dead sd-slot - MDA Compact II General

hi,
i'ver got a charmer with a non working sd-slot here.
whatever card i try, it didn't work. also different rom images...
anybody with a sameproblem or may a solution here?

You have to bring it to service center to replace your card reader.
Card reader is so complicated, so I suggest you not to replace by yourself.
..

hm.
as far as i know, the sd-slot ist just a conntector with no addtional hardware components, i don't believe that this will solve it.
only if some pins inside the reader are not in right condition...
i bought a dead one on ebay last days, will heat up my solder iron and replace the slot... may it helps... i'll post the results after receiving the parcel.

You can try to blow into the SD slot. Although I doubt it would work

Urgent help needed, hardware problem??

I've got a lot of problems when my sim card is inserted in the wizard.
Sometimes I can boot the device and it's working OK for a couple of houres and then suddenly it's hanging or crashing.
The screen starts to get white and then stays white.
Then it's almost impossible to boot. I made a video to let you guys see what is happening.
There is WM6 on it right now, but it doesn't matter which rom I use.
Also with the original rom it's crashing. I've send it back to Q-TEK and the fixed it (they say)
but it's still crashing. The only problem is that the phone is out of warranty now, so I can't send it back anymore.
Can you guys help me out? I can't use the device right now because it's crashing all the time.
Video can be found here: http://rapidshare.com/files/21192794/DV070315001.avi
If you are having problems with the full original ROM package (e.g IPL/SPL and OS), then it seems like a hardware problem. As for the warranty, you may want to check with 'them', some products have a 'renew' warranty on the latest fix. E.g., if your phone is fixed today, it will have a new warranty (3 months or 1 year) staring tomorrow.
Unfortunately I had some water damage after they tried to fix it. (3 months later it got into the water)
The device is working as before and don't have any problems because of the water, but I've got a big red paper under the sim card.
So no warranty anymore
Do you think it's the gsm module?
Can I buy that "somewhere" to replace that part?
OKay, found a site where I can buy wizard parts.
Do you think I need to replace one of the boards?
And which one do you think?
There is a mainboard and one board that's smaller (with ribbons on it)
It's obvious it's something to do with the sim card. Try cleaning the contacts on both the phone and the card and if you can try another SIM card.
Failing that, I would suggest carefully stripping it down and sell the individual parts.
Use the money you get to buy another Wizard or another phone of your choice.
Just a thought. There are alot of people who would buy the components to replace broken plastics, screens, speakers...... etc
The sim card is OK. I tried many sim cards.
All the same problem. It's just something in my wizard
I can buy a new mainbord, but I don't know which one I must buy. There are 2 of them..

Mini-sd slot broke

Today I removed my minisd card and put it back in shortly after, but something went horribly wrong
Somehow I broke the thing that holds the card in position so now it wont stick in.. so I tried to make it stuck in with a paper which works but it doesn't get recognized then, I guess the mechanism which holds the card always turns on a switch thats tells my wizard to start reading the card
Does anyone got any idea to fix it, cause this sux big time (I bought the phone a few months ago for €200), I cant find my receipt but ill try to get a copy of the shop .
Im so pissed right now
Nobody knows, the warranty is overdue
Could I open the phone and maybe fix it myself?
I got the service manual but not the tools, anyone ever seen the inside of the phone, would it even be possible to fix it?
bump ...
similar problem
Hi there
i had a similar problem - had to buy another htc 8125 and unfortunately it came with a broken slot for the minisd card. At first i thought i wasn't pressing the card enough for the thing to click and hold it. Then i realised it was broken. As far as i could see from the little opening there was a white slider which is pushed down by the wider side of the minisd card. It has a spring behind it and somehow it has to click in down position and hold the card.
i tried to push it down with a very very small screwdriver and understand the way it worked. With my bad luck i pushed a little harder and broke that white slider. It just broke in the middle and one part stayed down and the other was pushed up by the spring. It broke exactly at the place where it was pushed by the memory card. So my card was not jumping anymore out - it just stayed in but was not recognised by the phone.
I didn't know what else to do so i found some instructions on how to open the phone and went for it with the hope to reach the memory card slot an hopefully fix it. HTC has taken good care of the stupid slot. It is soldered to the motherboard and nothing much could be done. There are 4 points that hold it but i didn't go that far to unsolder it (didn't know how many springs and other parts would jump out of it). Anyways - what i noticed was the following:
there are two small "plates" at the bottom of the slot. Wheny ou isnert the card they touch and i think this is what makes the slot active and knowing that there is a card in it. I had some dirt betwen them and that was preventing them from making a contact. After i removed that small piece of dirt and inserted the card it worked like a charm. It stays so tight in there now that i hardly can get it out - which is not that bad because i can always use the usb cable to transfer whatever i want.
I think i still have those manuals for opening the phone, so if you decide to go this far and can't find them i can send you an email.
Hope i was of any help
There's no need to open or disassemble the phone to repair the slot, just apply a thin layer of any adhesive tape around it but make sure you do not cover the connectors and insert the card firmly in the slot.
Cheers !
But well even if I push it in it doesnt get detected(I added a piece of paper to hold it in but it didnt detect it still).
I think ill buy a torx screwdriver and open it.
I'll still advise you to check the mini sd in some other phone,if it still doesn't get detected than get a new one or it may need to be reformatted.Opening up the phone might lead onto more problems.
Cheers !

Please help! I can´t believe this...

