Want to buy: Cingular 8100 or 8500 - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

These phones are SUPER hard to come across! Basically its the 8125 or 8525 MINUS the camera. My boyfriend is in the Navy and due to security clearances is not allowed to have a camera phone.
Does anyone have one they are looking to get rid of or any idea of somewhere that has one for sale?
I've checked ebay and craigslist and all of that, no luck. I have a friend who works for Cingular (one in store, one at corporate!) and no luck with either of them, they both just said they are "rare" and would be hard to locate.
Thanks!

Remove the camera
I take it that your looking for this in due to workplace restrictions on camera phones? If so, would i work to remove the camera all together? For the 8125 it is fairly easy, just pop the upper back cover off and the camera disconnects.
Odds are you can find a cameraless cover for the back as well from one of the parts dealers.

Thanks! oddly enough the moment i posted this message everywhere I could think of, I found one on craigslist (in a totally diff city/state as me) that was willing to ship to me, and also one popped up on Ebay. If anyone is interested in an 8100 there is one on ebay right now ending on the 2nd LOL

Cingular usually only sells the 8100/8500 to businesses (as part of a B2B deal) because of the no camera restriction. I am unaware of any retail outlet that sells these versions.

I actually noticed it on the "corporate' site (i logged in with my work email for a "discount") for $249 after a 2yr contract, etc. I am looking for one as an Xmas gift, so signing a contract is really not much of an option, as the person I am buying it for isn't currently on a GSM provider, he'll have to sign up on one after receiving the phone. Such a pain! I had to pick the most difficult gift ever, right??

I've been looking for 8100 covers since it came out, without any luck.

Just the cover or the actual phone itself? Maybe contact HTC about it? I didnt really look for covers, because I figured disassembling the phone was... a bit much. It sounds (from above) to be pretty easy though, now that I located an actual 8100!

if you know where all the nozzles are, it's easy... In the process of finding out I of course broke one
I contacted nearly every HTC agency around the world, some don't even respond, some just say they don't have the phone and so no parts. Cingular (the only ones selling the cameraless Wizard) said I should contact my provider... and so on... a real hassle.

A trade for a slightly used Magician

I bought the I-Mate JAM for my wife a few months ago thinking I could teach her all the cool things it can do like my PDA2K but she still doesn't like it. I was thinking about posting it on ebay, but wanted to give everyone here a chance to make me an offer before I posted it. Is anyone willing to make a reasonable trade or offer for it? She really likes the new RAZR's so I am open for a few days then its off to ebay for it.
post an offer here or email me [email protected].
I will post pics later today as it does have one or two scratches.
Here is a pic
A scratch on the display is a no-go for me. If she doesnt even want it, why couldn't she use a screen protector the time being? I have one on it and are using it.
I sent it to here while I was away and she didn't know how to put it on. The scratch isn't that big either, the flash on the camera kind of makes it look alot bigger.
$200
I'd be interested to know what you get on ebay for it.
I'll be putting mine on there at some point soon With a 1gb SD card, Spectec WiFi card and DeskDock. Not sure how much to expect though. :S
My wife has a RAZR and aside from being thin an light she is quite disappointed with it. As always no other phone can beat the user-friendlyness and features of a Nokia.
I am sure my wife will be disappointed with it also. No offense to women, but with cell phones its always what's new and small.
The cons are as follows:
- wake up alarm wont work if the phone is off.
- fonts are too small (for bad eyes).
- though one could input various numbers for one contact, when viewing, it displays each number as one individual entry.
- the phone's battery can only be charged via the supplied adapter and/or the usb cable (but only when connected to a PC). it does not work with my universal usb charger which i use for my s100 and bt800.
- assigned sms tone does not work if an international sms is received.
i wonder how the motoQ will be like in practice.
How do you manage to scratch the screen like that?! I had my phone for 4 months before my screen protectors finally came in the mail (expansys.com.au being slow, long story). I used the phone all day every day, let my girlfriend at the time use it and my dad and it doesn't have a mark on the screen!
Did she accidentally use a pen instead of stylus or something?
As I said before its not as big as it looks, the flash made it look bigger. But the scratch was from her nail when she was getting them done and tried to click on something.
Fair enough. I could imagine if you're looking straight down at it you'd barely notice. Still, unlucky!
My guess at a value would be slightly over half the standard retail price. I reckon I'd pay that. In Australia Jams sell for AU$900 roughly, I'd give you $500 but I have no money!
Ebay Australia has some in "as new" condition going for AU$600.
Hi , I will buy it for 200 USD. Agreed ?
rexxxx,
Common man Jimmy-Bish just offered me 377.191......
I was really hoping to get a trade w/some $$ becuase I will have to replace the phone as soon as I sell/trade this one.
Alfred, what's my new price (AU$900) compared to the US price? I put in that theoretical offer based on the Australian market at the moment.
(Oh, and it wasn't a rock solid offer. like I said, I have no money... sorry!).
Jimmy-Bish I was comparing it to the 500 you said, I know your not interested but that is a more reasonable offer.
ILL TAKE IT????
IF you'd sell it for AUD$400 including post ill take it it dose come with all chargers and stylus and box and wat-not dosent it?

