HTC Prophet or HTC Herald? - JAMin, XDA Neo, S200 General

Hi.... I'm plannin to buy my first PPC. I'v been using an MPx200 (WM5) smartfon.
I'm confused between Prophet & Herald. I like the pull out KB of Herald. But the PPC is costlier than Prophet.
Does the absence of KB affects Prophet's productivity? I want to send SMS's & emails now and then. Is there a good alternative to the physical KB in Prophet? The on-screen KB seems to be quite small.
Have any one been using portable (foldable) KB, for the Prophet? Also I'v heard of an app called CalliGrapher. Is that good for jotting msgs quickly?
Please put in your valuable suggestions and help me......

Another input option is the transcriber - handwriting recognition

Is it Reliable??
Is handwriting recognition feature as fast to use as physical KB? Is the inbuilt transcriber gud. Or shud i get 3rd party apps lol??

handwriting is quite reliable, but you can also try this SPB software house fullscreen keyboard -- you can tap the buttons with you fingertips and this increases the speed significantly.

Your situation is similar to what I had about one year ago. I was wondering which phone I should get, a prophet or a wizard?
I hate the keyboard so much, since it makes the ppc phone bulky and looks stupid. That is why I did not get a T-mobile MDA (wizard) at around $99.00 (after rebate, with contract), but bought a prophet at $500 instead. (by the way, prophet and MDA are almost identical in terms of hardware, except for the kb). 2 years contract is not an issue for me, because after I bought my prophet, I also signed a two years contract with T-mobile.
To me, KB is just a stupid idea. I have my ultraportable laptop with me all the time, why I need to write long documents on my phone? All my friends who got MDA are jealous about my prophet now, and none of them found the KB with MDA is practial useful.
But it is totally depends on your life style. If you do not have a laptop, and you have to write all your word documents and long long emails with your phone, you might find the kb is useful for you.
Just my 2 cents.

Having seen other Pocket Pc phones I look at the Prophet and really do marvel at it even though I no longer own one! For its size and packed features it is very impressive.
If you want a keyboard you will have to carry around a bigger sized phone. If you are not comfortable with a larger device and can manage with a touch screen KB its the Prophet.
A friend has an XDA IIs, nice as it is.....a little on the bulky side to use as a phone.

I agree -- KB does not do any good, makes device heavier and less reliable having too many moving parts which are gonna loosen one day and you will get funny creaking peace of plastic
IMHO keyboard is useful in devices not smaller than htc universal, and never in a cell phone with a lots of ways of screen input.

If it were me I'd be debating between the Trinity and Herald, since the Trinity is the updated Prophet.

Thanx Guyz!
@waterdeep
Thanx 4 rep pal... I think dat on-screen kb is a lil small on d 2.8" screen. As I hav 2 rely a lot on my PDA for data input, I thought a physical KB wud b gud. Now r u tellin dat a phy kb is a useless option? U r confusin me pal!
@coolfire74
Gr8 resp bro.. wel sadly I don hav a lappy n so hav to rely on my fon for SMSing n mailin. Esp wen on road...
@a340
Herald is the sam size of Prophet. Weighs mor though
But there's a solid semi-auto KB for Herald
@neomagik
Trinity: Way too costly 4 me, I don hav 3G, No need of GPS, I'm not a globe trotter, i think d 200MHz of Prophet/Herald wud do 4 me...
@ ALL .....
Does the Prophet hav a fully functional Crossbow update? Is there anythin on d Prophet dat doesn't work properly if I flash it to Crossbow?
Thanx again guys...

For quick text input one other option is the PhonePad SIP. Great little app that, if it's not on your device when you get it (it's written by HTC, but my Chinese Language Dopod didn't ship with it) you can download from the forums by doing a search for Phonepad.
It supports full on T9, so I mostly use it for sms.
Haven't heard of fully functional Crossbow update, and I think prophet got skipped on the latest AKU update, but hey, what do I know? There's plenty available on these forums thanks to the great community!

No Crossbow ROM 4 Prophet??
Hmmm PhonePad seems to be an interestin option... esp for typin short msgs... thanx thulsey!
I think I'v seen threads discussin Crossbow ROM on Prophets. Is it any gud, doin so?
Wats d graphics chip inside d Prophet & Herald? Wil i b able to play new generation PPC games?
Games lik, Call of Duty for PPC?

