Seidio/Mugen/Mobi? Which Extended Battery for Tilt/Kaiser? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Accessories

Hi-
I apologize if this has already been asked. I *DID* search around this site, several others and even Google but no one seems to have posted a comparison of extended battery compatibility along with pros/cons of the expanded battery cover backing...
So, like everyone else, my Tilt doesn't last overnight w/o a recharge. In looking at my options for extended batteries, it looks like the largest are the Mugen 3000, the Seidio 3200 and the Mobi 3000.
I'm curious as to peoples opinions on these major points:
1-Duration coupled with whether the battery causes lock-ups/freezes or other errors for the phone...
2-How the revised back cover of the phone compares to the OEM cover with respect to the camera lens, speaker and GPS.
3-Cases and cradle chargers that will work w/ extended battery covers...
4-Tweaks or other hacks needed for the Tilt to recognize the extended battery time.
Thanks everyone in advance!!
M

Instead of other I think you should have put the option of " I dont know". I think people clicked for the sake of clicking to see the results quicker. My 2 cents.

extended battery
I have a Boxwave 2700 mah and a Seidio 1600 mah battery. The boxwave is from Taiwan with a humped back cover, so I can use my Seido holster, but will not fit in my cradle. Does fit into my Brodit car holder though, and the full backed extended battery cover will as well.
I cannot for the life of me get the correct battery reserve power reading correct. I have tried every tweak and twitch I have read and perused the registry for settings not mentioned elseware, as well as various 3rd party battery utilities, to no avail. Quite frustrating, as I can alarm on low battery, pull it out, put it back in and have 45-60% battery left on the meter. Don't know what else to do, as it does it with my 1600 and 2700 and did it with a "borrowed' Mugen 3000 for a test. Tried all the reccomendations of running it fully down and doing recharge, all that stuff, still wrong indicaitons of remaining power.
This is my greatest frustration right now with the Tilt I have and the other 8 I have bought for employees.
MWS

wow! im having the same problem!
got the mugen 3000 and the reading is always off!
I cant find any solutions!

I ordered the Seidio 3200 battery and tried charging it in my AT&T 8925 Tilt. I left it on charge until the light turn Green.
Starting using it and within 8 hours I was at LOW battery and system died. I removed the battery and put it back in and the battery indicated goes up to 73%.
What is the deal here. Is it my phone that does not understand that it has a larger battery or is it the battery. Since that time I have sent the battery and got a new one and the same thing.
Is there some software utility to tell the Pocket PC that it has a larger battery.
Confused....????...!!!!

Wow, so...
As I sit here perusing options for replacement Wizard and Kaiser batteries (my sister's phone and my own...) I suddenly fear the pointlessness of choosing an extended battery! Has any headway been made on these extended battery glitches in general?

Nope. The Tilt's hardware always expects the standard battery's capacity, and will turn off when that is reached even if the battery is actually twice the capacity and is still half full.

So what you're saying is buying an extended battery is useless because it will shut off at the regular Tilt battery level? Well, glad I read this thread, I won't waste my money.

Yep. However you can remove/reinsert the battery and have more running time again. But then in that case as you have to turn the device off and open the case anyway you're better off getting a 2nd standard battery and swapping it when it's empty. Saves you from having a Kaiser that's twice as thick for nothing.

What About....
Well, I think one objective would be to try charging it as often as possible. It may be that if you plug it back into a charger, it will grant an extension of time. But in the event you are unable to charge it, you could simply remove and reinsert the battery to continue on. Has anyone tried this? I'm curious to know.

"So what you're saying is buying an extended battery is useless because it will shut off at the regular Tilt battery level? "
Could someone please clarify this as I find it confusing as well, I'm just using the times and percent for reference to understand.
Lets say with the stock battery it takes 8 hours to get to 40%.
Will an extended battery like those listed give me longer, like maybe 10-12 hours before it gets to 40%?
I too have searched and read everything from people swearing to get no extra time at all no matter what they do, to people getting double the talk/data time and everything in between, including but not limited to that the usable time gets longer with each recharge. If I'm going to have to take the battery out 3 times a day, I might as well just get 4 or 5 extra stock sized batteries for the same price.
Looking for someone to clear the fog...
Thanks in advance.