are you still interested? sorry i haven't checked this post in a while and i never posted the jam on ebay either. i got caught up in the BlueAngel release of WM5.0 I personally have the PDA2K.

Insurance for Cingular 8525

Hi,
Cingular will not insure this. Anybody can recommend a 3rd party insurance to cover this phone. Any experience in dealing with them as far as fast claims and other info is most welcome.
Thank you.
Damn it doesn't? Cingular 8125 did, I remember mine got damage and they sent me a replacement for it.

You're good for one year as far as Cingular warranty is concerned.
The only reason I'm get from phones from a carrier.
I've had three replacement HP6515 and one replacement 8125.
PDA phones just have problems, screen alignment, buttons not working, freezing, stuck headphone tips e.g.
Cingular told me the same thing. I believe this is new. They used to insure smartphones, but now they are not. I better be careful with my full priced 8525!!
cingular has never carried insurance on their smartphone, i remember not being able to get one for my moto mpx220. There is a 1 year warranty period but that only covers defects... HOWEVER there is a website that i know of and they are trustworthy that will sell sperate insurance on mobile devices, phones/laptops, etc..

Really? It must of been Sprint and Verizon only then. I know that for sure. They charge ~$6 per month for insurance. I guess Cingular never did that. I have recently switched back.

i have been with cingular since 2000 (swbell wireless back then) and they have never offered insurance for high end phones.. which i think is lame.. they only offer insurance on your low end phones and its like $4 a month. why in the hell would i want insurance on a $100 phone then pay $50 for a deductable.. doesnt make sense. your only options is a 3rd party, i know some homeowners insurance will cover it, but then you are talking an even higher deductable..
i havent personally used safeware.com but read some really good reviews on them somewhere. And i do plan on using them one of these days..
I had my 8125 insured with Safeware. I just got my check now for it, about 1.5 months after the claim was made. I had insured it for $500, and I got the full $500. They were pokey, and I had to call them constantly to get updates, but they did do what they said they would. So I'll keep my insurance with them..
Pick up my 8525 tomorrow.. I dunno why, but it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack when it comes to the 8525 in the detroit area..

bout time you come join us over here Skot.. and from what i understand most retail outlets are hard to come by the 8525, i ordered mine online, was the easiest for me
Yeah, I've been without my PDA phone for far too long. Can any of you guys imagine getting stuck with using a bloody Motorola C139 for a month and a half? For a temporary use for phone, it's great, but long term use, no thanks..
I'm not surprised that the retails stores are having a hard time getting them. What I'm wondering is if it's a supply not meeting the demand problem, or online resalers just happened to be first in line in getting them.. I guess I was lucky.. The third store I called had one, and it was their last one. My buddy who bought one spent a Saturday calling like 10 different stores or something, no luck. Then he ended up calling a shop just south of where I live and managed to get one.. He loves it..
So, now, I can't wait to get it. I'm ready to start hacking it to bits the best I can.. And maybe this one I won't drop and break.
yeah
HTC the company gives u a 1 year warrenty on products as long as it is not "ur fault" PDA fones have alot of problems, most can be fixed with help from these forums alot can't be. I've had my 8125 7 months now and i just needed it to get replaced. I had these problems:
Screen alignment : (fixed by a patch of loosening screws on the back of the screen)
Stylus not staying in: (placing a towel ontop of the unit and putting alot of weight but not enuf to break the unit on it for overnight)
Unreponsive keys on the keyboard: ( i just got used to dealing wit em )
Touch screen gives out: (time for replacement)
Called up the number supplied by a cingular representative and they ensured me of HTC's warrently sent me a replacement fone and everything with no questions asked accept about my account and the IMEI number and some confirmation things you need to do on the fone. The only thing I didnt like about the replacement fone is that it didnt come with a battery or new battery case cover.

