Internet sharing on WM5 with Wifi and proxy - Networking

I have wm5 with an old rom ... no ICS

HTTPSnoopProxy.class file, copy it to, say, the root of your "access point" Pocket PC and get a decent Java Virtual Machine (I recommend CrEme 4.00 because of its superior speed, reliability and moderate memory consumption).
Install CrEme on the device that you would like to act as the Bluetooth Access Point. Then, on the same PDA, write a link file that invokes CrEme on HTTPSnoopProxy.class.
The link file will be, assuming you install CrEme in the main memory, as follows:
255#"\Windows\creme\bin\CrEme.exe" -Ob -classpath \ HTTPSnoopProxy 8080
To make your life easier, I've uploaded an example file here – you only need to put it in, say, \Windows\Start Menu\Programs so that it's easily accessible. It, again, assumes that CrEme 4.00 is installed into main memory and HTTPSnoopProxy.class is copied to the root directory of your PDA. If not, you must modify either the path to CrEme.exe or the parameter of -classpath.
Then, just set up a Bluetooth PAN network and find out the IP address of the "server" (the "Access point") PDA

using the HTC_PCM_Routing dll and is now using a custom dll. By using a custom dll I have complete control over the processing and can pass the multiple IO control calls need to get the audio routed. You may notice a funny icon in the phone app while audio is routed, I think this is tty mode (not sure), but, it works to do what I needed. Also, I have not messed with Voice Command activation yet, but, I do think that should be possible. I have not hard-reset tested this cab so please let me know if there are any issues. I also moved serial5 to serial9, so you may have to manually delete the serial 5 driver keys. After installing the cab if it does not work correctly, make sure the widcomm/plugins/handsfree/audiosetupdll says SD_PCM_ROUTING.dll
I'll also attach that dll separately for those who just want to replace the key and dll.
One note, the audio routing is full time, once activated all audio all the time will be routed.

I found The fluxist WiFi Hack -
These instructions will allow you to connect to the Internet connection on your Hermes via WiFi. Essentially, you will be turning your Hermes into a WiFi access point.

So I wondered if The fluxist WiFi Hack could work with the proxy not sure how best to proceed.
Is it better to run the proxy and install the widcomm stack
or try to adapt the fluxist WiFi Hack to work with the proxy
or just to give up and wait until I falsh wm6 (i'd rather not go this way)
Can anyone provide a step by step on getting this to work?

First, do you want to share your Wi-Fi or GPRS connection? It's only in the former case that you'd need the first (Java) app; with the latter case, go for the "hacked" one.

Thanks - i like to share my 3G/Gprs with my laptop ideally.
I'm guessing that I still need the proxy as I have a rom without ICS built in

WIFI to Bluetooth
First of all please don't mind my simple English.
I want to know if it's possible to do something similar.
Except:
My Device(HTC Wizard WM6) is connected to Wifi accespoint or using Desktop internet from USB.
can I share this connection over Bluetooth?
so my other mobile can use Wizards internet.
Internet from as desktop --> HTC Wizard --> BT on other mobile.
or
Wifi Accesspoint --> HTC Wizard --> BT on other mobile.
thnx.

Bluetooth sending of files ??

I know the xda II is not capable of this out of the box... Are there any third party apps that would allow me to do this??
The problem is that the XDA II uses the limited Microsoft Bluetooth stack that came with Windows Mobile 2003 instead of the full-featured Widcomm Bluetooth stack used in iPAQs. The Microsoft Bluetooth stack doesn't support the File Transfer profile nor the Network Access profile. Someone has taken the Widcomm stack from the iPAQ and adapted it for the XDA II. Just search this forum for "BluetoothGPS.zip" and you'll see lots of discussions concerning this. But note that this is a hack.
Hi Jargon, Thanks for the reply.. Would it do my xda II any harm if I download it? or would it mess it up? .. If I download the bluetoth gps thru what software can I tranfser files via bluetooth? Thanks

I haven't used the hack myself (I didn't want to void my warranty). So I can't speak from experience. But you can find the info you need by searching the forum for "BluetoothGPS.zip".
Nah, If it voids the warranty... Jargon, Thanks for the reply again, would you happen to know how to remove application icon/shortcut on the program menu that has already been removed from the system? another thing, I also accidentally auto-configured the phone to the 1010 settings, how can I remove the settings and the app icon/shortcut on the program menu? thanks

Yeah, just launch File Explorer and go to the "WINDOWS\Start Menu" folder. Look for the unwanted shortcut in that folder and in all its subfolders. Then delete the unwanted shortcut and you're done.

