3G/UMTS: online and phone call at the same time? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I was under the impression that once you are connected to a 3G/UMTS network, you can be online and make phone calls at the same time?
I just tried it but my TyTN told me to end the phone call first before connecting. I have the U on top and my speed test (dslreports) indicated a 662kbit/s rate. Any comments?
I believe I have one of the older 3G SIM card. Initially, I didn't think I even had a 3G SIM card and had some rep send me one of the new ones (with the flaming 3G on it). However, since my TyTN showed the U and had pretty decent download speeds, I assumed it would be 3G capable.

Donno what's going on .. I get email emails notifications during calls all the time (DirectPush) ... I am always connected ..

All I can say is I have made phone calls while surfing on 3G.

Yes ... But with my old one .. I wasnt even able to get on the UMTS network .. in your case it's working .. you can try getting a new 3G sim and see if that helps .. prob would cost you around 25 bucks ..

I was under the impression that e TyTN was a class A device, meaning it can connect to data, or make calls, but not both as the same time. At least that's definitely the case with GPRS/EDGE connectons. If it's not the case with 3G, maybe GPRS is trying to connect in the background?

I am definitely connected to UMTS/HSDPA all the time and regularly make simultaneous phone calls...
Note that GPRS/EDGE does not support simultaneous phone/data connections. If you're not in a 3G area, you've got to choose one or the other at any given moment...

I live a little north of San Francisco which is a 3G area. Considering the U in my display and the good data rate, I am pretty certain that I am connected to 3G/UMTS. However, I tried several times today to sync my emails during phone calls but every time I am told to finish the call first

If it doesn't say "3G," it's not...

It's just a regular 64K SIM ... you can get a new 3G SIM (blue colored) and see if that helps ... it's really wierd because you are able to get on the UMTS network already ...

I switched over to the new 3G card today and when I got home I tried to simultaneously be on the phone and online but once again I get the message to end the phone call first.
Are there any other settings I need to watch out for?

Can you please post your phone band and APN settings?
At this point .. I can only think of 2 options really:
a. Return your TyTN and get a new one .. if it's possible. ..
b. Try upgrading your RadioROM to 1.16 or 1.20 and see if that helps .. If you need to return your phone then this might be an issue ..

o2 3G

Hello, without meaning to sound like a complete idiot, can anyone tell me if I will automatically get 3G connection on my o2 account, or do I need to contact them to enable it.
Because every time I try to make a video call, the Exec tells me that 3G is not available.
Or do I need a new SIM Card?
They sent me a new SIM Card with the Exec, but I have not fitted it. Do you think that I need to insert and activate it?

I also got a new SIM card when my Exec arrived and I had to call O2 to get them to activate it. They said this would happen within several hours, but in fact it happened within 5 minutes. The old card stopped working at exactly the same time, so don't go out without them both once you've called them!
You can only make video calls when your phone has locked on to the 3G network. You'll know when this has happened because you'll see a 'U' symbol next to the phone signal strength icon instead of the 'G' for GPRS. (U stands for UTMS.) Or, go to the phone dialler pad and check the network name.
Most people seem to struggle to find a 3G signal though, so it might all be a waste of time. Certainly here in Sussex I haven't found a signal yet.

I contacted O2 today to ask the same question (as well as get my new plan confirmed).
I was advised that I would need a new sim, which has been ordered and should be sent out soon, and once that sim arrives, I need to contact O2 and get them to enable the new SIM and disable the old one.
What they then advised me is that 3G would be used whenever it is available.
It'll work in Liverpool where I work, but from what I've seen, St Helens, where I live, won't work just now but is planned for future expansion although there is no date.
To be honest I doubt I'll use it too much as I permanently activesync with my laptop via Bluetooth and use that as an Internet connection.
Once a decent push email solution has been delivered I'll probably rely on 3G a bit more.
In London, I get U everywhere I go, don't know about other areas. It was rather amusing when the train passed Hither Green the U changed to G for about 10 secs then switched back to U again. So does it mean the transmitter somewhere near Hither Green doesn't support 3G?
it could just be that the signal wasn't strong enough to support UTMS.
For example, if I go into the office at work I usually end up on GPRS, yet if I go near a window I can use UTMS just fine.

