Full screen incoming / outgoing caller ID picture - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

With all the great working being done here on iPhone-inspired applications, is anyone developing a simple app to let Smartphones and PPC phones display a full screen image (drawn from the contact database image) for incoming and outgoing calls and caller ID?

This is a thing that's been talked about for years. MS makes software for PPC's with at least resolutions like 240x240, 240x320 etc. But it just doensn't understand that we want to have a full screen caller ID
There are some solutions, but none of them are really small when it comes to memory consumption, or bloatware
Have a look at PhotoContacts and Inesoft Address Book . The last one works the best for me

Yeah, I've looked at those, and others. In fact, IAStyle (I think that was the one) has royally screwed up my incoming caller screen now so I get lots of misaligned graphics and random pixels during the incoming caller / caller ID display.
Someone should be able to make a simple caller ID display that uses the graphics already stored with the contacts in WM5/6 and displays the graphic full screen. It would be wonderful if the display used XML to control the layout so it was easy to redesign the layout as well.

Have you tried AC's slide to unlock, he has this feature caller ID working. Only problem for me, that is, it is not compatible with AE button plus, the problem being, I can't answer calls. But I have tried it without AE button plus installed on my Wizard and it works great, with a minor hiccup that is, you can only get full resolution Full screen photos if you use photoCM to assign your contacts pictures..
try it...

I'm on a smartphone so slide2unlock isn't going to do much for me I suspect.
Also, there's no reason not to use the contact databse's pics is there?

Are you happy with the PPCPE dailer?

Having had my XDA 2 now for a few weeks, and having finally worked out most of the kinks of the really inadequate bluetooth stack (by installing the widcomm stack) I am now moved to address my other annoyances: the very feature poor phone software.
I expected a very configurable phone, but was very disappointed with the microsoft dailer. The short list of features I find missing are:
No separate ring tones can be assigned to each contact. This could be very usefully, as you would know who is phoning without checking the screen.
No software to keep track of your calls or GPRS allowance. Even my old nokia from 3 years ago could do that.
No way to transfer a call from the handset to a headset. I know you can do it the other way around, why not this way too?
Very little status information on the dailer screen. Why is this, when most cell phone screens look like the status display on a jet?
Anyways, there is alot more, and people may want to add their annoyances. Im really wondering if there is any software that can replace the microsoft Dailer (like Pocketinformant replaces the pocket outlook).
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Surur
Took me a minute to know what you're talking about.
No, I hate the built-in dialer on the Pocket PC.
The author of mobidial (http://www.mobidial.com) told me there will be an XDA II version.. hopefully soon.
-arebelspy
hey,
just a few comments....
re: No separate ring tones can be assigned to each contact
- i beleive the o2 xda site has free software for download; one of which is called powercontacts. i believe it allows you to assign a ringtone to each contact. i tried it when i still had the xda1...never got it to work. so, i downloaded a trial version of ringtonex; it works like a charm and i'm able to assign individual ringtones to any contact i want. i immediately bought the software, i think it was for around 9usd. now that i'm using the xda2; the software still works great. for ringtones what i did was record the voice of my friends, officemates, my wife, and used those wav files for ringtones corresponding to their contacts. it also works in tandem with the photocontacts app in the xda2
re: No way to transfer a call from the handset to a headset
-the xda2 has bluetooth and i use it together with the bt200 headset. incoming and outgoing calls are automatically transferred to the headset.
2 cents worth.
cheers mate
robson
Transferring from phone to headset is a headset dependent thing. My HBH-65 allows me to transfer to phone and back to headset, but my Jabra wouldn't have.
Thx for the great pointers. I am definitely getting the RingtoneX app, and mobidail or something similar, when it comes out.
I just wish that developers would design more for handed use, not using a stylus, especially as bluetooth voicedailing does not work.
About transferring to a headset, I mean after you pick up a call with the XDA, transferring the call to a headset should be possible, but has not worked for me yet.
Another minor peeve, why is the sms option not on the dialler, but on the menu bar, and why is speaker phone also not on the front, but you have to press a key for it. There still needs to be alot of improvement. Hopefully independent programmers will kick in and fix all these deficiencies. It does make you wonder if the developers actually use their own devices or not...

