Power button stuck!!! Please help!!! - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

The power button on the side of my 8525 is stuck in and cannot be pressed! I cannot turn my phone off. I have tried to pry it very softly but it wont budge. The phone works perfectly, just the button cannot be pressed at all...
What can I do to fix it??? I have tmobile, so would cingular help me at all if I took it to them? Should I try to take it apart? I got the phone last feburary so ive had it for a while. Should I try to contact HTC America to see what they could do???
Thanks in advance for all your help!

PLEASE!!! Does anyone have any suggestions?? My phone hasnt been turned off and i dont know what to do! Is there any way i could assign the power function to another button???
Please help!

Well, the phone should shut down itself after a while (i.e. suspend), go to your Settings -> .. somewhere on the Power / Battery settings. But, before you do that, make sure you do not have your button locked. . or else you will not able to wake your unit up (since you have a dead power button).
Anyway, there is no way of mapping the power button to another button. BUT, there is a software approach. Called ShutDown, (i.e. http://myitforum.com/articles/9/view.asp?id=6766), which seems to able to give you a shutdown thing like Windows. It does cause some problem though (i.e. hanging WM6 phones, in the Start->Programs).. not sure if it will cause problem with yours. But you can always reset your phone anyway (i.e. poke the reset button).
If you are comfy of taking it apart, I think you can do it. I think there are service manual for this. Look for "mikechannon" (a mod here) for his webpage for manuals. Or harrass him by PM him Note your warranty though. Or, you can buy a cheap Cingular PAYG card (if they have it there, I'm not in US) and pretend to be their customers? Try HTC US first? You have to make your own decision.

But seriously, if your lucky it's just the outer plastic switch cover that's stuck and not the micro switch that's jammed.
The manual you'll find in my signature webpage.

HOW? HOW? HOW? You should not know this. You freak.. you keep searching for your own name in the forum, huh? I'll probably have to l33k speak.. harass m|[email protected]

This happened to me a few weeks ago, I dropped it and it landed on the leg of an office chair, on its power button.
First of all I went into settings and told it not to lock the screen and buttons so that I didnt get locked out of my phone.
I then basically, fiddled with it for a while, using various pointy implements to try to free it, but I didnt manage to. After a day or two of normal use (making sure the battery didnt run out!) the phone occasionally asked me if I was sure I wanted to turn it off, just like it does when you press the power button, so the button had come loose a bit, but only to the extent that it occasionally engaged itself. Soon after I could press it in a tiny bit and sometimes it would engage, but it was unreliable. Anyway, it got better the more I pressed it untill now it's as good as new.
My advice to you is just give it as much 'attention' as you can, and it should soon dislodge.

Well, I am still having the problem.. I havent turned off my device in over 13 days and it is killing my battery life... It doesnt even last a day anymore... Does anyone else have a solution? The thing is that the screen flickers on and off like its being pressed when its not... I dont know... I believe that that as something to do with the power decrease...
Can I try to pry it lose??? What exactly is causing it to be pressed??? Can I put in a pay as you go card and have att fix it???
Any advice would help!
thanks!

You got some advice on here. Did you try to follow any of it?

Ive folowed everything! HTC wants $125 to repair my stuck power button. I am not completely comfortable taking it apart, but if i was given pretty decent instructions i could probably attempt it... The power button is not broken, it is just stuck... because when i pry at it, it activates itself...
help!

Does anyone have anything?!?!? it is still broken.. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I've got the same problem, except my phone keeps prompting me every so often if I want to turn off. Generally its just irritating. Every so often it turns off, which is a pain.
Once I get my hands on a screwdriver which fits I'll be firing in to open it up and hopefully fix it. I'll let you know how it goes.

Any new updates??? Please help!

Power button not waking phone up

Every once in a while after not using the phone for a few hours the power button won't wake the phone up and I have to take the battery out or soft reset. Any ideas what is causing this?
Anyone have any ideas?
When I wake my phone up, it seems like it takes two hits of the power button to fully wake it up.
On the first try, I can see the answer and hangup keys light up for a second then go dark. On the second try, the phone wakes up.
Not sure what may be causing this. Can you try to see if hitting the power button a second or a third time will wake it up?

