fring is now available for WM5 and WM6 !!! - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

For any of you who've been using a Nokia Symbian phone in recent months, you'll be happy to hear that fring has just released a WM5/WM6 fring client on a "preview" basis (beta of the beta - but not quite alpha testing).
fring was the one thing that was tempting me back to my Nokia E61 after finally "fixing" my TyTN. Basically, it's a combined VOIP/IM client that supports Skype, Google Talk, MSN and SIP as well as it's own community.
So those of you still stuck on WM5 or SJPhone forget about it. For those with any issues whatsoever with the WM6 VOIP client, forget about it. From my experience, fring SIP over 3G was even better than the built-in Nokia SIP client on the E61 over wifi in terms of call quality and availability (and that says a lot).
Does it have bugs, yes. Does it need improving, yes. But it's still the best thing out there. And even if you only use Skype Mobile, the RAM usage of fring is less than half (although call quality for Skype seems to be noticably lower than over SIP).
Anyway, just wanted to give you a heads up. Don't kill me if you hate it (and no, I'm in no way employed by them). To find it, just do a google search for fring or go to www.fring.com. Their Windows Mobile forum can be found here:
http://www.fring.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=11

I have problem to in stall it on my Hermes.... Can`t install it...

Fring - Hermes not supported
After registration i recieved the following message:
Your handset is not supported ... yet.
I'am eager to try fring, but we have to wait until the Hermes is supported.
somebody out there, running fring on a hermes?
Edit: Now i recieved my downloadlink, hmmm i will try later tonight back home and report back....

Tried this morning b4 seeing this post. It works quite well...

it works
I finally installed fring, and it works..... (just tried skype)
tried over GPRS&G3, and the phone wakes up from standby flawlessly
i also like those facts (bandwith usage):
fring for symbian phones consumes
~ 8MB for 60 min of mobile-VoIP call;
0.05 KB per Instant message
fring overhead ~ 10KB per hour connectivity
i hope those figures are equivalent to those on a WM5/WM6 device....

i kept getting a no internet connection error...

Any way to take the: "On mobile by www.fring.com" ??

Thanks for the heads up from Quist! I had just installed the new version of Skype only to have it crash everytime I make a call, just about to go back to the old version but will give Fring a go as just the fact that is not as memory hog like Skype appeals to me.

Warning to those on limited data plans
Be aware that fring automatically starts and attempts to log in every time the device is reset. Since I do a backup every morning at 2:00 AM using Spb Backup, which does a soft reset afterwards, my GPRS data usage skyrocketed. Not to mention that I was fast asleep at 2:00 AM, not ready to talk to any contacts at that time. Bad, bad fring! Bye, bye fring... I may try you again when you behave better!
I know that there is an easy way to stop it from doing this, but it is just the principle behind it. I hate programs that try to second guess my wishes and do things on my behalf without asking me whether that is OK or not. Besides, it should have the option of not using GPRS/3G for those of us on limited data plans (in my case, $30 per month for 7 MB of data download!)

DOH!!! How did I miss that one?! And guess what? There is also an option "Disable autostart". OK, now I feel like a fool. Maybe I should edit my original post to say "Make sure that you disable autostart if you don't want fring to log in at 2:00 AM after a soft reset, and make sure to disable GPRS/3G if on a limited data plan."
My apologies to the fring developers.
John

this software is pretty bad ass,, i finally got it to work a few days ago.... i even started a call with a friend on google and it worked great!!!
thumbs up!

Did your Google Talk call go through your speakerphone speaker? Is there a way to change that?

You have two (maybe three) options: The first is to use the built-in rear speaker (the default). The second option is to connect the wired headset that came with your device. The third option (I haven't tested this or know anyone that has got it to work, but according to Teksoft's web site it should work on the Hermes) is to use Bluemusic to redirect the rear speaker output to a Bluetooth headset.
There is no way to use the built-in front (ear) speaker as this is reserved for the phone hardware.

Check out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=315654 for a FULL review of Fring.

Call and Receive E-mail at the Same Time..??

