Prophet --> Charmer similarities. intriguing find. - MDA Compact II General

hey all
I recently got my charmer back from HTC, it was refusing to read memory cards. in the slip that came back with it, it stated that they had replaced the mainboard.
i promptly proceeded to open the device up (without voiding the warranty of course! ) and went and lifted up one of the 'RF plates' that is on the mainboard, found that, underneath that board, as with the previous (broken mainboard that i had before that wouldnt read memory cards) under that exact same RF shield was empty solder points.
now, i've noticed that the specs otherwise of the prophet and charmer are more or less IDENTICAL.
BOTH use the Omap 850 Processor
BOTH have 128/64 ROM/RAM
BOTH have same dimensions of 108 x 58 x 18 mm (HxWxD)
BOTH use same same 240x320 64k colour screen
differences are:
Prophet has WI-FI, Charmer does NOT
Prophethas 2.0mp camera, Charmer has 1.3
Prophet is available in G4 and G3 'flavours', Charmer has 'one type for all'
the reason for this thread is the following: I would like to obtain/install an AKU 3.x update for my Charmer as I have noticed considerable differences between AKU 2.0 and AKU 3.x on a different handset. mainly in that AKU 3.x looks considerably better, performs considerably better and is just generally a lot better than AKU 2.0.
my *theory* is: if i was to download a copy of the AKU 3.3.07 ASERG ROM update for the Prophet, REMOVE the bootloader section of the ROM update, and either:
1) Replace the bootloader with that from a Charmer ROM
2) ONLY flash the OS partition of the ROM
and then proceeded to flash the modified update to my Charmer, all i would like to know (and this is really a question to the Pro's)
would it
a) work, and be really really buggy like camera not working and stuff, or,
b) brick my device?
ANY help on this is appreciated. i would really like to get under development some sort of an AKU3.x update for the charmer. it is hideously under-developed! its a great little handset and a shame no other carriers carry the handset!
any and all help/advice would be greatly appreciated.and also, im learning! so dont be too harsh!
thank you.

only flash the OS partition. as long you have v2 bootloaders, just dont even touch them and you'll be fine. any prophet OS partition works on the charmer, problem is though that the camera does not work, not even a little bit and no matter how hard ive tried, i cant get it to. its also possible that the calendar and contacts buttons turn into start and ok buttons are not remappable, not even in the control panel.

hm. interesting.
i already have v2 bootloader on my device, how would i go about extracting the bootloader?
(dave, still no hope for a newer aku update for the charmer from the gods of xda-devs?!)

