Universal vs Athena - Advantage X7500, MDA Ameo General

We all know that Athena is the successor of the Universal. But why is htcphonestore.com listing Universal still for $1100 and Athena for $1500? Why is there such a low price difference? Isn't there a major progress from Universal->Athena? Should the price of Universal now be $600 and Athena $1500?
What do you all think? Is the Universal almost as good as Athena? Maybe something else? Please give technical comments only!

Hai wu, excuse me for bit of out topic, but you said if Omni is the successor of Universal. SO is that device is exis?
If yes is there any confirmations about the specifications, is the screen real 800x600? If the Omni out you still hold your Athena or you'll change it?
Sorry for many question, but i like to buy a new device (Since I sold my Alpine, and being cheated coz I bought a refurbish of Universal) my budget is only about US $1200 for one device, so if I buy Athena I won't able to upgrade to omni again.
Any sugestion? I miss vibrate, keyboard backlit, earphone piece from athena, but overall how do you think?
Thank you in advanced...

there are a few thing i am sure of, first, OMNI does exist, it will be out in Q3, and yes screen is 800x600. i can not get other spec to be confirm so i would say it's a bit early to compare Athena and Omini right now. Anyway, i think it's likely i won't go to Omni because of the big screen of Athena, this will depend on people, but i feel like Athena is really suitable for me

Hmmm

What the reason so you feel if Athena suite to you?
Buy Athena / wait for omni/ buy Athena / wait for omni...

if you want the big screen, then go for Athena. That's all i can say at this moment, because the spec of Omni is not confirm. One thing you can be sure of is it doesn't have 5 inch screen.

Thanks

Ok... Thanks I'll figure it out..

Athena is a sole device and is not a successor then.... So Omni is going to be way better than Universal. I guess I will now cancel my pre-order of Athena and look out for HTC Omni. I already knew that HTC Omni and HTC Kaiser and HTC Atermis and all these other devices are there. And O2 XDA Flame. O2 XDA Atom Exec versions. Well all these devices are coming. I suggest you wait. I will go for the HTC Omni if it has better spec's. I am going to cancel my pre-order on HTC Advantage. Why is HTC Athena also called HTC Advantage? That sounds really dumb to me! I am cancelling my Pre-order on HTC Advantage right away.
Please let me know when HTC Omni is expected. I dont have my Universal anymore but I found it as a lovely device that met most of my requirements. Now I want something that meets them all and I have a feeling that Omni is just it! ^^.. well if the specs of HTC Advantage > HTC Omni then I will not cancel my pre-order.

firstly, Omni is not going to be out until Q3, so that is at least 5 months waiting. Second, spec of Omni is not confirm yet, all i know for sure is it doesn't have a 5 inch screen. It all depends on what you are looking for. I enjoy my Athena and will not change to Omni because of the smaller screen.
So think carefully what you are really going to use the device for, then decide.
BTW, Athena is the code name of this device, this is a tradition of HTC, they always name their device with a code name when in development. e.g. HTC UNIVERSAL
Advantage is the actually name of the device when it hits market, just like the DOPOD U1000 and T-mobile Ameo.

It'a about you, and what you want from device.
I think wu right, bigger screen on athena...
1. No vibrate: use bluetooth vibrate headset
2. No keyboard backlit, i think i wouln't use at total dark room

I think the prices of both devices don't reflect their value in relation to each other, but in relation to the rest of the market. Both these devices are (still) the top-end of the market and the prices reflect that. The specs of a universal are still worth the kind of money asked, especially if you compare it to a low-end ppc. As to the price of the Athena, if HTC asks any more it will be too expensive for people to buy. The device would then be more expensive than a dedicated UMPC with windows xp.

Universal vs Athena?...You cannot be serious?!!?

It's not until you own an Athena do you get to appreciate the reason for its seemingly steep price.
The Universal screen, sharp as it is, is seriously lacking now that I have experienced the Athena.
Universal is underpowered comapred to Athena (not noticeable in normal useage - but try something like opening several web pages simultaneously while playing music in the background and answering phone calls!). The Athena can do this no problem...it's a beast of a powerhouse.
The build quality on the Athena is the best I have seen on any Wm device...Period. Solid.
Best screen.
Athena can be used for serious work and serious entertainment. Movies are a joy to watch on this thing. No game yet developed seems worthy enough for this screen.
USB host works beautifully with external USB HDD and full USB keyboard and scrolling functionality of a full USB Mouse.
TV-Out is first rate and so is it's implementation.
Try using Remote Desktop on a 2.8" or 3.5" screen...just not worth the trouble. Now try it on the Athena...Wu and some others can report the UMPC like experience of using Vista or XP Pro via the 5" Athena screen.
Did I mention that the Athena looks great on a 42" LCD or Plasma screen?
No denying it, the Universal was and still is a great device and was ahead of its time 18 months + ago.....but it is no match by any means for the HSDPA enabled heavyweight that the Athena is.
Do I love the Athena? Hell yeah...as far as materialistic gadgets go...this one is the nuts.