I currently have an O2 XDA2s and am considering switching to the Wizard for the larger, more legible keyboard (who at O2 came up with the idea of pairing a blue backlight with turquoise special characters on the xda2s keyboard!!?), a higher resolution camera and what I hope will be (based on reading the Magician Forum) a better overall integration of features.
I use my device for business and so receive a lot of "real time" e-mail via our GoodLink service and do a fair amount of teleconferencing.
One of the limitations of the current collection of devices is that when yu are on the phone, no e-mails are received. As soon as you hang up, they all start to download/ be pushed to the device.
In reading about the dula processor architecture on the Wizard, it raised the question of whether the Wizard would be capable in theroy, or better yet practice! of receiving and displaying an e-mail while you are on the phone..??
Does anyone know or care to offer an opinion?
Regards
Chris
If youre receiving the emails by GSM/ GPRS then while you are in a phonecall you wont be able to receive them... however, maybe if you can use WiFi simultaneously with GSM you might be able to.
Hi ShALLaX
Many thanks. That's the same as the Blue Angel then... Interesting idea about the wi fi connection though... I will try that and see if it works on my xda 2s. Will let you know.
Wonder if the Universal will have the capability, as it appears its using a separate 3G modum for data..?
Regards
chris
Well some good news here is that you can indeed send and receive e-mails via wi fi at the same time as being on the phone.
So the moral of the story is.... always do your teleconferences from Starbucks¡
Heheh, good job!
As far as I know...the GPRS class in both BlueAngel and Wizard supports calls and GPRS activity at the same time. But the GSM network you are connected to must allow it. None of the networks here in Norway allows it

Hi t0flus
Thats very interesting... that must be why it does not work in the us either.... I will be interesting to see if the wizard behaves any differently. Will hopefully be able to try it out in a couple of weeks

I can confirm that the Jam does this , as my TomTom GPS accepts calls while updating Traffic info over GPRS. Hope this helps.

I think you experiencing a delayed reaction. The data must have been recieved before the call began, but was only rendered on the screen after the call was started.
The ability to receive data and use voice at the same time is dependent on the type of modem. In order to do it the device must have a class "A" modem. PPC Phone Edition devices use class"B" modems. Class "B" only allows one at a time, either voice or data.
Dave
Not sure, all I know is as part of the setup with TomTom 700 it asks you if you want to recieve calls and access Internet at the same time. I chose this option and it seems to work. Well I've had no problems yet.

Here is a link that explains it. Scroll down till you see the explanation for class B. All Pocket PC Phone Edition devices that I know of use class B modems.

No GSM Network in the world allows simultaneous GSM call and GPRS - the technology can't do it (at least what's in operation can't).
In UMTS land, you typically get allocated 128kbps of bandwidth... during a call, 64kbps is reserved for voice/video, and 64 is available for data download.
So to answer your question - yes in UMTS land, yes with wifi as the data bearer
Thanks Southern Man! Where have you been?... and where is that new O2 UK !.40 ROM with the Blackberry client for the xda2s?

Skype for non-XScale vs Skype?

OK, we can all download Skype from the official site. However, it appears to come bundled with the K-Jam with under the name
Default_SkypeForPocketPCnonxScale.CAB
Is there a difference between the two, and will the nonXScale version work somewhat better on the Wizard?
Does any one have this cab file so i can test it on my o2 xda miniS?

I think you can find it on the ftp of this site
nothing works for me
i dont no whats gone wrong for me...with 50+ hard resets...100+ times downloads and redownloads of all possible versions...with writting in all forums including skype....it just doesnt even open for me once....
funny but its true...i am in tears with this device as my brother in australia and me in india spend loads of money everyday....anyone who can help me have a version working on my device will get 100dollars gift...through paypal with loads of love...
one more funny thing worth to notice...everytime i write in skype about this issue a few people (same ones) just write after me how well it works for them and a few other things that dont happen for them...this just kills my querry and i have given up now...i just hate windows mobile 5 only for this.
Try this one. It's from the K-JAM extended rom.
EDIT:
File Upload does not work for me...
But you can download it here
http://rapidshare.de/files/8474397/Skype_KJAM.cab.html
I have installed the one from K-jam on my qtek 9100, and it works great over wifi.
I think it is probably the same as the the 1.2 beta on skype site...
Skype Non Xscale on XDA mini?
Hi, I got that copy of the non xscale kjam version of skype and tried to install it on my o2 xda mini and i get the message:
"Your device is not supported by the Skype sound engine. Calling functionality will be disabled"
Any suggestions?
Thanks
I tried all 3 versions (K-Jam, Offical, Offical Low CPU) and all give me equally bad results even with perfect WiFi reception. I tried calling the "echo123" test service and the voice lags and drops from time to time.
One time it worked perfectly but in the same config it didn't work on the next try.
@deepak:
If you need voip so badly mabe you should just consider another VoIP software like SJPhone which works realy well on the wizard. But of course it won't help you with skype contacts.

