my t-mobile ameo times out ? - Advantage X7500, MDA Ameo General

Hi
when syncing its fine
but when it comes to copying stuff over to the microdrive or
minisd card it times out vista come up with error saying device has turned off
anyone else had this prob ?
is there a timing setting i dont know about ?
cheers

Are they large files by any chance? If so, there seems to be a 'feature' of craptivsync and the Ameo where it won't copy large files (+20mb in my tests) without crapping out. The fix is to install wm5torage which makes the device act like a USB drive (overriding activesync). This works without issue and is about 1000x quicker than copying files via activesync. I'm using it even for small files as it seems to work at USB2 speeds rather than Serial Speeds! Do a search on here for Wm5torage and you'll be away.

I think all T-mobile user experience this problem, yes, the only solution now for you guys is to use the wm5torage. Luckily the DOPOD U1000 don't have this problem, and also an interesting point is my DOPOD U1000 transfer file equally fast as wm5torage via activesync, and no problem with large file as well. (over 2Gb)

I've not had any problems with my Ameo - copying 350 - 400 meg AVI files to the microdrive (using just regular ActiveSync only) works fine.
Well, I say fine - the progress bar goes a little bonkers. If it is to be believed, then the transfer restarts about half a dozen times, gets about 1/5th of the way through, then completes instantly.
But the files always end up on the Ameo fine.

Hi,
interesting to know it does it on some and not on others
i tried that program and it works fine
thanks for replys

I have only this problem when I transfer large files and I use my Ameo. When you leave your Ameo alone during the transfer their wil be no problem. I noticed this problem for the first time when a lot of programs were running.

ActiveSync - Explore doesn't lettransfer mp3s via Bluetooth

Hi,
I am using ActiveSync via Bluetooth ty sync my MDA Compact (HTC Magician...) with computer.
When I am trying to upload files to Storage Card in MDA, it always brokes. Sometimes one or two mp3s are uploaded, then ActiveSync disconnects. Everytime there are unfinished files.
There is enough space in card, same as memory of MDA is not full...
Do you use this way to upload files into MDA?
Does it work for you?
Installing (usually smaller than one mp3 size..) programs works for me.

I have never sync files with bluetooth but the fastest way is to use a USB cable - open windows explorer or similar app and drop the desire file in the storage card folder.
nevertheless you should be able to sync mp3 via bluetooth without problems. Bare in mind that as well as turning on bluetooth you need to tick receive all incoming beams
I´m quite new with my MDA may be some experience guys can help you further

MicroDrive issues

I'd like to start this thread as a separate and dedicate one for the multiple MicroDrive issues ...
We have a few HTC Advantage (T-Mobile Ameo) devices here.
Basically there seem to be 3 issues with the device all of which are related to the MicroDrive:
1) MD = NOT ROBUST
despite marketing slogans the MicroDrives still obviously are not at all robust:
- a security mechanism shall stop them when exposed to shock
- the device comes with integrated GPS and therefore will be used as navigation system: permanent use (espacially accessing the MicroDrive) in the car
- we see the MicroDrive stop and cease to function from time to time up to even resulting in complete system freeze
=> interim summary: shock proof mechanism and permanent use do not work both at the same time, short term stops and complete malfunction to be expected (very likely for the majority of devices)
2) MD = SLOW
several years of using Pocket PCs with all kinds of storage have shown us, that the MicroDrive belonged and still belongs to the slowest on the market;
=> currently we see ...
- much slower start of system (i.e. after soft reset) the more applications are installed on the MicroDrive
- much slower start of several navigation systems (TomTom, iGo, Navigon) which of course are installed (at least their maps) on the MD
- explorer / start menu / several applications accessing files stored on or links to applications installed on the MicroDrive show dramatically bad performance
3) MD -> BATTERY DRAIN
the only issue we read of but cannot yet 100% confirm;
we avoided to install applications with permanant access to MicroDrive, i.e. no today plugins etc have been installed on MD;
but: we can confirm that it takes a long time to load an empty battery or almost does not reload when using USB cable (via laptop / PC) instead of charging via AC adaptor
We read about similar requests and would definitely support them (if possible):
For all 3 issues as described above we would strongly opt for and recommend replacement by CF drives (i.e. Transcend CF 8 GB 120x).
!!! Does anybody have access to the service manuals ?
We'd actally like to do that replacement asap if there is any chance to.
Any comments / other experience ?
Thanks for Your feedback

From what i heard, that's why Advantage is delay , because the Rom they wrote doesn't deal with Micro Drive in the right and correct way. BUT Dopod u1000 one is fine, i personally own the DOPOD U1000, and the reading and writting speed of MD is at least 3 times faster than my High speed mini sd. Battery Drain is nothing, i guess it's all to do the the ROM, again, Dopod has prove to be a better Athena for now until someone make a better Rom.
I would love to replace the Micro Drive with CF Flash card, anyone has any idea how to do that?
A few points:
1. HTC recommends using the Mini-SD slot for fast operation of applications, navigation maps, etc. Meaning: you better install this stuff to a fast Mini-SD or SDHC card.
2. the 8 GB HDD is mainly for data storage/media storage
3. since the Ameo is using a 2200 mAh rech. battery, it takes much longer until it is charged by the USB port of a PC/laptop. Recharging the Ameo with the AC ad. is highly recommended.
I agree with your concerns but I think that HTC had to keep the price tag of the Athena at a certain level and the only way to do that was using a MD instead of NAND memory. Maybe they should have talked to Apple first.
The HTC X7500/Ameo/U1000 is a very nice Pocket PC Smartphone but I think people expect too much from it. If you want something really nice but very expensive, wait for the Vaio UX with built-in UMTS/HSDPA modem rumoured for this autumn. If you don't want to wait, the Samsung Q1b is just around the corner, it should be released soon. Built-in HSDPA included, a SSD version should be released shortly after. At slightly below 900 Euro (Ameo), this unit can't do wonders.

