Bye Everybody! - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

I just got my hands on a HTC-Athena from a friend. It has no branding on it so I think its a prototype. It doesnt seem to be crashing or anything so I'm going to use it as my primary device. I will miss you all at the Universal thread...Thanks for all your help!

Before you go... perhaps you could tell us why you think you will like the Athena more than the Universal?
I've looked at the specs of the Athena and whilst it looks like a nice device i'm not sure it's a Universal killer (especiallly with the AKU3.5/Crossbow Roms now available).
Also, i think i would miss the keyboard much too much...
I'd be interested to hear your thoughts now you can play with both...

Possibly because it's faster, has a far nicer screen for browsing, supports HSDPA, tons of storage, better camera, and is based on a much newer version of WM6?
Keyboard is still there for desk use, I don't know what it would be like to use holding it though, but I use my Uni in portrait mode most of the time I am away from a desk anyway, so I thin kI would also prefer the Athena.

We can fix that easily. I give you my Uni for your Athena

Screen is better - really?
Wow, that's saying something as the Universal screen is one of it's best features. Unlike you though, i tend to use the keyboard a lot when i'm out and about...

Uni vs. Athena
Com'n guys! You dont even know how much it weighs! Well it's okay with the loads of features, but com'n would that go for a nickle?
Uni has proven to be among the best for those who know its value
Not to mention the size and attached keyboard. I guess you're gonna go around with the detachable keyboard and when needed, pull it from under your jacket, huh?
I guess it is not the time yet, just wait and hold your horses...

TRADE - My Universal for your Wizard?

Am thinking of trading my Universal for someone's Wizard. Was wondering what you guys think of that.
Thoughts?
Offers?
Thanks!
Cyb
Do it and dont look back.
Main reason? EDGE compatibility. Especially as your in the US.
Only thing the Uni has that I want over and above the Wizard is VGA. But I can live with the tiny QVGA screen on the Wizard. The VGA screen is the main reason the Uni is so sluggish anyway, as it uses the processor as its video controller instead of a seperate VGA chip.

I suggest you check the Pocket PC forum on HowardForums.com first. Quite a few people are extremely unhappy with their Wizards, while owners of Universals seem rather happy.

well I'm definately getting opinions! keep 'em coming...

Ferarri - BMW.. Not entirely true.
The Universal on its face is a good device. But once you start using it it has its annoyances that can outweigh the VGA screen, the only great thing it has going for it. It has a faster CPU but its impacted by the fact that the CPU is drawing 4 times the screen real estate which slows it down a LOT.
Ram/Rom is the same
Both have a QWERTY K/B
Both have Bluetooth
Both have 1.3MP camera.
Also be aware that in the US there is no 3G WCDMA network, there is 3G EDGE rolling out tho, so the Wiz can go 3G out here.
Oh and the Wiz has Wifi b and g and will be upgradeable via rom to e and i too. Universal is b only.
IMO the Universal is a little too fragile also. Not sure about the Wiz as i havent got it yet but its on its way and I had a play with it. its seemed to be more sturdy.
So. Its more like comparing a Ferarri towing a caravan, looks great fairly slick and fast engine bogged down, to a Caterham 7. Looks great, bit smaller, less powerfull engine, fairly robust, No caravan.

i had a Wizard for a couple of weeks. to be honest i loved it but i found the screen too small for easy reading of mail, spreadsheets, internet browsing etc. As a phone it is definitely preferable to the Universal BUT, from my humble point of view, the Universal is the best all rounder i've ever used - it's awesome. Also, once you've tweaked the Universal it's realy fast AND reliable and it does mean that for short journey's abroad i don't need to take my laptop. oh yeah, the Wizard uses mini SD which means you are limited to a 1GB storage card and if you like music, video etc that just ain't enough!