You're not alone. I once made the same mistake. To fix it, I used PHM Registry Editor to search and delete the "1010" settings in the Pocket PC registry. Then I manually reconfigured all the connection settings (Settings->Connections->Connections->Advanced and MMS Composer options). After that, I removed the AutoConfig icon from the Start->Programs list to make sure I don't make the same mistake again.
I hope this helps.
you bet it helps.. I did it !! I removed the application icons at last. Thanks Jargon.

You can send file using bluetooth, just launch File Explorer (don't use Resco Explorer, it doesn't work with Bluetooth file transfer), tap and hold the file you wish to beam, then select Beam File... from the popup menu, just wait for your available bluetooth devices to be listed, then just tap to send the file...
I'm glad to be wrong on this one. I've just successfully transferred a file from my desktop PC to my XDA II via Bluetooth (Microsoft stack). However, I still can't figure a way to transfer a file from my XDA II to my desktop PC. My XDA II can detect my desktop PC but the file transfer always fails.

I managed to get that file, however I am no nearer getting my pc and xda2 to sync, or send/receive files. I noticed that once the patch was loaded that "bluetooth" option in activesync vanished. My pc can see my xda, however it cannot browse the files or vice versa. Simple tasks should not be this difficult, I have spent a whole day on this, I even used the latest and greatest widcomm software to no avail.
As an addition to the above, I thought I would try to see if I could have better results using an ipaq 3870, within 10 minutes I had Obex file transfer and activesync through bluetooth working. All I managed on the xda2 was to send files to the desktop using right click/beam command. The ipaq software is far better and does almost all the work for the user.

Tethering in linux [SOLVED]

I spent a lot of time getting the 6800 to sync under linux. Finally, using synce, I have done it, all access to the phone.
Now I want to tether. I have noticed under wm6, the wmodem app is in \windows folder, but it will not start. I know you used to have to enable it via a ## code, but it wont work on the 6800.
So I either need to figure out how to get the wmodem app to work under wm6, so i can have the phone emulate a modem. Or, the second option being to possible use ndiswrapper to use it, since it does show up as a generic rndis device, and under my system as soon as i plug it in (with adv net. function tab checked under connections>usb to pc) it shows up as an ethernet device.
Please linux users jump in and lets figure this out!!
I'm not a big linux user, but this would be very good to know!
I know they tethered the iphone by setting up some sort of proxy on the phone then tethering via wifi, surely this could also be possible using windows mobile given the right app. Please dont tell me im the only linux user out there that cares!!
BTW.. the iphone runs a modified *NIX/BSD im jealous
EDIT: I have also been successful in use the program 'synce' to initiate an activesync connection with the pda. Doesnt pdanet tunnel through a connection like this?? surely there are some fancy iptables or route commands to accomplish this in linux.
USBModem
USBModem is supposed to be able to work with Linux.... There is a free trial to check out.. I'm planning on using it once the Asus Eee comes out..
http://www.mobile-stream.com/usbmodem_wm.html
usbmodem will only give you some dialup scripts which wm6 DOES NOT supoport over usb. I did however solve my problem. The svn version of synce's usb-rndis-lite is the holy grail.

Can you post the resources you used, or the steps you took, to accomplish this? I'd like to tackle that problem before getting into tethering.
I see the device in dmesg as an RNDIS device (not handled by the ipaq module), but then I can't get multisync or synce to do anything with it after that. All I need to do is save my contacts, and be able to transfer files. I'm going to be replacing my Mogul soon, and I'd like to be able to restore everything once I get the new one. But in my apartment, windows machines are a rare commodity.
Can you post a wlkthrough as I joined the site for practically this very reason. Thanks in advance

Network attached storage drives......