I've now got me an Ameo and can say this much...the above scenarios are slowly becoming a reality for me. MD is slow as hell and I can't even active sync large files across to it from PC. I can transfer no probs to SD card via card reader on PC then to MD via SD card once re-inserted.
This is not good. HTC should have known better and at least implemented a bit of software to allow for USB mass storage capability. I think I'd better do some more reading of the manual and research more about USB mass storage software.
I'm sure this was available some time ago for the Universal...just can't remember when or where.

I have the software here if you want, just give me your e-mail, i can send it to you
In the other hand, the result of DOPOD U1000 is very different, the Micro Drive in my device runs really well, (even faster than my mini-SD by doing the benchmark)
Transfer large file is no problem and is fast. Don't see any problem on it.
I guess after all, DOPOD still on top on writing Roms, hopefully the Advantage will sort their machine out when it comes out (since they are getting the help from DOPOD).
I also looking for a software can emulator USB mass storage , can u send me a copy? Thanks !

That's exactly what I was giving thought to earlier today.
Compact Flash shares similar interface to that of Microdrives. Now imagine
the effect of solid state in lieu of a spinning disc......
I also wonder if one could install a 16GB CF...............

USB 2.0

The specification of the HTC X7500 says USB 2.0 for the ExtUSB port (the slave port for the mini-USB connector).
So it should be theoretically possible to write to the MiniSD or MicroDrive with USB 2.0 hi-speed, using a PC and the cable.
Now.... anyone know how? ActiveSync and Windows Mobile Device Center seem to be limited to USB 1.1-speed and I don't think apps like WM5torage or Card Export Pro II will do the job.............. will they?
Use WM5torage for transferring big files. You get the USB 2 speed.
http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=238545
Are you sure ? In the notes it says "(albeit USB 1.0 only, and not very fast)". Has anyone tested actual transferrates ?
Oliver
It's has to be faster than USB 1.1. I copied two 700 MB movies to the MicroDrive, and that would certainly take forever with USB 1.1...

I don't believe it is - this site is normally accurate:
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=691
Well, still: With USB 1.1 copying 1.4 GB would take ALOT of time. It didn't, so it has to be faster.
when plugged into a usb 1 socket windows pops up the "this device can perform faster if you connect it to a USB2"..

I tried copying files using ActiveSync, but it was terribly slow (and it seemed like it started over and over). However; WM5torage is excellent!

Sorry, this is from the old times, when there were no high-speed USB 2.0 capable devices out there
I will correct it now
Actually, WM5torage supported high-speed USB from the version 1.0

just to clear one thing up....the standard USB port is 2.0
However according to HTC's own Spec sheet, the USB host facility through the 4 in 1 cable is 1.1
but yes, WM5torage is certainly quicker at transferring large files to the microdrive.
I get the same problem when sending large files with activesync. never had it until 4.5 was put on My PC. but then I thought that was a known bug with the crap that is activesync!

syncing problems

whether it's with the usb cable or the desktop cradle the sync between the phone and the desktop doesn't last for very long, it can vaey from 1min to 5min and is a real pain when it drops out whilst downloading a program.
Sometimes the display on the phone says it's syncing but if I look on the pc there is no sign of it in either windows explorer or the snyc centre (using vista), is this a vista problem or hardware/software problem with the phone.
thanks in advance

i used to have this problem... assuming you have already tried disabling the firewall and AV to see if it cures the problem (disconnect from the net first!)...
Firstly are you using WM6 or WM5?
if you are using WM6 then go to settings->Connections->USB to PC and untick enable advanced network functionality
if you are using WM5 then download the file (supplied by dopod) that makes the usb work using the serial protocol. the instructions are in the ZIP file, extract the cab file, copy it to your PDA (you may have to use a SD card reader if you cannot connect for long enough to send it or if not that use a SD slot on a Digital camera?) then find the file on your Prophet and install the rest is in the readme file.
ah shoot just read your running vista so probably not that! nevermind its something to try!
thanks for that, managed to put some videos on without the device crashing at long last

Napster To Go crashes

I did use Napster to go with my old HTC Touch (1GB Storage) without any problems.
Now I tried to use Napster to Go with my German HTC Touch Diamond 2 an a 16GB Sandisk SD card.
Somehow the WMD connection drops while transferring the files sporadically.
Neither Napster nor HTC feels responsible for the problem.
I also tried another Sandisk 16 GB storage card – but the problem remains.
Does anybody uses Napster To Go without any problems on the HTC TD2?
Does the connection problems exist within other circumstances?
Does nobody use "Napster to go"?
The problem is getting worse.
After a hard reset of my TD2 I was able to transfer about 40 music files without the device disconnecting.
Every transfer lowered the amount of transferable files.
Now I only have to start Napster with the TD2 connected and the Windows mobile device center caches and the device disconnects.
Strange, isn‘t it?

hello, i dont have a topaz, got a fuze, but i had this same problem, what i found out was i was having a software conflict, dont know which software i loaded, i did a hard reset and loaded everything then tried putting my music on and i would get disconnected, then i decided to hard reset again, this time i did not load anything, i started transfer and no problems. i would load about 7-8 gb of music, then load all my cabs, hope this helps
