Touch Dual new user, Questions inside. - Touch Dual, MDA Touch Plus General

Hello everyone, im glad i found a spot to learn more about my new phone arriving tommorrow
So im getting my touch dual tommorrow after much thought about the dual or a N95 but because im at Uni doing Systems engineering i thought the dual would provide me with more usefullness, so my problem now is i never had a Pocket PC, but as ido with my Pc, software and electronics i like tweaking everything a bit to my style, so the first things i noticed and would really like some help in some posts i noticed at the forums like:
Whats SSPL, USPL and HardSPL??
What about the Touch Surface?? is that like a Windows OS modifier of some sort?? What does it exactly do??
Basically im a curious guy and like i said i like tweaking stuff and having it my way, so the first things im gonna do is try to istall programs/software/tweaks for the phone, ill have no problems installing it has i have alot of knowledge about computer / OS's etc i just never had a Pocket PC.
And to finish this huge post (sry about that ), i would like to know if you guys can reccomned some software, for example if theres a better file explorer, a better Movie or MP3 player or even any software you would reccomend me to install for someone that likes tweaking and knowing alot of the hardware and software information, and lastly could you guys reccomend me to a webpage where i could learn more about the thechinal side of Pocket Pcs or just the dual??
Thanks for helping a Noob out.

My Wing Sucks Whats Up With This Slow Device

Ok, I have my Wing and im running touch it... its cool but this device is still slow... i have it over clocked and pagepooled... my brother has 8125 and its so much faster and i started to think that it was something wrong with my phone... Is anyone else having this problem? imean i touch the screen and it does not respond in realtime it sometimes takes up to 3 or 4 seconds... when writing messages it takes forever its just got to the point where it is very irritating... is there anything i can do to get my wing up to par where it wont seem sooooo slow?
Im not sure. Im overclocked and have pagepool at 6 and mine runs pretty quick.
Sounds like you may be overclocking it a little too far. Try lowering the OC and see if that helps.
Try installing a new Rom.
My T-mobile Wing used to be EXTREMELY slow with the stock T-mobile Rom on there ... it would always freeze and give me that little round hourglass thing all the time for the dumbest crap ... like checking new SMS msgs...but the moment I installed the PDAVIET v14 rom on there, the difference in speed was instantaneous. Afterwards, I installed batterystatus and overclocked it to 273mhz, and it runs like a charm. Installing the PDAVIET rom was the best thing I ever did, and I don't know how I survived this long without it!
^^^ thanks... how did you ever get v14 to install? i thought there were problems getting it onto the wingand it was missing programs...
My friend helped me do it, so unfortunately I don't have the exact process. From my understanding, you have to get past the CID check in order to install it since it's not an official tmobile rom.
Yeah mine is kinda slow too, do you really recomend installing that Touchflow thing (i dont know much about anything, just got my wing yesterday).

TouchFlo is just a specific application that's originates from the HTC Touch device... but people have ported it over into Rom's built for most htc devices.
Here is a demo of the touchflo, so you can see what it is.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQ8TQ9Rr_7E
The touchflo cube itself is pointless to me ... it's just something that came out to make it 'prettier' and IMO it's just a gimic aimed towards the iPhone. I DO like that you can scroll now without the use of the scrollbars... and I wouldn't be able to live without that now that I have it.
I DO reccommend installing a 3rd party Rom on your phone, and you currently have the option of 2 roms.
There are other roms out there, but you want to make sure you install one that is specifically made for the wing, bc if you don't you're going to run into problems such as, the keys on the keyboard not lining up. The Tmobile wing is the HTC "atlas" which is a variant of the HTC Herald. The keyboard on the Wing (atlas) is different than the one of the herald, so when you start using certain keys/symbols, you get something else.
There are currently 2 3rd party Roms that are made specifically for the Wing , and they are
Touch-IT
and
PDAVIET
I am currently running the PDAVIET v14 rom and you will be surprised as to how much faster your wing will run just by installing a NON tmobile rom.... on top of that, you can overclock your wing with a program called batterystatus which will overclock the processor from the default 201 to whatever you want. Suggestion, Dont' overlock to more than 273-286 or so, bc your wing will crash.... but you can find some posts on this site where users discuss their clocking speeds.

The Touch-IT rom final just got released today, and is available for download here.
Touch-IT for The Wing Full and Lite Ed.
I am actually in the middle of installing this Rom as I am typing, but I have heard really good things about it ... so I am anxious to try it out.
I suggest you take a look at Tyler's guide to Wing Modding.
Newbies Guide to Herald
and also take a look at the Herald WIKI page which may help answer a lot of questions you may have.

Wow thanx a lot, really helped me out a lot.
Not a lot of people will go all out like that to a newbie, so i really appreciate it .
Not a prob bro. Let us know if there's anything else we can help you with. That's the beauty of this place ... everyone helps each other... and I enjoy helping out, bc people help me out when I need it.

