Herald or Hermes ? - Wing, P4350 General

Hi all,
For those who have the experiences/luxury to tried on
both Herald and Hermes, can you pls share your experience
between the two ?
I am had a hard time deciding which to get.
Hermes is selling at much lower price than Herald over here.
Herald does not seem to be picking up here.
Also O2 Zinc in also about to be avaliable in matters of weeks.
I get the general feedback that Herald is much more
responsive than Hermes despite slower speed processors -
a big factor of consideration for me.
Specifications for both devices is OK for my usage/applications.
What I need is actual user feedback in comparision of the
2 devices such as
- actual battery life performance?
- skype performance?
- device stability ... etc ?
- third party devices accessories - e.g. dual sim card add on....etc ?
Thanks in advance.

I was in the same predicament, it came down to the fact that because i have a crappy data plan i would have no use for 3G, so I went for the much smaller and better looking (IMHO) herald. Very happy with it.

does the Herad has the same freeze issues ?
This would be really important for me since 2 resets a day with my TyTN/Hermes is just too much...

I have to restart it once every 3 days or so, using the Herald very very often !
But this always depends a lot on which Software you have currently installed on your device !

I would assume this would change with XV6800(verzion version of the Herald with rev a 3G) since it has 256 of memory and aku 3.5?

Get my Herald today
Hey,
I get my Herald today. Since today I used an TYTN.
First: Herald impressed me with they good performance and better looking.
Tomorrow I start to test it with all my programm from TYTN.
The TYTN has at the end problems with freezing.
I give you update
Oliver

what is the update?

Top Herald
Hello,
after 6 days using the Herald and play a lot of programmes on my Herald i can, say: Herald ist top, no freezing, good performance and it feels good.
I use it with an alucase and this ist the very much better with the TYTN. No problems to switch on camera, Com Manager....... The buttons on Herald are well placed (better than the TYTN). The Keyboard is better than the TYTN (no uncontrolled outcoming).
+ Better Keyboard
+ No freezes
+ Good inital Quality
- Performance a little bit slower than TYTN (but its OK)
If need to buy an HTC, at the moment I would buy an Herald (But I think after Herald generation there will come an Herald with 3G and a better CPU like the Samsung with AKU 3.X, thats my next HTC "Herald")
Oliver

Thx
Thanks for the update. Funny enough I mananged to get my Hermes running without any freezes: I am quite sure it is the SD card reading that can cause some lock-ups. So I maanged to get just every frequently used app on my internal memory. And the eMails & attachements as weel. I managed to use my hermes since 96 hours without freeze now.
Well, the Heradl seems quite nice - I will probalby get it as a second device and test it thoroughly.
Regards,
Apple*

Advice with Wizard purchase

Hello everyone.
I'm seriously considering purchasing a Qtek 9100. I wanted to ask a few questions before I go ahead and I'm hoping someone could help me. I wanted to buy a qtek primarily because of the color (slight darker silver). Is the qtek any different from the O2, K-jam.. and all other versions? I know O2 comes with a preinstalled software interface but are there any other differences? Particularly in processor performance or perhaps resolved bugs?
Question number two is adding a TomTom 5.21 Bluetooth GPS. I do not have much experience with GPS systems and quite frankly I just intend to get the Bluetooth receiver (from TomTom) and perhaps download a copy of the software online (Cracked-torrent [of course for educational purpose ] ). Is this going to work or is it absolutely necessary to purchase the software otherwise the GPS unit will throw me off a cliff. Or is there a better GPS system worth acquiring? (for UK).
Thanks a bunch and I wait eagerly for any help.
Hi,
As far as I know all hardware of the different brands at the same; they all come from the HTC factories. Only software varies. If you are going to use it with an GRPS connection I would advise a branded version (you'll get great value and save some serious bucks) if not the QTEK is the only one that comes without SIM lock. You can swap the ROM as you like, after unlocking they all work with the QTEK, K-JAM or any other rom version as long as it's for a HTC Wizard phone.
As for the TomTom, it'll work, but you still need to purchase TomTom if you want to use it. How else will they improve the software if noone buys and they their cash runs dry? (Board policy )
Only the K-JAM Rom allows you to connect to a WIFI network that uses the G standard, but it'll still be only at 11 mb/s. So that shouldn't be an issue. Localized (non english) versions do have some issues but none of great importance.
Go ahaed, buy one. I don't know anyone that regrets it.
Cheers
Cactus
In my eyes, the most important thing you have to bear in mind is that the Qtek version of the Wizard has one major flaw: the paint of the 'messaging', 'internet explorer' , etc. buttons comes off. I have not only read about this on multiple forums, but a friend of mine has experienced this first hand.
as far as I know, Qtek is the only manufacturer who has tried to save some expenses on 'quality paint'
hehe,
Many wish T-Mobile used QTEK's paint It would have saved a lot of people scrubbing hard with a sugarcube to get the ugly pink ie-like symbol off
By now I know what button is for whitch function, I wouldn't mind....
Thank le cactus
Thank you, le cactus. That's a very enlightening response. I would most definitely buy one soon. I've read quite a bit about the the Wizard and I know it came out under different manufacturer brands. I chose the qtek only because I personally liked the darker design. Its really a personal preference. I also wanted to make sure they didn't differ too much in stability.
I will support TomTom as it is the only right thing to do. Again, I just needed to confirm that it worked following a 'different' approach. Thanks a bunch, mate.
I can't wait to purchase my Wizard as my old nokia 5100 is ready to retire. I can't wait for my new toy.
I'm not too bothered with wifi g as well. I don't expect considerable difference with the Wizard's condervative processor speed. Furthermore, I don't intend to use the device for intensive surfing. I might restrict use to checking emails and occasional surfing when I'm too lazy to get up and use my computer.

