Well, my Touch's screen alignment has gotten so bad that I need warranty repair. Of course, it happened 2 months after I got it, and Sprint will only do a exchange within the first 30 days. I did not get the insurance because I am covered for "all risk" on my homeowners insurance (also, I got the stupid insurance, at $7.50 per month, with the last phone and they only gave me a "refurbished" unit).
Anyway, can the Touch be disc imaged/restored just like a PC and what is the best solution ?

Sounds like you're referring to a hard reset. This will clear everything on your windows mobile device and restore it to factory default settings.
Warning make sure to back up anything you want to save because this will clear EVERYTHING on the phone.
if you can get into the settings menu under the system tab select Clear Storage and follow the instructions there. If not then hold both the Call and End Call buttons (green and red) then hit the reset button with your stylus under the touch next to the usb port (this is kinda tricky to do). Your screen will go off for a sec then you'll see a white screen with hard reset instructions. At this time you can let go of the Call and End Call buttons and then press the Center/Action button to hard reset or the Camera button to cancel.
If your only issue is the misaligned screen then it sounds like a hardware problem and this probably won't help but it's worth a shot.
Good Luck

You misunderstood - I know all about a "hard reset" and that is NOT what I am looking for !!
HTC tech support basically said that a hard reset will not fix this. One way or another, I will probably have to send it in to HTC for repair - I already talked to them. The HTC repair depot is in Long Island and the whole process takes 2 to 3 weeks complete turn-around.
Is there a way to disc image EVERYTHING just like cloning a PC ??

OK i get it now. You're just looking for a backup software. There are tons out there, Spb Backup is probably one of the most popular
Thanks guys, like most I have added software programs, have a call history, contacts, etc.
Will either of these essentially "clone" my entire Touch or are these primarily "file backup" utilities.
I will find them and read the blurbs ... but do you know from personal experience ??
This sure looks like what I am looking for - just I don't need 20 licenses.

I have learned that "backup" and "clone" are different - I need clone but maybe in the WM6 world backup will completely restore to a new device.
SPB Backup is definitely the best. As long as you use the same ROM when you get it back (if you never flashed you'll be fine) you can just run the exe it makes and you won't even know the difference. Restores contacts, calendar, software, reg keys, the whole works. Just like a disc image.

What would you use "if" you flashed the ROM - I have not yet.
Thanks for the input - I am currently leaning toward this app which makes the "cloning" software. I emailed their tech people asking about the functionality and am awaiting a reply.
Anyone with Sprite Backup experiences ?

If ur still lookin, SPB clone is a good one. It' s use to clone company phones so they don't have to install every software and settings on each phones they use. I tried it and it restore everything on my phone. Call logs, sms, settings etc. I cloned my phone for buckup reasons. I accidently clear my storage. I did a hard reset. retore the clone and everything is back. It will clone just the phone memory and storage though. It will not clone your storage card. U can easily copy paste the card contents anyways.

I just evaluated this yesterday. Here is what I had problems with:
1. I learned they have a setting to wipe existing data on restore...I only did a one directory restore. Had to hard reset, then restore again.
2. It won't do your Messages. They have a seperate app for that SpriteArchie for $14.99. I use pimbackup after setting up my e-mail accounts.
I think an app like this should restore your e-mail settings and e-mail. I dumped it.
SPB Backup is great - does a complete backup/restore of your phone including the registry and all system/user files.
The problem with restoring after a flash/rom update, is that every version of the O/S will have version specific registry entries and system files that will be overwritten upon backup.
So if you're swapping out your phone for one with the same version of the rom, Spb is "the cat's meow" whereas the only reliable solution after a rom update, is to manually reinstall all of your apps/settings...

