Using xplode's cabs as the extended rom - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 ROM Development

FIXED! NOW IT SHOULD WORK!
I hope this can help some of you.
To use xplode's cabs as the extended rom first you need to create a folder on your SD card named ExtROM
Then you need to extract all files from the cabs.rar to this folder (ExtROM on your SD card). You will need winrar or 7zip to extract the files.
Now go to ExtROM folder and rename the file SAMPLE_CFG.TXT to CFG.TXT. You can edit this file to customize it to your needs.
The final part is to download this file: extromtools.rar and extract the file autorun.exe and OemExtDll.dll to the ExtROM folder on your SD card.
Now you need to hardreset your device or simply execute CheckAutorun.exe which is located on your windows folder.
More info here:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BA_ERK_Understand
Execution of the Extended ROM
* CheckAutorun.exe (which is started from \Windows\Startup\CheckAutorun.lnk) executes the AutoRun.exe
* AutoRun.exe is found in the \Extended_Rom Folder
* AutoRun.exe reads the \Extended_Rom\Config.txt and executes the commnands in that file
* The pointer for AutoRun.exe HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\AutoRun is set to \Extended_ROM\AutoRun
* The pointer for Config.txt HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\AutoRunCFG is set to \Extended_ROM\AutoRunCFG
* The Touch screen is disabled by the first command (TPDisable.exe)in the Config.txt
* The Touch screen is enabled by the 2nd to last command (TPEnable.exe)in the Config.txt
* The last Command of the config.txt (RST) performs a soft reset

I have created cabs which replace the xml files. The one of the xml files i have merged with the Arcsoft MMS cab and there are two other cabs for enable MMS into messaging app and for enable the windows update. also i have created from the other xml cab which does this in vista:
also it adds the T-Mobile as manifacturer and MDAIII as model in properties of it.
i will test the cabs and post them, have to do a hard reset in order to test them in action

Excellent, looking forward to your new cab. I also need MMS but it didn't work for me.

also by the way you can always use this for loading xml configurations

Tried it, it just gives me an error when I run it and click on "click me", I get an windows error.

Guide to Cooking Universal Extended Rom with FILES

Hello,
I have read that some people have been having a bit of trouble with customising their extended rom on the Universal. So here is my attempt at creating a guide, as a way of saying THANKS to all who helped me in these forums to create my own customised ROM's on the blue angel and my current EXEC.
First thanks mainly to Buzz for the Ext Rom Unlocker and also to BeyondTheTech for the Disable Security Cab.
Also thanks to all other members who contributed their trials and files in the thread.
IMPORTANT - DO A BACKUP BEFORE DOING THIS AS A HARD RESET IS REQUIRED!!!!
Here Goes:
This is how i did it:
1. I created a folder on the desktop called Exec, and inside i created 2 folders called Orig Rom and Cooked Rom
2. I then downloaded the following 3 files and placed them into the Exec folder.
3. i copied the unlock policies and the ext rom unlocker onto sd card and copied them to the phone.
4. i ran the unlock policies cab first then the ext rom unlocker cab
5. under programs i clicked on ext rom unlocker to execute the file
6. it then said succesful and reboot to finsh
7. once rebooted install total commander from below.
8. i then ran total commander and typed in /extended_rom (note underscore) and it displayed the contents of the exteneded rom that originally came with the phone.
9. selected it all and copied the contents to SD card.
10. if you connect your phone directly to pc then you can copy the contents directly to the 'orig rom' folder you created earlier, or use card reader to do same.
11. either way you have the contents of the ext rom on the pc. i then deleted the contents of the Extended_Rom on the phone.
12. the next steps are done on the pc.
13. copy the autorun.exe and the config.txt file from the 'orig rom' folder to the 'cooked rom' folder.
14. copy all the CAB files that you want to be installed upon hard reset into the cooked rom folder aswell.
15. copy the disable security.cab file into the 'cooked rom' folder aswell
16. you will need to rename the cab files that you want installing in the following format:
Default_Unsigned_xxxxxx.cab where xxxxxx is the name of the file
17. if the cab files have long names then just rename them!
18. if you wanted to keep some of the original cabs from your extended rom then copy these into the 'cooked' folder aswell but leave their naming system alone ie:
Signed_UNI_Remove_BatteryIcon.sa.CAB
19. once these have been named as above open the config.txt file
20. it needs to be prepared into the following format :
LOCK:Enabled
CAB: \Extended_ROM\Default_Signed_DisableSecurity.CAB
CAB: \Extended_ROM\Default_Unsigned_tcpmp.arm_ce3.cab
CAB: \Extended_ROM\Signed_SSD_BTUR_Patch_For_BT_Cannot_Initial.sa.CAB
CAB: \Extended_ROM\Default_Unsigned_Porta-Pinball.CAB
RST: RESET
this is an extract from my config.txt file
21. i used the existing file and amended the entries, add/deleted some of the entries.
22. note the space between Cab: \ this is important.
23. also note that the first file that i wanted to install was the disablesecurity.cab file, without this the other 'personal' cabs will not install.
24. so once you have edited and saved your config.txt files making sure all spelling is correct (also an important thing otherwise the files dont install) and no warnings are issued either! you will have in your 'cooked rom' folder:
autorun.exe
config.txt
and several cab files
25. select all the files and then 'right click' on properties.
26. select the 'read-only' option and ok
27. i found that after the first install some of the cab files delete themselves! this prevents that from happening.
28. connect your phone to the pc
29. using active-sync Explore device and navigate to the Extended_Rom folder
30. copy all the contents of your 'cooked rom' folder into the Extended_Rom folder
31. once completed, disconnect the phone and perform a hard reset.
32. after you have aligned screen and done the start-up routine it will start installing your personallised cab files.!!
33. You should now have an Exec, customised with your own extended rom and as a bonus a complete back-up on your pc.
34. if ever you upgrade the phone rom/radio etc, all the software you need and the perosnlaised rom is ready to go.
if i have missed a step plz post back and i will edit my posts and put in there.
I cannot stress how important it is that you make a backup first before doing this as you will lose everything on the phone.
Bye for now!!!

