How to copy file with 'ROM' attribute? (or how to change that file attribute?) - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

Hello,
I am trying to copy a file (from my smartphone to SD card), which have a 'ROM' attribute set and... it is impossible - acces denied is showed (even in Resco Explorer, Total Commander). I can't even change that attribute.
Please help me to find any solution
Best greetings,
RA

You should be able to extract files from the ROM file on your PC thanks to the tools provided in one of the sticky about ROMs modifications.

Unfortunatelly...

I have extracted an 'nb' file from my ROM file, but WinImage can't open it ("not FAT16, FAT32 file"). It is WM6 image file, what tools to open this 'nb' file?
Best greetings,
RA

I, too, am trying to find a way to copy some ROM attributed files.
Ultimately, I am trying to move/copy some apps from one smartphone (WM5) to another (WM6). Is there a way to copy them to a zip file and move the files that way or maybe even using a backup copy (i.e. using Sprite Backup?) and restoring to a different phone?
Any help or direction would be appreciated. If there is another thread out there, please be sure to point me to it since searching brings up a lot of different threads.

u need to extract the rom.

Funny, but you make it sound so easy... ;-) I've been searching to figure out how to do that and found some instructions I'm hoping I can follow for the one phone, but not sure it it will apply to the old phone (WM5). If I do manage to dump the ROM, where does it go and does it extract the files in cab format for easy upload?
Update: I found a file extractor at http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/ppc-6700-xv6700/56057-6700-rom-dump.html which may have originally come from Buzz... (thanks Buzz!)? so now I have all the files and modules off the old phone, but am running into some issues installing. I can transfer the files indirectly, and can find the specific application file, but when trying to run the app, it tells me that it's still missing files to enable the program. Any ideas on how to determine which files they might be or how to install the files via Activesync?

Winampaq skins

Does anyone use Winampaq? If so, have you managed to use any of the Winamp 2.x skins?
I'm having trouble trying to use them. Basically, I put the relevant skin (.wsz) file in a folder, but when I use the browse function on Winampaq, the list only shows the folders and not what is contained within each folder
Any ideas?
Many thanx
change the wsz extention to zip and unzip the files to a dir
and point to that dir using winampaq
and they all work at least all the skins i've tried
Thanks Rudegar, but you must excuse my ignorance. I have zipped the wsz file, but I can't extract it directly to my XDA2. I have to extract it to my desktop first, before syncing the file to the XDA2. But once extracted to the desktop, it is a .wsz again so zipping it hasn't made any difference.
Could you explain to me step by step how you do it, please?
I'm using "StuffIt" to zip the file, but I guess the results would be the same as if using "WinZip".
Once again, please excuse the ignorance, but I really want to change the skin as the default one isn't very pleasing to the eye!
Many thanks
you have to CHANGE the extention of the file
before
skinname.WSZ
after
skinname.zip
you have to edit the file name not zip the file
wsz is just a zipped file to begin with
after you change the extention you can just copy out the stuff from inside it
i use total commander both on my pc and on my xda because it makes it easy to work with zip files and other things, it sees zip files like dir's and you can copy stuff from inside them without any problems
Many thanks for your help, Rudegar. I will give it a shot...

How to copy .dll files from the device?

I tried to copy a bunch of .dll files from \Windows
I encountered a couple of problems doing that:
1. Some files are not shown on the PC in Windows Explorer though I've enabled viewing hidden and system files. However, these files are shown on the device in Resco Explorer, but can't be copied to e.g. \Storage Card
2. Some files are shown on PC in Windows Explorer but are in use and therefore can't be copied
What are the tricks to back up those files?
PS: My device (S710 Vox) is unlocked using M$ Security Manager
No tricks.
If you bothered to learn anything about your device you would know that these files are part of ROM and can not be copied out.
Don't mean to be rude but this was asked and answered many times before. Do a search on "ROM dump"
Yeah stupid me...
Dumped the ROM and got the files I want
(http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Vox_HowToDumpRom)
Actually I can't find coredll.dll in my ROM dump.
I used viewimgfs.exe to dump Part02. I can't use viewimgfs.exe on Part00 and Part01.
Is there another tool which can retrieve coredll.dll and perhaps other missing files?
Another question: can the S710 be flashed by using imgfs tools v1.82 to create the image(s) and a generic HTC flash tool?

