WIFI and GPRS not working - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

I'm really racking my brain on this one. I would greatly appreciate any ideas, as I've long run out of them.
---Intro---
I have a one week old Wizard (Cingular 8125 variant). It has one of the latest roms with AKU2 on it. Using Registry Wizard, I selected the option to add wireless G compatibility at some point in time. Wireless initially worked after setting my phone and router up per a tutorial on a popular Axim users forum. A day or two later I went to use WIFI and I get nothing. GPRS/EDGE initially worked also, but at the same time it stopped working. I've spent countless hours since trying everything I possibly can to get WIFI to work.
---The problem---
I am not able to connect to the wireless router. My Wizard sits on "connecting" forever then maybe 5 mins later it says unable to obtain an IP address. When I look at the status, it says 0.0.0.0 for the IP address the whole time it says connecting. Since the problem started, I have yet to actually connect using any settings. The first day I configured the wireless it worked perfectly, with WAP encryption and all.
---Some of what I have tried---
On my US Robotics wireless router I've turned mac filtering and all security settings off, making an open network. I removed the WAP setting for the connection on the Wizard as well. I've tried all the suggestions I can find on any WM 5 and 2003se related forums to no avail. I've tried all the various combinations of limiting to B/G only or mixed, using work/internet settings, and deleting WIFI connections and creating new ones. I don't have a proxy setting in any of my connections. The whole time my battery usage is set to the highest (performance) setting and I'm right next to the wireless router. I've tried turning off all proprietary speed enhancement options. I even installed a program (Pocket DHCP) recommended by Axim PPC users to figure out why I'm not receiving an IP. Since I'm not really a DHCP wiz, I can't tell from the results what is causing this.
I'd be greatful if anyone can help me with figuring this one out. Thanks in advance!

maybe a dumb question, but...the wireless part of the router is working fine? did u tryed with a laptop or pc?
did u tried a hard reset?

That's actually a great question. I did connect fine the first day I configured the wireless and made no changes from then until it stopped working, so I'm just assuming that the router is working properly. Unfortunately I don't have access to any other wireless device/laptop to test it with.
I'm getting ready to do a hard reset right now. I was really wanting to avoid this but I think I have no other option. Hopefully this will fix whatever setting was messed up. I have a slight hunch that the registry change for allowing G access was the cause of the problems.

maybe i missed this in the original post, but have you tried making your device use static ip's on the lan instead of dhcp?

Shogunmark:
I didn't try static IP's for two reasons. 1. Firstly I couldn't figure out how to set this up. 2. I don't want to have to fiddle with removing the static IP when I'm away from home trying to use a different wifi hotspot. I would like it to be seamless and just connect when I turn wifi on near any unsecured network (other than the usual pressing OK to connect).
STATUS UPDATE:
I did a hard reset and directly after this I tried to connect to my open network. Amazingly GPRS/EDGE now works, but WIFI still does not. Then I did a factory reset on my USR router then changed the settings back to how it was just set before. Now, I'm connecting. This doesn't make any sense since the settings are the same now but it's working, maybe theres a glitch with the router that this fixed. This small progress seams like a miracle.
Now that I can connect to WI-FI, I have a new problem. When I try to load pages in internet explorer, it says page not found or whatever the standard error message is. I'm so close I can smell it. There must be some setting that needs to be changed on my Wizard.

SUCCESS
I report that I am now absolutely delighted with network connection on my Wizard. After hard reseting the phone and the router, now I can connect to both WIFI and GPRS. Not only that... but also PIE will choose WIFI if I'm connected to a wireless router, otherwise it will default to GPRS/EDGE without any interaction from me. This stuff is really awesome when it works. It is difficult to setup correctly though.

somehow wifi routers r not 100% reliable, every now and then i need to reset my linksys or i cant get ip as in your case...but with a normal reset is enough in my case...

That's good to know. Maybe I didn't even need to hard reset my Wizard, just the router. Now I know to start with the router because it's much easier to reconfigure. This is the first time that I've implemented WIFI on my own network. What happens if a public WIFI spot won't give you an IP anymore? Surely you just can't go and reset it. Granted it's not nearly as old as Ethernet, WIFI has been out for long enough that you think they would have these major kinks worked out.