i think it's because that most cell phones screens is their version of the today screen
i most surdenly would not wish such a confusing cluttet messy interface on my worst enemy
(yeah of cause not all cellphones are all that bad some many are)
I dont know. At least they should have the battery status on the screen, and the network logo would not be ammis either (currently its difficult to know when you have no reception, or just no reception)
Alot of the stuff thats currently in the task bar could also be bigger icons on the dailer, and it would also make it look less plain and just incomplete, as if its been thrown together at the last minute.
Surur
well not sure if it's much help but if you install some bar like advanced wisbar on your pda you'll have batt status in the bar both in today and the dialer
suppose this is a pre customised vs. free 3. party customising
some people like to set up their device with personal customising and some people want the place they buy it to handle that
in that way i suppose xda and other such devices are more like computers then std phones are
of cause if one get a xda with all the stuff in the preloaded provider rom they get more of that stuff you want
of cause thats not saying that they get enough
Ive been a user of Icbar for a long time, but as notifications is so important on a PPCPE device, and its not supported, I am not able to use it anymore. This is unfortuanate, as I enjoyed knowing what my battary status is all the time.

If you want to use your finger to dial contacts try Fingerclix by imaginet software. I used it on my Samsung I700 and now my I-Mate and it works just fine.

This is brilliant. It would be even better if it could use the phone key insteadof loosing my contacts button. Any idea how to do htis.

HTC Caller ID Sucks

Is it only me, or does the inbuilt Caller ID app that HTC provides suck rather large rocks?
My ROM is pretty recent (unlocked 1.12 WWE), and the Caller ID says it is version 1.20 (Build 18567), but I have the following problems with it:
- Very slow to load my 200 contacts
- Very difficult to find a contact. Click one of the short-cut letter combinations at the top, and it seems to go to a random contact
- Type in a letter/combination, and it finds that letter/combination in every contact (ie RE gives me fREd), rather than using that as the first two letters in a name
- Overall very slow and sluggish to respond to anything. It would be quicker to call Directory Enquiries and then type the letters in using my toes
- Unless I start it (and its running in the background), I don't get any of the PhotoID on ringing functionality
- Setting the font size of the incoming call has no effect - the name still comes up in microscopically small font.
Any suggestions? Shall I unmap the contacts button and use the default Microsoft contacts manager (without any of the cool pictures/ringtones functionality), or is there an update or an alternative?
Thanks, guys
Alex
I've some issues with it as well.
When I try to change the storage path for photoid files, my CallerID keeps crashing.
Is there a registry location where I can change this? I've tried finding it in the registry but I failed at it
I gave up on the HTC version it really is slow, bug ridden and generally crap.
Try Photo contacts instead, its fast, easy to set-up and doesn't alter contacts when you attach pictures as instead of being attached they are simply referenced by the name you store the contact under.
E.g. If your contact is Joe Bloggs then the contact picture is bloggs, joe and it will display full screen too!!!!!
It's slow and buggy memory hug and has ****ty functionality. Don't install this (ie. by preventing from customization) unless you are planning to use ArcSoft MMS 2.5.
I agree its slow but never found a bug with it (until now with the GPRS problem).
Its the best photo contacts software I have seen for the imate and good for when you're in the car with its full screen id and large display of contacts to dial.
Unless you know of another program which is better?
I did just find this, it's pretty cool, I like the fat-finger only use....

So I thought this was pretty interesting. I installed this software today and overall I really like it until the first time I try to sync and I get the old "Unable to connect..." error message. This is the first time I have gotten this message in over a month since doing the downgrade but it is also the first time since then I have installed a prgram that was some sort of contact/caller ID related software.
I uninstalled this program and it seems the error message has gone away..... wierd
nothing better than this : http://www.pocketx.net/products/photocontactspro_ppc/#photocallerid
Tried every program that is related to photo contact and photo dialing. And I came to one conclusion, they all suck.
There is really no program that doesn't slow your ppc down or give an error of somekind...