P3600 Review

A little review with pics posted in my blog, in spanish language (sorry for inconvenience), of course, with pics.
Click on my sing.
I have played with the trinity 1 day(also have a jamin) and a few thoughts
No fingerprint problem in the white version at least(think how hard it is to keep a black car looking good--but easier with a white)
Boot up speed very fast--45 sec or better
Bluetooth music--you will need all the tweaks of the prophet/hermes but if done it sounds good. No skipping with iplay/ R35
3G works even with my old ATT sim card(very fast download speeds- 5 x edge). Able to stream Sirius on the high bitrate setting! Can receive voice call while getting data!
Not unstable--put pocketweather, weatherpanel, ip dashboard, pocket plus, chronos--no probs
Camera-better with low light conditions
Speed-overall better
Speaker/ringtone--louder
Downside-None yet
I still cant believe it....
Got my Trinity one week now and its really the best Gadget I ever had. There is simply nothing wrong with it. Everything works. Fantastic.

Which are all the tweaks? AFAIK there is only the 'JointStereo' one.
BTW--no problem streaming internet music over wifi to bluetooth headphones. This would not work on prophet

Dude! Do you have the same sluggishness with the dutch P3600 (maybe WWE has it also)... i really think it's horribly slow sometimes; slow menu popups, unbearable scrolling-speed, etc. It seems to consume lots of RAM compared to WM2003SE on Jam when running.
Nice review btw !
Do you have any good tips in the field of registry-hacks 'n stuff ? Like making it possible to map more buttons ?
I've read somewhere here that there's a lot of tweaks for Bluetooth stereo on the TyTN and the S200...what would those be, and can someone explain some more about that ? (i'm having trouble connecting it for the first time, and some dropouts sometimes... will resume music after phonecall though )

When a lot of programs are open it slow down a bit, but not that much. The reaction time of menus is slower then mine Qtek s100. I don't know if it is a WM5 issue or the device. Emulators like Scumm and Dosbox feel definitely faster.
I also made some registry and Windows Mobiles hacks.
I mapped the speech recognition button to the CommManager and the voice recorder is the speech recognition button.
I added the US/WWE softkeyboard to the device. The Dutch keyboard is missing the question-mark and exclamation-mark when showing large keys.
I now have the WWE keyboard which is definitely better.
Maybe I try to create a new thread with some registry hacks next week.
At this moment I try to buy a Nokia HS-12W headset, I hope it is compatible with the HTC P3600.
Just curious, how did you add the US/WWE keyboard?

I extracted a HTC Wizard (WWE) rom to my PC.
I copied the following files to my device:
msim.96.dll
msim.dll
After placing the files you need to add the next registry key:
Code:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{42429667-ae04-11d0-a4f8-00aa00a749b9}]
"ShiftLock"=dword:00000000
"KBMode"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{42429667-ae04-11d0-a4f8-00aa00a749b9}\IsSIPInputMethod]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{42429667-ae04-11d0-a4f8-00aa00a749b9}\DefaultIcon]
@="msim.dll,0"
There is only a problem with setting it as default input methode.
It gave me a white screen after a soft-reset.
Next week I will try to post the files, if it is legal.

typical, get shafted by HP again.... shell out close to half a grand on a device you expect that youll get some decent support with it and not for it to become obsolete quite this quickly....
Hp need to stop doing things like this, if the upgrade doesnt come about for the hw6915 its twice that they have done me soon after buying a new device from them.
Whats the score on an unoffical upgrade? The SIP/VoIP functionality for this device is just too good not to have (being a fully paid up vonage /vonage softphone user)

Well, dont agree here...
6915 is far best pda i owned... stable, works nice, keyboard is great, everything works as it should just need to customise it...

official WM6 will never be on this phone, wait for another 6XXX release with WM6 if you want it so badly...

are you sure that you know how to use a winmo phone? if you like palm os that much, why dont you get a treo? LOL
well because the only gps software who has good coverage of romania is i-go, and the only version it has it's a win mobile version.
i have a win mobile pda phone and that's it ... i have to use it.
by the way, does anybody tried gps software like igo, tomtom, etc, with wm6?
how it's like?