List of Known Defects on Magician

This is the time to write down ALL the bad things of this buggy PDA. I've encountered ALL of these, and have NO solutions to these, and I've tried ANYTHING.
I'm bored to have a PDA which colud be assembled and tested WAY better; but that is.
Note that mostly are device specific (huh, in my case I'm VERY lucky, I've encountered them all )
My Device:
1) doesn't wake up when cold
2) have BIG problems of RF leakage that caused
2.a) hard reset when registering network
2.b) degradation of the external speaker
3) has a crappy camera
4) has deficienty GPRS (now inaccesible because the RF leakage)
5) has by now damaged ExtRom with fixed Imate logo
5.a) this cause the warranty to Vanish. Puff!
6) has double incoming calls, that seems only I have
7) has a null customer care; expansys SUCK
feel free to add link that would resolve these prob... and other known mess of course...
From: MocciJ[/i]
Sorry you have so many issues. I have experienced none of those things with my JAM since May 2005. There was the GPRS issue with a certain ROM, but that has long since been resolved.
While I sympathise with your individual bad experience with your HTC Magician, this is not shared with most of the members/owners here.
I don't agree with the way you have numbered your complaints just to make the list look longer. This is because most of them are all related to one technical problem (RF leakage) and a bad attempt to fix this problem by installing other ROMS that has lead to more software problems.
I have to agree with you on the crappy camera one ;-) although by all means this is an average quality mobile phone camera and not a digital camera replacement.
You cannot blame Expansys' bad customer care on HTC either.
Bear in mind that the MDA Compact is one of the most succesfull PDA phones for huge carriers such as T-Mobile!
Sorry to hear that but that cannot be said of the magician in general. My Qtek ist working day in day out just perfectly and is by far the most reliable phone/pda I ever had, way better than Ipaqs and Nokia phones.
The camera is not that bad either. Once set up correctly (maybe you should do that) you can get some pretty good pics out of it after photshopping them a little and resizing them down to 640x480. They look far better than the one from my old Nokia 7610. Maybe the difference is that I dont expect the cam to rival the one of my 4megapixel Sony.
And HTC will never offer customer care because they dont sell the devices. If anything sucks here it is iMate. I never need Qtek support so I cant say anything about them.
What about the pros?:
- Its small and lightweight
- It has nearly all com modules except WLAN (can be added with SD-card like Spectec), and who need 3G/UMTS anyway?
- It has lots of power (esp when using PHM)
- It has a great screen, bright and hella sharp
- It sounds great (call quality way better than with the 7610)
- Its has massive RAM in the S110 version
- It is plain sexy
Yea..i agrees with others...frm the day i bought my xda mini..its not giving me problems so far....its compact and sxy too
Yeah me too.
My Orange SPV M500 works almost fautlessly. I don't really use the camera much but then I have a 'proper' digital camera for taking pictures.
I say 'almost' because sometimes, to use GPRS I have to reset the radio by going into and then out of flight mode.
It has to be said that this forum is littered with people who have tried to 'upgrade' thier PDAs by flashing the ROM and have come unstuck.
Yeah, I agree with you all, but now I have these probs. I upgraded it the first time to see if the "low temperature wake up" thing had resolved. I accidentally putted in the Imate ROM, because the ROMs on the FTP site aren't signed. After TWO months of QTEK "repairing" they said that the unit isn't repaired (they cannot upgrade the rom); after trying to contact those idiots by call and e-mail we finally had a transparent service.
After ONE week of using the RF leakage came... and made it. It somehow damaged the PDA. I assure that isn't a software problem, cuz I have tried 4 Radio Stacks: no solves.
I IMPLORE xda-developers to SIGN the ROMs that are placed in the ftp.
Hope U will understand me. I know that there are also good ones out there, but mine isn't. Sorry.
NB: the camera is awful in semidark and dark conditions: otherwise it can take relatively good pictures. AND after 2 week of use, I noticed that the video longer than 20 secs have distortion: and this before upgrading anything.
#by moccij
Ive had my MDA Compact, now flashed to Imate for a few days now and after numerous incompatibilty issues with applications, I have a rough idea what programs to steer clear from so no major problems. Thought I was having probs setting up my Orange GPRS connection but after realised that is wasny going to connect as out of credit.... Duh me, looking for techi reasons instead of obvious ones lol
Are you Evrae who used to make all the Symbian themes on mobile9?
My JAM is one of the best PDA/Phone I have ever had...
it's small, good looking and had it all ( except WiFi and KB )
and after proper tweaking and installing newer ROMs.. it's really fast.. stable, and extremely reliable...
I agree that camera sucks... but in good light conditions ( ie. outside in the sun light ) picture quality are awesome especially if you photoshop them... some of them are printable!!!
Video on the other hand is the best thing in this device... It's much more reliable than normal phones with cameras that can record video.. resolution is higher, and can record for unlimited time in AVI + MPEG formats ( + 3GP with a registry hack ) and this is much better to me than STILL Photos
anyway.... I hope you'll find solutions to your problems... search the forum for more info
cheers
Duke911,
I agree with you that the camera can take some wonderful pictures, and retouching them in pocketartist on the go is a very good thing. But I'm still in trouble with videos: the first 20 secs are ok but after these the video is flickering in a horrendous manner. Have tried anything .
But I'm still very happy. Even if my Qtek has half blowed up the radio, it remains a PDA: and what a PDA! WAY fast and stable, I only need resetting it when cold. A thumb up for this! I'm using it as a normal mp3 player with some great gamez to play...
Cheers,
MocciJ
MocciJ, why don't you install the original factory ROM and send it over at the service centre for repair?
As you said it's a very nice pDA but it's a pity that yu can't use it as a phone!
KTA, I've tried ALL methods to downgrade to the Qtek ROM or simply to have the Qtek logo. Simply I can't, because the upgrade process give me the error 113 when writing extrom... I've tried at least ten different ROMs without results... It seems to have damaged extrom
For the repairing center, I'd already send it; for half month I had no responses, the other half they tried to repair it without success. They said that I must pay 269€ for a new motherboard...!
Now that I'm in all these problems, buying another one is less expensive than repair it... The case is also scratched (even the screen)...
Do not support mumsms+!!!!!

