Dopod S1 (htc touch) - Touch GSM General

Hi
i know there are already some post about this but im really lost
Whay is the difference between the one in HK and china mainland?
The wifi is software disable or really not exist on chinese one?
thanks

up.........................

Dopod S1 / Htc Touch
All factory authorized cell phones sold in China do not have Wifi enabled.
Dopod S1 does not have Wifi capability. It comes with CHS installed.
Htc Touch sold in H.K. has Wifi capability. It comes with CHT installed
Offical Htc Touch sold in H.K. is CHT version. You may get an English version (uk ROM).
For those who are not experts in Chinese, there are two major written Chinese systems, CHT and CHS. China use CHS, H.K. and Taiwan use CHT.
Most Chinese OS phones will DISPLAY either CHT or CHS and with the corresponding Chinese input system but can display SMS in English, CHT and CHS. All Chinese OS will display English material with no problem because all Chinese OS's are built from English OS's.
For those who want a Chinese OS phone and run English programs, just buy a Chinese phone of your choice and there is no issue.
For those who want an English OS but want to Read/Write Chinese of CHT or CHS, you have to install external Chinese OS and input softwares. CE-Star, Monster Chinese or just a Chinese display fonts and there are a few choices of Chinese input software.
For those who bought a Htc Touch with CHT in Hong Kong, you can change it to English OS if that is what you want. Otherwise just skip this section. Step1, CID unlock the phone. You may pay someone on-line to do it. Price I paid was US$41, that is 20 pounds or 28 eur or you may wait till someone provides a free service or program. Step2, download the Dopod WWE ROM from this forum, a small homework to do. Step3 is to install ActiveSync 4.5 on your Windows XP machine and connect your phone with a USB cable. Make sure the machines can see each other, Guest relationship is fine. Step4 is just to run the Dopod WWE ROM program, follow the screen instructions till you click the final Update button. Step5 is go and get a cup of cofee, if you don't like cofee, tea or water is OK. Just drink whatever you got and wait. Don't pull the cable or power off the machine. You will get enough time to finish your cofee or tea before the screen tells you everything is done. You may skip step 5 if you just like to stare at the screens and pray. Step6 is disconnects the machines and hard reset it one more time for good luck by pressing both left and right buttons and poke its ass. Screen will display a message to ask you to confirm your intention. Press the center button to confirm.
Now, you have an English OS machine. You may need to enter your name in ower's information and proceed to install whichever Chinese software package that you like.
For those who just want to have Chinese display, just install the minimum and not a full blown package.
Yes, Elf, Touch or S1 whatever it is called has very limited storage memory. 15 Mega Bytes less than its sibblings. After the installation of Chinese OS system with some nice Chinese display fonts and Chinese input system, you don't have much storage memory left to install other applications.
On the other hand, you may wonder, why should they want to sell you a perfect machine?
Just slightly better than the existing models but never be perfect is the moto........ and there is no perfect!!!

so if y buy english version or chinese version..already unlock or not??can we use that phone in another country??i still confuse here...CID unlock what its means??
is it like iphone lock by the at&t so we can use another simcard or what?
chinese input need a lot of space in memory..so i think better buy chinese version that already install CE-star.

oky thanks
mean if i want wifi i need buy the htc not the dopod... hk is little far from me

I think he basically told you in his original message.
You need to buy the English version and install a chinese package such as CE-STAR. This will let you read and write messages in Simplified and Traditional (you select which to use yourself).
CHT = Chinese Traditional
CHS = Chinese Simplified