The Wizard has a keyboard.....all right.....BUT, it doesnt have a separate row for numbers (0-9). It shares it with the qwert... keys, and that's simply bad!
IMHO, i think this is a handicap, and is a bad limitation for a device which claims to have a native hw based keyboard...
S
ferrari and BMW?
Think not you are giving the wizard too much credit.
Main problems with the wizard: Too small, it is a stuck up mda compact.
The processor is downright slow.
You are living in the US so yeah, edge is the only option for the 3g network.
Still I think you should not just throw it away and get the wizard.
Furthermore if you do change it is a waste of your money, as the wizard is much cheaper then the universal.
Offcourse there are problems with the universal... what did you expect.
The universal uses vga, which is not supported yet. It uses wm5 too which is not highly compatible with known programs either.
I suggest you wait a while before you do something I am sure you will regret sooner or later.
Thanks!
I want to thank you guys for your responses... I have decided to keep my universal and just continue to use my Sierra Wireless VOQ as a back up when the Uni is TOO MUCH
Now... let's begin with a new ROM...
Thanks again...
Cyb
Im down with the trade!!
I would check your exec they are just as cheap. I dropped my orange variant and the case split open. I am unbiased as I have both and actually vga is supported nativly since wm 2003. So it is not a new thing manuafactures choose not to implement screens.
Wizard thogh a tad slower gets the job done, remeber the tortoise and the bunny. Besides have you actually looked at the benchmarks for the exec they are not that inspiring.
I guess I am British in that sense I am used to waiting, like British transport you will be waiting but it will get yo there though.
battery life
however the wizard is like a moped sipping vegetable oil compared with the universal like a mustang on premium gas when it comes to battery life...

Should I buy HTC Universal or Wait for Hermes?

Any advice from Universal owners would be welcome. I need an unlocked tri or quad band phone and I am ready to buy now. I see that Hermes has 2.0 mp camera which I read is a big improvement. I am not that interested in keyboards and have heard that hermes predecessor (magician?) had problems...so I am concerned about having a slide out keyboard that I do not need which might cause problems in future. The hermes has upgraded blue tooth and usb if I am not mistaken as well as EDGE? Universal has SD while hermes has mini sd.
Any suggestions from Universal owners if I should get my Unlocked Universal now or if I should wait for Hermes???
thanks

If you're not interested in keyboards, the Universal really shouldn't be a choice because it has the biggest keyboard of all HTC devices.
You say that you're ready to buy now, you can start with the Universal. If you don't like it, you could always sell it and get a Hermes when they come out. That's what I would do.
I understand that Keyboard is not on your priority list. However do consider the VGA screen on the uniersal. It is really the best screen I have ever seen. As I do a lot of net browsing a smaller QVGA screen is somewhat a deterrent for me.
Regards
thanks
Thanks all for advice. I have stage fright in making my purchase decision!! I am ready to buy now, but am now concerned that the Universal is already outdated....BUT the hermes wont be available as unlocked for some time....(you can probably understand how my last pocket pc was a phillips nino!!....I keep waiting for the best, and by the time it is available...there is a new best right around the corner!)
From your experience, is the universal a good machine? Will I have huge problems out of the box? Will I need ROM upgrade for it to work?? I am not a super techy guy (don't understand much about modifying these machines and am frankly afraid that I might mess it up) and this machine will need to last me for at least 5 years....I am not one to purchase the latest model each year....
Will I really miss all of the new additions present in the Hermes model?? such as 2.0 mp camera (reviews have said the 1.3 mp cam sucks), and all of the newer email capabilities edge? utms? Or do you think for a regular user that I won't miss them??
Some things that I want for sure:
Blue tooth STEREO phone and mp3 headset combo (so I can keep this brick stored in my bag and make and receive calls without it clipped to my belt all the time....and listen to mp3s in stereo....is this possible?
Voice commands from bluetooth headset...possible?
If there was an unlocked model similar to hermes available now without keypad...I would consider....but only thing I have seen is eten g500 with integrated gps...looks cool but only 1.3 mp camera and no wifi....so I do not see anything else available on market that is better than universal
thanks for any advice/experience you can offer

Let's not get off subject here. Yes, HX4700 has a really neat screen. However, it is not a phone.
what about prophet?
I have been reading about prophet...as a possible alternative to universal......I am worried that 200 mhz processor might be too slow for skype...one review said it was really slow.....but then another review said it was as fast as universal... has anyone used universal with voip or skype ...does it work ok??
Thanks for any comments.... is there a huge benefit to having universal's umts and 3G (most of my time is in america).....or would the prophet's (or Hermes) EDGE be seen by current universal owners as a big plus..and a better choice today...?
thanks again for the advice

