G1 price plans, its the Supermax, its inclusive of everything like "real unlimited" download and wifi hotspot included also? Right Chris

i done it i got the g1 and added web and walk free trial to my contract it works everything works except android market place it asks for age identifaction becuase it has content lock only way to remove is to phone t-mobile and i did and they said it is already removed and it not allowing me to acces it becuase i aint on g1 special tarriff
With Web'n'Walk in the UK, it's not just the caps which differ. The standard WnW prohibits any use of the phone as a modem for a PC/laptop, so no tethering. The WnW Plus allows modem use, but disallows voice over IP. The WnW Max does allow this.

Kind of but the internet is unlimited becoz you will never be charged just restricted if you continually go over the 1Gb or 3Gb whatever one your on. (The G1 version of wnw plus has a 3gb FUP)
With reg to hotspot access,
Std Wnw its not included
WnW Plus it is included
G1 WnW Plus its Not included
and WnW max it is included
