Is there a WIFI for dummies sticky here at XDA anyplace? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I did a search for WIFI, and only found some few 1,892,361 threads. It was a little daunting, so here I am wondering if we have a One-Stop-Shopping WIFI sticky that will break down how to use the WIFI on my X01HT.
I can see my home network with my TyTN. After I enter in the network key I'm still locked out without an explanation (yes I verified the key is correct). My TyTN just goes back to seeing my network as available
Soooo I'm thinking that I'm not the only person with WIFI issues. Sticky ... someone?

do you have mac filtering enabled on your router? if so you might want to add the mac from your phone..

Thanks for the idea shogunmark, but that's disabled by default.
Use IEEE 802.1x network access control
EAP type ???? dunno what this is.
linksys wrt54g ver6 router
HTC SoftBank X01HT w/TyTN ROM

There are several open networks around me (i live in an apartment building on the second floor) but I cannot connect with any of them

as an experiment try this..
exp 1. on your phone, go to connections and make sure you choose the "My Isp" connection (just in case your provider uses proxy, this wont prevent you from connecting to your router, but if a successful connection is made, it can prevent you from browsing)
exp 2. Turn off the security on your router and try to connect again.. this will help determine what is causing the issue, maybe its the phone, maybe its the encryption...
if neither of the above work then try this..
exp 3. put the phone in flight mode, then turn on the wifi and try to connect..
and i havent seen to many issues with the hermes and the linksys wrt54g, however i know there have been several other users with different phones have issues with these routers... but i think we can get you figured out here...

Lol ... I followed your instructions but a new problem came up last night. In the process of 'fixing" my WIFI issues I "fixed" my wireless network ... it ain't working now either
I'm going to host a new thread looking for wrt54g/hermes users to share with me their settings. I'll even add a paypal bounty for the post that fixes my woes.
I'm posting through a neighbor's WIFI connection right now which means I should be able to pick up this same connection with my hermes right? Not!?!?!?
SO now I have managed to not hook up my new toy and kill my own wireless network all in one night *shakes his empty valium bottle with a look of longing*. I think this is why God invented prosac.

For the record, reception of WiFi on the Hermes is really not terribly strong. That might be your problem all by itself.

i dont have a linksys (i wasnt that dumb, lol) i mean, i went another route but if your willing to, i wouldnt mind checking this out with you... if you want to you can pm me and we can set up remote admin on the linksys and take it from there...

I'd go to linksys.com and download./install the latest firmware. Make sure you reset everything back to factory defaults and start from scratch.
My Wizard and my Hermes, both on WM6, work with WEP on the Linksys wrt54G and my sonicwall tz150. Personally I prefer DLink now for low end wireless routers/access points but that's me
btw, I love your stickie Mike!

Woohoo so I now have my network back up.
All is well with my hermes too. Now if i can get skype to run I'll be a happy person.

Your sig indicates that your WM6 came "preloaded"... which ROM is it? (there are quite a few here...) If you don't know then I suggest that you read the WIKI and the stickies and such and then flash a newer ROM.
At least that's what I would do.

WiFi is definitely 802.11n...

Following Google page states 802.11n:
http://www.google.com/phone/static/en_US-nexusone_tech_specs.html
Following HTC page incorrectly omits 802.11n and shows 802.11b/g:
http://www.htc.com/www/product/nexusone/specification.html
Using SwiFTP 1.12 and a D-Link DIR-825 with a PC directly wired to the wireless AP via GbE, I get the following results:
Code:
ftp> put 1.0-update-nexusone-modacocustomrom-core-signed.zip
200 PORT OK
150 Data socket ready
226 Transmission complete
ftp: 68512910 bytes sent in 32.87Seconds [B][COLOR="Red"]2084.36Kbytes/sec.[/COLOR][/B]
ftp> quit
WPA2-PSK using AES-only.
I'm too lazy to look at the Broadcom specs but from the looks of it, it's definitely a 1x1 WiFi radio seeing it's only a 65Mbps link at 100% signal strength.

Neither of those links you gave shows Wireless-N and it has already been confirmed that it has Wireless N & FM t capability just like the iPhone 3GS and newest iPod Touch, but none of these devices have it enabled.
My nexus hasn't been able to see my N network. Although, mine is set to run in 5gHz and I see yours is running 2.4gHz Going to try switching to 2.4 and see if that works.

Doesn't work for me.... Also don't see why they would remove or fail to list an advantage.
11n is definately not enabled - the N1 can't even see my N network.
btw. "2084.36Kbytes/sec." is well within 11g speeds.. it's about 16Mbps.
Its been removed from the Google site now...

