Vista hangs on startup after Windows update - Shift General

Today I installed a Windows update that I was prompted to do. I should say that SP1 has been installed and happily running for a couple of weeks now, and that I am running a Spanish version of Vista.
It installed 9 updates and then configured 3 more components after the restart. After a further restart all seems to be going well until just before the logon screen (black screen) where the mouse freezes and nothing happens (I gave it a good 20 minutes) thus forcing a hard reset. I unplugged the USB hub and took out an SDHC card but all to no effect.
My Shift was pretty well updated including the new graphics driver with the registry hack to get it working, so I believe the updates from M$ are pretty recent. I note that my XP desktop PC had an update of various components too.
I booted up in safe mode and selected the "recommended" restore point which was for a Windows update. After the restore and restart, bang, the same problem!
With that failed I chose a restore point prior to both sets of Windows updates. On restart voilà! All is now working. Phew!!
Anyone else get this issue or is it just me? Anyone got an idea which update might be the cause of the issue?

Hmmm, I changed my Windows update settings to allow me to choose the updates I wish to install. The update listed that seems to be the most likely is a new Intel Video driver update.
Would this be a "real" new video driver? Or could it be that due to the registry hack of exporting and then importing two HKEYs after a previous video driver update it has confused Windows causing it to hang?
I would guess the point where it hangs is when Vista is about to be displayed which seems to confirm the video driver theory.

I too had problems with the new updates (on a german version shift): strange behavior during the install process as a screen flickering between black and different resolutions and after all an abrupt shutdown. after restart Windows run fine but shagcontrol didn't work. Following Daniels instructions I removed shagcontrol and installed it again - problem solved (Thanks Daniel!). I guess this issue has not been caused by the security updates but rather by the optional windows mobile update.
At last I had to update my internet security program (Trend Micro) due to "incompatibility problems with this Windows version".
Thus a lot of time waisted but fortunately my favorite toy works again.

On many a blogs recomendation I removed the Trend Micro AV software and downloaded the free AVG software instead. You can pick up a copy at the below link:
http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html?tag=lst-3
It works just fine, is simple to use and has given no problems.

Be careful .. AVG is one of the worst free antivirus ... (after Live One Care Beta ), I advise you to download antivir on www.free-av.com it's one of the best (if not "THE BEST") free antivirus.

Hi.
I ve the spanish version too. Today Windows Update downloaded 10 updates too but all worked fine. video driver installed too with registry hack(but as you know driver version is overwitten and windows update will try to install it again, and again and...)
Dani

looks like the best thing to do is as said to set it for u to choose what to install or to turn off windows update all together. should be having less issues then.

Mine updated nicely.
9 Of course, because the video was already done, and he did not even offer that one.

Activpync wont install on my computer...

Any reasons why not? Im on Windows XP yet it comes up a warning saying that it will only work on computers with XP!
This is very frustrating...
Is there any other way to link my phone up to my computer? I would really like to transfer some music onto it
Have you got SP2 installed?
I cant, I dont have a genuine Windows.
Do you NEED SP2? Surely there is a way around this...
I can download activesync 3.8 but I think I need the drivers for the phone?
Any help... PLEASE!?!
I've had the same problem with my XP version
impossible also to install an update from windows site
I had to install an update on my windows 2000, that worked
and then activesync 4.1 finally worked 100%
other way to work around that was to download things on XP
put them on my old SPV E200 with activesync 3.7 wich works
and then send the things on my SPV M3000 by bluetooth...

Or get a Legit copy of Windows XP!!!
You run a pirate operating system then compalin when software doesn't work with it properly.
Come back when you have a license. Is your Wizard stolen as well?
hmmm dude...
the post isnt if its right or wrong to steal windows! Its to do with how we can cheat them more!
I think the only way round this is to download a crack to get xp2.
If I could find the drivers for the phone would it work on activesync 3.8?
PS. No my phone is not stolen, Im sure you have a copied CD in your collection somewhere too.
There's a vast number of copied XP versions with SP2 pre-installed available out there. Should be all you need.
I can get a legal copy of windows xp from somewhere...
But to install it would I loose all of my documents?
chrisredmayne: it would be in your interest to backup your docs (and whole system) before installing SP2, even if your windows is legit. It's a big install!
You could make your own SP2 install disk, by "slipstreaming" SP2 into a windows install disk. Also, there are cracks for SP2, and there are also cracks for trial versions of windows.
I imagine the ActiveSync install could probably be cracked to skip the SP2 check, but it's not a long term solution.
I don't recommend any of this. When you start using SP2 and Windows in the future, you'll have to have a legitimate copy to download certain updates from Microsoft, so you might as well get hold of a legit windows, one way or the other. OEM copies are stupidly cheap, and you can even buy an OEM Media Center install for a small amount of money.

