got my 8525 today - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

well i got it today and its a very very nice phone.. looks great.. however i have noticed some quirks that makes me wish i didnt sell my 8125/wizard..
First thing that i can not stand.. is i am in the St. Louis area.. i get a U and data works, but its slow.. it seriously took me 7 minutes to get to the dslreports speed test page (and used both My Isp and MEdia Net connections). The other thing i have noticed is that i put on a screen protector... well it caused my screen to flip out and started doing all kinds of weird things, would open the start menu at random, etc. It also wouldnt allow me to touch/tick on the screen.. They keyboard layout is nice.. but if you are coming from a wizard the keyboard will screw you up, the layout is completely different...

Did you upgrade your previous sim card with 3G one?
Hi, I was just wondering if you did in fact get an upgraded sim card. 3G version. I read somewhere on one of the posts that this makes a heck of a lot of difference in speeds. I requested one when I purchased my 8525 last week, and while I don't live in a UMTS/HSDPA area(at least not yet) I went ahead and updated anyway since I sometimes do travel to 3G areas. BTW, it was totally free? Anyway, as a WinMob 5 newbie, I was just wondering.
Also, as a side note: I have yet to purchase a screen protector, but I did purchase a monaco hard aluminum case. This thing rocks! Good luck with your issues.

Not sure what the problem is with your data connection there. Where I am at present I only have regular GPRS (old old Sim) and page loads within around a second and test takes maybe 5 to 10 seconds with 50kb/s which without UMTS is fine.
Mike

the sim card thing is one thing i was wondering.. i got 2 phones today, my 8525 and a dumb sony ericsson for my wife.. mine came with a blue 3g card, same kind of card they have been giving out all year.. however her non 3G SE came with a white 3G card, its apparently new.. i wonder if i need one of these cards..

Well, my 3g card is primarily white(approx. 75%)with a blue top. Also has a flaming 3g icon on it. Hope that helps. I totally agree with the previous post, I only have GPRS here at home, and my pages load up very quickly. I'm quite impressed actually. Perhaps one of the senior members might have some input for you?

your sim sounds like the one my wife got, mine is still the old school blue one... sounds like i need to get a new sim then..

What AKU version is shipping on the 8525? I have been looking at upgrading my 8125 in for the 8525. Also did they offer any upgrade specials? (ie. what did it cost you to walk out of the store, $$$, contract extension, etc.)
Thanks,
J-Man5

go get a new sim card. my pages come up pretty fast and my speed test show an avgerage of 700k

it cost me 431.41, i ordered mine through the business number since i am an AT&T employee... also since i am an employee i got free overnight shipping, ordered mine friday around 7pm, got it today before 3pm... and i will give you the aku after i hard reset.. now my phone is locking up, wont even open the start menu.. something funky is going on.. however i tried the softkey combo's to hard reset and they will only bring up the bootloader
*edit* im an idiot.. i was reading L/R softkeys, but wasnt comprehending it.. i was hitting the buttons on the side.. im a freaking moron this evening

and FYI its AKU2.3... i have done a hard reset and still getting crap speeds.. this test was 45k

I'm getting much better speeds even on just GPRS (when the connection works, which is highly variable). Got over 200k on DSL reports in the (northern) Los Angeles area over the weekend. Have the shiny new 'flaming' white SIM.
So I'm not the only one surprised by how old the version of WM5 on the 8525 is? I thought it was supposed to be one of the first devices with AKU3+--with BT PAN instead of DUN and all that...?

so after my hard reset, i tried to get on the net.. wouldnt connect.. so i installed all my software that i normall install, rebooted the phone again (about the 20th time today) then noticed i connected pretty fast.. so i jumped on the net and ran a dslreports speed test and got 949k, i am finally impressed... i guess i will see what happens.. technically they never announced that 3g has been turned up yet... so maybe it was a network thing earlier.. but i will say the sim played a huge part of it cause it was more responsive after the sim

Well, I'm glad everything worked out for you. Now if you could just make a donation to my paypal account, all will be well! J/K
Seriously though, I was kind of surprised by your low/slow speeds prior to your resetting your device/software. So much so, that I decided to run my own tests. And what I found out was interesting to say the least. It appears that with the larger files that I download/test, my speed seems to increase. Is anyone else experiencing this with GPRS. While I ran out of time, my (I think it's the 1M) last test clocked in at 214K. So I am very happy for now, and look forward to visiting my parents in Texas where alot of the major metropolitan areas have UMTS. ie Dallas, Austin, Houston.

