Sounds & Notifications freeze - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Ok, I'm starting to think I'm crazy, because after extensive googling, and searching in this and several other forums, I haven't found anyone else with the problem I'm having. Here's the deal: every time I try to edit any settings related to notifications, my phone freezes.
I mainly see this when I try to go to the "Sounds & Notifications" panel, and try to access the "Notifications" tab, but it also happens if I try to change an individual's ringtone in my contacts, or other times.
A little background if it helps: I'm running a Cingular 8525 with the latest ROM, and the only thing I could think that might be causing any problems is FlexMail. I've got the latest beta release, and I remember reading that it does modify the tmail.exe file for some reason or other related to MAPI handling. But, I didn't have this problem when I first got FlexMail, just within the past week or so.
Has anyone else seen anything like this, or know what the problem might be?
Yes, I've searched the forum, searched everything, done any RTFM-related stuff I could think of, and tried the obvious soft resets to no avail. So please don't flame me as an idiot. I'm just a recent convert from years on a Palm OS that's trying to figure this thing out.

Well, it probably wont help you at all but FlexMail left my device nearly unusable: Freezes; standard today plugin for SMS/eMail did not work anymore; lost all my eMails (Inbox files on SD-card deleted); lost my FlexMail eMail configuration twice a week.. Then: No refund by the author. No excuses. No help. He just wanted my log files all the time. So have fun beta testing...
Still, your freeze could have another reason: check your /Windows/Rings/ directory: Any corrupted files? Open them up one by one (with the Media player) and make sure they work. Then search all your device for .wma files and make sure they are not corrupted. Would not know of any other reason right now ...

I have the solution to your problem as I was facing the same thing and no one could help me. You will notice the same not only with notifications but also in Phone, if you select options or video call options.
The problem resides in notes synchronization. I hard reset my device several times and synchronized items one by one until I discovered that when some default sounds that reside in teh documents folder (dogbark, ding, Alouette) cause this problem. Delete them and sync without them. The problem will go away.

found one..
Ding.amr
Well, sounds a little odd but I will try Thanks

Another Possible Slowdown Reason

This may be just for me and not affect anyone else, but I found a signifcant speedup solution for the sluggish WM5/Universal. Remember the 'ol "Notify Queue" problems with Windows Mbile 2003 where every reboot would add one or two duplicate notification events to the notify database? Supposedly it was fixed for 2003 SE (but it wasn't). And you would think it was fixed for WM5. But maybe not.
Again, maybe it's me only because of something funky I'm doing, but using Scary Bear's free Notification Check utility, I discovered over 200 duplicate notify events. I went and deleted them and suddenly my Universal was much faster, even at rebooting and syncing. Just to make sure it wasn't a fluke, I used the device for several days. The performance is noticibly and consistently better.
Every reboot still adds one or two events and the auto clean on bootup utlity of Scary Bear's does not work with WM5, you have to use the application and delete each one by hand (that does work). But keeping this notify database clean has helped me tremendously.
I don't know if it will work for you all, but it might be worth a look if you are havoing slowdown or (like me) calendar problems.
Why not use Pocket Mechanic or MemMaid's noticifation scanner? Gives you more system functions at the same time.
Eh, I had bad luck with Memmaid last time I tried it. It tends to clean up too much stuff, including stuff I don't want cleaned up
RE
cktlcmd,
MemMaid's notification scanner does not clean as effectively as Scarybear's one
Not sure about Pocket Mechanic since its not WM5 compatible at the moment

Thanks for these information.
I just tried Check Notifications from Scary Bear. It is as good as MemMaid and Pocket Mechanic. There were no new notifications detected by Scary Bear. All notifications that were shown on both Pocket Mechanic and Memmaid were also shown on ScaryBear. Again there was nothing new added to the notifications done with ScaryBear.
Another question, is Scary Bear FREE? When I was installing it, a message appered that I need to buy the application after the trial period. Now I kept looking for the registration page but I can't find it. Is Scary Bear FREE?
RE
Yes, Check Notifications from Scarybear is FREE!
If I look with Scary Bear Check notifications, I see numereous (>50) entries of sddeamon.exe, is it save to remove all the duplicates as shown in red?