Check you O2 coverage
I am right on the edge of a coverage area however i am in dark blue but i get a very week signal from O2s UMTS network and a very strong signal from their GSM network.
I have real problems with using a data connection as i keep switching between the 2 networks and there is a delay while it does it. Also MSNM is really bad when it does this. At the moment i have set my Exec to just use the GSM network and ignore the UMTS one.
well I ordered a new sim from o2 to get 3g on my jasjar, and they sent me a normal gsm one (I didn't notice at the time, ended up hard resetting just to make sure I hasn't disabled it somehow!) So check when the SIM arrives that got 3G written on the side with the bubbles and not GSM! I infact ended up going to the O2 shop and getting one from there.

call can't come in while data always on

I just switch to 3G instead of 2G. I want to experience the high speed internet suffing via my handset.
But I found the problem is that the phone call can't came in if I using the 3G data. Not even transfer to security services. Just a "Busy tone".
Check with the service provider and they are now checking with their technical dept to see if they can found the problem.
They said that the call should be able to come in because the phone call channel is different to the data channel. :roll: :?:
Anyone experience the same problem?
I experienced the same problem with my CHT9000. You may change the setting to GSM then call can come in when you using GPRS but you can't enjoy the high 3G speed on data transmittion. Anyone has better solution?

It is interesting. I don't have this kind of problem while I am using GPRS. But it happen to my new network provider (3G).

At least you have GPRS/EDGE working and as a result it is absolutely a network provider issue.
I talked every detail with a guy in my Net. Op. and seems can be solved by "tricky switching something on" but they could not make me believe that this is not thier mistake. Because Class B phones MUST suspend the data flow and accept incoming calls for the technical point, only class A phones (no retail ATM) can make data flow and GSM talk at the same same.
GPRS is 2G, EDGE is 2,5G and same tecnique as 3G, only speeds are lower, so I beleive if u use 2G suspend while incoming calls your Net.Op. can solve the problem if they want :wink:
I have this strange problem with my vario II.
I am using Tmobile GPRS on both 2g and 3g network, If I am using the 2g phone works if If am using 3g phone doesn't work if I call it, the phone rings but doesn't alert me. The most annoying problem I am having is the phone switches between 2G and 3G if I am in a call the phone goes silent can't hear anything the display shows the call as connected and around 5-10 seconds later the phone drops call drops. This happens even if the data connection if not active.
What is the deal with that? anyone else have this problem.

Works perfectly on T-Mobile UMTS for me. I did flash the Dopod 838Pro ROM though.
will flash the dopod rom in the morning. I am currently using the imate rom, and the tmobile rom the device shipped with had to many slow downs so it had to go. if this fixes the drop out issue I will be happy if not the phone will be in its box till a rom update. got the phone cheap so don't really mind. nice phone/pda apart from this issue in my line of work can't afford to miss or drop calls.
so is this a hardware or a software issue then?

Voda v1605 running the Voda Blackberry Client, so either 3G or GPRS (where no 3G available) on all the time. Calls and SMS received perfectly.
Only issue I have is when using 3G, unlike home wired broadband, I cannot use multiple applications through the single 3G connection (e.g. Blackberry client on and surf too)

Vodafone HSDPA 3.5G problem in Athena...

Ok guys, i need some of you to do a bit of testing for me, here is my problem:
When my 3.5G (HSDPA) Data connection is active I cannot make or recieve phone calls.Any incoming call goes straight to voicemail and any number I dial the phone will display "call ended" before it even starts to to ring. The minute I close the data connection the phone works again.
I have done a lot of searching on net and in this forum, some other member are having the same problem. But i think it's only with vodafone, T-mobile don't seems to have this problem. What T-mobile do is to disconnect the data transfer ot reduce it to only 3G while calls comes in. BUt vodafone don't do that, it receive phones ok when in 3g mode but no ok in 3.5g at all. It doesn't switch itself.
So please if you have a vodafone and Athena, try go to Internet, and make sure it's 3.5G, while data is transferring, make a phone call to yourself and see whether it gone through. Please can t-mobile user test it and confirm it does work on your device as well. Thanks

I was reading about people who purchased a Nokia n95 and got a insert in their box advising that if they experiance problems with in/outbound calls to switch to 3G or GSM!
The only difference between tmob and vodafone is the hardware in the network. tmob is running Nokia HSDPA hardware/software and vodafone use erricson.
My advise it to use the bandswitch application which allows you to turn on HSDPA when needed keeping your device in gsm mode the rest of the time. It will also increase your battery life.

which application will you suggest? btw this is very very bad for me since i use emoze which is a push mail application, my connection to internet is always on, and it always runs at the highest speed (which is HSDPA). Therefore if i have this application open (must do if i want my mail to get push in), then i can't receive phone calls.......
Looks like T-mobile's one is much better in this case, wonder what they whill say when i phone up tomorrow. I think this is quite a serious problem, while you are tramsmitting data ( e.g. liveTV, liveRadio, push mail, downloading, browsing.......)the phone won't work!!!!
I will have a long discussion about this with Vodafone tomorrow and see whether they can cancel my contract......
So T-mobile one will switch itself from 3.5 G to 3G while call comes in?