So why is the link speed 65Mbps? That's not within 54G specs.
That's what your router says.. it's not the speed you're getting, so I wouldn't trust it.
I've set my router into N only mode. The N1 connects at 65Mbps - which, as has been pointed out - is an N speed, not a G speed. No G device connected to the router when it was in this mode. The router reported the N1 as connected at 802.11N.
My N1 has an 802.11N radio, no question.
I doubt it actually needs or can fully use that speeds, but that's another matter.
Now I'm sort of tempted to setup another router that is N only just for the N1, BTW. That radio locked on to the N only router faster than I've ever seen it pick up any access point, including the same one in mixed mode.
I would have to agree, the Nexus One has an 11n radio in it.
Reason I know this is all last night and this morning I didn't have 3G (I now do at this time after logging into TMOs website), so I had to connect to my Linksys WRT600N.
WRT600N is running the latest DD-WRT...and I'm currently broadcasting N and A only with WPA2 Personal (AES/TKIP). On top of that, I am only running one of the two APs in my router, the one using the 5GHz band only.
theres an easy way to test it. Go into router settings and set your Wirless setting to 802.11n only, then check to see if the nexus one connects to it.

No, it's the negotiated speed. a G device would never negotiate 65
Not sure how you get more definitive than this:
ifixit teardown:
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Nexus-One/1654/2
Wireless chip is a BCM4329. FM Transmitter and receiver. Neat!
BCM4329 Specs:
http://www.broadcom.com/products/Bluetooth/Bluetooth-RF-Silicon-and-Software-Solutions/BCM4329
There's no doubt the chipset is N capable (whether it's setup that it could be enabled in software is yet to be determined). However is is *not* enabled. Both HTC and Google say this. Testing shows that if you switch a network into N only mode the phone cannot see it.. what more do you need?

According to the anecdotal evidence provided above, it is enabled, but not dual-band, just 2.4ghz.

Hi all,
Wonder if there is a wifi fix for nook touck connecting to ad-hoc wifi hot spots (cellphone) like that for nook color? This would fulfill my complete wish list...
Many thanks!
That would be neat. I can tether from my iphone, but I can't get Nook to see it...

Same here - that is because Nook only sees wifi hot spots in "infrastrucute" mode, which excludes "ad-hoc" type of peer-2-peer hot spots (iphone).
In Nook Color, this has been patched to support ad-hoc wifi.
Also, MyWi 4.61.1 for (jailbroken) iphone is said to support wifi in "infrastructure" mode, which I suspect works on iphone 4 only since my 3GS doesn't seem to have that setting...
Same on my 3G with 3.1.3 (whited00r jailbreak) - no infrastructure. I guess there might be a patch for nook STR, or maybe the same hack may work... worth a try, as the method posted in the NC forum creates a backup of the file involved in the hack.
Aug 4 Bump - adhoc achieved - ENJOY!
Congrats jo2kxda.
Will try it this weekend. If I don't break the nook with the update!

This could be due to a number of reasons, 1st thing I'd check is whether the ad-hoc network on laptop is setting up properly - is there a 2nd laptop or a desktop w/ wifi card that you can try connecting to this laptop? In theory once you cans see the network, you can connect to it.
EDIT: forgot to mention that I also did this:
Using Root Explorer to modify /system/etc/wifi/tiwlan.ini

In tiwlan.ini, look for "WiFiAdhoc = 0".
Change it to the following
WiFiAdhoc = 1
Let me know if this helps.

Had the same problem. Solved by tftpd32 (tiny DHCP server for WinXP).
P.S. But after share activation for the internet connection it started to obtain IP address without tftpd32. WinXP run it's own DHCP-service (192.168.0.1).
Before adding the ad-hoc hack to the nook STR 1.0.1, whenever I turned the nook off (screensaver mode) and on again (even after a while), wifi would be working. After I added the ad-hoc hack, when I came back from screensaver I'd have to restart the wifi connection.
Has anyone else noticed that???
I'm interested in doing it for 1.1.0. Has anyone done it? Any problem (like the one I mentioned above)?
@up,
Positive, it works. Does not have affect on "Unsuccessful" message.
Works for my NTGlow with 1.1.5 fw.
I have the same problem as ''obtaining address'' and never done...I tried all the methods mentioned above ...this is an ad-hoc in my labtop windows xp...I tried using another labtop and I successfully connected to my labtop ad-hoc connection...someone here said something about ''tftpd32'' but I cant figure out what's that and how to use that...
can anyone here give a complete tutorial on how to solve this issue ?
I appreciate if someone could help...
Hello, I had the same problem. I set up ad-hoc connection with my laptop using static ip address 192.168.0.101 and now everything is working. Cheers