Speed on 8525
I am in the DC area and was having major issues with the speed. I called customer support and they told me to change the settings to use the MediaNet connections and reboot. After that the thing flys---

i found a registry setting last night that will add the band's tab in the phone settings.. in the bands tab you can choose between UMTS and Edge... im glad i found this cause when my speeds are crap on UMTS i can fix it to edge and still use the net reliably... i will just have to deal with the ups and downs till the network here in st. louis is "officially" turned up.. if anyone is interested in this file i made a cab for it so you can just install it on your phone, here is a link to the thread:

What were you using earlier?

i have tried both media net and my isp.. sometimes my connection works, sometimes it dont.. but i think its just my market area

Can anyone post the complete settings for using isp.cingular instead of wap.cingular?
I have the unlimited PDA Connect Plan, but I am using wap.cingular right now. I tried to switch to isp.cingular but then the 8525 will not connect.
My thought the settings are (CASE SENSITIVE):

Password: CINGULAR1
APN: isp.cingular

3g Web Browsing

Quick question when using pie to surf the net does it hang for a while on locating the web page or does it work instantly.
I have just got the Tytn and looking at web pages using 3g is really slow and really not very usable
I am using tmobile uk 3g network
after inputting a web address it hangs on locating for up to 60 seconds then loads the page very wuickly after that
Anyone any ideas
Thanks
Chris
Very strange. I dont have this problem. The first time a UMTS connection must be established and it is 5 or 6 seconds. The next request are very fast. May be you have established the DNS servers manually?
I get that, browsing using GPRS is painful on t-mobile
how about using opera 8.6 http://opera.com
I too have this problem with T-Mobile, On connecting to the internet over GPRS or 3G GPRS it will hang for some time, wether its internet explorer or other internet services I have on the device (HTC Universal).
As I have web and walk I just leave it connected, but its not ideal. I wonder wether its the T-Mobile servers working slowly to authenticate the handset for internet use.
Its been fine upto the last month or so.

I have exactly the same problem with an MDA Pro. Fine until a month ago now slow on 3g. GPRS though is fine.
I'm actually quite relieved to find that it isn't just me !

Its also become random now, somtimes it connects and its instant, and actually fast even on normal GPRS, other times it can take over a couple of minutes to locate and open a page.
Doesnt seem to matter whether its a full signal or not, whether its after a reset or anything, totally depends on what T-Mobile feels like.
Maybe it cant cope with the number of web'n'walk use now.
Absolutely agree with you as you have described precisely what my symptoms are.
Hopefully if enough people complain to T-Mobile about it, they might actually admit there is a problem and fix it.
Maybe the delays are because http traffic is proxied
Maybe the delays are because http traffic is proxied....
It looks like Orange are operating a proxy or some other form of protection. A few weeks ago I discovered that they had something in place to restrict access to adult sites, wouldn't have bothered me other than the site I was trying to visit was xda-developers.com.
Even followed their link to get the site unblocked and got a nice little responce stating "Your request has been actioned and the content is confirmed as only suitable for customers over the age of 18." before getting their filtering disabled.

Exactly how i seem to find it, either it works or doesnt. There seems to be nothing u can do either to make it work, reboot, change from UTMS to 2g ot what ever. Nothing has any bearing and its most annoying, tbh i wish id never got the universal now as its a huge piece of junk, or at least the t- mobile ones are. Ive used a 02 one and its just soooooooooooooo much faster in everything.
im using the latest rom and even after flashing its still sluggish before anything is installed.

Having been in a T-Mobile 3G area most of today (Loughborough, Leicestershire) the service itself has been as quick as ive ever used it, getting around 270k on a fairly medium signal.
The times it hasnt worked (long first time loading) it has returned to me with a server or IP error. I just assume that as web'n'walk is unlimited, but has restrictions on use, that the servers are overloaded trying to monitor or prevent certain services working.
Its been picking up a bit lately tho, im suffering the waiting times less and less each time I try. Tho 3G UMTS has really sucked the life out of my battery today, it may be best I keep it on 2G instead.
Haven't noticed any of these problems on T-Mobile in and around London. Have you all removed your "Content Lock"?
As mentioned earlier by Taz69, connection may be slowed down by the T-Mobile servers checking to see if you're 'allowed' to visit various sites?
I disabled my content lock ages ago using 'My T-Mobile' on www.t-mobile.co.uk - give it a go if you haven't already, it may make a difference?
My content is unlocked and always has been so it isn't that umfortunately.

