Sources are confirming the adoption of the linux platform or symbian platform. Its most probably not going to take massive shape this year, but by next year we will see a significant change.

"smartphone" is generally used also for devices with touchscreen...
I think HTC is afraid of MS doing again what they have done with the media players business: they used other hardware vendors to create market perception and later they went for their own product (Zune) with a different DRM and left the "PlaysForSure" clan with cold feet.
Now that Apple has its own branded phone Microsoft will have to have a MS branded phone soon and that could mean bye bye to HTC and the other vendors, so better jump ship before it's too late.
This announcement could also be only a warning to MS; at the moment HTC is practically the only company in the world that could throw a blow at Microsoft: without HTC the MS market share in smartphones would fall to a level of insignificance and they would have to rebuild their mobile phone market share from scratch.
Btw, is there any other OS than wm6 that we can port into right now like linux or something, I really love trying stuff like this out. Is there any way to put s60 v3 or even linux onto my trinity?

There's a Linux kernel out there somewhere - iPaQ 3900 was the last device I saw it working on eons ago...

Doesn't boot completely on Hermes or Trinity so far.

Not really, in terms of Windows Mobile devices and WM5, you had the Pocket PC and Smartphone edition, the latter of which is on devices without touch screen e.g. HTC Meteor, Canary, Tanager etc.
I don't know if you mean "generally" as in all devices that are smartphonish on the market - you've got a lot that's not touch screen there too e.g. N95.

With "generally" I mean what you read in market researches. When you read about the Symbian market share that includes both S60 (no touchscreen) and UIQ (touchscreen) phones. Same goes for Windows Mobile.
The term "smartphone" was not invented by microsoft (did they ever invent anything? ) and it means "phone where you can install and use third party software beyond java applets" as opposed to "feature phone" where you can only use what is preinstalled in the phone (and only add Java applets).
So can anybody make an OS which I for ex can put on my p3600 for ex.

HTC has the best position in the market because of the Windows line. When they abandone the Windows platform, they give their market share to HP for example.
HTC also knows that Microsoft integrates everything from Office, Exchange, VOIP, Sharepoint to Live, etc.
Saying one thing and do some expirements with Linux, puts the pressure on Microsoft for nice deals (cheaper OS) for more HTC profit.
I haven't looked for other sources, but, a reading of the article hardly supports the assertion that HTC is "officially abandoning" WM. I mean, the ONLY quote just says they're "looking at" other OS's.

i hope they turn to Linux, any exp coder will know that M$ is a piece of **** when it comes to resources, so look forward to faster, more stable phones. On the down side is the lack of app's supporting linux, but that said, the moment it becomes a reality, I'm there....

Indeed so! BSD is now a reality on the iPhone - the mind boggles at how the market could look in 12 months. Mind you, I still prefer my Trinity to the iPhone but am particularly peeved that HTC haven't seen fit to officlally release WM6 for it.

If HTC would evolve a bit and embrace the 3rd party app model present on the iPhone, enhance it a bit and add support for fetching data from hardware components like gps modules, not like java, but something like Adobe® AIR™ for mobile devices with offline capabilities, that would be great foe everybody, most of the apps we use are for improving/replacing the poorly designed windows mobile apps&interface, other can be fully replaced by web apps, codewallet for example, imagine it with offline and online modes, sync between both, and you have your passwords accessible on any device or desktop, multimedia editing is also possible using flash and server-side code, like picnik.com, so, it would be necessary to create new apps, but this new model would be far better than the current one, it would also eliminate the need for manual app updating, it would... heh, make cracking impossible, so, good for the devs for that and also for the easier&cheaper development(VS not needed, html+css+flash+javascript+rails[heh ]), it would also give HTC the freedom to create a sleek GUI(compiz and stuff?) since its easier to replace the linux gui than wmobile, no licensing fees from ms i think.

As far as we’ve heard so far, the details we broke in January are spot-on. Much of the interface is very Zune like. As we said then, manufacturers will not be able to make massive modifications to Windows Phone. Microsoft specifically said that things like HTC’s TouchFlo will not exist on Windows Phone.

