Cutsom ROMs? - Mogul, XV6800 General

Since HTC/Sprint released a new ROM - how long will it be before somebody releases a custom/cooked/optimized ROM? Has there been any work done in that direction yet?

Progress is being made! I wish I could help, but I'm not that good at cooking sweet ROMs. I'll just be patient and wait for the good stuff to come. It's only a matter of time

Hehe, he all have to start somewhere right?
An easy way to explain it is if you think of your device as a regular home computer. A "ROM" would be a piece of software that includes the operating system, drivers, and can include added applications. Basic, but do you follow?

kinda like emulators and roms? like a N64 emulator and it plays N64 ROMS.. ROMS are the games..? the games (APPS((roms) and the cell(titan((emulator))

Well, no, not exactly. That would imply that your device is somehow emulating an OS within an existing OS.
The ROM is "package of sotware", including a "native" Windows CE OS and drivers/software for your specific device.
Without a ROM, your phone would be inoperable. It would be like having a computer with an empty hard drive.

ohhh ok gotcha so why are people tryin to change up the rom? what are they tryin to do cuz the only thing i plan on doin when i get the mogul is getin the Iphone theme lol but if there addin cool stuff i would def be interested

That's a question with about a hundred different answers.
Primarily, people change around or "cook" ROMs to make their device better. This can include, making it run faster, lighter (less bloatware), more stable, etc.
Also, for some devices that can support it, stepping up the OS is another reason. For example, you may buy a phone that was purchased running Windows Mobile 5. But after some time Windows Mobile 6 was released on other, similar phones. So, some developers or "chefs" on this site take basically an image of the updated OS from one phone, tweaks it, adds some things, takes away others, and voila! A phone with an updated OS, running better than ever.

sweet something to look forward to especially since im puttin the iphone theme on my phone and thats takes alot of memory to run

WM 6.1 ROM

Exist any WM6.1 ROM for HTC Dream ? Please dont ask me why I need this.
Thanks.
No, not going to happen, been asked many, many, many times already.
why not ? where is the problem to cook non official ROM ?
For one, its a waste of a perfectly good phone to put that CRAP on it. If you want a piece of crap, buy a piece of crap.
Second, the required drivers simply don't exist.
What do you men crap ? OK, the second explanation is better.
I think lbcoder got it right. windows mobile IS Junk. I have a Kaiser in addition to the G1. The Kaiser has great hardware minus the KB, small screen, and quiet speaker, but it has a horrific OS e.g. It's slow, locks up, restarts itself for no reason.
The G1 however has a great OS that needs little or no changing at all, but dumbed down hardware.

Bottom line is if you want WinMo, buy a WinMo phone. Most of the hackers working on HTC Dream are working on Android.
Oh yeah and use the search.

I concur. I couldn't imagine going to winmo after being blessed with android.
he he he he....
I guess we want what we don't have? Many folk are working on porting Android to our WM devices.... Maybe it's just the challenge of it all?

Now that I think about it; I sure wouldn't mind the ability to dual boot. Not even sure why but maybe just for that hell of it.
Makes no sense
I had the T-mobile Dash before the G1 and wound up giving the dash to my wife. I was helping her learn to use it and only then did I realise how goofy the setup of it all is. They say the beauty of it is that it tries to emulate the Windows experience, but if my desktop worked like that...I'ld have a mac.

Best post in this thread. Completely true and funny as hell.
That being said I'm STILL excited to see what WinMo 7 brings to the table.

Little suggestion

Hi,
I don't know if it'll be possible but
Why all the coockers don't make a "JF updater" like ?
An apk able to track new version in the build directly ?
This way people who like haykuro, thedude, jf or cyanogen would stay up-to-date.
Just a suggestion...
I think that's an awesome idea, personally. I'm farely new to all this but I can already tell, that keeping up with all these versions is pretty time consuming. But i'm liking it so far..

It would require that the makers of JF Updater release their source code and that the cooks know how to program and change the code to search and find the files. And they have to have a centralized place where their files come from... But it's definitively doable.

