enterbootloader and hard reset program - the first step to fully unlocking the shift - Shift General

well i reverse engineered some things for the shift (though this was done without a device, just pure disassembly of some drivers and programs), and first results are here - i wrote the initial version a program that can enter bootloader mode, which is initiated from vista without WM running at all, and hence can hard reset your WM on the shift if something goes wrong even if WM doesn't boot anymore.
this is obviously just a first version, it will look a lot nicer later, and will be a lot more user friendly too. but for that a lot more testing will be needed which is very hard without the device itself and also development is slowed down without access to a test device -- more donations for shift project will help us get the device a lot faster.
for now it's a command line app so you need to run cmd.exe on vista first, then launch it from there. and then when you entered bootloader mode you can run mtty for vista (download below), then issue "task 28" (without the quotes) from mtty to hard reset.
please do not ever try issuing task 2a! never! it will brick the device!
so anyway..
download: http://hpcmonex.net/ECShift.exe
you can type ecshift.exe -help to get command info
but the ones that are actually useful commands:
ecshift.exe -bl enters bootloader
ecshift.exe -mode0 exits bootloader (do a soft reset to get back to WM after this command). no battery removal needed!
ecshift.exe -reset soft reset
ecshift.exe -gm status info, mode 0: normal mode, mode 1: bootloader
USAGE:
to enter bootloader mode you need to:
1) run cmd.exe on vista on the shift while the snapvue side is not powered down (doesn't matter if it can't boot to WM).
2) run this command: ECShift.exe -bl
PLEASE give administrator rights to the program if needed!
3) wait until it says it successfully entered bootloader (if you get an error message please let me know)
4) disable WMDC on your shift!!! means under wmdc you must tell it to not allow usb connections!
5) download a special version of mtty for vista from http://hpcmonex.net/mtty_0513_Test.exe and run it
6) select USB in it and you should be in bootloader OK
so if you want to hard reset then do step 7:
7) issue this command: task 28
that's it, you can reboot after exiting bootloader (command: ecshift.exe -mode0, then -reset, or you can also remove battery), this should hard reset your device.
two things:
if mtty can't see usb then remove battery, reboot the snapvue and try the app again.
and bootloader is not tricolour screen, it is black.
and AGAIN, please do not ever try issuing task 2a! never! it will brick the device!
sorry for the many steps. that's so until the app is made more *userfriendly*, that needs more testing and development but will be done and this thread will then be updated with that version.
now, what is left is finish SSPL (important goal is making it userfriendly) to fully unlock the shift to enable you to flash custom roms on the device with
SD, GPS, etc drivers and a lot of apps etcetc.
the work has started on all these, but again, development and testing is slow now without a device.
thanks for your interest, and donations too for donations, see: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=376111
EDIT: instructions and download link have been updated. see also update in other posts in the thread too.

Thanxs Comonex will try out latter and post my results. Once again thanks for this!

Yes!!!!! it work!!!
Very tanks!!!

Great work!
It is great to know progress is being made (even without a test device!).
It is great to know that indeed there is a way to hard reset WM side if needed
Keep up the great work!
And people, if you didn't yet, plz donate to the shift project. Even if it is just a tiny amount. It would help speed things up.
(although I think things are going fast allready )

Thanks and main project thread updated with latest donations. You're right, the team is doing everything possible to move forward.

It works on the CDMA version!
The bootloader screen *is* however tricolor and displays:
CLIO200
SLP-0.14.0000
at the top of the screen.
I didn't even have to reactivate the Sprint module (you don't have to if you use Clear Storage either but you do if you use the HTC ## command to wipe the device).

It works on the CDMA version too!

Strange. THe normal Shift version doesn't have the tricolor in bootloader mode

great job babe keep it up

anyone got old SPL that does show tricolour? i'm still interested in getting that version.