How did you manage this? I have been struggling for ages to set things up this way. Can you post your settings from settings>connections>connections>advanced>select networks. Also settings>connections>network cards.
I would like to be able to just turn on wlan from comm manager and use wifi to surf and connect to my wireless lan, but if no wifi available to default to my T-mobile gprs connection for surfing. Currently having to manually change the settings "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using" My Work Network or Tmobile gprs each time I want to use either.
What I want is the option
if wifi available
use wifi
else use gprs

Well my friends and I were like sitting around drinking foo-foo drinks and I just like stumbled upon the answer. Just kidding, it's fun to play the role of your avatar, especially mine.
Settings, Connections tab, Network Cards, Network Adapters tab: My network card connects to Internet
Settings, Connections tab, Connections, Advanced tab, Select Networks: Set first one to My work network. Set second one to MediaNet (or your gprs/edge/etc connection profile).
Now with those set, edit the My Work Network profile and make sure that under the proxy tab check connects to the internet option, uncheck the proxy option. Now edit your MediaNet (or other carrier data plan) and make sure that this contains all options for your carrier like proxy, modem, etc. If you are a Cingular user, go here to verify all settings for medianet. (Note that you will ignore the beginning couple steps when they say to place medianet first in the "select networks" settings. Start after step 6. Also they used the CingularGPRS connection profile instead of the MediaNet one) http://www.pocketpcaddict.com/forum...ular-8125-windows-mobile-5-phone-edition.html
When you connect to your WIFI router first and it asks you if it's work or internet, always select internet. If you are not sure what it's set at, go out of range or unplug your router. Go into network cards and find your router SID, click and hold on it and select remove. Then when you try to connect to your WIFI again it will prompt you for this, make sure you use internet setting.
Now if you have done everything correctly, Internet Explorer will use WIFI when it's turned on and you get a connection. All other times it will default to GPRS/EDGE. I can go from one to the other back and forth without changing any settings, only enabling and disabling WIFI in the comm manager.

I have read many many many posts about people having issues with the wizard and that exact router... I personally would stay away from linksys.. i work in a field that deal with 3rd party routers and such, anytime an end user has a linksys i can usually prove 90% of the time that its the culprit (80% of the time powercycling it does the trick)

This seemed to do the trick for me.
I am sure that I had tried all possible combinations previously but what the hell, it is working exactly how I want now.
Thank you

PC, WiFi, PPC, IP solution?

OK so after having problems connecting my XDA2s to my laptop via wifi to use it's ADSL connection, I began to realise it was a major issue for a lot of users.
Having covered almost all the threads here regarding PPC WiFi issues, I still am perplexed as to how the whole thing is successfully set up.
I concluded that it was virtually impossible; that the PC would not provide the PPC with an IP address so I would have to use some sort of application to manage the connection. However, yesterday for some reason only the omnipotent holy deities of the grandiose gods of WiFi would know, I had it working perfectly. For about 10 minutes, until I decided to disconnect to see if I could readily re-connect. My hopes were of course, dashed, and I have not had it working again since.
I have tried every combination of settings on both the laptop and the XDA to no avail, and have followed more threads and links than I can count on my fingers and toes. I've tried all the same settings I had when it was working (briefly) but still have no real success.
So basically, what's the deal with getting this damn thing working? Maybe what I need is a step by step idiot's guide on how to initially set up the wireless network on the laptop first, to make sure it has all the right settings? I'm using a Vaio running XP home (built in WiFi).
Has anyone completely resolved this problem yet? I would really like a solid, clean method of setting up the connection rather than stumbling through a million different combinations of settings and ending up with something hashed and unstable.
Many thanks for any help on this, I'm sure it's a tiresome subject for many.
......And as is always the case, as soon as you post about it you figure it out!
If anyone is still having trouble using their XDA2 to connect to a PC's ADSL via WiFi, ive got it figured!
RE: ive got it figured!
PLEASE HOW? I HAVE ALSO THE SAME PROBLEM HERE
THANKS
Me too. I have a XDA mini S.
I don't know what settings to put into the thing. I had it connected for a short while but when I went into internet explorer it started connecting to GPRS instead of WIFI to internet.
Clearly I haven't got a clue. The book is of no help either.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Think i'm connected to the internet. It doesm't seem to want a password although one is listed listed in the router. Just can't stop it going over GPRS instead of the wifi for intenet????
problem solved
Hi All
Ok heres what I did .
Connections
under my work network
set ,set up my proxy server to "this network connects to the Internet.
Then go to advanced
Under select networrks ,Network management,Set both to "my work network"
Network Card
Network adapters
"My network card connects to work
Then select the network card ie sandisk
tick Use specific ip address
type in 1 thats on your network ,It will connect but you wont be able to browse still
Then soft reboot
change from use ip adress to "server assigned ip address"
soft reboot
and bingo

