Micro Drive...data transfer problem!! - Advantage X7500, MDA Ameo General

Hi guys and gals.
I only have 2 more issues with the Ameo at present, then I'm a happy camper.
1) Video playback (will start a new thread after some serious investigations and various setups have been explored).
2) This is a big one, but maybe I'm doing something wrong. I'm having serious problems moving large items of data to the MD via ActiveSync (AS). Not only is it damned slow, but it seems to start and then stop transfers of data if a file is big,...like a 700Mb DVD rip or even a 250Mb movie in any video format.
The only success I have had in that area is to transfer these files to SD card and then move it to MD afterwards...and that is evn slower than through AS!!
It is very frustrating for me as the 8GB is one of the major features for my intended use of the Ameo.
I am now trying to break down amovie into smaller chapters to see if I can transfer it that way, but this is ridiculous and should not be necessary. I've had a Micro Drive WM smartphone before but that was working just like mass storage device and gave no problems.
So I suppose the logical question is...is there any way to get the Athena to be recognized as a mass storage device? I've checked the CD's and there is no such software for it there. I've read the manual and that only states that data is transferred from PC to Micro Drive via useless Active Sync!
Hope someone else has a workaround for this, or maybe it's just my device or PC setup??!!
In any event there is another niggling problem in connection to this;
If moving large photo albums via Active sync, I have to make all files (hidden) to be seen in order to delete any 'database' file relating to the photos, else AS rejects the whole data transfer once it sees these automatically XP generated database files.
Once these files are deleted (do not re-enter the folder was you've deleted the database file else another one is generated!!) the transfer goes ahead smoothly...even if you have hundreds of photos in one folder.
Anybofy else experience this, or is it just me?

In the wm2003 environment, I used to have this utility called softick card export, whic allows the active sync to be bypassed and the unit recognised as a usb mass storage device. I used to port over my wikipedia (about 2.5GB in size for one sigle file) over with this.
However, my impression is that the WM5 version is not ready yet. I'm still looking for some equivalent product, or to wait for the WM5 version of softick.

Thanks for the reply eaglesteve, but we got that sorted a few weeks ago by using WM5torage. Not as good as the Softick concept (as it doesn't rely on AS drivers), but it will do for now, as some people have also reported problems with the card export software under WM5 based Athenas.

Universal to be recognized as a USB Mass Storage in Windows

Read this article:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/wceintro5/html/wce50conWhatsNew.asp
It confirms that WM5 has the USB Mass Storage driver built in, means without any additional software, we can use the storage card in WM5 device just like a USB pen drive/external HDD. This is very useful to connect the device in PCs without ActiveSync installed.
Does anybody know how to make the Universal to be recognized as a USB Mass Storage in Windows OS?
The DLL usbmsfn.dll is missing from the Exec's ROM - without that you'll not have much joy me thinks.
Hopefully much faster to
With no wifi support in activesync this may be much faster.
I find it a real pain transfering video files to my mda pro over activesync so slow
Can it be ripped from the device emulator or someone else's WM5 ROM?
RE
Does the Universal requires hardware-ready for USB hosting besides the necessary drivers?
No, pls don't be confused with USB host capability.
This is not related to that. The USB Mass Storage function is basically the capability to emulate the Universal so that when its plugged to a USB port of a PC, the PC will recognize the Universal as if its an external harddrive/USB pen drive/card reader.
If you use an external harddrive/USB pen drive/card reader to transport files you should be familiar with this. The benefit is that you do not need any driver for the drive to be recognize by Windows OS (starting W2k).
I myself, everytime I want to copy big size files like MP3 or movie to my Universal, I will take out the SD Card and insert it to the card reader then copy the files as its slightly faster to do so rather than using the ActiveSync.
The idea is that, with the USB Mass Storage driver that is built into the WM5, we do not need to take out the SD Card and use a card reader anymore. Just plug in the Universal and the PC can access the storage card directly with full speed.
Though this is definetely WM5 feature, but not really sure if this is implemented in Universal specifically. If anybody knows, please share.