Hello all. I did ask this question in the Hermes section but no answers slo I thought I would as in here as it is a networking type problem.....
I have a Maxtor Shared Storage II drive on the wireless network. All the XP PCs can see and access the device no problems.
The Hermes is running official WM6. When I use Resco Explorer to try to map a network drive, it isn't there, but any XP computer that is switched on at the time, is in the list in Resco.
If the I check the properties on the NAS's folders on a XP machine then its reported as a NT server 4.9 drive??
The drive has the feature of a media server on the menu system which as yet I havnt had time to play with so far.
Any help greatfuly appreciated
Cheers
Chris.
not sure about yours but the tests i read about those maxtor nas mybooks require some special software on the pc to access them
if that is the case with yours and they dont have an ppc version
you are out of luck
Yes I do agree there is maxtors software on the PC to access various functions, but before I installed the software I could see the public folders that were already installed on the NAS...!
Chris
It's nothing to do with them being NAS Storage. As far as the network is concerned they are just windows network shares. I'm having the same problem - I can't access shares over my wifi network on my Hermes.
I have a file/web/ssh server and I can easily access it using a browser or with PocketPuTTY and I can ping it with vxutil but I can't connect to the shares even though I can ping the hosts and see the networked devices in Resco and PocketLAN. Total Commander doesn't work either!
I'm sure it's something to do with routes/subnets and have tried setting the proxy options in "settings">"connections">"connections">"advanced">"select networks" and also changing the options for "My network card connects to" in Network Adaptors.
I want to use a "cooked" rom but this seems to be the source of the problem - I've flashed another rom on my Hermes and it connected fine. I'm having the same problem with my HTC Universal and I also had a problem with my Wizard but I managed to fix it by modifying the "connections" (see above!).
I've got the same problem with my NAS (Maxtor Shared Storage II).
BTW, I don't think the Maxtor Connect Manager utility is required , I've connected to the NAS from XP and OS X without the utility running.
My 8525 (WM 6) cannot see the NAS in network neighborhood , even though the IPs are pingable.
The 8525 cannot see the share on my MacBook Pro either.
I have no problem with a share on my Win XP SP2 computer ... it even streams media (divx, MP3 , windows media) to my 8525. Mapped with Resco Pocket Explorer with no problem.
I think the MAC and the MSS II (www.openmss.org) are linux/Samba network based and WM cannot connect. If any linux guru can verify and provide assistance, it would greatly be appreciated.
Wow ! Streaming media from a NAS on the 8525 ... a dream so far ......
I don't think this is a linux problem - the shares I am accessing are on a linux samba server. I can access the shares using different rom versions on my hermes and my universal (just not using the rom I really want to use!). My wizard (WM6) connects to the shares fine!

Can you share the method or application and version your using to make the share with Samba ?
Is the NAS/Share visible in network neighborhood or is the connect string manually entered ?

When I have used resco to attempt the connection I can see the host PCs in the network neighborhood but cannot see the shares on each host PC (neither windows or linux).
I have always connected using the netbios name - using the ip address has never worked as far as I can remember. I have always used Total Commmander (I only tried other apps because Total Commander wasn't working) and I've always used the latest version.
I've just switched my Hermes to another rom.... K's rom V1.21... and I can browse my network shares again (windows and linux) and the rom is the only difference. It's a nice rom too so I'm gonna leave it for now.
An example of my working setup: I have a computer called "mediacentre" with the IP of 192.168.0.234. I can connect over wifi using Total Commander with the addresses of "\\mediacentre" and "mediacentre" but neither "\\192.168.0.234" nor "192.168.0.234" work!! Exactly the same thing with another rom did not work!!
Maybe this is something to do with the network configuration of the base rom from which the cooked rom is built?
It's definitely not a linux/windows/maxtor problem!