Hello,
My screen decided to crack for no real reason. Honest.
So o2 being the lovely people they are are sending me a new phone (exec).
It arrives tomorrow and I have to send my broken one back.
Quick question needing a quick fix (ie next hour or so...?!?!):
I would like to save / download my texts before sending the phone back. Now I know there have been loads of posts like this, but I am at work and simply do not have the time to trawl through the posts to find the answers.
Can anyone take 5 mins to tell me where I can find a simple to use, free program that can save my texts? Please???
Thanks
HPJ
try spb backup. I use this and THINK it does text messages.
or copy each text message to notepad
orsend each text message to a friends phone
or try sprite backup
I had same problem and for me SPB didn't work correctly Soo, I'm not impressed with SPB.
It can backup texts and all the rest, but have some problems restoring them ;(
I've tried 4 different backups
Good luck!
Cheers!
Chris
Hi,
Sprite have just released a new version of their software (v5.1) and solves alot of issues with wm5.
Might help.
Matt
Spb Backup (latest version 1.1.2) works perfectly for me - no problem whatsovere backing up and restoring sms text messages. emails, etc.
Thanks everyone I'll get onto it!
got my new qtec 9000 but it seems slower than my XDA exec, whats up with that????
anyway is there a way to backup everything!!!
so say i need to hard reset i can just load my backup and it will put all my progs, reg hacks etc settings all back to the way it was before the hardreset? without having to do any reinstalling etc????
I know it's probably too late by now but just in case...
You could use Jeyo Mobile Extender which is an add-on for Outlook - this will sync all your SMS messages into Outlook - it's on the top of my list for software to buy in the future the demo is fully functional for 14 days i think and should do exactly what you want.
Cheers,
Smiffy.
krismc
SPB does this perfectly, and i have had any problem with its usage, even during beta. others prefer sprite... whatever turns you on.
for SPB, yes, you can do a full back up, completely hard reset your device, and do a full restore and walla back to original condition, only question is, why did you hard reset it if you want it back to original condition.
so i have created:
1. virgin device - settings, tweaks, hacks and over bare bones device, with absolute essential software installed, registered and licensed such as Resco, SPB backup and other mission criticals.
2. perfect device - all desirable applications, settings, folder and software preferences, licensed, registered and running, but no active sync
3. two backups automated per week so that if i accidentally drop it, or do something stupid like dodgy software, I have a choice of 4 restore points (last two backups, perfect or virgin) depending on what i want.
hope it helps.
great info mte!
i need a backup coz my first xda exec had to be returned due to dead cam light, my current qtec one wont active sync until iv done a hard reset so m guessing its not liking something iv done, plus thats going back as iv noticed the camera has around 30 dead pixels.
hwever if i make a bacup of my device now will it also take the problems with it? ie the activ sync problem?
oh and i ant decide wether i like the silver or black qtec 9000 whats ur guys thoughts? currently on a black one with red keyboard leds
oh and if u aint noticed iv got a brand new imate k jam for sale incase anyones interested
Hey all,
I'm not usually a person who will just plug random commercial software, but I came across some software that I felt compelled to share with all of you, since we now have GPS, and this could be very useful in the event that you lose your phone, and aid you in having the local authorities get your phone back.
It's called "Sprite Terminator," and it's from the same company who brought you Sprite Backup, which if you haven't used it yet, you should buy it. It's the simplest, most effective backup solution for Windows Mobile I've ever used.
Anyway, on to the meat and potatoes as they say
Sprite Terminator will allow you to do many things with your phone in the case of loss or theft. the program installs, and runs in the background at all times. you can send it an SMS message with a special command, your password you set, and then the action you would like it to perform.
For example, if I send a text message to my phone that looks like this:
spritecmd (password) gps
it will reply to me with a CLICKABLE LINK that takes me to google maps and shows me exactly where my phone is!!!!!
The other options are that you can completely wipe your phone and storage card clean, you can lock your phone so that no calls can be made, you can unlock it, you can change the password, you can get your call log sent to you to see what calls have been made since you lost it, the list goes on...See the bottom of this post for an excerpt straight from the company.
Even better is that it's completely unapparent on my mogul. the program intercepts the SMS so you never see it at all on the phone.
Better yet is that having this installed has not increased my powerdrain (If you know me you know I'm very anal about how much battery power my mogul is using at all times) and it doesn't seem to affect my amount of RAM either, or else it's extremely negligible.
All in all, 15 bucks for this isn't too bad!!
***************************************************************
Here's an excerpt of the features from their site, which is located at
http://www.spritesoftware.com/store...MoreLink&utm_campaign=Terminator-HMP-MoreLink
When will Terminator save you?
* Find your lost phone using GPS - See exactly where your phone is and track it.
* Lost or Stolen Phone - Remotely Lock or Wipe it
* Decommissioning a phone for re-cycling or resale - Don't risk leaks or embarassment
Why should I care?
Personal or Corporate Data on Smartphones means you risk your privacy and/or your company’s confidential information. According to the Gartner Group, over 250,000 cell phones and PDAs are lost or stolen at airports every year, and only 25 to 30 percent of them ever make it back to their rightful owners.
Key Features
* Locate your phone using GPS - See exactly where your phone is and track it on via Google Maps, or Virtual Earth.
* Set and Forget – Once configured, Sprite Terminator is unobtrusive and can only be uninstalled with the correct password
* Remote Delete – Send an SMS message to initiate the wipe operation including all external storage cards
* Remote Lock-Down – Send an SMS message to lock all functionality or re-set the device master password
* SIM Change Alert – Receive a notification SMS message if the SIM card has been changed
* Activity Retrieval – Send an SMS message to retrieve call log entries
* Supports all Windows Mobile 5 & 6 Phones

