nice review ... i have mixed feelings about the md ... sureley 8gb ssd is doable and i would prefer that...
but the thing that initially set microdrive apart from the standard CF card when it first came out was the fact that it had immensly more storage compared to CF cards at the time..
so what you have to ask is why choose to only put in a 8gb when higher capacities are doable ?

I would love to get my hand on a x7510 too. ATM, all I know is that
1) it has 16GB SDD memory instead of the 8GB Microdrive. The capacity per se is not really an attraction for me, and I suspect for most users, as most of us are still prabably not using up a small portion of 8GB, given the ability to have large capacity microSDHC. But the fact that it is SDD is an attraction, abeit not a strong one, from the viewpoint of battery life, and hopefully reliability (an assumption at this stage, from my viewpoint). Currently I install almost all my programs on the microdrive (about 70 active ones and over 100 in total if I include those which I have uninstalled), and use only about 1 GB out of the total 8GB. All my big consuming files are in the microSHDC. This offers me the advantage of being able to change my storage card without affecting the device function, and offers unlimited logical capacity.
2) Better keyboard but losing out 4 hardware buttons. This to me is the real deciding factor. For those who prefer to use it notebook style, then the absence of hardware buttons is not an issue. For those who prefer to use it tablet style, however, the keyboard does not come into the equation while the lost of hardware buttons is a very serious concern. There are just too many things that you need the hardware buttons for. Just to list a few here:
- moving from one email to another.
- changing from one email account to another.
- changing the volume in MP3
- Go to next and previous songs in MP3
- blank out the screen or bring back the screen in MP3
- Pausing and resuming in MP3
With the hardware button, I could put my Athena in the pouch and never have to take it out while using the MP3. Without it, I need to take it out just to do simple thing like pausing and resuming.
The list goes on...
For me at least, x7510 is a significant disadvantage compared to the X750X, for reasons listed above.

But the memory form (SSD) is another factor for me. Being 16 GB is another plus.
I intend to use it the same way as you do. Install all capable apps to the SSD 16 GB and all songs, movies, files, etc... to the micro SD.

Not SDHC. Only supports Mini or Micro cards due to the slot size.

I believe it DOES support SDHC MiniSD cards - but I could be wrong.

Your link shows a microSDHC, not a SDHC.
To summarise,it would not supper SD and SDHC, but would support microSD, microSDHC, miniSD, and miniSDHC.
To use micro sized cards, you need an adaptor.
There seems to be a slight misunderstanding of terms here.
Strictly speaking, you are right eaglesteve but I believe cktlcmd was using SDHC in the more generic term as just the HC part of it and was fully aware of the physical siuze differences and was asking about the Highr capacities so was really asking

No problem mates. Whenever SDHC is used, I have a very specific size is mind, but I know sometimes it is used loosely which creates confusion in communication. Anyway, glad that your question is fully answered. Cheers.
I think there is one more big 'advantage' of x7510 over x7501. x7510 offers USB 2.0 so can now think of using it as PMC. Not to mention the great reliabilty of SSD

Nope its different to the Athena, its 19cm long, so a bit big for even the biggest pocket.
the shift looks awesome!
i want to see some spec though. i wonder how you hold it to your face
when you';re ,making a call.. since it's the size of two stacked dvd cases.
imagine it was smaller than the universal.. with all the same features.
i'd crap in every pair of pants i had.

The Athena is the replacement for the Universal, i.e. it uses Windows Mobile.
This one uses Windows Vista!!!
What a dream-machine...

Been reading various threads on your wonderful site now for a few months, finaly got around to registering. Just wanted to say "wow" with regard to the HTC "Shift". I know what I want for Chistmas.
In the meantime, got myself an Ameo last week - so far so good, although only managing to get about 24hrs battery life on light usage! Stil, the HSDPA rocks, providing you can slap t-mob into giving it to you for free as their t+c's stink!

IMO, it will be running 2 OSes, namely, WM and Vista(yep, a dual boot device). Its specs says that it has 64MB RAM(probably for WM)+1GB RAM(for Vista).
Also, it has 128MB ROM(again, probably for WM)+30GB(for vista)

dual boot wouldn't be practical.
i'm sure the wmobile aspect is integrated. hopefully you can use a mouse with it, if it's as powerful as a computer at that size this thing's amazing.

Well, thats what the specs says ATM. AFA using mouse with it is concerned, you can use a BT mouse with any PPC with BT radio.