Well, Microsoft told us why. Flash on smartphones is EXTREMELY buggy, doesn't always work, and when it did work it wasn't very good quality. The only time it worked reasonably was in Skyfire, and the developers didn't get even the Flash player part from Adobe!! Although, it was nice to have the option, but at least Adobe is trying to improve it to include it with Windows Phones...eventually.
Oh, yes, and the HTC HD2's proccessor DOES support Windows Phone 7, but I don't think it has the required 4-point touch or search button (I suppose we could use the home key...).
Edit: I just found out that the HD2 has the correct minimum resolution for Windows Phone 7, WVGA.

I do not think it is spot on. Even some things you are saying here are your assumptions, not something MS stated. Where did now MS state specifically that HTC's Touch Flo will not exist on Windows Phone.
From what I see so far, MS has focused on what they will require vendors to provide, not on what they will ban them from providing. According to your logic, anything MS did not explicitly mention in this announcement is "specifically" banned.

This is true. The future is HTML5, which is every bit as capable, and more stable, will leave Flash in the dust where it belongs.
What we really should be asking is if these new smartphone platforms will support HTML5 and WebOS.

Not today, but the nails are in the coffin. It won't be long until the rest of the world realizes, but it won't happen until other leaders take the leaps necessary to put other options on the table, and HTML5 support will be a part of MacOS, iPhoneOS, et. al. Steve Jobs has made that clear.
Stability and performance is what we are all after. Say what you want about Apple, but they have a design team that is maverick enough to make the leaps and not worry about legacy support.
We need to begin to make the break away from Flash.

Well, actually a Microsoft person (don't know what he does)
told an Engadget editor that while he was giving him a demo of Windows Phone 7, which was recorded. I think so, that is. It may have been a video from another site or quoted, but I remember Microsoft saying that somewhere.
The HD2 does, and isn't the EVO pretty much the HD2 with the addition of the front facing camera and android?
Id like to try WP7 for a few days or weeks and see if its worth switching over, but I dont really see it happening.

Android=Free, IOS+WM=$$. This is how it looks, Google made android and just threw it out on the streets and periodically supports it, Windows and Apple have thier OS's in their basement under lock and key, with an armed guard sitting on a stool.
the reason is that only android is open source. Most of the multi OS phones are there native (iOS or WinMO) and android. this can be done because they get the code for android and it is open source. Since iOs and Winmo dont release the info it is much much much harder to actually get the thing up and running on a non-native phone.
HD2 was a winmo native phone so it has winmo and people have made it so it can run android. Evo is an android native phone ... thus it runs android.
Additionally as stated there would be licensing issues as well and most respectable sites would not allow it to be posted since it would be warez.

I would like to try WP 7... I wouldn't give up my 4G to test it, though. But I think WP 7 looks sexy

Mis-information .... android is open source but that is not where porting for a touch-pro2 come in at, someone has to write the code and drivers for that port to work right... also there are some OS ports done on android phones like the nexus 1 and 2 .... and WP7 is definately not open source but is running fine on the HD2 so really its just up to some to develop the software needed for said OS ports.

This is not mis-information. writing the codes and drivers with out the source is vastly more difficult then writing it with the source. I did not say it was not possible i just said that a big reason you see android on iOS and WINMO phones is because android is open source. this is true since having the source code makes writing the drivers much easier and very few people have the ability or drive to write drivers for an entire phone to work with a new os. in the case of WP7 it is likely that many of the drivers designed with previous versions of WinMO work in the new version as is or with very very slight modifications which would again make this much easier then creating a new driver from scratch for a closed source os.
If you honestly think android being open source isnt a huge contribute to the reason that most other os phones get android and most android phones do not get the other os then i dont know what to tell you.

Dev Preview of 8.1, will be released, of microsoft source during the first half of April.
And WPCentral source, announce April 14.
And for those who did not know (but I think you're all aware), the WP8.1 SDK is officially available in Release Candidate.

Yes! All Windows Phones can get updated to 8.1. It depends on when (and sadly, if) your carrier releases it. However if you want to get past that, you can just join the dev preview and it'll be downloadable sometime this month. Sources have been saying either the 10th or the 14th. So lookout

I really thought they said (at build) that 8.1 preview was supposed to be available for download today 4/8.
They do. What part of @desolate1's post suggested otherwise? Join the dev preview program and get the update straight from Microsoft (as soon as it releases) while the bits are fresh!
It's only if you want to get it through your OEM and/or carrier that you'll need to wait, and risk disappointment. Reading comprehension, yo!