Blue Angel II - Where is it?

Why doesn't HTC make a Blue Angel II?
It seems that many of us have other devices like Wizards, TyTNs, etc. but we keep hanging on to our Blue Angels. Why is this?
Is it the Big Screen (for me this is the biggest item)?
Is it the fast speed?
Easily accessible Battery?
Is it the Rugged Build?
It seems to me that HTC is long overdue for a Blue Angel II with the Following Specs:
1) HSDPA & HSU (whatever it's called)
2) High Res 3.5" to 4" screen
3) Keyboard (and maybe a mouse of some kind)
Size like I-Phone (maybe a little thicker with keyboard)
4) FM and AM Radio (AM for the older folks like me who listen to talk radio)
5) Bluetooth 2.0 EDR
6) Charges with mini usb
7) TV receiver also????
8) Can still play music when turned off.
The Omni has similar specs but there's not much data on it. It looks like a mini laptop which folds open.
What do you all think?
Because they are working on this!
HTC Shift and that is not all!
But you are right, BA is the top model!
Blue Angel rulesss
It really is amazing how I'm still sticking with my BA since it was released.
Every year I look around to find a PDAphone to replace the old fellow, but I have to realize, that there isn't a better one.
I would accept the same device with 640*480 and 3G/HSDPA
Been thinking about the Kaiser, but since WM6 is running on my BA now... =)
Why throw the good cash out the window?
Same thought here. Best money I've spent in BA!!

That will be a beauty, i would surely go for it. BlueAngle rules.
noob @ xda....but a loooong time BA user (Dec2004)
I love the BA...the only things it lacks are a good built in GPS & HSDPA/UMTS/EDGE (can never have enough fast options for net access). Even without these two things I still am able to use it to impress people (even iphone fanatics...no custom apps).
TyTN II looks good but the only thing that keeps me away is the sideways keyboard, I wish they would put out a TyTN II with a slider KB like the BA. Single handed KB is great when you really need to multitask...multitasking is the reason I got a HTC.
Rugged Build story: I dropped it from 5ft+ (I had it chest level & I am 6' 3"), on a SF sidewalk...it died..or so I thought took it back home and all that happened was the backup battery reset and once I synced it with my pc everything was back to normal. This wasn't the first time its been dropped so I figured it was time to get a new device, but the build is awesome in this. But since it was a hard reset I finally decided to put WM6 on it (thank you all the great xda developers here), now its faster and more useful.

and a 3.2 MP camera ...
I would sell my house to get some thing similar !!!
I love my Blue Angel ! 3 Years with me, never let me down.
I Love it! Blue Angel is the top for me.. Every time a look around for new PDA, look at new release from HTC, never found all i have in BA. Best thing - Size is exactly what a device like this must be! 3.7 display - not too big, not too small. I broke my lcd+touchscreen, replaced from e-bay, and I am still using it.
Don't like the idea of GPS in the unit. Better on Bluetooth - in your car mount BA don't have clear view to the sky.
Blue Angel II (if any) should not have key board.
I love my Blue Angel, after upgrading to WM6, I dont like to buy any other available in market.
I like Blueangel the way it is, but wanted it to have a better processor (520mhz would be nice), VGA Screen, Accelerated video, 3G and landscape keyboard.

