Australian Atom in UK. T-mobile / virgin NO GO - iPAQ rw6828, XDA Atom General

Just spend a week working on my problem, one which i now know other people have had and not solved. So here is everything in one place for general info (and for someone smarter then me to solve).
Product: Atom - Only the ones purchased in Australia (Why are they different??)
Problem: The Atom will work fine on networks all over the world and in the UK, BUT NOT the t-mobile / virgin UK network.
Details: A virgin / t-mobile sim, when placed in the Australian atom will not stay connected and operating correctly when the phone is one, and once you put it to sleep it will loose its GSM network connection altogether (it seems to turn the GSM radio off instead of standby). Once you turn it on again, it will spend 30 seconds finding the network and be stable for 2-5 mins before the GSM radio starts loosing and gaining connection again.
The same SIM will work fine in all other phones i (and others in the forum) have tried. Also the phone works fine with SIMS from Orange / Voda / O2.
Others stories:
All of these seem to be the exact same problem-

What i have tried:
Updating Roms doesnt fix problem, from latest build wm5, to wm6 and wm6.1 (from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=329037).
Also tried re-flashing the original o2 rom from the webpage.
via the wm6 and wm6.1 ROMs i have tried setting the radio to only 800, 900,1800, and 1900 MHz but no change.
Geographic location does not effect anything.
Solution:
switch back to a non T-mobile network.
Other possible solutions / questions:
Why is the Australian Atom different?
Can i flash a radio ROM to correct this, or is it something "on chip"?
Is this problem on the operators side - are they stopping me?
FYI - my (current) config:
Hardware: C1
Radio: r060822N_MN1arc_rs00052
ROM: medkids atom 6.1 final
Processor ARMV4I PXA27x
Anyone able to help, before i go sign up to O2 again
Thanks,

Is there way to have signal in EU with T-Mobile Radio ?

Hi everybody,
i just do some updates to my XDA ...
first i do the 4.00.16 ENG T-Mobile US rom... end all ok.
after i do the T-Mobile RU 6.24.00 and i never take the GSM service (i live in Italy)
after i do the AT&t A 20.10 and i never take the GSM service also
last i return at O2 4.21 that i hate because every time that i lost the GSM service, he never come back until reset...
Is there some way to take a european GSM service with some T-Mobile os AT&T radio stack please ?
Thanks all
Denis
did you switch to the 800 band? if its set to 1900 (for the us) you won't get a signal. you should get coverage on the 800 frequency.
This is a well known problem among many users. I have been "fighting" against this since some weeks. I almost tried everything. Even when I tried a T-mobile radio stack together with a T-Mobile SIM-Card (Austria) it did not work properly. After some hours it loses the signal and a soft reset is required. I never had any errors during installation of ROMs or radio stacks.
I am wondering if it would make sense to bring it in for service.
My last hope is an update of the radio stack (maybe together with the WM2003 update).
At the end of the day I can say that the XDA is not the thing I need. Maybe the XDA2 is better.
Exactly for this reason i want to change my XDA with XDA II... but in Italy is only some XDA II buyed from Germany... well have german language os.
Anyware... if somebody now how to make funntional the T-Mobile radio stack in europe ... please let me know.
Thanks all
Denis
It appears that the best thing going right now for you European users is the latest Qtek 1010 Radio Stack Upgrade.
It can be found at:
http://www.carrierdevices.com.au/downloads/asiapacific.htm
Download Radio Upgrade File : RSUv1.15_(GPRS_T32500_ENG).exe
BTW read the WARNING
Also from the looks of the site this RS might be pretty close to the one thats being used in the XDAII....?
HTH
How do you know that this is the best RSU for Europe ?
Any personal experience ?
Romania (yes ... it's Europe)
Here I'm using a T-Mobile US phone with 6.24.00 with no problems, including GPRS.
I've also a custom built 4.00.21 (and I can't wait for the 4.01.00  )
So it should work without problems on the 900 band. The 1900 is no use and also you cannot get to the 1800 since hardware defaults.