I'm certain you could, but it might take some fiddling. You can configure an OEM to drop into a kitchen that will put the files and reg tweaks in place, but you first have to figure out what they all should be.
Probably wouldn't be ridiculously difficult, though.

I haven't played with the Kitchen's yet, but I just might be that guy this time. We'll see what my week has in store for me. Anyone know if it's available on a trial basis? I'd hate to drop $15 on it just to see if this can be done. I like the thought of it, but if circumventing it is only a hard reset away, I don't see a need.
Update: NM on the trial, they do offer one. So give it a try if you're uncertain give it a try, but be aware "Don’t plan on hard-resetting your device as part of a trial?" is right there on the page.

I poked around their site, did a search, and didn't see anything regarding a its ability to survive a hard reset. I'd expect to test it with a hard reset. Is it that easy to get around or did they cook some magic into it?
Any progress on integrating it into a Kitchen or anyone's ROM? Thanks--RR
Sprite Terminator Suvives On Hard Reset (Kaiser)
I spent hours working out how to do this but I have been able to cook a rom with Sprite Terminator installed and configured. Now when your device is hard reset, Sprite Terminator continues running fully featured and hidden! If anyone thinks this might be helpful let me know.
Here is a similar program if your pda gets lost/stolen
It's also free!

With this application you can delete all your Appointments, Contacts, Messages, Tasks and/or your Storage Card with a simple SMS.

I am very interested if you all can get this into an OEM. I just purchased both Terminator and Backup and would like to see Terminator survive a hard reset as well. I do use UC but if I wiped the SD card then a hard reset would not install it.
I have been using Remote Tracker for the last couple of months and it does practically everthing sprite does except it is free. check it out

So it works with CDMA and not just GSM networks? I like the Terminator as I can wipe the unit clean. I didn't see that as a feature here, but I do like that it is custom ROM capable so I can cook it in my ROM and it will survive a hard reset.

It is a real pleasure to be able to contribute something useful to the XDA Developers community for a change. I have found these forums to be invaluable in my search for answers!
This is quite a long procedure and not quite for noobs but is clear enough for anyone to follow.
Could someone please be kind enough to make this a sticky for others to find?
The procedure is attached!
Good luck.

That looks way complicated. I guess we are just looking for an OEM folder to put in the Kitchen to include when we cook a ROM. Like the Chess game I have attached is an OEM folder in my kitchen.

Answer to the first question is yes. It will not send an SMS with a GPS fix until you send it the GPS command. Then it will wait (and eventually timeout) until it gets a GPS fix. I don't know what the timeout is (nor is it configurable) but it is quite a long time. If it does not get fix, you get an SMS saying no GPS fix was possible.
Answer to the second question, there is no need since the timeout is quite a while.
Hi
I've had my Jade since February - I love the phone and it's features.
I use spb mobile shell on it, and find it even better.
I just struggle with the crashes - at least every other day it freezes while I am using it. Only twice has it frozen while I'm not using it.
Do I need a hard reset? Should I look at upgrading to 6.5 with all these cooked ROMS.
What about the RUU from HTC???(RUU_Jade_HTC_WWE_2.32.405.3_Radio_Sign_12.41.30.16_0.41.30.12_Ship)
Any advice gratefully received - I daren't tell anyone my phone crashes - they all think it is the 'best phone on the planet' - so I can't say!!!!
Chris
Your phone should still be under warranty. I've had mine for over a year now. It has never frozen but I'd had some active sync problems earlier on. The nice people at HTC replaced the main board. Try sending it in for them to have a look over. Alternatively, uninstall spb mobile shell and see if it still crashes.
In order to flash the 6.5 rom, you'll need to do a hard spl and if you do that, the warranty becomes invalid. I'd send it in first and consider this option later. There's a great thread in rom development which teaches you how to upgrade to 6.5 step by step. Good luck.