That's right but I don't like it's design, only if there were buttons in the front.. And I think it's not video accelerated which is very important to me. Or is it ?
Hi,
I am not sure if it is videoaccelerated or not, but I can tell you that all applications I like work as good or better on my Universal as on my BA:
- Emulators
- TomTom
- TCPMP
The Universal is slightly bigger than the BA and one has to get used to the tilting screen.
On the other hand, it is much nicer to have the Universal in the back-pocket of your trousers than having then BA attached to the belt, where it get's hit by doors or other things, when you move to close to walls...
And believe me: the VGA screen is suberb!!!
Cheers,
vma
Same Here
BA is the best. Love it very much although i was given a gift of HTC TyTn.
E-TEN X800 or M800 seems to be my current candidate for BA replacement.
BA is a really good dinosaur. Hard to let it go.
However, remember that there are some awfully crappy things about it. It's not perfect.
- somewhat power hungry
- awful cradle connector
- audio out funtion in cradle connector newer worked for me (for any carkit)
- has confirmed hardware issue with buttons (loss of response - makes gaming hard)
- has crappy WM2003SE (because, face it... no WM5 WM6 ROM is stable and bug free enough)
I agree, that it's hard to find a decent replacement for it.
All model have too small screens...
Won't go back......
I checked out all the other models, older and current, before I bought the BA. I have a Wizard, which now resides in a drawer, only as a back-up, in case something happens to my BA. The only criticism I have of the BA is that they no longer manufacture it, so I too hope HTC comes out with something to replace it. From what I've seen of the newer models and what I read on this forum everyday, I'll stick with the BA.
BTW, robal, take a look at the rom I,m running. Since upgrading from 2003se to this rom, I have had 0 issues. It's fast, stable and battery life is acceptable.
i've since moved on from my BA to a hermes and now a kaiser......i miss my BA.
well BA has its design faults
1.the cable which connects lcd to motherboard is weak and after some sliding it cracks - this effect can be solved (extend the durability) with Polyethylene Foam Tape on the cable
2.after sliding there there are sme scratches below the hardware keyboard - repainting
3.the stylus pin (inside the device) which hold the stylus from falling off also cracks after too many usage - i fixed it with silicone (as i lost the pin) and it works fine over a year now
other than that the device is pretty solid and had no problems with it
most are the new WM problems but without proper drivers it is almost inpossible to be solved
in comparission with kaiser the BA has better video acceleration for the moment (this will change when the proper kaiser drivers are released)
What BA miss (the things i miss in it):
internal GPS
54 mbit wireless
better camera (2 mpix)
OpenGL ES hardware acceleration
larger rom space (32 mb right now if it was larger we can create more complete rom images for BA)
larger storage space 60 mb (everyone needs more space)
What BA miss (the things i do not miss in it):
3G/3.5G/HSDPA etc - high speed data connections - due to high proces of this types of connections i do not really need them
Video Call - the same as above
the CPU speed and the amount of ram in BA are enough for WM 6 and 6.1 even if it was released in 2004...
but maybe proper replacement is the Universal or the Kaiser (for now)
we will see what will happen in near future

I'm considering buying a TyTN...

Hi there. I've been a satisfied user of a SPV C600 for quite a long time. Now i'm moving to a touch-phone - TyTN, and therefore I have some questions. Are they (pocket pc phones) much less resistant than classic smartphones? Isn't the screen sensitive and easy to destroy? and finally, how is it practical comparing to a classic phone? And how it's with battery life?
I suggest you to buy the TYTN II (Kaiser). It has integrated GPS ;-)