TyTN or Wizard - what to have

Hi,
I'm in the (un?)lucky position of rolling out 14 devices to our Managers and they WERE going to be Qtek 9100s (HTC Wizard) from Vodafone until someone pointed out the 'better' Vodafone 1605 (TyTN).
As far as I can see there's not much in it apart from the TyTN having a facelift, better spec camera (+ one more camera), 3G capabilities, but having popped along here for some insight, I am concerned about the screen alignment issue (can't be having 14 pissed off Managers after my blood) and other general gripes so what would you guys do - stick with the 9100 (Wizard) or go for the 1605 (TyTN)?
Is the 9100 a better (safer, tried and more tested) bet?
I've had a 9100 to play with for a few days and it seems fine - if a little suggish even when overclocked to 240Mhz - does the TyTN's different processor make a lot of difference?
Also (a bit OT - hope you don't mind), as we're not on a 3G tariff (I presume?! - do you have to specifically ask for this on Vodafone business? We don't really want or need it), do we just ignore the 3Gness of the TyTN or will it 'do' 3G whenever and wherever it can?
Thanks
L3K
Really no comparison, the Tytn is what you want the wizard to be. You should try both and see the real difference. Its like night and day...The wizard was good, but needed a little more speed and refinement. The Tytn is almost there.. Again try both before making your decision. Good Luck.
I would also point out that the jog wheel makes navigation much easier, especially of contacts.
the whole unit is far more responsive and the extra browsing speed may be useful for retrieving e-mails.
I AM a Manager, Past CEO, now Director of Telemedicine activities.
I have both, Wizard (overclocked to 240, omapclock 0.4) and TyTN and I had almost all releases of Windows Ce since the first Casio Caiopeia.
DON'T BUY a TyTN NOW IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR JOB
Wizard ROM is Stable, (I have last I-Mate) the speed in all days activities is more or less the same between TyTN and overclocked Wizard, if you are in an EDGE area the GSM data speed is really faster enought to have fast e-mail and IE navigation.
TyTN is UNSTABLE, software and hw problems, like SD card problems (it disappear sometimes), windows media scrambled MSMETADATA, hangup during sync, some appz not compatible, Screen aligment issue, lot of small bugs also with "side" features, like camera and USB Sync (like wizard first rom) .
If they NEED video telefony is the only real PRO, but UNIVERSAL is a better solution, closer price, or new MITAC or Motorola one hand device ( this isn't the good forum to compare ).
So WAIT new hardware release and new ROM release, and tell them that they have to work so 80% MTBF isn't enought (Medium Time Between Fault)
We (here) are a special group of technology entusiast, and are the real wide beta testers, but business is business