Scott, currently 3G and UTMS, none of that stuff is avaliable here in the US. So if you spend a majority of your time here, it probably won't do you any good. EDGE will, but like I said it will only make a real noticable difference if you tether with a laptop and use it as a modem.
The 200mhz processor in the Prophet and Wizard series is a nice processor. For day to day usage, you probably won't even know that it's 200mhz. For Skype (If you use that feature a lot), I would steer away from the OMAP processor. I know some people say this and say that, in reality, it's really not a fast processer when coming down to run memory hogging big programs. The one thing I REALLY REALLY liked about the OMAP processor is how long those phones lasted on one charge. I can really use my Wizard all freak'n day and it would laugh at me. My Universal...that's a different story.

Thinking about it

Well, I was thinking about buy a Kaiser and then I started to look at the specs and the Im really really thinking about getting 7501. I have few questions for people that own it.
1) First how is it as a phone ??/?
2) Is it posible to cary on belt, the belt clip case ?
3) How is the internal GPS ?
4) How is the camera quality ?
5) is it worth it ?
Thanks in advance.
1) It works great as a phone... if you're willing to use a bluetooth headset. Along with voice dial, I rarely need to actually touch the device for phone functions. Speakerphone is very good if you don't mind everyone hearing your business.
2) There is only one know belt clip case, and that had problems, I think. Updated model is "Coming soon!" (I hope)
3) GPS works well. Slow cold startup with some programs. Very convenient after years of carrying a hockey puck.
4) I find the camera good for a phone camera, some people have reported some color issues. I ahve not experienced that.
5) For me, yes, it is worth it. It is big... but I am in love with that gorgeous screen where I can actually see spreadsheets, web pages, etc. Wouldn't type the next great novel on it, but keyboard is fine for writing shortish messages. Workmanship is solid. The mag attachment of the keyboard actually works pretty naturally, although backlighting on keyboard would have been a plus. Probably not possible. Also nice sans keyboard as a lovely video player.
If you can afford it, don't mind comments about "your phone is HUGE", and like to have something that is more functional overall than the usual PPC phone, I'd say go for it. Otherwise, Kaiser might suit you better.

THanks for a great explanation. THe belt part is really a killer for me. I really love to have such a nice screen. I would love to see it in person and try it out for my self. Video reviews are great, but until you see it, its not the same. Thanks again for the comments. Anyone else with some comments ?

I am actually using the t-mobile HP 6315 belt case for the phone and it works perfectly. Its a pretty tight fit for the phone and keyboard but if you are of with just carrying the phone, it would not be a bad option!