@xufuchang
Out of 42 posts you made in this forum, you have no less than 38 posts is asking questions on what version of Htc Touch or Dopod S1 or whether to buy it in Hong Kong. It does not sound like you live in Hong Kong nor you are native Chinese of either Chinese system. You don't have to so agonizing on your choice of just a cell phone. If you made a mistake, so what, friends in this forum will help you. It is a hot item, if you don't like it you can re-sell it easily. This forum has enough information to help you to make the decision. If you want to know all the details and charateristics of this phone before you can make up your mind, I suggest you just wait a couple of months and I am sure there will be a version of Elf that will fit all your requirement made by one of the manufacturer. Today, for all I know, not all countries carries Touch or S1. Regarding to your latest question on CID lock, I am sure not too many people know how that is done but only know what it does to the user.
CID locked phone means you cannot change its OS. If it is CHT, CHS, or Eng interface language, it stays that way. You have to get it CID unlock, (don't ask how again), to change the ROM's basic language.
I stand for correction from more experience forum members.
SIM locked phone means you can only use the SIM card provided from your original phone service provider. In most of those cases, you bought the phone with heavy discount or even free with a one or two years service contract.
Phones from authorized dealer are CID locked because manufacturer warrantees. All service provider phones sold in U.S. are also SIM locked. Nearly all phones sold in China are not SIM locked that is part of a reason why phones are more expensive in China because most are not subsidized by phone service providers.
So, ask yourself what you want this phone for. If you concern about travelling and need to go to Japan and use the same phone, then you need a 3G phone. Touch won't work in Japan. If you just want to use it in Indonesia, you have to know your own country. I can tell you this much, I cannot send Chinese SMS from a U.S. phone to China. I have to use a China phone to do that and pay the roaming charge from China to USA and USA to China.
As far as Wifi question goes, not everyone care about it the same way. Most people want to have it but hardly use it. I am one of those people. Wifi burns power and surfing with a tiny screen just beyond my eyes comfort zone.
Either you buy the Touch or S1 you will enjoy it. As I said, re-selling it won't be a problem if you dislike it.

I am surprise you saw it for RMB 3,500. In Shanghai, Dopod S1 is sold for 4,480 from authorized dealers, that is with warrantee. I expect somewhere over 4K can get one. Htc Touch is sold for 3,680 in H.K. and lowest 3,580 couple weeks ago. Price dropped??

Can some Titan cooks please look at this?

Hi, I'm a Japanese.
I don't know what proper manner here is, so I'm sorry for the intrusion, and I'm sorry for making this post.
A little information... I have some trouble with English, but it's not bad. My wife is no good though. So, instead of sending E-Mail and SMS in English or roma-ji Japanese on our phones, naturally, we want to use Japanese.
This should be no problem with the WM phones, since I have heard this is possible now that you have "rom cooking" etc.
We liked the Verizon Wireless HTC XV6800 ("Mogul" if Sprint) so we bought two XV6800 on Verizon because Sprint is no good.
Anyway, like I said, with mine it is no problem to just simply use English, but naturally I want to read Japanese website/etc. and converse with my wife. I read that I can get several options for read/write Japanese, but I think the best thing for both of us is to somehow get Japanese OS locale of WM or something.
If I have a PDA device or phone from Japan with WM6 or WM6.1 on it, is there anyway to RIP the ROM from the davice and f or someone who is good experienced cook please use the JP localization information inside the ROM to make English ROM from Titan/XV6800/Mogul into Japanese with MS JP IME too?
Thank you for your attention.

Seeking advice! Japanese Softbank X01HT, WM5 --> WM6. Japanese input is a must.

I currently live in Japan and own a Hermes Softbank X01HT.
Rom Version: 1.33.761.5
Rom Date: 11/10/2006
Radio Version: 1.14.01.10
Protocol Version: 32.50.7018.00H
I bought it in August, and was disappointed with the sluggishness of WM5 from the very beginning. I spent weeks trying to find a Japanese WM6 rom, but only the various European ones had been released so I decided to wait a while. I recently noticed that the newer model is out over here (the Toshiba X01T I think) and it has WM6 on it, so I thought that maybe Softbank had released an upgrade for current X01HT owners. Obviously not the case.
So I spent hours yesterday and today searching through 100s of pages of forum posts, trying to take in all the information I could before posting. From what I have read, the best ROMs available seem to be the cooked ones, and interest me most because of comments like "this ROM is really fast!!" However, they are always based on the English, or some other non-japanese rom. Japanese input is a must for me, so I cant just switch to an english rom and call it day. I can read Japanese, so I dont necessarily need the OS in english, but as a native english speaker, I wouldnt mind. It seems I have 2 options.
1. Stick with the lame WM5, and install the english MUI by Asukal. This gives me english menu, folders, etc, but doesnt solve the issue of having a sluggish OS. So this isnt really a fix for me at all.
2. Upgrade to a cooked english Rom (such as the really nice looking Schaps_WM6Pro_Hermes_4.30_WWE_Full.exe) and then try to get the LetsJapan06 and IME31J_QVGA by Asukal working. (It seems that in doing that, I lose the ability to write in kanji characters on the touchscreen, which is a huge loss for me, but I guess I could give it up if it meant I could have a much faster WM6 running on my phone)
My biggest concern with switching to the cooked rom, besides the obvious warranty voiding, is the ability to re-setup the settings (account and connection) with Softbank. All I could find in my forum searching were things about some prepaid softbank thing you could setup. I have a 2 year contract with softbank, so i cant just switch to some other plan. Is this what the LetsJapan06 takes care of?
I am hoping someone can give me a detailed (or at least to the point) response on what my options actually are. Am I screwed in dealing with a lame WM5 for the next year and half? Or can I actually upgrade to a nice ROM, official or cooked, and still have Japanese input and no issues with my Softbank account/connection.
I hope that in getting some helpful responses, this post will give some answers to others out there like me who have spent hours reading through posts about the great european cooked roms, but cant seem to find much information on japanese (asian) versions. Maybe there are Japanese sites out there like this one, with cooked roms based on the Japanese OS rom, but hey, my Japanese isnt that good!
Thanks to all who actually spent the time reading this massive post. I'll be checking back frequently.