Sergio,
I think that is a bit sensationalist. I have not had the SA issues with the latest v1605's S/N HT631x. I'd be surprised if the other issues that are being reported are not by people that are trying to use the device as a power device, running multimedia video and audio, games etc, not in the slightest in the way that a business user would be using it. I never had the issues that were reported with the Wizard, but a lot of people expect devices to be stable using software not designed for the chipsets and/or operating systems IMHO.
@linker I would look over at our review of the v1605 on www.4winmobile.com and also ask Voda for a trial version of the Treo 750v and the v1605. Make it clear to them that you expect devices that have been tested prior to shipment for the keyboard issues. The QTek 9100 is also know to be buggy, more than the other iterations AFAIK.
Believe me, the most important thing in a Manager mind is: "it had to work anytime, anywere, the only thing I can accept is to charge the battery!"
Read the tyTn and the wizard forums: tytn forum is full of "problems", wizard forum is full of "enhancements", and this is normal, the first has only 3-4 months of wide beta, the second is on the wild since one year.
Gold business lesson: don't be the first, try to be the SECOND! (so called "the windows lesson" )
I think I am a power user, but:
if I put away my SD I am afraid every time I have to put it in again, 50% not recognized at first insert.
- I am resetting my TyTn once a day (new USB drivers?)
- I still haven't heard ANY OFFICIAL NEWS that Screen aligment issue was solved
- I still have to delete manually MSMETADATA every day to have again my video and music list
- I can hangup my TyTN in several well known ways...
- HTC Service is not as good as we expected
So may be he will have still is job after swapping the management to TyTN, but he WILL BE VERY BUSY
Hi Guys - just to update you -
My Vodafone direct business sales contact spoke to their techies and they confirmed the screen problem.
Vodafone are sending me a 1605 to check out so I am going to bash it around (in the most technical sense possible) for a couple of days to see what happens)
I have both the Wizard and Tytn, using them on the Cingular network in California. On the latest ROM, overclocked to 260MHz (using BatteryStatus), the user interface is responsive enough to be usable, and the Wizard is stable for 6 to 8 weeks at a time, sometimes even longer. I have problems with the TyTn every few hours to every few days. The TyTN hardware is superior, but the software is worse than a lot of Beta software I've played with.
If my job were on the line, I would definitely go with the Wizard at this point.

Bad (phones) girls are for fun, good (phones) girls are for business

Got mine :-)

I've got the TyTN and the P4350 now; I'll do some comparison and report back here.
Martin
Can you test the wi-fi reception of this device and compare it with Tytn's range(weak)? Thank you.
Very short : (longer review to come)
Although the P4350 has got a slower CPU (200 Mhz - 400 Mhz on the TyTN), it's working much smoother/faster than the TyTN. The rather annoying delay (although minor) on the TyTN when using the numpad in the phone is almost not detectable on the P4350.
Seems much faster graphics.
The Autoslide keyboard is wonderful! VERY VERY nice. The keyboard simply jumps open.
More to come; when I have the time I'm going to go more in depth with my testing, trying to stress the machine a bit.
So far I'm VERY satisfied! In my eyes it's a better device than the TyTN; it now fits nicely in my pockets (17 mm thick (TyTN 22 mm)). I ended up disabling 3G on my TyTN anyway due to the battery draining - so that the P4350 doesn't have 3G possibilities fits me just fine.
I'll be back ;-)

Hi all,
Had anyone tried skype on the Herald ?
How is it as compared to Hermes ?
Thanks
Have you tested divx with TCPMP?
btw skype is about to release version which run on 200mhz
Hi Pakiyabhai,
That is good news, have you got more details on the new skype -- such as the time frame ?
The new Skype 2.2 beta is the version you're looking for. According to their FAQ it supports the 195MHz OMAP:
http://support.skype.com/index.php?_a=knowledgebase&_j=questiondetails&_i=982
v2.2 BETA download
http://www.skype.com/download/skype/mobile/downloading_low_beta.html
I've been using it with my P4350 and it works great without overclocking. Just use the headset and close other programs before starting. [hint: HTC includes the Task Manager utility in the P4350 that closes apps properly when exiting; it's disabled by default]
Ok its exactly like my beloved old jam. only with a keyboard. the speed is the same, almost better than my tytn and treo 750v. the keyboard is loose compared to my tytn , kjam, and ppc 6700. the internet loads almost as fast as my tytn, i dont have 3g in my area yet. the screen is the best i have had yet except for my old universal (to big) i cant wait for the omni... there are not enough buttons even with ae button plus imnot quite satisfied. the keyboard is the best yet. and the wow factor is the best yet. ill talk more later