WM5 copy/move files

I am trying to copy or move a file from \windows which is a .dll file. I am getting an error when trying to do this programatically in C# with .NET. Does anyone know how to access the files in \Windows directory without access restrictions?
Thanks,
heimlich
if they are in the rom one cant just delete or in some cases access them runtime only at pre flashing rom image time
Could you be a bit more detailed? I want to get access to a .dll to see what their function calls are. How can I get the dll onto my desktop to view it?
Thanks,
heimlich
try copying them to your sd card using total commander
I tried that. I get an error telling me it is unable to copy files. Looks similar to error I get when I tried with native file explorer and .net File.Copy();
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
heimlich
If it is in ROM, you can't copy it right out as a file, the best you can do is to LoadLibraryEx it with LOAD_LIBRARY_AS_DATAFILE, then if you can locate it in memory, you can dump it out to a file on disk.
How do I know if something is in ROM? I know it is in \windows and that is about it and in file explorer I can see the file as .dll.
thanks,
heimlich
One way is to use GSFinder. It marks ROM files with a different icon. Most of the files that are in the \Windows folder are in ROM.

How to copy a file in ROM out to new folder

I'm trying to copy a file that's in use in the ROM out somewhere. Is there any way to do this?
alternatively, is there a way to read/explore .bin files (rom)? either option is fine with me.
You need to dump and unpack the ROM. Precisely how to do this depends on the specific model of your device.
Please read the WiKi for more info.

Zip files?

Hey all, I'm fairly new to modifying my diamond, I know about cab files, and how you just drag into internal storage. but what do I do with zip files? the only time I've been able to do something with one was when I opened it and there was a cab file inside. but what do I do with a zip file to get the files onto my phone? thanks
also, I have rom version 1.09 on my phone, i'm pretty sure there's a new version available? would that be the same thing as flashing the phone, or is that just an update you do somehow. thanks
Updating your software to a new version is called flashing, whether you do it with an official ROM or a cooked ROM.
About your question:
If you download a .zip file, just open it on your pc with a program like winzip or winrar and the content of the zip file will be extracted to your computer. Just copy those file(s) to your phone and use them, easy as that!
Zipping a file just makes it smaller, so its less heavy to download for people with a slow internet-connection. A zip file alone isn't a program or something, it just contains other files in a smaller form.

so how do you install a zip file as a program not just as an app in a folder?
cool, thanks whis that helps
edit: do you just drag the files into internal storage? I dont understand what I do with all of the individual files when they are on my phone. for instance, i'm trying to get a diamond theme for s2u2, and I have all the individual files on my phone, wallpapers and templates and such, than what do you do with them?
can anybody help me
same problem here! did you get it figured out?
no i still have no idea what to do with zip files, unless there are cabs only inside them. haha please help! I know why so many apps on here are zips, just don't know how to use them

Typically theme files for s2u2 (and most other apps) will need to go in a sub folder of the program's folder in program files.
For example when you install s2u2 there is a directory created on the device as follows: /My Device/Program Files/S2U2/gfx
So you would put the files from the .zip in that folder if they are for themes.
I think this is what you were asking. Each program is different and may or may not have a folder for themes. Its best to ask about that from the individuals that develop or provide the program.
Hope this helps!
powe that helps a little bit. So say in that gfx folder for s2u2, you have all those individual files, wallpapers, clocks, ect...how would I go about applying that to s2u2? I guess thats my main question, I can see where all the files are on my phone from the zip, don't know how to use each of them