I've just installed Total Commander 2.0 (http://www.ghisler.com/pocketpc.htm ) a few days ago and haven't gotten around to using it . It's not a very intuitive app when it comes to making network connections. I also noticed that TC has plugins for other files systems (http://www.ghisler.com/plugins.htm#filesys).
Did you have to use one of the other plugins or any special protocols on the NAS (i.e. VPN , FTP, etc.) ? - Sorry for the multiple questions in detail , but I'm a linux newbie \ : ) .
If I get the figured out, I'll try to publish a detailed "how-to" since I seen the same question w/o solution on other forums.
Thanks-In-Advance
I find TC very easy to use - especially the virtual 2 window mode!!
To connect I just open the \\Plugins folder, choose LAN and can connect with "_Quick open" or by setting up a "<new server>" with the addresses of "\\mediacentre" or "mediacentre" (as per my example below).
I have not had to use any other plugins from the TC site and my NAS is basically a ubuntu (debian) system with a number of samba shares (which are basically the same as shared folders on windows). The shares on my server are viewable by all on my local network so no password is needed to access them although they are "read only". I have a WinXP desktop too with shared folders and I connect to this in exactly the same way.
No joy ......
Just went thru several attempts using Total Commander to connect to the MSS II and still no connection. Just did a search on the forum for "SAMBA" and it seems there are other folks out there in the same boat.
Some possible factors I can this of are :
- security on the NAS Share
- different flavors on linux used on the shares
- the application on WM used to connect (resco, File Explorer, TC, etc)
- some obscure setting on the Router/Hub /Switch
- version of WM (2003, 5, 6 , )
BTW - after installing TC I lost the connection to my Win XP share which used to work via Resco. (arghhhh!) .
Why is this such black magic that only functions under a full moon?
My head is spinning now !
This link looks hopeful :
http://cri.ch/linux/docs/sk0014.html
More trial and error for now ....
Anybody else care to weigh-in with some advice ?
Kaiser + NAS (Linux + Samba) + L26 Diamond V4 = works!
Solution for those using Kaiser (TyTN II):
I just flashed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=395555 (Kaiser Diamond V4), and my Synology DS-207+ (Linux + samba shares) is visible and accessible from every software (Total Commander, Resco, File Explorer).
Previously I used to flash Dutty's ROMs and original ones - they do not work with samba. I wrote to Dutty - hope he'll find how to fix (I love his ROMs).
Good luck! Now I'm able to watch videos on Kaiser from my NAS via WLAN, I'm happy ;-)

Interesting... As far as I can tell, Total Commander, Resco Explorer, File Explor, and the Network Plugin all call the same password manger in WM6 and that manager does not send the passwords in a form that SAMBA understands.
In theory changing the key at HKLM\Comm\SecurityProviders\NTLM\LmCompatibilityLevel to 2 from 3 should do what I need, and enable the Universal to communicate with my SAMBA server. That it doesn't suggest to me that there is a problem with the LM security provider.

OK. The correct answer is here:
Change HKLM\Comm\SecurityProviders\NTLM\LmCompatibilityLevel to 1 from 3, not to 2 (ref: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa922895.aspx and http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa925018.aspx) as "You can also set the LmCompatibilityLevelServer value to 2 or to 3. Both of these specify that the server will only use NTLM v2. Authentication will fail if the client is not capable of NTLM v2 protocol. For more information, see Authentication Services Registry Settings".
And check to make sure HKLM\Comm\Redir\SmbSignatureMode is set to 0 (not recommended 'cos it may cause problems with windows servers), 1 or 2, but not 3 (ref: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa921092.aspx).
And you can try to set HKLM\Comm\Redir\AllowedAuthMethods to 3 to see if it makes any difference. To me, 2 works fine.
No need to modify samba configurations if you are running a recent version of samba (3.0.28 right now). Anyway, you can always try to add "use spnego = no" (maybe "client use spnego = no" or "spnego = no" as stated and/or quoted in other posts/web pages, I'm not sure of it.) to see if it makes any difference in your situation/samba version.
If you have admin privledges on the windows/linux machine, you can install orb on it. I've done that to my xp machine at home and now from anywhere on my ppc I can access anything I want from my home machine... it also checks to see what the files are at home and can sort them into categories like music, documents, videos, etc.
I'm not sure if it will work with orb installed on a pc to look over the network to a NAS, but mine looks through usb to an attached drive.
Worth a shot and a very simple solution to the problem.