If it does how do I activate it do I need a new sim card or do I call Vodafone which is my service provider to activate the feature.

your question is a bit out of the topic, anyway, of course Advantage support HSDPA, most of the sim card already 3G capable, if some reason you have the old type of sim card, then request a new one. You can tell when you connect your device which type of service you are getting. For vodafone you do not need to activate it, it's already been activate.

Basically what i want to do is let my device automatically change from 3.5G to 3G when calls comes in, this program doesn't allow you to do that. It can manually swtich between 3G and GPRS, but not from 3.5G to 3G and not automatically as well.
So here is the situation when you will face problem, if you are using vodafone, and your device is 3.5 capable. When you are browsing on the net, or listen to live radio, or watch live TV, or do PUSH mail, of course you want it to the highest speed and it require you to have continues data transmission, so while you are doing that, you won't be able to receive any phone call at all, it will all goes into your voice message. HENCE you will miss a lot of calls !
From how i see it, this issue is big. And big enough for me to have a long chat with Vodafone and possibility change to T-mobile.
So before i do that, i need to make sure three things, for vodafone user, do you have the same problem? and for t-mobile user, do you NOT have this problem. Is there any ways to fix this?
My contract cancellation fee is about £350 so i need to make sure T-mobile one works before i go ahead, thanks for the help guys.

I'm with T-Mob and whilst I can receive and make calls whilst surfing or downloading (so presumably Push e-mail aswell), it is not always as reliable as I would like it to be.
It does work and generally allows simultaneous voice and data transmission, but for some reason it sometimes (only on occasion) will 'pause' the internet/data transmission (specifically download) and break the data connection to allow voice calls but automatically resume the data connection straight after the call.
It's a bit confusing sometimes....but that could be due to not knowing whether I'm on HSDPA or 3G at the time?!?
In any event, it does support the two simultaneously and switching is definitely automatic.
I'd go the T-Mobile route if I were you, If the switch is not too costly for you.

well, switch is very costly......£350. Once thing you need to make sure is whether you are on HSDPA or 3G, because in 3G, you can have voice and data at the same time with no problem, but in HSDPA, you can't, but even that, the best solution (i think it's the T-mobile solution) is when calls comes in, drop the data speed to 3G to allow calls to comes in, once calls finish, bring up the speed to HSDPA, this case you don't miss any calls. Apparently, this isn't the Vodafone way, for Vodafone, if you are on HSDPA, the system simply don't do anything therefore you miss all your calls.....
Today i have been testing push mail, looks like Microsoft knows this issue too so whey they only boost up to HSDPA when checking mail with server, once it's finish, it's drop to 3G again. So direct push is ok.
But there are some other third party software (most of them!!) which doesn't do this, therefore you will just simply miss the call.
e.g. If you are browsing internet, while the internet is loading, you will just miss all your calls.
I kind of need someone with vodafone to confirm this behavior, but i am 80% sure i am correct, therefore i will call them up tomorrow and see what they say.
Wich part of Vodafone has got HSDPA??? I thought it's standart UMTS (384kbps)???

quite a lot of places got HSDPA already, most of the London at least, i did a speed test yesterday and i am getting 1.3Mbps (1300kbps). very fast indeed but useless if we keep missing calls......

I have tested on 3 Hong Kong using 3.5G, I was downloading a 6M file using ftp client and the transfer rate > 100kByte/s (so it must be using HSDPA) and the indicator shows "H" instead of "3G", I made a call from my other phone and it rings! So i guess it's the Vodafone problem instead of U1000.

yes i am guessing the same too.......thanks for your help, now we just need one more Vodafone UK user to confirm this.

