Don't hold out for Crossbow on the Hermes (on the Vario 2, at least) - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

After Crossbow was spotted running on an M3100 earlier this month, I fired off an email to T-Mobile asking them whether it would ever be available for the punters... Got a reply today:

Good Morning Mr Woods
Thank you for your enquiry regarding handset updates.
So far the new AKU versions have all came out with new devices and the upgrade has never been supported from eg 2003 to 2005. if this will be available for the Crossbow then I don?t know.
From a t-mobile marketing point of view I would say it probably won't be available.
Kind Regards

I've read that Crossbow most likely won't be AKU3 of WM5, instead being an entirely new update which will be released before Microsoft release their Photon OS, and I've also seen it described as Windows Mobile 6 - but yeah, now that there's shots of an M3100 running it, it can't be that far from retail release, so I was just wondering if you had/have any plans in the works for letting us customers get it for their devices!
Cheers in advance

... Oh well. :/

that sucks :-(

He also is saying that there wont be a AKU3.x at all for the Hermes, and I think that's a load of BS. What he's saying is, if we want the latest AKU's, we have to buy new devices, FU buddy (the t-mobile guy that is)!

I'd say we need to concentrate on getting Buzz to update his stealth rom dumper.

If anyone has their hands on a Crossbow Hermes, get in touch with us. Buzz is temporarily detained, but source code of grabbit is available if required. What's needed?
Use Mamaich's rom dumper, the wiki solution or Pof's solution if you can. If not, contact a mod.
I suggest that it's unlikely an official Crossbow upgrade will come for Hermes. BUT the Samsung CPU has been popular and I imagine HTC will base a number of upcoming devices on the architecture. If so, a possible leaked rom may be hackable.

A dump from WinCE is not as good as a dump from bootloader.
Someone should write a windows tool that communicates to bootloader over USB and does all the 'rbmc' commands needed to dump xbow.
Sleuth255: I see you've developed several apps... are you able to write such a tool if i give you the right bootloader commands? USB is seen as a serial device.

Keeping this thread alive and on top, maybe seen before, lots of Crossbow screenshots on this site:
http://www.pgcw.com.cn/newsdetail.asp?id=1366#here

How can we make it stealthy though? I may get my hands on a CrossBow equipped Hermes during MEDC 2K7 in May, but if I do, it'll most likely be in the exhibit area for only 5-10 minutes. This is why something like buzz's solution is so compelling.
I can certainly work on an app that will pull the ROM image when a device in bootloader mode is connected up to a PC. Having this certainly increases our chances if someone does manage to get one for a few hours.
I'll see what I can code up, but IMO we should also pursue buzz's stealth solution. Go ahead and point me towards the commands pof.. I can start with the instructions you left for tsuishui.

Reading the message with open mind and not only with the eyes I read:
1) The man answering doesn't even knows the difference between OS and AKU. He speaks about 2003 and 2005 as AKU difference: ISN'T AKU, is a new OS release!
2) The same fellow doesn't even know the NAME of OSes! 2003 was right but we have Windows Mobile 5 an NOT 2005!
3) He is a man from the customer service, or, worst, probabily the answer comes from Tmobile marketing man, with little or no knowledge about the future of windows mobile devices, he knows about the past but seem really short sighted abut the future
4) The answer is the only answer he could give: if he will say "may be.." or "we will see" everyone will start asking WHEN, boring him from is well paid chair, so is better to say "no", beacuse "no" was the answer given since yesterday and worked! They don't sell devices, the sell radio time and traffic
5) In the Operators market strong agreements exists between MS and operators and marketing doesn't drive, they follow!
Overclock the brain reading messages and spokesmen transcripts from companies, not only eyes and be carefull when asking something simple but revolutionary to a large and with good revenues company: 90% of answers will be NO

Is there any other WM2003 ROM other then Tmo 4.00.10??