only one question as i have the jasjar and i-mate rom on it
i do not have the config.txt file
how do i tell the device to install my personal/third party cab files
thanx in advance
mail attachments
Thanks for the guide, however when i use total commander, extended rom is shown with the same symbol as storage card and I cannot get the mail programme to save attachments to the real storage card as the universal thinks the extended rom is the storage card.
How can the properties of the extended rom be changed so it does not appear to be a storage card ?
Thanks

I just renamed the required cab file by adding "Default_" to it. That did it.
Thanks
But I have been through the thread numerous time.
The mail programme thinks the extended rom is the storage card.
The thread has a fix to hide the extended rom so the mail programme now saves attachements onto the real storage card.
It just seems a shame to have gone to all the trouble to unlock and make visisble the extended rom, just to hide it again so the mail programme can save onto the real storage card.
Am I missing something. Simple guidance PLEASE.

When the hard reset is done the whole point is for the Extended Rom to be hidden again. This ensures that at any point in the future if a hard-reset is required then the phone is setup agian as you want it.
At the moment the Extended_rom partitrion cannot be used as a storage space , and i believe Buzz is working on that.
So my guide illustrates deleting existing rom, and replacing with personalised rom and then hiding it agian.
Above this thread is a link to Buzz's small tutorial to alllow attachemnts to be saved back to storage card instead of the Extended Rom for those who want to leave it Un-Hid.
Regarding those without a config.txt file then renaming everything to Default_xxxxx.cab does the trick.
thanks
This is a GREAT thread. Hats off to you.
Personally, I think I'm going to add the T-Mobile USA Internet Settings cab to "cooked" stuff (I'm in the US).
Does anyone have a cab that will set up the gmail pop settings (w/ generic un/pass of course)? Lazy, yes, but I'm just trying to make any refresh that I would ever need to do that much simpler
i have another question as we have a lot of good registry tweaks....
is it really that hard to create cab files for those registry settings and just throw those in the extRom
regards
krassen

Instruction on how to generate working .reg files on WM5 ?

Hello,
can anyone tell me if there a good instruction somewhere about producing an executable .reg file for the WM5 platform (Qtek 9000 PPC as well as Qtek 8300 Smartphone) ?
It should contain modifications to the registry which should be applied upon exectuting this file.
(With thge help of a second such file I'd like to reset the initial reg values back.)
Thanks in advance.
well
just look inside a .reg file with notepad.
example:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.2bp]
"Content Type"="image/bmp"
"Default"="bmpimage"
"PerceivedType"="image"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.3gp]
"Default"="3gpfile"
that's it...
im sure u understood what should be done...
To make it executable you need to write a custom app or import the reg settings into a cab and load the cab.
V
How do i make a .reg file delete a value in the registry ??
I think you insert a - before the key
I'll have to google to confirm, but I'm cooking right now

Yes, just this would be my prime question:
Is there any documentation on how to make it executable by "transforming it into a cab file" ?