Hate to burst bubbles, but the originally referenced article is taking about Windows CE5, not Windows Mobile5. While WM5 is built out of WCE5, it does not support everything that the underlying OS does or can. WCE5 is a base OS that a number of products are based on including WM devices like SmartPhones and PPC, and automotive electronics and even vending machines. At this point I know of no native mass storage capability in a WM5 device. Not to say it can't happen, as Softick provided the capability for WM2003 devices. It's just not that way out of the box.
A laconic mail exchange with Softick told me that they are actually working on their cardexport product for full WM5 compatibility. No release date, no progress for now. Maybe if somebody want's to ask more?

Use an SD card reader, or try transferring over a wifi network using a network shared folder using resco explorer.
Brilliant, trust me!

Tested Working on Universal.
WOW. This is good news!
after installing it, the device hangs. I unplugged it and reset it manually. And it works. Really cool! I noticed the speed is not as fast compared to a card reader. Anyway, I'm happy that now I do not need to carry around additional thing, SD card reader, just to transport files.

Sweet Software....
I install it (2.10), it keeps staying at the display when it is loading the bar and then it says that it cannot load it self...
Afterwards it uninstalls automatically...
I have Qtek ROM...
I've installed it and it works great on my Qtek 9000 (Universal). I only turn on de mass storage when i really need it, but then it works great to tranfer files from and tot every PC (no ActiveSync install needed).
I am trying to install V2.10 on my Universal and get the following:
On installation an error:
"ActivateDeviceEx" and "Cannot Load Drivers\BuiltIn\CE2. Code 2"
The install then says "Cannot Start Card Export" and "Card Export Installation Failed" and uninstalls itself.
Did a registry search and cant find any reference to that in the regisrty.
Anyone with any ideas or if they have that in their reg can they post the details!
Cheers!

That's the same message I get!!! I have the same problem in My Qtek too...

Micro Drive Data Loss

Hi, my micro drive keeps coroupting, it happen a few days ago were it said there was no space left although it was only half full, I looked in it with file exploror, all the file and folder names were coroupt. I then hard reset and formated the drive and back to normal then the same happened today, I noticed as Live search kicked up and error on startup so I looked in exploror and all the file names wee croupt and no space soft reset and I've lost 90% of my data on the drive bt it says in setings -- memory that I have about 50% free space (what there should be if all my files where there) but I can't access them does anyone have any ideas how what bor why this is happening?
Pocket Mechanic
I have had this problem ones. I was defragmenting my MicroDrive with Pocket Mechanic and I think that it went corrupt when somen huge files were defragmented. I did a low level format wit Pocket Mechanic and since ten I did not have this problem. I have read that you could also try to format the MicroDrive with WMStorage with your desktop. It works better than te format function of the Athena itself.

um....HTC Advantage seems to have a higher chance for this to happen, i have heard someone said there is some recall on this device, but still i can't get that confirm from the official. All i can say is don't put your important data in MD, install all your extra programs to SD not MD.
I use my MD to store music, movie and photo only.
I heard that HTC released later it's X7500 just to solve some problems with microdrive occurred on Ameo. That's very strange. How ever it's really tragic if I cuoldn't use micro drive for important document storage. It's one of the main reasons why I bought it...

you should really save your application on sd card, because it will save you more battery, yes MD does run faster but i have heard at least 7 user now report they have file loss or MD issue, so you should try to avoid saving important doc in MD. i have never heard people report that file loss in sd so it seems to be a better place for storing important data
Ive been reading posts on other threads in the forums, and it appears some users have had the same issue with SD cards on other devices, Although knobody has Id's the problem yet.

some had problem with SD? you mind posting the link? i have read through all the post in Athena, don't seems to remember someone mention this
Well, on my Dopod U1000, I have twice experienced the scenario whereby my miniSD shows gibberish characters in File Explorer. I have to soft-reset my device in order for things to go back to normal. I still have no clue what could have gone wrong as I have only installed MapKing and pRSSreader on the miniSD.
Anyway, one of the things I will do this weekend is to reformat the miniSD on my laptop.

personally, i will suggest you to install app in SD, tomtom map should be in SD as well, this way you can save more battery. Store only music and old and movie on MD. These file are large so they should be in MD , and if MD is loss, these data are not important as well, you can transfer again from computer.
Now for the new photo you take by the camera, store them i n SD, organize them then you can store a copy in MD.
Follow the above suggestion, you should then have no problem with all your files, app and data, and it gives you a longer usage time as well

Is this right - My MicroDrive takes longer to do a file listing in File Explorer than the memory or an SD card?
Also, I seem now to have developed a MicroDrive directory and my MD is now called MicroDrive2. The only thing in the MicroDrive directory is an empty directory for email attachments. How could this have happened?
@wu5262
I will follow your suggestions, so I will HR my device and format microdrive and MiniSD as well. Any news about 4gb MiniSd support?
PS I will leave in july...I hope WM06 upgrade will be available as soon as possible...maybe should I wait for it before Hresetting?
About MicroDrive format do I follow procedure within Hreset, when it asks to do Hreset and MD format both?

