HTC Shift and Vista SP1 - Shift General

At first sight it looks like SP1 is not going down well on the Shift. The ShagCtrl (Shift Control Center) application (who for god's sake invented that shortname ShagCtrl??) exits with an eventID 1000 error and there seem to be some overall stability issues ....

Because of the intregration between vista and snavue I am afraid we will have to wait for htc updates. This weekday I ran windows update and the graphic card driver was updated. As result I only could work on 800x600. Higher res was disabled so I ve to undo the update....

Wow- I thought SP1 would be the least of problems... I thought about getting one but guess I'll hold off a bit until some of these problems have been sorted out. SP1 is something I wouldn't want to be witout... doesn't have major new 'things' in it, but the summary of all the little fixes is really nice.
What is your general perception of the device so far? Is the battery life too constricting? I was looking for a machine that would allow me to do some 'heavy' email (filing / writing) while on the road in Outlook / Vista and do a quick check / sorting of emails when I just have 5 minutes or so where booting up a machine wouldn't make the most sense... does it seem to do this (provided we get a better email client on CE (Flexview for example) installed on the machine?
What are our chances of getting more storage to the WM6 part? the 256MB RAM on board don't quite do it for me... and apparently the SD card or HD cannot be accessed...?
Thanks!

SP1 is fine on my shift!
P

Does the Shift Control Center start properly at boot and is it active in the tray?

Yup, everything works perfectly.
First thing I did was put RTM SP1 on, Office 2k7 SP1 and a few other bits n bobs, and it's all good.
P

odd ... I will give i a new try then ...

Strange. The second install of SP1 ended up not giving any headaches at all ... all applications work smoothly ... (even though it was exactly the same SP1 installer)

Hi. Do you see any improvement on SP1? Should I update?

SP1 may not show earth-shattering improvements, but it does improve significantly on file transfers, both to disk and through LAN/WAN so I would say yes.

what is your overall thougts about the Shift ? have you found anything annoying on it ?
what about the origami 2.0 experience? on videos, it seems that it was slow to launch... what about using it all day ? headaches, eyes closing, eyes pain?
thanks for sharing your experience

I absolutely love it but I am saying this from a professional perspective ... In real life I actually sell innovation in the end-user workspace, so it is my job to sell flexibility and mobility .... from that perspective the Shift is a perfect match. I have decided (as a testcase) to stick to the Shift for the next 2 weeks and leave my laptop locked away. (Just to see how well the Shift performs in real life). Over the next few weeks I will only be carrying the Shift, the dongle and power supply, as well as my ThinkOutside BT keyboard and mouse. To top that off I will only be carrying a biometric access stick into our company's Virtual Desktop environment.
(Mind you, I do have a few points of criticism though ... One of them for instance is the fact that the Shift has a UK keyboard instead of an (international) US one. Also the fact that one cannot set the SnapVue part to display in the 24h format)
Aside from that, people should not forget that they can't expect the Shift to deliver Core Duo performance. That simply is not it's purpose. The Stealy A110 Performance however is more than acceptable for the function I described above.

After installing of SP1 stopped working Shift Control Center and Audio driver on my Shift too. Solution of this problem is installing Control Center again. Run setup.exe located in directory C:\Program Files\HTC\control\ . After restart everything works well.
.... but, after running well for a few hour, problem is back...... sorry for wrong suggestion

One of the benefits of SP1 is actually related to Readyboost... if you enable it (in another thread under this topic) without SP1, the encryption key is 'lost' when going into sleep / hybernation. This means that after a wakeup the data will have to be reloaded. This is fixed in SP1 so you should see a better performance after resuming from sleep / hybernation.
As already mentioned, the copy performance is also drastically improved. The battery time should see a boost of maybe 2 - 5% (very subjectively depending on your workload) as the CPU is now allowed more often than not to enter sleep-mode (there will be off course no difference whatsoever when using mediaplayer or other parts that keep the CPU busy).