Create CAB File that does NOT allow uninstalling

Hi guys,
I use WinCE CAB Manager v1.1 for creating CAB files.
The only problem is that there is no option here like "Allow Uninstall: TRUE/FALSE" (like in v2.0).
I would like that some of the CAB files that I created do NOT show up in "Remove Programs".
Is there something like a standard INF file that I can use for this option, so that with every CAB that I am going to create I 1st import the .inf file (that sets uninstalling to False) and then add my files/registry settings and things like that.
If this is possible, can someone provide me with something like this?
Thanks and regards,
Molski
As far as I know there is no such option in the INF, but the app that installs the cabs (wceload.exe) has the '/nouinstall' command line parameter.

So adding: "wceload.exe "%1" /nouninstall" to the registry would solve my problem.
But when I do this, every CAB file I install cannot be uninstalled.
I would like to set nouinstall per CAB file, so one CAB file can be uninstalled and another one cannot.
Regards,
Molski
Why do you want to do this?
If I installed something that later could not be removed - I'd be VERY pissed off.

Hi molski
If you remove the registry entry in HKLM\security\appinstall for the named apps they wont show in the remove program list. You could make a cab file to do this after installing the other cabs, or try including this in the apps cabs - I only know how to do this with xml. If you need help give us a shout.

I have posted you a cab - it appears the best fix. I doubt if including the reg tweak in the 2 cabs would work as the reg values are added after the install. Install my cab after yours and it will do a fix - i have left the name of the fix cab blank so it does not appear in the uninstall programs list.
rename zip to cab
@molski...
What are those cab files for? if those CAB files are only for registry manipulation (meaning no files would be dumped to th device) then CAB Provisioning will be the best, it doesn't show on the Remove Programs.. Please tell if that's what you are looking for. Goodluck!
Here are the 2 files
Here are the 2 tweak files, they are created with WinCE CAB Manager v1.1
I would like that these 2 files cannot be uninstalled after they are installed by the Extended Rom.
And please...can you guys be sure that after adding the "nouninstall" option to these files I still can edit them with WinCE CAB Manager v1.1 (because I noticed that WinCE CAB v1.1 cannot open every CAB file, especially files that are created with Visual Studio or a newer version of WinCE CAB Manager).
Really thanks a lot guys!
Regards,
Molski
p.s. Some of the tweaks are in both files in case people want to manually install one of the files, but for installing via the Ext. Rom I want to make sure that they are not able to uninstall!
p.s.2 These are the tweaks that are in the files right now:
The file: Molski.Biz Performance Registry Tweaks
• Increase FileSystem cache
• Increase FileSystem filter cache
• Increase font cache
• Disable window animations
• Disable menu animations
• Enable FileSystem cache
• Enable ClearType
• Enable ClearType in Landscape mode
• Change the thickness of scrollbars to 9
• Change the length of scrollbar arrow buttons to 9
• Enable 802.11g 54Mbps
• Set IE Mobile Zoom Settings to "normal"
• Move "IE Temporary Internet Files" to 'Storage Card' ( \Storage Card\IE Mobile\ )
• Move "IE History" to 'Storage Card' ( \Storage Card\IE Mobile\ )
• Move "IE Cookies" to 'Storage Card' ( \Storage Card\IE Mobile\ )
• Move "IE Cache" to 'Storage Card' ( \Storage Card\IE Mobile\ )
• Enable CAPS Lock indicator
The file: Molski.Biz Customizing Tweaks
• Don't delete CAB files after installing
• Turns SMS Delivery on
• Install Wireless today plug-in
• Enable receiving of files over BlueTooth/IrDA
• Add time sync page to Phone Settings
• Add a 'Disconnect' button (and Timer) to the "GPRS Balloon Tip"
• Disables different GPRS/EDGE indicator icon
• Show All Day Event and tomorrow appointments on the Today Screen
• Workaround to avoid GPRS connections conflict with phone calls
• Enable DTMF Support
• Always show the clock in the taskbar
I've edited the files so that they are uninstallable.
Don't know if they will open inn 1.1
But If the cab files only contain reg entries the solution da_mayhem suggested is a better alternative.

I just opened and edited them with Cab Manager 2.0
The Registry CSP is documented at MSDN: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d...en-us/mobilesdk5/html/wce51grfregistrycsp.asp
I've attached a example and the only thing you need to do is to edit the _setup.xml file and run runme.bat to generate the cab file.
Easy as .... dell..?

Installing CAB files.

how do I install a CAB file directly to the phone?
just copy the cab file to ur Storage card through a memory reader. then start the CAB file from File Explorer
OR
Connect the Phone by its USB Connection. and then copy the file to any folder on device memory then choose the CAB file from the file explorer.
Easy Enjoy
Is there a setting to keep the cab, now it deletes it after isntalling.