I've heard about OZONE...anyone used it before and does a comparision between OZONE and the Tmo 4.00.10 ROM?
building roms
go here http://cuba.calyx.nl/~jsummers/ROMkitchen/ and build your own rom
Ozone was the first release of 2003. I believe it to be a base MS 2003. Had some bugs but IMHO I think it was the most stable minus the alarm bug, which plagues non Phone Edition 2003 devices. More so I find most of the new ROM versions floating around very suspect (i.e. their source/not those who gave them to us here but from which they came before) particularly 4.00.10! boot loader killer, snarky behavior, not being able to install any other version, etc. The first version never dropped a GPRS connection on my device. Every ROM version up has been temperamental in this department. I haven't had a chance to ping and group all the aliases of heavily pro 4.00.10 posts to see if there is any common agenda, no I'm just spreading rumors but would be fun to discover a little cyber software counter intelligence  where's Tom Clancy when you need him  anyway happy hunting. I also am particularly interested in comparisons against the new T-Mo radio upgrade avail on US devices just to see if it plays a similar roll. Remember this is all just conjecture, but fun non-the less. Who know with a little group effort by all us here, we can control the purity of intent with our fellow forum friends. Great job XDA-Developers and to all us users lets keep it pure
A little speculation is just fun don't anyone go psycho and start pointing fingers  if some sinister plot is truly uncovered a cleaver post here or there will help moderators to quietly electronically solve the problem 8) facts+diplomacy the ultimate %#@K you 8)

We will have an official WM2003 from T-Mobile

As stated at
http://www.ppcw.net/index.php?itemid=1662
in an official comment
T-Mobile was the first carrier to deliver the Microsoft Pocket PC Phone Edition and is committed to the support of this product. We will be providing the 2003 upgrade to our customers.
The standard Pocket PC 2003 version, used by many Pocket PC PDA's, doesn't include the needed software and hardware to operate as a phone. The additional time need for integration and testing ensures the highest level of customer satisfaction.

So ... we're looking forward for this.
About the 4.01.00 I think T-Mobile will have here, on xda-developers, an excellent testing bed.
Thanks T-Mobile
thanks t-mobile...
It's a good point... why do they go on with all the secrecy crap when they've got the best test bed in the world right here. We're getting their test ROM's anyway, but it seems we're only testing something that's already been tested and discarded.
Can someone tell them "we told you so" when they release the final and it's got glaring bugs?
I suspect part of the reason is that they don't want to have to lend tech support to those who have issues with beta products.
Upgrading ROMs isn't exactly something I'd recommend for the casual user (Although, XDA users obviously are higher on the nerd factor, so I shouldnt say we can't handle it!)
Think about how many people come in here asking how to fix the PPCPhone they've just toasted doing a rom update. Combine that with the problems they've had with SD card erasures, and the wireless data people at T-Mobile would be awful busy fielding questions.
That being said, it would be kinda cool if they released the roms to xda-developers.com and let there be sort of an "official unofficial" extension of the beta program!
I think one reason they don't want to do a 'public' beta would be to discourage casual or non-technical users from trying to upgrade their devices. In case there are folks who don't really understand what they are doing, T-Mobile could end up with units with blown radio stacks, etc. This could create more work from them than it might otherwise solve.
That being said, it would be cool if you could 'apply' to a beta program.

your on your own there buddy, I would never deface my car with a sticker of any sort
Also, on the secrecy bit here, I fall somewhere in the middle. I don't think they should release the test version to the general public (for the general reason that 99% of end users are Idiots and the extra support load would be gruesome for the support personnel) but it would be nice for them to communicate accurate information about the status of upcoming upgrades to the support personnel so I don't get answers like the one I recieved earlier. I see no reason for them not to tell the support personnel "Yes we will be releasing the pocketPC 2003 upgrade, but it is still in testing and we do not have any indication of what the release date will be" and permit them to pass that on to folks who ask the question "When will the Pocket PC 2003 Upgrade be availiable?".

Totally agree with you. However, internal communicaitons are typically bad in siloed organizations with geographically dispersed service centers such as T-Mobile.
Anything new?
It's been a month since I have heard anything new on T-Mobile releasing WM2003. Has anyone heard anything?
I tried 4.01.00 and had problems with SD erasing and phone lockups. I reverted back to 3.14 and will wait for something a little more stable.