Beautifully put and I fully agree

HTC Omni... What has happened to it???

Call me impatient.... but I haven't heard any further details regarding the release of the Universal replacement.
A lot of the sites that reported the specs of the Omni were claiming that it was going to be released in early 2007... Now its almost April.
Has anyone else heard anything more concrete? Maybe this was just a false rumour?
Alternatively, I think if they release it too late and it isnt that "special" it will probably have a hard time competing with the newer VGA devices coming out by imate and the Toshiba G900.
Any comments???
I agree I want to know too !
I just hope there is a successor !
Got this feeling the Athena (HTC Advantage x7500) may be the replacement.
Well over a month later now. Something new somewhere already?
specs for OMNI are mostly rumours on the net & there is no hard evidence, but then again XDA Flame which expected 2 B release on Feb 2007...remains unknown..
p/s: it's not a Uni replacement though..Uni still remains... yeah...!
Well I was just wondering if it was still in the works. The rumours were so specific and the HTC Advanced and HTC Shift don't seem to fit the bill.
Ah well I'm still a couple of months away from contract renewal so I can wait I guess
I gave up waiting and got myself another universal as an upgrade.
My original universal had developed a fault.
The good thing is the Unis have really come down in price. I mean its still got fantastic specs, although only having UMTS as opposed to HSDPA is slightly date, but hey UMTS is still good. Loving the VGA screen on my Uni
I never quite understood the price of these machines. T-Mobile was selling them for 450 euro while the others were asking close to 1000 euro for their version.
I looked at the Ameo the other day and it does look great. The big screen is amazing. But then the whole thing is big and I just want the keyboard really attached.
I want a new and slightly improved Universal (more memory, faster, GPS, screen on outside)

I feel the same way. If I am to replace my Universal with something as big as this, the keyboard should be built-in in CLAMSHELL design.
Yeah those are all very reasonable upgrades that would make the Uni better. Add HSDPA/HSUPA and a slightly thinner profile and it would be a great upgrade.
Does anyone know any sales figures for HTC devices per model?
With the popularity of the Hermes, is it even worth their while to concentrate on this type of device when the slide out Hermes style is so much more popular?
The more advanced the device is, obviously the more R&D it requires hence costing more to make. Maybe they didnt make enough profit from the Universal.
Maybe the Omni was just vapourware talk to "test the waters"???
The biggest thing holding back the Universal from higher sales I would have to say is its least liked "feature"... the huge size of it. This would again cost more in R&D to try and make it a smaller size.
Not talking against or dissing the Universal as I would have one of these over a Hermes anyday, but may just be food for thought.
Any thoughts, objections or agreements?
X.
Well seeing how they are coming out with the Athena and the Shift they must see the market for bigger devices with phone capabilities.
The phones in thich niche cost a fortune and there is almost no competition. So they probably have quite a nice margin on them.
Yeah I think it was just the cost that put people off the Universal. It was way too expensive at launch, even if it was the top dog with all the features.

Time to replace the Hermes! But what with? Your advice needed!

Hi all,
Like most people who bought the Vario II in the first week it came out, it is time the contract is up... so I am looking for a new toy!!
I was originally tempted to get the Toshiba G900 before it came out, but the lack of a transflective screen, 3G-only, and the "won't wake up" problem were TOO MUCH for me to take! Even though it has nice resolution.
Kaiser sounds nice but it isn't really a very big step forward from the Hermes... yea its got better graphics and a built-in GPS, but not much else really. Not even a VGA screen. Probably not worth shelling out £500 for.
The E-Ten X800 (originally X500+) in theory is a very good candidate, but it is still not out!! Same with iMate's Ultimate series.
So what should I do?
Is the Touch worth the money?
Or should I go iPhone?
Or just keep the Hermes for another year...
Any advice welcome!
Thanks.
I'd keep the Hermes until something a little more revolutionary comes out.
But this did catch my eye the other day. Pretty much comparable to the Hermes (datawise, camera, etc.) but it's still not a big jump up from the Hermes if at all. But it does have a form factor I prefer (QWERTY always accessible without the flipping and rotation juggle).
http://www.mobileplanet.com/d.aspx?i=147071
Until the iPhone gets GPS, 3G, real OTA sync (Exchange or otherwise) and 3rd-party apps, it just can't compare. It is a joy to use and pretty to look at, but the functionality is way thin coming from a Windows Mobile, BlackBerry or even Palm device.
The new Nokia with the clamshell keyboard design and the keypad on the outside looks intriguing. However, if you're in the US, not sure if it supports US 3G bands.