(1) - (5) Agreed. As to size, I have never felt the ameo is too big. I rarely carry the keyboard (not that that adds much. It fits neatly into a pocket (suit, jeans, short) and you never have to put it to your head, using a BT headset. I always felt slightly worried with my Uni to my ear).
Finally, the crowning glory - the screen. I upgrade every year but could never go back to a smaller screen. That applies even when not running in VGA.......
Love? Probably.
I love it but I disagree about the size.
It is too big as a phone. The need for a bluetooth headset is such that one should have been included.
Although calls with bluetooth headset are PERFECTLY convenient it still means you have to have the device on your person: while this is fine for work or home it does mean that you need to take a second phone out if you fancy some leisure.
Yes the device can happily be used without the keyboard, but I never liked the idea of carrying £500 worth of technology in my jeans without some kind of hard protection over the screen, much as it did feel 'nicer' without the keyboard attached.
I have heard mention of belt cases but I couldn't bear the reaction from my girlfriend/friends if I had to unzip a big pouch strapped to my waist to send a text.
The camera is superb, maybe not as responsive as a Cybershot camera phone but very impressive in terms of clarity and sharpness. I suspect the Kaiser's camera will be identical to that of the Ameo, although the Ameo does have a very bright LED light compared to any other phone I've seen.
The build quality of the Ameo is superb. A really well-built little machine and I LOVE using it. I NEVER use it as a phone but a lot of people manage to, so it's probably more my easily-embarassed nature that stops me doing so.
Oh and you can plug gadgets into it!
The long and short of it is that despite the impressive spec of the Kaiser the QVGA screen still puts me off. I didn't used to be too bothered but the Ameo has changed my mind.
Yes I like it and I think everyone should get one, though you might want to keep your old phone if you've got a stag do or a birthday party looming on the horizon!
Leo, what gadgets do you plug to it?
yozh, you HAVE to look at the device in person. Everytime I saw a review on the x7500 I passed it by because I thought it was BIG and it never interested me. I went today to a local store were they import phones and I was about to purchase the nokia e90. I told the guy as I was getting ready to pay for it that I would just like to take a quick look at the x7500. He opened it and I said WOW WOW WOW. Love at first sight, I pushed the nokia to the side and told the guy to ring me up for the x7500!
Btw, I spent 2 hours reading reviews and some forums to make sure the nokia was for me. Than I finally gave in to buy it. But with the x7500 I had no clue what it was and what it did and just bought it that quick. I did know it was a ppc and that it had 3g support (which works great in chicago) and I was sold. Than when I saw the screen as he turned it on for me I was a happy camper. Than he tells me it also has GPS! And than he said it has 8gb on board! And a 3mp camera and ......... I went home with empty pocket and a smile in my face.
It is one GREAT device! OH, with a2dp,3g,wifi and if you want better battery life you can switch to just use gms, edge. You cannot go wrong. Just need to buy a BT headset that vibrates when phone rings.
Know what you mean!
I had a similar experience to you. Altho ive used alot of Windows Mobile based Pocket PCs and Smartphones, I wanted a decent high spec device to check emails, surf the net, wifi and 3G were both a big plus for me.
I wandered into my local T-Mobile store and asked to have a look at the Ameo, didnt even think id own one. But i took the plunge, travelling another 30-40 miles the next day as my local T-mobile didnt have it, so they called up another store and made sure that stock was available.
Ever since then ive been more than happy with it.
Yeah its huge, and yeah its cumbersome in terms of size in your pocket. Maybe its a substitute for the size of my manhood, hehe! we'll never know! (when i get the phone out usually i receive the response - 'look at the size of that!!!!!')
The point is:
1. Huge screen - Great in VGA mode, but also great in standard, out the box mode to. Watching movies on the Ameos generous sized screen is a joy. Ive never been able to do that on any other phone for lengthy periods of time.
2. 8gb Storage! wow! What more can i say!
3. GPS - as long as the frequent updates are applied, getting a GPS fix is quick and works like a dream
4. 3Million Megapixel Camera. Just got a seperate Canon camera for serious shots, but when abroad on holiday, the Ameos camera was fine.
5. Heavily used as an mp3 player, can use my Bluetooth headset OR standard 3.5mm headphones, a great little touch! (thats what I like, USB charging, standard headphone socket - shows that HTC arent greedy!!!! take note, Samsung / Sony etc etc!)
6. Mini SD memory! Cheeeap! Get a 4gb card! 12gb total storage! Now thats useful!
7. Wifi, rapidly available in most places now.
8. 3G - Sooo speedy, ive found its actually faster than Oranges 3G!
9. Internet Sharing - Use this when theres no Wifi for my laptop, great little feature which works really well.
10. Windows Live - Another application that uses the size of the screen to an advantage! This is the best Messenger yet!
This device is built for T-Mobiles Web'n'Walk plans. No worring about surfing the net, anywhere, anytime! Its great, complete data freedom!
Now when i look down at my device and the little G or 3G symbol has appeared, no frantic panic'ing trying to close the apps down and close the internet connection.
All i would say is that since the Apple iPhone, i really hope the Windows Mobile interface continues to improve. Rather that being the slightly dull business style interface, should be more like SPB Mobile Shell and Wisbar.
Roll on fancy interfaces, i mean, the quality screen would look amazing with a decent UI! Its only a matter of time.
Yeah its big, but who cares! Its not the size that matters! Its what it does that counts! and there are wayyyyyy to many plus points having this phone! (as i hope ive illustrated!)
I cant help thinking how the next device will improve on this one???? Better VGA Screen? Bigger Storage? Slightly smaller overall size? Mmm! Its gonna be tough!