Full WM6 or 6.1 on Shift

Everyone,
This is one of my first posts. I have been reading the threads on this and cannot make heads or tails of what's going on. I have a Shift for eval purposes and after playing around with it, I think it's a pretty amazing device. HTC has crippled the phone capability in the US versions because they haven't certified it for voice use with the FCC yet. If we can access "file explorer" and some of the other features of WM6, I think a lot can be done to modify it or even to use it for voice. Has anybody made any headway as far as a new ROM that enables all of this functionality?
No
nobody has yet developed the crack. The reason is because nobody has the machine yet. Can u comment a bit about the battery life. Is it very disappointing?
well, now that several people actually have the device in-hand, could somebody please confirm that the ability to expose full WM6 exists as described by Pawel062:

what about athena projects rom? that rom is actually from shift right?
snapvue is actually a today plugin pretty much. it hides the soft keys and start menu of the original wm6. then from the plugin u have access to messaging, settings, and other basic stuff.
this is ment so u use vista but with only 2hrs max battery on vista many people would like to use the less power hungry wm6. i am working with paul from modaco.com on re enabling the full wm6 by putting a modded dll that will unhide the start menu. after that ull be able to get into file explorer and get a reg editor to re enable the soft keys.
heres the challlenge:
--no usb port like regular htc phones to sync the shift and get the dll on their. only usb host
--no bluetooth in snapvue/wm6 side
--no wifi in snapvue/wm6 side
--no ir in wm6 side
--vista device central doesnt see the wm6 side
--cant save files from email to windows folder
and i cant remember now the other blockades. i will continue working on it though.
Seems like that there is some kind of file transfer, it uses it when you install a certificate in shift control center, but how to crack it open or replicate the process for other files, and then execute the file on snapvue site ....
Think its time for a "taskforce thred" where all info is posted so everyone can work on it.
Sounds a lot more difficult then I first imagined....
(No BT??? OMG! had no idea!)
Sounds like I have to be a bit more patient...
This doesnot sound like it´s gonna be solved in a couple of days....
It´s great that you´re workin on it guys!
greetz,
Pfeffa-rah
thanks Pawel062, I appreciate your efforts in trying to find a way to get this to work!
Just saw if you edit a contact and then try to attach a picture, you can browse the WM6 folders.
Unfortunately you can only see the pictures, because it's using the picture manager from HTC..
Silly thought: The miniUSB connector on the dongle formally is only meant to provide additional power to devices that otherwise would not be detected (External Harddrives etc). Would it be a silly thought to assume that the same miniUSB port could somehow allow us to access the SnapVue part? The miniUSB port is located at the back next to the cable leading back to the Shift.
I hadn't even noticed that.
I just plugged mine in for the first time, the only drivers Vista installs are for a Generic USB Hub and a USB to Ethernet Adaptor. There doesn't seem to be anything else hidden in there.
If anyone needs anything tested on a shift dont hesitate to ask. Full WM6 functionality would be greatly appreciated and would turn snapview from a gimick into a usefull tool.
OK so thanks to Michael who commented on Browsing using Contacts and Pictures, I managed to gain access to the Windows Mobile File Explorer and other software on the device.
First step is to create a new email.
From the menu Insert - Picture.
Using the browse capability go to the Windows folder
Locate Start Menu and press Ctrl C
Browse to Settings
Press Ctrl V
Go to Snapvue homescreen and goto Settings
Start Menu will be visible and you can then access File Explorer etc.
Hope this helps....
Excellent. I have sent myself the executable of PHM.lu's regedit, saved it into my documents, and am now able to access and edit the registry!