Take a read from my post on here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=336896&page=2
Battery 2700mAh:
"Full discharge removed battery and replaced and gained 10% so not that much of a difference no where near 50%
So effectively i have 2435mAh battery & 10% reserve so still far better than a 1350mAh."

I wish aztilt would have posted which battery he/she has.

I am one of those that is very happy with the extended battery because the duration from turn on to auto shut off by the phone is at least 3 hours longer than the OEM battery for my usage. I don't have to think about charging the battery or swapping the battery until I get home at night from work. And there is still the option of remove and reinstall the battery if I don't want to charge it right away. I rarely if never need to do the latter.

If I could get 3 more hours before shut-down, that might be worth it. It would mean 90% of the time, I'd get 12 hours of use as long as I didn't need the GPS. It would have meant last week I would have not spent an extra 30 minutes on ice because the GPS quit with less than a mile to go, but I didn't know which way, and I had not way to charge it, so I spent an extra 45 minutes trying to find the highway home when it was time to leave. Just 3 extra hours would have been perfect.
I can't tell you how many times an extra 30 minutes even would have made all the difference in the world, and I really can't think of a time when I needed more than a couple hours.
I realize I'm playing to its weakness. I rarely use the phone itself, but I'm always in email, rss feeds, web browsing, listening to music and using the GPS.
If an extended battery will get me through a normal workday without having to rush home to charge it... That would make me a happy camper.

I have the Mugen 3000

I have the seidio 3200 and after i fully charged it for the first time use, I use it for like 12 hours of txt, calls, internet and normally at the end of the 12 hours i have about 20% of battery left. Just mainly depends on what ROM your using, what radio your using and what programs you have running. Just because 5 people have the same battery doesnt mean all 5 people use their phones for the same thing. Best thing i found is find the one with the highest battery life and go with it.

Tilt Extended Battery?
I have heard some mixed stories about some of the extended batteries from actualy users.
First looking at the 2800 size battery:
http://www.amazon.com/AT-Tilt-Elect...=wl_it_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1
"This larger battery lasts about 1.5x longer, so around 15 hours (or more, I haven't let it drain completely, yet). This wasn't a huge increase, but it does let me use the phone for roughly a full work day. My usage includes push e-mail during the day, with numerous incoming and outgoing text messages, and maybe 30 minutes of talk time.
Charge time is excellent in my opinion, it took around two hours to charge the battery from 20% to 100%. "
Next I was looking at the 3200 size battery but couldn't understand why the price on these were so much higher than the 2800 for the little extra run time that you are getting.
http://www.amazon.com/Mugen-3000mAh...dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1
"PROS:
- the battery fits in the phone perfect
- the new back cover given is high quality, fits nicely, and looks great
- the new battery and back cover combo makes the phone thicker, obviously, but it is not over-bearing and easily noticable to others
CONS:
- just one, but it is a big one. so, the original battery is 1350mAh, right? well, that wasn't getting it done at all. we're talking 8-10 hours a charge with minimal phone calls. i do have exhange push email and another pop email that i am checking. that is most of the battery drain i imagine. fine, so i saw this and thought, "perfect, 3000mAh! this should get me a whole lot more time". well, as i finding out, not really. to be fair, i am getting more time. i would say 12, maybe 14 hours. a net gained of 4 hours. that seems strange to me for a battery that is 2.5 times as big. anyway, just want to give you a heads up so there isn't too much disappointment. PS - i did the whole "battery training" thing where i charge it all the way up, ran it all the way down....etc. 4 days in a row. "
So hope that helps...
I just hope this with an emergency charger, http://www.amazon.com/Battery-Charg...UTF8&coliid=IR8PJ5939FJ0L&colid=3UMYZBAJT4AYL
helps me get a full day with my unit...If this doesn't help I might consider the Iphone because I hear that is getting a full day of juice with one charged regular battery.
i was useing a 2400ma extended battery it worked good other than the door would catch on the part where the extended battery was sticking out pop the door off knock the battery out and turn off my phone. it was such a pain in the butt that i decided that i would rather charge my phone everyday than look in my holster to find my phone had been turned off for who knows how long. i was thinking about getting this battery though next time i feel like i have money to blow. http://www.amazon.com/1600mAh-Exten...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1226420513&sr=8-1
I bought the 2800 Mah battery. And it came with a ugly back door so i order the nice door that looks similar to the orignial cover. Well the 2800 works better and last longer. it mite last longer n better if you have a custom firmware. cuz im running the 6.1 n i heard the battery dies fast from it. But with the extended battery my phone dosent die fast.