If I loaded SJPhone on a Wizard, what would be a good VOIP provider to use? I've only used Skype up to this point and I'm not familiar with the providers that support WM5/PDAs.
I tried the latest Skype beta and the Skype Beta Low CPU and the K-JAm non XScale version, but the Low_CPU version had a very bad sound quality. While the normal version works very well. So, althought the Wizard only has 200MHz (dual core) and the low_cpu version is for 316Mhz pda's, the wizard should not be seen as a low cpu pda.
So I recommend the official Skype Beta standard edition that is available on the site of Skype.
(Still trying to get SJPhone working with VoipBuster, I can connect, but I can't see anybody online to call, although they are online on the VoIPBuster desktop version)

@Matterhorn:
I tried the german provider SipGate.de . But I think all SIP compatible providers should work.

Selling Hermes!

As I have it for 2 months now I have decided to sell it anyway. Why you ask?
Because:
I use the phone for business and after that for private use and it is not quite what I have expected.
Sometimes, quite often infect, I can not answer the incoming call, it just freezes so I have to return calls, really stupid.
The MMS function works horrible, only every 3rd mms gets sent, and SMS is even worse, for only every 10th sms I get delivery report and my clients get more, like 3-5 sms from me.
Do not know why this is happening I really fell in love with Hermes, but some things just must work!
I will tray it maybe later, when the device will be faster, more stable, no more every day soft resets and certainly working for the money I paid for!
Hope yours is working right!
Cheers!

Sorry to hear that vid200. I won't be returning to this site for a few days, so can't check back for an answer, but have you tried upgrading/changing your ROM to a better and more stable one? I was quite upset with my TyTN until 2 weeks after I bought it, I decided to change the ROM to one that everyone was saying was good and stable. It's a simple process if u haven't done so, but do a search on it first.
Unless ur unit is faulty (and it just sounds like software issues), probably everything can be put absolutely allright with a little more time.
Best of luck.
How much?
How much of the Hermes you want to sell?
you know.. if you want to donate the phone i am accepting donations

You haven't any overnight freezing?
No need to delete MSMETADATA folder in storage card to have it seen again from windows media?
Good sound from bluetooth earphones?
No problem with bluetooth devices?
Full day use of push e-mail?
No problems with pocket outolook?
Please this is a developer forum, any opinion is valuable, but don't call us stupid!

What about Wi-fi ? ,how does is wokr ? properly? I have heard about cab. bug . If want use ,need download new one (fixed) from ERA site.
How does the "loose slider" in Vario II ?
How's bluetooth connection with PC ? (Vario II - internet modem)

1. no freezing. pda working all time on stable about >1 mounth.
2. Windows Media allways see files on phone and storage card.
3. I use Nokia HS-4W, working very fine, no problem with sound.
4. I use bluetooth for connecting with PC (files/activesync/etc), nokia hs-4w and navigo SirfStarIII GPS. Working stable/good.
I don't use push email service. Only sms/mms,all working good, exept as i say, some of testing apps (when i have wizard it's too) doing some bad and when i send sms it's deliver about 2-4 times to recipient. But when I hard reset i have stock pda with some base apps all good. I must have more time to test apps one by one, which doing this bad.
And next post:
No problem with WiFi, i use on work/home, in city, MC'donalds. I see on era page this cab for hmm "fix" something in wifi, but wifi working then i don't apply it. loose slider? don't see any problems. And i don't use vario as modem for PC.

I can also say the same thing. My device works well with the 1.35 SA Rom. Direct push all day about 50 to 75 emails each day, Sony HBH-DS970 bluetooth, 3g on all day..does not switch to gprs. Use bluetooth gps receiver a couple times per week, no problems. Play mp3 via bluetooth everyday from my sdcard, I have never had to delete the msmetadata folder. Receive phone calls 15 to 25 times per day, no issues. I also have spb pocket +, SPB Weather, SPB Diary, TCPMP, TOmTOm 5.21, Pocket Mechanic, SKtools, PpcWEbcam, IM+, Pocket Informant, MS One Note, VxUtils, PHM Regedit, Total Commander, and Sprite Backup without issues. But as for SMS/MMS.. i couldn't say.I don't use either except for about 5 daily alerts for weather and stock quotes. Don't really send any sms or mms, use email instead....