Dear friends, I have my Advantage for three days with me (I am very happy with it), but today I wanted to install the mini sd card, and for my surprise, the card adaptor does not fit into the Advantage slot!!!
The adaptor is Sandisk brand...I'm really desperate. Anybody with similar problem? Please, I really appreciate your help....
Are you sure you have it in the right way? Label side down dude...
Yes, label side down, golden contacts up...I'm really shocked how can HTC sell a product with this MAJOR flaw!...Tell me my friend, you can put the card on slot easily or you have to do some force, or special positioning etc..Just to figure it out..
mine just glides in easy. i have a transflash (microsd)card with a minisd adapter. are you sure its a mini sd
Sometimes it takes a second to find the right angle but it slides it with no almost no force at all.
I can't believe that this is true too. Mine slides in and out easily without problem. If it does not fit, it is probably a fake card, or you have not inserted it the right way.
this may seem like a stupid question but theres not a card or blank one in there already is there?
what do you mean by card adaptor? the minisd doesnt need an adaptor to fit in the athena
ROTFLMAO LOL LOL LOL
Yeah right, like HTC got the mini SD slot wrong, by accident. EITHER
1) YOU are doing it wrong
or
2) YOUR card is a cheap fake and the wrong proportions !
there is not really any scope for anything other than the above ! either way the problem is with you not with your phone.
Pics !
Please : First , came down !...take it easy.
Second : Please take some pictures , post and there ...all cann see your trouble .
When you,re say...mini SD adaptor , what you try to say ? .
Advantage have a mini SD slot , im like much others ...use a Micro SD with mini SD adaptor. It,s true that in a forst time is not easy find the righ position...but . PLEASE dont force ..maybe you can broke something.
Please..Take some pictures and post again.
All Have solution...some hard...or some easy...but all have !
Waiting your pictures.
FranCoke.
i seriously doubt if htc actually shipped out a product that has a faulty card slot. i'm sorry but i agree with the others. aside from this, you did say:
"Yes, label side down, golden contacts up.."
do you mean that when inserting the card the words "mini sd" or whatever's on the label is on the underside? and that the copper contacts are facing upwards? if yes, then you're inserting the card wrong. the copper leads are supposed to be on the bottom while the label is facing up.
or unless you bought one of those cards used for ericsson phones...
i use both mini sd and microsd with mini adaptor on my unit...and i've never had this issue before
Do Sandisk make a Micro SD to Mini SD adapter? - all I have got are Micro SD to full size SD adaptors and these most certainly will not fit the Athena - Mike

Yes, Sandisk does make a micro to mini adapter (I have one).
I had a similar problem and went for a "Mini" SD not a "Micro Mini" or an adapter type. Just make sure you have a "Mini" card and not a Micro with an adapter...TJ
Thank you guys for your replies. Well, I'm not insane ..
Thanks TrekkerJmm comment, who has the same problem, at least I have a hope, so I should get a minisd and try, seems the adaptor (microsd to minisd) is causing the problem. I took the pictures, sorry my camera stinks.
Also, when I was considering to buy the Advantage, I have read about a folk who had to return his unit due the same problem (I can't find the post right now, can't remember what forum was it)...
I really can't understand why HTC don't just include a regular sd slot...anyway, I hope I can find a solution...
I read about it too. He had to send his athena back for repairs.

Maybe the one the fellow sent back for repair was replaced with a refurb and the returned one has now made it back to the top of the replacement pool!
Brad
youre trying to put a real sd card into a mini sd slot.
[edit] sorry for the previous harshness[/edit]
I'm digging a hole and put my head on it...the adapter I'm using is for minisd to full sd....I AM A FOOOOLLLLLL
Gulpppp
Thanks....(back to my hole)
Don't feel bad..as long as you got it working that's all that matters.. ...TJ

SD reader busted

OK now its time for a 2 case problem involving the SD reader
1st:
The card stopped staying in one day so i had to start proping it up with a peice of paper acting as a wedge
2nd:
2 weeks later(yesterday) i removed the SD card and put some new music on it for on the the move, When i put the sdcard back into my device it jammed so i puled it out hoping the locking mechanism started working again. I turns out i some how managed to bend a pin inside the reader X'( I decided earlier today to dismantle my device and look into fixing my device and found the pins had snapped and jammed inside my devices reader.
I thought about trying to solder a bodge contact on to it but thought to seek advice here. would it be easier to have it repaired? or to see about buying an vario with a busted screen and swaping my devices screen with the busted one?
You guys have any other ideas feel free to help as im in a real big pickle cos i love using my vario(wizard, htc) as my mp3 player and all around studio when im not at my PC...
PLEASE HELP !!!!!!!

I think you should first estimate total cost on both reparing and geting a busted screen WIzard and then think for which you should go i say if Busted Screen Wizard is cheaper go for it else try getting it repaired. I hope i helped. TC

SIM card missing

I am very sad as I now have the 'SIM card missing' problem with my Uni . So I am now seriously thinking of moving on to, maybe, a Touch Pro 2 as it's going to cost too much to get my Uni fixed and I don't think there's an easy/cheap solution to this problem (reading other threads).
Just when I thought I had the ideal ROM and Apps with the device!!
Migrating
Shame to hear that Jonny
But if I can give you an advice, go for Rhodium and it will help you to relief the pain for the loss of MAGNIFICENT Universal
I´ve got 3 Unis, one with broken Display, one that is ok and one with 128mb RAM. the one with 128mb ram says "SIM Card missing", i resoldered the Sim-Contacts but that wont work. Is there any Solution fpr this Problem?
Best regards
MrMmmkay
The only solution I've seen so far is to re-heat the solder under the radio chip that's responsible for the SIM. This seems to have 100% success in the forums, but I don't know anyone who can do it - and paying for it is too expensive compared to the price of the device in my opinion. I may just try with my solder iron and see if that gives any success!
The other suggestion was spraying with contact cleaner, however this only seemed to work in one instance.
OK, i think i first try to clean the Motherboard with contact cleaner, when this doesnt work im looking out for someone with hotair