[size=+2]UPDATE....[/size]
I improved on the programs and merged them in one
there will be a GUI very soon, when functionally it gets out of beta status.
so download: http://hpcmonex.net/ECShift.exe
you can type ecshift.exe -help to get command info

ecshift.exe -bl enters bootloader
ecshift.exe -mode0 exits bootloader (do a soft reset to get back to WM after this command). no battery removal needed!
ecshift.exe -reset soft reset
ecshift.exe -gm status info, mode 0: normal mode, mode 1: bootloader
and a [size=+2]REQUEST....[/size]
if anyone tries the bootloader mode, then please try this command in bootloader in mtty:
info 7
and tell me if in the command reply the SPL is older than version 1.00
especially if 0.14! (that one will also have tricolour screen.)

How To: Revert to Windows Mobile 2003

Whats needed:
TyphoonNBFTools: http://w1.whatcounter.com/dlcount.p...yphoonNBFTools_0.3_SPL1010064_SPVServices.zip
Any Official Rom (I used I-Mate SP3 WWE).
A Typhoon running Windows Mobile 5.0.
Reverting Back:
Run TyphoonNBFTools and Open the SPL1010064.nbf. Right click on SPL in the bottom part of the screen and choose Emergency Flash. If this is the first time you have used the program you will get a prompt on your phone to run the runtimes. Choose yes. Click OK to flash the new bootloader to your phone. Next disable Activesync by turning off USB connections. Turn off your phone. While holding down the Camera button insert the USB cable, the phone should run the bootloader and you will be presented with the tri-color screen. It should say USB in the bottom corner. Now run Mtty and choose USB connection. Hit enter in the blank white space. You should now see Cmd>. Type "info 2" without the quotes. You should see some information about your phone. Next type "format BINFS" agains without the quotes. This one is case sensitive. You should see format complete or something along those lines. Now close Mtty and re-enable USB connections. Run the exe from the update you downloaded and follow the instructions. Your phone should now boot back up to WM2003.
For those stuck in bootloader mode you will need to run mtty and reflash the wm5.bin to the phone then follow the steps above.

Man! Can't thank you enough for this. I took my phone to the service centre, willing to pay for the repair, and they could not do it. Every thing works fine now. Very good manual, clear instructions and correct info!

Hi
I Am Trying To Follow The Procedure Mentioned. But When I Right Click On Spl I Am Not Getting 'emergency Flash' Active.
Can U Please Assist Me Regarding This
You need TyphoonNBFTools.dll installed on your phone. Try running TyphoonNBFTools and selecting Tools->Immediate Flash Tools->Test Immediate Flash. It should automatically install the required stuff for you. Check you phone when you run the program. You should get a prompt to installed a program from unknown publisher. Make sure to choose yes.
Stuck in bootloader
Just trying to do this following my question here.
I though it was going well but I have a major problem now! I managed to do the emergency flash, but every time I boot I just get the tricolour bootloader screen (IPL 1.00, SPL 1.01.0064) and can't get any further. Any ideas please? I have tried using mtty to load wm5.bin but get the error "MTTYDownloadImageNot allow operation!"
I have also tried re-doing the "format BINFS" and doing the above again but still no joy.
Any ideas would be much appreciated!
maybe u need to make a "goldcard"
my feeler (o2 xphoneII) lives again after flash with goldcard.
I can't find a way to create one for Typhoon, can you point me in the right direction?
I try flash Amadeus = Qtek 8100 with UpdateTool from Qtek 8310.
Update process stopped at 74% , and UpdateProgramm closed.
Now my Qtek 8100 not Powered ON , and can't enter in boot mode (tricolor screen) with "Camera" button hold + USB cable conneting.
PC don't see any USB devices when I connected my Qtek 8100 to USB port.
I think I erased Boot loader in my Qtek 8100 (but not sure).
Is any method for repair ?

HTC Polaris/Cruise (XDA Orbit 2) bricked.