No - I did ask Outlook to store attachments on the Storage Card (before I had inserted an SD card). I wanted attachments to be on the MD.
Also, I've just noticed I have a directory for attachments on my MD as well!!! I have no idea what is going on.
Do I have to hard reset? (I'm beginning to think my Universal was a lot easier to live with!!!)

wm6 Upgrade isn't coming that soon, no official date yet. All we know is summer, and usually there is a delay. I am using transcend miniSDHC 4GB, it works well on my machine, no problem at all.
When you hard restart, it will ask you whether you want to format the MD, just click yes. I have heard other people saying using other tools to format MD is better, but i have had no problem with the default tool in our machine
I've had the same problem. Won't make the same mistake twice.
I tried to defrag the HD with Pocket Mechanic but it found errors on the HD. So I ran scandisk. Scandisk fixed the problems and when I went back to defrag it locked up and programs wouldn't run and I lost data. Just sucks.
I have since installed all programs to my 4gig miniSD card and am only using the HD for temporary storage.
Hope this isn't an ongoing problem because I paid a lot for this device.

well, we are not really talking about Hermes here, i think the issue is a bit different here, since the MD issue happens more often on the HTC Advantage until instead of others, and personally, i think the Athena's ROM is far more stable then Hermes.

Files on mini SD card disappear! Please help!!

The weird problems happened to my Dopod D810 twice.
The first time: The whole file system on card went crazy with all folder names became gibberish (like: &%*()jhui&%^&&!#%&). After a soft reset many folders disappeared, a few folders remained but became duplicated but many files inside were not readable (e.g there are two identical folders named My ebooks).
I thought it might be card-related and I hard reset, formated the card, and re-installed all softwares.
Today it happened again but differently:
- I had some video files in Storage card\My Documents\My Videos folder like this ... video_28.mp4, video_29.mp4, video_30.mp4
- After a video shot, I opened Resco Explorer to check and to replay but all folders and files previously in Storage card\My Documents disappeared. Other folders and programs on the card were still intact and ran fine
- I tried shooting another few video clips (with option saving to card, of course). They all disappeared after shooting.
- But the weird thing is: After shooting, I chose the preview option and WMP played the file well. I paused the playing, check the properties of the now playing file and it showed clearly: Storage card\My Documents\My videos\Video_33.mp4
But in File Explorer and Resco explorer the Storage card\My Documents is absolutely empty despite the file IS BEING PLAYED in WMP
- I tried again and again, the video clips preview were always named in sequence like video_34.mp4 then video_35.mp4, .... but they all mysteriously disappeared.
What is wrong? Has anyone experienced the same problem? Is that a hardware failure (writing-to-card)? Should I send in for repair? Please help! I have some important clips that I really want to keep. Is there any way, any tool to help recover the files that are probably still there?
Do you have another miniSD to run some tests?
This could give you an idea of what is going wrong?
The miniSD could be malfunctioning.
Regards!
Apparently, you are a new user here...
The Trinity has a hardware problem that HTC can't still fix by now. Go search for some posts. There is currently NO solution available - you may try cards with smaller capacity, or you do some preventive measures, such as install SD Sentry.
I have found that rebooting without the card in and then putting it back in sorts this out. Also I am attaching fixes from HTC and others which stop minimise this happening. Finally, it is suggested you use the Sandisk MiniSD Ultra II cards instead as they have a faster transfer rate. These are available on Amazon for about 15 UK pounds.
Hawk
Damn it! They're gone
Thanks for all the suggestion.
I did reboot without the card then reinserted it but didn't help.
The card is Kingston 2GB
@Nighthawk2050: what does the first patch do? the second patch seem to be for another set, not Trinity?
@WW2250: what does SD Sentry do?
I bought a Transcend card reader, but could not recover any video files.
The card reader however showed the My Videos folder containing only one last video clip.
It also showed 4 other folders which report error when clicked on

/p300p1..gif (two dots) with a reported size of 1,838,093 KB
i/p320p1..gi with a reported size of 789,709 KB
I think with a faulty product like this, I have the right to return it (to Three Australia - a 3G provider)
I think they only have one other 3G set which is the Dopod 838 Pro
Please advise if the 838 Pro has any similar problem (or other potential problems)?