Hi guys, may I ask you where you get your SP1? is it through the automatic windows update? or is it just a release you download from the internet?

It's available to download direct from Microsoft for MSDN members.
Copies can be found in the usual places.

No working sound and more....

It has been a long time ago that I bought a new toy with so many problems as this little b**&^^rd.
Now, already three times, I did not have any sound at all.
I do not remeber what complains there were (No driver installed? No sound card?) And I do not feel the energy to find out.
After a restart (which is always quickly done in maximum 4 minutes and I am becoming quite good in finding other things to do when waiting for this and that) the sound is back.
Till now my disappointment only consists of:
1. This sound problem
2. Resume problems in low power settings
3 SD card not being recognized, randomly
4. Shift control centre sometimes crashing, or not working at all.
5. Origami crashing, or not working, or only partionally.
6. Bad performance of my VLC player
7. And whatever anybody can find on this forum.
Anyway.. I am trying to transfer info from my MacBook into my new Macbook Air and that also hangs all the time, resetting the connection etc etc.
So it's not only Vista that makes me alcoholic

Sounds familiar (forgive the pun). Not had your problems but I'm reaching the end of a bottle of wine that I opened 45 minutes ago whileunistalling SP1 which caused me endless troubles. Did you install SP1?
trend micro the culprit
If you did the vista sp1 upgrade you must uninstall trend micro antivirus from your system. It is not compatible with sp1 and breaks all of the items you mentioned.
I had the same problem - uninstalled and rebooted, all fixed.

I did not install Trend, neither do I have any other antivirus program.
But thx anyway for the hint.

display quirk?
Display quirk?
I recognized that the brightness of the start screen of Snapvue is irregular. Shouldn't it be pitch black? But across the screen I have got sort of a big grayish egg. Or: a big oval part is much lighter than the rest of the start screen in Snapvue. If I go into a menu which is basically white then the irregularity disappears.
Is this a common thing? Or is it just a quirk of my Shift?
Can I change the start screen having liberated the Shift (first steps), not changing to Realvga, I don't know if I have the courage to do that.
Thanks!

1: I am not using WM. But as far as I can see Snapvue working OK. No SIM card however. The sound not working occurs absolutely randomly, but I suspect a little bit the interaction between Origami and WMP. Could be the powerplan, but still....
2. I know, that's solved ( more or less but no more use of low power possible = shorter battery life).
3. I do not know what you mean, and what the realtion is between Vista and WM, I thought the SD card is not recognized by WM at all. I am talking about the SD card randomly dissappering when in Vista. Sometimes after suspend. etc. See that thread.
4. I cannot force this problem with Shift control centre. So no idea when.
5. Different powerplans. I combine them. I will do new research wit Origami only using the fastes power plan. ( If I have time)
6. I tried everything with VLC. It is not a huge problem and also randomly. But in full screen it plays irregularely. I know VLC is not the fastest of all, but still.
I suspect it is Vista doing all kind of things ( Indexing I shut of from the first day) randomly, preventing VLC to play correctly.
When I let it rest for a long time VLC performs better.
VLC working flawlessly or not, is not related to any powerplan or battery use. Tested all combinations. So, when it is working nice, I pull the power supply; put it on low power, and it keeps working nice.
It is all quite disappointing, and I am not an easy complainer.

Had the same problems with the VLC. I updated the video driver and it helped a significant amount. From unwatchable in full screen mode to at the least bearable.

But my VLC is doing reasonably well, only in full screen it sometimes gets hickups.

hey The sound bug is easily fixed, just open the device manager on the vista side of course, go to sound and on the plugin window it will say that it works but it didnt in my case, all I did was disable it wait a couple of minutes and then enable it again... hope it works for you

POLL: Does Vista SP1 work on your Shift?