It is used by the built in Voice Dialer utility. I don't know why it keeps loading in the notify database. Since I use Microsoft's Voice Command instead of the built in voice dialer, I removed the sddeamon link from the Startup folder and deleted all the sseamon's. I haven't had any problems - or have the sddeanon's return tol the notify database.
If you do use the built in voice dialing util, you probably can't remove the link from startup like I did, but you can probably remove the sddeamon's from the notify database. It shouldn't hurt things though I can't say for sure.
Removing all sddemon.exe seems to work just fine. I noticed a reduced reboot time. Thanks for the feedback.
Sorry to revive such an old thread, but how exactly have some managed to install scarbears notification free app on their device. I keep getting a message saying that the app is not suitable for my device, even after extracting the app from the zip file

Palm Messaging App Issue

I installed the Palm Messaging App that threads text messages just to see how it looked and wasnt really fond of it so I wanted to remove it. Well, It was unable to be fully uninstalled for whatever reason and now the hardkey for messaging doesn't list text messages, and the today plugin is still there and launches the Palm app.
Does anyone know a way to manually uninstall this, via registry or something?
Palm Messaging App
Worst case scenario ... which is what I've done many times in the past ... is physically delete the directory and all the files in it. Go into your Today settings and remove the app. You can try searching for the app name in the Registry and remove it manually (backup your registry first).
WARNING ... this is a last case scenario. Perhaps someone else has experience with this specific application. Perhaps you can list the application's full name and version. Maybe even where you got it from, in case someone else wants to play around with it and see if they can find a better way to remove it.
Good luck!
go to the buttos settings and change it.

HTC Home Weather Not Updating

Just got my Dash 3G, and I have found my first issue. The builtin HTC Home Weather app isn't updating. I have it checked to automatically update, but it doesn't. I have also tried doing a manual refresh, and still no luck. The only time it does seem to update is if I change my Homescreen, and it reloads. Anyone one having a similar experience? Any solutions?
thats a common issue with T-Mobile for years.
theres a few threads already constructed with possible solutions dating back to 2007.
just go thru the search function, see what comes up, theres way too many for me to post.
Later!
I had searched, but most of the posts were for other phones/OS's (6.0 instead of 6.1). Plus, I am not sure if the HTC Home Weather has changed since these other fixes were posted. I don't want to be mashing old fixes into my new phone unless I can be assured it will work. Probably means I will have to wait for someone else to be the guinea pig. Can anyone point to a fix they have confirmed to work?
Just restart phone and notice that it reloads. Myfaves automatically reloads no matter what homescreen you choose.. Have vista need to stop the sync
The problem is with connecting to the network, Mine refused to update until I changed my connection to always on, now it works perfectly. All you need to do is edit the reg:
This wont drain your battery as this is only a GSM network state flag and nothing is transferred, all it does is eliminate the connection wait time.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\ConnMgr\Providers\
{7C4B7A38-5FF7-4bc1-80F6-5DA7870BB1AA}\
Connections\*your connection name*\AlwaysOn = 1
There will be two *your connection name* to look for, one is Data the other Internet
Bupahs,
Thanks for the reply. I tried your suggestion, but still no luck. I am now having issues trying to get the initial update. (Had to do a hard reset). I've been looking at the registry entries at:
HKLM\Software\HTC\HTCHome\Weather
HKLM\Software\HTC\HTCHome\SlidingPanel\HTCWeather
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Chome\HTCWeather
but I don't know what to edit to try, and fix the issue. I've changed the State and Status values at HKLM\Software\HTC\HTCHome\Weather. These seem to control which message the app displays such as "Add City", or "Unable to download..", etc. I've noticed the WeatherApp.exe process isn't running in the background by default, and that the value of the key HKLM\Software\HTC\HTCHome\Weather\Settings\UpdateCmd\ seems to be a date followed by a time. (2009,7,19,12,21,43) Any suggestions on what else to look at? Do apps referenced in the Registry default to the Windows directory? I noticed CommandLaunch references WeatherApp.exe, but I get no action when I hit refresh. Just wonder if that had anything to do with it.
Do others have this working? Sorry for the rambling post. Useful input or suggestions are welcomed.
mine wont update either tried 3 different networks.