So, Im not the only one  Do you get the problem where it can take 30+ secs to switch between GRPS and 3G too?
Also, I spoke to T-Mobile about slow speeds and lack of connetivity - I can hardly get a signal in my office, although I am sat across road from a T-Mobile mast!!!
They said that as the mast across road was congested, my device was connecting via a mast further away (I like the idea of it not trying to get on a congested mast, but distance causes problems with connectivity too  )
Other thing they pointed out was, if you call them with the postcode that has the problem, it gets logged...enough logs and they escalate it (I'm up to 6 logs in my postcode now lol)
How can I tell if it's switching? Mine says "Connected (GPRS, 3G)"
Since (re)removing the lock it does seem significantly faster though
If your connected via standard GPRS then the connected logo at the top of the screen will have a G on it, if your connected via 3G GPRS then it changes to a U (for UTMS).
Ive always had a delay swapping between the 2, yesterday my 3G signal kept dropping so it would switch back to 2G, and it kept doing this so much I couldnt get any internet for about 5 mins. I know you can turn the UMTS band off, but this makes buying a 3G phone pointless.
I have content lock off since day one, and its always been fast. Today theres been bo problems with the service at all, fast logon, good speed connections etc.
Seems a random thing lately, but its only been lately. Its been fine for a few months before, so hopefully its somthing there working on and it slowly getting sorted.
The problems could be down to the pay and go users Web and talk, for a max of £1 per day they get unlimited internet, see t-mobile for more info, this could be eating servers bandwith within certain areas, i was able to logon this morning, but after 9am i keep getting page cannot be found errors, The little u and the 2 arrows show me I'm conneted but i cant load any pages, I hope this is the case and t-mobile sort this out asap
I have had the same problem now for around a month. I am using Opera 8.60 and it takes around 1 minute to actually resolve the host name. Sites with adverts on take forever. I contacted T-Mobile and they said that the signal in my area is really good and there shouldn't be a problem. They told me to take the sim card out, wait 30 seconds and then reinsert it, and then try.
I have not yet had any luck, and it seems to be the same throughout the country, as I was in Cornwall over the weekend on holiday and it was just as bad.
P.S. I am in Liverpool, and I have a full 5 bar umts signal.

Data speeds

Please save me from Cingular support hell!!
Although I think I may be doomed...
I have a Cingular 8125. Have Summitter's 2.25 (with CF2), phone info shows as follows
IPL 2.24
GPL 2.24
GSM 2.25.11
OS 2.24.10.1
ROM 2.24.10.1 WWE
Radio 02.25.11
I am located in Washington DC, I usually have full signal and I am on EDGE, not GPRS, but I get crappy data speeds. When I first got the device it was a little better but now it is horrible. I went to DSLreports to do a speed test but after 1 minute of waiting for their page (which is mobile web) to load, gave up so I am not sure just HOW slow it is.
I called Cingular a few weeks ago and they said everything was fine. I know this is not the case because I was in Hawaii on vacation the last two weeks and I was getting better speed there!!! so I think it may be the network.
However, before I call them does anyone have any tips or tricks to try or perhaps an idead of how to get to someone or a Dept at Cust. Service that actually knows what to do.
THanks!
I have had this a couple of time on T-Mobile in the UK, stupid question but have your tried a soft reset and then opening a page again, if not possibly a hard reset and make sure you try your connection before installing any third party software or tweeks.
In my case it definitely wasn't the network as I had my SIM card in other phones with no problem.
When you say crappy speeds, what exactly are you getting?
Ever since the Edge network issues, I've been getting between 80kbit/s (typical) and 120kbit/s (high end, good day).

Last speed test I got was 55kbits. I did see this post shortly after I put mine up (http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=61990) that talks about changing DNS servers.
I tried it and it seems to have greatly decreased the time it takes for pages to come up. HOwever, this seems to be a function of the DNS lookup, not the time it takes pages to actually load which is a function of the actual speed, which is still pretty low, especially compared to you.