just bought x7501

I currently have a nokia n800, that i am using less and less due to the fact that it is NOT a cell phone in any way. My second latest device is an HTC Touch Dual, i love WM6, and just about everything except the build of the phone. I am getting some disturbing side to side motion in the slide, and it effects how you press the top power on/off button. Luckily i have a squaretrade warranty and im gonna return it and get my money back. Now the point of the post, I have just picked up a new in box, unlocked, x7501. Should arrive in the next couple days and I am totally stoked, I cant wait to see the 5 inch screen! Any quick tips for a new x7501 owner? Thanks for all the help!
flash pk's rom, and instantly switch to realvga 96dpi. gives you masses of screen space. I got mine on christmas eve, and its been a joy to have. just installed all my fave apps and now got it working just how i want it. the realvga thing is my top tip.
x
Thanks very much, i just cant wait to get it! One of the things im most excited about is using an rss reader on the home screen and being able to see more than the first 4 words of the headline, thats how it is on my touch dual!
lol. at first i was annoyed by the large screen. on my hermes, i had the cube and an iphone ui, along with pocket plus on another page using wisbar advance desktop. then along came my athena, and when i finally got a working iphone vga theme, it lookes so stupid. now ive got pocketplus 4, with diary and gprs monitor integrated for all my shortcuts, and resco today plugin for my memory usage. perfect, and shows how you adapt to a device.
And youll probaly get a whole page of rss, with 96dpi, i think its like having 4 qvga screens right next to each other.

I did the opposite and got rid of my Ameo for an N800!
Waiting for Gnokii to be ported so I can use the N800 to send sms/make calls through my N95. The ameo was good but too big, based on the fact that i couldn't 'detach' the cellphone aspect of the device and therefore always had to have an oversized phone on me, whether at the office or on a night out.
I prefer to have a phone (N95) and N800 (via bt dun) for Internet browsing as the browser is infinitely better than either opera or PIE on the Ameo and the sreen res is higher - despite the smaller size - but that's just my personal preference.
yeah, the n800 is still a great product, and it can do a wonder of things. The best part is the linux os, so just about all the best software for it is FREE! I would have never put my n800 down it it had cell abilities. The responsiveness of the touchscreen on my n800 blows away any touchscreen phones ive ever used...I love typeing with the soft keyboard on the n800 Huge thumb buttons. my touch dual has been the biggest dissapointment of all my cell phones....only because as each day passes i feel like the top slide portion is going to break off. Its been getting more play in its slide every day ...Im fairly confidant that i can handle the size of the advantage just fine...as long as i get me a good small earbud style bluetooth.

wait for cellphone tool to be fully functional on OS2008 before you get rid of your N800. It will enable you to connect through your regular cellphone to make and receive calls and texts. The Athena is really no better than your Touch Dual aside from the screen: in fact if i still had my Athena I'd have swapped you!
In order to get over the problem of the Athena's size I bought some Sony earbud Bluetooth headphones, but I never managed to get caller I.D. working and it still didn't get over the size issue: I still had to take the damn thing out with me in some form or other! Without headphones the sound quality of calls through the loud speaker is appalling.
Would be nice if you could get back to us in a few weeks with your thoughts
this user bought an Athena less than a month ago and is selling it already due to usability issues.
I decided the Athena was more trouble than it was worse, and its size was simply unjustifiable given its poor video and browsing performance. Nice screen though, that I have to agree on!
Still got my Hermes though.
I don't think the sound is appaling without headset. I normally use just the speakerphone and have no issue with it. As long as I can have a phone conversation, I don't need the clearest sound in the world. It's a much better solution than having to carry another device. Just my personal preference. Others would like to have headset, which is also a much better solution than having to carry an additional device. I understand you prefer to have multiple devices, and have no problem with that. Hope you allow me to be as happy with Athena as much as you're happy with your N95/N800/Asus eee combination.