Finally - Slim 1500mAh Extended Battery Using Original Cover!

Finally it seems that Seidio has come out with an extended battery that fits without having to replace the back cover.
http://www.seidioonline.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=BASI15HTCX1
It is only 1500mAh which is about 10% more battery power but that might just be enough for some people to make it through one heavy day of use.
Part # BASI15HTCX1
The compatibility tab on the manufactures site says it will work with the Touch Pro / Fuze.

Seems like a lot of money for a little more power. I think I'd rather buy 2 extra batteries and a charger for half the price and just keep an extra battery on hand... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2x-Battery-13...286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66:2|65:15|39:1|240:1318
For what it's worth, I picked up one of these and slapped it in my Fuze last night. I know it'll take a handful of power drains to fully "charge" it up, but will report back when I can.

I bought something similar to this on ebay. The two batteries I got last a lot shorter than the factory battery. I cycled the batteries 5 times and still the capacity has not increased. I would say I get about 25% shorter battery life with these batteries...they do a good job of making them look authentic...minus they all have the same serial number stamped on them...
ahh i was hoping it had more mah, its not even worth the extra money to purchase this. the things people make, its not even worth it.
Has anyone ordered or used one of these? I'm interested I just want some opinions before I go and spend 44 US dollars on it.

Conditioning a Li-Ion battery is a myth and you only speed up the lifetime of the battery that only lasts about 2-3 years.
When you get your phone, you should plug it in, charge it to full, and have fun with it. None if this "charge, discharge, charge, discharge" is needed.

It's not a myth, sort of.
It takes a few cycles for the sensor to accurately understand the capacity of the battery. This means the battery might be detected as "empty," when there's some left.
After that, you only need to "recalibrate" once in three months or so to stay updated. For everyday use, you are right. It's better to charge whenever possible (but constantly trying to "charge" at 100% is not a good thing, even with the "smart chip" halting the process).

So, does anyone have any thoughts on the seidio extended battery? How much longer is it lasting for you all? How much of a difference does it actually make?
As I posted before, I got the battery the other day. Thus far, it seems to extend my capabilities enough to where I only have to charge my Fuze once a day. The exception was Friday when my bus got stuck in traffic, so I watched video for an hour. Previously, I could last about 8 hours before needing to charge.
For what it's worth, I'm a heavy SMS and data user. Don't really talk all that much, but do a lot of SMS, surfing, apps, and other PDA-ish activities with my Fuze. Running the Elite RC2 ROM as well.

Went from about 8 hours to about 12-13 hours, unless I do something super-draining like watch video for an extended period of time. Mind you, I've only had the battery in what... 4 days now, so this is still very limited scope.
Today, I was up at 6AM @ 100%... spent about 30 minutes surfing on the train, during my commute in... did some SMS... and just spent the last 90 minutes stuck in a meeting playing Freecell... and am at 57% full.

and also as a backup! the main reason i might buy this is not to completely replace my original battery, but between the two, you can easily get through a heavy day of usage... now to find a charging dock for the extra battery...

This might be true for laptop batteries but not necesarily true for phone batts.. the phones monitor the battery's voltage and compute the state of charge based on that.. there is no "smart" guts in phone batteries

Can acbPowerMeter be trusted?