I can hit it 100 times and it won't wake up, needs a soft reset or battery removal to wake up. I've tried it with programs installed and just hard reset it and it's still doing it
my phone has this same issue too. its happened twice since i got my phone a week ago.
i have had the same problem ... let then a week of having the phone and on 2 occasions it has just shut off on me ... i even upgraded to the new rom and that didnt help

It's a bug in HTC's software and they told me the fix will be included with the EVDO Revision A upgrade. Also the default SIP does not stick between soft resets and THAT bug is supposed to be fixed as well.

can you inform which ROMs you used that had this problem and which carrier?
It's not a bug with the rom or the phone specifically. It's issues the phone has with certain software, etc.... I experienced the same problem when installing and running some items. After uninstalling the software the problem went away.
I've experienced this with several different applications that weren't intended for the Mogul but i decided to try out anyways.
My suggestion is to figure out when the problem started and then determine what software you had recently installed. This will most likely solve your problem.
Also, in a previous post someone mentioned that the SIP won't stick after a soft reset. This is true, however you can fix it with a free program on xda's site. Look for SIPChange
Someone posted previously that this happened even after a hard reset, and the only fix was having it exchanged for a different unit.
Sounds to me like at least in that case, it wasn't merely a software issue.
I actually had this happen to me today, but its not as often as some people report it to be. I've owned this phone for over a month, and its happened maybe 2-3 times. A little press on the soft reset button fixes it, and I forget it ever happened!
does this problem happens on WM5 & WM6?
did you solved the problem? i have had the same problem and in my case PhoneAlarm was the reason.

My Wizard is randomly going NUTS - Help needed!!!

Hey all, I don't know what's causing this but since yesterday my Wizard (K-JAM) has been going crazy.
I just plugged it into my USB port a min ago to charge it (not sync) and a whole random bunch of apps opened, including IE where 'hhhhhhhhh' and 'eeeeee' were repeatedly put into the IE search box, as if the buttons were stuck (this'd happen if the keyboard was open or not)
SMS would open too, the phone panel would open and the phone would appear to be dialing random things. Including successfully dialing (by itself) "333".
The hard buttons and keyboard seem to become disabled when this happens too and will randomly start working again.
I'm running Windows Mobile 6.1 TNT Official. Has anyone else experienced this kind of stuff?
This is a real mystery and driving me nuts. Is my phone possessed?! I may try flashing with a different ROM later, although TNT *has* been working ok for the few days I've had it on here.
Ok this is really odd. I've found that when this happens and it calms down a bit (keyboard/buttons work again), I open Word Mobile and try and type.. the letters 'h' and 'e' don't work (the 2 letters that appear randomly when the phone goes crazy). I have no idea why as I can use these letters just fine when the phone's acting normal.
Right now I have Word Mobile open and the phone's typing "yyyyyyyyyyyyyy" by itself. Buttons/keyboard have stopped working but touchscreen is fine.
Gawd. :S
Edit: Wish I knew WTF was causing this. It continues even after a soft reset. This time I've rebooted it, it originally messed about but is now back to normal.
Ok, it now seems I can (temp.?) fix the hardware buttons on the front of the Wizard doing nothing by opening the keyboard and hitting something like the windows key. Then all the front buttons work again.
I notice when the buttons are disabled often hitting the middle button (inside the up/down/left/right) brings up "Align Screen" for who knows what reason.
How annoying. I'm gonna flash another ROM and see if the problems go away. (currently using latest TNT Official)
EDIT: Still some buttons (q, e, i, g, h) are no longer working. What on earth has happened here?
Right, just flashed it back down to T-Mobile 2.26 and the randomness problems seem to have gone away [EDIT: No they haven't] but I still have completly lost the use of q, e, i, g and h. I have no idea how this has happened. Last night I had a low battery (first time) and the phone started going nuts at this point, when it was under 10% charge left.
Since then it's been very random. But I charged it up overnight and the problem hasn't gone away. Some of the random stuff it was doing was typing 'hhhhh' and 'eeeeee' non-stop (2 of the buttons that no longer work) which makes me think a chipset has screwed up in some way. Keyboard backlight is on constantly. It's the sorta thing I'd expect if I dropped it in a sink of water but the phone hasn't been under any sort of shock/pressure/water/whatever since I got it last week!
I'm beyond frustrated. To top it all the MiniSD card I ordered days ago finally arrived today and it's now completly useless.
Dunno what I'm gonna do now. :S
Final Edit: Ok so it looks like it could be something up with the Wizard itself, could anyone confirm?
- The button in the centre of the joypad either 1. Acts as 'Start' or opens 'Align Screen', this is completly random. (sometimes changes on opening/closing the keyboard???)
- Either the joypad works and the Answer/Reject buttons don't or vice versa - this too is completly random.
- The Left / Right softkeys on the KEYBOARD (top left, top right) work randomly. If they are working the keyboard doesn't work, and again VICE VERSA.
- The LEDs on the call reject button / keyboard are on constantly. This only changes for a time if i mash the keyboard.
- The 5 letters mentioned previously don't work unless I mash the keyboard, in which case the Wizard will sometimes take over typing for itself and then I'm able to use the keys afterwards again. (yeah, I understand this makes absolutely no sense!)
- The Wizard will completly spontaniously start opening random stuff and typing as if keys are jammed.
I've flashed to Tmob 2.26, 3.08, WM6.1 (TNT) & WM6.1 (another cook) and have exactly the same problem. This all points towards broken hardware. I should have guessed with the amount of dents, scratches and a broken button that this poor Wizard has been through the mill a few times! Shame it had to use me as its death bed!
If anyone can recommend anything to what it might be and what I could do to fix it then please let me know.
Thanks!
Wow! You're not much for letting other people get a word in edge-wise, are ya?