Ok,
So a while ago I installed SP1 on my Shift, but I was having some issues with it and at the time I didn't have the time to attempt to resolve them so I rolled it back out again.
So, now that I've more time again, I'm thinking about giving it another go but beforehand I'd like to see what the user communities experience is.
If you had problems with SP1, but eventually overcame them, please post what you did here, so that we can collate together everything for an SP1 advice thread!
Regards,
Dave
I voted 'Other'.
I haven't tried installing it yet, after seeing many reported problems. My Shift works well now, so I'll wait for developments.
Sticky?
Hi,
maybe you should do this as a sticky, as it slowly rolls out of sight, although I think it is quite interesting to know the experiences of others.
S.
I installed SP1, reinstalled the network and the control centre. I had just one issue - the SIM data connection kept bombing out in Vista. I couldn't find a solution for this, and found it unbearable, so I reverted back to SP1.
I'm keen on installing SP1 for the second time just to see if the second installation manages not to have the problem...
i've installed sp1 rc2 (i think) because in italian sp1 is out from 2 days.
and everything work very good.
shift goes more stable no kind of issue. didn't reinstall control center or other driver.
when 2 days ago official sp1 was released. i've uninstalled rc2. used shift withouth kind of sp, and work very slowly, in boot, on internet on files transmission.
installed official sp1, and everithing goes very well!!

Same here didn't try the RC versions but did go with the released version from windows update, so far no problems and its been used daily for a few weeks
I've now installed SP1, it may have made the Shift a little snappier, but it has broken 'suspend'. I rarely use suspend anyway, so I can live with it for now.
I installed SP1, which finished without a problem. Once the machine rebooted, though, the boot process would not go beyond the spinning circle on the startup screen.
Solution: Fn + F3...
Let's see what happens when I install SP1 right away.

mah, idon't know why. depends on various installation..
My first installation of SP1 had connectivity and perfomance problems.
So I rolled back to the pre SP1 restore point and everthing worked perfectlly again.
Then I plucked up the courage to install SP1 again, and this time around it hardly has any connectivity problems (especially in high performance power mode), and runs faster too (due to SP1 not due to the high performance mode).
So I am happy this time to keep SP1 installed.
I have one problem remaining however. Since installing SP1, sleep and suspend crash vista on restart. This is a pain. I see on this site that others are suffering from 'suspend' problems, and there is known solution at present.
My question is, are any SP1'ers able to restart after sleeping and hibernating?
If that is the case, then I might reinstall SP1 a third time to see if I can get a sleep-capable SP1 installation.
I haven't yet installed SP1 but I've suspended problem since the first day
So at the moment I use hibernate to turn off my Shift and it works with no problems.
I'm still waiting for the Chinese Version SP1 to be released............
Hope it can be downloaded in May
Today I try to click the Windows Update and there is a Vista SP1 for my Chinese Version to update. I just click & download it and install it.
Everything works fine except the Control Centre crashed.
Finally, I try to go to C:\Program Files\HTC\Control\Setup.exe
After the installation, the Control Centre can work now.
After update to SP1, I use crystalmark to test the performance. The result is a bit better than before.........
My experience installing SP1
Hi,
I initially had huge amounts of problems, and kept getting Vista backing out SP1. I tried everything under the sub, disk check, sfc, memory check, etc, etc from the MS suggestions (no wonder!).
I finally got it working! The trick is to apply the SP1 immediately after you first boot the device (and after all the HTC gear is loaded on it).
This is what I did (of course after it failed a few times, cos I installed some software before SP1).
Note: While there is no risk in doing this, as it is HTC build, I don't offer any warranty, this is just my own experiences.
2. Download the Windows Vista SP1 Stand-alone package from the MS web site (~450MB). I prefer this one because if you stuff it up, you dont have to wait for Windows Update to download again. Can be found at:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...6D-5EBB-413B-89C9-CB3D06D12674&displaylang=en
2. Back-up all of your data, as the next step will kill all data on your HTC and return to what it was like when you bought it out of the box. Disconnect all network connections, and disable the 3G (comm manager in WinMo6, Flight mode).
3. Turn on the device and immediately press Fn-F3. You will be prompted to re-install everything. That is, there is a hidden partition on the HDD which contains a "ghost" of the original Vista and software that was loaded on it.
4. Once you have gone through the re-insall (takes about 45-60mins), you will then follow the HTC and other software installs. Do all of the installs until it is completed. Dont connect network and certainly dont do Windows Update
5. Run the EXE SP1 package you downloaded in Step 1. It takes a very long time, about 60-90 mins in total, so be patient. Even if you think its hung, be patient, it usually keeps going. I would wait about 2-3 hours before concluding that it has hung.
6. Once this is done, load Vista, goto Windows Update and do the rest of the updates. You may need to run Windows update a couple of times to fully update the system.
Hope this provides some help and reduce the MS pain!
PS: I kill Windows Vista enhancements to boost performance, Right Click My Computer, Click on Advanced System Settings, Advanced > Performance > Settings, Select Custom and uncheck all of the items in the list. Funny enough, Vista will look like and feel like XP.
My device now uses about 500MB RAM at boot-up, and still runs reasonably fast even with anti-virus crap on it.
Have fun, I know I did (not).
After testing with SP1 for a couple of days, I found that the USB Tool cannot work properly. It disconnects all the time......
Trying your method of upgrading to SP1, will report results after test, thanks