Sorry but maybe I didn’t get you right
My English is so so
You are saying that you find WM unreliable due to the fact you are not familiar with a 3prt app to close running program when tapping on the O.K. (try SPB PLUS it will fill like palm)
WM by default enable you to minimize and you can run thins in the background
Let's say you want to copy/compare info from a note to your contacts list
You just SW between the apps (there are a lot of uses for running things in background)
Maybe you prefer learning every time a new OS when there is a new device?
The grate thing with WM is that all the things you are used to on your home pc you perform on mobile with the same approach
You just need to replace the mouse right click with tap & hold and left click with a tap
Remember that the default is minimize and if you want to close app you tap on your virtual keyboard CTL then tap on Q
Good luck
Hope I helped

Sony Erricson Xperia 1 vs Samsuny Omnia

Right I am looking for a new phone to upgrade from my Tytn 2 and I have got it down to these two. At the minute I use my phone for personal use and make good use of the PIM functions, calander, tasks etc.. I also have like to have a good multimedia base for photos and videos not so music because I have an Ipod. So my question really is which is the best, Samsung I like for its faster processor and larger screen and dimensions, however the x1 covers nearly everything apart from the faster processor and its more expensive. It also has a qwerty keyboard whereas the samsung doesn't is an on screen keyboard as bad as it sounds?
So my main question which is the best?
Also I just have a few more questions regarding softwareon the x1, does it have the on screen mouse pointer like the omina and does it come with photo, video and mp3 editing software as standard like the omina?
Sorry if this is wrong place its my first post
Thanks for everyones help in advance

I would go for the X1, it had 4x the screen resolution and a qwerty keyboard is a must for me. It is however more expensive. PDAdb.net does a good comparison of features, and try reading some reviews and hopefully it will help you decide.
Regarding the faster Processor of the Omnia. My father got an Omnia and I have to say that the X1 is in fact the faster device.
The Onscreen Keyboard of the Omnia is quite good, would say something comparable to the HTC Keyboard. If you want to send MMS then you have to install exttra software on the Omnia. The MMS Composer of the Omnia is just Bullsh...t. Some Settings on the Omnia are just weird, for example the Camerasettings. Last but not least, my father is thinking about to buy a X1 and give the Omnia to his wife. I would say good PPC are both and if you want a hardwarekeyboard and standdart plugs (like miniusb and 3,5mm Streoplug) then X1, if you don't care about then the Omnia is also a very good choice.
I have read quite a few reviews but however I carnt find one comapring the omnia and X1 directly. However I am leaning towards the X1 at the minute. Can anyone else should any light on the software on the X1?
Omnia has a pool screen compared with X1. The best advantage of Omnia is the price.

What the HD2 really lacks

About a month ago I upgraded from my old trusty and excellent HTC HD to the new HD2.
After a few tweaks, haks and fixes and some downloads, I was extremely happy of my HD , in fact the only real improvement in the HD2 to me seems to be the much faster CPU (which of course is not a little thing)
However there are a couple of major gripes (or just lack of aternative options) on the HD2 that I find particularly unnerving, prominent among which is the excruciatingly bad Kboard.
It's even worse than the one I've got on my HTC Hero which has a far smaller screen.
On the HD I had installed "FingrKboard" which I found simply excellent; is'nt there something similar that would work on the HD2?
Or maybe do you think that the same .cab file that worked on the HD's wm 6.1 will also work on the HD2 wm 6.5?
Second major problem with the HD2 is that I still have'nt been able to find a (good and possibly free) registry editor for it.
I have read about some very interested tweaks for the HD2 in the threads of the forum, but they all require the use of a registry editor, which one would you suggest?
And again: would I be able to install and use one of those I had on the wm 6.1 of my old HD(1) ?
And last (and probably least too): would "Gyrator" ,be installable and working on the HD2 as it did on the HD1?
No eh?
And do you know of another app that would make the screen turn from portrait to landscape with all apps?
Even if you could point to the solution to just one of my conflicts with the HD2 , you would have accomplished your Xmas good deed by making very happy a poor afflicted geek.
This is the way you might earn your place in heaven, you know ?