Vario II (T-Mobile) problem re-connecting to the Internet

I have a problem reconnecting to the Internet using GPRS/3G on my T-Mobile Vario II.
It (usually) connects to the Internet first time without problems (although recently even this has been so-so) but I can never (rarely) connect a second time after I have disconnected.
I've posted about this before and been advised to: (1) don't disconnect (but this runs down my battery and the phone gets hot); and (2) stop all running programs since one my be interfering with the connect (this sometimes works - but usually not).
I have discovered a full-proof way of reconnecting is to use Communication Manager to manually disable my phone and then re-enable it - but this is a pain.
So, I have a few questions.
1. Does any other T-Mobile/Vario user have this problem?
2. Is there any way to cure my problem?
3. Is there a better workaround?
Cheers.

Hi Bobby, I had exactly the same problem with mine, I even phoned T-Mobile up a few times and they went though re-entering settings which worked once but then wouldn't connect again, after searching I came across a thread that mentioned a setting which needs to be turned on which is HSPDA, I phoned up T-Mobile and they put this on my account (it dosen't cost anything) and it now works perfectly every time plus it is a lot faster, I am getting between 750 to 1300 kbps where I was getting about 250-300 (before the connection problems), hope this helps
Thanks for the advice. I'll give it a try.
I am amazed to discover that HSPDA is not enabled by default by T-Mobile. What's that about?
I phoned T-Mobile and the support person confirmed that HSPDA is not enabled by default and has to be requested and takes "up to 24 hours to become enabled".
So I'll check tomorrow if this cures my problem.
The T-Mobile person claimed that this would not effect my problem and suggested I disable 3G and connect via GPRS.

It won't, the two are unrelated. I had the same problem a few months back and it miraculously cleared up. I wish I could tell you I knew why, but I do remember that I uninstalled some applications and removed a few things on the today page. All I can suggest is giving it a try and see what happens. Maybe post a list of your apps and I'll see if I recognise any?

Don't know why they do not set up HSPDA as a default, maybe they are trying to restrict the usage? I did read on another forum that T-Mobile can be reluctant to turn HSPDA on and it may take a few calls to them to actually getting it switched on properly
When they turned HSPDA on my problem with not connecting was solved instantly while I was on the phone to the tech guy, he had rung me back on my landline and got me to do a soft reset while speaking to him and it has been fine ever since, he did go on to say that this had nothing to do with my problem and that it is not any faster than normal 3G in most cases but it has solved it and it is much faster, obviously just a coinident then
Before hand I did wonder if it was due to any apps I had loaded but I did a hard reset at one point to bring it back to the T-Mobile default settings and the problem was still there

How do I check if HSPDA is actually turned on?
Hi Bobbyelliot
How's Glasgow?
Best way to check HSDPA is to run a speed test by running DSL Reports in your browser:
http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1
Works on a PC as well as a speed check if you pick higher file sizes.
On your Hermes:
speed
300-400 kbps = UTMS
500+ = HSDPA
Cheers

OK, of those, the only ones I've used are eWallet and MS Live Search, which are still installed and running fine. I think I may have had a trial of pRSSReader which is no longer on the device so it might be worth uninstalling that just in case. I'm not convinced it will make a difference but it's worth a try.

One suggestion...
I had only one application disabling any re-connect: evenbyte.com PHone Security System (v1.1.2.2) - after deinstalling everything worked fine again.
Now I am using UTA3 - works.
Might help me then as well. As when im in a 3g area my net access is painfully slow yet in a gprs area i get around 51kb but hsdpa speeds would be better of course!
Do i have to be the account holder to ask them to?
tmobile dns failure on 3g
I have had a t-mobile vario 2 for the last 5 months. when I first got the phone I was excited to get the hsdpa activated and quickly phoned up tmobile and got through to a tech guy who activated it. I didnt really notice much speed improvement and tmobile only shows the 3g and not the h for hsdpa, but I was pretty happy with my speeds of around 70kbit/sec (tested through http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1. I downloaded fieldtest_157 which showed that I was connected to hsdpa but the values showed through hsdpa cqi status were very low.
About 1 month ago I was suddenly unable to go online whenever my phone went into 3g mode, my phone would show it connected but wouldn’t find any addresses. I was only able to when it switched to gsm. I phoned tmobile to get the problem fixed. they said it was a known issue with the phone and made me permenantly switch my phone to the gsm network. I was basically told that my phone does not support 3g and hangs on switching from gsm to 3g for no apparent reason and that they were working on the problem. they must have done something on their side because when I switched to phone back on to auto network switching, I got gsm and 3g connectivity and downloads but not hsdpa (checked with fieldtest_157)
next day because I was unhappy with the download speed I phoned tmobile and asked for hsdpa reactivation. the first level who answered made me hang on and reactivated hsdpa. same problem cant download except on gsm switch. rephoned tmobile and got through to another 2nd level tech guy and explained all my connection problems.he said that my phone had never been hsdpa connected and connected it for me. what do you know Im suddenly getting 950kbit/sec speeds and hsdpa cqi status shows all high teens or 20's. for some reason my battery is lasting allot longer and 5 months after getting the phone Im happy. moral of the story is to download fieldtest_157 from:

and check hsdpa status because either lots of bull is being told to tmobile customers or there are some pretty stupid people working there.
I was getting lots of dns failures (except in gsm) and getting really fraustrated. I was going to ask for deactivation of hsdpa. Luckily the technician I spoke to (about the tenth person in 3 days) that eventually got me connected, new his stuff. He tried to trick me into admitting that I was using my phone as a modem for my computer and only connected me after I denied it. after he changed something on his side, he made me pull out my battery and do a soft reset. Everythings now how I expected when I bought the phone. It might sound like conspiracy theory but I got the feeling that he only connected me when it sounded like I knew slightly more than the average Joe. My hsdpa connection has been faultless ever since. Getting consistently high speeds even with 1 bar. On 3g!!
I had low fieldtest numbers before my proper activation. now all much higher teens or twentys
keep phoning tmobile until the problem is fixed!! and speak to someone who doesnt have to read a set of respone instructions and has some real knowledge.
Hope this helps

Moderator edit: Links fixed - now working.
This story is worryingly familiar to me. I can relate to every part to it, up yto (but not including) the last part about getting HSDPA activated. I suspect I am in the same position.
I'll download the utility and check my connection - although right now I can't even get 3G on my handset (I have also been told to use GPRS instead of 3G).
Thanks for the info.
BTW can you post a full URL to the Hermes utility to check if I have HSDPA activated? The link above does not work.

Update on my Vario/T-Mobile Internet re-connection woes
I've tried a few things since last posting.
I removed pRSSReader (no change) then removed Skype (no change).
I had previously phoned T-Mobile to enable HSDPA (which they claimed they did but people on this forum have indicated they might not do at the first request).
My phone (Vario II on T-Mobile in the UK) will still not reconnect to the Internet once I've connected and manually disconnected.
Oddly, I recently downloaded a small program to change my radio from GPRS to 3G (and vice versa) and if I do this then I can reconnect. Also, if I switch off my phone (inside Comm Manager) and then switch it back on I can reconnect. Obviously, resetting the radio clears my problem.
So I'm sort of stuck.
Finally, 3G is still not working in the Glasgow area.

I just got back from my T-Mobile shop. They have sorted the HSDPA connection and every thing works very well now. It had not been enabled despite two or three previous reassurances by T-Mobile staff that it had. This guy really knows what he was talking about!
3G now working in Glasgow area. Slow to connect but then OK.
But I still can't disconnect and reconnect to the Internet without resetting my radio.

I've just swapped my phone (the camera didn't work on the original so t-mobile swapped it) and I had this problem last night as I was reconfiguring the new replacement phone.
In desperation I thought that something can't have been set up right during the install so after unlocking the extended rom and reruning the AutoRun file the problems seems (fingers crossed) to have gone away and I can reconnect without problems. However I am have had a couple of unexplained lockups.
Now I can't be sure that this has definately cured it and it wasn't a problem with the 3G network where I was (Stevenage) at the time (11:30pm). Also I first noticed it after I used the phone as a modem a couple of times (have you ever done that?) but it may have been doing it before (I did a lot of soft resets last night as I was installing software)
Of the programs you mention I have eWallet and OneNote but I had exactly the same ones on my old phone with no problems. The only difference I can see between the two setups was the First Boot was interupted on the replacement device and I installed many applications at once and changed the DNS settings immediately (n.b. the DNS settings remained at 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 following the 2nd Extended ROM install).
If I have any more problems lockups or reconnection issues in the next 2 days I'll do a hardreset.