that sounds like cingular's warranty by mail (HTC wouldnt have asked about your account, maybe only proof of purchase). Yes the 1yr warranty is great if its not your fault.. but what do you do if it is your fault? That is what we are covering on this thread. Most cell providers offer some kind of insurance on the cheaper "dumb" phones but not the expensive smart phones (this still dont make sense to me). So in order to insure your device you need to seek a 3rd party such as safeware. They will also fix your phone or send you a check in the event your phone is damaged past the 1 year manufacturer warranty..
**edit**
Im not plugging safeware.. they are just the only 3rd party i know that provides insurance on this level for mobile devices
yes

yes shogun your right, cingular pointed me to www.safeware.com
they have insurance there for the PDA fones but its quite expensive and i frankly think it isnt worth it at all.
im not sure how much it is now but it was like $25 deposit and if your fone is stolen you gatta pay some outrageous fee of like 250-350 dollars depending on the device instead of the norm 50 bucks.
i dunno how much it is now i havent bothered looking. heres a website tho since i kno thats what u lookin for. hope it helps.
I'll tell you what then, tell me where you live, I'll steal your phone, and you tell me if it was worth it or not, especially if you don't have the funds available to replace it right away.
Sorry, but for some poeple, it's worth it. I paid $60 a year for my 8125. Not even six months after taking out the policy, I broke my 8125 beyond repair. They gave me a check for $500 (as that's what I was insured up to when I crated the policy). Okay, sure, it took a little while, but considering I only spend $60 to replace it, it was worth it.
Eventually, when I become rich and can afford to drop $500 to replace my phone without thinking twice, it won't be a problem (hell, even if I were rich, $500 phone, $60 per year, it gets destroyed, I ultimately only end up paying $60 to replace it).. Until then, I like having that kind of protection that Cingular doesn't offer.
One of the claims to fame for Safeware is that there's no deductible, and that they cover your device.
I was thinking that someone had mentioned another site besides safeware.com in this thread, but now i don't see it. Was I seeing things or did someone edit their post?
I too had my 8125 insured with safeware and switched mid-year to my 8525 when I upgraded, but if you go to the safeware.com site now you won't find a selection for a PDA device like they used to have. I wonder if they are no longer offering new policies on equipment like ours? I thought the cost was reasonable for the coverage provided (about $60-70) for a year, but it would be a shame if they aren't offering insurance products any longer on PDA devices.
safeware
I got safeware. $500 insurance with no deductible for $60 / yr.
better than my homeowners could do. better than lockline (cingular) because no deductible. covers memory card too.
good luck.

Crappy AT&T 8525 Refurb...

My six-month old Cingular 8525 now has the loose stylus problem so I phoned AT&T for a replacement. (I know this sounds kind of anal but I also know a lot of perple who hang out on xda-developers are particular about their devices...)
To make a long story short, the refurb looks like crap! The black stripe between the screen and keyboard has scrapes on it, the seam between the back grey plastic casing and the black stripe has obvious screwdriver damage where the casing has been pried apart, and the back side of the screen has lots of scrapes from sliding open and closed.
The only good things I can say about the refurb are the LCD overlay looks new and it is AT&T branded. I have not even bothered to install a battery and turn it on.
The phone I take such good care of looks worlds better than this one. I took it to my local store and they agree with me and have noted the account so when I call the warranty department they will hopefully send me a better one (why not just send a new one and get it over with )
Is my experience typical? When I was with Sprint I remember getting a couple of refurbs and they looked brand-new.
EDIT: My local AT&T store has been great to work with, making calls to the warranty department, etc. but have not offered to replace the phone (yet?)
No your experience is NOT typical.. I have a Refurb 8525 and it looks BRAND new.. nothing at all is wrong with it.. what you CAN do is call them and tell them something is wrong with the one they sent you and they will send you another one.

Yes and if memory serves me right, there are standards in the official HTC Service Manual for refurb devices. I seem to remember reading very precise criteria on what is acceeptable in terms of blemishes and what is not.
The service manual is available for download at my web link below.
Mike
I have gotten my 8125 replace last year and it look brand new. I just recently got my 8525 replace and it also looked new too.
I returned my 3 month old Cingular 8525 because the Micro SD card slot wouldn't work anymore (physically not holding the cards in). I received what appeared to be a brand new AT&T branded 8525, no problems with it. It even had the new ROM flashed to it, which had only been officially released for a week or two at that point.
No problems with my refurb either - looks and responds like brand new.
I wouldn't say it was intentional they shipped out a very much used machine - but I would definitely question their QC that one that badly used slipped back into the consumer base. Contact a manager and if no help, keep climbing the ladder until you reach someone who WILL help.
Good luck!
A local store manager looked at the phone and noted the account. I called the warranty folks again and after being transferred several times they are sending me a new phone, which I should get tomorrow. I wonder what OS will be on it?
EDIT: I just booted a brand-new 8525 and it came with WM5 and the 1.40 radio. Time to flash away...