Hey Duprade,
Since I ran into a lot of problems bricking/unbricking the last time that I installed a new rom, I don't want to rush through it this time. I am kind of in the middle of the two roms that you said earlier, the touch_it and the pdaviet 14. Could you update us with your experience with both and which one you recommend personally. i am kind of leaning towards the pdaviet since i don't want some programs that come with the touch_it but i would like to hear someone more experiences comments comparing them as well. thanks in advance.... by the way my device is locked does that mean that i can not install the pdaviet v14 i thought the issue was resolved?
Totaly Lost Man! Help!!!!
I am currently running the PDAVIET rom. I was experimenting with the Touch-IT rom, but I am used to the PDAVIET rom and since I use my phone for work and all my work correspondence comes directly to my phone, I have to have it in working order at all times.
I would reccommend that you install both ROMs and test them both out to see which one you like best, because until you try them, you won't know which one YOU will like best.
If you follow the link I posted for the PDAVIIET rom, just follow the directions for the installation that I posted.
The Touch-IT rom installs using the ASERG method, which you can find the directions on installing it when you download the necessary files.
Okay, without flashing a new rom, and having to reinstall all my programs (speaking of that, Sprite backup didn't work for me, different story-comments?)
Is there any way to speed it up? Disable startup processes?
I've had to reset mine about 2-5 times in 48 hours...P I E C E O F C R A P...(not really a POS, just pissing me off)

there has always been probelms with this program, a shame cuz I heard they implemented a new feature allowing you to restore even after switching roms
Is there any way to speed it up? Disable startup processes?
for sure, just navigate to \windows\startup...a simple search of what is in that folder will let you know what you use and what you can delete.

A new favourite tool of mine since having the herald is sktools. I never really used it before but there is an application associated with sktools that allows you to imitate hibernation of the device which will bring your program memory to just below what it was after boot up.
hope that helps....maybe one day i'll even make a vanilla rom (hopefully someone will make one quiker) so that these problems with it becoming slow disappear.
cheers
Now the recent problem I've been having is that when the device slows down, and freezes up, it unfreezes and theres a part of the screen that seems to be "stuck" in every app I use, until I restart...WtF?
EDIT: Oh, and SKTools looks good, but I'm not paying for programs. I'm broke just from buying the Herald
Ok...so i have done quite a bit of reading on this forum for the past couple months. I purchased a Wing from tmobile and absolutly love it. I have since then changed to the touchflo rom and installed the battstatus and it runs like a champ, couldnt ask for more.
hey i'm new to this stuff and i tried installing a new rom but my phone is now bricked i believe, anyway to unbrick it?
That's why you are a real gem of this place. I see you always answer people's questions (many answers could be found by a simple search) promptly and patiently, including mine.
I'm waiting to get a good deal on a 4gb+ memory card, then I will try to install the PDAVIET rom, looks thrilling to me.
Thanks bro!! If you are in the same city as mine (Milwaukee), I'd buy you drinks.

Thank you for the comments.
Regarding your Rom, I'd actually suggest trying out ITJE's TouchIT 2.3 over the PDAVIET Rom at this time.

Pimping up the MDA Vario iii

Right... Firstly, let me say HAWT DAMN, there are some seriously hawt ppl out there that know their stuff.
Back to business... I been surfing this site, youtube and a few others when I came to the STARTLING revelation that my Vario iii is pretty damn boring.
I currently have the HTC Today software, the SuS2 key lock thing and besides having Doom and my TouchBrowser(which gives my internet browser iPhone type capabilites when surfing the web)
What I would really love to do is setup the Cube, or UltimateLaunch, maybe some moving wallpapers, different fonts for the clock on the SuS2.
Where do I begin and whats all this hype out ROM and flashing it?
Where would I also find a registery editor?
well using the search usually helps start to find something in the direction of what you want to tweak your phone out with
if you wanna do something like a cube(which is old now) you might wanna browse around in the development and hacking section and see what you like in there people here are pretty good able giving tutorials aobut how to install software and what not