Problem with Hero on T-mobile UK

Hi!
I have the handset for few weeks and for couple of days I have a problem at the times to connect to internet. Look like Hero try to send data but there is problem with downlink. Some times when you turn off and on the internet it seemsd to be working at the times ....
I have already updated the software to the newest from T-mobile but still the same problem.
Any ideas ???
Thx
Well i have the same problem with Telus in Canada I thought it was a network problem but now you have me wondering if it is a defect.
same here on T-mobile UK in London... I noticed a reboot solves the problem most of the times... But I am not too sure why it happens in the first place. I noticed it seems to happen in very crowded locations rather than when I am somewhere with not too many people. Every time I install a new radio I hope to see the problem disappear, but it never really does. Quite disappointing... :-( Hope for a fix in the near future though.
I've been getting the same problem.
The HSDPA icon will change to 3G, then the connection will stall completely. I'll have to put the phone into airplane mode and back again to restore it.
T-Mobile tried fobbing me off with my contract didn't allow high speed data, to the next person telling me to just try it in a different post code, they're not aware of any problems, with finally the most recent tech support person telling me T-mobile is aware of a HSDPA and 3G problem that should be fixed in 5 days, please bare with us.
W*nkers.
I definately feel like I've bought a red herring with this phone. Or should have at least got it straight from HTC. I'm reluctant to put a new ROM on there so soon after getting it.
In Canada it seems like it is a network problem. I went out of town about a hour and data worked, came back and it did not work. Phoned and was told it is a network issue and to bear with it they are fixing the problem in a couple days. It seems odd that the same thing is happening in two different across the ocean at the same time though. Who knows if it is the same problem though.
I have the same issue with Orange till this weekend when the phone won't work on 3G at home at all even though it gets a signal. The 3G netwrk is down in my home cell area for a week so I'm stuck on 2G. 2G speeds on some sites are even better than 3G as it doesn't stall on the downlink.
I had this issue but it seems to be OK now. Probably a network issue.
Hi !
It look like the blame is the simcard
Someone suggest something and it give me idea. I have put bit of paper betwen simcard and the thing that hold it and then just a bit on top of it and does seem to have problem. It look like Hero have very sensitive simcard holder
Good luck
All fine here!
I'm in south London, UK and never seem to have a problem with the internet. I'm extremly impressed as on my bus journeys I frequently stream like radio without much problem. I hope things improve.
I'm also in south east london
I get awesome speeds with HSDPA, but not so great with 3G.
I generally stream from last.fm and it pretty much stalls when on 3G. Web-browsing on 3G alone is also not that great for me.
This sounds like it's more a problem with the coverage than the phone though (althoguh it's interesting that a reboot/re-enabling mobile net fixes it).
Couple of things to try:
1 - Download a speed-test and see what speeds you're getting.
2 - Check coverage here: http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/services/coverage/street-check/
im having problems to , i spend half the time on Wifi and only use mobile network if im out and about, but im barely getting 3g and im in heart of england (birmingham)

How Many People Are Having MAJOR PROBLEMS with DATA on T-Mobile HD2(Stock Rom)

Because this is F'ing ridiculous. I'm soon going to be on my 3rd HD2(T-Mobile is shipping me a new one tomorrow) the previous 2 just kept dropping my data connection. After about 3 hours of LESS of use my data would go out and only way to fix this is by doing a soft reset which is absolutely ridicules considering the damn thing just came out not less then 3 weeks ago. Am I just having bad luck or is there really an issue here that either T-Mobile or HTC need to address ASAP?!
UPDATE
ok now im starting to think it was T-Mobiles network not being able to handle all the new data over there lines or what not. Its been a full 2 days and I'm getting great data coverage. I'm getting my replacement HD2 tomorrow via UPS since I called T-Mobile and told them about the problem they said they would send me a new one. What should I do now. Its such a pain to have to set up my phone the way I like it but then again I dont want to risk having another data problem.

Dude, you are having some bad luck!
My phone is perfect. Well, it could use a keyboard, but otherwise...
same problem
I am have same problem..t-mobile 3g sucks i guess
It appears to be a common problems with HD2 users on the other side.