Problem connecting to O2 after unlocking XDA

Hello all
My colleague posted this message a couple of weeks ago, but didn't provide full info and as such the replies did not work.
So here it is. I would be grateful for any advice.
I unlocked my xda I, using a software I downloded from here, which was previously working on O2 UK. After that, it doesn't work with any O2 Sim. It works with all other UK sims (Vodafone, T-Mobile, Orange). But not O2. The O2 sims are ok as they work on other handsets and specifically my unlocked XDA II and other handsets ( I have tried 2 different O2 sims).
But no joy. I even tried to change the GSM frequency on the XDA through boot loader (even though I didn't have to), but no joy. I have gone through the auto config several times. but no joy. I even re-installed the latest O2 firmware and radio update (from the O2 web site), but still no joy.
I am running out of ideas. Does anyone have any idea? Should I try and downgrade the firmware and radio stack and try again? Can I do it from the original CD?
I would be grateful for any ideas.
Cheers
Nima
Can you tell us the nature of the error with an O2 sim, what is shown at the signal level meter, what happens when you attempt a call etc. Please leave the radio stack alone, your phone is working on 900 and 1800 bands so that is not the problem. Was the sim that you have at the moment working on this phone on O2 before the upgrade.?
Hello Thank you for your reply.
When you turn the phone on, it asks you for the SIM pin and the device works fine in every other way. But you get no signal. If you try to make a phone call, you get the phone dialer screen and you can dial the number but, obviously, it disconnects more or less immediately. If (from the phone dialer screen) you try and go to options it freezes and doesn't show you the options screen and then you can only exit the phone dialer. Also, I put the GSM frequenct back to what it was. I haven't changed anything in the bootloader mode anyway. I had problems with the original O2 sim after the upgrade (funny enough, it worked for a day or two), but now i don't have that sim as the contract finished. By the way, both of the O2 sims I am trying now are contracts and NOT pre-paid.
Well here it is. I hope this helps to let you figure something out. I would be grateful for any ideas. What about formware downgrade? what do you think? could it help ? is it even possible?
Thanks a lot.
Nima
It presents as a blocked phone, if you look closely at the signal meter after a soft reset you may see the signal come up but then drop back to nothing. It may be coincidence that it stopped working with O2 2 days after the upgrade. I have seen this happen with phones that either have been subject to insurance claim or where a contract was not fully paid up for the 12 months, however it usually means it will be blocked on all networks. It does not look like a rom downgrade will work, also as said before, if it works on Vodafone it should logically work with all other 900 mhz bands.

New O2 Exec Owner - Questions and Issues

Hi guys,
As the new owner of O2 Exec, that I purchase in second hand shop, I come up with some questions and issues. Of course, I tried to find my answer on the forum but couldn't find it so I was thinking maybe some experienced users might have the answer.
Also some information about the configuration of my O2 Exec:
O2 Exec
Rom Version: 1.30.107 WWE
Rom Date: 04/11/06
Radio Version: 1.09.00
Protocol Version: 42.42.P8
ExtROM Version: 1.30.162 WWE
I have unlock the exec and I am using it with a T-Mobile sim card in the UK. I am also register with Web'n'walk (Unlimited GPRS data plan).
I am synchronizing the Exec with Exchange server and I am using the email push.
See below:
- When I plugged the exec by Usb for active sync, I got an error on my laptop saying that I can't synchronize. If I unplug the cable and plug it again, it tend to works (Sometimes it doesn't work and I have to kill active sync on my laptop and start it again). Any ideas?
- Is there a way to completely block the data transmission when I am abroad. In fact, before I was using a Blackberry and there was an interesting option which allow to block all data connection when you are Roaming. Good to avoid bad surprise with the expensive data roaming fee.
- When I am using TCMP to listen to music. It starts to play fine, and then suddenly i got an error saying that the file can't be found on the SD card. I didn't remove the card and I can see that the card is still there in the file explorer.
- Does the email Push can work with Wifi or only with GPRS? If yes, how can I configure this?
- How can I check on the today screen that my bluetooth is paired correctly. I use to have a Blueangel with WM2003 and I remember that there was an icon in the top bar with a headset to indicate that the bluetooth headset was paired. The only workaround so far is to press my bt headset and see if the voice dialing window come up. I think there might be a better way.
- Is there a point for me to upgrade my Radio version? I tried to do it but get an error that the country code wasn't correct or something like this. If it brings improvement can you please give me some information on how to do upgrade it on a O2 exec since it is an Orange upgrade?
- I am using Web'n'walk in the uk with only GPRS. I configure the gprs parameter with the information from the internet. The information given by the customer services where not working. Is there any way to use the UMTS (i.e. 3G) instead of GPRS. The customer services told me that I have to upgrade my plan to do so. Anybody have another solution?
To conclude, this handset is a really impressive machine. As I say before, I used to have a Blueangel and I can see that a lots of things have improved since then.
Sorry for my big list of questions and thank you very much for your help.
Julien.
Web'nWalk with UMTS
I have a Web'nWalk tariff on t-Mobile.
If your sim is a recent one (mine is a year old), it can handle both GPRS and UMTS depending on availability. Older sims cannot - you have to request a new one. This was confirmed by T-Mobile support as well as my experience with the sim. It drops to GPRS where there's no 3G coverage, and I get good speed with 3G (UMTS) in most parts of London
You need to set Network Type to Auto (Phone -> Menu -> Options -> Band) if the current default is GSM.
Hope this helps.