Networking problem, need help please

Help,please.
Meet the problem. Transformer connected to my home wifi network. All devices in network connected to the internet, except Transformer. Manually configured network. I tried different wifi networks. All wifi networks successfully connected, but without internet. It looks like transformer could not route. i could not ping machines in the same network. Is there anybody who has same problem??
Thanks in advance
P.S. Who knows how to make routing table? Transformer connects to wifi, can ping himself but could not ping gateway in the same network.
It happend when i started playing with ROMs. Installed different ROMs with super wipe (Revolver, Revolution HD, Megatron, ICS WW_epaduser9_2_1_24, same problem.
have you tried switching the router off for a few minutes and rebooting it?

O yess, many times. If it is router problem, then all other machines could not connect to internet over wifi. Only Transformer could not, and tested on 3 different wifi networks (with and without DHCP)
probably wont help, but what about Kernel - have you tried different Kernels?

I tried different kernels, (Kernel-ICS-V22.6-OC1700-fb-AOKP_646, kernel_asus_rev01) but what kernel would you suggest?
if those have not worked then i doubt any others will. Rev3 Harmony (asus or universal) depending on which base your going to try - or the latest Guevor, version depending on base again.
Wifi is not my thing but thought id ask the obvious just incase. sorry i cant help more but im sure someone will be along soon :good:
WTF.
Installed Kernel Guevor N22.6 and Revolver 4.0.3 ROM. Same problem. Connected to wifi but no internet.
Even I disassemble Transformer and reconnected batteries. Does not help
Is it possible that hardware problem in wifi? Why in that case wifi connected? Magic.
First try turning air plane mode on then off to see if that works also your network may not like androids long default host name so consider changing that if you have root
What router are you using? make sure your using channels 1-11 (not 12 or 13) and check your on 2.4 GHz not 5 GHz
For the present test im using connectify soft and share my internet over my laptop. And it worked before. I installed busybox and did some commands. It looks like oruting table is correct, def gateway is pinging, interface is up. But could not connect to any site over integrated brower, could not connect to youtube or playmarket or gmail. Attached is screenshot. Maybe i lost something.

I reflashed Transformer up to latest ICS WW 9.2.1.27. Did not help. Still connected to wifi, but could not access to internet.
giving your router configuration and brands, could help I think...
in my period of owning a transformer, there are one place at where I live where it can't connect to.. a free wifi at a restaurant.. it just cant't, it detects but it can't connect.. the channel was within 1-11, but still not connectable.. I've tried different roms and kernel, still to no avail.. while my other device can connect to it just fine... maybe there are some router that transformer not compatible with..
Problem is that transformer could connect to wifi network without any problem. It shows that connected to internet, but could not open any site or youtube or gmail.

[Q] Unable to connect to Wifi. "Authentication error occurred"

Hello everyone!
I just got the S4, and im really impressed by it.
But for a heavy youtube user, beein unable to connect to my home wifi is a big problem.
I know this is not 100% the right forum, sice i have the I9505 edition of the phone (I'm from Norway), but I guess this is the best forum to ask.
Whenever I try to connect to my home wifi I immediately get the message "Authentication error occurred" and the S4 wants me to insert password again. I did manage to connect to the wifi for some breef moments using the "Wifi connection manager" application, but it suddenly stopped working after I put the phone to lock screen. I have updated the phone in Kies, Rooted it to maybe find some fixes, rebooted the access point, forgot and reconnected the network, and still no luck
Here is some info on the wifi:
WPA-PSK (personal)
We use an access point for the wireless singals. This is a Moterola AP-5131
But considering there beeing 4 iPhones and 2 laptops already connected to the wifi, I doubt it beeing the AP that is the problem.
I really hope that there is a phone-side fix to this problem, because it is easier to hack into the Matrix than to acces the AccesPoint.

Any help is more than welcome! :highfive:
I have noticed the same "authentication error" on mine as well with public sites like Sams club and target to name two. Never had this issue on the S3.
There is a known issue concerning the S4s ability to connect to certain routers or APs. The issue is most prevalent on D-Link equipment but there have been reports of Cisco, Linksys, and other wireless APs having issues as well. Instead of getting a different phone, I opted to get a new router and I have been good ever since.
There is an issue with Android 4.2.x where WiFi will not connect to certain wireless routers or APs as well but with the Galaxy S4, the issue seems to affect more D-Link hardware than any others - I don't know why. It's a really weird problem.
As for correcting the problem, you will basically have to tinker with the wireless settings of the wireless router or AP you wish to connect to until it works - and it may work for only a small period of time. No amount of tinkering worked for my D-Link DIR-655 so I purchased an Asus RT-AC66U and I can connect now. I've heard of success with Netgear routers as well.