Not sure on you're specific phone, but with the Hermes/Kaiser there is a settings somewhere NOT to delete the file when installed.
I have a folder on the MicroSD card called "Install" that has all the CABs to get it working after a hard reset. The only thing I don't have are my phone contacts and the like
One day I'll get there though....
Thinking about it there could be a field in one of the many tweaking tools for the UI
wm6 does not delete cabs after install. this happened to me on wm5. don't know how to disable that feature

usually activesync saves your contacts & when u do HR just name ur ppc back to the last name u used, then contacts should be added back to your contact list on the ppc.
another thing is to use pim backup software like pim backup which is free here: (can save emails/sms/mms as well!)

When I extract a cab file (and put it on my xda ii - wm6.1 rom) it is just an .xml file. When I open it on my laptop or xda ii it just comes up with html.
How do I get the cab to install?
If a cab is deleted after installtion, you can use Schap's Advance Config Tool to disable that.

You've 'extracted' too far. Programs like WinZip and WinRar by default list 'cab' files as archives. There is nowt wrong with this, as they are in a way. Except in this instance you don't want to see them as such.
Copy the .cab files to your PDA and install from there. Once the .cab files are on your PDA they are treated like an executable.
Got it

[Q] First ROM with osKitchen

I'm starting to learn how to cook my first HD2 ROM using osKitchen Zero. I imported the 3.14 WWE official ROM to it (build 21913). I just want to make sure that I'm on the right track so I'm going to make a list of the changes I've made within the kitchen and ask a few questions if that's possible?
SYS Packages
I removed all the components labelled as "Useless" as I figured I'd try to save some space. They are:
Autoupdate
Bth_HID
Enterprise
IPSECVPN
Sample Music
SqlCeMobile
WWAN
Can I get rid of WelcomeCentre if I don't need "Help"?
EXT Packages Exclutions:
JETCET Print (had an error when I imported the ROM so I left it unchecked.
GPS Copilot (I've got TomTom so I won't need this).
Questions:
How should I import XDA_UC into the ROM? I tried to import the EXT from here but kept getting an error.
I added the Cookie Home Tab 2.0 cab to EXT Packages and made sure it was selected but there is no mention of it in the ROM. If I install it manually after a flash then it doesn't say it has been installed already. How do I import it so it is already installed?
Thanks for all you help in advance, I've always appreciated the work you guys so and it's only now I'm finding out how much time and effort is required
I use a couple of the 'useless' SYS packages and since there is a lot of storage space on the Leo I leave all the SYS packages in. I get the same error with JetPrint - its a line in the registry settings that has an extra '\'. I edited the app.reg file and removed the extra '\' and OSKitchen stops complaining about it. I also remove Copilot and include the TomTom .cab in the kitchen so it autoinstalls on first boot.
Not sure about XDA_UC as I don't use it - I just add to the config.txt file (via the OSKitchen 'add2config.txt' method) and autoinstall some .cabs at 1st boot.

Could you give me a quick demo on how to create and use the add2config.txt file? Is it just a list of cab file locations? How do you import the .txt file into oskitchen?
In my kitchen I created a folder called 'common' in the \sources\devices folder. In this I have the path \EXT Packages\Common Packages\. In here I place any packages that I use in different devices. OSKitchen displays EXT Packages in the Common folder for different devices - i.e. I have a Blackstone and a Leo and can see these packages when cooking for either.
In here I have a TomTomVGA CAB package. The folder is called 'TomTomVGA CAB', inside this are two files - 'app.reg' and 'add2config.txt' plus a folder called 'files' containing the .cab file. The 'add2config.txt' file is just a text file and contains the text 'CAB: \WINDOWS\NavigatorVGA.cab'. This gets added to the 'config.txt' file that is read and the items listed are executed on 1st boot'
You can only include .CAB files that don't ask for parameters or try to reboot the device. Where to install is ignored as far as I can tell - i.e. the TomTomVGA.cab if installed manually would ask where to install - either device or storage card and you don't see this when its added to the config.txt file. I used to have an Office Communicator Mobile 2007 R2 EXT package but the latest .CAB asks to reboot at the end of the install and this no longer works. I just install this manually after a re-flash.
Hope that makes sense?

That helped a lot. Thanks very much!
Have a look here, I have built an os kitchen all ready. You can select both 6.5 and 6.5.5 roms. I also have xda_uc as an option in the build. The thread is here:
