Google Mobile Maps and Bluetooth GPS - Wing, P4350 General

Hi all,
Just a note to let everyone know that the smartphone solution to configure the Windows GPS API works as is on the Herald.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293397
Enjoy!

Hi,
sorry for this definitively noob question but what can I do with your freeware ?
Does it mean that, if I have a GPS, I can use Google Maps (with satellite view) as the "live map" ? (sorry for the bad translation )
If I remember well, we can't download google map for offline view so it means that we need a data connection through GPRS to download in live the map ?
Thank you and sorry if my questions don't mean anything

yesterday was the first time i use my bluetooth gps with google maps or live search, but i noticed that google maps and live search have to activate the cingular data connection before i can use it..... which means that we cant use that GPS for free?

Both Google Maps and MS Live Search ( Maps ) are "live" meaning they require a data connection ( WiFi, GPRS etc ). Problem is that on the smartphone platform the Windows GPS API that Google Maps uses for its bluetooth interface to exteranl GPS devices is missing the configuration utility in the settings. This is also the case with some PPCs like the Herald.
The utility I wrote allows you to configure the comm port for the GPS API and allow Google Maps to use an external BT GSP device for live tracking on a map.
Hope this explains the funtionality.
Read through the original thread for more details.

Indeed that's a great idea, thank you !
Here in France, it will be quite difficult to use it because we are restricted with a very little data volume for a month so...
And with wifi, even if there is a way to do that, I dont think it is possible because as far as I know we are moving with the GPS so... no AP everytime everywhere

I don't like using wifi to spot locations, maybe it is me, but it doesn't convince, I have never even tried it, I prefer to use a Bluetooth GPS, IMO it is more reliable and you don't depend on anything else. Right now I am looking to upgrade my GPS to a SiRF Star III one and saw one from Deluo for under $100, does anyone have one of these? It looks interesting..... any feedbacks on the performance will be appreciated

Work flawlessly on JasJagin rendering VGA quality maps.
I was looking for such an application whan I was in Turkey and Greece. Now I am thinking going to Thailand so Ill check it.
Best,

Does the software get the map from Google earth? As some of the small places doesnt have clear maps, it is quite difficult to get anything useful out of it. Further, I find Google earth is pretty good for looking for interesting 'things' within an area, and not that good for finding directions.
Good question. I dont know. At first I though it take maps from Google but later on I thinks it connect to Microsoft map server and pulls map from there.
As for usability - You're right , some areas are not very detailed but You have soft which cover whole earth! I have GPS soft which covers eu very precise but it is completly usless in Asia or elswere. Thats why I found this soft exceptionall because You can use it everywhere.

Several Issues including Google Maps, Windows Live Messenger, Upgrading and Games.

I just had my HTC Touch HD T8282 with MW version 1.14.403.3(22273) WWE. I have several questions and hope to find answers here.
1. Google maps were not already installed, I installed it by myself from mobile.google.com. The program works fine but it does not find any satellite. Is it normal ? I am living in Turkey.
2. Should I upgrade my OS to 1.19... by using the OliNex ? I mean are there any big differences between those two versions ? I don't see any lag on my device currently. Are there so many new properties coming with the new version ? I am using my pda mainly for business.
3. This is my biggest problem. From Start>Programs>Messenger I open Windows Live Messenger. I choose sign in as Busy, Online or Away, etc. Then I click sign in and proceed to mail&password screen. But at that screen I cannot write my e-mail !! I can write my password thus I cannot click the sign in button because the mail is not written. Its the 2 of the 5 steps. What should I do? If the upgrade will fix this issue I will do it immediately. Messenger is a must for me in pda.
4. What is the best source for downloading .cab game files.
Thanks.
google maps no need any satellite you just take data from the google server, all u need is an active internet connection.
u can try IM+ messenger or ebuddy java.
for games u can try some arcade emulator for classic gb, snes or megasis. its really fun 4 me
Please someone help at least about messenger problem !!
Maybe you should try a cooked rom, with some newer sources.
By default, Google Maps doesn't use GPS, since you don't need GPS to show an address on the map, you just need an internet connection.
GPS is useful is you want to locate precisely your current position on the map. In this case, you can force Google Maps to use GPS by going to Menu > Use GPS. (Note that if GPS is not activated, Google Maps will still be able to locate you on the map. I will use your GSM cellular location and show map the area covered by this cellular and in which you are supposed to be)
Okay I understand but using googlemaps via GPRS outside is not free obviously, that's why I ask if GPS works on googlemaps so that it can be free. But it does not either find any satellite, I think this is because of I am in Turkey. What is the best free GPS program just using satellites not any kind of other conneciton. Thanks.
By the way I figured out the messenger problem !!