New user New Elf

Hi all, iv had a wonder around the forum mannyyy helpful users around doing grate things with the mobile. I’ve just got a HTC Elfin a few days ago and been looking for things to do with it, things to update, new ways of using it. I was wondering if there was a list of things anyone feels i should put on a brand new one? such as any updates, new browser anything you guys and girls think are necessities of just grate to have on the phone?
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated
Edit-
Operator version- 23.227.1.801
ROM version- 2.27.80.1 WWE
ROM date- 12/11/07
Radio version- 03.18.90
Protocol version- 4.1.13.60
Hello and congrats to your new phone! You will like it
I would suggest you to get the Core Player because i think its the best Mediaplayer for Pocket pc!
Look here for information!
Additionally i would recommend to use the Total commander file explorer because the windows one sucks !
You can find the Totalcommander app Here
There are maaaaany other tons of useful apps you just need imagination!
Have fun ruling the world
I would recommend you Onyx or gullum's ROM with manila2d and opera mobile (if it's not included in ROM).
woohoo...another member for elf forum
welcome aboard buddy....
like you said this is the place to be...where great customization on our device can be done
but there is one golden rule and my number one advice. pls mind the capital...but you really need to accept this advice.
GET TO KNOW YOUR DEVICE NOW. DONT THINK ABT FLASHING OR ROM UPDATING NOW. BECAUSE YOU GOTTA LEARN YOUR DEVICE FIRST AND KNOW HOW TO USE THE LITTLE FUNCTION AVAILABLE ON THE DEVICE
A LOT OF NEW ELF USERS GET THEMSELVES INTO TROUBLE WITHOUT KNOWING WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND PERFORM UPGRADES JUS LIKE THAT..AND THEIR DEVICES END UP DEAD
SO ENJOY AND LEARN YOUR DEVICE...THEN VIST HERE TO LEARN ABT UPDATING AND TROUBLESHOOTING IN ADVANCE....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=406721
BELIEVE ME...THIS REALLY DOES SAVE A LOT OF TIME
now the big capital part is over...i suggest u try Spb Mobile Shell 2.1 to get you started on customizing your device...this cud really get u to like ur device the better
and yep the post above me....says it all..abt Onyx and gullum's rom
and this is why i mentioned the advice...remembere ur elf needs to be unlocked to accept any SOFTWARE update...and u need to unlock it with the proper USPL intended for your device
so like i said...take some time to learn the stuffs here...dont throw urself into any ROM upgrading
once again...welcome aboard
Thanks all , so far today iv unlocked my phone and put the core player on it , had several issues with the wonderful microsucks ActiveSync at first not connecting after asking me to key in its pin, then just being a random pain and not connecting.. for a few hours on and off... least i can now change from Orange and back to O2 and claim £80 worth of free credit from them ^_^
as sugested im going to get use to the phone first before updating, i know what i can be like with idle hands.. acidently killed a motherboard of a rather new and expensive PC because i wanted to update the bios because it was 3am and i wasnt tired.. ye that didnt turn out so gd as the PSU blew mid flash..
Id just like to say a thanks to everyone hear and to keep up the grait work , think next ill have a look at new browsers and the 25 free softwares see whats fun

noob need help moding new wing

Hi noob here,
My gf has had her wing for a few months now. i've seen videos of custom wings but have no idea where to start. i have read post after post and tutorial after tutorial to the point that i feel cross eyed. after reading some posts on here i realized that there are different ways to go about doing what she wants. i am looking for an easy way to mod her wing. she wants the finger scrolling like the iphone (i downloaded touch flow1.4, but i cant get it to work.) i also have omap 2.0 and alot if vito apps, opera 9.5 downloaded. we just did a reset to factory and we put all of her pics and old stuff on my pc. i'm reading about flashing but it kinda scares me...
Any help would be great.

Android .exe is there one?

Hi all have had my HD2 for 3 months now and have all the usual issues and it has been back to Vodafone a few times I dont really want to get rid of it as it is perfect size etc for vids and calendar sms for and an old codger like me for work with bad eyesight..
Heres the question I am not brain of britain at this sort of thing and want to know if there is an Android .exe I can run from my micro sd card that has all the upgraded stuff you need for a stable phone........I can add apps and that sort of thing but my technical knowledge is somewhat vague....I dont understand what Froyo is and your terms for radio this that and the other and could be surfing on here for days and not understand much....
I understand the dual boot bit as in the Windows operating system ( or not as the case is )
and Android effectively runs over the top of it but thats as far as I can get...
Any help would be gratefully received..
Regards Lee F
ps has anyone else had their phone dial out evertime you play a track on Nitro?....I came back from France to find each time I changed a song it dialed hope for 10 seconds and had a huge bill of .75p connection charge some 90 odd times......
what ....when ...how...im confused
Android is in fact a whole other system compared to Windows Mobile, and as of now, it isn't completely finished/'out of beta' yet. It is still less stable than Windows Mobile is on your device.
What I do suggest you to do is take a look at this thread, and get started with HSPL'ing your phone, so you can install a custom ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=609477
The phone dialing out is one thing it shouldn't be doing for sure.
Actually sounds like a trojan horse.
Did you change the song with your wired headset? Because it can be used to dial the last dialed number that could be your problem. Also some earphones/speakers without a button can sometimes initiate it when you move the plug around....

Well, that's no way to treat a fellow! Y'ought to explain to 'im.
Android on the HD2 is not finished yet (and will always require things like flashing or other not noob safe things) and has therefore some bugs, problems and limitations. For someone who isn't that good with technical things and hasn't read/understood all those guides it could cause some problems and misunderstandings etc. I can imagine someone sending in his HD2 for repair because his ambient light sensor doesn't work in Android...
...or at least opening some threads here and asking tons of dumb questions that could be easily answered by reading the stickies or using the search.

There is no such .exe file. To Run Android you only need to run a .exe and a few files with it. But without a suitable Radio (the part of you operating system that is responsible for Wifi, Bluetooth, GPS and everything else that sends/receives data over the air), you will get problems. But finding and updating a suitable Radio sadly isn't as easy as running a .exe
But there are many guides on it which should help you, in case you still want to do it.
Buddy,
Right at the top of the forum here there are sticky threads that contain all the information you need to get HD2 running android. Please post you're questions there instead of opening a new thread.