ANyone using Advantage or similar model with the three HSDPA network?

i doubt Vodafone is the only one, basically is to do with their network hardware and protocol, if other company uses the same, you will be in the same situation with me. I have heard member here report that some operation in Asia and Europe acting the same, so once again, it's not just Vodafone (i think).
Same problem with Three in Sweden...
and I´m pretty sure that they are using Ericsson equipment here. Anyone else in Sweden with the same problem?

I have a Hermes through Vodafone and recently flashed with AKU 3.31 so can tell when I am connected via HSDPA. I am using FlexMail 2007 and I have been having the same problem that you describe. Some of my incoming calls go straight to voicemail, paricularly since with the IMAP IDLE function on FlexMail is frequently connecting. When I try to make calls I end up having to close FlexMail before making a call. By coincidence, I just contacted T-Mobile yesterday, and I found two other reasons for switching: 1) Web 'n Walk -- up to 1GB per month under their fair usage policy, the closest I have found to unlimited data in the UK and at a very reasonable price, and 2) Business One Plan which allows you to use your inclusive minutes for calls to North America and Europe for no extra charge. The only downside that I can see with switching to T-Mobile is that sms bundles are separate, while with Vodafone they are included in the data packages, and I will lose access to Vodafone Text Centre, which allows me to send sms messages from my computer within Outlook over the internet (and interestingly counts these as sms messages sent from the UK no matter what country I am in, so all messages I send using this are included in my bundle).
I can now confirm now at least all Vodafone UK customer will have this problem when they connect to HSDPA, i have cancell my contract with them, i pay my remaining contract fee which is £320 ! I wrote a 3 page long letter to them explaining this to them, the reason of my cancellation is because their network issue, not mine. I have phone them a lot of times as well, the answer i got is "don't use 3G then, just use GPRS!".
Anyway, i am now on T-mobile network, and the above problem is no longer here, i connect to HSDPA, if calls comes in, the network will drop itself to 3G for me to answer the phone, then up again to HSDPA once the call is finish, sweet!

How do i use HSDPA?
I get GPRS/3G as options in the connections box...
I only ever see 3G in the icon at the top.

X1i when using 3G on AT&T I cant make or receive calls???

So when I leave all the band settings to auto on the phone, it immediately connects to AT&T's 3G network and shows the "H" in the title bar it worked for a little while then calls stopped coming through, after a hard reset it works again with calls for a few hours, then it begins to fail.
If I switch the bands to GSM and manually select the frequencies (850 + 1900, according to wm) then it connects to the EDGE network, and I can make and receive calls as I please, no problems, except for the crappy network speed.
So someone help me out here please, is the phone defective, or is it not working as it should because of the lack of the 850 band? I know that AT&T works on either or but this problem has me stumped.
Other than this rather huge problem (phone that cant make calls), I absolutely love the Xperia and would hate to return and wait for another.
did you try to use the connection wizard to let the phone config itself?
after I put my iphone sim in it shows the H/3G icon on anf off all the time, while I can receive call I was unable to go online.... after someone suggested me to call att to update the imei on my account to the x1, I found that I still have to go to connection and change the setting myself b4 it can go online. you will have to remove the user name and pw in media net setting and uncheck the proxy server.
I guess my case is a little different than yours but I guess you can give it a try... good luck =)
Thanks, I actually haven't tried that since i figured it would be the same as what happens when you turn the phone on for the first time, when it autoconfigs.
if it say it detect a new sim and ask if you want to do the auto config then I guess its the same... but again I did need to change some settings inside the network config to make it work too... so I am guessing the "auto config" has some flaw in it
No problem with my X1i when I venture in a1900mhz area close to my home. I live in a small town in Ca. only 850mhz here. But in the larger Metro area around me... No Problems with calls or hspeed data access...

Thanks for the replies, It looks like the Configuration wizard in the settings menu did the trick. It do something else that the autoconfig doesnt. The phone seems to work now just fine, although it doesnt hang on to the signal as well as my old k790a. The office I work in is an ATT dead zone and I could make calls using the K790a with only one bar, with the Xperia it either doesnt go through or drops the call.
Again this is better as it works now, just not as well as my old phone.
Also, scl_electronics, so you are saying the X1i has both 850 and 1900mhz bands? I had a feeling mine did too, but I thought it was put to rest that that wasnt the case with the X1i....

i should have been more specific!! Where I live, 3G is only on 850mhz band so I don't get access..Just The edge network. When I venture about 10 mile away toward the major Metro areas..The 1900mhz band are used. So the H is displayed, but I don't have those access problems for calls or data!!
But i am waiting to see if they can crack the rom for 850mhz-3G access!!