The official O2 Website says that the maximum mini sd card they've tested is 2GB.
I'm not sure if a 4GB one will work.... I dunno??

Hi, I was using a 4gb mini SD card on my Atom until recently when I brought Gigabyte GSmart i300. So, there shouldn't be any problems.

sdhc is new tech pretty much, lets manufactures to make higher capacity... and the HC is just that means high capacity, they come in ratings of class 2-6 atm as far as speeds, unlike the sd ones which would have like x50 x120 x150 etc... and it will say most time sdhc or sd high capacity
i believe it has to be hardware support for sdhc, so no firmware cant just be made for it to work without hardware change
i am using a utek 4g mini sd on my atom life, transferred more than 3g of mp3s and movies to the 4g mini sd, so far so good, no problem at all with the utek 4g mini sd, hope this helps.

Disregarding the wiki, the difference is not just in the storage. It's in the driver. The limits are hardcoded and you have to redo the entire driver just to get it to read - and because these drivers are proprietary, you only get SDHC if your vendor chooses to integrate 'em. You're otherwise sadly out of luck.
(I still think SDHC doesn't require new hardware - vendors are spewing out a load of crock as an excuse to not support the older stuff. Especially when you consider that there exist camera firmware updates that convert slots for SDHC use out there - for cameras that were made WAY before even the 2.0 format was on the table. Even Sony's memory stick slots only required a driver update - SD, the reverse engineered clone of the Memory Stick standard, should not be any different.)
I have a Adata MyFlash 4MB x150 card and this runs fine, the TT5 runs of this and is very quick, no problems with WMA or camera pics.
By the way this is an XDA Exec, latest firmware

How is the speed on the card though? Is it slower than say a 2gb do u know?
I did have a 2gb miniSD before and can't tell any difference.
I do transfer a lot of data such as movies and music so have been used to the speed of the two cards. I will say though, having a 4gb card was far more important to me then speed, therefore I didn't care about the speed much.
My new phone Gigabyte i300 comes with USB 2.0 and I must say the speed of data transfer is amazingly quick.

Yeah you're right...... as long as it ain't too slow, speed isn't as much an issue as capacity.
I just bought an atom a couple of weeks back....I think I'll go for the 4gb card when my atom arrives!

well when you think of the speeds, IMO it is a big deal esp when running apps on the miniSD anything that will precache etc...
but you might not notice speed difference because depending on your device, you might have to plug the card into a usb 2.0 card reader to get the benefits of higher speeds... and even then some card readers cant match it...
all i know is through device its slow if your using hte active sync i belive, if you do like one some devices as a card reader i believe it will work with usb 2.0 then, but active sync might be slow 1.1 usb?
also it seems that on the US side, the good high mem 2gb 4gb miniSD are missing, ebay has some but some brands are crap and going with oem can be fishy, if you guys read the issues with the other 4gb cards dieing and what not..
Looking at the Anandtech review, I saw them mention that the Optimus has a Micro SD slot, in addition to the 16GB on board.

Yes, but a SD card is a built in memory! All HTC WinPhone 7 devices have "just" SD cards as additional internal memory, it's cheaper thand NANDs!
On engadget.com or pocketnow.com you can watch some videos about this. One user plugged a 32gb sd card in his HD7!!!
But I don't know if the Optimus 7 has a sd card or a NAND...

As the other guy said, false, look at the focus!
Seeing as the focus isn't being released outside the USA, the optimus is the best bet.
Anyway, the device is out, somebody must be able to confirm.
Actually the Focus is now available on Rogers in Canada as well...
And Samsung is quite generous when you describe your needs to them on their Direct phone line, and they provided me with an unlock code...

I have this phone, the SD slot isn't presente becuase it's a Microsoft dictat for ALL Windows Phone 7 cellphones!!!!!

Where did you hear it had 4GB NAND and 8GB in the SDcard slot? I believe you, I'm just curious. I am pretty sure all WP7 "have" to have an SDcard slot because the SD Card Association said WP7s support SD cards across the board (just not necessarily consumer accessible). Like I said, someone needs to tear this guy down.