The screens are not overly delicate, but you will need a protective case - don't just put it in your pocket. The battery life - just depends, count on charging it every day.
The phone functions differently from a pure phone. The phone menus and operations are via Windows Mobile. This gives some added functionality, but some folks would say it is a clumsier system than that of a pure phone.
My advice - if at all possible get a new TyTn or TyTn 2. There are many TyTns (original version) on ebay that have the screen alignment and white screen problems and there is no easy fix for either of these issues. The TyTn 2 is much less prone to either of these problems.
The original TyTn (Hermes) is apt to freezing and slowness. This is fixable with a bit of tweaking of the settings, a few registry changes and maybe even a new ROM. These kinds of things are what this site is all about and the help is here for that. Expect to spend time setting up a PPC phone - a bit like setting up your PC. So in this respect it's not like a more basic phone that is pretty much set up out of the box.
Mike
Yeah I know I'd need to set it up, I've had several palmphones before but never as primary phone (I have had only touchless smartphones as primaries). I'd buy a TyTN II but i haven't got that much money, (I don't need GPS, and I'd live with the 2 mpx camera, it's not that important for me) and I've bought recently a SPV M3100 for 109 pounds... still waiting to be delivered
and well - all that tweaking is what i love of WM phones I didn't have it on classic phones or even Symbian ones, and now I'm waitiiing ;D having a classic phone for several days and I must say I hate its simplicity!
palmphones - i mean PPC phones of course.
But Hermes isn't slow overall? I mean comparing it to an OMAP850...

My AT&T 8525 (U.S. Hermes) was quite sluggish and had the tendency to lock up several times a day and need to have a soft reset done in order to get it up an running again. That all changed when I flashed the official AT&T WM6 ROM that had come out. Since then, it has been very solid and rarely needs a soft reset. Very snappy, as well.
All I do whenever I have to hard reset due to tinkering, is spend a few minutes removing all the AT&T bloat that comes in the ROM, getting the used storage memory down to about 5-6MB before I start installing things. Works for me and is very stable.
you have bought a good little phone - im exactly the same, if i purchase a phone it will not be a classic phone.. it'll be a WM phone lol.
the hermes isn't slow at all (imo) i cant compare to the omap but im sure you'll like it once you find a fast 6.1 rom

Replacing Shift Radio board with another one Possible!!!

well i assumed that the board would be advantage because they both have spinning hard drive and maybe because i own an advantage will am willing to donate in the name of sience for such a cause other wise if someone who opened shift can tell us what he thinks of this as we can simpley replace that board with this one, the only 2 things that i assume would be hard is
2. the hardware button that switched between OS's
3. the sdcard slot, in which i assume with some soldering to unify the 2 boards it would work fine (hardware side but software i dunno

Its kinda funny how big companies always screw up their stuff...
PS3 = only 256MB ram
Xbox360 = No BT and WIFI
Willcom D4 = only PHS
Shift = Crippled...
sad sad, isnt it?
I would be lying if I say I havent thought about swapping the CPU and I spent hours searching for ram...
i gave up....now my machine is sitting there, waiting for the SHIFT PROJECT
yes your 100% right, but swapping CPU and Ram is harder than swapping a whole Radio Board, just think of it, any HTC (kaiser for example) just mount it in a place inside the shift (after freeying the old space takin by radio) and just figure out how to connect the display, even better since shift has vga, get an advantage or one of those htc with VGA out pout and connect it from within, this is defenatly a project am doing 365 days from now or the second HTC will have a product i will buy (in this case a none crippled SHift), the more input we get from those who have looked inside it and looked inside other HTC's, personally i know how does wallaby, himalaya, jamin, jasjar, advantage look like, i have opened all and usually this is what i do in anything get, the second i the warranty ware off i strip it down to learn
You can't do that. Take a look at the FCC pics and notice the board differences.
well i looked and didn't make any sense earlier but should it be housed exactly the same, would't any radio board that fits withen the space in the shift just do the job?
No, it's connected through a proprietary connector, which you don't have in any other PDA Phone. Also you're not taking into account the Embedded Controller which allows sharing the touchscreen, keyboard, etc, between both systems. See the attached pictures.
oh now that i didn't look at, the controller that would share those things together, though after seeing the board its a close reminder of qtek 1010 or qtek 9090, i assumed that display belt is connected through the MB and keyboard is input is through a shipset like advantage with just keys being remappted throught SW, that what would i do if i was HTC coz then this would just save loads of production line equipment, this is stupid though, SDcard is connected though radio board but works with Main MB, it means almost a year from now we actually might have a full usable mobile, what scare me though is the Bluetooth Shipset, where is located to your knowledge?, i know whats going to happen in the first few realeses, phone will be working only while vista is on to be able to use WIFI and BT for audio routing and VOIP from phone board, then slowly they will become independant again (i guess)