there is a piece of software at
http://www.softick.com/pocket-pc/cardexport2 called "card export II"
allows you to make the wizard look like a mass storage device, so activesync is not needed to transfer to the storage card.
ps (takes a few goes to install)
I dont get how to install it, only looked at it for a minute though. I unpacked all of the files, and it asks to open a prc file? and press hotsync on the cradle... (Guess that means phone).... Stumped
if i remember correctly .prc files are for palm user's not pocket pc.
i think you have downloaded the wrong version!
Use cardreader to download into mSD, anything you want:
Music, apps, but you need cab files to install it from mSD card.

aliendad, can you confirm you actually have Softick Card Export II for Pocket PC working on a wizard device? I have tried this on my k-jam and it didnt work at all. Even when i contacted Softick support they have said they are still working on a WM5 / Wizard compatible version.
EDIT: i just went and downloaded v2.10 of CE2PPC (which funnily enough isnt even mentioned on the website). In the setup i downloaded, i found there is a WM5 ARM install cab however this still fails to install on my Wizard / K-JAM as with all the previous versions.
Thanks
Chris
You need a minimum of SP1. You do not need SP2. For ActiveSync 4.1. If you cannot pass the genuine validation tool you need to enable automatic updates and to install them automatically. You cannot use the Windows Update site. If you set to install Critical Updates automatically it should bring down SP2 (as it is considered a Critical Update)
Also you can just download SP2 (the full install) and you should be able to install it. It should not require validation as you can install it if not connected to the network.
Although the above may not work if you truly have a messed up version of XP. I am assuming you have either a cracked version of a legit copy or an invalid product code.
I have read about people cracking XP Media Center 2005 and all worked well until the Genuine Validation tool. Then somebody came out with a crack for that.
Good Luck
I just got a disk with XP so I think its a fake validation code that I have.
I downloaded the SP2 from the windows update site, and from a random site somewhere that I searched on google for.
The problem was that when I tried to install it stopped after a few minutes and said that it wasnt a genuine windows. So Im guessing any version that I download will have the same check on it.
But I shall try and turn my updates on later and see if it works, or give that other program a go!

yes, is does work, had to do a lot of soft reseting but now have a quick access icon at the bottom of the screen to select card export or active sync.
a few days ago did a hard reset, and installed card export as one of the first installs and it installed much more smoothly that the earlier install.
ps great prog makes things much easier, can't install activesync at work.

Any one successed to syncing with Vista RTM??

Although it was working with RC2, strangely, it doesn't with RTM, the driver is installed but only the file transfere is working. I can see an icon of my JJ in computer (ex. my computer) and when click on it, i can browse the JJ ram and the storage card only, but there is no any syncing capabilities. Any one has an idea about that problem. May i am going to try the old RC1 trick:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...roductID=7C1FA894-B2C5-41BE-8D97-E145DD2A883B
Still there is no respoonse after 26 viewers, does this mean that there is no one has installed the new vista RTM release or I am asking a selly question?

Yes, I synced my HERMES with http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...6a-a72d-4aef-9663-31ce2fefbada&DisplayLang=en this tool, but sometimes don't, lot of crashes...
Just have a try:
disable any Anti-Virus and Firewall softwares.
I tried downloading the sync tools beta, but fiind it hangs outlook (2007).
I'm going to give it a try just running wirelessly and see how I get on.
The same don't know why it's not working...

I tried it, it worked, thanks. The difference is that i followed the trick mentioned above also, i added the registery key WHOS, then installed the WMDC beta program, so, will try to use the WMDC program only without the registery in another installation.
Now I sync 95% of times, I just unchecked in settings-> connections->USB to PC-> use enhanced USB
I have managed to get it working after having reflashed the rom on my phone (probably not required) and re-installing the Windows Mobile Device Centre beta 3.
I think the trick is to make sure your phone can connect to Vista OK before you install the WMDC software and then install the software with the phone connected.
Good luck
Are you also able to flash / upgrade the phone using Vista RTM and MDC beta 3? I'm not