(8525) Wifi and GPRS/UMTS Connection...

I don't know what is going on but when I'm at home, I woud usually be connected to UMTS/GPRS. Of course, having wifi at home, I would rather use that (speedwise) but when I turn on wifi, I notice that I would be connected to both WIFI and UMTS/GPRS.
FIRST QUESTION:
Which am I utilizing? UMTS/GPRS or WIFI?
Now, considering that I "THINK" I'm using wifi, I would launch PIE and to go to a website, it takes forever...... The task bar keeps saying locating. I have to literally wait and wait before I get to the website.
SECOND QUESTION:
What is going on here?
At any rate, if I turn WIFI off and I'm just connected to GPRS/UMTS, I can browse using PIE without any problems. No "locating..." etc. or waiting.
Please help!

While on wifi you can temporarily turn off GPRS using connections hard key below on/off hard key. Just tap on the icon that looks like a pda with two arrows. When off wifi reconnect GPRS using connections in settings menu.
Mike.
Ok. goodie. I was able to shut off the GPRS.
Now I launched internet explorer. The only connection that I'm connected to is my wifi. Still the taskbar is saying "Locating.." taking forever to go anywhere.

At least one step in right direction. I'm not so hot on the slow connection. Assume ports and proxies are setup ok.
Perhaps others have some ideas.

In Start>Settings>connections there is an option "edit my proxy server" and within this lots of options.
I will have a different provider from you so don't know what settings should be there. I am also not an expert on this so hopefully someone who is will jump in with some info on this.
One person I was posting with queried why their wifi connection needed any proxy settings as they were not connecting through to their mobile operator but to their home broadband connection. However when they tweaked a setting here their Wifi suddenly started working. See Mariete's last post here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=284867
We need someone with more knowledge!! Anyone?
Mike
Well for one thing, there is no setting for proxy server. Even then when i did find anything to do with proxy server, it is not even activated.
Next..
Phew...Someone else with the same EXACT issue. I was on with Cingular/HTC support today and they really didn't help. I will keep trying new things and checking back to this thread to see if anyone else thinks of an idea.
I have a Apple Airport (802.11g) with no security settings. I have a few laptops on the network and friends who can connect their laptops without any issues.
I actually got tired of this issue. I downloaded and bought netfront. It was something I was going to buy anyway. So after installing it, I tried it again and this time, it goes to the website flawlessly. It must be something to do with IE.
On the other hand, I'm having some issues with shutting down the GPRS again. It keeps turning on automatically.

everyone make sure they arent on their providers connection that utilizes the proxy.. i dont know about any provider except cingular.. when using wifi stay off MEDIA NET.. everyone's best bet is to make sure they are on the connection for MY ISP, go to settings, connections, connections, advanced, select networks, change the drop down to MY ISP. also make sure wifi is off before doing this, after changing to my isp then turn wifi back on and you should be ok...

Absolutely fantastic!!!
Hi All,
First of all, let me tell you that I was also suffering from the same problem of MediaNet proxy settings. I've done the same changes asked by "shogunmark" which really sounds good logicaly. And my wifi connection started working miraculously! Yes, it is miracle for me as I am trying to connect to WiFi for last 3 days! Thanks a lot again...
I got it to work as well. However, I couldn't use "My ISP" connection as it was pointing to a Cingular domain. I ended up creating a new one called Home and it works fine. I do have a question. Under Settings/Connections/Connections/Advanced/Select Networks...
What does everyone have selected in both drop downs? I had to select my new Home connection for both to get WIFI to work.
that cingular domain/AP is only used for edge/3G data with no proxy.. this is why this is used for wifi.. theoretically MEdia net would work if it didnt have the proxy... but the phone doesnt look at the AP name when on wifi, only the proxy, you shouldnt have needed to create a new connection!

ok, so I should be able to keep Media Net on the top drop down and My ISP on the second drop down? I assume I should just be able to use the Comm Manager to switch between WIFI and the Cingular Data Connections?