Sorry to disappoint guys, I do not possess screwdrivers small enough to open this thing up. I have a set of electronics screwdrivers going all the way down to Phillips Head PH000 but it would need to be at least a PH0000 to open those small little screws. Love the device though! I will pick up a proper screwdriver, but I don't even know where to go about looking for one in Canada.
Oh, what a pity. But shouldn't every DIY store have those?
I have bad news...I took the phone apart completely, all the way down to its component elements and there is no SD slot or card. The 16 GB is NAND and soldered to the board. I will post pictures I took in a different thread for teardown purposes.

All legit androids use microSD, as does the XOOM.
I don't know what you mean by hardware slot.
USB Port? Are you asking how the microSD slot interfaces with the device? Your question is good, because I too have been wondering where the SD Card goes.

I saw it in a video but it was not the same model. It had a different color for the back. But it is odd that on Best Buy site the specs show NO for sd slot and no mention of it on Motorola site or user manual. Not sure why this is a big secret since it is a big deal and in fact, deal breaker for me if it is not there.

I think I remember hearing somewhere around CES that the SD card slot didn't work and was going to be activated by a later patch. What's up with the Xoom being shipped with all kinds of missing functionality?
The BGR hands-on with the Xoom this week mentions the microSD slot is on the top of the device, along with the headphone jack and SIM slot (if applicable). There is a microSD slot on the device. It's been mentioned several times that it will require a software update from Moto to activate it - it's not clear whether that's a Google issue or a Motorola issue. There has been some speculation that it was because Android 3.0 didn't yet support SD cards at the time the Xoom was being demo'd.

I just hope it actually works without waiting for an update. It is odd that Best Buy specs for the device do not mention an SD slot even exists.
Yes. Support WILL come. I would love to know how they are having trouble with something so basic. Based on the Viewsonic G-Tablet labeling internal memory as SD 1 and the SD card as SD 2.. perhaps they are working on a more fluid integration of it. As long as they let me put the 50,000 apps I plan to install on the internal memory similar to App2SD I'm happy for now.

I'm not bashing the iPad, but do the expensive iPad WiFi+3G versions support microSD? No, they don't. MicroSD support will come, likely shortly after launch, and 32GB of storage will be enough to tide people over until it does. I'm not worried about it.

I don't understand this comparison. If Apple had a MicroSD card on the device, it would most definitely work out of the box.

An interesting point. iPad doesn't have the functionality at all and never will based on current devices. You have to decide how much space you want at release, which I find annoying as I always bought the cheapest device.

Apple does take their time and won't rush to just release a product.
I am sure motorola will have a patch ready to go soon if not already. they may have already gotten it done and put on the device.
Being an early adopter of gadgets I understand that sometimes the first release can be a little buggy.
However it bugs me that Motorola did not clarify these issues. No flash and no SD support out of the gate is something that should have been clarified to everyone. I have followed pretty closely the last month and did not realize either of these issues until today.
Having the promise of working features after day 1 is not always a lock as my Galaxy S phone was promised to have an update for flash support and an update to fix the GPS issue yet that has never happened.
i am still buying one on Thursday but will be deciding on the 29th day if I feel I can trust Motorola.
MOTO just wanted to wear the hat of "first to market a honeycomb tablet". Its a race for that hat, with solid patches coming down the pipe pretty quickly.

So, apparently, this could be something NEW to Android.
There is only 1 single partition for all apps, media, files, etc.

I think I talked about this in a different thread, but the reason for the delay in sd card support is because the sd card will not be mounted/unmounted whenever you plug it into the pc. Which I would prefer. Having my sd card mount and unmount every time I plug it into the pc is annoying.
This is the reason for the delay. Rebuilding the wheel takes some time.
To those of us who like to store hundreds and hundreds of full album MP3's encoded at FLAC would love to have more phone storage.
With the NOTE being such a large phone, I sure hope Samsung designs the NOTE III or IV to have "normal" SD Card capability. Not Micro. Since the normal (or next size up) cards have twice the storage capacity.

While it would be nice to have more internal memory, you can put in a 64 GB microSD and it will likely be read (the Note 2 can already read them). MP3's don't necessarily have to reside in internal memory, so why not just use a 64GB micro-SD instead? ;The price is down to under $50 if you shop around.

won't happen !!! by the way Samsung has invented a technique which will allow sdcard to be as large as 128GB or more...and faster than current technologies..maybe wait for Samsung S 5 and Note IV maybe..I doubt if note 3 would come with it

Why would a bigger SD card physically have any impact on what can be read by the phone? Samsung's devices support exFAT and a 64GB max SD card. It's not the micro (vs. standard) SD card that's imposing that limitation. Some other manufacturer's devices don't support exFAT at all and can only handle a max 32GB micro SD card.