I had two Athena's and both had sound issues, though I naturally used to hold them to my face rather than away from me. This was probably the problem. I didn't like broadcasting my conversations to the world though!
I like everyone to be happy of course Eaglesteve and I really don't begrudge your love of the Athena. I like my setup because it gives me more choice, and since I am a browsing addict the N800 fitted the bill better since it not only has a better browser but a higher resolution screen for displaying web content. It lacks a GPS golf companion but that's not something I need right now .
I tend to drift in and out of love for things though. If Windows produce a better mobile platform I'll probably be back to them (after testing it with my Hermes of course). I just wish, Eaglesteve, that Windows were a little more open with outside developers. Perhaps then the true power of the Athena could have been felt. It could have been SO MUCH BETTER - a true multimedia powerhouse.
Aside from the obvious loss of Windows Mobile applications, if Linux were on the Athena THEN we would see what it could do - great video playback, fully functional Firefox browser, USB and a HSDPA modem....it would kick my EEE into touch, since INHERENTLY it is a bloody excellent bit of kit, marred by Microsoft's restricted and buggy software.
well i got my Advantage yesterday Soo, much in love with it, even without changing anything yet. Took it to the bar last night and gave everyone around me gadget envy I picked up the cheapest jabra bluetooth at frys until i order the one I want off ebay soon. So far, the responsiveness of the machine is noticibly faster than the touch dual, not to mention all the other issue ive had with my dual. I know the advantage has a faster processor and all, but i only have about 15 programs installed on my touch dual and at times it lags soo much i try a soft reset, and it boots up with the same lag. I think the roughly 200MHZ bump in processor speed will help a little with this. I love how the keyboard and advantage fit into its leather case, very creative. I find myself using the soft keyboard more than the hard keyboard so I may end up leaving the keyboard at home most of the time. Secondly about the keyboard, when you attach it to the advantage as a screen protector and use the clear portion for the "sub display" I found it very finiky to get the sub display to appear, and i definatly couldnt get it every time I tried. I'll update you as I begin to modify things
Ok, now to begin with the flashing, before I try flashing PK's rom, do I need to do any kind of unlock on the phone first? Its already factory unlocked to any carrier, but I thought i read that there was another unlock that had to be done to allow custom roms. THANKS
edit* It appears that i need to run olipros 3 step unlocker first before installing PK's black rom. Now on PK's page it says that the latest rom version does NOT INCLUDE a radio, and they reccomend upgrading your radio to version 1.50 before flahing the rom.....any tips on how I would go about doing this before I flash the rom?
Hey touchlasvagas, I would like to share in your excitment. I just recieved my Advantage this past Thursday 1/10/08. I too, went to work and made some gadget envy with my supervisor (the guy who hooked me to PDA's). All in fun. The screen is phenomonal. The clarity is superb...and coming from the x51v (which is another amazing machine) there is alot more to see with softwared installed. The processor is extremely fast. After updating the Opera and reworking the configuration...the internet browser does a fine good job at work and school.
I hope I can find an extended battery somewhere!
I'm following your post so please post when you discovered the steps to unlocking, flashing, and all the other good stuff.
Just sharing in the excitment!!!!!
Kenjari
Kenjari, is yours a factory unlocked x7501 as well? Im ready to begin the flashing, I just want to get word from someone regarding the fact that it states the radio is left out from PK's rom....the radio for what? He recommends updating the radio rom before flashing and I have no idea what hes talking about hopefully someone chimes in so I can get a'flashin

Touchlasvegas, I believe he is refering to either the Bluetooth, GPS, or Wifi. I will scan the forum to see if I can dig up more information. I could be wrong though.
Yes, I have an unlocked x7501.
If I'm wrong...hopefully someone will come along soon.
the phone comes with radio rom installed, but it might not be 1.50.0.0. people claim this is the best, but on both of my wm devices, ive only had one radio rom. so if you dont have signal problems with your advantage, there isnt much need to upgrade radio [my opinion]
x
thanks for the info rory, i havent tested out my wifi yet, however the gps and everything else seems to be working great, so i would imagine i have no real reason to upgrade my radio. Looks like in the next couple hours i will give olipros unlocker a try and then flash the new rom
kenjari i would say hold off on flashing for right now, i believe i followed all the steps and now it appears i have a bricked, or at least semi-bricked advantage in front of me I made a post with all the descriptions of what i did and what happened, please feel free to check it out if you can help

touchlasves, I just responded you your other post. Please take a look. I think you're still safe. Anyway, it's a good idea to wait fo touchglasvegas to complete his experiment from the viewpoint of risk management.
thanks eagle, im gonna try pks rom now as soon as i figure out which exe file to run first
Thanks for the advice touchlasvegas and eaglesteve. I hope everything works out okay. Let me know if there is anything you need me to do. I can research with you if you want!!