I was going to replace my Hermes with the Kaiser, untill i noticed there is no LED flashlight. Horrible. I happen to use it as a regular source of light in various conditions with VJcandela. So i guess i'll just have to wait untill the Kaiser comes with a flashlight...

iphones suck... aside from the beauty factor. functionality wise, they cant hold a candle to the hermes or kaiser.
Yea I know, and so does iPod.
I bet there will be a shortage in the Europe and some general iPod-fanatics who don't know much except hair-care products will pay any price to get it.
This is UK not US so there is no AT&T lock-in.

pretty good business decision. you can probably sell it for twice what its worth. thats what happened here when people were dying for the iphone.
worthy upgrade
man,
i think u should go for something like the sony vaio UMPC.
or maybe the HTC OMNI when it comes out(it's sexy )
i'd upgrade when something similar to HTC universal comes out with 5" vga/better screen, vista ultimate ,80 gigs(ok, i'll settle for 40 for a start) and a truckload of connectivity options..(much like a tablet pc, but with UNIVERSAL form factor)
Yea I've got my eyes on the OQO UMPCs, because they have good transflective screens... but I have way too many gadgets already!
Vario II, XDA IIi, Nokia 770 (internet tablet), desktop, HTPC, rackmount home server, ITX automation server, car PC, home laptop, work laptop... not sure what I am going to do with an UMPC really!
Instead of the OQO, I'd wait for the HTC Switch. Looks like a much better package than the OQO2.
It's almost feeling like keep the Hermes for another year - all the other stuff (including the Omni) just looks too big - I was put off the universal because I felt it looked terrible.
Hermes just about has it all...
...although if a Treo came out with wifi and as loadsa ram...I might be tempted back...

Tech and Os specs would be great !

I am using Hermes (AT&T). Was very tempted to get Kaiser. And I've been saving money for Touch Pro.... I really hope they will make Touch HD Pro with a slide-out keyboard and normal audio jack (not a mini-USB).
P.S. iPhone sucks!
looks good, kind of like the omnia. and actually, the iphone doesn't suck.

If they ever release a CDMA version i'm getting one. If it has a capacitive touchscreen, i'll be in heaven.
I so want that, I posted earlier and now when I`ve seen specs etc. it looks promising.
I might upgrade my Kaiser to that when time comes
As nice as the phone looks to be, I can't help but say I'm disappointed in HTC. I feel they are oversaturating the market with products and not allowing any one phone to have some sort of longevitiy. This phone makes the Diamond the new Touch Cruise and the Touch Cruise the new Touch. Over time people will realize that if you wait a few months something much better is going to come out from HTC, so you may as well wait for it.
This is really shocking to see so soon after the Diamond, which really hasn't even had a chance to peak in the market if you ask me. Any potential sale they were going to have with the Diamond is probably gone now. HTC needs to consolidate their offerings to put out better spec'd equipment and to give people their money's worth.
But still, nice phone.

I kinda feel the same way. I was just getting ready to upgrade my Sprint Touch for the soon to be released Touch Diamond, but then I see this which is just about perfect for my needs.
I'll probably still get the Touch Diamond for now and plan to upgrade next in 2009 to a WM7 device, well unless this gets a capacitive touchscreen then it'll have to be mine.

Well, it is still in the support pages, so I guess it is discontinued.

For what its worth - as much as I like mine, it just didn't find its place. It was too "weak" to be a full featured UMPC, and way to big to be a portable smartphone. The funny thing is, I have never used mine on a cellular network (got it from CompUSA's firesale), and as a PDA it does well... but how many people want to buy a $600 pda....
Sad to see it go w/o a viable replacement. Love mine!
I predicted this a long time ago because of very low sales of the X7510. It does not surprise me anymore. I just hope Samsung or Sony make more Windows Mobile phones, because I am staying away from HTC after my X7510.

check the specs of the Omnia II, will ever Samsung make something like that with Athena size screen an ill be there in a wisp, even as it is the screen is not that small.
Also a launch so early after Omnia I gives me the impression that Samsung launched the firs as a test product, whatever the case i believe that Omnia II is only available in Japan ATM.