Oh ok thats kind of makes, sense although I thought the X1i didnt have an 850 band at all, so what frequency does it work off then?
Anyways, back to my problem....I spoke too soon, it dont work on 3G switched to EDGE. I might just try getting a new sim card, mine is a Cingular one from 2005, that has been in at least 4 different phones now including the X1i.

Well out here in Ca... 850mhz gsm/edge is used ..So I quad band gsm phone is handy!!!

Yes it is! My little problem is a little confusing though as one thing I just realized that I didnt say before is that the phone has no problem connecting to the 3G network using HSDPA. I get full bars with the H icon pretty much everywhere in my area and my data speeds are very good. So I can surf the net, download programs, watch high quality youtube videos using the app in touchflo and even send and receive texts just fine.....just no calls when on 3G. I'm hoping its just setting somewhere and not a faulty device.
I live in Raleigh NC by the way so maybe it could be a faulty tower?
Well when venture into Stockton Ca. my phone switches to 3G-HSDPA:1900MHZ Without a connection hitch....
Have you tried a soft reset......
But when all else fails Hard Reset to the Rescue!!!
Btw... in several of my ppc-wm units when restoring to OEM setting(hard reset) there has been many time the process had a problem. So something would be screwed up!! So when You don't succeed, try another hard reset!!

hey i was wonder if your problem is HSDPA/HSUPA being on, i have at&t also and it worked for the first few weeks fine with it being on then all of a sudden it stopped and couldn't connect to the internet, before i had the H/Edge showing up and also my email never updated when it was set to do it every 15minutes. Now that i disable the HSDPA/HSUPA i see 3G/Edge and email update all the time on the X1i. Just wonder if that might fix it, I'm all kinda still new to all this but i had my X1i for 2 1/2 weeks now.
Hello thanks for all the suggestions, Experiaenjoy, no I haven't tried mainly because I can connect to the data network just fine and get awesome speeds with full bars pretty much everywhere, all of my data related activities and programs work just fine (aka murder my battery life ). I just cant make calls while on 3G.
I talked to a coworker today who used to be a regional manager at AT&T hee said that he saw many cases of people who were having problems where it was due to the SIM card. He said they all had the older orange Cingular card and that an update to the new blue AT&T card solved all problems. So right now I'm trying to see if I can get mine updated (I do have an older Cingular SIM). Once I get that, I will do a hard reset (3rd one also done about 20 soft resets since I 've had it-I've installed a bunch of programs and tweaks) and skip the auto config and go straight to the connection wizard.

Xperia X1 signal problems. Weird.

Hi, i'm from Canada, PQ, Montreal and another mate in this forum from Canada, Vancouver is having the same problem.
For the first 10-20secs after the X1i has been booted succesfully. We get the G status icon(GPRS signal) in the corner and get 2-3bars of signal, during these times, we can call/text or receive calls. After this, the G signal will be replaced by E signal (Edge), this is when i cannot make any calls nor receive any calls nor send any message. I tried this while i was in the streets in a open sky place. I tried my friend's phone and i had FULL SIGNAL (its an nokia 5800 xpress) , i tried my other phone, nokia n95 8gb, i get sky rocketing signal as well.
So the only way to call me, is to keep on trying , hoping i get GPRS status. I have tested my mom's sim card prepaid , to see if it relates to 3G internet or something , still no luck. Anyone from canada having problems?? I'm with rogers. They use 850mhz/1850mhz , i have disabled HSPDA and seletected these two bands, still no luck .... I cannot update the radio rom because its locked ....
Please help =(
perhaps we might have to unlock the phone with Fido to use voice calls on edge? i'm having the same problem. ;(
Perhaps you have to call fido to disable EDGE and use GPRS only ... i'm gonna have to refund my x1 =(
Initially, Fido worked basically with 1900MHz but since the acquisition of Fido by Rogers in 2004, Rogers integrated the networks extending coverage thru 850MHz...
Better get the X1a or change provider
I live in sweden and I also have problem with my signal. it just disapears from time to time.
Same problem here on the other side of the world; in Abu Dhabi. Sometime the signal is completely lost!

is it possible to disable Edge?? THe "E" symbol only indicate edge reception but we are not technically connected to it. Can i actually ask them to cut Edge reception totally?
I only have the voice plan in the first place.