I don't know to uninstall it but there is a way not to install it, but you have to do a hard reset. See instructions here http://pocketpcdubai.infopop.cc/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/582600994/m/237102159/r/237102159#237102159

Why should you use PhotoContacts if you use ArcSoft MMS 2.5?
I also don't like the PhotoContacts prog but don't want to spoil anything else.
Thanks

1. delete the IA_CID_Startup shortcut file from the \windows\startup directory
2. delete the IA_CID_Startup from the \windows dir.
I think the Caller ID function of this program is decent, but there is no way to backup/restore your photo/ringtone assignments which really sucks. So after every hard reset you have to do it all over again.....
After I came to this forum and so tired of the htc caller ID I decided to give a try to photo contact as bruxelles5 suggested, and I have to confess that it did impressed me. It was been working perfectly, photos stored in sd card so after hard reset I don't have to set it up again, full screen image and picture arrangement. Very good *****
PS: I got rid of caller ID with anansky method and got 27 mgs store!
Photo Contacts bug?
Does anyone else have a bug in Photo Contacts Pro like me: I have to pick up the phone useing touchsceen button otherwise (with hardware button) both me and caller(!!!) hear nasty "fragmented" end of ringtone wich rings (ca 1 sec) AFTER pressing the button
It doesn't seem to depend on location of ringtones folder (main memory, storage card)...
BTW, all the ringtones are in wma-format. Should I try another format?
Any thoughts?
PS Sorry for my English
SOLVED: Mort, thank you very much for your MortRing!!!
I have this problem as well with the ring tone blasting into the caller's ears when using the hardware button to answer. Do you mind sharing what you did to solve that?
How can you choose which of the caller ID apps opens when a call comes in?

Just try this s/w http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=20711&highlight=mortring
I'm happy with MortRing as I don't need Photo ID on my phone but I like to assign individual ringtones very much
It is unbelievable that HTC ships products with this crap. Even a cheap cellphone has better Caller ID functionality. Not only is the program very slow when editing, you can't backup/restore your ringtone/photo assignments. Caller ID doesn't work 50% of the time, and after a lot of troubleshooting, I have not reached a firm conclusion as to why. The only credible explanation I found was in the XDA-developers forum and it simply seems that unless you have plenty of free resourses the program won't work. And still, I have an upgraded Jam (128 MB).
This is very very sad. I miss the solid performance of my iPaq.

O2 sms plus on jasjar, is it possible?

hi guys,
i have the O2 sms plus working fine on my wizard, but lately i had a problem which prevented me from using my wizard, it has a speaker problem. now i'm using my jasjar and when i wanted to use o2 sms plus on it, it shows a very small font size because of the VGA screen.
i was wondering, is there a version of this app compatible with the vga screen on my jasjar?
i've done some search on the web but no luck in finding any.
thanks in advance for the help guys.
What is sms plus?
Yes it is possible, but as you said the font is small...
I could be way off track here, but is SMS Plus the o2 app that enahnces SMS communications via setting it up similar to a chat type setup. So all your SMSes are logged under the one contact ect. Im sure I read about it in the reviews of the o2 Atom.
In any case, can you send me or post the SMS Plus app
1. I would like to try it
2. I have had success in the past getting around a few customisation things, I might be able to fix this one up for you.
Cheers.
Well I found the app already.
Nice app indeed, but also indeedy about the text.
Resource Hacker can modify the font sizes etc, and can take it out of Hires Awareness mode, however, when resource hacker recompiles the exe file it looses its ability for it to run on the Pocket PC.
So essentially if there is a basic resource hacker for the pocket PC where in business, or perhaps a hex editor might do the trick since it might be less invasive.
Where did you found it?
i don't remember where i got it from, or if it's available in this forum, but anyway here it is.
When I do a reply to a sms I can't see what I'm trying to type. Does anyone else have this problem?
Fish
Yes thats the problem we all face. Small fonts and inproportionate dialogues in the application.
Like I said a resource hacker can fix it, so if you know of any WM5 or just PDA resource hackers, let me know and ill get back on it
The small font I didn't find too annoying. It's just not actually being able to reply to any texts because I couldn't tell if I was actually inputting anything. Hopefully the WM5 gods on the board will sort it out. I can't wait for a proper sms chat style app to be working. It's one of the things I miss from my Treo.

well, this happens because the original app was developed for the wizard which has a 320X240 screen. on the jasjar the screen as you know is bigger with a 640X480 (VGA).
that's why you don't see the text when replying to your sms.
hopfully someone can modify the font size in the app so it will be more compatible with the vga screen, i really like this app and when i got it on my kjam i didn't use the default messaging app at all and this was my default.
>BUMP<
please, someone get this to work on the XV6700... the only problem is that it wont recognize the phone as being on!!!! :?: :!:
Anybody get this to work on a 6700?
This now works on the 6700:
http://www.pdaphonehome.com/forums/showthread.php?t=70428
Anybody know how to make it the default text messenger? Currently, a new message results in a notification baloon, which, when you click "view" continues to open pocket outlook instead of 02sms plus. You then have to manually run 02sms plus to use it.
so does this app really work like d default SMS chat software on d treo650 & 600 where all incoming & outgoing messages r grouped per name(sender/receiver)?
ive tried it b4 on my htc univ in true/real VGA mode using ozVGA. i had no issues w/ font being too small. its just that d SMS chat grouping didnt work like that in d treos.
did palm/palmOS patent that or is it just hard 2 implement on WM/PPC phones?