Make sure you don't have Smartskey installed (look in Windows\Startup and in Program Files). If you do, uninstall it, it's been corrupted somehow.
Otherwise:
Ok, I know I'm starting to sound like a broken record, but I think it's just the age of these phones. They get old, they get dirty. Don't believe me? Take off your battery cover and look at the grime that's gathered at the edges. Imagine what that does to your buttons!
You need to open the case, disassemble the keyboard section (and the faceplate too, for good measure), and thoroughly clean the contacts, the buttons, etc. The further you disassemble, the cleaner you will get it. See this thread for a manual on disassembly/reassembly:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=378764
Use good quality sterile cotton swabs (no dollar store crap for this), and pure (not dyed) isopropyl alcohol. Dab the swab in alcohol, and gently scrub every inch of the contacts, the circuit board faces, and the buttons.
When that's done, wait for it to dry...and I mean as dry as a mummy fart. DRY. Inspect everything carefully, looking for loose cotton threads, debris, and most important, streaks. Streaks mean you just smeared the gunk around without picking it up. If you find cotton or debris, use canned air to remove it. DO NOT USE TWEEZERS OR OTHER METAL IMPLEMENTS TO DO THIS. If you find streaks, go back and clean it again.
Once it is both dry and clean, reassemble it and test it. You should be good to go unless there's something broken.
If neither of these things works, I would strongly urge you to consider committing a violent act on the individual who sold you the phone... you probably won't get your money back, but it might make you feel better.
Cheers, the thing has me at my wits end. Keep having to remind myself it's only a phone
Yeah it's def not Smartskey or a soft problem as I've flashed it a whole bunch of times this afternoon.
From mashing the keyboard and causing it to do different things it looks to be a hardware problem (or full of junk like you say). I grabbed the pdf manual to look through but don't feel too comfortable taking the thing apart just yet.
I just slapped it about a bit as best I could out of frustration and unbelivably it seems to have come back to it's former glory. I'm not gonna get my hopes up and expect it to stay like this though.
Yeah it was an ex-company phone from a company upgrading their stock so no refunds / replacements. I guess if the worst comes to the worst it'll go on ebay as faulty and I'll be without a little gadget I really craved! Back to my £10 Sagem for the time being.
Thanks for the reply.

Hi mate, your problem sounds similar to mine. Especially about the lights (though my green light is broken and only shows occasionally - came like that). You'll probably find that when it's in that state the problems arise.
Mine screwed up again after about an hour of my last post and the keyboard barely works at all now. Mashing it / hitting it / swearing at it isn't doing any good. I've virtually given up.
I'm not sure about a CID re-lock btw, but would Vodafone bother check to see if it was CID locked or not on return?
But hey, it sounds like a hardware malfunction. Good luck with yours & keep us updated if you find any kind of resolution !