Coming from another HTC phone, keeping up with the different versions for the G1 is almost TOO easy. We need more cooks. I'd cook for it, if I could have some guidance getting started... I've taught people to cook for all kinds of HTC phones, but it was always Windows Mobile phones. With this phone, I don't feel like searching and searching and searching again from scratch to learn at a snails's pace. Especially since I'm so busy with work, school and life now a days. And I still cook for the Herald. I currently have about 3 different ROM in the works (6.1, 6.1 stripped to the bone and 6.5)
Wait... I'm talking too much.

I'm currently back on the HTC ROM but I would assume you can still run any of the home replacements from the market (or just the default android one) on MoDaCo.

It's really a preference thing, there's no harm in installing any one of them and seeing if you like'em. Sense really is the better fit for me.
Some of the major ones are:
- OpenHome
- aHome
-dxTop
- PandaHome
...that's just off the top of my head some of the ones I've tried. They each have some cool and unique things about them.
Once i figure what can me skinned and how i will be making themes. Not sure if i will post any, as i must have made at least 100 themes for S2U2 for personal use when i had my WinMo phones. If i did do one to post it would more than likely be a Danbo (Danboard) theme.
I just discovered that little guy and i already outfitted my chompSMS with several wallpapers of him.

aHome Lite made my Hero so laggy i could hardly use it. It took me like 10 minutes just to get it uninstalled.
Also, when i was searching for OpenHome i couldnt find the actual program, only themes. Anyone know the official app name?
lol if you figure out how to make a theme you should defiently make me one

I didn't have much trouble with aHome, odd.
Any home replacement will be difficult to find on the market if there's a bunch of themes with the name in it sadly.
I almost forgot a few more too:
- Freshface
- GDE (though I don't know if this one is out yet)
As for OpenHome, fire up that barcode scanner and go here:
http://www.androidtapp.com/open-home/ It has QR codes to scan and will take you straight to the market app.
which one do you think looks the best? and is the fastest

I used to have a Diamond and even made a few ROMs using some of the great kitchens available. It would be awesome if there were some kind of kitchen for the Hero. Hell, I might even give it a try then...just don't tell my wife, she thinks I quit cooking.

There is a kitchen, its called Android SDK and you can use it with eclipse. all you need to do is go grab the source from htc and compile it the way you want to and load it up with eclipse. or the android emulator. there is other steps but thats what google is for. i am working on my own rom right now. cant wait till its done. i am wondering how fast a bone stock rom would run.
I would be ur number one fan for a bone stock Android with hero support. I'd even go as far as to say it would be the base most custom roms are based off of.
I'm not a programmer but if u go through with this is there any way to twist cryogen's work into it? He gets great reviews and the update utility is pretty pimp

Alright!

uh oh... im getting bored with the hero

so im starting to get bored with the device now. i really hope the official 2.1 update comes out soon so we can get some fully working roms.
any recommendations guys to keep my hero fresh?
What is this, a phone or an arcade? So a fully working ROM will keep you entertained for what, a few weeks until Google decides to bring out Android 3.0? And you know your device is not gonna support it. Wanna keep it fresh? Dont use it as much.

AOSP 1.6 with MetaMorph
Its not like you have millions of ROMs to choose from... theres only a few, some work completely, some work to a point. Check the wiki and ROM pages.

yeah that's what annoys me. why does the hero gsm have soo many more options, themes and roms? makes no sense to me. it seems every new phone i move to has serious limitations.
GSM Hero has been out longer than CDMA Hero, almost every version of Android is from a GSM phone so porting sometimes is easier.

Start tinkering. It's one thing to flash other people's ROMs and hacks, it's quite another to actually get your hands dirty and learn the internal workings of the OS and the features you like.
That should keep you busy for a while
Ain't no thang
I'm getting bored too... Especially those lonely nights that I pass locked up in my dungeon playing Warhammer by myself.. I make up scenarios where my army is a constant battle to find the perfect phone in the land of Phandora.
I'd give it shot...Meaning making my own rom but I have little time as it is to pick up another hobby..
I was getting bored also until I started following Darchstar's Roms. I am really excited about his 2.1 aosp rom Its a fresh feeling after leaving sense. Give it a shot.
who cares if you're bored? If you don't like it get another phone or learn to hack.
Starting learning to do dev work. This forum is for sharing of information and knowledge of CDMA Hero.
Not how bored you are.
If you're bored, get an iPhone.
You'll come crawling back in at least 48 hours...
+1 to trying darchstar's 2.1 AOSP. It's my favorite ROM right now, especially after removing some stuff I don't want. You can always start working out if you're bored too... try P90X.