Wi-Fi Doesn't Connect

Okay, I've searched, sifted through a boatload of possible threads relating to mine and still haven't found a resolution to my problem.
My Wi-Fi doesn't connect to my wi-fi router at home. My laptop connects perfectly fine without any hiccups. I've gotten the wi-fi to connect to our local Apple Store's wi-fi network to access the internet.
I double checked the password like a hundred times, disabled to proxy, and made sure the network is connecting to the internet and not on the my work settings.
I'm still using WM5 and not sure if it's an issue with the OS or not.
Please someone lend a helping hand. I've spent many hours researching this problem and still nothing.
Note: I did get it to connect only once when I first got last week and it didn't work again after I left the house. I've master reseted the damn thing over 5 times just to make sure.
1.Erase the settings for your home network out of your phone 2. Remove the security from your router and try connecting again
If that does not work hard reset the router again and try to connectthrough its default settings (make sure their are no saved wifi networks in your phone)

I've tried your method. The first didn't work.
The second method worked. I had to hard reset my router and try again and it finally worked even with my password. I also master reset my phone prior to hard resetting my router.
Thanks for the info. Would you happen to know why it might have done that?
It might have bveen the security settings on the router or your router was just blocking it all together...
This sucks. It eventually keeps doing the same thing again and again. When I leave my house and try to reconnect later when I get home, WHAM! No connections. It can find my router and says it's available but when it tries to connect, it can't. I don't know what the hell is wrong.
I've master resetted both my phone and router and started all over from scratch.
On my Linksys router i use no security protocols. i use MAC address filtering instead. If the router does not have your mac address you can not connect. Drives the neighborhood war-drivers crazy!! It says unsecured, but they can not connect no matter what they try!
me neither

That's the first thing i did buddy.
I am not really sure what it could be then, when I intaslled the official cingular wm6 Rom it was doing the same thing then I did a hard reset and when it was installing the extended Rom I did a soft reset and that fixed it, but then again I hyad to manually put all the settings in.
You might want to check if your really connected... If I start mine out about 1 inch from the router and get connected, I can walk all over the house and it will show connected (even updates the signal strength). However...IE will just keep saying 'locating' like yours. This is because it cannot reach the wifi base with it's buggered up transmitter. I don't think there is a cure for this.... Ikeep looking though...

How do you do that and find the mac address on the 8525? I'm using Black Majik's cooked rom so it may be different from the original WM5.
Also an update on hooking to my router. I disconnected my router and cable modem and left it off for about 3 minutes. I then plugged it back in and let both reset. I connected afterwards and it works fine. Don't know what will happen later on when I leave and it disconnects.