Hi everyone,
I recently received an XDA Orbit 2, literally, charged it for 2 hours, and when it was full charged, I started using it, I had it for about 2 months now, and recently I changed my home Internet connection to wireless (It's a B & G connection) so my laptop connects fine, and when I tried to connect my XDA Orbit 2, it connected and then soft-reset itself, and now it just loads the O2 screen, then Windows Mobile screen with the volume controller and I can't do anything else so here's what I have tried so far:
- Soft reset
- Removed battery and SIM
- Since I can't access phone's menu at all, I tried to Hard Reset method by holding the 2 soft key, reset, and the power button - So I get the warning that everything will be lost and to press 'Send' to continue, so I press the green key, and soft resets and goes back to the same situation again.
- The latest thing I tried is to load the Hard-SPL into the SDCard which has been formatted to FAT32, so loaded the POLAIMG.nbh into the root. and loaded the phone into BootLoader mode (Camera and reset buttons). It loads the memory card and just says 'Loading ... ' I left it for about an hour, until the battery died completely (I'm sure it's not supposed to take that long). And still the same problem.
I'm not sure if this phone is now bricked, can anyone help me plesae. I really need this to start working again, I don't have any info. on it. (Everything was sync. previously).
Kind regards,
Since you havent really messed with SPL, i would say to take it back, since its still into warranty.
Thanks for the reply, I'm not actually in the UK and will be overseas for a while. I don't really mind experimenting so I would appreciate any advise on this matter. Thanks again.

If yes you culd try searching out a thread on MTTY and recovery from boot loader but I dont know how well that would work on polaris as I have not tried it yet.

I did try to put back a french ROM. I don't know if it was the original because unfortunately when I first flashed it I was kind of beginner in flashing HTC's, but I tried with the only original french ROM that I found on this forum. The process goes through, but yet the result is the same. Is there any kind of command to fully erase (format) the memory (beside the bootloader) and then try to load a ROM ?
Same for me with restoring SPL ...it doesn't work.
And my device is almost at the same state of damage as yours. See my thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=402765
Also the mtty and task8 just restarts my device. Nothing more, nothing less!
So there is no way of restoring SPL with entering the bootloader manually? Not even a mSD-Card Trick out there? I need to get it done because of warranty ;/
You stucked in Olipro hard-spl, this is why restore spl not works...
And unfortunatelly you can not flash spl with micros-sd.
But you can try to flash rom with micro-sd card.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=384084&highlight=guide
Or ask Olipro, maybe he can help you.
Well I am able to flash my Rom the usual way with USB connection.
But no way of restoring the SPL ;(
"So there is no way of restoring SPL with entering the bootloader manually? Not even a mSD-Card Trick out there? I need to get it done because of warranty ;/"
I do not understand exactly...
Did you try restore original spl with manual bootloader?
you run SSPL from Windows Mobile, then flash a stock SPL NBH, job done.
the whole *point* of Hard-SPL is that it can't be overwritten when it performs a flash so that if anything screws up you don't end up locked out of reflashing in the event something screws up.

So...
You have hard-spl on your machine
You can not restore spl followed the guide in post 2 (WITHOUT manual bootloader)
You can not access your windows mobile (WM does not boot)
You freeze on startup screen
You can not start you phone with steps in post 6
Am I right?
If yes, you stucked in bootloader. And unfortunatelly I can not help you...Maybe Olipro.

Well seems like something like this.
See I have no error because of invalid flashing. I had slight water damage. But some days later my device was working again for a whole day.
Next day it didn't work anymore.
When i startup my device and the WM-Splash shows up it makes "bring" and device turns off.
When i plug in the AC charger i can't even get beyond the O2-Splash.
But I can enter the bootloader and flash what I want, it works ;/
I am also able to connect with MTTY, maybe there is a way with repairing it through MTTY?
Full description of my problems here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=402765
But if i cant get rid of the problems i have to send it to warranty by tomorrow or monday and i think they will notice that i don't have the original SPL on it. So they will screw me ;(((
So, as I am not a noob to computers I would try ANYTHING to get it back on my own!
Is there also no way of restoring it by using the microSD-Card? So is there no way without Windows Mobile? Not even the holy MTTY? Or any way of debugging it by MTTY to see whats going wrong?
I'm screwed!
P.s. I have also tried another battery in the o² shop....didn't fix it ;(

But if i cant get rid of the problems i have to send it in by tomorrow or monday and i think they will notice that i don't have the original SPL on it. So they will screw me ;(((
Is there also now way of restoring it by using the microSD-Card? So is there no way without Windows Mobile? Not even the holy MTTY? Then i'm really f***ed.
P.s. I have also tried another battery in the o² shop....didn't fix it ;(

There is an mtty method on post 6...maybe helps start your phone...
You need working windows mobile to restore-spl.