First patch (miniSD HC Patch.cab) don't work....download the new one from the official thread (anyways, it work only on LVSW's ROM v2.0.1.1 and on AX3L's ROM anyversion) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1341004#post1341004
Second patch (ArtemisSDEnhancement.CAB) is only for ARTEMIS, not Trinity
Try Panasonic SD formater for format your SD card.

The first patch might not be working for WM5, since it was originally extracted from Hermes WM6 ROM. But you mileage may vary.
SD Sentry is a program written by a Spb developer, who had exactly the same problems of you (for his Artemis though). At that time, there was no fix available from HTC. So he wrote that little program to check constantly for indications of SD card corruptions, such as missing files or folders, screwed up file and folder names, etc.
If such indications are found, it offers you a warning and an option to reboot such that you won't be doing further damages to your card writing to it in an already corrupted state. If you reboot in time, you can yourself a day before it wreaks havoc.
For details, you may want to visit his page at http://www.nixie.narod.ru/sdsentry/index-en.htm
BTW, there was an official fix from HTC for Artemis, but none is released for your precious Trinity, AFAIK.

Don't know for sure for 838 Pro - but it seems to me that this problem is a special free feature from HTC for newer devices like Artemis and Trinity. Besides this issue, I think it's not worth to go back to 838 Pro since it's an older device, slower, and has different sets of problems by itself.
I read extensive from the Artemis forum - and from there I learn that they have a worthy workaround that you may want to try: Don't ever press the power button - let the power save timeout take care of shutting down the machine when not in use.
Their theory is that there's a problem with the HW/OS that interact with the SD card whenever there's a power event, probably lies in the cache or the controller, creating corrupted filesystem data, when unfortunately being actually flushed to your card, would actually inflict real damage. So, if you get strange card suddenly disappear errors, strange filename folders, etc... you'd better reboot it immediately.
Removing the card and re-inserting it seems to reinitialize the driver and will probably revive your card too, but I'd say reboot it is your best bet.
Looks like you now need some software recovering tools to savage your files from your already damaged card. Grab as many as you can recover, re-format the card, and install SD Sentry.
I thought Dopod 838 Pro (Hermes 100) is more or less the same as a Trinity with a keyboard and without GPS?
Anyway, maybe I have to stick with this Trinity for now.
About SD Sentry: another program, would it further slow down the phone?

It's incredibly light-weight. I even forgot its existence once installed and configured. It never get into your way unless absolutely necessary - when your card get corrupted
Hope it helps.
Hmm maybe its only my trinity but I observed everytime all the SD data is lost is when I use the internet explorer to download and install something onto the ppc.I've done downloading Flash player 7 from my ppc internet explorer and after a soft reset the sd data is also lost.tell me if I am wrong pls.maybe we can avoid it by not using the ppc i.e. to download stuff and intsall it
if you can reproduce it every time exactly, then it's good. Record the exact procedure and tell HTC about it. I read the guys at artemis forum did that and get a fix from HTC.
I want to do that but I just couldn't reproduce it.
Hello,
same pb with me. Pretty anoying...
I saw that i'm sharing this pb with several people. but doing a wide search on google doesn't give the impression that every body has this pb.
Is it a hardware pb, should I take in back for repair.
Does a WM6 upgrade would solve it ?
thanks for your help.
It's indeed annoying especially when you got nothing left in the card. I don't know about the scope of your search in google - but it's a pretty big problem here in this forum - definitely not limited to Trinity or Artemis.
I am sure not everyone encounter this problem - since it's quite related to write i/o activities to the card. Playing music with media player count as one - since it updates (read: writes) the DRM files in the card automatically whenever it is running; people who use camera reported corruption; and the original poster who downloads and installs cabs on the card.
It's definitely a hardware + software problem, which might be able to get fixed by a software driver patch, but only after HTC has identified the root cause of the problem. That's why I asked s4cr3d to report the bug to HTC if he has a recipe to reproduce the bug step by step.
Take it back for repair? Forget it. WM6 doesn't seem to resolve it as well. I read someone with WM6 (cooked) still have this problem. Don't know about the official rom.... yet.
thanks for your answer. need to wait then... still great device...
I'm using AX3L's ROM v2.0.8 and I must say the SD problem affects WM6 cooked ROMs too. It seems to me that it has something to do with software/hardware incompatibilities.
The specs are as follows:
- Corsair 2GB MiniSD
- AX3L v2.0.8
- AX3L ExtROM v2.0.5
The problem started when I used Resco Explorer's built-in unzip tool to unzip a file onto the Storage Card. Everything went ok until I opened up "Storage Card" and went, "where's the My Documents folder?". In a spectacular twist, I managed to corrupt the card (thru formatting, re-formatting again and again) and now it's dead. I used Panasonic SD Formatter, formatting in Linux, etc. and they weren't much help. My word of advice is to store everything safe in your computer the moment you see disappearing files because it might just go downhill from there.
I strongly believe it is Resco Explorer but I cannot verify this cos' I don't wanna screw up more cards.
I have since bought a Sandisk 1GB card and reflashed AX3L v2.0.8 without the ExtROM (and so, no Resco Explorer). It might be the card, it might be Resco Explorer but I have had no problems since (it's been 10 days now).
Anyway, hope this helps someone in some way. Will definitely try the SDSentry program just to be absolutely safe. These cards don't come cheap over here..