Internet Explorer Fails to Start

Hi. I have a new HTC Touch 2. On the 'Start' menu, there are a number of icons / applications. They all start with one tap. Except 'Internet Explorer'. The first tap on the IE icon, takes you back to the 'Today' screen, with 'Internet Explorer' briefly being able to be seen in place of 'Start', then the words disappear. However, the programme does not run. On tapping 'Start', again, and then tapping once on the 'IE' icon (again), it runs. This happens every time I want to use IE. Why? HTC Contact Centre suggested I place IE on the 'Programs' page and try that. It was the same. they have failed to respond to my response. Is there a remedy? Cheers. Dave
Although I can't help you solve this, my phone does exactly the same as yours.
The problem also shows up in email - when you click a link, you see "Internet Explorer" very briefly in the subject line, and then have to click the link a second time.
It does seem odd that a Windows powered device is insistent on using Opera by default, but I wondered if this was because IE was problematic.
Hi, dtmark. You may well be right. I figured that someone would have encounterted this before and know the solution. Maybe it's just you and I!
Thanks
Hi. It's not a best solution but .... If you reset a phone (Start-Settings-System-Delete Memory) problem seems as solved. But you must install all apps again and before deleting you must backup your phone. It worked for me.
Thanks, Ondrej. HTC suggested a hard reset which is effectively the same as you suggest. I did that, and it caused other issues and did not fix this particular issue, so I'm a bit reluctant to try it again. Thanks, anyway.

[RESOLVED] SMS Problem?

Well I'm quite enjoying WP7...but I have a bad problem.
If I send an SMS, it does not actually send until I reboot my phone. I've done a reflash twice but it still happens. I cannot figure it out.
Anyone else had this issue?
I'm going to try one more hard reset, and test it again before doing any customising or installing of apps, see if that works. If not, will have to go back to Android....
EDIT: The problem is with Connection setup. You need to finish all your tweaks with the xboxmod xap file, and then delete custclear.provxml from /Windows if one is still there. THEN run ConnectionSetup again and it should be back to normal
Wierd Issue
No problems here.
Do you have HTC Connection Setup installed?
How did the Hard Reset Go?
Android is not the Solution.
hah, i noticed it about three hours ago too, I just posted the following elsewhere
Going back to android as of twenty minutes ago after two hours testing when it turns out that the connectionsetup process of changing the phones identity to HD7 breaks my txt messaging - welcome back the dreaded 'messages stuck in outbox untill soft reset' problem.
Lost a days work today because i assumed the client hadn't replied, he (and about a dozen other people) all got txts off me at 10.15 this evening after i soft reset.
Ive checked, double checked and tripple checked, sent and recieved about three dozen txts, changed radio, hard reset, and every time, sms works fine, instant send/recieve, but starts getting stuck after the LEO70 to HD7 registry tweak.
Shame cos i was really starting to like it.
(EDIT - downloading and running the market HTCconnection setup doesnt fix it)
As an aside, the connection setup in most androids fails with mine too, though with a different problem, so i suspect the problem may actually be with the htcsetup app, which is the base of the registry tweaking hack. But at least with android i can manually make it work.

Bugger!
I just did a hard reset, and without doing anything else, SMS works fine.
But as you said, this reg tweak is breaking SMS...but why isn't the problem happening with everyone?
Grrrrrrrr
Will investigate more tonight after work...
i just had a thought, but ive removed wp7 now (need it working for teh morning) but heres what ill try next (if i can find teh time to try again from scratch)
flash it, unlock it, then delete the CustClear.provxml file we moved to windows and run the real connection setup from teh market again. it didnt help for me, but i hadn't removed the CustClear.provxml file, so it would have been installed again (perhaps? dunno, but worth thalf an hour to check out, ,, if only i didnt have a real life, , , , hehe)
good luck.

Great minds think alike...I also just thought of that while having lunch!
I'll try it in a little while...
Ok, initial testing confirms that it works!

SMS Issues
This is what seems to work for me, after countless days and minutes contemplating throwing my phone because of windows 7, I love it, very simple and straight to the point.
1) go to settings and put in your carriers apn - or connect through wi-fi
2) Log in with your live id from MS.
3) because of the restrictions we can't download from marketplace I could be wrong so use Tom XAP to install apps.
***what i've notice is when i deploy "XBMODDeployer.xap" and "Connection Setup.xap" that is when i started having mms issues where I would have to reset to get text messages that i send out to send. I can still receive texts but it won't send till i reset my phone.***
So my suggestion is to to all the settings to get it working except don't deploy those to XAP mentioned above.
I hope this helps anyone.

We've already found the solution. I'll update my first post.
All you need to do is run connection setup again, after deleting the custclear.provxml from /Windows
Good to know it was that simple. I'll have another play next day off.