Hmmmmmm... Why does everyone have problems but me with the SD card erasing :?:
MrDollyMaker
That is a very good question! MrDollyMaker
What type of card do you have?
Does it have a name or ID?
I found root problem to the SD erasures was in the way the TMO and AT&T radio Stacks were addressing the hardware and memory locs for the SD Card and renaming it every time there was a change in cell towers or going into ROAM modes. :x
The problem stopped one I formated and named my SD card in an outside reader and ensured the device registry read that port under that name and not assigned it a new name. So no more SD erasures since I did my 4.01 update.
PS: I sent all the logs, the apps and info to both carries, but no reply as of yet!
Grrrrr! Just had my first sd card erasure in forever. I hadn't had that happen since probably the 4.00.06 version!
Oh well looks like a friday night of pocketpc reinstallation fun for me
T-Mobile Windows Mobile 2003 HOAX
I could care less about the who, what when where and why of the realease lateness. It is obvious to me at this point that they dont have very good developers at T-mobile for the Pocket PC release. The last release had a lot of the T-mobile software removed anyway.
At this point. As a developer and a scienent being I'd like T-mobile to release a beta to some people. My phone is unstable. I have had several handset replacements, because they think it will solve the problem. Nope.. Nada Zippo.
I'd be AFRAID to get an XDA II at this point.
I use my Sony Erisson T610 most of the time now.
The fact that several other providers have already released the Windows Mobile 2003 several months ago is pretty darn good evidence to stupidity or serious problems somewhere.
You make the call as to which applies.

It's a Lexar. Well both are. I have a 32mb and a 256mb card. Both were formated with Softwinter Storage Tools and used the backup Fat option, so that might be what prevents it. It's named "Storage Card" by default. File system is FAT32, sector Size 512Bytes, Cluster size 2kb.
It's an awsome program that even defrags and tests the cards for errors.
Never once had an erase problem yet. 8)

T-mobile Upgrading to WM6????

Check this out...
http://www.infoworld.com/article/07...om/article/07/02/13/HNtmobilepushemail_1.html
"The company is looking at the new Windows Mobile 6.0. "I don't know yet if our Windows Mobile 5.0 handsets can support 6.0," he said. "If so and if we can use our Web site to allow customers to download the new operating system, then maybe this will be a possibility. I guess the answer is if we can upgrade easily, then yes."
So T-mobile might upgrade the Wizard to WM6...am I reading that right?

I'll bet money on this not happening (officially.....)
Since WM2003 & all the WM2003SE fiasco with the lack of updates for devices that would be easily compatible you have to understand the market; WM6 and the cost of a new device as opposed to WM6 software development on a legacy (slow & poor camera resolution) device?
Believe me it won't happen - I have a nice stetson here waiting to be eaten.......
Andy
But there has never before been an update this close to the version before with the exception of WM2003SE (which was very hardware orientated and thus made upgrading either not worth it due to lack of features or impossible) but with WM6 it is very compatible with WM5 as it is still a 5.x.x build version making the new features worthwhile without really requiring any new hardware. I would say chances are increased with this as not really any new driver development is necessary nor do T-mobile have to alter their applications to work with WM6.
Not happening
My brother is in IT for T-Mobile and he informed me that they will not be upgrading the MDA.

Sorry not putting you down, but just cus one person has been told that it is not going to happen does not mean that t-mobile will do a U turn!!! It would cost them more money not to as we will still play with WM6 and it would be cheaper to give out a base. Cus dumb people will flash the phone and mess it up and t-mobile will have to replace them!! Cus if i mess up my phone i will just claim a new one, and they have to give me a new one!! Cus all you have to do is damage the phone so they replace that way.
I have received somewhat reliable news that T-Mobile US WILL support an upgrade to WM6 for the Dash.
Again, this is somewhat reliable, not 100% so don't hold your breath (not that you would seeing that it's for the Dash and NOT the MDA).
well what i dont get is, that the news item says about if it would work with the PPC, the t-mobile people should come on here and see that it does work, and they would not need to do any work on it! Just putout a bare bones WM6 rom and the people here would do the work to make it better! (I am sure that MS would be happy if the operaters are)