My O2 -Hermes drives me crazy. Help !

Since a few weeks I have following issue with my O2 Trion:
Even though the antenna signal shows 100% strenght, I have 1 chance on 2 being unable either to make a call or to receive (same counts for SMS send/receive) When people call me, the call is forwarded directly to my voice mail like my telephone is shut of. When calling someone, I got 3X dong-dong sound without getting through
I have changed the SIM card , uninstalled a lot of applications but problem remains.
What other tests can I do to see if it is a soft or hardware problem?
The sof onboard is the original delivered on + pocketmechanic pro WM5 and Pocketmusic.
My O2 was originally German with QwertZ layout, got the 1.23.707.1 ROM, the radio version 1.06.00.10 and protocol 32.37.7010.01H.
Before I hand over my so precious tool, I wanted to know of some experts here have any suggestions?
Thanks upfront!
I've had several phones in the past that show maximum signal when actually they have virtually no signal at all!!
I wonder whether it's worth trying to limit the connection (as a test) to GSM band only, just in case you've got the band switching issue.
Start>settings>personal tab>phone>band and only selecting GSM in the drop down boxes.

Thanks, but I tried all options in those settings already. Auto + Auto, GSM +Auto, GSM + UMTS etc.. nothing seems to be stable. There is no rational behind to clarify this issue...
What i do notice is that when my network goes from GSM to UMTS depending of the strongest network, UMTS shows less issues( I believe)
I had similar radio problems with my German TyTN (E-Plus), that are resolved now that the device was replaced.
The E-Plus hotline confirmed there are some devices with unrepairable radio problems.
So before you or your callers go crazy with calls dropped by your TyTN or not being able to find a network or you're tired of the quick battery drain, the mediocre CPU performance or obscure crashes, get it replaced.
Would it help if I boot to another radio version only, or is it hardware related?
Issue is that O2 Trion is not supported / distributed in Taiwan (as all WM5are Chinese here)
Does someone knows if DOPOD would do the repair for a O2 XDA trion german version in another country than they distribute their devices?
Any hotline to ask?
Thanks
No, they probably won't. Upgrade the ROM, and flash the new radio. Read the wiki's and ASK FOR HELP before you do anything you are unsure of.
Follow these instructions to the letter and you'll be okay. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=285586
Let me know if you have problems with the bootloader version
Good luck

Time for a few more questions....!!
Hi,
Does your phone display the "U" (or 3G) symbol to denote that 3G coverage is available?? I looked at your website to get your location and plugged it into http://enableoci.orange.co.uk/uk/UKCoverageSearch.htm (I used the town rather than the postcode to get an overall coverage map) - it looks a bit patchy to me (for your work postcode, the local area looks pretty good); I guess it depends on whether you're using the phone at work or when you're out and about?
Do you know what radio version is on your phone; has it been updated with one of the radios and/or ROM's from this site or does it have the standard issue Orange radio? You can find out by going to Start | Settings | System tab | Device information. If the radio version is >= 1.38.x.x then you should be fine (although some people on Orange have reported that radio 1.41.x.x is not as good as 1.40.x.x - opinions vary ).
Do you or any colleagues have another Orange 3G phone that works where yours doesn't?? We need to establish whether the problem is just with your phone or whether it is in fact related to the 3G coverage generally.
Let me know how you get on
Mark.
Hi Mark,
My mission is to get this phone working on Vodafone 3g. I was testing Orange to see if it was a network problem.
I am now at my office and when in phone mode it now displays
UMTS Orange and the 3g signal, calls and browsing are now allowed!!
Here is the device info:
Rom Version 2.11.255.1
ROm Date 03/07/07
Radio 1.38.00.10
Protocol Version 32.71.7020.12H
ExtRom 2.11.255.104
I am just waiting to get a Vodafone 3g Sim Card to test, to see if it was only a matter of location.
Many Thanks
[email protected] for MSN or Email.
Have you tried the radio engineering test application?
I had a similar problem using my Vodafone with an O2 SIM card. I'd installed the O2 settings cab but still the data stuff wouldn't work.
The problem turned out to be that the data connection was still trying to use the Vodafone settings. To resolve this I installed Daniel Herrero's Bandswitch. This allows me to disable connection settings and only leave the settings active for the current SIM.
