Customising what ActiveSync syncs - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I'm using ActiveSync 4.1 and was wondering whether it is possible to select what to sync in Outlook? The reason for this is I have numerous calenders, contact folders and notes, which I normally separate into personal and business.

use groups ?

Is this groups within Outlook or ActiveSync? I can't find any option for this.
The sync'ing software I've used in the past for SonyEricsson's and Nokia's allowed me to choose which "folders" to sync. I'm a bit surprised ActiveSync doesn't have anything similar.

Once you've performed your initial connection with your device in AS, you can configure your sync preferences in the options for your connection once you've established the relationship between device & host (your computer) by going to Tools -> Options in the ActiveSync application window. You can select a category of data (Calendar, E-Mail, etc) and provided the option has more configurable settings, hit Options to fire up that dialog box.
The quickest way (at least the quickest I can see, as it requires no initial connection before configuration) is to go onto your device, go into ActiveSync, go Menu -> Options and select which items you'd like to sync with your device there.

I can see the option on both my phone and ActiveSync to sync which Outlook component but I'd like to be able to choose exactly which subfolder to sync. For example I have 3 contacts folders and 2 calender folders in my Outlook profile but I only want to be able to choose which folders to sync. Not sure if I have explained this clearly...

I think ActiveSync will only sync the main folder in Outlook. So if you have 2 calender folders it will only sync the main one. You can choose what date range (past week, past 2 weeks etc..) and which sub folders in mail.
Gav.

Just tried creating a second calender folder and put some meetins in. ActiveSync did NOT sync these to my PDA.
Possibly one of the programs here might do what you need: http://pocketpccentral.net/software/sync.htm
Gav.

Thanks for the advice Gav, I'll have a look at pocketpccentral.

Help! I broke it, but need the calendar data

I dropped my HTC wizard and it broke. How can I access the calendar that I have activesynced on my PC? It powers on so I could probably connect it to my PC via activesync but I have no idea how I could get the calendar app running on my PC.
I used to own a Sonyericsson p800 once and it had a great utility which let you manage calendar and phonebook items via pc, is there one for windows mobile?
So basically all I want is to view the calendar items via my pc because I have every appointment and important reminder in my phone's calendar

ActiveSync to Outlook
ActiveSync will sync calendar entries, notes and tasks to Outlook.
I had a similar problem with my JAMin. I bricked it while trying to flash with a customized ROM. I installed the WM5 emulator from Microsoft and managed to restore my last backup (SPB Backup) on the emulator and then sync this to Outlook.
(The local phone dealer is unbricking the phone under warranty!)
Where can I find the backups on my PC? I looked in Program Files/Activesync/ but couldn't see anything resembling a database file... Note that I'm not very technical with these things...
EDIT: I have the WM5 emulator and Outlook installed so I just need to find where the activesync backups are located.
UPDATE: Just got activesync working, so although the phone screen is busted, I can activesync it.
So please, anyone, let me know how I can get the phonebook and calendar info into my pc. I can view all the files on the phone via activesync -> Explore.
have you made any prior backups in your pocketpc?
whether you did or did not, here's an alternative method...
with activesync open, choose tools>options, then place a tick mark on contacts and calendars. press ok.
when you click on "sync", the contacts and calendar items will be placed in microsoft outlook. when you open outlook, you can view them, along with inbox, etc.
Ok, tried that and it synced them all... so they should be in my pc now, but where? Which directory??
start > programs > microsoft outlook
Can't see anything, I have Outlook 2002, maybe it does not support WM5? I did get an error when syncing:
"Cannot synchronize with the Outlook profile you are using, because a different profile was previously set up or the profile is password-protected. Please open Outlook using the appropriate profile.
Support code:8503001f"
I have never used Outlook on my PC before...
EDIT: Just to clarify: Outlook opens fine, but all the calendar entries and notes etc. are blank.
-John
i also have outlook 2002... i'm sorry, i cannot help you past this point (i understand zilch about "profiles"). i'm sure there are others who know what to do next.
There has to be a simple way to just yank out the calendar data from my phone just by using Explorer on my desktop pc, right? Please say it's so because now I uninstalled Outlook and I'm getting more errors than before, now I really don't even know where to start.
This is really driving me nuts... I know I have at least four job appointments for tomorrow, and it's now 11pm and I can't get them out of my phone, and I can't sleep because I know that I'm going to be really royally screwed tomorrow if I have to go to work and don't know where I'm supposed to go during the day.
I think I'll revert back to using a pen and paper calendar in the future...
I have to bump this up... I really need help in getting the calendar entries out of my phone.
If this was the first time you synchronised calendar data then ActiveSync should've taken you through the configuration of a new Outlook profile. If not, then you may already have a profile configured. Outlook's mail profiles can be managed from the Mail icon in the Control Panel on your PC.
I can't give you the details, but this is what I can vaguely recall.
There are a few files in the root directory of your phone that can be copied via activesynced-explorer (e.g. the mobile device on your My Computer). The file is something like PIM.xxx. If you have a spare phone to use, you may want to try copying these files into the other phone and see if the calendar stuff is in there or not.
Else, try to do activesync on another computer and transfer all calendar stuff into Outlook. when you have your new phone, just plug the phone in and have everything synced into the new phone.