Hi!
I have had my Tytn for roughly 2.5 years. This autumn/winter the battery time I could get out of my Tytn was really ridicilousley low, so I bought a new "non original" 1500 mAh battery. It got better but not much, I started to think that perhaps the battery time was never better than this.
The other day I skimmed through this forum about battery problems and found this little program for meassuring battery consumption. I have now had it on since I removed my phone from the charger this morning and now, 4 hours later I'm down to ~30% battery power and acbPowerMeter tells me that the phone has used 90 mAh all together.
I have made 1 shorter phone call and made a couple of synchs with turbo 3G during this period.
Does 90 mAh sound at all right? That would mean that the battery was crap to begin with....or is it possible that acbPowerMeter isn't giving me even "close to correct values"?
Does anyone have any comments or ideas around this issue?
Best Regards,
Olle
Don't know anything about your abcpowermeter. What I do know, is that when I've had a new battery, or when I flash a new ROM, I often have problems with low battery. I just run the battery down like three times in a row, and my battery always improves.
So before making any determinations or using a program, I always run the battery down.
I've got acbpowermeter on my phone, and I don't think it's much good to be honest. If I remember correctly, the last time I left it running, it severely drained my battery - not exactly what you want a power meter app to do.
I find it far more reliable by using BatteryStatus from chi-tai.info and just seeing what the momentary power usage is. (it sits on your Today screen). Yeah, it's not a comprehensive breakdown of your power usage over time, but it doesn't run the battery down like acbPowerMeter does
Like you though, I'm still curious as to what exactly my device consumes in terms of power over the course of a single charge, and I'm on the look out for a decent app which just ticks away in the background measuring power drain...
Hi!
Regardless of Acbpower I just bought a new HTC Original battery and now I have the "normal" battery life I was used to during the first year of my device. As it has allready been discussed in other threads: These non-original batteries are far from always a safe purchase...
Br, Olleman
I recommend Lion Batteries. I have had a great experience with their 3000mAh battery for over a year and a half. Use that 3G on my Hermes and music all the time -- serious user-- and the battery still last me over day. Mind you I am constantly on the internet and always using push email and other data-centric services.
As far as Battery Status, for general purposes is great as I find the more complicated the app the more drain on the system it is trying to read. A simple app that you can just keep an eye over a period of time I think works best.
As far as batteries I was concerned where to buy one. Since my brand new battery died over just a year. Mind you a tethered a lot and I think that tends to kill the battery life faster.

Sudden Battery Improvement ...

I thought I'd write this thread simply to see if it can work for others.
I have read throughout this site that it's good to allow your battery to become completely drained, and then recharge via the power adaptor. Some people even suggest to do it 2-3 times.
Yesterday, for the second time since I bought the phone several weeks ago, I decided to allow the battery to become completely drained. I then charged it using ONLY the power adaptor.
Results?
Before, when in standby mode, no radio, wifi off, screen off, I would lose about 1% battery power per hour through the night while sleeping.
This morning I was shocked. My battery was fully recharged just before midnight, and when I woke up at about 9am this morning, I had lost only 2%. Yes, it said 98% charge left.
WOOHOO!
Anyway, I guess it really does help to allow the battery to drain and fully recharge a few times in the beginning.
Peter
I seem to read somewhere that Lithium-ion batteries don't have to be drained to be charged properly. Moreover, it's just okay even if you keep on charging it with the green light on, i.e. reached fully-charged level. Well, I myself just got the HD2 and am pretty satisfied with its battery performance although I haven't really monitored it closely. I just charge it whenever I can.
I recycle my battery about once a month and it really helps.

You are right that it's perfectly acceptable to continually charge the HD2. You can't hurt the battery. I'm just saying that I tried this suggestion (from many other threads) and it seemed to improve my battery situation. It may not work for everyone, but at least it's something.

Peter,
This is the way to treat batteries if you want to get the best performance out of them. There are numerous posts on this issue on here but it does not matter how many times it is mentioned, people still don't read.
What you get is a load of comments about how poor the battery life is without them going through the conditioning process that will get the best out of their battery, irrespective of what type of battery it is.
It is always advised that you go through several cycles of full charge and full discharge, preferably when the battery is new, to get best results, and to do this on a regular basis throughout the life of the battery.
Undertake a good deed for the day; spread the word!

You're right. I've read so many different opinions on this matter, including a lot of research on the Internet. There really does not seem to be any consensus on the matter.
One thing's for sure, I will continue to cycle through full charge and full discharge on a regular basis, perhaps once a month. In the meantime, I'll just top it off every day.
Thanks.

There is a more fundamental point to all this.
Its not the charging and discharging that makes the difference.
Its the working of the battery under load that allows the barry to achieve maximum capacity.
And constantly discharging/draining the battery will have a negative effect over time, shortening life span and usability.
Just charge and use as much as you can.