Interesting error message 2300 / thoughts on phone after 1 month

Hello all,
Just thought I'd share a curiosity I never saw come up for the Xperia X2 in all my searches. I bought the phone new from an affiliate vendor off a major e-merchant. The box looked a bit worn but all the original accessories were inside, and all the protective screen film, etc. appeared untouched. Every time I boot the phone, I get an error message:
Customization (2300)
Error during operation. Try again?
Hitting yes, I believe gets the same message, and "no" continues the boot. This carries with it several interesting curiosities. I don't know much about flashing and primary vs secondary OS environment or whatever but it appears the phone is entirely devoid of customization (bastardization?) by SE and is like a demo WM 6.5 clean install with a few differences:
- I still found some SE ringtones, and probably other stuff on the SD that came with the phone
- The thing came with Google Mobile App
- The bottom 2 buttons don't work (the toggly thing or w/e it is and "Ok"). Still working on this - suggestions appreciated.
I guess the drawbacks are that I don't see all the custom SE skins that some may find to be cool, and that the time resets with every reboot, which was a major setback until I got SmartTimeSync, which essentially made it a non-issue.
I'm potentially lucky because:
- the phone may or may not run faster, although full web pages do take a while to load in IE. For some reason, I didn't like Opera Mobile 10 - feel it's too difficult to get out of it / multitask, and didn't find it a lot faster. I can watch even an embedded youtube on a web page, which sometimes even plays without frame shake or w/e, when the phone is happy. Plays well on the google youtube app.
- Skype, in this day in age . Works well, although not through earpiece but speaker or headphone
- I forgot what else people complained SE crippled, but maybe those other things as well
I also wanted to say I really like the phone - it really does the job for me as far as the deal I get for unlimited data on a major North American carrier by using a phone like this if people know what I mean. And I am getting great usage out of it. IMAP email (still working on Exchange - getting certificate errors but this may be a problem with the server end. Kind of sucks though that I get a Microsoft product and can't get the Exchange to work), tethering is a breeze both cable and bluetooth, Google Maps with GPS - haven't tried any dedicated soft yet, got the X2 light thingy working. A lot of this may be old and tried for you guys but I couldn't get on the smartphone craze bandwagon because it's not affordable/worth it for me if I have to pay up in the subsidy phone then shackled to data plan contract game. A year or two ago before iphone 4 came out, I was just amazed at screen quality on the HTCs but was shocked by price tag and could never believe I could get a similar experience so soon. I love the way the letters look in IE on this thing all tiny in Cleartype. I'm an old school Microsoft fan, so this was right up my alley - I've never owned an Apple product, although I'm disappointed with the new Microsoft products like the new Bing map styling, Phone 7, Vista, Windows 7, Word 2007, etc. Anyway, thought I'd share this, and I'd be interested in hearing from the experts on why my phone might be behaving this way, thoughts, advice, etc.
In near future, hoping to downgrade ActiveStink so it can go over wifi and install Terminal Services client. That could be cool on a screen like this...
download sony ericsson update service from here install on your pc and follow the instructions on updating the device from the description of your problem it's a bad flash.

Skype does not work in the latest release. Then you cannot revert to the previous firmware under any circumstances.
This is a fact, it is your choice.
My advice is to let Skype go. First firmware is holding back the hardware and Skype doesn't work quite smoothly. My guess is this is why they ceased support, it was nice to know Skype was there but less then mediocre quality.
Put on the latest firmware and overclock the device to 1056. You'll find several useful tweaks on this forum. It will never rise up to what the hardware was meant to do but you'll find it a bit better than acceptable.
There is a workaround however, you can back up the current instalation with Resco then call it back if you need.

Windows 8 on MacBook Pro

I'd like to start a discussion on how to get Windows 8 running properly on a MacBook Pro (or in general any Mac that supports BootCamp).
Everything runs kind of smoothly, except since Apple doesn't "Officially Support" Windows 8, out of the gate I wasn't able to get a few things working. Unfortunately, the driver disc that Apple provides to you doesn't install officially because I was "not running Windows 7."
I am using a MacBook Pro, early 2010. 2.4ghz Core2Duo, 4gb of RAM and a 1tb HDD. (I can post an iso for these drivers later if needed)
Not working
Volume Buttons
Brightness Buttons
Eject button
2-Finger Scroll
I'll update later once I am out of class, but those are some things I've run into.
can't you get the drivers from the bootcamp program
if you have the exes of the files just run the programs into compatibility mode
alternatively use uniextract to extract the drivers and run the exes that way..
right click the setup file choose properties. Goto compatibility, and choose windows 7. Hit ok and run setup file..
works for me using the compatibility mode to install bootcamp using windows 7 mode
Well thanks guys! As soon as I read that I had a pretty big "DUH" moment. Everything is running much smoother now for obvious reasons.
Anyone had a freeze yet? When I'm doing intensive stuff it hangs and I have to manually shut it down.
I am also still missing a driver: Microsoft Device Association Device Enumerator.
I have an early 2009 MacBook Pro (13 inch), maybe that's why
Hi,
I have the same freezing issue on my 2009 MacBook Pro 13 inch, I have narrowed it down to the Nvidia graphics drivers (feels like Vista all over again with Nvidia giving us crappy unstable drivers again), if you go down to the built in Microsoft driver the laptop is solid albeit a little bit less smooth due to the loss of the Nvidia drivers and your laptops fans will be on quite a bit but it stops it crashing.
I have tried several different Nvidia drivers from laptopvideo2go.com and none have stopped the random crashing but other than that Windows 8 is rocking.
Thanks

"Microsoft Device Association Device Enumerator"

You might wanna try updating the PC. There's a driver being offered by Microsoft I think and I been running it since and haven't had a freeze yet. We have yet to see, but give it a try and let me know what you get.

Nope.. That didn't work either. I even tried 32 bits one with the generic driver.. I guess I'll have to wait for a mature build.

yes indeed... very helpful !
I have the same issue and I have thinking about the nVidia drivers also...
I hope it will have a better stability in Win8 beta... because win8 is absolutely amazing !
I got most of the things working except:
Screen brightness buttons
Volume buttons
Eject button.
W8 treats them like regular function keys, even with the option turned off in the bootcamp meny.
**EDIT**
I got them to work!
I installed bootcamp driver 3.3 for windows 8 and installed .net framework 3.5.1 from windows update, now the buttons work but it's not showing the symbols (for example: lowering the volume) on the screen.
Windows 8 have not (yet...) crashed on me.
thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
all of this works. you probably did something wrong.
Does multitouch on the trackpad work for sliding the screen rapidly side to side?

I haven't tested that feature yet, I am also unsure on how bootcamp drivers handles multitouch (with more than 2 fingers)

Well I have a mid 2009 13 inch MacBook Pro too and had the freezing on DP, have the CP installed now and all was going well........... until it froze again!! Odd thing is it only ever happens for me when chrome is running.
Installed on my 2011 Mac mini, upgraded from Windows 7 and not a single driver issue at all. Running smooth and calm like it should be.
Massive win =D
Funny that it actually runs better on the Mac mini than Lion.. Only tidbit is that HDMI audio is still not working! D:
Perfect on my Air 11'' (2011) too. I've seen only one driver that doesnt seem to work alright : the automatic brightness sensor makes the screen turn black randomly when there isn't much light around. I disabled it and manage everything manually...

[Q] Windows 8 overheating my ultrabook

Strange little problem I’ve got here. I’m using the brilliant Asus UX31E ultrabook which is a 1.8ghz i7.
Didn’t have any problems running windows 7, but just installed a fresh windows 8 last week.
I’ve installed all the updates I could find from the ASUS website but here’s the problem, with windows 7 the fans would only ever come on if you were really pushing it playing a game. Using windows 8 the fans will regularly come on just browsing in chrome.
when you open task manager the computer details recognise that it’s only a 1.8 processer yet it often is being utilized as high as 2.8ghz! This is making the machine overheat, turn on the fans and sometimes have to turn itself off.
I’ve been into power settings and reduced the maximum power usage to 70% and that usually does the job, but then it quickly forgets this setting and restores it to 100% (2.7GHZ!). In task manager the highest task utilisation wise is ‘system’ but no idea exactly what it’s doing..
Is there anything I can do to have greater control over the processor speed or investigate what might be causing the problem?
Asus had some power control software for windows 7 but don’t seem to offer it for windows 8.
Cheers guys

Have you done a upgrade or clean installation from windows 8
if you had done a upgrade please do a clean installation of windows 8
if not then go to the advance power settings in the control panel and set processor cooling state to active

I was wondering if it was a true clean install or upgrade. I read he installed a fresh copy nut wasn't sure if that was meaning clean (wiped the drive) or what. I didn't really notice.alot of heat issues with my last laptop I upgraded; I chose to keep personal files and settings. I do have about 180gb of pictures and movies which were scattered in multiple locations on win7. Now my media is very orderly, as well as my 20gb of music.
Saying all that, I believe when I installed the media center that it cleaned up my files, or it may have just been windows 8, but either way it took some work on wimdows8 to organize my hard drive much better than before. I have scanned my hd for the need to defrag it, but it shows to be dang near perfect. If you have alot of media on your machine I wonder if its doing file management, which is making it run hot, etc. I know phones are different but when I load a new ROM it takes it several hours to slow down the media system usage.
How many days have you been running the system with wimdows8 ? Do you have a lot of Files/media on your machine ?

The majority of the time, the issue isn't with the Operating System as much as it is with a single application. Check task manager while your computer is running and see what applications are causing the processor to go nuts. If it is indeed a system application, then I would suggest doing a complete wipe and fresh install of Windows 8. You can back up your authentication key by saving a specific folder in the File Browser. Do a search on MyDigitalLife for that information.
Doing a quick search on your Processor, it runs standard at 1.8 ghz, and the 2.9 jump is completely normal. It's a feature called "Turbo Speed". With Windows 8 came upgraded drivers, which probably enabled this feature that you've never noticed.

yes it is true
whoever each and every application running sometimes FC itself or crashes while operation which leaves a unmarked thread or loos end of the application (which also termed as viruses when they start further spreading the system)
in system which were already troubling you creates a problem due to upgrade