Windows Live Problems

Hi guys, I installed the Windows Live Package from http://www.live-messenger.nl/download/WindowsLive.PPC2005_ARM.CAB. It worked perfect, now i wanted to know how much memory this app costed, so i uninstalled it again. But when i tried to install it again, it failed When i open the cab, it loads approx. 5 seconds in the installer, then the installer says Installation of WindowsLive.PPC2005_ARM.CAB has failed Anybody suggestions how i can get this work??
p.s. Without a hard reset
I have also done the same thing and get the same error. I had to uninstall Windows Live Mobile because I was getting an error everytime I tried to launch Live Messenger. Now I can't re-install it again.
I have 2 main ideas:
1st.: Microsoft is cutting the service from these "un-official" releases of their software, as they are trying now to sell Windows Mobile 6 and Windows Live can't be downloaded or installed let's say "legally".
2nd. (which doesn't affect the first one): Microsoft recognizes the WLM software as not pre-installed or being installed on a Windows Mobile 5 device and tells the client to get "blocked", I mean, it writes some values to the registry and prevents being launched or installed again showing the empty error message I had before unistalling it.
Someone can verify any of my ideas or bring a solution to have WLM working again on our WM5 devices?
Thanks in advance.
Romero i've found the problem! I got my hands on an UNdated UNrestricted version. As you said mic. just cut the WLM off. I do not knowe why but here is the fix http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=36364&d=1175459584

neither of those are correct, the reason is thats its a beta and expired at the beginning of the month. therefore you cant run the program or install it. just get a new beta version by signing up to Microsoft Connect or use the older version thats been extracted from wm6 thats floating around here.
Try it, like the worker:
WindowsLive.PocketPC_50_arm.cab
Thank you very much ASerg!
The version The Dutchman posted was in English, but I find out that the Aserg's file was several kB bigger... That made me think and decided to install this bigger one and finally got Windows Live Mobile working in Spanish, just like before my beta had expired.
So thank you again guys!

New driver on Windows update

Hi
When i ran windows update on my new shift i could see there was a few new drivers from HTC, i havent updated them yet. has anyone tryid to put them on? any problems?
also i would like to hear more about sp1, in another thread one has a problem with shagctrl after sp1 install, is this a common problem after sp1?
Regards,
Allan Boegild Pedersen
I installed all the pre SP1 drivers I saw on windows update. I found a problem with the video driver myself. I posted about it and several others had problems as well.
here is the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=378305
Hi,
I installed SP1 and istalled all available updates.
After a few (yes, more then one or two...) reboots, everything works fine. Also the screen resolution change etc. I did have to reinstall shagctrl, but that was easy.
One of the updates is for the screen pen and gives you some more feedback when tapping the screen. It´s good.
I only had a problem with my USB tool connection, but I am not sure if it is because of SP1 or something else....
Gonna do a full reset and see...

Vista SP1

How to upgrade to SP1? In my computer (property), I don't find SP1 under Vista Business, that means I haven't graded to SP1 right?
I have tried Windows upgrade so many times. There is no file for me to upgrade. Thanks for your help!

strange question friend very strange. the language and country of your system?
Have you upgraded the drivers from the htc web site ?
sp1 did not show up for me untill I had upgraded the drivers.
Microsoft identifies some conditions where SP1 doesn't show in Windows Update. I had the same problem. There are two versions of SP1 available thru Microsoft update web site dedicated for 32 bit Vista Business depending on your OS language. Spending 2 minutes with Google you'd find it quicker then posting your question. Note the file is more than 400MB and install takes some time. My Vista is stable afterwards, however still hasn't fixed my vanishing WLAN Marvell Device w/Bluetooth.
Regarding WLAN/BT problems maybe anyone has faced same problem? WLAN is simply not found on Device Manager list although latest WLAN Marvell drivers are installed. Funny thing is that during drivers installation, both devices appears on the Device list for 5-10 seconds (up&running) and dissapears right before installation process ends asking for restart. after restart no devices at all again... tried replacing sdbus.sys sd8686.sys with older 2007y version, no change. anyway keep fighting...

Not yet...I am doing it now, however I have a problem now.
Before I installed finger sensor driver, I have got a message to remove the old version, then I did and reinstalled the new one.
Now before I log in to Windows, I always get this strange message, what to do?
Access violation at address 00409D0C in module 'CompPtcVUI.exe' Read of address 000000B8
Thanks
Hey are you reinstalling drivers only to see SP1 in Windows Update? tricky my friend...
if yes I'd rather suggest shortcut to
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...6D-5EBB-413B-89C9-CB3D06D12674&displaylang=en
however read that driver's upgrade is worth considering before SP1 installation, which (SP1) on some Shifts runs fine while on others simply spoils things...
read the same about latest HTC drivers )
hope both htc and MS updates will just be fine on your unit. greetz