I would expect the next version of Athena to come off the Qualcomm Snapdragon platform.
Snapdragon Platform is the ideal one to build the next Advantage.
There are already 30 devices under development to support this platform. Hopefully we get a new announcement on this by 1st half of next year.

New Athena is coming out.Check the link below:

I just hope that the leaked information from HTC about new Athena is real, as I love mine and a new version with (hopefully) 800x480 (or more) screen, faster CPU and maybe even usable graphics acceleration would be really nice...
I hope it's true too. I hope they do put in the new NvDIA processor, and I hope they use a faster processor than 624.

Should i buy a Blackstone?

Hello to all
I want to buy a new pda, cause my Diamond is getting slow, but i don't know witch one to buy.
I like Blackstone but i don't know if it's fast with the new rom's and so, or after buying i will regret it.
I know there are new models and so but were i live they are too expensive, so i have to stik with the older ones
Please give me your feedback.
With the coming of windows mobile 7 and nvidia tegra chipset i predict huge technological leaps in the terms of ppcs by late 2010 so if you can wait a few months i believe you'll be rewarded...
As for blackstone, i wouldn't recommend it personally although i have one and currently love it. I'd save money to get something better by mid-late 2010. Time flies
The original ROM is quite fast, but not very advanced. If you install a custom rom a lot of new functions come availible and the speed stays the same. You can also go for nice eyecandy, but then you will end up with a littlebit less speed.
For you to decide....
the Diamond is alomst as fast or as slow as the blackstone.
so i do not recommend you to buy a HD.
I also had a Diamond and changed to Hd.
It has a bigger screen, that is all.
But this is only my opinion.
Good luck.

Buy HD2, em 12x sem juros.
+1 for the Touch HD2
If you're going for a Windows Mobile phone, that's the one to get.
The HD has the same CPU and RAM as many other HTC phones, the difference is the 3.8" screen (bigger than any other phone on the market except the HD2).
I use WM 6.1 (topix 3.1.2), I found WM 6.5 and Manilla 2.5 too heavy for this hardware. I do not benefit from a colourful and animation-intensive device if it's slow (like using XP vs Vista on a computer with 1 GB of RAM).

I think you are spot on there. I agree with what you say and even though I currently own a Touch HD, I would also love an Touch HD2, especially for the release of Windows 7 but the price is a big factor. I think it's wise to wait until later this year for the release of other PPC devices that will be competitors to the Touch HD2 and see what they are capable of offering. In my opinion, buying a Touch HD now at this point in time would be a step backwards.
Regards.
In my job I make full use of the 'pda' capability of my trusty Touch HD, and I have been a pda user since the very early 1990s. In terms of upgrading, you just need to ask yourself what you will be using it for! Had to hard reset my Touch HD recently and was very choosey about what software I put back on afterwards. I was really surprised how much faster it was. Easy to be seduced by the impressive HD2 but clearly 2010/11 is going to see some REAL reasons for upgrading from anything that does just about all you want now. Be patient and you are bound to feel your hard earned cash will have been well spent.
hmm, HD isnt much over the Diamond, its essentially the same device with a large display, its a wonderful phone and if you had asked me 6 months ago id say go for it but there is no point just now, too much around the corner later this year, at the very least if you cant afford a new PDA you will find the blackstone price drop and thus save you some cash.
dont get a HD especially on contract as the price between the HD and the HD is not significantly large to warranty bypassing the HD2.
Waiting, thats another discussion altogether, nobody really knows what is coming out and when but if u look at how the market works you will see only slighter better phones trickle out, you wont see major steps i believe. Even if a tegra phone coming out they will find some way to handicap it, perhaps reduced codec support or lack of TV out or something like that.
You really only have three choices I can see, 2 if you discount the nexus if you have concerns about android, Iphone or HD2, iphone if you are not a big tweak fan but you like everything to work well and fast, HD2 if you like speed but love to tweak, then again if you didnt you probably wouldnt be on XDA
The HD2 is ridiculously priced atm though unfortunately. Here's hoping to it dropping down fast into non-business user land.

If I have been given a chance to get a new phone, perhaps it would be the HD2 or the Nexus One (Android) the prices of these phones are just the same as my HD when I bought it last Nov 2008...but the hardware specs have been improved

Agreed, prices are the same as when the HD first came out if not cheaper in some places due to market competition being more fierce now then ever before.
If WM7 doesn't excite you then go Nexus.