Any Regrets on your choice of phone?

Hello,
I am currently a cingular 8525 user but the call for more ram faster processing has gotten to me. I am also drawn to the touch interface (my swipes are blocked by my phones bezel around the screen). Do you guys have any regrets about your purchase. I think i will get a niki or wait on teh cruise what do you guys think if you had to do it again would you wait?
i'd still get the niki
I'd still buy the niki, because I really like to have the buttons, I already had a bluetooth gps unit and don't really need wifi, I will use my laptop for fast internet browsing and have a unlimited data bundle for umts.
although I have to say that with et9 and the touch keyboard it isn't too annoying to be using the on screen keyboard.
So I think it's a matter of personal taste, which one do you prefer, the hardware keypad or the gps/wifi availability..
I have the bluetooth gps unit as well and dont use my wifi at all. Also for the keyboard i was gonna be leaning more towards the touchpal keyboard. Its hard to use on my Hermes becasue of the bezel. I think i may opt for it.
I honestly wouldn't buy it. For about the same price I would get an Asus P535 with GPS and WI-FI.
New HTC models have problems, mainly with missing drives, making them slow!
But since I got it as a Xmas present ... can't complaint :x

If I knew what I know now, that the irritations that I have about it now is a F******** feature, and not a flaw in the design, I would have waited for a better alternative, or another WM phone.
Atleast to just throw something in HTC's face. Yes, I'm that disappointed, and will be until they fix me some drivers so it doesn't run worse than a 3-4 year old PDA.
Thanks for the input ill hold off until something comes from HTC. I have heard issues with sevral of their new phones.
The Asus P535 doesnt look all that impressive...as far as specs go.
battery is weak. other than that the device rocks.
xt9 sucks in the beginning. after a while it is good.
i really like that you can navigate without stylus. i would buy it again.
I would also buy it again.
Beside the fact that is looks pretty fancy, it is rock solid.
I am only missing internal GPS
@asus p535
unfortunately, it does not have UMTS and only 64mb ram!
I, too, would buy this phone again. It is the coolest looking and functioning phone I've ever owned. Just the right size and very solid.
Please stay away from HTC phones. They'll just advertise good hardware and not provide the proper drivers to have them working to it's full potential. In other words, it's like buying an awesome piece of hardware that only runs 30% of its full power.

I'm one of the victims because I bought an HTC TOuch Dual.
So piece of advice.. I'd rather get something from Eten or even apple if I were you.
I have three regrets:
1. No USA T-Mobile 3G. Since T-Mo doesn't have working 3G here yet, it just means I'll have to buy another phone on the off chance they get it working this century.
2. QC issues. The first Touch Dual I bought died 14 days in. Too early to say anything about the replacement. So far so good, though.
3. No GPS. Kind of upsetting that HTC disabled the GPS ability on this phone, but for me it's a "nice extra" and not a requirement. I bought it knowing it wouldn't be there.
Otherwise, it's by far the best phone I've ever owned. Even with the driver issue it beats the snot out of my Wizard (US T-Mobile MDA) as far as speed, I love the touch interface tweaks compared to the MDA and I love the sleek form factor compared to the giant brick the MDA was.

Is this driver issue only with video or complete phone performance. I feel for you guys but i dont watch video on my phone as it will eat the battery up during travel. Seems to be a mixed crowd though.
complete phone performance. the simpliest task of scrolling up and down a page is totally messy!

COMPLETE PHONE PERFORMANCE.
It's like running your PC on Safe Mode.
You can't even scroll on PIE or Opera Mini without being agitated!
NOTE: Some people are already satisfied (or can live with a PC that runs in Safe Mode) that's why some people does not notice the difference.
Thanks...guess ill be passing on this one.
The sad thing is I REALLY wanted this phone, but the lack of proper driver support is just completely retarded; the Touch Dual is a beautiful device, much more attractive, IMO, than the iPhone, but if they can't be bothered to implement the drivers properly, and the phone performs like crap as a consequence, then I've got to look elsewhere. Has anyone had any experience with Eten's hardware? Specifically the X or M800?

I never tried big films (700mb, 1:30h), but I can see small 10 minute clips without a problem! No stops, no delays, nothing. the biggest problem is scrolling up and down on a page. it goes crazy!