Newbie - Activesync omitting contacts

using activesyn 4.2 i still cannot get my outlook contacts to sync with my 838pro. some files sync, some do not; email YES; contacts, favorites NO.
what's my next move?
could i have problem with the computer, a tablet pc running outlook 2003?
very frustrated
thanks
using activesyn 4.2 i still cannot get my outlook contacts to sync with my 838pro.
CONTACTS NAMES HAVE TO BE COMPLETED CORRECTLY. COPY ALL OF YOUR CONTACTS, TO A SUB FOLDER OR ALTERNATIVE FOLDER. DELETE FROM YOUR OUTLOOK ENTIRELY ALLOW THE SYNC TO DELETE FROM YOUR PPC.
THEN COPY, ONE BY ONE BACK, ALLOW EACH TO SYNC, AND CHECK. THEN YOU WILL FIND THOSE THAT SYNC, THOSE THAT DONT, AND START TO IDENTIFY THE ERRORS.
ONCE CONTACTS HAVE SYNC'D, YOU CAN THEN CHOOSE WHICH YOU DONT WANT SYNC'D BY CATEGORIES, PERHAPS YOU HAVE INADVERTANTELY DESELECTED SOME CATEGORIES.
some files sync, some do not;
FILES, IE USING YOUR DESKTOP SHORT CUT, OR DO YOU MEAN DATABASE ENTRIES?
email YES; contacts, favorites NO.
SOME FAVOURITES ARE JUST A PAIN. RELOCATE ALL THE ITEMS ON YOUR DEVICE TO AN ALTERNATIVE LOCATION \WINDOWS\FAVORITES.
DE SELECT THE SYNC FAVORITES. ONCE YOUR PPC FOLDER IS EMPTY, ALSO WIND BACK, OR REDUCE THE AMOUNT YOUR SYNCING FROM YOUR PC.
THEN SELECTIVELY, WHILST CONNECTED COPY 1 BY 1 ACROSS. I FOUND THAT SOME LINKS, OR SOME SYNC'S JUST DIDNT WORK. WHICH STOPPED ALL FROM SYNC'ING.
IT IS GENERALLY RECOMMENDED THAT FAVORITES ARE CONTROLLED BY ONE DEVICE OR THE OTHER, NOT USING COMBINATIONS.... THIS WAS AN OLD 2003 ISSUE, NO SURE IF RESOLVED.
what's my next move?
SYSTEMATIC AND METHODICAL TESTING... IF ALL ELSE FAILS,
1. REMOVE THE PARTNERSHIP, AND RE-PAIR
2. HARD RESET THE DEVICE....
could i have problem with the computer, a tablet pc running outlook 2003?
HIGHLY UNLIKELY TO RELATE TO THE TABLET PC STYLE.
Sorry for the shouting... I was just trying to delineate my comments from yours.
Thanks - I am going to start my trial and error now; will report back after 875 contacts are organized properly! Cheers...
i cant check the checkbox for contacts in syncing using activesync 4.2
what are the possible reasons?
Contacts do not sync - with activsync
Hi
I also have the same problem. I have a t-mobile MDA vario II and normal windows xp computer. I had no problems synching contacts with my orange spv c500 - easy as pie. Now with my vario ii it just refuses I have tried:
1. deleting the partnership a few times
2. hard resetting the device
Neither work.
In fact after the first time the partnership is set up, I found that the tick box to select to synch the contacts was greyed out. This is really frustrating. I take the point above that some contacts work and others might not, but why should this work perfectly well with the SPV and not the MDA?
Many thanks for any suggestions
Having just got an O2 XDA Orbit I had exactly the same problem with my Outlook Contacts not being synched.
I discovered that if I edited the contacts in Outlook in anyway (eg. adding and deleting a space) then the contact was then synched to my phone.
I have never had any problems on my XDAII, Jasjar, nor Jasjam... So not sure where your problems are coming from.
I have multiple sync systems working left right and centre and all appear to be working as I would expect. All I can think of is that you are using incorrect activesync, or incorrect outlook versions, or as above, just edit a couple. Alternatively, follow my previous post, ie create a sub folder, move all of your contacts to the subfolder. Delete all the ones on your device that didnt sync inthe move, copy one across, did it sync, yes ok, move on, if not, investigate, and so on and so forth.
Figured it out
For some reason it was not clear at the and now I don't know what changed, but it works so who cares.
All I did was go into activesync,
Tools > Options and check the contacts box.
For some reason before this was greyed out. At least I can now use this expensive device. Yay!!