Ram isnt that difficult to swap. You can just get a different module, since its not soldered.
Unfortunately, there are only 512MB and 1GB modules commercially available, but give it time and you can purchase 2GB.
About the CPU, nowadays, CPUs are not soldered onto the board like on the VAIO T1 to T5 series. They are glued.
My mate is soldering prototype PCBs for a living. He showed me how he glues SMDs onto the board.
So, you can change them, but its risky to pop the chip off.
But then again, will the BIOS reckognize it? How about power consumption and heat dissipation....maybe not worth the effort.
after looking at the scheme i think other than the keyboard loss its pretty doable, they are completly seperate, other than the display, which i assume the red circled connector is the one for it, i also assume the black and white are for power, other than the keyboard nothing is connected (which i assume the green circled connector is what shares the keyboard and power on etc

Problems with built in camera

Hello
First i would like to mention that i went thru wiki and the forum and i could not find a thread with similar problems.
The problem is in the built in camera (or in the user)
As soon as i turn on the camera to take a picture it doesnt work. On the display the icons are showing like the camera is ready but it is just dark display.
So i pressed the button to capture an image just to see how will the camera react. As i pressed the middle cursor button after some 20-30 second on the display appeared following lines:
Unable to save captured image
unable to get data from camera device.

I must say that i have problems with the camera module from the very beginning. I was hoping that the latest flash with Tomals SW will improove the camera drivers but this was not the case. Maybe i have to install some additional drivers? I just cant get the bloody camera to work.
Anyone has some idea why my camera does not work?
Besize that my qtek is working just fine.
Thanks 4 the answers.
Best regards from Slowenia.
Peter

Try another ROM, just in case. Generally a factory ROM would give a good indication of whether there is a problem and eliminate other possibilities. So I would recommend flashing it just for your peace of mind.
As far as Tomal's ROM is concerned, provided your device is 128Mb and ROM functions as it should otherwise, one of the reasons for non-working camera is the module itself or the mainboard. Hopefully its the camera module, as they are relatively cheap and very easy to replace and no special knowledge is required, as well as minimal device intrusion, so you will be able to replace it yourself. I think i saw the camera module at some of my suppliers, let me check if still available, alternatively, a working second hand part can also be used, I might have one in my toy box somewhere.
Thank you so much. I will yet again update the rom and than i will report how it went. So if it doesnt work, i would be happy to purchase a camera module from you. Replacing it will not be a problem as i have no problem with the mechanics and electronics in general :-D:-D:-D
I also stumbled upon a DIY side in this forum, regarding the universal.
So which rom would you recommend me?
Thanks
:-D:-D

Factory ROM is the ROM your device came with originally, out of the box.