Assigning ringtones to different callers and groups?

Thats a feature I am also looking for - but no luck so far. All the different programs that I found can do is:
1. Change ringtone per person/group
2. Full Screen Picture ID of caller
But none allows me to change the SMS tone per person/group. I am going to write to the authors of PhotoContacts PRO if they will add this feature to their program.
i just had a google and it appears 'Ringo mobile' may do it. I'm going to try it now and i'll report back.

Cool! This sounds promising - let us know what you found out.
Couldn't wait - I gave it a try myself 8) So far it seems to work pretty well. At least I could test the ringtone part - all my friends are still sleeping so it'll be a while for my SMS Test
Nice thing is that I switched off the ringtone manager in Photocontacts PRO and Ringo takes that part now and Photocontacts shows the caller full screen picture. But I guess I will be getting rid of Photocontacts once Ringo performs solid and without problems, the tone is more important than a picture to me - or I need a lightweight fullscreen picture id program...
i gave it a shot too, i havent had a sms off anyone yet either but seemed to be able to set the tones per contact ok. My only worry is intergrating it with phonealarm, as that app takes over the tones too. I've set the default sms tone to 'system' in pA, hopefully that will let ringo take over.
So far I am really amazed by this Ringo Mobile. It works ( for ringtones ) like a charm. Hopefully my friends will be up soon so I can test out the SMS Part of it.
Now I really want to get rid of PhotoContacts PRO, since its such a memory monster - do you know of any other fullscreen picture ID caller software? AFAIR there is a freeware but I am not sure of its name
i just got my friend to text me and it works perfectly
Good news!
I got some mini-bad news though - there is a bug in Ringo - when a person calls you are not able to use the volume slider to turn of the ringtone. This bug is already reported in the yahoo group of ringo.
So hopefully this will be fixed soon since I don't want to hit the IGNORE button ( since the person calling then knows I ignored them ).
The official statement regarding this problem:
This is a side effect of Ringo Mobile volume being the system volume
not the ringer volume (although we respect the ringer volume at the
point of the notification). However we do intend to add this ringer
mute facility in a future release.

Just found out about another Ringtone/SMS Tone Tool - its really tiny and FREEWARE!
MortRING
http://www.sto-helit.de/modules/wmpdownloads/singlefile.php?cid=8&lid=66
Haven't tried it yet - but it does sound like it does the same thing as Ringo - but for free.
MortRing works great on my SPV M3000 Wish that I could hide the icon on the traybar though
I also hope that there will be support for sounds on SD-Card instead of on the device. That way I will be able to attach a SMS/ring tone to every contact and not just a few 8)

Unfortunately, MortRING has issues with WM 5.0. On most WM 5.0 devices (including my US T-Mobile MDA), it does not recognize the caller ID and reports all calls as "unknown caller". I spent about 3 weeks researching this, and Ringo is the best that I have found (best = works great, and not overly expensive).
agree with the previous post...when i upgraded my xda2 to wm2005 it had some issues with mortring (i used the .97 version). sometimes the caller id would malfunction...at times the phone would ring but there was no sound...doing a soft reset would solve the problem but eventually the bugs would come back.
now i'm using a mio a701 and still mortring has some issues....

Video Caller ID - Request

After I searched everywhere on the web I can't find that kind of software. On my old Symbian Nokia I had this software, and I can't understand why there is not for PPCs.
I don't know if somebody could make that kind of software, but It would be really cool.

yup.... CPU will be completely used up. I don't think this'll be possible.
I'm pretty sure that windows mobile already does this out of the box, maybe only certain formats. I kind of remember doing it once but you could only use the audio on the video and no mp3, so it was dumb.

The idea of a video sounds coool.... what if have a specific gif file (like a ringing phone) appear on S2U when someone calls (in addition to the contact picture)... especially with the new gif feature A_C just addded? how does that sound? if interesting probably someone should suggest it to A_C...