Thanks for the replies! I just think its funny how 4 iPhones are connected, but the S4 wont connect.
I think I will try flashing stock firmware a couple of times first, just to be sure that this is not a phone-side error. As i said in my OP, the AP is like the Fort Knox. I will have to serial into it using telnet software, and I dont have the cables.
But as you said, I might end up with buying a new AP :/
That sounds like an awful lot of hell to go through just to change some wireless settings lol. Try changing your security key to AES encryption and see if that works.
I used to relish the battles I fought with my electronic equipment, aka toys lol. Now I just want them to work without a fuss. Thats one big reason I bought a new router.

Yeah it IS hell, but as I said, the only way for me to log into my AP is to reset the damn thing to factory settings first, because I think WAN port access has been disabled In the settings. Bloody buisness solutions -_-
I have tried all the IP adresses suggested In the manuals, and change to static settings to match the submask

Would you happen to have a link for more info in this? I am running a D-Link DIR-655 as well
Edit: I did some poking around and found this/ I did not come up with this I just found it at the site linked below. It seems to have helped me.
-------------------------------------
1. Login to your router
2. Go to the setting for wireless 2.4 (probably radio 1) (For [COLOR=#840000 !important][FONT=inherit !important][COLOR=#840000 !important][FONT=inherit !important]Sitecom[/FONT][/FONT][/COLOR][/COLOR] go to tab Basic> subtab Wireless 2.4 GHz)
So what i changed here is the 802.11 mode. (there are several modes like: just 802.11b, just 802.11g, just 802.11n, mixed 802.11b and 802.11g, mixed 802.11g and 802.11n ........)
>>> I Put It On: "mixed 802.11g and 802.11n"<<< (it used to be on mixed 802.11b, 802.11g and 802.11n)
3. Secondly i disabled Auto Channel Scan. This allowed me to select a Wireless Channel (frequency/channel).
>>>I Chose the highest channel ("2.472 GHz - CH13")<<<
4. I used to have the Transmission Rate at the option "best (automatically)"
>>>I changed this to the option: "54" (Mbit/s)<<<
5. I have channel width at the option: "auto 20/40 MHz" (but it always used to be this one)
Furthermore i have the following settings:
> Security mode: "[COLOR=#840000 !important][FONT=inherit !important][COLOR=#840000 !important][FONT=inherit !important]WPA[/FONT][/FONT][/COLOR][/COLOR] - Personal"
> WPA Mode: "WPA or [COLOR=#840000 !important][FONT=inherit !important][COLOR=#840000 !important][FONT=inherit !important]WPA2[/FONT][/FONT][/COLOR][/COLOR]"
> Cipher Type: "TKIP and AES"

Yeah thats basically everything one will need to try in order to resolve the problem.
I refuse to slow my router down to 54g though, even if it would have fixed the problem, which it didn't.
Is there any solution on the phone side?
I have the same problem, but the router is in company network, and there is no way I can access it.

I had the same issue. I use a linksys with wpa security. Use tkip cipher. I was on AES and would not connect. Just remember to reconnect your other devices to wifi.

I had that happen when I first tried to connect to my home network. I "forgot" the network, rebooted the phone, and typed everything back in. It worked for me. YMMV
Update firmware on your router/access point.
Then set security to WPA2-Personal.
Use AES. TKIP is more secure but much slower.
Everything else leave on auto/default.
Zapha did you ever find a solution?
I have the AP-5131 at work as well. I have had the the same problem on my HTC Evo 4G LTE since it first upgraded to Jelly bean. Zero issues on ICS. So far every JB ROM I've tried has the same issue. Iphones, ipods and laptops are also connecting fine
So far my only solution has been to unplug wireless and plug it back in. It will reconnect until i wander out of range and i get the error again.