I agree, the only solution is to admit that there are hermes and Hermes, may be here many of us have the hermes release, the poor brother.
I have the same 1.35 SA Rom, no Sbp SW (may be it helps?) and I delete MSMETADATA twice a week.
I had to reset (due to freezing) every day. Seriously speaking, it could be a problem in SD driver. My storage card (and many of us) cards could be the faulty element of the chain
I'm a light user but the phone (Vario II) has been great for me. No problems whatsoever. Worked perfectly out of the box - and still does (two months later).
I switch it off every night (I don't want calls to disturb my sleep and even the guy behind the recent research into mobiles and tumours which said they were harmless said he wouldn't sleep beside his mobile phone!) and I think that this helps the device (i.e. one hard reset every day).
I find that I use my laptop much less these days because for the most common tasks (e-mail, checking presentations, finding information etc.) the Vario is adequate.

skype on 8525

hi all,
i've been trying to use Skype 2.2 for Windows Mobile Professional (Pocket PC) on my at&t 8525 windows mobile 6.
everything installs fine and i can connect to calls but the sound keeps on breaking in to pieces. plus the other person can't hear me.
i thought it was my slow 3g connection but it wasn't because i tethered the phone to the comp and used skype. that worked fine.
so i think it's a software issue? or the version that i'm using is wrong?
does anyone else have this problem? know how to fix? or which version of skype are you guys using with windows mobile 6?
oh i just found the solution, for those that have the same issue. you need to get an earlier version of skype: Pocket Skype 2.2.0.18 Beta!
get it here: http://smarthacks.com/2007/06/26/wo...-trinity-p3600/
I have the same problem on my Dopod 838 pro. Can't find a good solution because I'm using Windows Mobile 6.1. Forced to use the newest version with crippled sound engine. Anyway, the link appears to be erroneous to me. Error 404 in that blog.
Same problem here. Sound breaks up. Using Schap's 4.31.

Just wanted to say in advance, Thanks Mike.
Just checked my Skype account, so I can talk to an old friend in Poland, and hoping this will ease this...
Do you know if it'll work through the WIFI on the phone? (Hermes). Or do i have to preconnect it to something first?
mobile skype the same as desktop skype is a bloated, useless piece of sh..software.
The reason the sound is breaking is probably because skype takes up all the available processor's resources and it's not enough for it.
I use fring, the sound quality is not as good, but at least it's bearable.

Yes it works through wifi. It's a while since I set it up, but simply put, if you are connected to your PC by wifi and the connection connects to the internet then Skype will too.

SIP-callws with the X2

I found a thread where people where discussing about enabling SIP-Calls on their winmo-phones (6.0). Curious as I am, i installed the cabs and configured my phone, and voilá, i got my X2 hooked up against my VoIP-server, even if I have winmo 6.5.
For those who are interested, just follow this guide or alternatively this guide. Both guides explain more or less the same thing. What i did not get to work was the _setup.xml part, and instead of that i just used the Sip Configuration Tool that can be found over here (I used the SipConfigTool_2_0_1.CAB version).
I'm not sure if i needed this entry, but i edited this anyway:
HKLM\System\VoIP\SIP
EnablePort5060 = 1
For the unpatient:
Install this CAB: ftp://xda:[email protected]/Hermes/WMXL_Support_Files/WM6VoIP.CAB
Then install the SIP Config Too: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=45205&d=1185523399 and use the newly installed SIP Config Tool to configure your SIP-server + login etc. If it does not connect, then try this with a registry-editor:
HKLM\System\VoIP\SIP
EnablePort5060 = 1
Basically it worked for me, though the incoming sound was not routed into the earpiece, but to the speaker on the back.. One problem that occured was that the dialplan-file did not work for me. my next step is to check that out, and see if I can manage to get it configured for Finland..
I hope that i remembered all steps.. If something is missing, then i'll try to help out.
Disclaimer: Naturally this is up to you what you do with your SEXX2. For me this worked..
I have an X1 and I use it for SIP calling for quite some time now. I must recommend a good program called AGEphone Mobile 2.9.1.2 and the new version corrected all the bugs that I was having with this program. It will access all your contacts on the phone, and the sound quality over wifi (even public ones) is very very good.
I reccomend it to anyone that wants to use their phone for SIP calling.

Just be careful, because SIP calling drains your battery very fast. When I call for more then 30 min I disable the phone network and only enable Wifi, as that way the phone does not get as hot and the battery can last a few more hours. But don't think it won't drain about 1% of battery every 2 min, at least that's +/- what I get.
To be honest, I've tried WM VoIP and it sucked on the Xperia...
I second AGEphone... It works, and nicely

But.. I get the sound just in the rear speaker, and NOT in the earpiece... So this i not the best solution to talk without privacy... :-(

On the X1, AGEphone runs perfectly! (Through the ear piece!)