I'm using 'Effy' by Time Space System. It may be one of your solutions though you should pay for it
Please take a look http://www.timespace21.com
Free Japanese Input
Try this, works fine for me. And it is free.
http://ookii.org/software/japaneseinput/
Thanks for the info on Japanese Input systems. I personally use EBPocket on my phone, but im sure the Japanese Input software is compatible with it just as with Pocket Dictionary. (Anyone have any opinions about whether "Japanese Input" is better/worse than Asukal's IME?)
Hopefully someone can still address my bigger concerns. Am I going to have problems connecting to the Softbank service if I switch to an English Rom? If so, does Asukal's "LetsJapan06" fix this? I have read that it "localizes" the OS, but I didnt come across many details as to what that actually means.
There aren't many Japanese ROMs available, at least on this site, so switching back to WM5 could be a bit difficult. Upgrading to WM6 is almost a one way street, so I dont want to attempt it until I am absolutely sure I wont have any issues connecting to the softbank service.
This is for you.

I see light at the end of the tunnel!
That may just be the answer to my prayers!
I've downloaded the exe, but havent had time to mess with it yet. The download from the rapidshare server took a really long time. I did search around a bit to see if there was a newer version than the 4.00 roms(a japanese version of the newest 4.30 roms) but i didnt come across one.
If i install the bootloader, and then the ROM, my phone should work fine with the softbank service correct? no need for letsjapan06 or any japanese input system.
I still have to download and install the bootloader, which apparently may involve some SIM and/or CID (or some acronym(s) i cant remember at the moment) unlocking. I will need to look through the hermes wiki again.
As for the radio version, it seems like most people running the japanese rom are still using 1.14.01.10. Is there a reason for this? Why not run the newer radio versions?
coolboyboy, are you personally using this rom, that you can give me an opinion on it? Or were you just nice enough to find that for me? (if so, is there someone out there who can give me an opinion on it?)
yes, I am currently using this rom, anything is configured for Softbank. you can read the following pages to get more idea how to upgrade it. Please remember to install the IPL V7 first and super CID your device.

im using schaps 4.30 rom and have no problem inputing kanji from the touchscreen.
Have you set your keyboard to japanese in the advanced configuration?
do that and use Asukal Lets Japan No,5 and Ask IME_31J
I hate to be persistent, but I still owe about $500 on my phone. Cant afford a brick
To HungryHippo:
I am still running the original (Japanese) factory WM5 Rom, so I cant really answer your question about changing my keyboard. However, Ive just mainly been worried about having problems connecting to Softbank when running an English ROM, because I saw all the posts about the flat-rate plan for softbank. I figured that there must be some kinda problems after flashing a cooked Rom. However, I see that you are located in Osaka and are running the 4.3 schaps English Rom, so I guess there are no problems? Or are there problems initially, and thats what LetsJapan05/06 is for?
To coolboyboy (or HungryHippo or anyone else who knows the answer):
You said "anything is configured for softbank" Do you mean that even the hermes running on a a non-Japanese Rom connects up with softbank without any problems or add-ons right from the start?
almost everything you need to know (from my own experience)
Mate I have been using WM6 (various cooked versions, all in English) since a week after I originally got my Softbank (Post-April) phone. I am living in Japan and have it configured for Japanese input, MMS, etc, and all works well.
First flash your favorite rom. What I did was to get the original Japanese wm5 rom from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=285183
Then unpack it with winrar or something (using windows xp) and rename the rom file (or move it somewhere else). replace it with your favorite wm6 rom (rom only, not radio!) and flash your device. make sure you have activesync installed first and your device is connected.
Now install the following to make give you Japanese input/localisation/keyboard mapping/softbank connection etc.
Note: all of the following get installed on your device, not on external memory.
get hold of: IME_311_QVGA: http://asukal.net/blog/?p=96
(to give you Japanese input, including writing on the screen)
and LetsJapanNo6: http://asukal.net/blog/?p=364 (which localizes your pda to Japan).
Install both of these and soft-reset.
As for softbank internet settings, go to this page:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=298031&highlight=softbank+connection
Follow the instructions and install.
For MMS: get mmslite775 (post 31) from the following link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=325285&page=4
Note before installing MMSlite, get rid of anything arcsoft from the registry (using the hopefully built in registry editor of your new wm6 rom).
Kill the following key: hkey_local_machine/software/arcsoft
THEN install msslite.
For keyboard, go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=315998&highlight=softbank
There you go man! All should work. Now, I take no responsibility for the above, and of course invite you to do some reading, especially on the rom flashing part. Note, you can't unlock your X01ht, so don't even bother! You will just "brick" it.
P.S I am currently using the excellent K's Rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=350695
samurai-me san's cooked roms are awesome and fast and also contain numerous Japanese carrier related apps that you may need being in Japan. I'm currently using Shogun Climax V3... no worries either about mapping keyboards or installing language packs or mms apps etc.