Yeah it IS hell, but as I said, the only way for me to log into my AP is to reset the damn thing to factory settings first, because I think WAN port access has been disabled In the settings. Bloody buisness solutions -_-

I realize this is a somewhat older thread, so if I need to repost a new one please let me know. My gf and I both have S4s, but only mine is modded. She's currently in the hospital with pneumonia and she asked me if they had a Wi-Fi connection there for her phone. When I searched I found 4 open hotspots, and upon connecting only a webpage came up asking to agree to their terms and conditions before it connected.
Mine, on the other hand showed that it connected without an agreement page, but I wasn't able to use ANY data functions, be it Wi-Fi or LTE. Turning off Wi-Fi didn't help the issue, so only a reboot got my LTE working again. This wasn't the first time this has happened to me, but only after connecting hers am I seeing anything else but it connecting (sort of). I should add here that I never have this issue at either my home or hers.
I've tried playing with the settings several times, so I wouldn't be asking if I found a solution... Lol! The only things I can think of are 1) my particular phone is faulty in some respect 2) it could be the rom I'm using, which is Goldeneye 8.0 at the present. In retrospect I've just started to notice this happening in the past month or so... I was able to connect to publics just fine prior to that, no matter if they were passworded or totally open. Any help would be immensely appreciated as always, and again I apologize if I should've created a new thread... Thanks in advance! :fingers-crossed:
I just want to add that my wife has this funny thing that some android phones cannot connect to the Internet.
Even my very Samsung s7 cannot log in to the net.the strange thing is on the day I bought the phone.it can be connected to wife.but the nx day it just cannot hooked up to the wi Fi.
Even stranger is my old s5 which has been hooked up to wifI previously also cannot connect.
I tried calling up the isp.the usual thing about switching off the router.re connect the cables to try a gin.no luck.the isp tech even said I key in the wrong password.I confirm that my password has never been changed before.I try up teen times to no avail
I finally found out that by retyping your security password on your router wireless settings solved the problem.even if it is the same password as before.I tried it and boom.wifi is back.everything is still the same password and all.but it will not connect until you retype your password again

[GUIDE] How to setup VPN for game streaming

I got VPN working on my shield... Quality is pretty good over LTE although with a lot more audio delay but that could just be LTE.
Step 1. Go to the Network and Sharing center and click the Change adapter settings button

"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",

}
Step 2. Press file -> new -> New Incoming Connection. Mirror settings below
Select user that you use. This will have the same user/pass as your computer
Step 3. Go to settings on your shield. Go to more -> vpn -> plus button (you may have to set a pin or pattern if you don't already)
Enter a name, your external ip address (or dynamic dns)
Step 5. Open the port TCP 1723 and GRE on your router. On fios actiontec this can be found in Port Fowarding and using the "PPTP" preset service.
Step 6. Click the new VPN entry on your Shield. Login and if all goes well it should say "Connected" YAY!
Great instructions, but my streaming PC isn't being detected.
NICE! Thanks.
should be noted that PPTP issn't secure. Same works for me via IPSec
Oh. My. God. I KNEW THIS WOULD HAPPEN!!! My Galaxy Note ll has full bars of T-Mobile LTE at my job. (Speedtests of 40MB/s and above). My home internet is 170mb/s and above. This is PERFECT! (Also note that the G-Note ll has unlimited data tethering as I work for TMO lol).
I have unlimited tethering too! (As long as I use a vpn!

It will work better if the computer accepting the vpn connections has a static ip
ok so am I forwarding to the IP on the shield or on the pc?
the pc you are using to accept the vpn connection
My isp is a jerk and I don't have access to the router configuration. Having the hardest time getting this set up since I have to tell them what to do over the phone. They apparently don't see anything on gre. Just Ip, forward port, and protocols TCP, UDP, and both

I probably do not have the same router, so the configuration isn't going to be the same. either way, I'm doing it over the phone because my ISP won't give configuration privileges, even if you have your own router.
what model router do you have? Also it will still be port forwarding and General Routing Encapsulation that need to be configured.
I have a comtrend Nexuslink 3100u. Its the isp's provided modem/router.
I never got the GRE setting figured out. So I tried setting an IP range in the IPv4 properties of the incoming. I now have a VPN, but I still can't access my streaming PC.
I've noticed after I got connected through the VPN my geforce PC was coming up as offline when I looked but when I tried to launch steam it seemed to work and launch all my games, it can get a little funky though sometimes it just won't work other times it works fine
Yup. I've been toying with it a bit now and I got it to work. I could probably use a bit more upload speed on the local side.
Am I reading this right? Does this allow usage of the streaming feature while not being local?
As mentioned above it says sound is way off, but what about the video?

My home internet runs the upload speed at 1mbps. Not great. If I run the hotspot from 3 bars of 4G on my phone to my shield, I can stream my pc games to my shield at a playable speed.
I seem to have a problem if I'm a certain distance from my house on 4g hotspot it always disconnects in the middle of a game, could it be because of my home internet connection

That's awesome to hear, especially since in my experience my hotspots tend to have a higher latency than regular connections. By the way after the audio update how is the audio sync with video on your hotspot? What would you estimate your average latency to be from your input to action taking place in game?