FingerKeyboard worked on WM6.5 on the HD1 and works on the HD2. I found it to be superior to the standard HTC keyboard.
There is also a cab file that reduces the sensitivity of the screen on the HD2. This is supposed to make typing a bit easier although I have not personally tried it.
For registry editing, I use PHM RegEdit. It's a free program.
I use Resco Explorer and once you've downloaded that (for free), download the registry editor add-in (both cabs on the Resco site)

The registry editor stays unlocked though. I actually never use the Explorer part but you're right, that gets locked after a few days so you need to purchase it (if you want to).
Try Swype as a keyboard. I found it on this site and haven't looked back! It has an amazing input method and is not as over-sensitive as the native HTC keyboard. Check it out....

I second PHM RegEdit.
Simple, easy to use and free.
Thanx fellas.
I had both PHM regedit and fingerkeyboard because I had downloaded and installed them on my old HD(1) and Samsung Omnia i900 ( of which I got rid long ago) , now I have installed them on the HD2 and they work great.
I wonder which other win 6.1 apps will work on the big screen and win 6.5 of the HD2.
Dutty (one of my heroes) for exemple had to modify Cyberon voice dialer to get it to work on the HD2 because as it was the standard version would'nt play together with the HD2., so not all HD apps would be usable on the HD2.
I wonder how Gyrator would behave in the new environment.
Oh, and thanks very much for the link too, very interesting and useful.
I hope I'll be soon able of being of some help too.

Where is it hidden?
Is there any particular option I should enable?

Hi there..
Dont mean to flame or anything like that.
But the title of the thread suggests that you arnt happy with the device.
So we start reading your post.
But its all just software features you lack or want to change.
And that does not really imply the hardware exclusive to the HD2.

Thank you mate, I looked for it for 2 days, maybe I should wear my glasses more often.
@ Enonoid
I'm sorry if from my title you or anybody else got the impression that I was'nt happy with the HD2: I bloody love it man!
I just wished to find a few apps, progs and tweaks to which I got used with my old HD1 (which I loved too).
I also have an HTC Hero and a Nokia N97 ,which after Nokia changed camera lens, camera cover, GPS chip & software, installed ROM 2.0, optimized memory, and gave me for free one year subscription to the latest OVI maps for Europe, has become a great phone too; but the HD2 is my fav hands down, even though as an OS per se I like Andrid more than WM 6.5 (mainly because of the marketplace and the awsome free apps available).
One must be a brainwashed Apple fanboy not to like like the HD2.
Gyrator works fine on the HD2

Try Swype as a keyboard. I found it on this site and haven't looked back! It has an amazing input method and is not as over-sensitive as the native HTC keyboard. Check it out....

Swype is the next generation keyboard, amazing. I am running it on the HTC Touch HD, although it will run much better on a capacitive screen, more sensetive the screen the better it will work.
Yes, Swipe rocks, but after BB tweaks adjusted the screen sensitivity of the standard kwerty, and the FingerKboard, they have become absolutely excellent too.
The only problem is that I can't put any of those in ladscape position.
I have tried to reinstall Gyrator but it does not seem to work on the HD2 it seems made for devices with styluses and resistive screens.
Did anyone find a way to type messages, notes, etc. in landscape?

Anyone upgrade from Kaiser to Leo?