I was on the phone with T-mobile a few hours ago for an hour because my data connection would randomly drop. When I try to click it to turn it on, it would make me start a new data connection, wtf?
If I turn my phoen off and back on, it wouldn't even connect, with anything. The guy at T-mobile made me do a hard reset. My connection is fine now, but this was a hassle. I also notice Im not getting any better 3G service (as he said he update my network with better coverage).
I have the same problem with my phone. I have to constantly turn the data off and back on to get connection.
Both of my phones are doing it. They were both replaced recently too. Wish I could vote twice.
same here even if i have a full 3g bar data wont stay stable
No issues here.
been reading and stuff and more than half of the people with an HD2 have this BUT THERE IS A FIX search for it just like I DID
if you can't find it ill just post the cab latter when I got nothing bette to do.... haha lol

That's great for you if you have a problem lol...I didn't when I was on stock. Glad to be on Elegancia now...pretty good s***.
No issues here. Bayarea.
The other day, I was in the Dade County Fair in Miami and my cell phone completely lost all connection (not just data, but cell signal as well). It would randomly come up again for a few seconds before dropping. I soft/hard reset, took the battery out for a few minutes... nothing seemed to work, so I called TMO USA the day after to see if maybe I was in the middle of an outage, but nothing and the guy from tech support couldn't help either... I had better service with MetroPCS....
The data connection dropping happens the moment I set foot in my home. It switches out of 3G and the phone starts displaying Edge, which is a lie because there is no network connection at that time (try to update weather and it simply spits out a connection error). I'm gonna try to flash something else and see if that works (I am on stock right now). If I cannot get this solved by the end of this week. I am switching to Sprint and getting myself a TP2 (since I need SIM card capability in my phone).
I did notice one strange thing though. I used CleanRAM (level 3 option) at one point at home when I was with the faulty Edge, and it switched back to full 3G. So, at this point, I am starting to believe that TMO put something in the stock rom that either hinders, or makes the connection lousy...
I guess I put away my ORD for as long as I could with this phone
To put it lightly, T-Mobile plan sucks in my area, I had to switch to AT&T ever since then I havent lost any data connections.
Although I just moved to EnergyROM the other day since I just like that ROM since I used to use it on my Touch Pro. I never had data issues with the Stock ROM. Only time I had a data issue is when there was an outtage in my area and then even the phone didn't work.
I could not get my data connection to stay on more than a few minutes at a time until I loaded up HD2Tweaks. Since then, it's been running perfectly.
It's odd...however, if your phone's only problem is just switching between Edge and 3G try setting the phone to only run on 3G...under Settings->Wireless Controls->Phone->Baseband->WCDMA...
If your phone is cutting out...that sucks lol...not a whole lot I can think of except for the fact that the laws of physics apply in this case...the higher a frequency is, the farther it travels with less energy but the less it penetrates the environment around it. This is in part caused by higher frequency waves becoming extremely tiny, with over 1900mhz having waves that are smaller than a drop of water.
AT&T 3G uses 850mhz and 1900mhz for their 3G. Its lower frequencies don't travel as far, but they have more towers to make up for coverage area and the signal will penetrate.
T-Mobile 3G is 1700mhz/2100mhz meaning that the slightly higher range, while seemingly insignificant, when coupled with less towers, will cause the far end of the signal range to have too great a degradation of power, and not enough penetration to be viable.
Along with this is the fact that many government agencies still operate on the frequencies that T-Mobile purchased, due to not having a backup for their systems. Enough power generated within a frequency range will raise the noise floor enough that your phone's signal will get cut off. Sounds crazy, but it does happen quite often. You ever hear static on your radio? Analog is great in that you can lose data and still function. So government radio's are perfectly okay with a little bit of background noise.
However, signals that broadcast an analog translation of a 1's and 0's, function like a digital connection. When packets of information are lost in significant quantities, or in this case they are known are "frames", your phone cuts out.
Signal interference is becoming more and more of a problem in the cellular world. Satellite communications have had to deal with this problem for years. Only now are enough cell phones being packed into a single area for the noise floor to rise in significant quantities.
Just my $.02

for those who fix the problem can you post how you guys did it. i tried changing data to just 3g didn't work changing to voicestream it didnt work
I'm using HD2 since 25 march. Stock room. So far no problems.
