Yes. The cab file is like the "setup.exe" on a PC and is safe to delete after installation.

Or better yet, what I do is keep all the latest versions of my favorite software in a folder on my storage card in case I need to reinstall or hard reboot or something.

.exe to .cab

hey guys...
ok ive had few problems actually experimenting too many things kicks off the rom OBVIOUSLY...i would like to do something like this....
1.my xda II hard resets it self for obvious reasons (too many experiments)
2.there are too many programs installed on my xda II which i use most of the time, few of them are cab so its easy for me to copy them to storage card and install but many others are .exe so everytime a hard reset i have to connect the xda II to the cradle and run the software from the computer....
what i would like to do is just convert or extract .cab from .exe so that everytime i dont have to go through the same thing....this means i can also copy all my softwares as backup on my xda II storage
P.S : there are only few .exe softwares that allow me to extract .cab from it by right clicking and going to winzip option or winrar .....most of them are to be run all over again.
please help
thanks alot in advance
if it's exe which you run from the pc and it using activesync to install the program in most cases all you need to do is to chage the extention from exe to zip and copy out the cab from inside the zip file
otherwise you need an cab maker program search should give you a bunch

An alternative method (slightly long winded but reliable)...
Install the product on the device then install it again, when the "Reinstall Y/N?" dialog appears on the device perform a soft reset. If installing to Storage or Storage Card, the CAB will be in the root of that device, if installing to Main Memory you will find it in \windows\appmgr\install

Yes, you have to wait for the CAB file to be copied over to teh device and then it says "Reinstall Y/N?" on the device, then you do the soft reset.
If you are going to use CAB files I would strongly recommend you grab a copy of CABInst as well, it is excellent (and free).
MMm
This work in my Imate Jam
i don't know

installing programs w/o activesync

HI.. my xda2 bottom outlet/socket/chargersocket is broken. and the repair store said they cant fix it anymore because the connector w/ the mainboard is also broken.
i have 2003SE and thank goodness i stil have a backup of my xda in spritebackup. so everytime my xda reformats, i just restore it.
but my problem is, i only have few programs/games installed. and i want to install more. can i still install more? what do i have to do? can i still install wm2005?
thanks..
you cant install a new rom without activesync i believe
but you can install programs
just copy the cab files to a sd card and run them from there
most activesync install programs from windows can be renamed to zip and opend and then you can copy out the cab files

Installing CAB files.

how do I install a CAB file directly to the phone?
just copy the cab file to ur Storage card through a memory reader. then start the CAB file from File Explorer
OR
Connect the Phone by its USB Connection. and then copy the file to any folder on device memory then choose the CAB file from the file explorer.
Easy Enjoy
Is there a setting to keep the cab, now it deletes it after isntalling.

Not sure on you're specific phone, but with the Hermes/Kaiser there is a settings somewhere NOT to delete the file when installed.
I have a folder on the MicroSD card called "Install" that has all the CABs to get it working after a hard reset. The only thing I don't have are my phone contacts and the like
One day I'll get there though....
Thinking about it there could be a field in one of the many tweaking tools for the UI
wm6 does not delete cabs after install. this happened to me on wm5. don't know how to disable that feature

usually activesync saves your contacts & when u do HR just name ur ppc back to the last name u used, then contacts should be added back to your contact list on the ppc.
another thing is to use pim backup software like pim backup which is free here: (can save emails/sms/mms as well!)

When I extract a cab file (and put it on my xda ii - wm6.1 rom) it is just an .xml file. When I open it on my laptop or xda ii it just comes up with html.
How do I get the cab to install?
If a cab is deleted after installtion, you can use Schap's Advance Config Tool to disable that.

You've 'extracted' too far. Programs like WinZip and WinRar by default list 'cab' files as archives. There is nowt wrong with this, as they are in a way. Except in this instance you don't want to see them as such.
Copy the .cab files to your PDA and install from there. Once the .cab files are on your PDA they are treated like an executable.
Got it

cab installation - can i put it on my storage card?

I just tried to install a cab file and it puts it on my device without asking me where to put it. Is there a way to force it to install on my storage card?
thanks in advance

What operating system are you using? Because if you're using wm5 or wm6, it gives you the option on installation directory with the exception of certain few files (system files I guess) that installs directly onto your device.

Some CAB files a restricted to be installed only on the device.
In some cases it is neccassary to limit the installation routine to the device, e.g. system files or system tools.
There is no way in altering that, but you can always install the cab file,
then copy the installed files to your storage card and uninstall the files on your device.
Yeah, usually if it doesnt ask you where you want to put it, then it HAS to go on the device for stablility reasons. Usually....
Normally it always asks me where to install a cab, but some files will always install on the device for system and stability reasons, Progs that are ran constantly are better off installed on device memory
sometimes it's on autorun and autoinstalls to the device..
if you are downloading+installing via your phone.. try using opera.. it should give you the option to save the file.. then save it and run the cab.
if it doesn't do that. then that sucks