Galaxy S4 I545 verizon - Not turning on

Merry Christmas.
My phone was at around 96%. Phone screen was OFF on my desk. Suddenly, phone screen comes ON. I press the power key to turn the phone screen off. It didn't work. I unlocked the phone and kept attempting to turn off the screen. The power key was unresponsive. I attempted to shut down the phone by long-pressing the button. Still no response. Took off the case, took out the battery. Put it back in. The phone vibrated and showed "Samsung" boot logo for about 5 seconds before shutting off while still loading. When plugged into the wall to charge, it shows the charging battery icon with a "refresh" icon inside the battery icon. It also shows for about 5 seconds before disappearing. I can't get it to show up as a USB connected device on my desktop.
What the hell happened? I have so much stuff on this Galaxy S4. I purchased it from Verizon in September 2013. I did NOTHING to it! It was literally sitting on my desk!
Oh and btw it was never rooted or anything. It ran the TouchWiz home and basically everything is unmodified. I just need my pictures back from the internal storage! I only have half my pictures on my micro SD.
Edit: This has been solved. It was the power button stuck in, as mentioned. To fix this, you need to get to the phone's logic board and rip the power button off the board. The metal is easy to bend, just be really careful not to break anything. I carved away the plastic slowly with a flathead. I bought a soldering iron and a desoldering iron, so as soon as my new button arrives in the mail ($6 shipped on ebay), I'll get the rest of the metal off and drop the new button into place.
Sounds like the power button is 'stuck' as pressed in?
Perhaps some dirt or just or something got into it? You can try pull off the cover and clean the outer-casing where the power button is. There are many tutorials on this.
Eg steps 1 to 11 here:
https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Samsung+Galaxy+S4+Display+Assembly+Replacement/16540
I've also seen a solution where they say to hit the phone on the power button on a table gently, and keep doing it harder until the power button becomes unstuck... but that sounds like a stupid idea to me. I would recommend taking off the cover as shown in the guide above and checking for dirt or damage around the power button and on the inside of the case where the power button lies (where the button contact is)
Is there any way I could just get the internal memory?
And for more info, pressing just the volume up key shows the "recovery" text in the top left corner for about 1 second before shutting the whole phone off. Volume down will ask if I'd like to install a custom OS or whatever.

Hi mate,
Then you need to fix that power button, should be fairly easy and cheap...if the phone does not stays on there is nothing you can do to access those files....sorry
Yes, as mentioned, your issue appears to be a stuck or faulty power button.
Opening the phone is quite easy. You just undo 9 screws and use a thin plastic pry tool around the edges to pop it open. This will allow you to take a look... otherwise, take it to a repair shop.

I opened it up and I'm looking around. The power button seems to be on the board with a tight connection. It really doesn't appear to be the power button... Could it be a software glitch?
Edit: Just bought this USB Jig on ebay for like $5.

That is SURE to void your warranty. Don't go messing around with your device's components! The above could be recommended as a last resort if your device is totally bricked to get your data off it. Not sure if the USB jig will help you, as your power button will probably still force your phone off. Let me know, though.
Now that the panel is off and the power button is free and clean, does your phone still turn itself off automatically with the battery inside? I wanted you to open it so that you could see if there are any obstructions on the button, and you can try press it to see if it's stuck (it should depress and you should feel a slight 'click') .
Turn the phone on with a fingertip on the power button. It's a little bit small, but you can do it.
Be careful, as the battery can fall out easy.

It seems like some power-related issue.

Problem with "Knock on"

Last night i left my phone in working condition but today when i woke up in the morning and turned it on, it started to open up apps automatically and began to touch anywhere it want despite where i wanted to touch. I restarted it 2,3 times and it worked fine. Then when i tried to turn it on through Knock on, it wont turn on. It turns off pretty well but dont turn on. I backed up all my data and did a factory reset but i still got that problem. Please help me out with this issue. Is it hardware or software i cant figure it out. I searched online and one of thread mentioned about testing screen so i tested it through QuickMemo and found out that a little strip was unresponsive(maybe this is the reason of Knock on failure). Again i am not sure if its a hardware or software issue. Please tell me if it can be sorted out through software way. Your help is really appreciated !!
P.S. QuickMemo image is also attached below

I wish I could help more, but I'm only guessing. From your Photo, it does appear to be a hardware issue, but if you don't mind going through it all, you might try doing a Hard Reset (AGAIN, sorry..) and see if that fixes it. It's very possible that a Hard Reset will cure the problem. Only thing is you will loose all of your data, so be sure to back it up and restore it.
I know that's a long process, but it would help you figure out if you need to send it in for repair or not. Also, likely LG would have you do the Hard Reset as part of their diagnostics before they had you send it in to them anyways.
You can also use THIS METHOD to return to stock and see if that clears the problem. If you still have that strip that does not respond, then it's likely a hardware issue.