You can try a hard-reset (data-loss!) and use it without installing anything for a few days. If it freezes no longer you can keep it. If it does again you should give it to service!

You can avoid data loss by backing up data into SD. I use SPB Backup. You can even choose what to backup. After hard reset, restore data. You can even restore your customised programs / applications.

That is a good idea, normally. In this special case it could be better to test a few days without restoring because we want to see if the handset in it's delivery status is OK or not. I mainly think for programs not to be restored.

Can't help you this time round; but when you buy your replacement, go the Sprite Backup's website. They are offering HTC owners a discount on Sprite backup, plus an app (better than Microsoft's) called 'Terminator' that tracks your phone on Google Maps, disables/wipes it if you want. It will also send you an SMS if anyone tries to change the SIM card. But it will noy operate after a hard reset.

interesting
now if someone would develop an app that could be built into a custom rom that would (unless disabled by a password after a hard reset) transmit a call log, the current sim number, the latitude/longtitude somewhere we'd have a pretty good chance of screwing up any thieve's plans... unless they know how to flash a rom. (although they shouldn't really be aware that this program is activated after a hard reset so they generally wouldn't know to flash the rom...)

The phones gone, i just dont want the lucky sob to see all of my stuff
Will O2 offer to sell you a replacement HD2?
When I was with Orange many moons ago, if you didn't have insurance and lost/damaged your phone they would offer you a replacement (refurbished but looked new) at a reduced price (about a third of the RRP) as long as long as you would then take out insurance.
Just wondering if O2 offer anything like this?
Nope, they just said "We are sorry, there is nothing we can do" lol well something like that.

Did you try to call your old number? Maybe the one who found the phone is honest and will give it back.
when I rang it, went straight to voicemail. this happened all night and into the morning, so eventually I got o2 to block the phone.
I have my replacement sorted now, through my house insurance. (really didnt wanna do that) expensive excess at that! £250!!!
The **** thing about the police, pardon my language is the fact that if handed in I have to check with any police station which it could have been handed in at, there is no centralised lost storage system.
Oh well, you live and learn just hope my phone didnt have as much info as i thought it did!
I might write to HTC see if they can do something via the imei number.

Since we all will have different "settings" in the anti theft program there is not going to be a ROM that can include a functional recovery system. I would like someone here to teach us to replace our ROM with our current phone configuration, that way we can add our GPS protection software, configure it and replace the ROM. Is it possible?

but what I was envisaging was some form of registration with a webserver, probably based on serial number. i.e. with the software installed after every hard reset it would (when connected to the net) send the sim number and serial number to this webserver, thus allowing the registered owner to find all the information they need to really start messing with the thief. and from the updates on that anti-theft software thread i've seen there is talk of a webserver i think so this is probably the track they are going down...
unless the thief was to steal your HD2 and then not even use it once for the internet but that would be crazy
I hope this is the right place to post so please correct me if its not. My question is whether or not i can customize the rom on my tilt 2 and perform a full back up using spb backup or sprite and then have my mom in norther cali load the same rom and restore said backup on her tilt 2?
This would solve many issues for me if i can do this so i appreciate your feedback.
Paul
I know sprite will restore to a new device. So yes, it will work. I don't know if there are network settings or other phone settings that may be copied from your phone to the other. Try it and you can always hard reset if it doesn't work right.
Your mom must be wicked talented if she's able to hose up a phone bad enough to need a fresh ROM install My mom would be lucky to find the power button.
We'll first, she didnt mess up the phone at all, simply bugs within the rom. Shes actually pretty good with these devices (this is the fourth iv gotten her.) Just simply need to get her set up with my exact rom and load my sprite back up so she doesnt have to do a bunch after flashing. So to recap will sprite load my apps/ settings even though its a different tilt 2 i.e. device id?
Thanks for the feedback guys