its not so much he was being an ass (was it a little harsh yes) but I mean I kinda agree with what everyone is saying learn to do the stuff. I mean people are complaing that there arent enough roms to choose from so start making them. if I had the time right now to actually learn how to cook I would but I just dont have the time. So I wait paciently for the devs to do there voodoo.
okay guys, i was just sorta bored yesterday. didn't mean to cause a ruckus, ill probably keep myself entertained when a fully working 2.1 rom comes out. and to the poster who said this section is only for development, your wrong, this is the hero general section as well.

waiting patiently is boring.....and bored does not mean he isn't busy. I work 12 hrs a day 7 days a week and always bored but always busy. to the OP once the US gets a decent Winmo handset ill be going back. the only problem is the whole windows 7 series wont be able to compete with android out the door. so it will have to be a winmo 6.5 device for me.

Doing cool things with our ancient phone

Hi all,
Personally I still love my G1. It is the 1st Android phone so historically something that is interesting on its own.
I assume most of the G1 owners on this forum are having the same geekish interests as me and I was wondering what you are doing with the device that you concider 'cool' and can impress fellow geeks
Some things I think are impressive:
1. Having a rooted device with a custom very stable and fast Gingerbread firmware (ezgingerbread)
2. The droid2600 and Frodo C64 emulators that run great on the G1 with its keyboard.
3. Haven't done this myself yet, but seeing videos of debian run on the G1 was pretty impressive.
4. Eventhough it is probably not ready for daily use but having ICS on the G1 is amazing.
My G1 is running debian for a while now. But it mostly sits in drawer now, I just bring myself to sell it. No matter how much my wife nags at me.

Running a customized rom you created yourself does belong in the 'wish I could say that' category.
Compiling programs from source does seem to be possible for the lesser educated with the scriptset smitna has created. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1444792
Not as cool as creating your own rom, but you have to start somewhere
I been using it mainly to try roms and stuff,
but every time a friend lost or have no phone, until they get a proper.
I give it to them to use it
and to try to convert them to android
so I use it for educational porposes
Im using frayo too (thanks )

What do you mean?
I am really honestly using Frayo....
Froyobylaszlo is /the/ best G1 ROM and I use my mod for the (few) features it adds
Did I say I used that script?
Well...no, I didn't
And I can compile a ROM on my own from source thank you very much.
I just don't really see the need anymore since froyobylaszlo is as good as it gets
And instead of working my way up from aosp, learning along the way since I don't know a lot, I decided to just mod in features I like
And no I didn't use some scripts or rom kitchen
I tried using an apk compiler and a theme kitchen thing to fix certain problems, but then I decided against it...
Also, as of now I'm stopping working on my ROM and MOD and am gonna go for some pure PC development to work on my skills
I'm not too sure what you were trying to say but that's my response
If I misunderstood you, sorry
Edit: I think I did....now I'm debating wheter I should delete the above....
Sorry
Just ignore it all...I though you were saying that I shouldn't advertise here (I'm not btw I'm actually using it to post even)
And I thought you said I used that script and didn't do anything
Well, if you want to jumpstart into rom development with modding,, just open up the rom with winrar/7zip and start looking around
And at the google source website you can find how to compile a rom
The second option may require some programming skills

Sorry bout that...http://forums.androidcentral.com/hacking/6037-general-rom-faq.html
This is very useful
Go to "building a rom"
Idk if the link works, its been strange for me, so just scroll down to it
Whenever you edit a rom, you have to sign it...
That link has the files and directions
Also,
I've just had fun experimenting with my G1. I didn't root it myself, but I have learned a lot since I got it. I ran through about 10 or 15 different roms until I found one that I like personally (Ginger yoshi) and customized it the way I wanted. I think the coolest thing that I did on it running a SNES emulator (although I only did it once because of ridiculous lag). I started toying around with DOS box but that didn't go anywhere. I wasn't able to do much with it because it is my primary phone and it got extremely annoying to have to fix it every time I messed something up.
Anyway, it was tons of fun... then it broke :'( And now I'm getting my friend to give me his for free! and the fun will continue.