Thanks a lot. I went through diffrent threads and found out that many of LG users had this specific issue and they call it "Ghost Touch". Many of the users recommended their own techniques some of them were really weird. like one guy told to electricate the screen using a little thingi that comes out of a cigarette lighter (i know, weird) but many were claiming that it worked (again, shocked). Some of people told to open up the phone's back and place a two sided tape on LCD connector(yet again many of them claimed that it has worked well for them). But being a technical person i dont believe in these weird and illogical methods. What do u suggest? should i try one of these or not?
P.S. I am from Pakistan and you can't claim warranty to LG from Pakistan so sending my phone to LG for a repair is off the books
another thing.... i am running Lollipop FOTA at the moment. Will the hard reset also change the version to the stock version that came out of box? i.e JB

Both of these MIGHT work. I personally would not shock my phone to try to fix it though. The tape thing might work because over time, the connections inside the phone can become loose. The tape is simply pressing the connections tighter. I have had this issue on laptops, and it might relate to your problem, IF it is a hardware issue.

If you Hard Reset, it will reset to the current version installed on your phone. So, if you've used FOTA to update, you will refresh back to the FOTA version you have updated to, not back to the original stock version when phone was new.

What I'm guessing they mean by the tape thing is finding the spot where the connection is not good, and using a piece of tape to put pressure on the connection when the back is placed back on. I don't have any way of knowing where that spot is. If it were my phone, I'd open it up and start putting light pressure on different spots to see if the screen starts working right. If/When you find the spot, place a small piece of tape that will apply pressure there when the back is placed back.

SCREEN REPLACEMENT PROBLEM

hi there, I just replaced my screen for the umpteenth time but, on this occasion, it hasn't "taken". The old screen is totally obliterated, smashed display, but it still takes power and behaves as it should (lights up on disconnection of usb charger, for example). The new screen? Not so much. It does actually work, it shows the picture fine, but it only shows it for a fraction of a second then blinks off. When I press the power button again it does nothing, as it thinks I'm turning the phone off, then when I press it again the screen comes back on for a half a second or so and same issue. Have checked all connections, all fine, have swapped in the old screen to confirm it behaves as it should, all fine.
I'm wondering, could this be some kind of gpu/driver issue? Or has anyone experienced this before with a replacement screen and it's just a "dud"? Absolute downer as I've been waiting for it for a month or so and literally can't afford to buy another one at the moment, really bad year

I had a similar problem due to display incompatibility.
I have the phone marked FHD-D on the cable and the new display was FHD-A.
Or, the new display is not original...

Thanks for your reply and yeah, I'm figuring this is what is happening. However, the cable/screen are all one piece and were bought together, so is it possible they'd mismatch the cable to the screen themselves? idk, anyway, I've opened a dispute and have now been told that I'm stupid and that I have installed the screen incorrectly and not connected the battery (absolute gibberish).
I made a couple of videos for them, idk, have a look and see what you reckon but, indeed, to me this looks like straight up incompatibility as the screen isn't being driven properly by the phone (and, as you can see, the old busted screen behaves correctly)
Video of old/broken screen showing correct power response and on/off behaviour:

Here is the video of"new" screen which is clearly not correctly supported

Well hopefully I can get a refund for the part and get another. Can't even afford to order another at the moment until I get the refund :/ Lost my business last year due to covid and don't have access to state benefits or the like, so have just been trying to keep the head above water for the last year and a bit, so believe it or not something like this is a big expenditure for me these days :/

The original screen is "Boe" (see screenshot), this can be verified via the "Device Info HW" application.
Too bad the phone won't start and it can't be verified...

Yeah, it's a pain, I guess the display is just not going to work and I'll have to somehow get another - hopefully I can get the refund okay as those videos show it clearly doesn't work! The phone does actually start up, everything is going on fine aside from the screen. As I have to press on/off several times to get the screen to flicker, I don't have time to put in the unlock code and get into any menus, and then when it goes off I'm back to jockeying the button until it lights up again, at which point of course it's returning from a standby state so it's going back to the code input. BAH!
hello how are you 1 month ago I bought the second-hand mate 10 lite with the crashed but functional screen and I decided to buy a screen since the one I brought stopped working the touch screen everything was fine in the installation but the same thing happened to me as you understand normal but the screen does not work when the device is finished charging and putting the pattern turns on the screen and also that when I make a gesture it does not work I have to press a little hard and I realized that the screen came out a slight defect and I cannot request a refund since remove the security seals when installing it in your case if it came out with a major manufacturing defect
Note 2020 just look at the date of your post and still comment hehe greetings from Mexico