In terms of softbank internet settings, I suggest HTC network wizard. I am using it and very satified.
If you need only MMS, you do not need to install HTC network wizard or something like that.
MMS lite has its own softbank connection settings.
Yeah, except those are the old settings and you can't access the "all you can eat internet" softbank package with them. (supposing you sign up for it). Of course, you can still use the settings I linked to for normal access as well... Anyway, it is probably better to avoid using old settings if possible.

This is the way to go!
I started with Asukal's Japanese to English but not all the features of the phone were working. What I really needed was an english phone with support for Japanese text and still connect to the softbank system and its' features.
After having my phone for only 3 days, I nervously took a chance to the point of no return. I then loaded Schap's 4.30 plus the ROM patch. Total English phone. Not returning was fine by me with all the features of Schap's 4.30. Only problems were the problem, video and MMS issues with Softbank. 3GPandorablackdailpad solved the video issue.(waiting for Schap's patch for this bug)
For all the features of my X01HT to work completely this is what I added.
--Lets Japan No5
--Ask IME 31J
--MMSlite
--Transcribe Build 17743 (Sweeeeeet)
All this by reading the posts, losing a lil sleep and seriously test all the features of my phone to make sure things worked.
Everything is working and loaded without noooo problems.
btw, make sure you put you keyboard layout to english. If the layout is in Japanese or else when you go to advanced settings or other system files it will appear in Japanese text.
Xbow ROM for X01HT?
I am living in London and have installed the Xbow WM6.1 ROM in Japanese onto an X01HT for a Japanese friend here, and it seems to be working pretty well. I am curious why noone seemed to mention it in this thread, and am wondering if anyone has compared it to Japanese WM6.1 ROM Samurai-CLIMAX by Samurai-me mentioned here. More info on Xbow here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=302785.
In the meantime, I am going to read this thread to see how I can get Japanese input on my Athena so that I can use EBPocket.

Hi, all
My Hermes' touch screen is dead. I returned it to softbank to get it fixed, but it was sent back to me from the manufacturer. The manufacturer report says that it is because I changed the ROM. Yes I did. You can read part of history of ROMs I ever tried.
Now, I need to reinstall the original WM5 Japanese version as I got it for the first time. I tried to find the ROM in the CD but there is nothing except ms office.
Does anyone have WM5 Japanese version, so I can download it and install it to my hermes?
I heard it that I have to modified the nbh file since I installed HardSPL already? How to modify nbh file?
Thanks in advance..