WM Outlook Mail Disappearing

Outlook Mail downloaded to my Pro only stays in my Inbox for a day or two before "disappearing" from the device. The mail remains in webmail on the server, but how can I keep the mail on my Pro? I see a menu option to "move" mail, but I don't see an option to create a new folder on the Pro. When I create a new folder on the desktop, the folder does not get created on the Pro after I sync.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
Try changing the "options" for email in activesync - you are probably only asking it to synchronise the last few days of mail.

Disappearing when Not Syncing
Sorry that I wasn't clear. The mail is "disappearing" from my Inbox on the device when I retrieve mail wirelessly, not at the time of syncing. My sync setting appear broad enough not to impact the mail in my Inbox on my device.
Also, has anyone successfully added other folders to the Outlook tree on their device? I don't see any functions on the device to perform that. And, folders created on the desktop do not sync to the device.
even if you sync wirelessly your phone uses the activesync settings to dictate how it deals with your exchange server - have a go at changing the settings and see if I'm right
You can add folders by going to Menu...Tools...Manage folders. Hold down the stylus on the folder that you want to create a child to and a menu will pop up.
hope this helps
John
Solution for Folders
Thanks for solving my folders problem. The solution was so obvious, but I keep forgetting about the popup menu when pressing the screen (a wonderful and useful WM feature). I'm still struggling with the mail disappearing the Inbox.

Sync more folders in Exchange/Outlook mail ?

Hi,
The HD2 is my first HTC-phone, i like it so far, but i'm searching for a way to sync more folders than just my inbox using Exchange/Outlook-mail.
On my old phone (WM 6.1) i could go to folder-options (or something like that, i'm using the dutch version) and was able to select and deselect more folders.
I cannot find it on this phone, is this a WM 6.5 or a HTC-sense issue ?
(or maybe my own )
Regards,
Martin.
Just got mine on O2 - cant find the option either!
Did you have any joy??
go into your outlook inbox..select tools, then manage folders, then you can check all the folders you want sync'd
I've selected the folders I wanted to Sync on both my GMAIL and Google Apps account but it only downloads messages from Inbox. How do you get it to sync your sent mail and other folders?
Has anyone got extra folders syncd?
I am syncing a lot of folders in Outlook with our Exchange Server. As twisted-pixel wrote then you need to open Outlook E-mail and select Menu, then select Functions and then Manage Folders. The options Functions cannot be seen on the screen and you need to scrool down to it (It took me some time to find it )
In the Manage Folders screen you are able to select the folders you want to synchronize.

Email: Synch 'Sent' Folder Only?

Is there a way to synch ONLY the 'sent items' folder via ActiveSync or do you have to also keep copies of the various messages from Outlook also on your phone?
Bump. Anyone?
connect phone to pc, on pc open windows mobile device center, click mobile device settings - change content sync settings - email sync settings - untick the folders you dont want and tick those you do (sent items in this case)
Sorry, I think I didn't express that well. I want to synchronize only the sent items from my phone to Outlook on the desktop so that I can preserve any replies I send from the road while having the original message downloaded to my desktop when I return home. The settings you describe will only synch MS Outlook items with the 'Outlook' folder on my PC, and the accounts I set up on my phone do not appear in the folder tree to be selected. So that configuration won't work for me.
It seems that no combination of what I want is possible with the current software, yet I can't believe I'm the only one with this need.
Let me explain.
I use Outlook on my desktop and only use the phone for reading and replying to messages on-the-fly. Knowing that I will have a copy of the POP message on my laptop (which serves as my home pc also) when I get back at night, I only want to file and keep a copy of any replies I make from the road. My hope was to have any sent items uploaded to my laptop, I can run rules on MS Outlook to autofile to their respective folder structures, and I'm done - both received POP messages and their corresponding replies are preserved.
I own a copy of FlexMail, but it won't synch with Outlook, so that's not a solution. And there doesn't seem to be anything else out there that'll do what I need.
Any thoughts?
Bump. Anyone?
Guys, just to reiterate the question...
How would you get (move/copy/backup) messages from the local email accounts you set up on your HD2, to your Outlook PST on the desktop?