[Question] Access PDA through network drive ?

Hello,
I'm looking for an easy and convenient way to access my HTC Trinity through a mapped network drive on my XP SP2 PC. The device is connected to a PC through ActiveSync.
I know there are 3rd-party solutions like Resco or the WinCE Device plugin for Total Commander (which I use already), but my intent is to be able to access the device's memory -- specifically, the storage card -- through a simple mapped network drive or equivalent.
The purpose is to allow a scheduled simple .bat script to download and upload specific files from/to the device's storage card.
I hope somebody can help
Thanks a million in advance,
--Clandestino
I second this request. Its a pain having to stick the SD card into a card reader and then into a USB port to gain access to the files via a PC, and to get a rate of file transfer that is more acceptable than the transfer speed of Active Sync (slow death).
Being able to access the storage card directly off the PPC via a PC would be great and save the hassle of having to pysically take the card out, as outlined above.
Hope this idea comes to life.

Take a look over here!
With this tool you can use your PPC as a cardreader.
Thanks -- I'm already using WM5Storage, but for various reasons it doesn't fit exactly what I'm looking for. Furthermore, it sometimes hangs the PDA and I have to soft-reset it, so until it becomes more stable, I wouldn't rely on that method.

Need a HTC mentor...

Hi,
I just bought a HTC HD2 (Leo). I've looked around in all the forums and can't find the info I'm looking for plus all the answers to all the other questions I have.
My first question is, how can I save directly to the SD card instead of the phone memory? I've looked everywhere to find an answer to that and I've even contacted the HTC support (in Sweden) but no luck. Does anybody know? Is it possible? I have a ton more questions, but I can only ask one at a time, if i understood the rules correctly.....
Sorry, but what are you trying to save, an example may help. Usually you are asked where you want to save something. Also treat yourself to Resco Explorer at some point. Makes working with files so much easier.
For example, when I send files from my old phone (photos, music etc.) it just saves it on the phone memory. It fills up my phone completely and at once. I had to move the files to the SD memory but everything didn't fit on the phonememory. I don't get any question where I want to save my files. Is there any way (that someone knows about) where I can change that? And thanks for the tip about the download, I will check that out! And I can't whatch divx movies on my phone - any tips?
Hmmm, see I used Windows Media Player to sync music and photos and it gave me the option where to sync to. I guess the problem is if you are going direct from Phone to phone you aren't getting the same level of configuration.
I believe Coreplayer is for DivX.
Free DivX layer here
Thank you for the link!! Been looking for that one. Since I'm new to windowsphones, do you know of any link (tutorial) where I can learn how to install coreplayer (and other apps - like flash and others)?
Things will either come as Install packages that are run from your PC while the device is connected via Activesync or WMDC. Alternatively applications are downloaded as .cab files which you stick somewhere on your storage card and run them from within File Explorer.
Thank you for helping a novice out! I'm gonna try it out!