Hi,
I'm specifically wanting to chat to users who has upgraded from a Kaiser to the Leo?
I know its a narrow request but im still using my kaiser and really want to know the impact of the loss of the hardware buttons etc.
Thanks
Kaiser to Leo
I've owned a kaiser for almost two years now and have been following XDA since the first day I got it, and with any luck i'll be getting the leo next week thru TMO. and will post any information I can.
Yep. Forgot about the Kaiser as soon as I got the Leo. Put it on sale, took it out again after a week to wipe/pack it, and wondered how on earth I spent 2 years on that tiny and slow brick.
The keyboard is missed indeed, but that's minor next to the rest.
moving from the Kaiser to the Leo is one thing you shall not regret..
the capacitive multitouch screen is awesome for typing, the big size makes it even better...
the 1ghz processer makes everything totally fluid, from the interface to the camera..
im sure you remember the openGL problems in the kaiser (hardware 3d acceleration), well that will be a thing of the past with the LEO which has openGLES 2.0 support
but hey, thats just my opinion
Two months ago I had to sent my HD2 for screen repair, at that time I was forced to use my Kaiser for a week. I was so shocked, everything was so slow and I could not orientate on the small screen.
I upgraded from Kaiser to Leo (HD2). The HD2 is the single best windows mobile device ever bar none IMHO. Upgrade now you will not regret it.
Thanks for your responses, please keep them coming!
The other question i have is: Which apps did you lose when you upgraded?
My list of favourite apps, are in my signature, so if you happen to know how well they run on the Leo, i'd appreciate the feedback.
Theoretically, they should all work, given my Kaiser is running 6.1 but since screen resolution may be a limitation of any application, i'd sure like to find out before i commit.
Lastly, is there any videos that show how appointments are displayed on the Leo's Today screen? Can you still add today screen items?
And is there a standby button to lock the screen and turn the screen off?
Cheers!
had Kaiser before Leo
There will be some things you will miss, but it will depend on how you use the phone and for what purpose.
I miss being able to highlight text in the calendar header (without having to go to edit mode. It is more difficult to highlight text without a stylus, and drawing in notes etc with a finger tip is a lot harder.
If you have added a lot of features to your Kaiser from XDA Dev (or other places). It will take you some time to find the adons to do the same functions. It's a whole new learning curve.
The HD2 is a giant step foward, but it does have it's quirks and frustrations. Plan on spending hours on here finding solutions.
It does not come with a belt case! You don't need a screen protector. The speakers are fairly CR#P. The graphics are fantastic - movies , photos etc. It has the Cool factor. Google maps are great on this.
The camera can be annoying - It won't take a picture until it can focus (if you have a moving object, can drive you crazy while it takes 10 seconds to focus).
The kaiser was great (would buy them for my staff), the HD2 is better.
I had to buy mine at full price as they are not brought into NZ by vodafone.
Note for any one in NZ - Vodafone phone insure wanted to replace my Kaiser (TYTN II) with a nokia E71, E72 or E75. they will not replace with a phone they do not sell, nor an iphone or BBerry The phone they sold for $1800, they replaced with a phone with resale value of $635.

Worldcard mobile is stock with the HD2, SPB wireless monitor works fine... never heard of all the other ones

By default the HD2 doesn't use the Today screen anymore, it's replaced by the HTC Sense interface. Check the official videos for a glimpse. You can enhance it (see this), disable it and go back to the old Today screen (would remove most of the HD2's beauty though), or integrate a Today screen within it as a tab (see this).

Thanks for all that info.
Will SPB Wireless monitor stay on the SenseUI front page?
Can you post a screen shot please?

Nope, but it's the only reason why I use MTP
I'm looking to make this very upgrade as Virgin UK have what seems like a very good offer on at the moment - £25/month and HD2 for free. I do just have a couple of questions that may make the decision to move from my Kaiser easier for me - they might be silly questions, but here goes anyway:
A problem I currently have with the Kaiser is that the lock screen is very dim and I really struggle to see it in sunlight - does this problem still exist with the Leo?
I am very used to using the stylus or the keyboard and find that I make only a few mistakes in text entry - is the Leo's screen keyboard as easy to use and is there a text entry screen similar to the block recogniser or letter recogniser in WM6?
GPS on the Kaiser is very slow to get a fix using TomTom 6 - is the Leo quicker and will TomTom 6 still run on the Leo?
My Kaiser will usually go for a couple of days without a charge - with the same sort of use what sort of life should I expect with a Leo?
Many thanks in anticipation of some useful replies.

1) You'll have no problem with the lock screen on the Leo. A gesture is all it takes to unlock it and you can choose your own screen for good measure.
2) There are various inputs available for the HD2. Using the touch screen after being used to a hardware keyboard takes some getting used to, but once you're there you won't want to go back! I'd highly recommend Swype v3.19.20.20.6343 as an alternative text input method.
3) The HD2 is very, very fast at finding and locking onto satellites. It also downloads a satellite database when needed which means locking on takes seconds. I can even usually get a fix indoors quite easily, something none of my many GPS devices can't do.
4) You're looking at charging every night, depending on use. Obviously battery life isn't a strong point of a phone this powerful, but there are various ways to maximise battery life when you need to. I've settled for buying a spare battery ($4 from Dealextreme) and a charger which charges the spare battery + the phone (£3 on ebay).
Don't forget Quidco (www.quidco.com) if you're signing up to Virgin, currently £30 cashback to be had! http://www.quidco.com/virgin-mobile/
Good luck!

I have two Kaisers.
I also have a Rhodium.
I now have an HD2.
HD2 screen is enough reason to upgrade for me.
Best HTC phone I have had.