Great! Any possibilty to enable blocked things like office or is it not installed?
Also in my limited investigations, I have managed to almost access Windows Vista from the Windows Mobile side.
Using Resco's Explorer with its Network Access functionality, I performed the following.
Under Windows Vista, run the ShagCtrl application.
Install a Certificate, this can be any file you like.
You will see the progress bar appear and drop up and down. If you listen you will hear the sound of a new device being added.
Do NOT click OK when prompted as this will remove the device.
If you load up Device manager, you will see an "NDIS shared Internet connection" (or something similar) appear under network connections.
If you open CMD and run an IPConfig, you will see that this connection has an IP Address of 192.168.160.102 and a gateway and DHCP server of 192.168.160.1.
From the Windows Mobile side, load Resco Explorer and goto Menu - File - Network - Map Drive
In the dialog that appears, you should see Computers near Me (or similar) and under here should be your Vista machine.
If you share a drive, or select the Vista computer and put \c$ on the end, it should try to connect.
This is as far as it gets me so far. Was a late one, but I couldnt get it to actually connect.
So close yet so far.
In Addition, if you try to run a cab file it will error. This is because HTC have remove the Open command file association for Cab files.
Using your favourite WM registry editor goto HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Cabfile\Shell\Open\command\.
Under Default type
wceload.exe "%1" /nodelete
cab files will now install correctly.
Hope this helps...
Hi,
I ama anew user of Shift. I am did not understand clearly what did you mean about full WM6 or 6.1. Knows somebody how can we have a full WM6 on it? Pls help me I really need a full WM6 system also.
Thx.
Ok, so I've accessed the Start menu using Vs1979s instructions, and I've found that Windows Live messenger is on the device and works ok. I'd like to try and install Opera, but I need a registry editor that isn't a CAB file in order to add back in the registry key to support CAB files - can someone point me in the direction of one?
Thanks,
Dave

Laptop + HD bluetooth problem

i have a Toshiba Satellite.. about 1 year long and i put a Kingston bluetooth USB on.. ive used it before with my Sony Ericsson and i had no problem but now that i try to connect with my HD it doesn't work.
my HD thinks it connected but my computer doesn't
i cant send files to the phone or anything at all.
its not even recognized
everything works fine if i use the USB cable the HD brought
do i need to update some kind of drive? or what?
anyone got any ideas?
Windows Bluetooth Protocols
Just an idea, but some phones use File Transfer Protocol on Bluetooth, however Windows Mobile devices use Object Push Protocol, adding this protocol onto your Laptops range of available Bluetooth settings, SHOULD allow you to transfer files between Laptop and Touch HD via Bluetooth. Had a similar problem with my laptop!
Hope this solves your problem!
"Once upon a time" in windows mobile 6 I was able to browse my phone through bluetooth connection.
Now with the Blackstone it appears to be impossible. There is no such option within the bluetooth settings.
i still cant get it to work.. what i did notice is that the Image File Transfer Protocal (for pictures and basic types of files) isn't available on the HD.. maybe thats why it doesn't work.
EDIT: has anyone gotten their phone to work with bluetooth? to send files? like a picture? or a new problem you just got? or a powerpoint? ..
im so lazy to hook up the cable every time.

i can send and receive files to my device and have them stored to my Bluetooth Share folder on my storage card. i exported the registry changes and dll from my Orbit2. you can get the dll file here and the registry changes here. it's probabaly best if you follow my instructions from here. once you've made the changes, soft reset and you should be able to send files to your folder of choice without prompts. there are probably other methods of accomplishing the same task, but this has worked for me since i've had my HD. oh yeah, the disclaimer: you assume all risk for anything that happens as a result fo the import and file copy to your device.
i rather not go through all that.. dont want to mess up anything. leaving it pretty much stock. best way to go. besides adding programs (real ones) haha.. only thing i have is HD Tweak from here.. i dont evne have gyrator.. not really needed. thanks anyway. ill just use the cable.
if you're not an experienced WM user, i can understand not wanting to follow the detailed instructions. they were created for the person who requested the info. really, your not installing software, your copying a (certified windows mobile dll) file to your device and importing a registry setting. it's basically the manual steps a cab file would execute. you copy the dll to your windows folder, use PHM or Resco Registry to import the registry settings, soft reset and then try to send a file to your laptop. that's it.
For me ActiveSync over Bluetooth between the Toshiba with Bluetooth dongle and the HD works out of the box, with standard Vista Bluetooth drivers (not the Toshiba ones). Key was to start the Sync from the HD (after pairing the two devices of course), it would never connect when trying to start the sync from the Desktop. To start Activesync, go to Settings tab in the TF3D UI, and use the first option "Sync Data" (Daten synchronsieren on my German ROM).
ill see what i can do later.. i got finals >< thanks guys

same here.... this method is to transfer files via Bluetooth/OBEX to a folder of your choice without prompts and without having to connect to WDMC or AS...