Yes but on "task 8" my device doesn't behave as it should be. It just restarts doing nothing.
Seems like i just have to hope the guys at the service center will not recognize my "not original" SPL. 1% chance ;(
Well thanks for now fktsndr.
Seems like there is really no way of restoring it without Windows Mobile ;(
I thought there would maybe be a "Low Level"-Method of accessing the device and restoring SPL.
Can't think of that there is no way of formatting the device on its lowest level (mtty) or transferring the original SPL per MTTY. Hmm...there should always be a way
Olipro, no way? ;(
if I remember right, the polaris hardSPL is based on an MFG bootloader.
this means you can use mtty commands (mw) to unpatch the write protection then flash the stock SPL.
if I don't remember right, and it is not MFG, then you can still use another mtty command with a special file, but this is more complicated and was not fully tested. you can contact me in PM and we can see.
(you could transfer SPL via mtty, but that is also blocked in hardspl because the mtty transfer uses same code to flash the SPL in this SPL common base)
by the way task 8 is exactly designed to just do a soft reset. nothing wrong with that command.
they really meant task 28. this does a hard reset. you can try that. I guess you already did, but just in case!
edit: I just remembered another way if task 28 doesn't help. ifyou don't mind that the device will stop booting SPL, then you can just do task 2a command in mtty. this will erase SPL, and because of hardSPL overwrite protection it will fail to flash it back from the temporary RAM backup.
the result is that the device will not even boot SPL, it will be black screen. it will boot to the radio bootloader only and O2 won't know what SPL was on it before erase.

[SOLVED] Connection Error [262]. Stuck in bootloader (tri color) mode.

I'm new in these forums as well I'm new with flashing ROMs so obviously I messed up flash process and my device stuck in bootloader (tri-color) mode. This post I address to those unfortunate like me .
# Symptoms #
- ROM flash started and stopped at 17%. After recovery flash process stucks at 0% and pops Connection Error 262. Device is stuck in bootloader mode not possible to flash anything, hard reset does not help, flash from SD card does not help either.
# Possible cause for that #
1. In bootloader mode device shows:
Code:
Pola100
SPL-1.25.0000
CPLD-2
means that Hard SPL was not flashed before flashing ROM file (if Hard SPL was flashed then in second line will be written SPL-2.20.Olinex.).
2. Connection between ActiveSync and device was not established when flashing ROM file.
Before to go any further please take your time and read Polaris Wiki to get familiar with glossary and acronyms used here.
PROCEED ONLY if flashing original ROM does not help, hard reset does not help and flash from SD card does not work.
# Solution #
1. Download MTTY software.
2. Kill ActiveSync (Press Ctrl-Alt-Del and stop rapimgr.exe and wcescomm.exe processes).
3. Plug Polaris into usb port (Plug directly not through hubs).
4. Start MTTY after chose USB from PORT dropdown list (if it is not listed there then ActiveSync processes were not stopped).
5. in window type: set 16 0 (enter cmd mode)
6. after type: task 8 (this will format phone)
7. after type: task 0 (this will restart phone. Not always necessary)
8. soft reset
This procedure can damage your phone. Use it as last resort.
Official source in french here.
Now before flashing any ROMs read carefully how to flash (not install!) Hard SPL.
# P.S. about install and flash termins #
This error with flashing happened to my due misunderstanding between notions of installing something on your device and flashing. In my opinion those are completely two different things. As for first I understand of running some cab or exe directly on device. So problem comes when people sees install Hard SPL en device as they try to find some cabs or exes to install directly on device or they just copy all files to device. To make things clear Hard SPL "installation" actually is ROM flash process which must be done with maximum caution, but those who did not read Wiki won't understand it.