The battle for wifi

Hi guys. If you don't remember me - here's my story in a nutshell. I got a 8525 about a week ago. Since day one I tried and tried and tried but never managed to get the wifi working... (as you can imagine I am beyond desperate at this point)
Anyway last night I got thinking and decided to give it another stab. I hard reset, messed with the settings again...and this time manage to get a little further. My phone is now showing me as "connect to network", only problem is I get a message saying "Cannot connect with current connection settings. To change connection settings, tap Settings." each time I try to access anything internet related. I know I'm close especially since I'm actually connected now, I think it's just AT&T's rom doing everything it can to get me to use their networks (I'm on T-Mobile and don't have a dataplan anyway...).
Anyway can you guys think of what the problem might be? I'm so close I can taste it! Thanks.....
Bump... Anyone home?
where did you get your 8525? my wifi on my 8525 works perfectly fine, have u tried upgrading to WM6?
I have WM6 already. I got it off ebay. Everything is perfectly fine with it, it just doesn't want to use the wifi connection to get online.
Try a hard rest.
my 1st 8525 i got off ebay, and it worked great up until a few weeks ago, when the screen stopped functioning it just turned white, i called AT&T and they sent me a new 1 i just got it this morning and now, i cant make calls >.> it will ring then my phone will say i have no service when i have full service and the call will end. but my wifi is fine... did u use the WM6 upgrade that was released by AT&T
No thanks re: the hard reset. I've already done that... If I can't figure this out I'm going to sell my phone and steer clear of ppc phones. I like it, but I bought it for wifi and this is just getting ridiculous. I have tried everything. I've spent hours and hours on this. I've reset my router god knows how many times, played with security settings, reset my phone over and over to start over.....
The worst part now is that I know it's connected. The wifi aspect is fine. It's just the stupid phone not wanting to use the wifi connection for the internet.
Maybe someone with a 8525 and a Linksys router can post ALL of their wireless related settings for me.
Ekh
Yes I used the AT&T update.....
i use wifi and my linksys router, the 8525's range isnt that great u need to be within a few feet of the router to get good reception, im about 30 feet from mine and i get 2 Wifi signal bars and an ok speed. but try this
Start > Programs > Proxy Manager > Disable Proxy
then try to use your wifi, then go back and restore the proxy when your done, i think some 1 told me to do that because att uses that so u can use their internet service or sumthin
Thanks but I'm way ahead of you. I've already tried every piece of advice I've come across on xda. My last hope is someone elses detailed settings.
is your network passworded by a WEP or TKIP ?
It's WPA... My device has the password, and I added the MAC to my router table. It's connecting to the router/wifi...

Your problem may be one of the following:
1. The wifi connection is specified as connecting to "work" and programs are set to use an internet connection.
2. The wifi connection is specified as connecting to "internet" and programs are set to use a work connection.
Nope that's not it. But it does remind me of something so thanks. I deleted all the connections seeing as I don't have a dataplan... I made a new connection called "Wifi". BUT, it's not like I can specify any connection for it so it's just blank (no connection specified). By this I mean the options for a connection are:
bluetooth, cellular line, cellular line (GPRS, 3G), Generic IrDA, Hanes...COM1. No option for wireless...
Does that help?
Check that your router is set to allow connections by devices with 802.11b, which the Hermes uses. Most default to 802.11g only.
It's set for b and g
Helloooo...?
Hallelujah!!!!!
People, I have WIFI!!!
Thanks to everyone who tried to give a helping hand... It's really appreciated.
For future reference to those who are suffering from the same problem - this is what seemed to fix it... I entered google into IE via it's IP address rather than it's name (open command prompt, ping google.com...). To my surprise the page quickly loaded. I then instantly realized that the problem was with the DNS settings. I opened up "Wi-Fi" in settings, went to the "Network Adapters" tab at the bottom and entered in the DNS addresses for "IEEE 802.11b/g...". If you need help with this just PM me (I consider myself somewhat of an expert on this topic now).
I thought I was never going to get online. There IS a god!

Can't connect to WiFi using Touch HD

Hi everyone.
First off, I know there are a million and one other threads.. believe me.. I have searched!
Basically my phone won't connect to my network. It was working fine earlier today. I've tried changing all the security settings in my router (turning off encryption for example). I've tried soft resetting and hard resetting the phone.
Nothing seems to be working. It finds the network fine, but it just says 'Connecting' then goes to 'Available' but it won't use the wifi connection.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Have you tried connecting your device using a friends wifi router to see if this connect you
Nope. I forgot to add that I will try connecting to work's WiFi tomorrow!
Anything to try in the mean time?
Try these:
1) disable frame bursting
2) disable big packets and other methods of wifi speeding
3) force 11b
4) use WPA-PSK TKIP only
5) check if you have MAC or other access filtering
than let us know

1) Can't see any settings under my router.
2) Tried disabling gnitro (Belkin router), no difference.
3) No difference
4) Already on that.
5) Turned off.
It's so odd. Works fine with an N95.
I don't think it's anything to do with my router because like I said it worked fine earlier on in the day then suddenly stopped. The router settings hadn't changed.
Edit: I've tried turning the router security off altogether also. I really don't feel it's an issue with my router.
Tested the phone at work. It works fine.. so I don't have a clue why it's not working at home? Surely the router can't be incompatible with the phone.. especially considering it worked at one point.
Very weird! I got fed up with my router so decided to restore the factory defaults and start from scratch.. worked straight away! So I restored the settings back to exactly how they were before (using a backup file I made).. and it worked!
Just posting incase it happens to anyone else anyway.