WM6 available to Atom Life

This free update will be available to all current Atom Life users, and will involve either a download from the O2 Web site or a visit to one of its service centers.
The upgrade will change the operating system on the Atom Life from Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC Phone Edition to Windows Mobile 6 (WM6) Professional. One significant improvement in WM6 is the ability to receive and send emails in HTML format.
Available from May 12, the Atom Life will become one of the first commercially-available Windows Mobile products to sport the newer OS. Atom Life handhelds sold in stores from June onwards will also be preloaded with WM6. In comparison, Dopod, which will be acquired by HTC, will be upgrading its selected devices to WM6 in July.
Furthermore, the enhancements in the O2 Atom Life like O2 SMS Plus and O2 MediaPlus have been tested on the new OS, and will still be available on the Atom Life after the upgrade.
In addition, O2 said it is testing WM6 on its upcoming Xda Flame as well, and that the rest of its products to be launched in 2007 will also sport the new OS.
At press time, O2 was not able to confirm if its other handhelds like the Zinc and Graphite would get the WM6 upgrade as well.

Damm it. It already close to end of the day here and still no news from O2 site!!!
14 May 2007--As of today, the update to WM6 is still unavailable on O2's Web site or at its service centers. O2 has informed CNET Asia that this is due to a delay in the approval process with Microsoft. The company hopes to release the update before the end of the week, but was unable to be more specific about exactly which day this will occur.
refer to CNET asia website::

It's getting closer: the page for WM6 ROM upgrade is up at the official website:

I can see "Get the latest patches, utilities, software and upgrades here". in O2 site.

Wow, this topic is getting hot. I was contacted by CNet Asia about O2 delaying the release and hoping to tell you guys but it seems like someone else beat me to it.

Pester T-Mobile UK for ROM Release!

Hi Guys
Now that HTC have said they are releasing a WM6 upgrade for the Tytn and other operators (see here)
I think it is time we started a mass pester on T-Mobile UK to release the Vario 2 Rom and Rom Updates, I have had mine since October of last year and so far it seems all other operators are providing the original rom and the rom updates except T-Mobile.
Think a massive email spam from all Vario 2 users on here would help to put the pressure on, if not just annoy them enough to stop giving us the same old answer....
Here to complain
I tried that a few weeks back, and they gave me a flat out "no" and the main bulk of their message was that if I wanted WM 6 then I would have to purchase a newer device.
What a load of drivel from them, they are being ultimate t****rs, I have sent another spam mail to them asking what is going on!
I am doubtful I will get a decent reply. What is annoying is HTC are providing the ROM royalty free to the operators! Why are the end users not seeing the benefits in a rom release from them, even the original rom isn't being released as of yet. I know we have the hard work of Cluster, JJ and others creating WM6 but it would be nice of T-Mobile UK to support their users!
Sorry to rant just getting a little miffed off with them!
I know the feeling i've got both the mda's on t-mobile uk and i've seen a rom update (not wm6 mind up the aku 3.3 update) for the mda vario but not the vario 2, so to get wm6 like i'm running on the hermes i had to use a rom that i downloaded from xda. if i have to send it back to be repaired i'm buggerd as t-mobile dont have a rom download for it so i can download to wm5, looks like t-mobile uk are supporting the ameo now and the newer devices
I have send them a uber snotty email I wanna know why there is a lack of support for the device after only 9months!
A response and its not a no or a yes
Thank you for your further Email.
There has been discussions regarding a ROM update for the MDA Vario II to upgrade to Windows Mobile 6, however there has been no clarification as to whether T-Mobile will be providing this as yet.
Any ROM update that is available for any of T-Mobile`s SDA and MDA range of handsets will always be updated onto the following T-Mobile run download website, the link for this is as follows:
www.tm-phonedownloads.com
I would recommend trying this site periodically for any updates or possibly enquire at a later date for any developments.
I am sorry if this is not the answer you were hoping for.
If we can help further please do not hesitate to contact us.
Best regards,
David McAnally