Hi Daguru,
Thanks for your reply & info.
How about the Wifi reception as compared to HTC Hermis ?
I was wondering if skype 2.2 requirement of 195MHz is the MIN
operation requirement will not be ideal in practical environment ?
Also I require more feedback on the new skype 2.2 beta with
HTC Herald on the voice quality, connection quality.
As this is very important consideration for me getting this
wonderful device and not HTC Hermes.
The general comment so far is that the Herald is as fast if not faster
than the Hermes even though the CPU Hz speed for Herald is half.
I wonder why ?
I had this impression that, some of the older approx 200MHz PDA phone
devices review have mentioned that during basic operation
e.g. sms, making call etc is too slow. Does Herald have such problem
i.e. keypress respond is too slow ?
Thanks for reading
Well I have had my herald for a few weeks now. It was going to be my primary device. but also two weeks ago i got hsdpa in my area. so I was playing with my three hsdpa enabled pda phones. but here I am a week or two later back using the herald again. I have the cpu set to 252 with omapclockplus . It is just so small and cool. It is slower than my tytn when going through the menu's. But it turns on quicker, answers the phone quicker. has better sound quality ( the phone) Voice command 1.6 works flawlesly over the headset with no tweaks right out of the box. it tells you who is calling through the blootooth headset. and is much more responsive..
that said the ram leaves much to be desired. I admit I have a tun of programs that i consider must haves. But on a fresh soft boot I have 19 mb free. about two mins later its at 15 and it seems to be hovering around 12 or 13. Ok so i have never had a low mem problem, but I like to have it there.
Hello,
I finnaly got mine too ;-) It's working fine with Orange FR, just need to find some GPRS parameters.
Also I just found this news:
http://www.vodafoneshop.de/shop/det...66&artikel_daten_id=3555&B_ID=243&I_ID=0&TD=1
Vodaphone released the Herald/P4350 as VPA Compact IV (with MS Direct Push & Blackberry support).

Tomorrow I'll get mine

Tried one Athena today!

Hi,
I finally got an Athena in my hands today (no I did not buy it, just tested it in the store).
Here is what I have to say - bear in mind that I have an BA (Qtek 9090) for more than 2 years and for about one month I have an Universal.
1) Screen: fantastic! Big, 640x480, bright. But... I thought it was 800x600? Anyway, the screen looks much better than the one of my Universal.
2) Keyboard: when I first saw pictures and read about the "magnetic" keyboard, my first thought was: what a piece of ****! It will never hold... Today I was corrected: the magnets are great and it is very stable. Unfortunatly I could not try it out as a cover/in closed state, due to the security-device of the store, which was glued on the inside of the keyboard.
3) Software: it had WM5 installed. Hmmm... my Universal is running WM6. WM5 is yesterday! I checked the HTC webpage and there is a new Athena model, with the only difference being the shipped WM6. This is at least ridiculous! Can existing Athena customers upgrade? The one I had did have a portuguese WM5, which was nice to see. If they bring out a portuguese WM6 for Athena, could that be used in some way for my Universal's cooked WM6?
4) Features: I did not try the camera and the GPS receiver did not work inside the store, but the feature-list is impressive.
Overall opinion:
Good
- screen is fabulous
- keyboard seems ok, even being attached by magnets only
- impressive hardware specs (CPU, RAM, GPS, WLAN, etc.)
Bad
- should have WM6
- only few pre-installed programs
- and... IT IS BIG, IT IS REALLY BIG
If you thought that the Universal is big - take a look at the Athena!
This is not a phone, it is a small tablet PC.
And here is the problem: I think it is cheaper/more functional to purchase an Asus R2H and a regular phone (or just stick to the Universal).
This way you get a real tablet PC (a small one), but with Windows XP, which means you actually get software for it!
1100 Euro is a lot of money for this device.
Cheers,
vma

what's the most suitable WM6.1 ROM for me? ^ ^

hi guys, I bought a BA recently, & I found this forum, HEAVEN!!!
I:
-play a lot of mp3 through earphone, TCPMP is my only player
-run on 3600mAh battery, battery life is my life
-play video clip @ <500kbps occasionally
-share file with other devices & active sync through BT
-do simple phone operations like sms & calling only, not using BT headset or what
-want stability
or which rom has least problem (& what are they?) apart from being free from any problems related to the above?
thanks for any possible guidance
generally, our WM6.0 or 6.1 is designed for latest handheld with vga screen, higher speed, better hardware so each ROM has its own characteristics... you should do trial and error... practices make perfect bro...
cheers
evo
PS:dont worry of making mistakes.. all the information that you need is here.. happy upgrading
I'm pretty new to BA like you are. What I've learned so far is that you need to try each ROM yourself and see how your device responds to it. I'm guessing that these BAs are like any other piece of computer hardware. You can have 5 devices all exactly alike and get 8 different responses as to which works best.
Some units have problems with Wifi depending on which ROM you use. That's been my biggest issue is trying to find a ROM that'll let me use Wifi without too many headaches. I've had mine for like a month or so now and I'm still flipping ROMs to compare.
Swampy just came out with a new one which I need to try, and Sundream mentioned he'll have a new one soon too. Xplode said he would a while back, but I'm still waiting on that one as well.
Unfortunately there isn't a sticky with a list of ROMs that list each person and their latest ROM. That would be incredibly handy and help clean up the forums a bit I'd think.