Maybe uve tried this already but could be the fact that your home internet access point is listed as Work rather than internet, used to have an issue with mine cause of that.
I also have this problem.
Reset did not help.
Listed as internet or work did not help in both cases.
Real weird!!
I've got the same problem, all of a sudden my hd won't connect to my router.
I can connect to open networks (wi-fi hotspots etc) so i know the wifi in the phone is working ok and my partners diamond can connect ok to my router, so the router is obviously ok.
Have reset the router as well and haven't changed any settings on the phone.
Don't understand!!!!
as other users point out within other threads, it seems that Blackstone has a problem connecting to wifi networks when WPA Authentification is enabled
try to disable it. it worked for me and soem other guys
good luck!
I could connect to my router fine using my laptop.. but I still had to reset my router to the factory settings before it worked again on my Touch HD.. then I could enable WPA and everything back again. So try that!
i thought i had a similiar problem, mine wouldnt connect to wifi, kept switching itself off. figured this is normal when its connected to usb. unplug usb and it turns back on!
I own an HTC Touch HD since January and have a similar problem, only it surfaced last week. Before I had only used the WiFi connectivity briefly. The problems started after I installed an AP on my house expressively for the new PDA. The node is fully open and set to B/G/N protocols.
After a couple days of medium (couple hours per day) use the WiFi connection suddenly quit, the device would try to connect (the top bar showing the WiFi connection animation continuously) and after a few moments gave up with a dialog box stating the current network settings were wrong (even thou they worked fine a few hours earlier).
I tried several hot and cold resets, but only solved the problem after flashing a new ROM; even then the same symptoms reappeared after a couple of days of regular use. Again no re-setting would cure the problem, and now not even flashing the ROM again would work. Nonetheless, some hours latter the WiFi would connect perfectly with the same nodes it refused to before, and in very short time.
I have witnessed this cycle twice and have yet not been able to find a trigger for it, but will keep my eyes open for any tell tale signs, and post any findings here.
Hi
I used to have problem using any secure wireless connection. Then I realized that you need a personal certificate to use secure wireless networks. It uses certificate to encrypt connection between access point. I have access to a windows certificate server so I created a personal certificate with private key and import it to my mobile. Now I can login to any secure wireless network.

That solution doesn't seem to work for this problem.
Resetting the router does seem to work.
I don't get why resetting the router works.... other devices can still connect no problems before resetting, so it only seems to be aproblem with the hd.
It also sux when you are using a public router with this problem that you can't reset.
Connecting to Belkin router
Guys, I had the same problem as well. HTC touch HD used to connect to the router fine but after installing an update/upgrade it would pick the signal from the router but would not connect. (I was using WEP authentication at this time)
SOLUTION:
Go to belkin router configuration on the web.
Under security change the Securtiy Mode to WPA/WPA2-Personal(PSK)
Change authentication to WPA-PSK
Select Encryption to TKIP and enter your password.
GO to your HTC touch HD's WiFi setting and turn Wifi ON. Select your home network SSID and edit it using the information you used on the router i.e. WPA-PSK ; TKIP, enter your key/password and click next, next and finish.
Worked for me....hope it helps.
WIFI not connecting
That truly is extremly nasty.
I have the same issue - wifi found, correct password (WEP, WPA all settings) but no successful connection.
Took an old HTC 3xxx - runs immediately.
I can not reset the router - there are too many users, they will kill me then.
So I installed an Access point (Sparklan WX 7800A) to play with.
Notebooks (HP, MSI and ASUS) have successful internet access, also the old HTC 3xxx.
But still the HTC HD does not connect.
Tried "WIFI Monster" - shows the wifi, but does not connect.
(But it deletes all wifi entries easily - so you can set them up new)
Tried with NO security/password: same issue.
WEP, WPA (all kinds): no connection
There must be something to be changed in the registry - but I have no idea what & where.
Or is the wifi that useless ?????
Maybe someone can help
Ciao
Mike
I had the same problem. But the problem stopped when i connect my htc HD to my laptop and used activesync to connect to internet. After i disconnected it, open wifi and... works ok!!