As long as your maps aren't cached already Google Maps will have to download it. Therefore Google Maps isn't a good solution for outdoor navigation with GPRS (3g), if you have no special data flatrate.

VisualGPSce is free. A better solution (based on the source of VisualGPSce is BeeLineGPS, which you can try for free 30 days long.

Maybe you should describe what you have done, so others can make profit out of it.
How I solved the messenger problem;
I opened the windows live program. From the options I selected the ''Switch Windows ID''. After that I had the ability of entering my mail adress !!
Can you also say something about:
2. Should I upgrade my OS to 1.19... by using the OliNex ? I mean are there any big differences between those two versions ? I don't see any lag on my device currently. Are there so many new properties coming with the new version ? I am using my pda mainly for business.

I think its up to you, but if there is nothing you are unhappy with and you don't need some of the functionalities provided with the cooked roms you shouldn't do it at all.
Flashing the HardSPL means that you could use your warranty. Even if there is a way backwards, it could get tricky, so at any rate you will have to read through the various topics, so you know what you are doing.
There is also a USPL, which don't changes your SPL, but your device could get bricked, if you try to flash a non-working rom.
what functionalities are provided with the cooked roms ?? I really have no idea about that..

GPS usable without data connection?

Hey everybody,
is there any possibility to use the built-in google maps application without data connection? After disabling every data data connection and activating gps, I get an error telling me that a data connection is needed.
This doesn't sound logic, does it? I mean, I activated the GPS-module, so where is the prob?
Can anybody help me?
THX
Sebastian
The GPS will work without a data connection.....however, GoogleMaps needs a connection to download the maps of your area.....
Alternatively, you can use onboard nav solutions like TomTom7, Navigon, Igo, McGuider etc.....none of them free, though....
Is there an app that will simply use the onboard GPS to give you your position, speed, bearing, etc? Just a position would be useful. Either lat and long, or, say, OS grid ref.
Have a look to Nonigpsplot or Visualgpsce
Checking them out now. Thanks very much.
Personally I'm using BeeLineGPS, a commercial successor of VisualGPSce
That looks good too. Thanks.

PLease any one here can tell me
i have a HTC diamond Indian Version.....
i want to use GPS in it that too free...
i know its possible but can any one tell me how !!..?
will be really thankful to you!!
Do you mean GPS (Global Positioning System) or GPRS (General Packet Radio Service)!
If first, simply search and install HTC GPS Tool for activating your intenal GPS! The Tool is really self-explaining! If you meant GPRS, yo'll need a special data option from your provider for a fixed amount of money each month!

You can use Mapking,
It's not free but not expensive , and u have Trial few days...
it means without GPRS
i cannot use GPS!!!..
is that true!!.
i tried google maps ..
but it uses Internet... when i connected to my computer!!...
so if it uses internet then whats the use of GPS!!!...
It uses the Internet connection to download Google Maps data.
GPS is used for getting your actual position. With that position Google Maps will download a card snippet representing your actual position.

Dude... there are 2 types of GPS technology. GPS and AGPS(AsssistedGPS). programs like Google maps uses AGPS service, means, they use a packet service (GPRS/EDGE), to get a faster GPS fix. If you choose a GPS program, say Satguide etc.. they completely rely on GPS (can work without GPRS/EDGE), but you have to pay for the service and maps. You might get trial versions of these softwares, but i dont think any of them provides it for free.
Alternatively you could try GPS cycle computer, which would track ur path, speed, directions, altitude... , but it is not designed to overlay your current location on a map. However, it can provide you with a graph details about your route.
dude download map my india software....i will send u india's map........its free to use and dosent need any gprs connection

Offline Maps

Hi All,
Does anyone know of an application like google maps that allows you to download a complete country map to your device? In my case Australia. I used to have an N95 8GB and Nokia Maps allowed me to download the entire map of Australia to my phone so I could use it offline. I would like to do this on my HD. I have google maps installed and it is perfect apart from the fact the it must have a data connection to work. I know it can cache maps but I am not interested in that, I want mapping on the fly. I also have TOMTOM installed but it's maps lack detail and the ability to browse around a map is very poor.
If anyone knows of a solution please let me know.
Cheers
Craig
