I don't like them very much...
I think that they are a bit prosy....
I use a song, called "Tick Tick Boom" by The Hives....

you can use literally any mp3 (and other formats) of your choice as a ring tone (btw, nice choice on the Hives.) you must put your audio file one folder away from root, meaning the path has to be something like
/Storage Card/*.mp3
/Program Files/*.mp3
/My Documents/*.mp3
etc etc

First you have to copy the ringtone you wannna use, into the windows/rings-directory. ( my experience tells me that with SMS-tones, it's actually better to just put it directly in the Windows-directory, I have renamed mine, so my custom-ringtone is now my default )
Then go to Start/Settings/Sytem/Add ring tone, when it's finished reading all your soundfiles, add the ringtone you want to use.
Then go to Start/Settings/Personal/Sounds & Notifications, open the dialogue-box, scroll down 'till you find SMS- settings, add your ringtone and bingo
Hope this helps...

Don't copy them to Windows\Rings.
Copy them to Windows.
made a mistake of purchasing this software called "Ringo" that handles ringtones and sms tones. Should have just moved the ringtones to the \windows folder
Thx 4 your replies. i did copied 2 files to \Windows folder. One .mp3 and one .mid and neither appeared in sounds&notifications on incoming text message... What am i doing wrong guys?

Changing the sound when message comes ?

Hi,
How can i replace the sound when message comes with an mp3 ? It only accepts midi i think.
Thanks
Put the tone in /windows/rings folder or root of storage card.
Buy an iPhone. Thats the only way for people like you.
If u r usin WM then copy .wav file in the windows folder and then change the notification sound from notifications.

The guy asked a question, don't be a such ****.
Message sounds can also be selected if the .WAV is stored in /Storage Card/My Documents too. This folder works for incoming call alerts and other alerts too (except Alarm tones, they have to be n /Windows for some reason!).
With my tones in my card's My Documents, and my .tsk homescreens in my card's root directory, no need to copy files after a ROM flash!

So let me guess - when you got your first HTC device you were a genius from the outset????? I think not Einstein, cut the person some slack and help - if you can that is!!! Otherwise, hold your tongue / fingers otherwise you may learn that there are others within these forums that can be equally smarmy!!!
To answer the question - you can look at asim.khans response, it is the same way that I managed to do this very thing.
Good luck.
thanks guys,
I'm sorry I couldnt reply instantly. I didnt know a wav file can be selected for a message ringtone. I wanted to select an mp3 file to be a message ringtone, I was just wondering maybe an application might change the settings and make it possible.
For the IPhone isseu, I dont think it's good for me because I love my HTC and I dont prefer iPhone, I used an iPhone for a couple days (I'm kinda nerd) and I prefer installing and uninstalling applications, trying new things, writing some little applications for my phone. It's the fun part, not playing with your fingers
Thanks for the replies

Word! Couldn't agree more.

Custom Sounds for Text Messages etc.

Guys,
My apologies if this has been covered before.... Only I've had a really bad day in Theatre (I lost a loving, warm and friendly aged Lady earlier) and all I want to do now is pack up for today and go home.
So.... I have a few custom sounds in .wma format that I've placed into Windows/Rings and would like to use these for my Text Messages, Email Alerts etc.
Trouble is the Sounds & Notifications list does not show these in the drop down list of available sounds.
If I select Phone they do show but any of the others and they are not displayed.
Therefore, the question being ~ Is there any way to have these custom sounds displayed and readily available for my Phone?
Thanks in advance.
Ringtones need to be be in the Rings folder.
Don't know why but anything else needs to be in the Windows folder to appear.
Here is one from Python Holy Grail that I find good.

That is quite strange...... All my Ringtones are located in Windows/Rings.
I don't have a folder named Rings in the root.
Thanks for the Monty Python... appreciated.
Apologies, let me clarify.
Ringtones in Windows\Rings
All others Windows\
Hope thats clearer.
My Sounds and Notifications show all the wav files in the windows directory, plus any wav/mp3/wma in My Documents (device or storage card).

Yes thanks... Got it now.
I've moved them into the Windows folder and they now work.
It's quite confusing when we mention ring tones and basically the ones I will be using are a ring tone.
But now I can see what you mean.... The default ring tones are in the Windows/Rings.
All other ring tones are in the Windows main folder.
Thanks.

Cheers for the contribution..... Didn't appreciate you could use .mp3 as well.
Thanks.
Carrying this forward, is there any way we can change the 'tap' sound?
The iPhone sound is very nice when you tap the screen but the custom HTC one is awful

Text Message Tones...

Apologies if this has been posted, my search capabilities are limited as on a faulty UMPC at the mo...
Is it possible to change the SMS received tone to a MP3 file or other audio file? Ideally without any third party software...?
Cheers!
Try Ringo Pro...it works perfectly..!!!!

If you just mean the system default go to messaging, settings, select ringtone. If you want custom tones for individuals Ringo.

Cheers for that, but for a feature that is available on most devices, it's not something that I'm willing to pay extra for... I'm sure the developer has done a great job, but I don't need different ringtones for different contacts or any of the other features...
The Lite version doesn't seem to have this bit, atleast, not by it's description....
I guess I'll just have to make do with "Captains Log"... unless anyone else know's of any other methods or free market place applications..?

I've got a MP3 file I would like to use... can convert it to any other format, but that's the one I want... cheers though!!
If you create a directory 'notifications' on your sd card and drop the file in there it should appear on the list for selection when changing notifications.

That works great! Thanks for the idea.
By puting mp3 ringtones in a folder called 'ringtones' on the sd card, you can use mp3's with ringo lite

If you had read above, you'd know you don't need any other software for that....
-bZj
If you have root, you can also do this so that all of the notiications, ringtones, alarms etc ..... are moved from your phone to your SD card.
Code:
mount -oremount,rw /system/dev/mtdblock3 /system
cp -r /system/media/audio/ringtones /sdcard/
rm -R /system/media/audio/ringtones
obviously change it for notifications and alarms.
you can use any sound u like 4 any notification u like by simply dropping the file into the windows folder in the file explorer under my device works for me cheers guys

Find where you have it stored on your phone (Downloads maybe?) and then Copy / Paste it to that folder. Good luck!

The only ringtones I can see is LG ringtones. When I click the ADD icon it only shows me my music. I copied all the ringtones I had into the default Ringtones folder and they still don't show up

Look for another folder. Especially on internal storage. Sometimes there is another folder buried within another, such as "Media".