BiG THX @ Whitealien.
works to 100% on my Touch Cruise.
I flashed under Vista Ultimate...
# Solution # ... addition from me for Vista users!
....
2. Start Windows Mobile Device Center and Deaktivate USB Connection and then start Task manager end kill
Process wmdc.exe.
Rest of whitealien. and have fun!
Thank you!!!!
I had given up on this, and was sure my only option was a warranty repair :O
always welcome
Thanks, you've saved my Polaris.
Mine didn't want to react anymore to the soft reset, so I replaced your instruction 8 with:
Cmd>boot
and that did the trick.

I had exactly the same problem, for whatever reason went back to original SPL before HARD SPL.
I solved my issue by using back the original original HTC RUU_signed.nbh and flash it using the CustomRUU.
Thereafter, repeat the entire HARD SPL and flash the home cooked ROM.
Cheers.
For unbricking your HTC Polaris, you can try also a hard-reset (if it is related to a software error):

Seems people are still falling for this error.
I'm has this error.
Solution (with SPL-2.20):

Need help! Rom update crashed hd2

I tried flashing the following to my HD2. Other ROMs have worked fine.
Duttys_Leo_Sense_2.5_5.2.23540.5.5.0_2.10_HG_V1_Radio_2.08.50.08_2_WWE
This time, when resetting it's hanging on the O2 screen. This means I can't get into the phone to try reflashing. How do I fix this please?!!!

You should take a look at the mtty thread if you want to recover from a bad flash...
Grtz,

Crap. I know nothing about this. noob!
This is going to be long and difficult isn't it?

If you post your problem in that thread, the experts over there will give you all the detailed steps and it won't be so bad after all
And I think that anything would be better than to buy a new HD2?
Grtz,
Degake
No, but you shoulda read the n00b flashing guide before flashing...do you have HSPL on your phone? Do you have it SIM-unlocked? Did you flash using activesync or sd card?

I did. I have most rcent HSPL, flashing using activesync and have done 4 "successfull" ROM upgrades.
This one appeared to be fine but when it did auto-reset it's now hanging and not booting into anything useful.
Thanks degake.
If a hard reset doesn't help then MTTY might be the only way out
Problem FIXED
Solution: Followed these steps
"This will remove the need for users, x64 in particular, to use “Unsigned Drivers.” Also since in Vista SP2 (x64 & x86) they removed the “F8” options Completely!
Files Needed:
Driver Signature Enforcement Overrider
Remove Watermark V0.8
1: Run the Driver Signature Enforcement Overrider and select “ENABLE TEST MODE” and Press Next
2: There will be a warning to REBOOT, Press “OK”
3: Go Back to Driver Signature Enforcement Overrider Select “Exit” then Click “Next”
4: REBOOT
5: Run the “Remove Watermark V0.8” for you OS type (x64 or x84)
6: In the Command Window type “Y” and wait for the process to complete
7: Once complete REBOOT your system and begin the driver install"
listed in post 2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=623356
Then
*Bring device into bootloader (Reset + Hold Vol Down), This will show the Red, Blue, Green screen showing "Serial"
From here I was able to re-run the customRRU file to flash the ROM again. (this may have been jumping the gun a little!)
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction guys.
that'll be MTTY!! Only had to use it once myself but it's a god send

Hi folks,
Had the same problem today with a bad flash, phone wouldnt boot up past o2 welcome screen etc etc.
I fixed it by just going into bootloader (hold volume down button on the side of the device while holding the power button down for 3 seconds) and installing the o2 stock (1.43) rom from my pc.
Edit: Cant seem to post the link as im a new user but "Football" posted it on this forum on 23rd of December if you need to search for it.
Sorry if this seems like a double post of the OPs solution but some people could be confused by the MTTY thread (I was) when in reality theres no need to even look at it.
Hope this helps someone.
Greg
Thanks for posting that comment. I did wonder if MTTY had anything to do with the solution (I dont even understand properly what MTTY is!) so I posted everything I did.
I had a feeling that I could have avoided those steps and just gone straight to the bootloader and you've proved me right. it's a quick and easy solution to a slightly scary problem!