Changing Language Qesutions

I am looking to purchase the HTC HD. Being that I live in Canada there are no too many ways of getting this phone ( that i know of anyways). I have found a site that sells it for what i believe is to be a reasonable price. The only problem is that it is a french version. I was wondering if i could change the language to english? i saw that there was a rom or something in another section of this forum but being as i have no technical knowledge of any of this i would like to make sure i can change it before i make this purcahse. Another question i have is if i am able to change the language, will the device work perfectly as if it were an english deivce to begin with or could there be some bugs or problems and is this an easy process to do? I'd appreciate any help Thanks. This is the link to the site http://www.expansys.ca/p.aspx?i=173661.
Anyone able to help?
I would need that info too.
The only difference is that I would like to purchase the Touch HD in Italy and then change the language to English.
A WindowsMobile device does not offer the option of changing the language on the go, like you know it from standard mobile phones. The ROM (operating system) includes one language, so in order to change it one needs to change the ROM. But you will loose your warranty in the process. But each HTC distributor on a country level also stocks the English (called WWE) version for each device, the key is to get your shop to order it for you. In Canada, if there is an official French version, there must also be an English one.

Chinese Read/Write for X1

Guys,
Do you know where I can download a copy of the cracked CE Star or Chinese Input Program for X1?
Is there a way to just display/read Chinese characters in documents, web browser and messages?
I don't care about input, just want to read chinese messages I receive from time to time.

New guy here........just ordered my X1 here in SOCAL from Sony and should be have it by the end of the month.....
I also need the option to read and input chinese for my phone......but would still like to keep the OS in english.....will I be able to do this when I install CE Star?
Guys,
You can try to download from the below link :
http://www.pda4x.com/read.php?tid=84058&keyword=ce-star
problem with CE star and those third party Native lang input solution is that they break some of the default/factory settings such as symbol/ascent key, word completion, etc. In the case of CE star, it also creates abit of unstability to the system, at least for its earlier version.
if you are like me, who do not use Chinese input 98% of your time, then maybe a workaround solution like "Multi Lang editor" would be useful.
the hk version X1 is bundled CE-Star, it works fine and support Chinese UI display
Search CE START 2.8 R3 on WWW.XUNLEI.COM
I have posted a link for the crack version of CE-Star Ver 2.8 R3C already and I have installed successfully on my X1.
Friends, here is NOT the place to post or publish crack software, so please be respect in this forums.
BTW, I brought X1 at HK and bundle with CE-Star, works extremely good in my X1 and even can support Chinese menu. So, buy a licenced CE-Star if you'd like to read/write chinese.
Hi, sorry but could you please kindly teach me on how to install the multi lang editor? Where can I get the software?
Actually previously I installed a language patch for WM5 which worked successfully, but in the end my messenger and hotmail are unable to log in. So, just wondering if installing this will also bring problem to your x1?

Hi, I recently bought the X1 and also installed CE-Star (legal copy), now, my google map menu somehow changes to Chinese.. How do you set it back to English? I just want to use CE-Star for SMS only..
I did not auto load CE-Star at start up...
Pls advise
You should be able to change the language settings for menus etc look for 语言 and then 英文 or 英语 or even English.
do you feel lagging after you install CE-Star? I feel lagging after i install CE-Star

Blame stupid Google map for not giving option to choose language but detect it based on regional setting (What if a foreigner travel to HK and don't understand Chinese???). If you just need the change the menu, delete all the dll from the google map folder will do the trick (but the display content will still be Chinese). Otherwise, change the regional setting to UK or US.

Have no English handwriting, Only Chinese

Hello.
My HTC HD2 only recognises Chinese handwriting, and not English. I went on the settings but I can only chose between Chinese Traditional and Simplified.
Is there anyway I can delete the Chinese Langauge Pack and put the English one on?
Starting to think my HTC HD Has a Chinese ROM on it, could that be possible.
I have CE OS 5.2.21869 (Build 21869.5.0.82)
Also when i turn the phone on, The writing right at the bottom says :
1.48 71284
Everything else is in English though, just the handwriting recognition there is no English for it.
See I don't want to go through the trouble of flashing to a English ROM so is there any files that I can modify to make the handwriting in English?
Regards.
yeah i have this same problem, but mine is an import from hong kong, so would explain why its like that, but i was also wondering how to change it to english handwriting?
Yeah it's a shame.
Anybody know ?
Will anyone here like to trade with me? I have the Tmobile version, and i want the hand write in chinese. Please PM me
English Handwriting
Hi, i got a hong kong htc hd2 import (simply electronics) and i have the same problem, the only handwriting options are for chinese
Also i have to say, the keyboard for the chinese language (when you press the chinese button on the english qwerty keyboard it looks like an iphone keyboard) looks much better than the htc english one, is there any way to change this?
After i try it for few hours, i give up. It is way too slow than the iphone. I return it back and turn back my iphone. I believe I will stay on the iphone...... unless one day they make a better phone.