WM 5... as Uni came in with WM 5.... so in my case JASJAR.. and T-Mobile rom... is factory default for my 2 uni....
That could be a problem.
i have been given the qtek 9000 by my boss as he bought himself a tuch diamond pro and he gave me the qtek becouse he knew that i was so enthused about it. :-D:-D
Sadly the PDa came without any CD so factory rom is out of question. He somehow lost the CD so all i had was the phone, the usb cable and the charging unit.
try the wiki first!
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Universal_Upgrades
Otherwise, someone may have it. (I've got SPV M5000 if you're interested)
The wiki has only the country or operator specific downloads. Since i`m from Slovenia there is no operator or SW for our operator on the list.
So i probably need an english version since the qtek in our country c<me only in english version.
Just get WWE for QTEK, or try other WWE ROMs. BUT make sure you have the Slovenian settings on a .CAB or check if they can be sent by your provider.
Peter V8, don't forget to update the wiki if you find what you were looking for... and it wasn't in the wiki. 30 people will (not) thank you, but appreciate it.
As soon as i find the problem i will update it to wiki no problem. If the camera is broken and it need to be replaced i will document the procedure with photos that i will take during the "operation".
Sadly my battery bloated a little bit (no chemical spill so far ) and i took it out of my qtek to protect it from damage. So now i am stuck with nokia N90 until the new Battery arrives that i ordered. So when i will have the new accu i will find the error that the camera is having and report it to wiki and forum.

A battery 'bloated a little bit' means it got wet, which might mean liquid damage to your device and the reason your camera might not work. Even if you replace the battery at this stage, if the main PCB got wet, it will corrode and your device will die, slowly, but surely.
I am fully aware of this problem, but the new battery bloated (i replaced it 3 months ago) and the camera doesnt work since i have the qtek (1,5 year). The little white paper stripe under the sim card holder didnt turn pink and also the battery isnt wett also the phone is not wett. Well we will see when i get the new battery. It is under warranty so if the battery damaged my beloved phone, the company that sold me the new battery 3 months ago will not get so easy of it. Here in Slovenia a well preserved qtek 9000 still costs arround 250-300 Euros.
A little update:
I bought myself a newer working qtek 9000 with partialy broken LCD for 30 Euros. So i placed the battery into my qtek and it works perfectly. Apart from that i am still waiting for my brand new battery to arrive from germany. So i fully charged the spare battery, did a DOC reset and flashed the qtek with Tomals ROM.
The camera however still doesnt work, so it is not a SW problem. Since i have bought the broken qtek 9000 for spare parts, i will take the camera out and replace it. So probably this weekend i will do the "service" and i will take pictures of the procedure and update the forum.
Peter V8 I also face a similar problem since my 2 days Ebay bought 02 Xda Exec's camera is full of white, red, green dots either in photo or video mode. Changing roms didn't help at all and its truly a pity since the phone seems like it came straight from the factory, although used. My dilemma is either paying about 20 Euros to ship it back or waiting for your endeavor to complete but since I overall truly like the phone I will wait and see

There is really no procedure worthy of taking pictures, once you remove the back, remove the large white antenna part and you will see where camera clips in. It's a fairly straightforward flex clip connection.
Little update again.
As i mentioned earlyer, i have bought myself another spare parts uni with broken tft. Ok so first.....i took apart both unis (didnt took no pictures becouse the pdf DIY to disassemble and assemble the UNi is more than helpfull, so you have to be a complete non technical type of human, or you have cerebrall palsy, or you must be a dee tii deee to not understand or grasp how it is made) and puted the tft from my uni in to the spare part uni. It worked perfectly and it had WM 5,0 the original. So the camera worked , everything worked-sim card....everything. So yesterday i flashed the uni with Tomals last ROM (Tommal the rom is working perfectly on my other uni so the SW is just fine) And somehow the uni had problems to work when my SIM card was inserted. So i removed the sim card and the uni worked perfectly. I dont know wath the problem is (probably a sim lock or somethin, but odd enough it worked with WM 5,0) so as the forum was down yesterday, i just dissasembled both unis again, putted the tft back in to my uni and putted the camera which worked just fine in the spare parts uni, in to my uni. And guess what.............the camera is still not working. I have done the hardreset but still.........even as i replaced the camera i still have the mesage......unable to get data from camera bla bla bla.....error 36003:500:2
So there might be a problem with some drivers or something in that way. I am pretty on the end with my knowledge now. How can i find the erorr or the couse of it???
If someone knows i would be very happy uni user :-D
So the problem is still not solved. Otherwise the uni is working perfectly only the camera gives me hard time.
Best regards
Peter

seems like the problem is with motherboard rather than the camera...