Want to buy good condition Wizard

My beloved MDA dropped today...it still works, BUT, the usb port is loose, and Assurion doesn't have any to swap out under insurance...they offered me the Wing (gag me!). I am seeking a working Wizard with a solid usb port...locked or unlocked (hello lokiwiz)...
I will not respond to "you can have mine for $300"...I can get one on ebay for $160 or less.
If you have moved on and want to part with your WORKING Wizard, please contact me.
"you can have mine for $300"
Thanks.
You know, my mama always said::
"EVERYONE LIKES A LITTLE ASS, NO ONE LIKES A SMART ASS"
I'm serious. I am willing to pay the $110 insurance would charge me, up to about $160-ish, which is what I have found as the asking price on ebay
...if anyone has an old, but WORKING, Wizard, and you have upgraded to a new device and don't know what to do with the Wizard, please contact me. If the condition is good and your price fair, I would be very interested in getting it.
Thanks.
Y not take Wing?
It is the same thing as MDA but just thiner. Oh well - tastes are different, although I have Like New MDA that I am using currently and not really want to move on cuz it works for me at this moment. If it happens I hear from some1 that wants to sell, I'll pass that onto you.
Anyway - I wouldn't recommend eBay to anyone when it comes to buying MDA. Friend of mine bought 1 - supposedly refurbished perfect cosmetic condition and received BEATER!!! Scratches all over the phone, screen damage, opens on its own - I mean he was looking to get the deal and got bad beater phone. Later on he got brand new Wing from Tmobile.
MDA story was completed by seller not responding to his e-mails and he filled with paypal a dispute so he got the money back and never sent the phone back to the seller. He sold the phone as is on the ebay for 170$ ... with all the explanations and everything...
I bought mine on ebay and is LIKE NEW (Or even new!)
It depends on who you buy the products.. There are many sellers and many are legit!
If you havent bought yet dont say that...
pm'd with offer
If you go through eBay, just avoid "rob3474." I got a Qtek 9100 from him that was supposed to be "like new." Suffice to say, it has a lot of wear and needed some attention before it would function semi-properly. Still having some issues with it a month later...
I sent you a pm with an offer
Still looking...
I have not been very active since having surgery. I got some great PM's but a couple fell through, so...
I am still seeking a working, reasonably priced Wizard-preferably a G3. My main concern is not with cosmetics, I just need a well working Wizard with a very SOLID usb port.
I have been quite busy with doctor appointments and physical therapy, so please be patient with me, I will respond to PM's.
I am thinking about upgrading shortly, I have a fully unlocked G3 Wizard. Will let you know if I do decide to upgrade. It has typical scratches on the body, usb is solid and it works great.

Well I had a potential sale fall through, so I am again back looking for a good condition (solid usb port, gently handled) Wizard. Preferably a G3. I am willing to go as high as $150 with shipping, and will pay with Money Order or Visa Gift Card, or if you bank with Wells Fargo, a direct money transfer. I will NOT send cash (I do not trust the USPS and want to have a recourse if the payment is lost in the mail), and I cannot use Paypal because my account is frozen due to some supposed fraudulent activity (I suspect someone tried to hack my account). If you have an MDA in good condition and want to sell, please PM me.
Thanks.
Ill trade you my MDA for the wing that you are going to receve.
It is in good shape. (although I have to be honest I dropped it once or twice)
It was mostly held in it's case untill I lost it. then I bought a black plastic cover/skin for it. It doesn't look like I just bought it. The plastic cover I bought for 10 buck makes it look like it.
I could use an upgrade, but I'm not due untill september.
I love my wizard. it is very durable, and well worth the cost; so I won't be upset or offended if you don't take the offer
I hope you find what you are looking for. if not PM me

different model replacement for hero through insurance?

hi ppl,
I am now on my fourth hero through orange UK, having had the previous ones replaced due to.faults with the phone's earpiece.
I am aware that orange's policy to offer a different model replcement after the third replacement, so I am thinking, if my phone breaks again(which I could just make up that it has), what model are they likely to allow me to choose from?
Will it be from the same price range as the hero or will they allow me to choose from something like the desire since its the only other phone that orange offer that runs on HTC sense? (which is why I chose this phone anyway). obviously I wouldn't settle for a tattoo.
any advice from people who have been offered a different model through orange care is much appreciated. also any ideas on what I should say to tie them down to giving me the desire?
thanks a lot