I already have one. But I can't fit my whole music collection on it. Even at 240kbps VBR.
I would ideally like to have about 500GB so I can carry ALL of my favorite music.

For that, you'll probably need otg. Meaning a short cable or adapter with micro USB male at one end and female USB at the other end and that will give you the ability to connect a 512GB USB to your phone!

Dude that is crazy. Wanting to 500gigs. Even if I had that much music I would carry it on a 512gig sdd or HDD. The note 2 has otg so it is easy to swap info as needed. I carry drivers and other miscellaneous because I do free troubleshooting and fixing old people's computers. I would to have 128 or even 256 SD cards but I wouldnt mind a 64gb note3 with 64gig micro SD. That would be great and less compromising.

I am 100% with you although it's not just music I would fill 500GB with.
I have a 500GB SSD on my laptop and ideally I would be able to carry ALL OF MY FILES on my smartphone. Android, unlike the other toy mobile OSes, can do practically the same things a regular PC does and the Note II's display is big enough (still small for me though) to ENABLE taking advantage of all of the Android's capabilities.
Plus, there always are Allshare Cast, HDMI out, BT keyboard and mouse and USB OTG. In a pinch, Android smartphones can perfectly act as PC replacements (god I love this stuff and god I hate the guts of crap like iOS and other such dog sh*t!). I travel a lot and live abroad for several weeks at a time, on shorter stays I am not even carrying my laptop anymore.
I am one of those who always buy the biggest internal storage variant and the biggest external memory card which fits, at the moment I have a 16GB Note II with a 64GB Samsung UHS-1 card, if 64GB or 32GB Note IIs were sold in Europe I would have gladly paid for the biggest internal storage option available (plus, of course, the biggest fitting memory card).
The cloud is GREAT but ONLY for backups and quick syncing of SMALL files across different devices. Using it in place of local storage is for non-powerusers...
I hate it so much when I am out and about and I need some less-used file which I am not keeping on my Note (for lack of space...) and I have to retrieve it via Samsung Link (which, BTW, itself is awesome).
As for your idea of using full sized SDs, I would be all for it especially since I advocate 6"/6.3" smartphones and we are saving "so much space" with "wonderful ideas" like micro and nano SIMs (...) so I believe they would fit but that's not going to happen. We are going to have to wait for the normal evolution of micro-SDs' capacity.

Maybe you should ask Sammy to make a note with multiple compact flash slots so you can put twice the storage capacity.
For me 64gb is enough. I just hope they skip 16gb models. To small for for my needs.
I don't do cloud computing because I don't have internet access everywhere.
Anyways I also heard and read about a person who modified his note 2 to have 288gb

So get yourself a 1-terabyte Seagate Wireless Plus drive and use that (or stick it to the back of your phone). 802.11g/n, 1TB capacity, rechargeable battery and, best of all it can act as a bridge to your regular wi-fi router so you don't have to keep switching access points. Comes with a USB 3.0 adapter so you can load up your music fast. Android app available at the Play Store (some people seem to think it's Apple only. It isn't).

And hopefully, somehow, Samsung will take notice of my request or someone else's and implement massive storage into the Note IV.
It's far too late for the Note III, and possibly too late for the IV as well. These things are already being designed well before the previous version is even released.
USB-OTG... a great solution for keeping your storage in a particular location. Not much good if I want to suddenly have access to all my storage when I'm at a friends house though.

I'm not a newb. I know what my CURRENT options are.
This thread is about hoping for future, BETTER options as far as storage goes.
And yes, multiple MicroSD cards in one phone would be a suitable alternative.

The 64GB "limit" doesn't actually exist. It's just that there are no larger capacity cards. If you align the pins or use a correct adapter you can use a 128GB card without any problems.
OP, I hope you're actually ripping the FLACs from a CD or getting them ripped, converting MP3s to FLAC won't do you any good.

I'm sure Sammy would do it, but at what cost? The unlocked model of the Note 2 is already north of $600 ... even with carrier subsidies a phone with what you want would cost at least that, probably $2000 unlocked. All the fun and games that would make it possible just isn't worth it to me. No smartphone is.

$1400 more for a SD card slot compared to microSD card slot... sounds legit
A better solution would be a phone with 2 microsd slots. Wouldn't cost a small fortune.