Strange that all previous phones I had I charged the same way - drain then charge for 12hrs first three times, and then drain / charge as I go - and battery always lasted satisfactorily to me ... I know it is a li-ion battery but for me it works every time and I am sticking to it until they invent better longer lasting batteries

I think he/she means re-cycle as in a charge/discharge cycle
I recently bought a HD2 and was reading very differing advice concerning teaching maximum battery capacity.
-do not let the battery go fully dry, it might harm it (source: wikipedia)
-cycle the battery, drain and fully charge a few times.
-charge as often and much as you can, the battery has no no memory, top it off as you like.
So,,,
I take it now, that the battery likes being used hard, especially when new.
Drain to 7% or so, recharge, drain till 7% or so, a few times.
So do not try to find energy saving mods in the beginning, but work it hard.
I noticed I get a huge battery drain increase when I set the screen backlight to 100 instead of 40. and what a nice display it is
So I figure thats nice way to get to know the HD2, to use it hard and bright, until the battery is 'conditioned' and I know what programs I love the extra brightness in.
I have not been able to drain the battery in a day of expected use yet, always had 23% left or so, which is almost a 4th..
Oh and sorry for off topic, but are any of you guys interested in the ebook reading capabilities on the device at all?
I use a free ebook reader called 'freda' on 'night mode' with black background and red letters, and due to the screen size it is so easy to use the HD2 as an ebook.
I snug into bed and read like 50 pages of an ebook and maybe drift off and the device will auto goto sleep too, if I go first.
It's great.

So I always assumed the battery drain was a hardware or software issue, especially as my X10 would often shut down on 40% power and refuse to stay turned on unless the battery were taken out for 5 minutes.
Rather than buy a new phone I thought I'd try a new battery (I have had the phone since August 2010) - just £3 from ebay, and since then my battery life has been astounding - I'm quite a heavy user, but would almost run out after 8-9 hours despite keeping everything off and only switching on 3g and wifi when necessary. Now I can leave wifi and 3g on all day, leave the phone at medium brightness setting and still have 40% after a 15 hour day of medium-heavy usage.
I used to get idle drain of 1% every 10-15 mins as well (unless the phone was rebooted), but that seems to have disappeared as well.
So before you give up on it, do try a new battery, especially if you've had yours over a year. If there's no effect, you've lost £3 and still have a spare on hand.
Hello friend, could you please post the link where did you buy?
You think people on here throw their phone away because of battery drain, and it doesnt cross their minds to buy a new battery.....instead of buying a new phone.
I just hope your £3 battery doesnt damage your phone........or explode when youve got the phone in your pocket.......or during a call

Whats the size? i have a 1500mAh and a 2600mAh whats ur cpu settings also? looking for a good setup thanks in advance!
Also amazon link for 2600mAh btw its a big battery, and requires its own case which is rather bulky (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-Ericss...TIMS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1331594837&sr=8-1)
This is the 1500 i currently use, still getting the battery sorted with kernels ect
(http://www.amazon.co.uk/KC-Electron...1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1331594882&sr=1-1)
I would just like to confirm what OP wrote. Not only did my new battery (I got the 1800mah one from Mugen, $33) solve my battery drain, it also solved my mysterious reboots, lockups, and heat issues. My phone would regularly get up to 48 celcius, it would result in it automatically shutting off the charging. It was a pain in the butt when using GPS on long trips as I would have to have the AC run straight onto the phone just so it would still charge. It was like this from new. With the new battery it has not budged above 29 celcius with GPS navigation, 100% screen, bluetooth, music and sync all running at the same time, I am shocked!
In order to condition the battery I turned off the screen timeout ("No screen off" in the Market) so I could get it to drain to 5%, it lasts twice as long even with the screen on all the time then it did before I got the battery, feels like a new phone.
beware of cheap batteries
beware of counterfeit batteries. Ive read a bit about cheap batteries being inferior knock offs. You tube has several vids about how to tell the difference
I'm about to buy bigger battery for my x10i. Now I have original 1500 mAh. Do you, who already tested thease 2500 mAh bateries see the difference?

My phone starting doing the exact same thing... shutting down at around 40% so I order the Mugen 1800mAH battery as well. Should get it in a few weeks... I did see much cheaper batteries available but figured you get what you pay for, and the reviews on the Mugen batteries seem to be good so I spend the extra money for it. Looking forward to the extended battery life!