Aaah, Orange, who are replacing my Toshiba TG01 for the 3rd time tomorrow. When I called in I got disconnected loads of times, and eventually got through to sales (who were the only people to pick up inside 10 mins), who then put me straight through to a CSR. The CSR was absolutely useless, barely understood English and was trying to follow a script ("my phone doesn't turn on" - 'ok, can you go into the menu and reset it' - "..."), and eventually decided that I didn't own my own account and refused to help me any more. After repeatedly asking for a manager I got put through to a supervisor and got into an argument with him because although my charger and handset were faulty, Orange would only replace one at a time, would only provide refurbished kit (the failed unit was a damaged refurb device) and I would have to call back for the charger replacement. Eventually I gave in, and the replacement was dutifully shipped to the wrong address.
</rant>
So I wrote in an angry email, and a few hours later one of the email support team called me back. She then agreed to provide a brand new handset, charger, case and battery, and mentioned that if you had more than 3 replacements inside the first 6 months of owning the original device then Orange would offer you a replacement model of a different type and equivalent to what you were replacing. However the models they offered were really nowhere near the TG01, so I am taking a new one and selling it.
As for your case, I would suggest you write the email support team a very detailed explanation of the problems, including dates and so forth, mention the sales of goods act, and at the very least get a factory new Hero you can then sell towards the cost of a Desire. It is very unlikely that Orange will replace your 10 month old Hero with its latest shiny new super-phone at no cost. This is like asking BMW to replace a problematic 1 series with a brand new 7 series.
@mcall_r: If you manage to get a Desire out of Orange do let us know, but I don't rate your chances.
My wife had a similar situation with Orange & a Blackberry, replaced at least 3 times. In her case, on possibly the fourth replacement, they couldn't even offer the same model due to lack of stock. She got bounced round between various people & the only thing that came across consistently was that all they'd offer her was inferior old junk. Some of the staff were exceptionally rude, particularly when she got upset at one point. There was more chance of Santa dropping off a replacement phone (& no it wasn't Xmas), than of these people offering her a replacement that was at least as good as her faulty phone.
She wasn't being unreasonable. She'd have even taken an inferior phone but they couldn't offer her one with gps (though a couple did claim certain models had gps - only when I checked & pressed them they changed that to 'well it has gprs...' Can you believe it? I mean, wtf?)
The last person insisted there was nothing they could do if they had no stock; they could only offer her what the system offered & there was no way for them to know when they'd have more stock in of her existing model.
The next day she called into a local Orange shop to complain before calling trading standards. The guy in the shop was very helpful (& she hadn't needed to mention trading standards; think he was just a nice guy). He told her they'd got stock in that morning & essentially that the woman she'd spoken to the previous evening had lied to her, as she would have known stock was due in.
I know some of the employees are decent human beings & others who might be borderline will be under a lot of pressure, but as a whole, I'd not piss on Orange if they were on fire.
Oh dear,
Im sad to hear your stories about orange's poor customer service (in some departments).
Funnily enough I actually work for orange, in an orange shop, and we in retail have little to no contact with what goes on in the call centres which is why i decided to ask on here to see if anyone else has had similar experiences. Also the fact that I do not have the hero on my employee contract, only on the personal one I took out to get it.
I find that through 150 if you go through to the correct options (for instance handset replacement the options are 1,3,1,1) you get through to the nice helpful people in Darlington, North Tyneside or Newcastle, who actually most of the time know what you are talking about.
I cannot say the same about the call centres in India. Their main job is to provide support for accounts, for example adding bundles and changing service plans. They mainly read off a script and have little experience with the mobile phones themselves so do not know the ins and outs of them. Ergo them thinking that GPS and GPRS are the same thing.
So what is the email address for the email support team that I can try and complain to?
Out of curiosity, i am on orange with a 3 month old hero and the earpiece is broken. Is it a common thing? Can i get it replaced for free? Finally i cancelled my insurance and a day later the earpiece failed, did you go via phone insurance? sorry for the questions but i am raging quite a biit that it happened after i cancelled lol
The email is a page on the site, you have to go through the pages and enter some details to it to the right team. Mark it for the attention of Misha, I found her very helpful.
Insurance or not, you are covered by the sales of goods act, so a 3 month old phone should be fit for purpose. Under that you should be able to get a replacement under that.
Both orange and the company i have got the phone from have said they do not provide a replacement without insurance? I have to send the phone to HTC which i have done with my magic many times, this means no phione for me fora few weeks total BS Tbh
